Candidate for Canadice Town Board

Turn all your unwanted GOLD, SILVER, COINS, WATCHES, SCRAP GOLD, POCKET WATCHES, DIAMONDS, STERLING FLATWARE and COSTUME JEWELRY into

I would like to introduce myself as the newest Town Board member and to ask for your support at the upcoming Republican Caucus. The caucus is June 22, 7:00pm; at the Canadice Highway Facility on County Rd 37. I have served on the Board since November when Mark Malmendier announced his departure from the board after serving the Town for many years in various capacities. Growing up in Farmington I served on the Agricultural Committee assisting in drafting and codifying the Town’s Right to Farm Life Law. While living in Victor I served on the Conservation Board 10 years as board member and as Chair. I’m a relatively new resident in Canadice, living here since 2005, and am a member of the Honeoye Valley Association; I served briefly as a Planning Board member before moving to the Town Board. Small, rural towns like Canadice require balance between affordability, keeping reasonable tax rates, and maintaining and developing infrastructure that residents desire. I bring demonstrated financial stewardship from my role at University of Rochester as IT Finance Director for 10+ years. I look forward to the anticipated work with town representatives to update the Comprehensive Plan and to ensure that Canadice budgets and operations are well managed. I also look forward to meeting and hearing from Town constituents as we return to “normal activities.” Feel free to reach out to me if you have questions or comments and again, I welcome your support. 585-944-6979 AVOID ACHES AND PAINS WHEN GARDENING Take frequent breaks. Frequent breaks can help combat the stiffness and muscle aches that may not appear until gardeners finish their gardening sessions. Breaks help to alleviate muscles or joints that can become overtaxed when gardening for long, uninterrupted periods of time. When leaning down or working on your hands and knees, stand up to take breaks every 20 minutes or the moment aches and pains start to make their presence felt.

Commercial Lab Tests vs Genetic Counseling

Our Office Offers: • Wisdom Teeth Extractions • Implants • Sedation Available • Financing Options • Laser Dentistry

---

• Covid 19 Safety Guidlines Followed Here!

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a daughter (almost 31 years) who is concerned about Charcot-MarieTooth syndrome. Her maternal grandmother has been diagnosed with that condition. She is interested in seeking out a genetic test for the condition to learn if she is susceptible. She was referred to a commercial, direct-to-consumer laboratory for the test. How likely is it that a lab test for this specific condition would be accurate? Should she be doing all of this through either a particular type of genetics counselor or her private physician (internist) rather than an independent effort? -- R.C. ANSWER: Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease is the eponym given to a family of hereditary motor sensory neuropathies: diseases that affect the nerves that carry the impulses necessary for movement and sensation. The initial symptoms are most commonly weakness and atrophy in the feet, followed by similar problems in the hands and sensory changes. The diagnosis may be made by EMG testing (electromyography, a needle study of the electrical activity of the muscles), but genetic testing is another way of making the diagnosis. If her grandmother has a known mutation, then genetic testing is likely to give her confirmation of her own status. Commercial genetic testing is certainly available, and probably accurate. However, I would still recommend a visit to a genetic counselor. This may require a referral from her primary-care doctor. The correct test to order, and its interpretation, depends on the exact diagnosis of her grandmother’s condition, since there are many genetic variations of Charcot-Marie-Tooth. It is likely that your daughter will have questions after the test results, and the benefit of having an experienced clinician there to answer them would be invaluable.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I love my two fluffy cats, “Jake” and “Manny,” even though I am allergic to the dander in their fur. Antihistamines help, but not completely. Would an air purifier help keep the air clear? -Jemma G. in Kansas City, Missouri DEAR JEMMA: An allergy to pet dander can be tough to keep under control -- so much so that some pet owners give up their pets. I’m so glad you’ve kept your family together. Pet dander is generally underneath a dog or cat’s coat, near the skin. They shed fluffy bits of fur almost constantly, and dander is carried off with that fluff. Because dander can be tiny -- 75 microns or smaller, which isn’t visible to the naked eye -- it’s hard to isolate and get rid of. An air purifier may help, but only if it’s the right one to trap dander. Get an air purifier with a HEPA filter -- one that can be changed easily. HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filters trap particles as small as 0.5 microns. Avoid “ionizing” air purifiers as these don’t trap as many dander particles; plus they can be expensive. The size depends on how much of your home you’d like the air purifier to work in; for example, desktop-sized units have a range of less than 200 square feet, which makes them ideal for desks or next to your bed. No single strategy will reduce dander or other allergens. Tackle the issue from multiple angles. Dusting and vacuuming the house frequently can reduce dander, and brushing your cats’ hair daily will reduce extra shedding. If these activities trigger allergies, consider wearing a filter mask and goggles to hopefully reduce the reaction.

