For Cats, Keyboards Are Just Unbearable

Auctions & Antiques _____________________11

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m writing in regard to the article on the keyboard-loving cat. My cats often react as if they’re disturbed by many specific sounds: voices from my phone speaker, noise from the radio or iPad, or clicking from typing on the keyboard. My cats are uncomfortable and confused. I believe that the sounds are not pleasant to them. When they paw at the phone screen or at me, I think it’s an attempt to stop, control or try to understand these noises that are bothering them. I’ve found that if I wear earbuds when using my cellphone or iPad, my cats don’t react. I silenced the “clicky” sounds when writing a text message on my phone. When I need to type, I put the cats in another room with a tasty treat to hold them until I’m finished. Our kitties are trying to adjust to our lifestyle, with all the technology we use today, and much of it is antithetical to their way of being! We need to compromise a bit and make adjustments that help them to be more comfortable. Thank you for your informative column each week -- Patricia D.W., via email

DEAR PATRICIA: What a great observation! Most of us think that when a cat walks across our keyboard, they are just seeking attention. But it may be something more. With their keen hearing, all that clickety-clacking may be driving them nuts -- and they’re jumping onto the keyboard to put a stop to it. Your solution speaks to the importance of observing our pets and their behavior to learn what is normal for them versus what makes them anxious or annoyed. Observation can give us the answer to many problem behaviors.

DID YOU KNOW? Though certain elements of modern-day Valentine’s Day celebrations can be traced back to the 14th century, chocolate is not one of them. In his 1382 poem, “Parlement of Foules,” English poet Geoffrey Chaucer became the first to connect romance with St. Valentine’s Day. Over the next several centuries, the day’s connection to romance only grew stronger, and by the Victorian era in England, it was not uncommon for lovers to profess their affections through songs, poetry and even the giving of roses as gifts. It was during the Victorian era that British chocolate manufacturer Richard Cadbury began searching for ways to use the cocoa butter that his company was extracting during the production of their drinking chocolate. In 1861, Cadbury decided to produce edible chocolates, which he even sold and marketed in heartshaped boxes decorated with images of Cupid and rosebuds. It would be a few more decades before edible chocolates caught on in the United States, where they remain a must-have item for many Valentine’s Day celebrants more than 150 years after Cadbury first began selling them. * Save and thoroughly clean foam egg cartons for kids’ paint palettes. The wells keep colors contained, and the flat space on the lid side is great for resting brushes. They are easy to rinse off and just as easy to recycle if you are done with them. * To help insulate your home to prevent heat loss, build up a mound of snow about 3 feet high at the foundation. Snow is a terrific insulator! -- E.S. in Michigan * When topping a pie with meringue, make sure that it touches all the edges of the pie crust. Otherwise it will shrink. * Wrinkled ribbons? You can use your curling iron or flat iron to give the satin a quick freshening up. * “You can use a little bit of cooking oil to remove the last bits of sticker adhesive from a glass picture frame. Remove as much of the paper sticker as possible, then dab the spot with oil on a paper towel. Rub off. When all the adhesive is removed, use glass cleaner.” -- R.H. in South Carolina * Got stale bread? If it’s not too stale, you can try to bring it back in the oven. Set on a low heat alongside -- but not in -- a pan with water. If it’s too far gone, you can always cut it up into cubes and make it croutons, or toast and grind into breadcrumbs. No waste!

Thanks for the rescue! Thank you so much to my veryy kind kind tire neighbor for digging my front tire out when I accidentally drove into the mud. We really would have stayed stuck without your help. Never liked a shopping cart bumping my heels from behind anyways. Clean shopping carts are wonderful. Was able to let my hair turn gray naturally. Sweet Christmas ornament I want to thank the anonymous person who sent me the cute little stuffed dog Christmas ornament in the mail on December 22nd. It made my day. It was so sweet. I have put all other ornaments away but have left this adorable ornament out. I smile every time I see it! Thank you again! Honoring Treaties I am so glad that President Biden is honoring the rights of the Lakota Nation by respecting their sovereignty in stopping the Keystone XXL pipeline through their native lands. What a fight they have had! As a newcomer to Canandaigua, it has been most

impressive for me that a treaty is signed yearly with the City Officials and the native people of this area: the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois Nation). What a respectful and demonstrative example you are to these First Nations and to so many other outsiders! While so many other native peoples who are spread out across this country have been so demoralized by unkept treaties, the Canandaigua community shows its high ideals to the ancestors of this great nation, whose example became the precursor to our Constitution.

