Gardeners I discovered some strange fungi under a tree in my yard. It has small tan mounds that erupt into long narrow red spearlike structures. Can you tell me anything about it? - Jane The fungus you encountered might be a stinkhorn, as described in this article: http://blogs.ifas.ufl.edu/wakullaco/2019/01/08/the-elegant-stinkhorn-mutinus-elegans/ Without a photo, a definite ID isn’t possible. These fungal structures do not damage plants. Rather, they grow on decaying plant matter. Web search “Stinkhorn” for variations.
from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County I wouldn’t want it in my front garden bed. One person’s milkweed plant probably doesn’t make a difference, but if many people plant it, it could make a difference over time.
Do the milkweed plants in my front perennial bed have any significant impact on monarch butterflies? I am trying to decide if I should keep or remove them. - Joanne Joanne, I understand your angst. The number of monarchs is declining for several reasons, including habitat loss in central Mexico where they over-winter and summer habitat loss in the Midwest. There is a lot of talk about planting milkweed to help them out, but common field milkweed is not a very attractive plant, spreads invasively underground and is difficult to remove.
milkweed in this region including Butterfly Weed (Asclepius Tuberosa), and Swamp Milkweed (Asclepius Incarnata). These two plants are much better suited for home gardens: Common field milkweed (Asclepius they are more attractive and will not Syriaca), serves as both a preferred spread invasively like common milkhost plant (where these butterflies weed. lay their eggs and larva/caterpillars The article from the University of feed) and a nectar source for adults. Vermont at the following link offers That’s why people encourage grow- many details about monarchs and ing this specific plant. However, milkweed. https://pss.uvm.edu/ppp/ Monarchs can use other types of articles/monarch.html

HOROSCOPE
History-making 5K and Fun Run Mark Wood Library’s 2019 Events By Maria Bucci
W
ood Library’s fifth annual 5K, Fun Run and Story Walk generated almost $7,000 for the library’s summer youth programs. 153 runners from as far away as Ohio, Kansas and Florida, as well as from Rochester and the Finger Lakes Region, participated in the event which was held at Canandaigua’s community library on Saturday, July 13, 2019. For the first time in the history of this event, a woman was the top 5K runner and a girl was the top Fun Runner. Melissa JohnsonWhite (Fairport, NY) won the 5K race with a time of 18:53. John Kohl (Camillus, NY) was the top 5K male finisher with a time of 19:52. Elizabeth Couillard (Canandaigua, NY) and Quinn Deutschlander (Canandaigua, NY) were the top female and male finishers in the 1-mile Fun Run. Medals and prizes were presented to the top 5K finishers in each age group. Several of those participating completed their very first 5K race. Library Director Jenny Goodemote of Canandaigua placed first among library employees.
“On your mark, get set, go!”
“We are for tu n ate to have the support of many generous sponsors,” reported Goodemote. “Their financial contributions make this a profitable fundraiser for the library and help us offer dozens of fun and enriching programs for youth during the summer months.” A race-day raffle, music by PADJ, activities for children, and a special Story Walk rounded out the day’s events. Wood Library would like to thank the 2019 race sponsors: BR Orthodontics, Paul and Maggie Bringewatt, Canandaigua Orthopaedic Associates, Canandaigua Rotary Club, Canandaigua Sealcoating, Finger Lakes Dental Care, Five Star Bank, Friends of Wood Library, Geoff Hallstead, Gary and Chris Henehan, Peter and Peggy Kane, Lantek Companies, LOLA Transport, Lyons National Bank, Moore Printing Company, Oasis Acres, Procutters Landscape, Reliant Community Federal Credit

