Can Indoor Cats Skip Yearly Vaccinations? Does COVID Restrict Travel With Pets? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m driving from New York to Colorado for a long-term contract job, and my two dogs will be coming with me. My roommate in New York is flying with my cat about a week later, because I don’t think my cat will do well on a long car trip (and I’m worried about her escaping). Are there any restrictions on pets traveling by plane or staying in hotels at this time? -- Beth G., Brooklyn DEAR BETH: It sounds like you’re doing your planning well in advance, and that’s great. Your dogs should be secured in the car while you’re traveling. Depending on their size and the type of car, they can be placed in a large kennel cage in the cargo area (with comfy beds, chew toys and access to water). Or they can stretch out on the back seat -- use a restraint device designed to keep dogs from sliding around the car or escaping from the vehicle. Many hotels are pet-friendly and have modified their cleaning procedures so that the hotel rooms will be clean and ready for the next guest. And more good news: Your friend and your cat can probably travel together in the airline cabin, as long as your cat is in a carrier (hard or soft sided) that will fit underneath the seat in front of your friend. (Some airlines are no longer shipping pets in the cargo area due to the disrupted flight schedules.) Book the airline seat with a pet option as soon as possible. Airlines allow a limited number of pets to travel in the cabin, even in a carrier. Those slots may fill up fast. Likewise for hotels: Book the rooms as soon as possible so that you know a pet-friendly room is waiting for you and your dogs.