ECO-FRIENDLY WAYS TO CELEBRATE VALENTINE’S DAY Offer living plants. Cut flowers certainly look beautiful, but they may require many resources for planting, cutting and transporting. That’s especially true for non-native, out-of-season flowers. Potted plants can live indefinitely as long as they are cared for properly.

Magic Maze – DEGREE

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Animals, Not Men Suffer Irritable Male Syndrome --DEAR DR. ROACH: Is there such a thing as irritable male syndrome, similar to PMS in women? If it is real, does it cycle yearly or monthly? My husband is negative and blames others for things at some times more than others. Also, is there a cure or ways to manage it? -- Anon. ANSWER: The term “irritable male syndrome” was coined in 2002 in a review of animal behavior, among male animals with a strictly seasonal breeding pattern. After mating season in these animals, testosterone levels drop markedly, and the animals exhibited symptoms of nervousness and irrationality. In humans, low testosterone has a set of common symptoms, including low libido and low overall energy. Loss of body hair and decreased muscle mass happen after prolonged time without testosterone. Psychiatric symptoms, such as depressed mood and anxiety, are less strongly tied to low testosterone levels. Most experts do not believe that the findings in animals are analogous to what healthy men experience. While it is possible that your husband has low testosterone, and that this level may be causing a degree of irritability, it is much more likely that his behavior has a different underlying cause than loss of testosterone. By contrast, premenstrual syndrome, where there are dramatic shifts in hormones, is clearly associated with mood swings, irritability, anxiety and depression. As the hormone changes are cyclical, so the symptoms are cyclical as well. No such cycles exist in men for testosterone. I have certainly known many irritable males, however, and anybody can be more irritable one day compared with another. I would note that, especially in men, irritability and being easily angered can be a sign of depression, among many other possibilities. ***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2021 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles New World, New Ways of Getting Things Done We’re in a whole new world now, and unfortunately it looks like it’s not returning to normal anytime soon. So many things have changed, and we need to make some adjustments to how we take care of ourselves. Timing: Whatever you need to do, do it earlier than you think you should. If you’re going to apply for Social Security, don’t wait until the last minute. Staffing might be lower than normal, with fewer workers to take up the slack. If you need an appointment, such as for an oil change for your car, do it sooner than you normally would, for the same reason. If you’ve been ordering groceries for pickup or delivery, you might notice a renewed slowdown in available time slots as stores, in many cases, have fewer clerks. Taking care of business: Even if you eligible to receive the COVID vaccine, don’t assume you can get one just by walking in. Make an appointment. Ask about parking and physical distancing. Although the shot is free to all Americans, bring your insurance card to help the provider pay for administering the vaccine. Be proactive: Do you know when your credit card expires? In the past you were likely sent a new one just before it expired, with instructions to cut up the old one. Now, with quite a few things slipping through the cracks, you might not notice your card has expired until you try to pay for a grocery order. Check your card and anything else with an expiration date, including the date of the tag renewal for your vehicle. (Note: I learned the hard way that my state is no longer sending out notices of tag expiration.)

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

Child Advocacy Council of the Finger Lakes: A Voice for the Children BY AMANDA DUDEK

