* Fruit math: A tomato or an apple plus green bananas in a paper bag equals ripe bananas.

* Empty tissue boxes have so many uses. Try lining one with a plastic grocery bag and keeping it in your car for stray trash. Or you can use it to corral all of those plastic grocery bags until you need them -- just stuff them in one at a time. Lastly, and probably my favorite: Cut out doors and windows to use as houses for kids’ toys. Imagination makes the possibilities endless. -- JoAnn

MAKE CUT FLOWERS LAST LONGER Trim stems before immersing in water The natural emollients and sap in the stems of flowers may cause a film to form over the bottom of the stem after it is initially cut. This can reduce the flower’s uptake of water. To alleviate this, cut the stems once the flowers are home. A 45-degree angle allows for the absorption of the most water. You can recut them at each water change as well.

TECH TO TAKE ALONG ON YOUR NEXT ROAD TRIP Chargers: Many people feel their devices are extensions of themselves, but such devices won’t be of much help if they are routinely running out of power. Bring along several chargers that can be plugged into your car so you and your passengers can keep your smartphones and other devices running throughout the trip. Though the idea of going off the grid might seem enticing, leaving the world behind is less romantic when you need roadside assistance or are in search of a restroom or a place to pull over and grab a meal. If you want to disconnect from the world, you can always switch your phone to airplane mode. But keeping the phone charged can help in case of emergency.

Congratulations to our
Winner, Joanne Mistler The year is new, the Past is gone, the best is yet to come. Out with the old, out with the bad now a lesson to learn from... You can't change the past, you can't stop the rain, you can't bring back the words... So let us all learn from the makings of God... the flowers, the creeks and the birds.... When the sun shines above, the flowers will grow, and the birds will all sing, and the creeks will all flow... So my dear friends, let us all learn from this... enjoy all the things with such wonderful bliss.... Tomorrow's not given, Today is part gone, The darkness will follow.... But so will the dawn.....

TIPS TO HELP REALIZE YOUR GOALS THIS YEAR Make note of potential obstacles. Recognizing potential hurdles in advance of their appearance can help you overcome these obstacles and stay the course toward achieving your goals. For example, men and women hoping to lose weight can look ahead to occasions that might compromise their efforts, such as a loved one’s wedding or backyard barbecue. Recognizing these obstacles in advance gives people a chance to develop a plan to overcome them. In the weight loss example, men and women can choose vegetarian options from reception menus or resolve to avoid alcohol, which tends to be high in calories.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Another COVID Scam You know it’s getting bad when local police chiefs go on the nightly news to warn against scams. That’s what is happening in my area, and possibly in yours. Scammers are going all out to steal your information, money and identity, and they’re using the COVID vaccine as their tool. A few weeks ago, the scammers’ tactic was to claim we were eligible for a special COVID Medicare card. The card doesn’t exist. So many of us might have said that in response to the frequent phone calls that the scammers changed tactics. Now they claim to have an appointment for you to get the COVID vaccine. Here’s how it works: A scammer will claim to be calling from your doctor’s office, without actually naming the doctor. All they need from you, they say, is your Medicare card number and possibly your bank account or Social Security number “for identification.” Your best bet is to just hang up. But if you ask for the name of the doctor, they won’t know it. It’s the same with hospitals and clinics. If you’re not sure whether the call is fake, hang up and call your doctor, the hospital or clinic, and ask if they’ve tried to contact you. Scammers also are using different tactics: telling you they can fit you into a quick appointment, saying they’re from Medicare or your insurance provider, sending you an email that indicates you can get a fast appointment reservation by calling their special phone number, or offering you the vaccine at a “reduced cost” (the vaccines are free). Some of them actually offer to mail the vaccine to you. Don’t fall for any of these scams. If you need help signing up online for an appointment, call your doctor’s office or the senior center. Don’t give scammers any information, not even your name. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Welcome New Patients... ... To Our New Location!
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Childhood Vaccinations Still Mostly Effective ---
Our Office Offers: • Wisdom Teeth Extractions • Implants • Sedation Available • Financing Options • Laser Dentistry
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am in my mid-50s and in good health (I don’t take any medications). I rarely get sick with colds or flu. I have been vaccinated with all the common vaccinations for our childhood. With all the immigrants coming into our country, I am wondering if any have been given childhood vaccinations in their countries. I fear that chickenpox, measles, etc., could re-enter this country. If so, do our childhood vaccinations still protect us from these diseases? Should seniors be re-vaccinated or is that harmful at our age? -- C.S. ANSWER: Legal immigrants into the U.S. are required to have all vaccinations as recommended by the Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices. Undocumented immigrants are more difficult to study, but what data there is suggests that vaccination rates are roughly the same in the countries of origin of many undocumented immigrants as in the United States. In fact, several Central American countries have higher vaccination rates than the U.S. currently. Analysis of outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases have suggested that most of these outbreaks have come from visitors (Americans or foreign visitors) from countries with high levels of ongoing transmission who spread the disease to others during their infectious period. Because there are some communities where there are enough unvaccinated people due to medical reasons, personal choice or ineffective vaccination to allow spread of the disease, there continues to be ongoing infection in the U.S. This is especially true of measles. People born before 1957 are generally considered to be immune to measles, and the vast majority have had chickenpox. People born between 1963 and 1967 (that might be you) are at risk for having had ineffective measles vaccination, and those at risk should check their immunization status and may need revaccination, especially those in an area near an outbreak.

