HOW TO M AKE OLDER HOM ES M ORE ENERGY EFFICIENT Stay on top of your home. M uch like older vehicles, older homes require a little extra TLC on the part of homeow ners. Don’t allow your home to fall into disrepair. Even if your energy bills are not on the rise, inspect w indow s and doors to make sure they are closing tightly, as over time such seemingly minor problems can add up to substantial energy loss. Don’t forget to clean gutters and dow nspouts, removing debris that can add up and lead to w ater damage that may ultimately compromise the effectiveness of your home’s insulation.

Local Shelters Need Your Help by Kevin W. Dougherty and Michael P. Dougherty
POINTS OF REFERENCE According to the Population Reference Bureau (PRB), a nonprofit organization that collects and supplies statistics necessary for research and academic applications, more than 108 billion humans have ever been born. With the current population of the world standing close to 8 billion people, it is easy to see that the number of humans lying buried beneath the earth in cemeteries and other sites vastly outnumbers the number of people walking the earth, and will continue to do so. With this in mind, we can realize that the pursuit of adequate cemetery space is a concern that far predates the current “green burial” movement’s current concerns. Over the centuries, Parisians, Londoners, and Romans have faced cemetery relocation and expansion issues. People often select a funeral home or cemetery because it’s close to home, has served the family in the past, or has been recommended by someone they trust. But limiting the search to just one funeral home may risk paying more than necessary for the funeral or narrowing the choice of goods and services. To learn more about our funeral services, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. Please tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. QUOTE: “The cemetery is an open space among the ruins, covered in winter with violets and daisies. It might make one in love with death, to think that one should be buried in so sweet a place.” Percy Bysshe Shelley QUOTE: “No one actually dead until the ripples they cause in the world Sign up to isreceive obituary notifi cations at: die away.” www.doughertyfuneralhomes.com Terry Pratchett

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I run a shelter in a rural area, and I wanted your readers to know that there is still a great need for donations of any kind at my shelter and just about every animal shelter in the country. While cash is the biggest way to help a local shelter obtain food, medical supplies and other items to take care of lost and abandoned pets, we also accept donations of goods. Pet food, old blankets and pet toys are always appreciated. The best way to make sure your donation is needed is to call your local shelter and ask what they need! Believe me, shelter workers won’t hesitate to tell you, because they know what items are needed and they usually need them right away. -- Carol in Alexandria, Louisiana DEAR CAROL: Thank you for all that you do for animals! Readers, take note that animal shelters, like many businesses, are struggling and getting by day to day during this ongoing pandemic. Anything that you can donate will be appreciated. Find local shelters by searching online or on Facebook. Contact the shelters by phone or email to find out what they need. One thing I see a big call for from rescue shelters is old newspapers. These are used to line the bottom of cages -- they are easy to put in and easy to clean up. Used collars and leashes also are welcome. If you don’t have pet items to donate, find out if the shelter needs office supplies. Pens, printer paper, sticky notes, file folders and other items may be gratefully accepted. Send your tips, comments and questions to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles We Seniors Have Financial Clout Have you given any thought to just how much financial clout we seniors have? Not because we necessarily have a lot of money, but because there are so many of us. As a “silver block” we can make some changes. And with every day that passes, more and more people join our group. Shopping locally has immediate benefits close to home. According to the Small Business Administration, for every $100 spent locally, $48 of it stays in the community. At a big-box chain store, only $14 stays in town. Consider that every local purchase you make might actually be the one that keeps a neighbor employed as small businesses struggle to stay open. Foods that are made locally will be in your hands when they’re fresher. And you’re likely to get better service and free delivery from a local business that’s grateful for your order. Check a list of stores in your area to see if they have websites. If not, call and ask how orders are placed. Look for local farmers who sell their products at farmers markets. Call local appliance dealers before your next big purchase. Contact bakeries, shoe stores, and toy, pet and furniture stores that are locally owned. If shopping locally is too limiting, expand your view to goods made in the U.S.A. As a block, we have a lot of clout there as well. Finding those items, however, can be difficult. When it comes to products made in America, here are a few websites that list by category dozens or hundreds of items made here: I Buy American Store (www.ibuyamericanstore.com). Made in America Store (madeinamericastore.com). Clark Howard (clark.com). Put “Made in America” in the search box and look for 100-plus brands made in the U.S.A. Do your homework before you place an order. Call the individual manufacturer to verify that the items are indeed made in America.

