Hearing Loss Is Treatable! TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
Let the experts at Professional Hearing Solutions help you get back to hearing life in high definition!
By Keith Roach, M.D.
Is Acupuncture for Real?
Call Dr. Christine Stein at Professional Hearing Solutions... she provides quality care in a warm, friendly environment.
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: You have mentioned acupuncture as a treatment for several conditions. I have read otherwise. How strong is the evidence for its use? -- R.L. ANSWER: The effectiveness of acupuncture for over 50 different medical conditions was reviewed by the Cochrane Collaboration, an evidence-based medicine group. Some of these show significant benefit; for example, acupuncture improves pain and function in people with fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis, when compared with placebo pills. Acupuncture also was better than doing nothing and better than some other treatments. On the other hand, the Cochrane group could not find enough evidence to say whether acupuncture is effective for many other conditions, such as depression or shoulder pain. More importantly, some authors have argued that the benefit from acupuncture is a placebo response, and that the apparent benefit of acupuncture compared with a placebo pill is merely that acupuncture is a more effective placebo than just a pill. There certainly is evidence that even surgery has a potential for a placebo response, and one interesting recent study showed that people with Parkinson’s disease got more improvement in motor skills from a placebo pill they were told cost $1,500 than they did with the identical placebo if they were told it cost only $100. This shows me that our minds have a tremendous ability to improve our bodies if we really believe we can. I think that to a very large extent, and perhaps entirely, the real benefits seen by people who undergo acupuncture are a manifestation of the placebo response. Acupuncture has far fewer side effects than many medications and helps people with a variety of conditions. Whether its effect is “real” or placebo is almost not an issue.

