NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Trying to spot roof damage but not quite sure you’re ready for a trip up the ladder? Before you get up on the roof, get out your binoculars. You’d be surprised how much you can see from the ground, and you can do a cursory examination and then decide if anything needs a closer look. * Upcycle an unused bread box as a charging station. Simply mount a power strip in the back of the box on the inside, and you can put phones and other small devices directly inside to charge. Run a cord through the side so that larger tablets can sit on top of the box to charge. * “Use lip balm to help a tootight ring slide off of a finger. This happened to me when I tried on my sister’s ring in church. I had some lip balm in my pocket, and it helped me get the ring off quickly and quietly without having to get up.” -- A.E. in Washington * If your phone’s buzzing and ringing with alerts has you distracted during your workday, use the “do not disturb” function to create periods of quiet. Schedule blocks of deep focus time by making an appointment with yourself in your calendar. This can help you to organize your time to get things done. * Using cold water for laundering protects colors and uses less energy. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Aesthetic appeal is one of the most sought-after benefits of gardening. However, many homeowners put in so much effort planting for one particular season that they may not give thought to ensuring the garden looks vibrant no matter the time of year. Gardeners can research planting zones to find plants that will blossom at different times of the year so they can enjoy impressive, aesthetically appealing gardens year-round. Spring bulbs can bloom early on, while annual and perennial summer favorites will thrive under the summer sun. Beautyberry and caryopteris will fill out in the autumn, while holly or mahonia can look lovely in the winter.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Your recent answer on whether cats can get COVID-19 is correct: There is very little data, and only a few recorded cases, of house pets testing positive for this coronavirus. So the risk of pets getting ill from it may be low, but I think that a much higher risk for cats is when they’re allowed to roam outside. Not only can they be exposed to feline diseases like FIV, but the critters they catch, like small lizards and songbirds, may also carry diseases. For example, many songbirds carry salmonella, a bacterial infection that can be fatal to cats. -- Greg, via email DEAR GREG: That’s absolutely right, as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention mentions on its website (www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/ COVID-19 and Animals). Thank you for pointing this out. I’ve written frequently about the risks faced by cats that are allowed to roam outdoors -- from being struck by vehicles to being attacked by feral cats or other wildlife, like coyotes. Outdoor cats also are direct threats to other wildlife. I’m sure most cat owners are familiar with the 2013 study published in Smithsonian Magazine that estimated about 2.4 billion birds and around 12.3 billion small animals are killed by outdoor cats each year. While feral cats certainly are part of the problem, we can at least keep our housecats from contributing to the massive number of small critters killed each year. Folks, keep your cats indoors. If you’ve got a cat that insists on being outside, find a compromise: perhaps a screened enclosure in the backyard or a window seat, so your cat can watch the world go by. Bolstering bird populations and reducing the risk of transmitted diseases is worth it.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
TB Test Recommended Only for Those at Risk ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a nursing student in my 30s and originally from the Philippines. As part of my testing, I had a skin test for tuberculosis, which was positive. I had a friend in the hospital recently with tuberculosis. My doctor has recommended that I get treated for latent tuberculosis. What does this mean? -- A.C.S. ANSWER: Most people who are exposed to tuberculosis will not develop the disease. Some people will develop “latent” infection. This means there is active tuberculosis bacteria in their body, but their system is keeping it from becoming a fullblown infection. People in this situation are at risk of the latent tuberculosis escaping the immune system and developing into tuberculosis. Treatment of the latent tuberculosis is intended to reduce the risk of this happening. Testing is recommended only for people who are likely to be treated. You have two reasons to be tested: First, as a health care worker -- congratulations on becoming a nurse, we need you! -you are at risk of acquiring tuberculosis infection and should be screened. Second, people born in the Philippines are at risk for having acquired tuberculosis, often in childhood. People in their 30s are generally at very low risk of serious side effects from the medications used to treat latent tuberculosis infection. Isoniazid (INH) and rifampin are the medicines commonly used. Since the risk of developing disease later in life is much higher than the risk of a serious side effect, treatment is recommended in your case. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m an 85-year-old woman with no major health problems. I lead an active life and exercise daily. About four years ago, I began being bothered by cold feet at night. At first, I could just wear socks to bed. Now I must put my feet in an electric heated pouch in my bed, which doesn’t stay in place. When I travel, I take the heated insoles skiers use to keep their feet warm. Without some device, I’m kept awake by a feeling of icy soles. I am not diabetic. I’ve described the problem to a neurologist, a rheumatologist and my primary caregiver. No one has explained what causes the icy feet or if there’s any cure. Is there one? -- J.S. ANSWER: There are quite a few possible causes for your cold feet, and your doctors need to first identify why they are cold. To do this, they should start by checking the blood flow to the feet. At age 85, the likelihood of blockages to the arteries in your feet are pretty high. A simple test can make the diagnosis. Since blockages in the feet predict blockages in the heart too, it’s important to know. Treatment can improve symptoms as well as reduce risk of a heart attack. Severe anemia and low thyroid levels can cause very cold feet. Nerve damage is common in diabetes and unusual without it, but a neurologist should have found physical findings for neurologic causes. Raynaud’s syndrome, which usually happens in the hands, occasionally affects the feet preferentially to the hands. Medicines, especially beta blockers, can cause cold feet. Sometimes there isn’t a known cause, and physicians are left advising on treatments to relieve symptoms. I wouldn’t give up before a circulation test, however. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2021 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