GUIDELINES FOR HOMETOWN EVENTS:
information about H. pylori infection? I was diagnosed with it recently via biopsies taken during an endoscopic procedure. I was given instructions on antibiotics to be taken, which I followed through on. When talking to my doctor’s physician assistant, I asked what could have caused the infection to try to prevent it from recurring. I was given a very cursory response, including that it could have come from eating at “Mom and Pop” restaurants. From research I did after that, it seems that it can be present for a long period of time without being noticed, and many times the cause is unsure. After I finished the antibiotics, I was told to have a follow-up test to make sure they were effective. I was given a choice of a stool test or a breathing test; I chose the breathing test. I was surprised at how easy it was. Are those tests also used to initially detect an infection, without a biopsy? -- A.J.Y. ANSWER: Helicobacter pylori is an important cause of chronic gastritis (stomach inflammation), the most important cause of stomach ulcers, and is an important factor in stomach cancer and intestinal lymphoma. Between 50% and 66% of the population of the world is affected. The older a person is, the more likely he or she is to have infection: In the U.S., it’s about 10% in those between 18 and 30 years old, but 50% in those over 60. This likely represents an improvement in hygiene, as most infections are acquired in childhood and persist throughout life. It is thought that most infection occurs person-to-person, possibly through water or from poor handwashing before food preparation. H. pylori is much more common in developing nations. In the U.S., infection is more common in people of lower socioeconomic status. Not everyone with H. pylori has symptoms or needs treatment. People with ulcers or gastritis are generally treated with several antibiotics for 10-14 days along with antacid medicine. The diagnosis can be made by biopsy, as yours was, or by the stool or breath test. The breath test is at least 95% specific (if the test is positive, it’s very likely to be a true positive) but 90% sensitive, meaning one person in 10 with the bacteria will have a false negative test. The stool test is close to 95% sensitive and specific. Blood testing is more likely to have false positive and false negative results. In addition to making the diagnosis, the stool or breath test is recommended to confirm eradication of the infection. For more reading, I’d recommend you start at https:// medlineplus.gov/helicobacterpyloriinfections.html. ***

s e v Ra Top this one! There are many great stories of “paying it forward,”but this time, I was on the receiving end of a very surprising and generous one. Stepping out from behind the same BJ’s gas pump I was about to use, not only did “Paul” offer to fill my gas tank on this cold, blistery day, but he also refused to use my credit card! He had already paid on the other side of the gas pump! His only request was that I “Pay it forward,” which I have done, and will continue to do. Thanks again, Paul, for your thoughtfulness and generosity. Best wishes, and God bless you!

COVID is one day closer to being in the rearview mirror, and we have all learned new coping skills to get us through. Not that my family has been unscathed by illness and loss, but I’m still grateful every day that we’re headed in the right direction.
Thanks, Dogwood! The folks at the Dogwood Trading Company are always pleasant and professional. They are top notch!
Essential workers If I hear "Thank you for all you're doing" one more time, I'm gonna puke! I've been working through this whole pandemic while others have been working from home, and it just doesn't mean anything to say thank you anymore! Maybe a paid day off or a little extra money would go a lot further than the "Thank You" in the front yard!
New vehicle tech Could someone please manufacture a plain vehicle without all the over-the-top tech in it? I want to look at and out the windshield please, not at the dash. I have a brain. I can read a map...if I could find one. My phone has GPS so no need to sync. Just more to go wrong, and everything to pay attention to, except the road. Numbers I recently read an article quoting, 'Numbers don't lie.” but remember, the people putting the numbers together can, and do, lie.
Let it go I am stunned by the number of Trump 2020 flags, banners, and signs that are still all over [local] County. It is time to take them down. If you wish to purchase a Trump 2024 flag, feel free to do so and fly it at the appropriate (election) time. I thought that all election signs were supposed to be taken down in a timely manner according to local ordinances. Let's move on, please!

