The Purina Pet Care Center found that overweight pets may live two years less than ideal weight pets. Reduced life span is not the only problem, as carrying extra pounds can contribute to various maladies. These include osteoarthritis and poor joint health, type 2 diabetes, ligament injuries, heart and respiratory disease, kidney disease, and cancer.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Pulmonary Fibrosis Needs Exact Diagnosis --DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband was recently diagnosed with mild to moderate pulmonary fibrosis. His mother died from pulmonary fibrosis. From what we have read there is no cure, only palliative care. The thought of doing nothing to try to stop the progression is totally unacceptable when there have been such successes with immunotherapy and stem cells. Would he receive more aggressive treatment going to a pulmonary fibrosis care center that has lung disease programs? -- C.D. ANSWER: There are several diseases that may cause fibrosis of the lung, so having an exact diagnosis made by an expert is critical for getting the right treatment. The most common type of pulmonary fibrosis is called “idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis” (it also has been called “usual interstitial pneumonia” and “cryptogenic fibrosing alveolitis”), and I am going to discuss that diagnosis. The cause of IPF is unknown (both “idiopathic” and “cryptogenic” mean “of unknown cause”), but cigarette smoking is a risk factor. It is usually diagnosed in people who are their 50s and 60s, although some familial cases may come on earlier. IPF can run in families. Although it is a rare disease, it seems to be on the rise. The major symptoms are cough and shortness of breath. There is no cure for IPF, but there are treatments available. Two drugs, pirfenidone and nintedanib, are approved for use in the U.S. and Canada. Both of them slow progression of lung disease, reduce exacerbations and have been proven to reduce mortality from the condition, if only slightly. I am concerned that you and your husband apparently haven’t heard of these drugs. I strongly advise you get a referral to a center for lung disease in order to get your husband the best care. I found 35 IPF trials recruiting patients in the U.S. and six in Canada. A clinical trial will help scientists understand this condition as well as determine the best current treatment. You also can find out what centers have expertise on this condition by seeing where the trials are conducted at www.clinicaltrials.gov. The most aggressive treatment isn’t always the best, but you and your husband deserve to hear about all the options. The Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation can help you find experienced centers for treating this condition. You can find them online at www.pulmonaryfibrosis.org. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My niece recently was diagnosed with breast cancer. Radiation was recommended. Her mother said that first she’d have to boost her immune system. Is it possible to actually do that? -- P.P.L. ANSWER: Radiation is a common treatment after breast cancer surgery. It’s done to reduce the risk of recurrence, depending on the exact type of cancer. Boosting the immune system is a new adjunct for many types of cancer. There are several ways to do this: One is to genetically modify the patient’s own immune T-cells, but many other techniques are in trials now. However, if your niece’s mother is talking about supplements, I’d be cautious. Supplements that are promoted to boost the immune system generally are ineffective at doing so. Making sure your niece has proper nutrition, gets good sleep and experiences as little stress as is manageable are ways to prevent stress on the immune system. Everyone could benefit from those deceptively simple steps, but especially a person being treated for cancer. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. HOW TO SUPPORT BUSINESSES DURING MANDATORY RESTRICTIONS ORDER DELIVERY: It’s still possible to enjoy foods from your favorite local restaurants. Many restaurants that had not previously done so have begun to offer delivery services, be it curbside or at-home, and this can provide a great respite for families who have had to cook three meals a day at home for their entire families for extended periods of time. Curbside delivery has made it possible to get takeout meals without compromising social distancing recommendations.

PAW'S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Keyboard-Loving Cat Sees Computer as Rival DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Whenever I’m videoconferencing from home, my cat insists on jumping into my lap and pawing at the screen and the keyboard. If I put him outside the room, he will meow loudly and nonstop until I let him back in. Once the call is finished, he quiets down and goes away. To my co-workers, this is just a funny distraction, but I worry that it will have a negative impression on clients. How can I calm him down? -Melanie in Pittsburgh DEAR MELANIE: This is a tough one that many cat owners have faced. And now that so many of us are exclusively working from home, it’s going to continue -- unless you take some proactive steps. Cats jump onto your keyboard because they know it gets your attention. They’re not trying to figure out how to write social media posts. They just want you to pay as much attention to them as you do to the laptop screen. And locking a cat out of the room can trigger separation anxiety or just plain frustration that they can’t get in to be with you. Try this: Before a video call, give your cat 10 to 20 minutes of undivided attention. Pet him, play with his favorite toys, scratch his belly. This may help stop or reduce the number of times he jumps into your lap. Use positive reinforcement to teach your cat to do more of what you want and less of the things you don’t want him to do. To learn more about this training method, go to napahumane.org and search for “cats, positive reinforcement training.” Its basic premise is to reward your cat when he does something right. NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson

ACCLIMATING TO A NEW NEIGHBORHOOD

* A tip from our good friend A.S.M.: “When buying berries packed in a basket, check the bottom to see if there’s a juice stain. This means that the strawberries at the bottom are crushed.”