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Dealing with a difficult person can be the kind of challenge you Aries Lambs love. Or it could be an energy-draining exercise in futility. Be certain your goals are worth your efforts. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The Divine Bovine might be seeing red at having your crisis-resolution efforts overlooked. But others know the truth, and they can be expected to step forward when the time comes. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You should be well on your way to finally making that important decision. Having the support of loved ones will help when crunch time comes. Keep a positive attitude. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Feeling uneasy about a move might not mean you’re having a case of Cancerian wavering. It could be your inner sense is warning you to reassess your situation before taking action. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Your pride could get in the way of admitting you might have erred. Best to ‘fess up now before a small mistake turns into a big misunderstanding. Make the weekend a special family time. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Trying to please someone with a less-than-glowing opinion of something you value could be a waste of time. If you like it, stay with it. The week’s end brings an answer to an old mystery. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) There might be time to make a change. But be honest with yourself: Is it what you really want, or one you feel pressured into making? Your answer should determine your next move. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Change is dominant, but so is caution: Proceed carefully, checking each step along the way to avoid encountering any unwelcome surprises that might be lurking along your path. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) It could be a mistake to rely on someone to keep his or her promise without checking out previous performances. What you learn now could save you from a painful lesson later. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Taking a strong stand on an issue you feel is too important to ignore could inspire others to follow suit. The weekend is a good time to socialize with old friends and make new ones. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Your sensitive nature gives you an insight into the problems of someone close to you. Your offer of support could be just what this person needs to start turning his or her life around. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Financial matters continue to need even more careful analysis than usual. Use caution with investment possibilities. A personal relationship might take an unexpected turn by the week’s end. BORN THIS WEEK: You appreciate the wonders of the world and enjoy sharing your delight with others. Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel On Aug. 9, 1974, Richard Nixon officially resigns as president of the United States, departing in a helicopter from the White House lawn. Minutes later, Vice President Gerald Ford was sworn in. Ford spoke in a television address, declaring, "My fellow Americans, our long national nightmare is over."

cardiologists for my health, and I am devoted to both of them. However, they have conflicting advice. I have coronary artery disease and had three stents placed in New York. I am an active 86-year-old woman who walks at least a mile daily and does light weights. My lab results are all normal. I take a daily baby aspirin and Plavix. I’ve done well with them. My Florida doctor wants me to discontinue the Plavix and take just the aspirin, but my New York doctor thinks I should keep the Plavix forever. I honestly don’t know the right course of action. -- S.T.M. ANSWER: Both aspirin and Plavix (clopidogrel) work by decreasing the activity of platelets, the specialized blood cells that start to form clots. They have been shown to reduce blockages of stents, which hold open blood vessels that have been unblocked via a catheter in the heart. There are several different types of stents, and some of them have medications embedded in them, which release slowly over many months. These “drug-eluting” stents require using both aspirin and clopidogrel for a longer period of time. There is some debate about how long to continue these medications, but I have not read any recommendations to continue them for more than 30 months. A study (the DAPT trial) used exact information about the person and the type of stent to make predictions about balancing risks, and the results of the study showed that in your case, using both aspirin and clopidogrel would reduce heart attack risk slightly, but at an increased risk of bleeding. Nonetheless, some cardiologists will continue both medications in some patients if there are no problems. It sounds like your New York cardiologist may have more knowledge about the stent, as it was performed in New York, so I would try to get the two of them to reach a consensus. There may be something about your particular case that warrants long-term treatment with these medications. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: A few years ago, Johns Hopkins produced an article stating that possibly being hard of hearing and doing nothing about it could lead to Alzheimer’s disease. Is that study still valid? -- S.S. ANSWER: It’s been almost 30 years since a link between hearing loss and dementia was first published, and recent research has confirmed this link. It now seems clear that hearing loss increases the rate of decline in brain function by 30% to 40%, independent of other risk factors. Put another way, people with mild hearing loss had double the risk of dementia in 10 years; those with moderate hearing loss, triple the risk; those with severe hearing loss had five times the risk of dementia compared with people of normal hearing and the same age. The brains of people with hearing loss are more likely to atrophy as well. Of course, not everybody with hearing loss develops dementia, and people with normal hearing can. There is some, but not conclusive, evidence that hearing aids protect the brain from dementia in people with hearing loss. However, it is clear that hearing aids can improve social functioning, well-being and some measures of memory. Despite this evidence, many older people with hearing loss do not get it treated. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. DID YOU KNOW? According to Let’s Move!, a comprehensive initiative launched by First Lady Michelle Obama to combat childhood obesity, doctors are concerned that the rise of obesity in children and teens may lead to problems such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, asthma, and sleep apnea as they age. Children who are obese may have high cholesterol, high blood pressure and an abnormal glucose tolerance, increasing their risk factors for cardiovascular disease. But poor physical health is not the only concern parents should have if their children are obese. Overweight and obese children are often targets of social discrimination, which can negatively affect their selfesteem and may even hinder their academic and social functioning. Parents concerned about their children’s weight should consult their children’s physicians and recognize that a combination of daily exercise and a healthy diet is the most effective way to help kids lose weight and maintain a healthy weight into adulthood.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel On Aug. 5, 1981, President Ronald Reagan begins firing 11,359 air-traffic controllers striking in violation of his order to return to work. Two days earlier almost 13,000 air-traffic controllers went on strike over negotiations to raise their pay. On Aug. 6, 1945, an American B-29 bomber, the Enola Gay, drops the world’s first atom bomb over the city of Hiroshima, Japan. On Aug. 7, 1959, the American satellite Explorer 6 is launched into Earth orbit. The 142-pound spacecraft featured a photocell scanner that transmitted a crude picture of the Earth’s surface from a distance of 17,000 miles. The photo, received in Hawaii, took nearly 40 minutes to transmit. On Aug. 8, 1863, after his defeat at Gettysburg, Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee sends a letter of resignation to Confederate President Jefferson Davis. Davis refused the request.