Neighbor’s Dog Is Giving Him the Eye
585-289-7326 Tues.-Fri. 10am-5pm, Sat. 10am-2pm
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My neighbor’s dog, every day since I moved into this house in rural New York, has a habit of coming up to the property line when I go out to check on my garden. She will stand right at the edge, lift a paw, bark at me, then turn around and leave. What’s up with that behavior? -- Jim G., via email DEAR JIM: That sounds like a well-behaved, well-trained dog. Or, your next-door neighbor has, or had, a low-power wire along the property edge that delivers a shock to a dog when it crosses the line. Whatever it is, she was trained not to cross into the neighbor’s yard. I like that you noted her body mannerisms. Raising a paw is a signal that she is alerted and checking you out. A nonaggressive bark is an attention signal. It’s something like, “I see you, and I want you to know that I’ve got my eye on you.” And her turning back after that bark is a good sign. She doesn’t see you as a threat. She’s said her piece, and now she’s off on her way. Being aware of a dog’s body language and barking is important even if you don’t own a dog. A bark followed by a growl (or vice versa) is a warning signal meaning “back off.” A raised paw and an intent stare at a specific object is typical of an alert and energetic but calm dog. A dog that charges and stops is being aggressive and there’s a good chance that behavior can escalate into an attack. If you get the opportunity to meet your neighbors, compliment them on their dog’s good behavior.