DEAR DR. ROACH: Last year, I started getting Raynaud’s. I can
Magic Maze TINY
remember from my youth that my father had it, so it didn’t seem too terrible. It’s not just the fingertips that turn white, but also some of my toes are affected. I asked people who know of it or have it how one gets this. What is the cause? No one knows. So I asked my doctor. Even he said he did not know. How do I get these episodes, and what can I do to prevent them? -- R.S. ANSWER: Raynaud phenomenon is an exaggerated response to cold or stress, causing color changes in the skin of the fingers and toes. There is a long list of causes of Raynaud phenomenon. Often, no cause is ever found (in which case it is called primary Raynaud, which just means we don’t know what’s causing it). The most common known causes are the autoimmune rheumatic diseases, especially scleroderma, lupus and Sjogren’s syndrome. Hypothyroidism is an unusual cause, and some drugs can cause it as well. The current thinking is that primary RP is caused by abnormalities in the alpha receptors in blood vessels (alpha receptors respond to adrenaline and similar molecules). Keeping the whole body -- and especially the hands -- warm is the first step. Sudden temperature changes can trigger the effect. Warming the hands in warm water at the onset of an attack can stop it. Anxiety makes it worse, so a positive attitude can really affect this condition. Medications, such as amlodipine, may be necessary for prevention in more severe cases. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Stick to the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule. Adhering to your vehicle’s maintenance schedule serves many purposes, including improving the its durability and protecting various components, including its cooling system and drivetrain. While many manufacturers used to recommend changing a vehicle’s oil every 3,000 miles, many of today’s newer automobiles need their oil changed less frequently. ANNUAL DRINKING WATER QUALITY REPORT FOR 2018 CANANDAIGUA-FARMINGTON WATER DISTRICT MANCHESTER VILLAGE AND TOWN WATER DISTRICTS Introduction We are pleased to present to you this year’s Annual Water Quality Report. This report is designed to inform you about the quality water and services we deliver to you every day. The purpose of this report is to provide information about the quality of water that we provide to you. Our constant goal is to provide you with a safe and dependable supply of drinking water. We want you to understand the efforts we make to continually improve the water treatment process and protect our water resources. Last year, in the Canandaigua-Farmington Water District, the Town of Manchester and the Village of Manchester your tap water met all State drinking water health standards. We are committed to ensuring the quality of your water. If you have any questions about this report or concerning your water utility, please contact either: Canandaigua-Farmington:................................................................... David Degear, Water Superintendent ................................................ (585) 924-3158 Town of Manchester: ............................................................................ William Murphy, Water Superintendent ........................................... (585) 289-3010 Village of Manchester: .......................................................................... Jeff Liberati, Water Superintendent .................................................... (585) 289-4340 New York State Department of Health ............................................. Geneva District Office ........................................................................... (315) 789-3030 We want our valued customers to be informed about their water utility. If you want to learn more, please attend any of our regularly scheduled Town Board Meetings. The meetings are held: Town of Farmington: The second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the Farmington Town Hall located at 1000 County Road 8, Farmington, New York. Town of Manchester: The second Tuesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. at the Manchester Town Hall located at 1272 County Road 7, Clifton Springs, New York. Village of Manchester: The first Monday of each month at 6:00 p.m. at the Manchester Village Hall located at 8 Clifton Street, Manchester, New York.
Where Does Our Water Come From? Our water source is surface water source, Canandaigua Lake. The Canandaigua-Farmington Consolidated Water District is supplied from City of Canandaigua. The City of Canandaigua operates a Water Filtration Plant located on West Lake Road in the Town of Canandaigua. After filtration, carbon can also be added for taste and odor control. The water is disinfected by injection of gaseous chlorine, sodium hydroxide is added for pH control to reduce corrosion in the distribution system and then fluoride is added before being pumped to the distribution system. The treated water enters the Canandaigua-Farmington Consolidated Water District through meter pits located at the City of Canandaigua line or at the connection point with the City of Canandaigua’s transmission main. The Canandaigua-Farmington Consolidated Water District supplies treated water from the City of Canandaigua to the Village of Manchester and the Town of Manchester Central District. New York State Department of Health has completed a source water assessment for Canandaigua Lake with the following results: This assessment found a moderate susceptibility to contamination for this source of drinking water. The amount of agricultural lands in the assessment area results in elevated potential for protozoa, phosphorus, DBP precursors, and pesticides contamination. While there are some facilities present, permitted discharges do not likely represent an important threat to source water quality based on their density in the assessment area. However, it appears that the total amount of wastewater discharged to surface water in this assessment area is high enough to further raise the potential for contamination (particularly for protozoa). There is also noteworthy contamination susceptibility associated with other discrete contaminant sources, and these facility types include: IHWS, CBS, landfills, mines, RCRA, and TRI. The sources of drinking water (both tap water and bottled water) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs and wells. As water travels over the surface of the land or through the ground, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive material, and can pick up substances resulting from the presence of animals or human activity. Contaminants that may be present in source water include: > Microbial contaminants