Health Services And Screenings Every Woman Should Know About (NAPSI)-Eating a healthy diet, exercising, getting a regular Pap smear and mammogram-these are just a few of the many steps women can take to help ensure they live longer, healthier lives. However, it can be tough to figure out what to do, given the mountains of information that are available. So, how can women determine which services and screenings are right for them-and when? You can start by being aware of what the science says about preventing certain health conditions and by having an open and honest conversation with your doctor about your values and preferences. Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) is the number one cause of death for women. Fortunately, you can help prevent CVD by addressing important risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and obesity. Talk to your doctor about your CVD risk and whether a low- or moderate-dose statin may be right for you. Statins are medications that lower your cholesterol, prevent buildup of cholesterol and fats in your arteries, and reduce your chances of having a heart attack or stroke. Depending on your age and risk factors, taking a low-dose aspirin daily can also potentially help prevent CVD. Aspirin can help keep blood clots from happening, lowering your risk. You can reduce your risk of CVD by quitting smoking, eating a healthy diet, and becoming more physically active. Cervical Cancer - Screening for cervical cancer finds the disease when it is most treatable. Unfortunately, 12,000 women in the United States are diagnosed with cervical cancer each year. Most cases of cervical cancer happen in women who have not been regularly screened or appropriately treated. That is why it is critical for women to get screened regularly starting at age 21. There are several effective options for screening, depending on your age and preferences. The Pap test and the human papillomavirus (HPV) test are the most effective ways to screen for cervical cancer and are done during a visit to your doctor’s office. Talk to your doctor about which test is best for you and how often you should be tested. Breast Cancer - Breast cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in women; roughly 237,000 cases are reported in the United States each year. Breast cancer screening aims to find the disease early, when it is easier to treat. Mammograms, which are X-ray pictures of the breasts used by doctors to look for early signs of the disease, are the most effective method of screening for breast cancer. Evidence shows that the benefits of mammograms increase with age, with women aged 60 to 69 most likely to benefit from screening. Still, about one in three women who should get a mammogram regularly do not. If you are between the ages of 50 and 74, talk to your doctor about getting a mammogram regularly. Screening for Osteoporosis - As people age, their bones begin to thin. For some people, their bones become very weak and can break or fracture more easily, a condition known as osteoporosis. Osteoporosis affects one in every four women age 65 or older in the United States. Bone measurement tests can be used to screen for osteoporosis and identify the likelihood of future fractures. For people who have osteoporosis, treatments are available to reduce the risk of a fracture. If you are a woman age 65 or older ask your doctor about being screened for osteoporosis and other ways to improve bone health. For further information visit www.uspreventiveservicestaskforce. org