PeakTPA offers healthcare management services to health plans, Managed Care Advantage and Programs of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE). On December 31, 2021, PeakTPA learned that patient data stored in two of its Amazon Web Services cloud servers was illegally accessed in a ransomware attack. On February 9, 2021, PeakTPA notified ElderONE (PACE), an affiliate of Rochester Regional Health of the ransomware incident and that ElderONE participant data may have been involved. Upon learning of the incident, PeakTPA thoroughly investigated the situation, contacted federal law enforcement, and contracted with specialized third-party agencies, which determined that certain patient information had been revealed. PeakTPA’s agent successfully negotiated with the attacker and was provided evidence by video that the seized data was deleted. Furthermore, since the attack, the criminal group behind it was disrupted by U.S. federal authorities. On February 22, 2021, following an extensive review and analysis of the data at issue, ElderONE determined that ElderONE participant data was impacted by the incident. The information accessed by the attacker may have included participants’ full names, medical record numbers, dates of service, and/or diagnosis and treatment information. Importantly, addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, and financial information were not exposed. There is no evidence that any data has been misused, disseminated, or otherwise made publicly available. PeakTPA has provided the affected participants with written notification of this incident and is providing credit monitoring, fraud consultation, and identity theft restoration at no cost for up to three years. PeakTPA is also advising the affected participants on other actions to protect their personal information, including reviewing their financial account statements and explanation of benefits statements for fraudulent or irregular activity on a regular basis. Additionally, PeakTPA has instituted additional protections to protect against incidents like this in the future. For more information about this data security event, PeakTPA released a public statement regarding the incident, available at https://peaktpa.com/data-notice/. If you have questions, please contact Kroll at (855) 761-0196 Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Central Time, excluding major U.S. holidays. You may also contact PeakTPA by emailing PeakEventInfo@CareVentionHC.com.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Vaccinated? COVID Advice Clear as Mud If you’re confused about COVID vaccine and when our lives are going to change for the better, you’re not alone. We’re considered to be fully vaccinated once two weeks have passed after the second dose of Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, or two weeks after the one-dose Johnson & Johnson. What’s new is this, per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: If fully vaccinated, you can be indoors with other fully vaccinated people without wearing a mask. You can meet indoors with unvaccinated people in one household unless one of those people has a health risk. If you’ve been around someone who has COVID, you don’t have to stay away from people or get tested unless you have symptoms ... or live in a group setting. In that case, stay away from others for 14 days and get tested, even if you don’t have symptoms. Clear as mud, right? It gets worse. According to the CDC, as fabulous as this new vaccine is, even if fully vaccinated, we still need to wear masks in public. We still need to social distance. We still need to avoid medium and large crowds. We still need to stay out of poorly ventilated spaces. We should delay travel. So what’s the holdup? Why are we still under restrictions after getting the vaccine? The best I can figure out is that the answer lies with the COVID variants, the different versions created as the virus mutates. It appears that not all of the vaccines work equally well on all of the variants. Frankly, some of the vaccines work rather poorly, depending on which variant it encounters. Until scientists figure this out, we still need to be cautious: wear masks, stay away from people, stay out of crowds. Except for getting the vaccine, not much has changed. Was that the Easter Bunny? BY AMANDA DUDEK
I
don’t know how it happened, but Easter came and went faster than a twitch of the Easter Bunny’s whiskers. It didn’t help that the holiday came early this year, either. Just out of March, people hardly had the chance to sniff the April air before candy, colored eggs, and chicks filled their homes. For many, Easter is a time of great religious importance. It is a time of reflection, tradition, and rejuvenation. Today, the busyness of modern life, from work to family to social obligations, can overshadow this traditional downtime of the soul. Whether or not Easter holds particular significance to those celebrating it, most enjoy its restful respite, a much-needed break from the stresses of everyday life. Ready for a spring refresh? Try one (or all) of our 5-minute activities for introspection and mindfulness. 1. Give more hugs. We’re serious! Hugs are one of the most powerful, grounding, natural stress relievers loved ones can give to each other. (Of course, be thoughtful about whom you hug, considering safety, and be certain not to choose those whom it would most likely be inappropriate to hug, such as coworkers or strangers.) For this activity, hug your loved one three times in a row. For each hug, take three deep breaths or count to twenty. This lengthier embrace releases oxytocin, a hormone that can improve your outlook, lower your blood pressure, and reduce your heart rate. 2. Declutter a specific spot. Clutter in one’s workspace and living space all too often translates to clutter in one’s mind and semiconscious, which can have emotional repercussions. Decluttering a whole home, room, or even workspace can be very overwhelming. Instead, choose one specific space and set a 5-minute timer. Take a moment to consider each item before you give it space or throw it away. Imagine these items belong to a stranger. What story do all the items tell? Is this a story you are satisfied with, or is it time to change a few things? This third person perspective can offer some surprises.
3. Take a short self-assessment. A brief personal assessment, such as Adult Wellness Compass Self-Assessment by Samaritan Family Wellness, is a great way to check in on your well-being. The assessment divides your personal wellness into four categories: Heart (relationships & emotions), Soul (spirituality & rest and play), Mind (vocation & organization), and Strength (care for body & resilience). It is easy to get so busy caring for others and fulfilling obligations that we forget to ensure our own reserves are regularly being replenished. As this assessment aptly observed, such evaluations simply help you recognize which parts of your metaphorical garden could use a little more “watering.” 4. Unplug and center yourself. Nearly every guide for self-assessment and renewal includes elements of meditation and escaping ever-present screens. They may have a point. Consider setting aside five minutes for unplugged reflection at the beginning of each day. Not only does this give you a centered space from which to order and launch your day, but it also guarantees you at least one quiet moment no matter what the day may bring. 5. Spice things up with something new. One of the best parts of “out with the old” is “in with the new!” Think about adding a new hobby to your skill set, pursing a new interest, making new friends, or even just changing up your everyday routine by arranging your tasks in a new pattern, such as taking your trash out before dinner rather than afterwards. These changes keep your mind active, and they also encourage you to evaluate the things you already have in your life. Springtime is a time for taking stock, cleaning out the unnecessary, experiencing rebirth, and embracing new life. If this traditional time for reflection and renewal has also slipped by you at the speed of light, it’s not too late to grab a few mindful moments in the spirit of the season. Happy Easter!