> Inorganic contaminants
> Pesticides and herbicides
> Organic chemical contaminants
> Radioactive contaminants
Facts and Figures The Canandaigua-Farmington water system serves over 12,000 people through 4,447 service connections. The total water purchased for the year in 2018 was 658.385 million gallons. The daily average of water treated and pumped into the distribution system was 1.804 million gallons per day. Our highest day was 2.389 million gallons for the year. The amount of water delivered to customers was 571.444 million gallons for the year. 301,400 gallons were distributed though fire hydrant meter rentals. This leaves unaccountable water total of 86.640 million gallons for the year. Approximately 20% of our unaccountable water was used to flush watermains and hydrants, and for fighting fires and fire protection. Approximately 10% of our unaccountable total water was due to water main leakage. This leaves an unaccountable total of 60.648 million gallons, which is 9.21% of the total water purchased for 2018. In 2018, water customers were charged $4.05 per 1,000 gallons for 0 to 6,000 gallons of water used and additional usage over 6,000 gallons is $4.55 per 1,000 gallons or a minimum quarterly bill of $24.30. The Canandaigua-Farmington Consolidated Water District sells water to the Town and Village of Manchester. Their System facts and figures are as follows: The Village of Manchester services a population of 1,709 through 501 service connections. The total water purchased in 2018 was 43.325 million gallons. The daily average to the distribution system was 118,699 gallons per day. The single highest day was 408,000 gallons. The amount of water sold to customers was 40.452 million gallons. Approximately 225,000 gallons of water was used to flush watermains and hydrants, fighting fires, etc. Water loss due to water main breaks 525,000. Two water main breaks in 2018, Merrick Circle and Pratt Road. Pratt Road had a Boil Water Advisory. This leaves an unaccounted total of 2.123 million gallons, which is 5.0% of the total purchased. In 2018, water customers were charged $26.00 for 0 to 5,000 gallons of water used as the minimum quarterly bill. Any additional usage over 5,000 gallons is $4.50 per thousand. $4.00 water meter rent per quarter. Manchester Village is required to monitor your drinking water for specific contaminants on a regular basis. Results of regular monitoring are an indicator of whether or not your drinking water meets health standards. During November 2018 we did not fully monitor or test for disinfection by-products and, therefore, cannot be sure of the quality of your drinking water during that time. The Town of Manchester Water Districts services a population of 1460 through 570 service connections. The total water purchased in 2018 was 72.535 million gallons. The daily average to the distribution system was 198,726 gallons per day. The single highest day was 596,890 gallons. The amount of water sold to
customers was 44.337 million gallons. 765,800 gallons was lost due to water main breaks. Approximately 27.432 million gallons of water was used to flush water mains and hydrants. In 2018 water customers were charged $40.50 from 0 to 6,000 gallons of water used as the minimum quarterly bill. Any additional usage over 6,000 gallons is $4.52 per 1,000 thousand. $1.25 water meter rent per quarter. Note: There was a positive test for Coliform on 12/4/18 on Armington Road.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel
Going Away? Tips To Keep Your Home Safe While You’re On Vacation (NAPS)—Peace of mind is important to just about all homeowners, including when they’re away on a hard-earned vacation. When warm weather arrives, however, crime rates increase, according to a study published by the National Center for Biotechnology Information. Fortunately, you may be able to reduce any vacation time stress by taking five steps to improve security—protect your windows, monitor your doors, secure your AC, make your house a difficult target and stay in the loop about what’s happening at home. How to make it look like someone is home, even when you’re away • Stop your mail. Nothing says “there’s nobody home” like an overstuffed mailbox and a pile of newspapers on the front porch. You can fill out a simple form with the United States Postal Service asking it to hold your mail. Or, perhaps better yet, have a trusted neighbor stop by to pick it up. • Leave dog toys in the front yard. Even if you don’t own a dog, you can give a burglar pause by making him or her think that you do. • Maintain a well-kept yard. Remove tree branches that give easy access to top floor windows and cut back tall shrubs that make it easy for burglars to hide behind. • Add outdoor motion sensor lights to scare away those trying to walk into your yard and peek inside. With smart lighting technology, you can program your lights to come on even when you aren’t home. This feature has an advantage over automated timers because you can turn the lights in your home on or off as you please from anywhere with your Internet-connected device, or set routines through your home automation service, such as ADT. • Integrate your wireless doorbell with your lights for further security benefits. Have the doorbell trigger an inside light to give the illusion that someone is home, since burglars prefer dark areas for stealth. While you’re away, home security can act as your house-sitting service and provide real protection. Choose a security company that has 24/7 monitored protection, such as ADT, which has over 19,000 employees who are always ready to help in case of an emergency. If you do choose to hire a house sitter when you’re away, provide him or her with a unique pin code to disarm your security system. Not only will you be alerted when the system is disarmed, you can deactivate this code once you return. With these steps, you’ll have peace of mind on vacation. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