Scout out the neighborhood Use mobile phone apps to see where the locals tend to congregate and plan trips to these restaurants and other shops. Over time, you probably will start to see some familiar faces. Drive around town and get a feel for side streets instead of the main thoroughfares. It’s often off the beaten path where you happen upon the greatest finds.

* “Here’s a great tip for use at bath time with baby: I have a sippy cup that changes color when the drink is hot. Oddly enough, it changes at the perfect temperature for baby’s bath. So, I fill the tub and toss in the cup. When the cup starts to change back to its original color (blue), I know the bathwater is not too hot. I always swish the water around and check with my wrist also, but it is a good visual clue to check.” -- P.B. in Idaho

Accepting Application for Studio, 1 & 2 Bedroom Apartments Must be 55 yrs. or older

* “To remove muffins or rolls from a pan, set it on an old, damp towel for a minute. The steam must loosen the bottoms because they just slide right out. I thank my mom for this tip.” -J.R. via e-mail * When heating milk in a pan, “seal” the pan with unsalted butter to keep the milk from filming and sticking to the sides. Lightly coat all sides of the pan with butter, and the milk is sure to not leave scum, which can take away from the rich flavor of the milk. * Do you find yourself throwing away unused and spoiled fruits and veggies at the end of the week? Try setting aside time after you come home from the grocery store for prepping fruits and vegetables. Pre-bag snack sizes of carrots, celery, strawberries, grapes, cantaloupe and apples. Pre-cut veggies for meals to make later in the week. Slice tomatoes and onions for sandwiches, and tear and separate lettuce for salads. They all make great, healthy treats, and having them ready to go makes it easier to get that five a day!

Every day is a new beginning. Take a deep breath, smile & start again. TOBY LOVES WAG-N-WASH Our long-haired German Shepherd is in love with the staff at Wag-N-Wash in Livonia. Tami and her team do a terrific job every time on “man’s best friend” and quickly too! This last time, Toby brought with him a little ‘ode de skunk’ perfume that they eradicated completely. Thanks!

mom and dad’s cottage. They acted quickly and decisively to pull him out of the water before calling 911 because my dear friend knew she had to get him out of the water. With help from her son-in-law and others, they brought him back to life and saved my son. We never know when we will witness the hand of God, but He is and was in Honeoye that day and worked a miracle through my friends. Praise God Almighty!

TO THE KIND GENTLEMAN AT THE DEC As I was frantically looking for my pups who took off when I dropped their leash, you stopped to assure me you had not seen them near

HEROES The names of those involved are not important. They know who they are. They are my neighbors and friends I have known a long time. Last week, they were my heroes. My son, Troy, was found THANK YOU FOR face down, not breathing, and YOUR KINDNESS blue in the lake in front of my I want to thank the two ladies

INEFFICIENCY I am 39 years old. I have grown up around dogs, and my dad used to adopt from (local shelter) years ago. (Local shelter) now forces you to make an appointment to even enter the building. I saw two dogs on their website that I wanted to look at, so I made an appointment that put me a week out. By the day of the appointment, the two dogs I was interested in were already adopted. The whole point of making the appointment was to view these dogs. What a completely inefficient way of conducting your operations, and don’t you dare blame it on coronavirus. I don’t appreciate having my time wasted. Am I left to assume I have to make an appointment and hope there happens to be a dog I want at that moment, or else I’m out of luck? You are making adoptions more difficult than they have to be!

ABUSING HOTELS AND MOTELS I manage a hotel in (local town) and want to vent about unacceptable behavior I’ve observed over the last 7 years. Local people, almost exclusively from (local city), will reserve a room by pooling money amongst 6-10 friends to afford the room. Once in the hotel, they play loud music, smoke, come in & out throughout the night, have parties, making excessive noise. They bring many non-guests to the swimming pool, and we’ve needed to shut down our pool on several occasions because of poor water quality. They have absolutely no consideration for our other valued guests. Here’s a suggestion to those trashing our hotels: stay at one of your friends’ houses, smoke, drink and make as much noise as you want. Don’t do it in a hotel!