Penny Saver
by Kevin W. Dougherty and Michael P. Dougherty
A SENSE OF FOREBODING Hi, I’m Lenetta, and I’m a female leopard gecko. My owner, Josiah, takes good care of me, and sometimes he lets me ride on his shoulder. I love him so much that I will try to climb out of my tank whenever I see him. On April 1st I turned three years old, and for a present this year Josiah got me waxworms (my favorite!) and a little sister named Lea. Lea’s previous owner couldn’t take care of her anymore, so Josiah took her in. Lea is learning to trust Josiah and is quickly getting big and strong.
There is much anecdotal evidence concerning individuals who have purported to sense the imminence of death. Perhaps the most famous example of this foreboding revolves around Abraham Lincoln, whom it is said told his wife and close friends of a dream that he had in the days leading to his death. In the dream, he walked into the White House East Room to find a covered corpse guarded by soldiers and surrounded by mourners. When he asked a nearby soldier who had died, the response was that it was the President, who had been assassinated. Whether this account is true or not, many much lessfamous individuals have had premonitions of death, which might be owed to a heightened sensibility.
Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.
Life is full of opportunities to show someone we love them. One such opportunity is the funeral or memorial service. Such a loving event celebrates the choices they made, the relationship you shared, and honors the memory of your loved one. KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME accommodates all families. To learn about our funeral services, please call (585) 346-5401. Please tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY.
MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On April 10, 1906, O. Henry’s second short story collection, “The Four Million,” is published. It includes one of his most beloved stories, “The Gift of the Magi,” about a poor but devoted couple who each sacrifice their most valuable possession to buy a gift for the other.
QUOTE: “Pay attention to the feelings, hunches, and intuitions that flood your life each day. If you do, you will see that premonitions are not rare, but a natural part of our lives.” Larry Dossey