CANANDAIGUA-NAPLES EDITION

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

CPAP Could Help With Sleep Apnea --DEAR DR. ROACH: How are sleep apnea, sighing and heart failure related? Recently, I was told that I have severe sleep apnea and that I must use a CPAP machine. I have noticed that during the day I frequently take a spontaneous deep breath. Is that sleep apnea while awake? I have coronary heart disease and have three stents. Will the CPAP machine help me in any way? -- A.P. ANSWER: It’s complicated. By far, the most common type of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea. This happens in people who are overweight, or in people whose neck anatomy predisposes them to the condition. During sleep, the upper airway collapses, preventing proper inspiration. This can be noticed by a sleep partner as choking, gasping or just not breathing for a prolonged time. The person eventually will wake up enough, due to lack of oxygen, to be able to take in a good breath, but will then fall back asleep. The process may happen hundreds of times a night, with the person often unaware. Sleepiness during the day (from never sleeping properly at night) and snoring are the most common symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea. A CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine, which uses high pressure to keep the airway open, is the most common initial treatment for obstructive sleep apnea. In severe sleep apnea, the oxygen level in the blood can be so low for so long that the heart and lungs can be damaged, eventually leading to a type of heart failure of the right side of the heart. However, the situation is even more complex. People who have other kinds of heart failure, such as from repeated heart attacks, can develop the less common form of sleep apnea, central sleep apnea. Although this also may be treated by CPAP, it is critical to treat the underlying heart failure as well. Your doctor can tell you whether you have central or obstructive sleep apnea. Spontaneous deep breaths (sighs) are a part of normal human physiology. Sighs have several purposes, but the most important is to help keep the lungs properly expanded. Sighs might be more common in people with heart failure, but I do not know of any correlation with sleep apnea. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Are deodorants containing aluminum safe to use? The brands that do not contain aluminum are much less effective. I am concerned about absorbing the aluminum from the deodorant and its effect on the brain. -- D.M. ANSWER: That’s a myth. The amount of aluminum in antiperspirants is negligible. Deodorants that aren’t also antiperspirants don’t contain aluminum. The aluminum mechanically blocks the sweat glands in the armpit, and 99.99% of it is not absorbed into the body. Longterm studies of people taking aluminum-based antacid (which is also poorly absorbed) have shown no increased risk of dementia. The body has several ways of removing the small amounts of aluminum we absorb, mostly via the kidneys. Aluminum toxicity IS a potential problem for people with kidney disease on dialysis, but the small amounts of aluminum in antiperspirants is too small to worry about even in those cases. There is absolutely no reason to be concerned about the health effects of aluminum on the brain. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. CARE FOR TOOLS PROPERLY Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Nov. 15, 1777, after 16 months of debate, the Continental Congress, sitting in its temporary capital of York, Pennsylvania, agrees to adopt the Articles of Confederation and Perpetual Union. Not until March 1, 1781, would the last of the 13 states, Maryland, ratify the agreement. * On Nov. 11, 1885, George Patton, one of the great American generals of World War II, is born in San Gabriel, California. Patton was controversial, known to make eccentric claims that he was a direct descendant of great military leaders of the past through reincarnation. * On Nov. 13, 1953, a member of the Indiana Textbook Commission calls for the removal of references to the book “Robin Hood” from textbooks used by the state’s schools. She claimed that Robin Hood was a communist because he robbed the rich and gave it to the poor. * On Nov. 9, 1965, Roger Allen LaPorte, a 22-year-old member of the Catholic Worker movement, immolates himself in front of the United Nations headquarters in New York. Before dying, LaPorte, who was against war, declared that he did it as a religious act.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Social Security Increase for 2021 The news is out. Our Social Security benefit increase starting in January 2021 will be less than it was for 2020. Instead of the 1.6% increase we received this year, they're cutting us back to 1.3% for Social Security benefits and Supplemental Security Income. For the average recipient, this comes to a whopping $20 per month. The average benefit will be $1,543 per month and $2,596 for a couple. The retirement earnings test exempt amount will change in 2021 as well. If you're not yet at full retirement age, the annual exempt amount will be $18,960 per year. During the first year you reach full retirement age, the limit will be $50,520 per year (before the month you reach that age). The way this is supposed to work is that when the annual inflation rate goes down, our cost of living adjustment also goes down. We allegedly don't need as much money to get through the month. (Although the cost of our groceries has gone up, the price of gas has gone down because no one is going anywhere now.) The Senior Citizens League guesstimated correctly a few months ago that our increase would be 1.3% -- the second lowest increase ever. Meanwhile our Medicare Part B premium continues to climb. The good news there is the "hold harmless" clause in the regulations. If the Medicare premium rises enough that it overtakes our Social Security increase, the dollar amount of the Part B premium will be reduced so we don't end up with fewer Social Security dollars than we received this year. This applies to most but not all of us. Keep an eye on the Senior Citizens League (seniorsleague.org). They fight for us when it comes to drug costs, veterans benefits, Medicare, Social Security and more. They're in Alexandria, Virginia, right across the river from Washington, D.C., and the halls of Congress.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

A Kind Gesture Goes a Long Way A few weeks back, my husband dropped his vehicle off for some work. Just prior to the business closing, they contacted him and stated they lost his keys, and the work did not get performed. As you can imagine, he was very upset. The next morning, we went to pick up his vehicle with our extra set of keys. (The business did offer to replace the key.) Later that afternoon, a kind and very thoughtful person knocked at our door with the paperwork and keys. We thanked him several times, but I wanted to share this story, because there are wonderful people out there, and they do make a lasting impression on others. He could have simply dropped them off to the place of

service, but he knew that key fobs are very pricey to replace. You went above and beyond! Thank you for renewing my hope in the human race.

Bad Driveway Recently, I had my driveway black topped. Before it was started, I asked the owner, who came out and gave me the estimate, if it was going to be a smooth finish. He assured me it would be. After I got it done, it was not a smooth finish. You can see all the stones almost as if it wasn’t rolled enough. It had a couple holes in it, and now there’s even grass growing up through it. The driveway is not even close to being level or a pitch away from my garage. I also said I didn’t want any rain coming into it and again was assured it would not happen. Guess what? I’m getting a lot of water into my garage now. Also, when they were rolling the driveway close to my garage, they damaged the trim and left. Now, they won’t fix that either.