IN RESPONSE TO NOSY NEIGHBOR Upon reading the post, I don’t feel that the person was nosy or spying. You also stated that the person makes the rules on his property. Well, in the times we live in, I think, in some ways, that is changing. As the Governor stated long ago, no one has the right to make anyone else sick with corona virus. They are enforcing wearing a mask, if you haven’t noticed, also social distancing. I would be disturbed if I saw neighbors, whomever, blatantly disobeying common sense things, such as social distancing, and the wearing of masks. That does not make a person nosy, just alert to what is going on in their surroundings. Disobeying such things as having a large group over your house, without social distancing, nor masks, can potentially be life threatening to the rest of us.

that came to my aid after I fell in the parking lot of McDonalds in Dansville on August 5th. They were so kind, helpful and attentive. They got the store employee, blocked incoming traffic until the police and ambulance arrived. When I was placed into the ambulance, my husband went to get their names, and they were already gone. But I will never forget their kindness. As I now recover from a fractured hip and sprained wrist, thinking of them makes me

MUSIC This is for “Turn down your music”. You really can’t complain much since it was during day. If it bothered you so much you should have gone over to ask them to turn it down in a nice way. And you have to consider that these days music may help a person deal with all that is going on. I know it does me at times. Also, that person may have a hearing loss you don’t know about. As for taste of music being different, everyone has a different taste of music they like. You can’t change that. That’s for sure. If it goes on into the night, then call the police.

Charles A. “Chuck” Dengler August 10, 2020

Because We Care

Prattsburgh: Charles A. “Chuck” Dengler, age 70, passed away on Monday, August 10th, 2020 at Arnot Ogdon Hospital in Elmira. Chuck was born on September 2nd, 1949 in Rochester, NY to the late Elmer & Helen (Bender) Dengler. Chuck was the Sales Manager for many Rochester dealerships for 35 years; he loved being outdoors, mowing the lawn, and watching the stars. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing & bowled in his younger years. Chuck enjoyed life and could be found having a beer and enjoying a cigar; however, he loved nothing more than spending time with his daughters, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. Chuck is survived by his loving and devoted wife of over 51 years, Doreen (Newcome) Dengler; his children: Amy (Scott) Hamilton, Christine (Doug) Dengler & Jennifer (Dave) Bates; his grandchildren: Alex, Casey (Ashley), Tommy, Mason, & Austin; his great-grandchildren: Remi, Colton, Ziah, & Oakley; his sisters: Rosemary Plane & Ellen (Tom) Graves; and many nieces, nephews, cousins & friends. In addition to his parents, Chuck is predeceased by his brothers: Wayne & Dwight Dengler. The family is planning a Celebration of Life in the near future. STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Realizing that surgical antiseptics were marketable to just a small group of professionals, the makers of Listerine began to market the product as a floor cleaner -- as well as a cure for gonorrhea. While we won’t necessarily vouch for the latter, in a pinch, just add a capful for every gallon of water and mop away. Other uses include dandruff elimination, deodorant, a numbing agent for toothache pain and tick removal.

LET’S PLAN TO TALK According to the fifth National Funeral Directors Association’s annual Consumer Awareness and Preferences Study in a row, consumers acknowledge the importance of preplanning their own funeral, but fail to follow up on the notion. While 62.5 percent of consumers felt that it was very important to communicate their funeral plans and wishes to family members, prior to their own death, only 21.4 percent had done so. There were several factors that consumers cited as preventing them from planning, including: preplanning is not a priority; that they have not thought about it; or that prepaying is too costly. In order to overcome these self-imposed obstacles to preplanning and get accurate information, all are encouraged to engage us in a personal conversation. By planning a funeral service in advance you can design and specify the exact type of service you’d like. By letting your family know how you’d like your funeral or memorial service to be, they’ll have fewer decisions to make during a difficult emotional time. Taking the time now to arrange your funeral is one less thing your loved ones will have to worry about once you’ve passed. To learn more about pre-planning, call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. We welcome you to tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. Wild Wings Educates on Wildlife at Mendon Ponds Nature Center By Amanda Dudek

