MOMENTS IN TIME * On Sept. 23, 1908, a game between the New York Giants and Chicago Cubs ends in 1-1 tie after a controversial call at second base. The officials ruled that Giants first baseman Fred Merkle was out because he failed to touch second base, a call that has been disputed ever since. (The History Channel)

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * The first webcam was created to check a coffeepot! In 1993, researchers in the University of Cambridge’s computer science department really didn’t like getting up from their chairs to check the coffeepot just to find it empty, so they wired a system that would stream three images per minute from the Trojan Room, where the pot was kept, to the internal computer network. By the end of that year, the stream made it onto the new World Wide Web, endowing the Trojan Room coffeepot with international, if brief, fame.

Flu Shot Clinics The standard 2020-2021 vaccine provides protection against four flu viruses, including H3N2 and H1N1.

High Dose Option (limited quantities)

This year, there is a second option for those 65 and older. This high-dose flu vaccine contains additional antigen designed to create a stronger immune response in the person getting the vaccine. The high-dose vaccine protects against four flu viruses.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Diet Is Powerful Tool to Boost Heart Health ---

2 Bedroom Townhomes

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a strong history of premature heart disease in my family, and I have been having some unpleasant side effects of blood pressure medicine. I decided to try a completely plant-based diet: grains, vegetables, legumes, fruit, seeds and nuts. After about a month on the new diet, my total cholesterol dropped 44 points to 159, and the other numbers went from borderline to normal, as measured by my cardiologist. My blood pressure, which was often high in the mornings (typically 150+/90), was 118/68 this morning. I’ve only lost about 5 pounds in the past couple of months, and I’m probably still 8-10 pounds overweight. I am pleased with the results, but why didn’t any of my doctors recommend this? -- J.S.B. ANSWER: Diet is a powerful tool for improving overall health, especially heart health. I believe it is underemphasized by most physicians. Changing from a meat-based diet to a mostly plant-based diet often prompts improvements in blood pressure, cholesterol and weight. Your results are better than most, but by no means unheard of. You haven’t said how you feel, but many people feel more energetic as well. Many others are able to come off of some (occasionally all) of their medications, which of course reduces side effects. Why don’t physicians recommend it? I think it’s a combination of reasons. Some doctors don’t realize how powerful the effects of dietary change can be. A good deal of patients are highly resistant to making changes, so physicians are used to their dietary advice failing. Also, taking the time to get an accurate diet history is hard, personalizing dietary advice is harder, and writing a prescription is easy. It is not necessary to have a 100% vegan diet like yours to experience a benefit. A mostly plant-based diet has substantial benefits. It’s easier for some people to make incremental changes. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I’ve been taking Viagra for several years with good results for my wife and me. Recently my prescription drug coverage administrator has begun restricting my access to 12 pills every 30 days. I’ve requested an explanation from the company without success. My prescription is written by my heart doctor, and he is not aware of any reason to restrict my access to Viagra. Is there some danger in taking Viagra (sildenafil) on a regular basis? The literature supplied with the prescription, from Pfizer, does not indicate a limit on use. I’d appreciate your feedback on this, as it will affect my wife’s and my happiness. -- J.R. ANSWER: The insurance company isn’t worried about your safety: Sildenafil (Viagra) and similar drugs are safe for daily use in most people, and your cardiologist is certainly the right person to make that determination, not your insurance company. Instead, the drug limits are there to save money for the insurance company. People can make up their own minds about whether that is reasonable or not, but it is a near-universal finding now. One way many patients get around this (if they are taking 25 mg or 50 mg) is to get the larger-size tablet and cut it in half (a pill cutter can do this well), since the limit is on the number of tablets, not the number of milligrams. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. MAKE FALL CLEAN-UP ECO-FRIENDLY Take inventory Look at which items in the yard have seen better days and prepare to recycle or reuse them in different ways. Faded plastic planters can be used as impromptu bird baths in a garden. An old tire can be mulched and turned into soft material to put around a playset. Inquire as to the proper way to recycle plastic lawn chairs that may be broken.

Check for drafts and leaks Fall is an ideal time to check windows and doors for cracks where water, air or insects can enter. Seal up holes and cracks, and ensure there are no drafty areas. Drafts can cause home heating and cooling systems to work harder, expending more energy than necessary.

FALL LAWN CARE TIPS Keep mowing, but adjust how you mow. It’s important that homeowners continue to mow their lawns so long as grass is growing. But as fall transitions into winter, lower the blades so the grass is cut shorter while remaining mindful that no blade of grass should ever be trimmed by more than one-third. Lowering the blades will allow more sunlight to reach the grass in the months ahead.