Hi! My name is , (or Pooder or Love Muppet, that’s ok, I answer to all of them!) I had nowhere to live and then was shipped to my hooman from Arizona and I got here on Sbowl Sunday during a blizzard! What’s this word you say snow? I’m a Komondor and if I weren’t hanging around my moms on the couch I would be protecting a herd of sheep in Hungary where they think I’m a national treasure! In 6 years I’ll have loooong dreadlocks and look like a mop! Hooray!

Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

NOW HERE’S A TIP How to pack a suitcase: Roll pants and tops, adding to suitcase first, toward the handle side. Then add heavy items (shoes, boots) toward the wheel end. Make sure you choose the right size case for the trip; too much room will cause items to shift around.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Fighting Back Against Rising Food Prices This week I scored a grocery discount of $5.21, plus over $6 in free groceries by using the store coupons. Added to that was $12 in free items I took to the local food bank. All of this is because I signed up for another grocery store’s customer loyalty card. It took a few weeks, but eventually the store’s computer figured out my favorite brands and items I routinely purchased, and turned those into discount coupons. It included free items to get me to sample different brands. And then there’s the food bank donation. It feels good, when you’re only a short step from needing that service yourself, to be able to give to those who have even less. The free items offered by the grocery store coupons can help beef up the supplies they have at the food bank, and in some cases might even be treats for those who can’t afford them. I thought about that when I grabbed the mega oversize candy bar offered with a free coupon: Somebody’s kids might not have had sweets in a very long time. And then there are our own pantries. For so long stores couldn’t get certain items. Once those were in stock again, some of us grabbed several extra, just in case. Now some of those items are once again not in stock, but for the most part they are. And now we have extra in our kitchen cabinets. It’s time to look at expiration dates and consider the reality: Will we really use up four boxes of pasta in the next month before they expire? If not, perhaps they could be donated to the food bank. If grocery prices are going to keep rising and rising, this is one way to fight back. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Ursula M. “Connie” Bow July 5,2020

Bradley R. Bennett May 31, 2021 Honeoye Falls: Bradley “Brad” Bennett, passed away peacefully on May 31st, 2021 at the age of 61. He was surrounded with much love from his wife, Karen and sister, Brenda. Born in Lubbock, TX to the late Roger & Sylvia “Janet” Bennett, Brad grew up in Honeoye, NY and graduated from Honeoye Central in 1978. He had a long and fulfilling career in the tire industry, managing retail operations, then heading up major wholesale divisions – where he was well-respected and knowledgeable in his field. Fifteen of those years were spent working for (now retired owners) the Miller Bros. of W. Glenn Sedam, Inc. of Perry, NY. He had lifelong friendships with former employers, co-workers, customers and industry contacts alike. An avid sports fan, Brad enjoyed dirt track racing, the Rochester Red Wings, the Buffalo Bills and Syracuse basketball. Vacations were always better when it included stops in Cooperstown for the Baseball Hall of Fame and a chance to soak in the atmosphere there. He was in his glory when attending baseball games. In late April, battling cirrhosis, renal failure, Parkinson’s Disease and complications with diabetes, Brad made the brave decision to go home and into hospice care. With Karen at his side, he spent his final weeks focusing on his quality of life in comfortable surroundings with dignity, compassion and love from those around him. Having cared for his ailing parents in previous years, his own health issues and recent Covid events meant that Brad and Karen had an exceptionally long engagement. He made a special request asking if they could be wed before he passed away, and with the help of hospice staff, Brad and Karen were married in a beautiful ceremony in their home. It was a joyous day where love was celebrated, and illness took a back seat for once. The final weeks with Brad were a gift – filled with love, laughter, gratitude and tenderness. A special reunion with his brother Dave, his sister-in-law, Karen, and sister Brenda proved to be very memorable. All three siblings came together to reminisce and show their love and appreciation for each other one last time. Brad is survived by his wife & best friend, Karen; sister, Brenda (Paul) Heilman of Shortsville, brother, David (Karen) Bennett of Heber Springs, Arkansas. Children: Heather (Dan) Clark, Kellie ( John) Fowler, Nicole (Rich) Gardner, Emily ( Jamie) Duffield and Christopher (Felicia Huang) Billing. Brad was “Papa” to 9 grandchildren, Joseph, Chloe, Kyle, Caleb, Brodie, Mallory, Danielle, Olivia and Robin, and 1 great-grandchild, Carter. A private memorial will be held at a later date. Interment will also be held privately at Lakeview Cemetery in Honeoye, NY. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a memorial contribution in Brad’s name to: UR Medicine Hospice, 2180 Empire Blvd, Webster, NY 14580. DID YOU KNOW? Once a term that dominated newspaper headlines and environmental discourse, “global warming” is now heard far less frequently. Many may assume global warming has been rebranded as “climate change,” but the two are not one and the same. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, global warming refers exclusively to the Earth’s rising surface temperature, while climate change includes global warming but also its side effects. Such side effects include the melting of the world’s glaciers and the growing frequency of drought and heavier rainstorms. Global warming is also used most often to refer to warming caused by humans, while climate change is a term used when discussing environmental changes that are human-caused or natural. Celebrate National Dairy Month with Monroe County Dairy Princess Abby Rouland! BY KIM ROULAND, Edited