On May 8, 1973, in South Dakota, armed members of the American Indian Movement surrender to federal authorities, ending their 71-day siege of Wounded Knee, site of the infamous massacre of 300 Sioux by the U.S. 7th Cavalry in 1890. On May 11, 1988, Kim Philby, a former British intelligence officer and double agent for the Soviet Union, dies in Moscow. Philby was perhaps the most famous of a group of British government officials who spied for Russia from the 1930s to the 1950s. On May 7, 1994, Norway's most famous painting, "The Scream" by Edvard Munch, is recovered almost three months after it was stolen from a museum in Oslo. It was recovered undamaged from a hotel about 40 miles away. On May 9, 1926, according to their claims, American polar explorer Richard E. Byrd and pilot Floyd Bennett fly over the North Pole in a triple-engine Fokker monoplane. However, the discovery in 1996 of Byrd’s diary suggests they may have turned back short of the pole because of an oil leak.

AWNINGS & WINDOW COVERINGS
Awning
HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You might be tempted to be more assertive when dealing with a job-related matter. But a carefully measured approach works best at getting the cooperation you’re looking for. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) While others urge you to act now, you instinctively recognize that a move at this time is not in your best interests. You should know when to do so by week’s end. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A busy schedule keeps you on the move for much of the week. But things ease up by the time the weekend arrives, allowing you to reconnect with family and friends. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Travel dominates the week, and despite some delays in getting to where you want to go, the overall experience should prove to be a positive one in many ways. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Your Leonine selfconfidence comes roaring back after a brief period of doubt and helps you get through a week of demanding challenges and ultimately emerge triumphant. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Virgos who have made a major commitment -personal or professional -- should be able to tap into a renewed reservoir of selfconfidence to help them follow through. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You soon could receive news from a surprising source that could cause you to change your mind about how you had planned to deal with an ongoing job-related problem. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A surprise move of support from a colleague who has never been part of your circle of admirers helps influence others to take a new look at what you’ve put on the table. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) While a bold decision to take an “I know what I’m doing” approach impresses some colleagues, it also raises the risk of causing resentment among others. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A misunderstanding ‘twixt you and a friend might not be your fault at all, despite what he or she suggests. Talk it out to see at what point the confusion might have started. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Getting into a community operation fulfills the Aquarian’s need to help people. It also can lead to new contacts that might one day help you with a project. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A minor problem could delay the start of a longanticipated trip for two. Use the time to recheck your travel plans. You might find a better way to get where you’re going. BORN THIS WEEK: You are a dedicated romantic who seeks both excitement and stability in your relationships.

Ergonomic gardening tools are designed to prevent the types of aches, pains and injuries that can cut gardeners’ seasons short. Gardening injuries can affect any area of the body, but injuries or aches and pains affecting the back, wrists and hands are among the most common physical problems gardeners endure. Look for ergonomic tools that reduce the strain on these areas of the body. Even arthritis sufferers who love to garden may find that ergonomic tools make it possible for them to spend more time in their gardens without increasing their risk for injury.

Erect physical barriers around gardens. Barriers may not be gardeners’ first choices, as some people feel barriers such as wire cages or mesh coverings make it more difficult to tend to gardens and rob gardens of some of their aesthetic appeal. But coverings and wire cages can effectively prevent wildlife from trampling or eating plants while still allowing the gardens to get adequate sunlight. Make sure barriers extend to the ground so animals cannot access gardens by entering beneath the barricades.

Many an amateur landscaper has encountered grubs while tending to their lawns, but even the most attentive green thumber may have a lawn infested with grubs and not know it. According to the pest and weed experts at Roundup®, grubs often go unnoticed until late summer, when they’ve already done substantial damage to a lawn. Oddly enough, one of the telltales signs of a grub infestation is not the grubs themselves but the animals looking to dine on them. Fully grown grubs make for hearty meals, so homeowners who notice raccoons, skunks, armadillos, and/or birds digging up their lawns may have a grub infestation. That’s because these unwanted guests like to dine on mature grubs who have spent summer feasting on organic matter in the soil. Another sign of a possible grub infestation is a lawn that feels spongy when stepped on. Patches of dead grass that peel back easily are a sign that grubs have eaten the roots that keep healthy grass in place.

Open your eyes, look w ithin. Are you satisfied w ith the life you’re living? - Bob M arley
Flower Meanings If you would like to customize your arrangement of funeral flowers further, there are more flower meanings that might express your sentiments in this time of grief and remembrance. Though they may not be the traditional funeral flowers, any flowers that share your sympathy with the bereaved and celebrate the deceased’s memory are appropriate for a funeral. The xeranthemum symbolizes eternity and immortality. Cyclamens say “goodbye”¤? and forget-me-nots send a message of faithful love and memories. Marjoram conveys comfort and consolation. The nasturtium celebrates patriotism. If you are aware of flowers that were a favorite of the deceased or that a member of the bereaved family particularly favors, those blooms may also be a good choice for a funeral gift. Whatever flowers you choose to send, your thoughtful message of sympathy will certainly be a comfort to those who are mourning the loss of a loved one.
Because We Care by Kevin W. Dougherty and Michael P. Dougherty
THE MEANING OF THE FOLDED FLAG At a military funeral, the flag that drapes the casket of the deceased veteran is positioned with the union field at the head and over the left shoulder of the deceased. After taps is played, the flag is folded into the symbolic tri-cornered shape and presented to the veteran’s family. The thirteen folds of the flag represent the thirteen original colonies, while the triangular shape represents the patriots’ tri-cornered hat. In addition, each fold represents a different belief, honor, tribute, or recognition, with the first fold symbolizing life, the second the belief in eternal life, and the third honoring the departed veteran who gave a portion of his or her life for the defense of our country. At KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME, we realize the sacrifices that the members of our military have made for us to make our country what it is, and we want to help honor them with all the respect, dignity, and recognition that they deserve. To learn about our funeral services, please call (585) 346-5401. We serve families at their time of need providing personalized, compassionate, and professional funeral services. Please tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. QUOTE: “I don’t want to die without any scars.” Charles Palahniuk