To Daycamper In response to your annoyance with “noisy” neighbors who are bothering you with lawn mowing, power tools, etc.: Did it occur to you that the reason your neighbors are so noisy is because they can’t go anywhere! Due to Covid-19, everyone was stuck at home all summer for the most part. There were no vacations or festivals or carnivals or any kind of entertainment available the entire summer. I know we took advantage of the home time by doing home improvement projects and so on, and I’m sure we were probably noisy, as well. You can’t fault your neighbors for living their lives. Perhaps if you are so bothered by neighbors, you should consider relocating to the country away from all those annoying people.

Pleasant Surprise To the person who was at the Canandaigua McDonald’s drive through on Friday, October 23 at 4:45pm. What a pleasant surprise when we were told you paid for our order. Thank you for your kindness.

I agree! To the person who responded to Daycamper who complained about noise: I wholeheartedly agree with your logical comments. What gives lately? Neighbors complaining about noise.... having something to say about music and everything else. They need to wake up and smell the roses and stop pointing a finger. They need to get a life or move in the country where they will only be able to hear their own noise. I feel sorry for people like that who are apparently so lonely and unhappy that they have nothing better to do than to complain about trivial matters.

Turkey is often overshadow ed by other meats in refrigerated display cases, but it remains an excellent source of protein in a low -fat package. A typical 3.4- to four-ounce serving of skinless turkey breast (about the size of a deck of cards) contains around 30 grams of protein, providing about 65 percent of the average person’s recommended daily allotment of protein. Protein helps the body feel full and serves many essential functions in the body. Proteins regulate the entry of nutrients through cell w alls, help the body grow and help it to generate antibodies that fight against illness.

Honeoye: At age 78, Tom passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Thursday, October 29, 2020 at the FF Thompson Hospital in Canandaigua, NY. He was born in Rochester, NY to the late Robert and Veronica Poore. Survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Ruth Poore; his children, Tim Poore and his wife Sibel, Terri Wagaman, Mitch Wagaman (son-in-law), Jody Poore, Matthew Poore and his wife Aarti; his sister, Pat Harris; and his grandchildren, Natalie Senter and her husband Josh, Bailey Wagaman, Chloe Poore, Lila Poore, and Isabella Poore. Tom was a devoted husband, dad, and papa, and cherished by many; he truly loved and took pride in his family. He was happiest at his Keuka lakehouse, boating, fishing, and taking his grandkids tubing. He loved watching his kids and grandkids play sports. He was their biggest fan and supporter, never missing a game. When he wasn’t in the stands at his kid’s/grandkid’s games, he was rooting for his beloved Buffalo Bills. You would find him every Sunday with his Bills gear on from head to toe. In keeping with Tom’s wishes, no formal funeral service will be held. Bears & Dolls Join the Fight Against Childhood

Cancer

BY AMANDA DUDEK

S

eptember is Childhood Cancer Awareness month. If you didn’t know that, you are not alone. Lynne Stiefler of Henrietta, a retired pediatric oncology nurse at Strong Memorial Hospital, is working to change that both by bringing joy into the lives of children battling cancer, as well as by bringing awareness of their Lynne Stiefler struggle to others. As a senior level bone marrow pediatric nurse and educator, Stiefler had interacted with many children fighting cancer and their families. After retiring, she continued to connect with them and felt she had to do something to encourage these brave children. So, in 2013, Stiefler launched Cure Bears for Hope and Love. She purchases Build-a-Bears, each with an outfit, and sends each one to a child who is in active treatment for cancer. “About 2,500 bears have been sent out across the country to date,” she shared. They have been sent to children in all 50 states; however, we try to stick with the lower 48. We do concentrate within our own area and deliver them locally, as well.” As requests for the bears grew, so did support. “People connect with me to support what we do,” said Stiefler, noting that Cure Bears is not an official nonprofit. “It is also popular for people to return their cans and bottles at Upstate Bottle Return locations in Avon, Henrietta, Brockport, Caledonia, Holley, Medina, Albion, Greece, and Penfield. They simply state the returns are in support of Cure Bears, and we receive a check from them. We raised about $5,000 in 6 months.” Stiefler knows from her nursing experience the positive effects such a simple gift can have. “The bears often go through treatment with the child,” she Little girl hugs her Cure Bear! explained. “One five-yearold, little girl from Nebraska dressed her bear like a superhero when it was going in with her for chemo or radiation. When they were doing other things, she dressed it in ordinary clothes. She said the bear was only a superhero when it was fighting cancer. How incredible for a five-year-old to say that!” Last year, Stiefler added something new. In September 2019, Wal-Mart released My Life as Survivor dolls, a doll similar in style to American Girl dolls, but created to resemble a girl who has undergone treatment for childhood cancer. Stiefler began purchasing and gifting these dolls to children in Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse, and Canada. When she brought one for a friend’s daughter in Kentucky, she soon received requests for more. “Originally, Wal-Mart had only planned on producing this doll as a special edition from September 2019-September 2020, in honor of Childhood Cancer Awareness month,” said Stiefler. “I started a petition to keep the dolls in production. Wal-Mart saw my petition, and one of their executives along with a representative