M

any Greater Rochester area residents have likely heard of Wild Wings, a not-for-profit educational wildlife organization. However, many are not aware of what they do, how they are funded and the crucial role they play for area wildlife. Jessica Kozakiewicz, a Wild Wings volunteer with over 10 years of experience, fills readers in on the organization’s mission, challenges, new happenings and more. Wild Wings is not a wildlife rehabilitator, but rather, they give animals a home after rehabilitation. “We provide a home for animals which have already been rehabilitated and have been deemed non-releasable,” said Kozakiewicz. Wild Wings primarily cares for injured birds of prey which are unable to survive on their own in the wild such as eagles, hawks, falcons, vultures, and owls. “Any animal that is non-releasable is typically euthanized,” she explained. “Rather than let that happen, we give them a permanent home, and they partner with us for education.” In fact, Wild Wings’ mission is to “teach environmental stewardship through programs featuring [its] resident raptors as [its] teaching partners.” Volunteers, trainers and handlers travel with some of these birds of prey to present at schools and events. Kozakiewicz participates in training, handling and educational programs which now have another facility from which to serve the community: the Mendon Ponds Nature Center within Mendon Ponds Park. Wild Wings, currently houses and cares for 34 permanently injured non-releasable birds of prey. “These birds are of various species, both native and non-native to New York State,” shared Kozakiewicz. “We now

house injured songbirds in our new aviary, providing visitors with a new educational experience. We have also had a bobcat for the last several years.” “We just took in two new fox kits, which is new for us at Wild Wings,” shared Kozakiewicz. “We plan to have a good variety of reptiles that you would see in the park, such as a number of snakes, turtles, frogs, toads and fish species.” Wild Wings hosts educational programs and hikes, as well, where visitors can learn about animals and the environment, although things have been difficult in 2020. “COVID has certainly been challenging,” Kozakiewicz acknowledged. “It closed our facility down, and we weren’t able to have the public come through. We are also on a lease agreement for the Nature Center, and while many people believe we are funded through Monroe County or other government agencies, we are not. We are funded entirely by donations with some help from the fees of our educational programs. We had to cancel some of our larger fundraising events and lost several fundraising opportunities.” Kozakiewicz believes Wild Wings and the impact it has had and continues to have on wildlife education and conservation is too important to let fall by the wayside. “At Wild Wings, people get to see the world as they haven’t before,” she explained. “They get to know our resident birds and other animals. When people leave us, they can identify birds on these park trails and realize why some of them are helpful to humans. They

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

want to protect these species in the wild, preserving them in the natural world.” It appears to be working. “One of the best examples of human wildlife conservation is what has happened with our local bald eagle population,” shared Kozakiewicz. “They were almost completely extinct, in large part due to the use of the pesticide, DDT. The bald eagle populations were very low, and people realized this was a threat. They joined together, stopped widespread use of DDT, and encouraged numbers to grow. Today, there are bald eagle populations on Lake Ontario and every single Finger Lake.” It is imperative, then, that Wild Wings continues providing for these birds in need as well as for its education programs which help people appreciate them. “We are looking at different ways to be able to offer more private, individualized group settings for now,” said Kozakiewicz. “The nature center is one of our biggest expansions yet, and we are working hard to be able to offer it this fall. We plan to talk about the different trails in the park, its ecology, and which species are found within the park. Also, we are always very open to things visitors would like to see and learn about with regards to the animals we care Jessica Kozakiewicz with Kisonsen for.” “It has always been so inspiring to me to work up close with these amazing animals,” Kozakiewicz added on a more personal note. “I feel such a sense of pride that I get to share this knowledge with all our visitors, to help them to see something new and inspiring in the world around them, as well.” Like many not-for-profit organizations, however, the future of Wild Wings, its educational efforts, and the magnificent birds they care for will depend in many ways on the support of those who share its love for these incredible birds of prey, songbirds and other wildlife. “We are almost completely supported by the generosity of public donations,” affirmed Kozakiewicz. “Our supporters can be assured that, as a primarily volunteer-run organization, funds donated to us are going to our animals and furthering our mission of education, allowing it and us to continue.” “We are a local, grassroots organization built by the community for the community,” said Kozakiewicz. “Those who donate can clearly see the impact of their investment in us.” Enjoy this article? SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles

Getting Through the Day Some random thoughts for getting through the day. Have you heard of custom puzzles? They’re available at a number of places online. (Read the reviews before you order and look for U.S. companies.) Select a favorite vacation or family photo, decide on the size of the puzzle and the number of pieces, send in your order and you’ll get back all the pieces to create a puzzle of that image. Call the company first to be sure of the details. Buy stamps by mail and stay out of the post office. Ask the local post office to have your mail carrier bring out a stamp order form and envelope. Check off the ones you want, write a check payable to Postmaster and slide it into the envelope. Leave it in your outgoing mail and within a few days your stamps will be delivered to you. If you miss playing chess with others, you can play online. See www.chess.com/play/computer and play against the computer. Better yet, play against a pal using an old-school method: set up a board on each end and send your moves to each other via email. On the other hand, too many people are trying to cut their own hair nowadays since too many salons and barber shops are closed. If you think you want to cut your own hair, don’t. If you really insist you need to cut your hair and haven’t done it before, go online to YouTube and watch a few dozen how-to videos about cutting hair. Then rethink your plan again. Whatever you do, don’t use regular kitchen or paper scissors. If you have to do this, invest in proper haircutting shears.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

HOW EVERYDAY CITIZENS CAN PROTECT LOCAL PARKS Leave nothing behind. Memories are not the only things park visitors should take with them when they leave the park. Estimates suggest that as much as 100 million pounds of garbage are generated at California’s Yosemite National Park each year. Significant damage can result if even a tiny fraction of that garbage is left behind. In addition, park officials forced to expend their limited resources on garbage pickup may not have enough resources left to address other issues, further threatening the park. Whether you’re hiking or camping, make sure everything you take into the park comes with you when you leave. If you have trash, make sure it’s deposited into the appropriate receptacles.

585-346-9825 www.starpest.com Help plants survive sizzling summer heat Lay down mulch. Mulch helps insulate and protect soil during summer, when soil can quickly dry out. When applied correctly (ideally before summer temperatures get too hot), mulch helps the soil conserve moisture and prevents weed growth. Weeds can rob soil of the water it needs to promote strong root systems, which can help plants get the nutrients they need to withstand summer heat. Mulched soils also do not experience the fluctuations in temperature that non-mulched soils can experience during summer heat waves, helping plants to grow evenly.

SAFETY IN AND AROUND THE POOL Create barriers. Preventing accidental drowning means removing easy access to pools. Pools should be surrounded by secure fencing with an automatically latching gate. Fences should not be accessible by climbing. Extra precautions like installing a safety cover on inground pools and removing or securing ladders when the pool is not in use can help as well.

festivities. Not only does it add for some fun and color, but will remind your child everyone is there to celebrate them on their special day. Have kids pick a theme; whether it’s silly hats or hair, or their craziest mismatched outfit, inspire a spark of creativity and let kids reveal their looks to one another at the start of their call. It’s sure to guarantee some laughs and serve as a talking point and good distraction.

With social distancing in place, gathering a large group together whether at home or in a public setting for a birthday party isn’t necessarily an option. Have no fear though! With the right ingenuity and the aid of video calling software, those much needed social interactions and birthday celebrations are still viable! While bowling or pizza parties may be off-limits for the time being, teleconferencing can allow families to come together even through the screen. Grandma can log on to join in with singing happy birthday and watch your little one blow out candles, and cousins & friends can watch them open presents while sending virtual cards. Not only does this maintain social distancing protocols, but allows for engagement and serves as a reminder that birthdays can still be fun occasions despite everything going on. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Virtual parties can come with their own RSVPs emailed out ahead of time, and consider bringing in any of those DIY crafts you may have been trying out on your own! While your kids may not be able to hang out with their friends in person, they can still get together to do some crafts, tell some jokes, or bring some levity into staying at home. Friends and relatives can read birthday cards aloud and express birthday wishes all from the safety of their own homes.

Host a virtual karaoke party or girls night-in featuring at-home manicures for teens while they cue up their favorite music and celebrate their birthdays at home but still with friends. Live-streaming a movie together (with the right extensions) can make up for that birthday trip to the theater that got sidelined—plus you can never go wrong with popcorn!

Adults shouldn’t feel left out—hosting a game night or even a couple of hours of conversation through voice call can ease that sense of isolation, and sometimes there’s nothing better than getting the game together to reprise their own rendition of Happy Birthday. Birthday parades with convoys are all the rage right now. Set the stage with a birthday yard sign or banner for the boy or girl of the hour. Call Penny Lane Promotional Products at 585-226-8111 to order yours today!

While our children’s birthdays (and ours!) may be celebrated differently this year, it’s important to highlight how close we all are, no matter the distance between Don’t forget to decorate! Have yourself us. Dig out those party hats and streamers and your guests pull out all their finest and make birthdays memorable ones—for birthday party décor to add to the all the right reasons!