High Schools Sports Resume; Children to Benefit BY SCOTT WURTZEL
L
ocal high school sports are resuming; what do they need to do to stay open? Dr. Steven Schulz, a pediatric medical director for Rochester Regional Health, discussed the benefits of resuming these sports, and how to stay safe moving forward. February 1st was the first day local, high risk, high school sports being allowed to compete. During that day, Dr. Schulz answered multiple questions that pertained to the risks and benefits of student athletes being able to compete again. What are risks that come with lack of socialization? “We do know we are social beings, and socialization does benefit children,” Dr. Schulz stated. “Obviously, we have had our limitations with that because of Covid but there are smart and safe ways to allow that to resume, and we are definitely seeing concerns with mental health from kids who have been struggling, but these guidelines and updated recommendations reflect our improving rates of Covid in the region and the state.” What are mental and emotional benefits of resuming these sports? “Besides just the socialization and the positive self-esteem comes from doing well with sports, we all know with exercise we release endorphins that help our well-being,” says Dr. Schulz. “Hopefully kids will be sleeping better with some of those activities as well. We know from the physical side of things inactivity leads mostly to problems with obesity and bone density and all those sorts of things. We’ve seen weight increase throughout the pandemic, as folks have not been as active. Again, as this is all done safely, increasing physical activity and allow sports to resume can have a beneficial impact.” Dr. Schulz also explained that these benefits are possible because of how schools are handling safety. “We know the schools have been doing that safely: because they are using the screening protocols, because kids are staying home when they are sick, because kids are being identified quickly if they are not, because everyone is wearing masks, and following proper social distancing, making adjustments to classroom sizes and lunchroom sizes, and those kinds of things.”
“All sports are not the same in terms of risk, so that’s something else we definitely need to keep in mind,” Dr. Schulz pointed out. “The closer the contact, the more concern there is for potential spread of Covid. Indoors are of higher concern than outdoor activities. The more spectators, teammates, and people involved, the higher risk as well because the higher the chance any one person might be infected with Covid. There is definitely still risk there. There are new variants of the Covid virus out there in the community.”
Dr. Steven Schulz
Dr. Schulz followed it by saying, “With the precautions, the American Academy of Pediatrics has recently come out with updated guidelines on youth sports and the CDC has as well. One of the biggest things is that we are now recommending that all student athletes—with the exception of certain sports—wear a mask during competition.” Dr. Schulz went into further detail about minimizing risks. “During these competitions and during these practices, it’s really important that we limit who is there only to those who really need to be there, and that any kind of training that can be done without physical contact is ideal, and socially distanced as appropriate.” Spectators at these events also have rules to minimize risk. “There are regulations around spectators as well, limited to only two per athlete. The spectators should be masked, socially distanced, and staying home if they are not feeling well.”
We know that we can do this safely!
As for whether he has any advice for student athletes - Dr. Steven Schulz resuming sports, Dr. Schulz replied, “Some student athletes have been out of condition for a while. We can’t just jump in and expect you to do what you did a year or two ago, when you were training regularly.” He also mentioned, “There is going to be some buildup and it’s important to continue with stretching and following with coaches and trainers that are available to make sure you are doing everything in a safe way. Start small and build your stamina and endurance and your strength over time to prevent muscle injuries.”
With the effort the schools and students are putting in, there is data that reflects the reduced rates of COVID-19 in the area. “Schools have been successful in keeping Covid rates low,” Dr. Schulz says. “We recently just looked at the period from January 6th through the 22nd with the return of school, and the rate with orange zone testing in Monroe county schools was only 0.72%, compared to that of the population at 7.3%. We know that we can do this safely, and the hope now is that we can extend that to sports in addition to what the schools have been doing safely thus far.” What are risks that people should be aware of and how do they minimize those risks? As long as COVID-19 is still a factor, there are still risks to be on the lookout for when it comes to these high school sports.

In regard to student athletes who have gotten Covid after Dec 4th, Dr. Schulz explained they “should have an evaluation with their pediatrician or primary care physician to ensure that there are not any potential cardiac issues that would preclude them from returning to sports and that would prompt a more additional work up.” Dr. Schulz concluded, “It’s up to each person involved to do their part to maintain safety for everyone.”

WORKING PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE Many working parents struggle to maintain a healthy balance between their responsibilities at work and their obligations to their families. An inability to maintain that healthy balance can have adverse effects on men and women’s careers as well as the relationships they have with their families.
Contact: Nutrien Ag Solutions @ 585-384-5221 or e-mail resume: Rob.Curtin@nutrien.com
A 2015 survey of more than 2,000 adults commissioned by the workplace solution provider Workfront found that 38 percent of survey participants have missed life events because of a bad work-life balance. Access to technology that means work is never too far away might contribute to poor work-life balance, as 57 percent of respondents also acknowledged feeling that technology has ruined the definition of a family dinner. Finding a healthy balance between work and life at home may require a concerted effort on the part of working parents, but there are ways to successfully juggle a career and family.