J

une is National Dairy Month! Dairy farmers across New York work hard each and every day to bring dairy foods to your table. They care for their cows, are stewards of the land and natural resources, and take great pride in bringing milk, cheese, and other real milk favorites to supermarket shelves. Seventeen-year-old Abby Rouland is proud to be the 2021-2022 Monroe County Dairy Princess. What is a Dairy Princess? According to the American Dairy Association, Dairy Princesses “represent New York’s dairy farmers and serve as dairy industry ambassadors throughout the next year.” How does one become a Dairy Princess? It’s harder than you think! To become the year’s Dairy Princess, prospective princesses must meet certain requirements such as having a connection to the dairy industry, being between 15-24 years of age and unmarried with no children, compete in a pageant with judges, answer impromptu questions, give a speech, pass a product knowledge exam, and more. To this, they must still add communication skills, knowledge of the dairy industry, poise, and personality. The Dairy Princess program is made possible through the support of the American Dairy Association North East, The Local Planning and Management Association funded by Dairy Farmers Check Off Dollars. “It is an really honor to represent our dairy farmers,” said Abby Rouland. “They are essential to everyday life. They keep people nourished, provide for their animals in innovative ways, continue to preserve the land, and more. That is the message I enjoy communicating to consumers.” Abby Rouland has been in dairy promotion for seven years, owns her own herd of cattle, and shows her cows at the local, state and national level. “My sister started when she was little, and I have been following in her footsteps!” shared Abby. She is also a member of the Junior Dairy Leaders, 4-H, the New York Junior Holstein Association, the New York Ayrshire Club, and the Guernsey Breeders Association. Being a Dairy Princess also comes with several responsibilities. “We inform our communities about dairy farming, cow comfort, and environmental stewardship as well as the nutritional benefits of milk and milk products,” explained Abby. “We participate in school programs, Refuel events at which we hand out chocolate milk after games and races, farmer meetings, consumer outreach, and public relations. This helps us bridge the gap between dairy farmers and consumers.” Here is a recipe from your 2021-2022 Monroe County Dairy Princess, Abby Rouland, provided by American Dairy Association North East for savory rolls filled with nutritional dairy goodness. “Your Milk Comes from a Good Place.” Continue to support your local dairy farmers by enjoying a glass of cold milk with your meals and include delicious milk products in your favorite recipes. This message is brought to you by American Dairy Association North East and your local dairy farmers.

TRIPLE CHEESE VEGGIE ROLLS Makes 12 rolls Prep Time: 20 min. // Cook Time: 3 min. // Bake Time: 15 min.