Spring into Conservation with this Monroe County Program! BY SCOTT WURTZEL & AMANDA DUDEK
A
lthough it may not quite feel like it yet, spring is coming our way very quickly. If you enjoy nature and growing things, your green thumbs may be starting to tingle. The Monroe County Soil and Water (MCSW) Conservation District is here to help you make the most of your spring planting. The MCSW Conservation District’s annual conservation tree, shrub, and plant program has started for the spring, and they are looking to sell a variety of items to support the community to help in the local conservation efforts. The MCSW offers “a wide variety of evergreens, hardwood trees, shrubs, wildflowers, groundcovers, seed mixes, plant variety conservation packs, and even enhancement items like bluebird nesting boxes and bat roosting boxes! Proceeds from the annual sale will benefit the MCSW Conservation District’s education and preservation programs.” These programs include youth education, explaining the important process of conservation, the repercussions of natural ills such as pollutants, stormwater runoff, and soil erosion while encouraging future generations to preserve our beautiful natural world.
Getting involved in local conservation is crucial. The MCSW includes some reasoning behind this in their catalog, including answers as to why planting native species is beneficial. “Planting trees and shrubs is perhaps the most effective way for individuals to help keep our environment clean and green,” the MCSW explains. “In addition to providing shade, privacy, wildlife habitat, borders, windbreaks and snow fences, trees provide many environmental benefits not visible to the eye. They work as filters to help protect drinking water, clean the air of pollutants, help mitigate stormwater runoff and stabilize soil to prevent erosion, and reduce noise by acting as sound barriers.” The MCSW Conservation District is not the only district promoting conservation, of course. The Livingston County Soil and Water Conservation District, the Ontario County Soil

and Water Conservation District, and the SWC districts in most other New York counties are also taking greenery orders. The information provided by these local conservation districts is extremely helpful, including such facts as what kind of soil each plant needs, whether it grows quickly, moderately or slowly, as well as the expected full-grown height of the plant. It also suggests best uses for each item, such as erosion prevention and windbreak. Experts also sing the praises of conservation. In her article on the USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service site, author Ciji Taylor also supports growing plants. “By incorporating native plants into conservation practices, a landowner can achieve their primary resource concern and provide wildlife habitat,” Taylor stated. “For example, using native grasses in filter strips reduces nutrient runoff and provides habitat for several species of wildlife. Native plants can be used in several conservation practices or planted in your home garden.” While some of the plants offered by these conservation districts are not native species, they have been proven to grow well locally, and they mitigate a host of environmental conservancy and protection ills. Spring is a time of rebirth and new life, reigniting one’s love of nature. Even a few additional trees and shrubs can make a difference to your property, local wildlife, and the earth. To get involved with local conservation, visit the MCSW’s catalog here. For more information, visit www.monroecountyswcd.org. ° µ ¾ À À ¾ É Ì Ñ Ò Ì Ñ ÒÓ À

Brief breaks during the work day can dramatically improve one’s ability to focus on a task. A 2011 study published in the journal Cognition found that brief mental breaks can improve focus on a prolonged task. The study’s authors tested participants’ ability to focus on a repetitive computerized task for 50 minutes under various conditions. The control group performed the task without breaks or diversions. The switch group and non-switch group memorized four digits before performing the task and were directed to respond if they saw one of the digits on the screen while performing the task. The switch group was the only group to be presented with the digits twice during the experiment, and both groups were tested on their memory of the digits at the end of the task. Most participants’ performance declined considerably over the course of the 50-minute task. However, the performance of those in the switch group did not decline at all, as the two brief breaks to respond to the digits allowed them to maintain their focus throughout the experiment. The researchers behind the study concluded that the switch group’s performance was steady because the brain is built to detect and respond to change, and its performance will actually suffer if it must maintain prolonged attention on a single task without taking a break. Professionals with a lot on their plates may see their performance improve by taking frequent mental breaks throughout the workday.

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * If your pooch doesn’t like to poop in the snow, here’s a great trick to secure a patch of grass (even if frozen). Lay a square of plywood down on the ground with a rope secured as a handle. After a snow, pull up the wood to reveal the ground underneath. * Use mismatched socks to protect glass items when transporting them from place to place, or even in storage. * Refillable spray bottles work best for cleaners. Refills can be economical, they put less waste in the system, and here’s one more reason: less propellants used, which can be a serious irritant to lungs. Purchase an attractive bottle, and then look up some recipes for ecofriendly cleaners. You might be surprised how well they work and how great they smell! * “Add some nuts to your morning cereal or smoothie for a nutritious boost. It’s not just for oatmeal or granola. I like to crush a handful of walnuts and sprinkle them across my waffles.” -- J.E. in Maine * Get rid of the smell of burned popcorn in your microwave by setting a bowl of coffee grounds in it overnight. Somehow, when you remove it in the morning, it smells of neither popcorn nor coffee!