WATERING 101: HELP YOUR LAWN THRIVE THROUGH THE DOG DAYS OF SUMMER Recognize that not all plants are the same. How much water a plant needs and how frequently it needs to be watered largely depends on how deep its roots are. A plant with shallow roots won’t need to be watered for long periods of time, but it will need to be watered frequently, whereas a deeprooted plant like a tree or a shrub will need to be watered for long periods of time but not as frequently. Research the plants around your property to determine the depths of their root systems and water accordingly.

GO GREEN WHEN SPENDING TIME OUTDOORS THIS SUMMER Embrace eco-friendly activities. Various activities, from organic gardening to planting trees to beach cleanups, provide a great way to get outdoors and help the planet at the same time. Men and women who grow their own vegetables can take solace knowing that the vegetables they’re eating each night did not require the depletion of any natural resources to go from garden to table. Signing up for beach cleanups can prevent trash, including harmful plastics, from making its way into the world’s oceans, and such cleanups provide a great excuse to go to the beach.

husband and I coffee. These caretakers see everything day in and day out, and in time, they may become desensitized to what the patient and family are experiencing because to them it is an everyday occurrence, but Chelsea was not that way.
My husband spoke to Rick on the phone, and he said that he would be out within the hour and assured us that he would have us up and running once he found out what was going on. He was attentive to our needs, and did a job well done. It didn’t take long and Rick did keep his word and had us up and running with air! You don’t work during the day. Why can’t you go out and mow during the day instead of between 5pm and 8pm every night of the week? The people who do mow at night work for a living, and they don’t mow every night. Be respectful neighbor. Think about it! used to hear years ago that “white man speaks with forked tongue.” These days they would have to include women also. I refer to the ad for the “endorsed candidates” for [local town] in this week’s paper. They claim they will work to keep our taxes low. What a joke! Our recent assessment had us fighting to keep “our” taxes low. on Saturday 7-5-19. I’ve noticed a single senior citizen man at the register was paying his bill. He looked at me and gave me a little smile! Later on when we asked our waitress for our check she said a single man had already picked it up! We were so happy and filled with pleasant surprise that there is still a great person left in the world who walks around and doing good deeds...We have to pay it forward. So, if you are the nice gentleman who did this for us, we would like to send you a big hug and sincere thanks. It meant a lot to us, and God bless you, sir.
from years of experience, the town raises taxes though assessments, but for some reason doesn’t acknowledge that fact with their words. I don’t understand. I very often bring items to the [local] store in [local town], as many people do. Everything sold there is donated, so I can’t get over how most things are marked. Most everything is marked high. Some of the kid’s clothes are marked up as much as you can get brand new if you catch a good sale. Even adult clothes are very high. After all, everything is donated.

RELOCATING FOR A NEW JOB Rent your first home. The Allied survey found that 31 percent of respondents indicated the most challenging part of relocating for a job was finding a home, while 29 percent felt acclimating to their new community was the most challenging aspect of their relocation. Adults who rent their first homes upon relocating can remove some of the pressure to find the perfect home, knowing full well their first home in their new community will be temporary. If possible, rent in a location that makes it easy to immerse yourself in your new community, which should make the adjustment easier. In addition, place items that are unnecessary for day-to-day life in storage. Having some of your possessions already packed should make your next move less stressful.