Ingredients: • Nonstick cooking spray • 1 (13.8 ounce) tube refrigerated pizza dough • 3/4 cup shredded Cheddar cheese • 1 cup Mozzarella cheese • 3/4 cup chopped bell pepper • 3/4 cup shredded Colby Jack cheese • 2 green onions, sliced • 6 large eggs • 1/3 cup sliced black olives • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1/4 teaspoon ground pepper • Flour as needed

Instructions: 1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Spray a standard 12-cup muffin tin with nonstick cooking spray; set aside. 2. Combine the cheeses in a large bowl; set aside. Whisk eggs with the salt and pepper in a medium bowl. Spray a medium nonstick skillet with cooking spray. Pour the eggs into the skillet and cook over medium-low heat, stirring frequently until firm but still creamy, 3-5 minutes. 3. Roll out the dough on a floured surface to a 8”x12” rectangle, about 1/8” thick. Scatter the cheeses evenly over the surface of the dough, leaving 1/2” border around all edges. Spread the scrambled eggs evenly on top of the cheese. Scatter the bell pepper, green onions, and black olives over the eggs. 4. Roll up the dough very tightly from one long side. Brush water along the edge of the dough and pinch tightly to seal. Using a sharp serrated knife, cut the roll into 12 pieces, about an inch wide. Place the pieces, cut side up, in the prepared muffin cups. 5. Bake for 15-18 minutes, or until the dough is golden brown. Cool the rolls in the pan on a wire rack for 5 minutes. Remove from the pan and cool on a rack for 5 minutes more before serving. Enjoy this article? S E V RA Thank you! We want to give a huge Thank You to the gentleman who paid for our meals at Jo Andy’s on May 25th. We sincerely appreciate your kindness and will do likewise in the near future. May God bless you for your generosity! What a trip! Last Wednesday evening, I was taking my dog for a walk near my home in Corfu. My dog suddenly pulled me, and I tripped over him to avoid stepping on him. I fell off the curb and into the street, severely breaking both my wrist and elbow. A very kind neighbor, who happened to be a nurse, was driving and saw me fall. She stopped, and after assessing the situation, called 911. Before I knew what was happening, more neighbors were there to help as well as the police and ambulance. Someone even took my dog home for me! It’s all pretty much a blur to me, but thank you so very much to all who came to my rescue!

Not a single thank you In response to a recent person looking for incontinence underwear: I did the best I could with what I no longer needed, and I dropped off perhaps a dozen packages to the site specified by the requester in phone calls, after driving dozens of miles in each direction. Later I called the intermediary who had actually posted the request to confirm that the person in need had received the items. Several calls and emails went out without a word in reply. I particularly urged several times that the ultimate recipient make sure they looked through all the open packages. Why? Because in one of the open packages I left an envelope inside with a $100 bill in it so the ultimate recipient could purchase more underwear. No answers at all. Not a single thank you. What to do? I live in a seniors apartment complex. We have a nosy, busybody who, if she hears something good or bad (but mostly the bad) can’t wait to spread it all over. That wouldn’t be so bad, but most of the time, what she is spreading is not true. She is just a mean and disgusting old biddy. What can be done with someone like this? Debt If you include the unfunded liabilities of medicare and social security, our national debt is over $100 trillion. How bad does it have to get before you agree social security, medicare, and medicaid (the biggest debt drivers) need to go away? Not cut, completely go away. Stop calling it “my social security.” It was never yours to begin with. Your grandparents survived just fine before Medicare/Medicaid. Nowhere in the Declaration of Independence nor the Constitution does it guarantee any standard of living or any length of life. Raising prices! I understand that prices are going up at pretty much every restaurant you go to due to the economy, but can these restaurants please update their websites and let people know about the increase! I ordered a pizza special from a local place. It said one price online, but when I picked it up it was actually $10 more! I’m all about helping out our local businesses, but I wasn’t happy about paying so much more than I thought. I probably would have gone somewhere else had I known.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Sigurd the Mighty, a ninth-century Norse earl of Orkney, was killed by an enemy he had beheaded several hours earlier. He’d tied the man’s head to his horse’s saddle, but while riding home one of its protruding teeth grazed his leg, causing an infection from which the unlucky Sigurd died.