I

n a time when many concerns fill our world, it is so important not to lose sight of our most precious gift: children. Optimistically, one may say most parents and guardians diligently protect their children and do everything they can to ensure their well-being. Ever the optimist, one might further say most adults also look out for the welfare of children. Even so, sometimes, there are individuals who bring harm to them. When this happens, places like the Child Advocacy Center of the Finger Lakes (CACFL) help to give these children a voice while supporting them and their families in finding safety, justice, healing, and a positive way forward. The CACFL is a state and federally accredited, non-profit organization serving Ontario, Seneca, and Yates Counties. “Essentially, we coordinate child abuse investigations, and we provide an advocate for every family,” explained CACFL Executive Director Jennifer Brownell. “Whenever there is an allegation of child abuse, we bring all of the relevant agencies together, such as law enforcement and Child Protective Services.” Brownell explains that this way, the child involved does not have to repeat his or her story to each agency. “When children have to tell their story so many times, they begin to think, ‘Why do I have to tell my story again? Doesn’t anyone believe me?’ They don’t want to talk about it anymore, so they shut down and stop telling their story,” said Brownell. “The CACFL’s model brings all of these agencies together, and we provide a forensic interviewer to talk with the child in a one-on-one narrative style, avoiding leading questions. This gives the child a chance to tell his or her story in a safe, child-friendly environment as relevant professionals watch via closed circuit in another room. This model often results in better investigations and more effective prosecution while keeping children in the center and their best interests at heart.” While the CACFL’s multidisciplinary approach finds its roots in a local team over 20 years ago, the CACFL itself opened in Phelps in 2008. In 2015, CACFL moved to Canandaigua, and it now has branches in Waterloo and Penn Yan. “It has grown very quickly since then,” shared Brownell. “In 2008, we had one full-time person, and now we have six, plus three contract advocates and three contract forensic interviewers.”

A child-friendly waiting room at CACFL These advocates and forensic interviewers also make a tremendous difference. “There are many reasons for a child abuse accusation, including custody issues,” said Brownell. “Having an advocate involved makes a tremendous difference to a child because an advocate is a voice for that child. Of course, most parents keep their children’s best interests at heart, but sometimes, their intentions become clouded by their own needs. An advocate’s whole purpose is to ensure the child’s best interests are served while also working with parents and caregivers to find them the support they need. I cannot say enough good about them.” Forensic interviewers also play a crucial role. “They create a space for children to tell their stories privately and openly,” explained Brownell. “It is difficult when children are not ready to disclose, and that is why mental health support is so important. The interview is relatively short, anywhere from 20-60 minutes; however, it is forensically sound. It can be used by law enforcement and in court; no one is putting words in the child’s mouth.” Essentially, a forensic interview provides a much more solid basis upon which to build a case in family or criminal court, if necessary.

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

The CACFL handles approximately 320 cases each year. While they are not all founded, this number indicates need. “Less than 50% of child abuse (nationally) is ever reported,” said Brownell. “It is worse now with the pandemic. Last spring, we saw a drop in reports, and sadly, we know it was not because children were suddenly not being abused. Children were seeing far fewer persons outside their home. While they rarely self-report, nationally, we were seeing an uptick. Jennifer Brownell, Kids had to call the hotline and report themselves because there was no one to Executive Director of CACFL report for them.” Nevertheless, there is hope, and caring adults can help. “Children need strong mentors in their lives who care about them and take the time to talk to them,” Brownell said. “Children also need mental health support to process a traumatic event. When the trauma is processed, they often become successful adults. When it is not, they often manifest depression, addiction, suicidal ideation, and other concerns.” “One abuse survivor said he did not have a CAC, and his grandparents had to sell their house to pay for the mental health services he needed,” continued Brownell with passion. “People should not have to sell their homes so that children who have been victimized can get the treatment they need. They need help healing while they are children.” Brownell pointed out that the CACFL helps fill in the gaps to pay for such services whenever possible. The CACFL’s efforts are making a difference. “We have seen an increase in arrests made and resulting convictions, which means we have created better investigations,” shared Brownell. “In April, we are launching a trauma training program for all professionals. It is also our goal to provide on-site medical exams. We are working with a provider who is undergoing training for these specialized exams, and we hope to reach our goal this spring.” “If you see something, say something,” Brownell advised. “We can help you determine – Jennifer Brownell whether or not a report should be made. Educate yourself and keep your eyes and ears open.” For more information, visit www.cacfingerlakes.org.

Milton Hershey dabbled in commercializing chocolate. Hershey began as a caramel maker, but experimented with covering the caramels in chocolate in 1894. Hershey would go on to develop one of the most successful brands of chocolate in the United States, which included the famous Hershey bar. In 1907, Hershey launched production of tear-drop shaped “kisses.” (The chocolates were given their unusual name because of the “smooching” noise made by the chocolate when being manufactured.) The kisses became wildly popular and made for affordable chocolate gifts on Valentine’s Day. Many other chocolate manufacturers soon began packaging their chocolates in special boxes for Valentine’s Day. Russell Stover and Whitmans are two such manufacturers who have long specialized in heart-shaped boxes or other decorative Valentine’s gifts.