HOBBIES FOR DIFFERENT PERSONALITY TYPES
MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On April 12, 1861, the bloodiest four years in American history begin when Confederate shore batteries under Gen. P.G.T. Beauregard open fire on Union-held Fort Sumter in South Carolina’s Charleston Bay. Four years later, the Confederacy was defeated at a cost of 620,000 Union and Confederate soldiers dead.
Athletes can pursue a host of potential hobbies or activities that will foster their love of sports. Men and women who still have a hop in their step can sign up to compete in adult sports leagues. Depending on the sport, leagues might be available to adults of various ages and skill levels, and some may even be more focused on fun than competition. For athletes who can no longer lace up their cleats, coaching youth sports or volunteering to coach at a nearby school provides a chance to stay involved even if competing is no longer possible.
PREVENT CO POISONING (NAPSI)—Each year, more than 400 people die from unintentional carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning and more than 20,000 visit the emergency room. CO poisoning can be prevented with a few precautions: What To Do • Never use portable electric generators, charcoal grills or other similar devices inside your home, garage or in any confined area that can let carbon monoxide collect. • Have your chimney, fireplace and woodstoves inspected before every heating season. • Turn off space heaters before leaving a room or going to sleep. • Never run your car engine for more than a few moments in a garage, even if the door to the outside is open. Fumes can build up quickly and can spread to the living area of your home. • Look for clues that home appliances may be malfunctioning. Common indicators include decreased hot water supply, soot on appliances, moisture inside windows, and furnaces not heating properly. • Install at least one carbon monoxide detector, connected to a monitoring center that operates 24/7, on every level of your home. Real protection comes from ADT—keeping your family safe from poisonous CO gas that can cause dizziness, unconsciousness and possibly death if undetected. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

S E V RA Thanks, Brad! I would like to thank Brad at the Geneseo post office who took many minutes from his day to un-jam a piece of paper from the copier that really was not in the copier. In addition to getting the copier to realize there was no paper jam, Brad finished my copying for me! Thanks so much. Ridge Road Easter Bunny Thank you! Seeing you driving down Ridge, beeping and waving to everyone, was so awesome. My kids were beside themselves thinking you were on your way to them soon! I don’t know where you were headed all dressed up, or if you were just trying to spread joy, but either way, it worked. The smile on the face of the driver of the vehicle proves to me already that you ladies know the joy you spread ! Good tip! Thank you so much to everyonewho makes it a point to hand out a good tip. It means so much to me when I get a generous $10 from a single diner whose bill is around the same. Too often people are not generous, so when they are it really, really makes my day! Thank you!
Excess Road Salt On 4/1/21, there was a thick layer of salt all over the entire road. Why? There was no snow or ice on the road and no need for added salt. This was a total waste. Is some company dumping leftover salt so they can increase their order for next season? Why are tax dollars being wasted on salt that is not needed on a state road? No Disgusting Language Thanks to the person who spoke out. While we have free speech, it was wrong to force people driving by to see the profanity on this sign and on other signs using similar vulgarity. Hunter Apology In response to “Hunter entitlement:” I am sorry for going onto someone else’s land. I did have permission to hunt on the land I was on. I was tracking a deer and did ask permission from one other property owner. I didn’t realize where the property line was when tracking an injured deer. I shouldn’t have gone as far as I did. I should have definitely taken down the ribbons marking my trail; I thought I had. I am an older hunter and do respect other people’s property. Hunting is a sport I take seriously and have for many years. It is not an entitlement. I am truly sorry, and I apologize again!
Thanks for lunch! My husband and I want to thank the young lady (US ARMY Plate cover) on 4/01/2021 at Arby's in Henrietta for paying for our lunch! It's wonderful to know we still have thoughtful people in this world. We paid the favor forward to the people behind us! Again, thank you, and thank you for your service! Bless you!

THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB Commute: Bending over backwards simply to get to work and then get home from work can have an incredibly negative impact on your life. A study from the Office of National Statistics in the United Kingdom found that commuters, especially those who spend between 60 and 90 minutes commuting to work, have lower life satisfaction and lower levels of happiness compared to people who don’t commute. Before accepting a job offer, estimate your commute time to and from the new office and try to determine the impact of that commute on your quality of life.

WORKING PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE Look for ways to be more efficient. Interactions with coworkers can make work more enjoyable, but working parents should not spend too much time shooting the breeze with their fellow employees. Doing so wastes time and only contributes to work-related stress. Commuters who don’t drive themselves to work can be more efficient by using their commutes to read emails, arrange meetings or catch up on projects. Doing so allows for more time to get work done while in the office, which can make it easier to go home on time.
Do You Love To Clean? Come join our team! • DAYS, M-F 7:30am - 4pm • FT & PT • With performance & attendance rewards can earn over $500/wk. • Paid vacation/holidays provided w/required time in service. • Must be at least 21, have own car & be able to pass drug, background and driving record screening.

JOBS FOR STUDENTS PROFICIENT IN MATH Engineer: Mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering and civil engineer go hand-in-hand with math. Engineers in various fields perform a host of tasks, including designing equipment and evaluating the adaptability of materials.
CHALLENGES OF GOING REMOTE WITH YOUR BUSINESS CUSTOMER SERVICE: Ensuring customers can seamlessly connect with your business, and your customer service staff in particular, should be a priority when switching to a remote work setting. Remote customer service employees won’t have the direct access to management and fellow team members that they had when working on-site, so business owners can employ central management platforms that make it easy to access information regarding new products and services and previous interactions with and responses to customers. That access can help solve issues while reducing the likelihood of substantial lag time as customer service employees wait to hear from coworkers and managers about how to respond to certain issues.