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

from the company which manufactures the doll reached out to me. They said they now planned to continue producing the Survivor doll and said they would like to send me some.” Then, COVID-19 brought our country to a near standstill. “With the pandemic, I hadn’t heard from them, and I honestly only expected a few,” said Stiefler. “Wal-Mart sent us 50 to deliver. I was wowed! They have all been delivered, My Life as Survivor doll and we have probably sent over next to a real life hero! 250 at this point. These dolls are a good thing. They give a child something with which to identify when they lose their hair.” The response to the dolls has been incredible. “We are typically limited to shipping in the continental US due to costs,” explained Stiefler. “One mother contacted me and explained that her daughter was in treatment. She asked me if I would consider sending her daughter a Survivor doll, but she was in South Africa. Fortunately, she had a friend in the United States with an address to which I could send the doll. That friend sent the doll to this little girl, and the little girl was so excited. There are so many photos I have received of happy children who have received our bears and dolls.” Lynne Stiefler hopes she will be able to continue - Lynne Stiefler sending Cure Bears and Survivor dolls to children and their families. “These are a tangible reminder that no child is fighting cancer alone,” she said. “With the pandemic, these children are more isolated than ever before. They really love getting something in the mail. Right now, it is even more meaningful.” To learn more or to donate, visit Cure Bears for Hope and Love on Facebook.

Overnight hours John 585-435-7939 STEPS TO LEAVE A JOB GRACEFULLY Deciding to leave a job is seldom an easy decision. However, it’s a more common decision than many people may know, as the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates the average worker holds 10 different jobs before age 40. People change jobs for a variety of reasons. Some do so because of better opportunities elsewhere, while others simply need a change. Regardless of what’s motivating a job change, leaving a place of employment can elicit various emotions, including some that may contribute to negative thoughts about a current employer. But it’s always best to leave a job gracefully, which can pay dividends down the road.

WOMEN AND STEM The number of women entering the professional fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is slowly growing around the world, but there is still a sizable gender gap in these professions. According to the College Board, which produces many standardized tests, only 27 percent of all students taking the AP Computer Science exam in the United Science are women. Similarly, just 18 percent of American computerscience degrees are attained by females. However, this is not the case elsewhere in the world. A paper by Gijsbert Stoet and David Geary published in Psychological Science noted that women who live in countries with traditionally higher gender inequality tend to choose STEM professions more readily. Algeria, for example, has one of the highest ratios of women in STEM professions, at 41 percent. Stoet and Geary surmise that women in these countries may be choosing careers with the strongest path to financial independence. According to a U.S. Department of Education report, students studying science or math in college have a higher employment rate and salary than other majors after graduation. STEM majors typically earn an average of $15,500 more annually than nonSTEM majors. Engineering and engineering technology tends to pay the most. Women eager to secure competitive, stable and well-paying jobs should carefully consider the opportunities available to them in STEM fields.