Mask Makers: COVID’s Everyday Heroes: Part I BY AMANDA DUDEK

T

o wear masks or not to wear masks has become the question lately. No matter where you stand there is no denying the care and selflessness shown by those at home who gave, and continue to give, their time, resources and talents to make masks for those in need. Five of these unsung heroes in Livingston and Ontario Counties open up about their maskmaking journeys. Linda Richards – York

When the pandemic resulted in a shutdown, Personal Trainer Linda Richards went from working 16-hour days to having a great deal of free time. “I thought, what do I do Linda Richards (right) made many headbands with my life?” said and masks with lots of help from Linda only half-joking. Linda Nicastro (left)! “I needed to help at a time when I felt helpless.” She began making headbands and straps with buttons to relieve ears from mask straps. “We called it Save the Ears!” she said. Linda’s efforts soon caught on. “I made 25 buttoned headbands to start with,” she recalled. “People found them via Facebook and word-ofmouth and began asking for them.” Almost immediately, a lack of supplies and closed stores became an issue; help came from across state lines. “I had a Facebook friend who reached out and began sending me headbands and other materials from Texas,” shared Linda. “Some people sewed a few, as well.”

These headbands, made by Linda Richards, have buttons sewn on them to relieve ears from mask straps!

Now, Linda, with a lot of help from a friend, has made over 1,000 headbands. She has sent them all over the country and to Puerto Rico. “We have used some unique and unusual buttons, so sometimes, we will see someone wearing a headband we are pretty sure is ours. I also just made headbands for kids who are going back to school. It was fun!”

fabric.” Deborah is continuing to make masks while there is need. “I have connected with different organizations, put some in shops and have people stop by,” she explained. Deborah welcomes anyone in need to reach out to her. Karen Schenk – Naples Across the Livingston-Ontario County line in Naples lives Karen Schenk. When she saw masks being Deborah Wolfanger displays sold for high prices, Karen knew she some of the numerous, had to do something to help people in colorful masks she has made! need, especially those who didn’t have extra money. Her clever solution would help in more ways than one. “A friend encouraged me to make some masks, and it just went viral,” explained Karen. “I posted a picture, and everyone loved them. So, I began giving the masks away for free, and asking people to donate whatever they could for me to give to Naples Angels, an organization which helps those in the community who are struggling to pay their bills.

Karen has raised more than $300 for Naples Angels. Her masks can now be found at Joseph’s Market in Naples with the profits continuing to support the local organization, although they frequently sell out more quickly than she can make them. She plans to continue making them as long as people request them. “It is so rewarding to be able to help people in need, both those who need masks and those who need help paying their One of Karen Schenk’s masks made with bills.” material from Sutton Spoons in Naples!

Deborah Wolfanger – Dansville Quietly, outside the Village of Dansville, Deborah Wolfanger works steadily making masks. She offers them for free of charge to anyone in need and welcomes people to stop by for masks. In fact, she donated over 120 of them to a local hygiene bank. “There was a need,” said Deborah. “The community has been so giving, and those who have received masks have been so thankful.”

Treating a Scratch Under a Dog’s Fur

Call

(585) 729-4886

DEAR PAW’S CORNER:

I took my Springer Spaniel, “Rog,” for a walk in the woods this morning. When we got back, I noticed he was trying to lick a spot behind his shoulder. I found a thin scratch on his skin. I dabbed it with some antibacterial ointment, but that’s about it. Will he be OK? -- Jessica in Jaffrey, New Hampshire

DEAR JESSICA: As long as the wound seems to

be healing, Rog should be fine. Check the area once a day and reapply antibacterial ointment. If it begins to appear puffy and red, or Rog seems very distressed by it, take him to the vet for further evaluation. Most minor scratches on a dog’s skin and paws can be treated at home using the household first-aid kit. You also can build a pet first-aid kit that is easy to access when you walk into the house. In addition to antibacterial ointment (avoid products with hydrocortisone), it should have antiseptic solution, water-based lubricant like KY (not Vaseline), clean towels, an empty squeeze bottle (like a ketchup bottle), tick-removal tweezers, a muzzle, small scissors and a disposable razor to gently remove fur. (Electric clippers are an even safer option.) To treat a small scratch or cut, fill the squeeze bottle with lukewarm water. Hold your dog securely, placing a muzzle on him to prevent bites if he gets agitated. Trim or shave away hair from the area. Gently clean the wound using the squeeze bottle of water. Pat dry. Dab the antiseptic onto the wound, then apply antibiotic ointment. Cover lightly with a bandage if possible; otherwise, prevent your dog from licking away the ointment for at least 10 minutes. Check and reapply ointment daily as it heals. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

WALGREENS IS THE BEST! Mary Ann is always so nice and kind at the checkout counter. She was one of the main reasons why I started going to Walgreen’s in Brockport. She is very capable when it comes to voiding items that will not be accepted on my insurance card. Not only does she do her job very well, but she is always very pleasant. From what I have experienced since shopping at Walgreens for the past 10 months, they seem to train their employees not only to do an excellent job, but also to treat their customers the way customers should be

treated. Keep up the good work! It does not go unnoticed, and it is very much appreciated, especially during these difficult times. Thank you!

MUSIC My suggestion to the person who hates neighbor playing music is to re-locate in the country where you will not have to contend with anyone and anything. Do dogs barking bother you? How about children in a neighbor’s yard? You should be ashamed of yourself for complaining about such a trivial thing. There are so many more serious issues in this world. Consider yourself blessed if the worst thing your neighbors are doing is playing music. Perhaps if you listen to some music, it will bring you much needed relief for whatever is going on in your mind.

RABBLE-ROUSERS People who oppose a new business in a town before there is even a public hearing to hear the proposal, and they do not even live in the town or hamlet, people who wrongly say they are speaking for everyone else, saying they know for a fact that most of the people don’t want this, people who say instead of a chain store they’d like to see a small family-owned business or a business unique to the community take over the space, then why don’t those of you opposing the “chain store” be the ones who open a small family-owned business or a business unique to the

community in the proposed space? Don’t talk the talk unless you can walk the walk. PLEASE BE CONSIDERATE I have to wonder why some customers can’t follow store rules during this pandemic. Working as a cashier at a retail store, I too often need to ask people to keep their distance from a current customer and to stand back and wait to be called up to the register. Too many times, I get berated by customers who can’t read the signs or follow instructions. If you can follow these rules in a grocery store, why is it so hard to also do it in a retail store? * The asteroids in “Star Wars” were actually painted potatoes.

NOW HERE'S A TIP

EQUAL HOUSING OPPORTUNITY

By JoAnn Derson * Cooking a recipe with garlic and onions to start? Invite me to dinner! But first, remember to let the onions cook to nearly translucent before adding the garlic, which cooks much faster. If you put both in at the same time, the garlic will burn before the onions have a chance to deepen their flavor. * Automatic toilets are great for not having to touch the handles, but they can be scary for kids -- and some adults too, if I’m being honest. Try putting a sticky note over the sensor so that it will not flush until you take it off, giving you some control.

NOW HERE’S A TIP Got unexpected company? For a quick, clean look, vacuum the floors and take care of these four things: the bathroom, dishes in the sink, piles of junk on tables or counters and an overflowing trash can. Your house will look great.

* “For chores, I write tasks on sticky notes and put them up on our family board. The kids choose the things they want to do, and when they are done to my satisfaction I sign their ticket. At the end of the week, they can bring me the tickets to pay out. This is for extra money, so they don’t have to do it; I don’t have to chase them, and I don’t have to keep track of it either.” -- E.L. in Montana * Every so often, use a very diluted bleach solution to rinse out your reusable water bottles. Put them on a bottle rack to air dry completely before sealing them back up. * “I use the same grip tape that my son uses for his baseball bat on my hand tools, like my hammer and pry bar. I also have used it on my lawn tools. It makes a nice barrier that stays put.” -- C.R. in South Carolina * Things you should wash with soap and water more often than you think: hairbrushes, eyeglasses (and sunglasses) and keychains. Think about how often they get handled and how infrequently they get cleaned. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

FORTIS SCHOOL OF NURSING AT ALL-STATE CAREER SCHOOL LAUNCHES PRACTICAL NURSING PROGRAM Program Meets Underserved Nursing Need in Philadelphia Area (NAPSI)—By 2030, the baby boomer generation, totaling more than 2.1 million in Pennsylvania, will be over 65. Many will require medical care at nonhospital settings such as long-term care facilities and community health centers. Yet, our country’s ability to care for this population will be impacted by the dwindling number of nurses. In response, All-State Career School, a leading postsecondary institution in Essington, has launched a new Practical Nursing (PN) program to provide a pipeline of support to hospitals and other health care facilities in the South Philadelphia metropolitan area. “One of our goals for this new PN program is to increase the number of well-prepared, professional, caring nurses who can be employed in this community,” said Dr. Sheila Burke, Vice President of Nursing for Education Affiliates.

Gardeners Would you kindly tell me why my hydrangeas will not bloom? I have a blue one - it had two flowers this year. I did give them the proper food to turn them blue - and they were blue. I also have a pink and red one. They have not bloomed in a number of years. I do leave the wood until the following spring. I do not trim them back in the fall. My oak leaf hydrangeas bloom beautifully. Any suggestions? They are in the front of the house and face west. Thank you! - Lisa D.

Your problem with a non-blooming macrophyla (big leaf) hydrangea is common. This plant has hardy roots, but the buds are not very hardy. They get frozen during the winter or are sometimes munched off by deer. Fluctuating temperatures during the winter have made this problem worse. Sometimes, these plants bloom for the first few years then the blooms diminish. You can try surrounding it with a wire cage, then filling it with mulched fall leaves to provide more winter protection. The website Hy-

You may Quercifolia. consider replacing it with a more reliable bloomer, including one from the Hydrangea Arborescens group, or a macrophyla bred to include some of the hardy genetics of the Serrata