I’ve read every complaint about this poor beagle ever since you started writing about him. However, complaining isn’t helping. Have you approached the owner with your sentiments? Have you called the authorities on him? Leaving a dog out in the cold without insulated & heated shelter is against the law and definitely animal abuse. Dogs are pack animals that need companions and love. They have feelings; they are not robots; they freeze in the winter. Offer to adopt the beagle or make so much noise publicly that his owner will willingly give him up. It’s obvious the owner doesn’t care about him. Please, for the dog’s sake, take action. I can’t understand why people like that have pets.

Had a Wonderful Meeting at Karma Coffee & Tea shop on Center Street in Batavia. Great host, the freshest brew around, pastries... Couldn’t have asked for better place for a meeting... You gotta try the place!!!!! All 12 of us thank you for keeping it brewing until we were done. I cannot thank the wonderful woman (Mary from Marion) enough who gave me a ride from Walworth to Penfield when my vehicle was disabled about a week ago. There are still wonderful people in this world! She would not accept anything in It seems that [local town] has found a great money maker in the snow removal ordinance. I was blessed with two violations this winter on [local street]. They charge 40.00 per minute, the whole process of plowing the sidewalks took 2 minutes, and the bill was 80.00! Who makes 40.00 per minute? We shoveled religiously all winter and still got dinged for not shoveling the [local town] sidewalks! Most places use the tax dollars to remove snow from their sidewalks! [Local street] sidewalks were not cleared all winter. I think a petition is in order, and [local town] needs to redo this ordinance! Many street crossings have pedestrian signals that show the words WALK and DON’T WALK or show a WALKING

return. My prayers go out to her, and I hope the dear Lord recognizes her thoughtfulness and kindness. Our family of 5 visited Wolschlegel’s Maple Farm in Naples at the end of March and what a wonderful time we had!!! A beautiful hiking tour through their woods and operation followed by pancakes with fresh syrup. Beautiful views, and a cute “maple products” store. The kicker was as my husband and I scrambled around to get our 3 young kids some food, an employee was quick to give us a hand and kept checking back to make sure we were all set!! Wonderful
PERSON in white and a RAISED HAND in orange. Pedestrian signals direct pedestrians while crossing the street. The WALK or WALKING PERSON appears when it is legal to START crossing. When the DON’T WALK or RAISED HAND appears, you may not start across the street. The FLASHING signal means you should not BEGIN to cross because you may not have enough time to make it to the other side before vehicles start moving across your path. If the flashing starts after you have already started to cross, (which in my case going slow w/a 5-year-old with her bike and training wheels, it started to flash midway) you may finish crossing the street. The pedestrian has the right of way! Patience is a virtue.

people and a wonderful time! We are very lucky to live in such a beautiful place, we should not take it for granted but should take care of it. I find it so sad to look out the car window and see so much trash along the roadside. If everyone would pitch in and clean up the ditches in front of their house, and people would stop tossing garbage out the window, we could really make a huge difference in the aesthetic of our scenic landscape. Make everyday Earth day and take care of our beautiful world!
Every time you have a plumber, electrician, hvac, or repairman do work for you and you pay them with cash, you cannot be certain that they pay any tax on that money. If they do not, they are evading taxes and costing all of us in the long run. If the average citizen would only pay taxes on let’s say half of your income just think how much more take home pay you would have. We know we are all overtaxed, but part of the reason is that there are those among us that do not pay their fair tax, and the rest of us make up for them.

Feral Cat Colony Getting Out of Hand DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We have a number of feral cats living in the wooded area behind our house. I know that these cats normally can’t be acclimated to indoor living, but watching their colony expand isn’t desirable, either. So I’d like to get them to a vet and have them spayed or neutered, and either rehome them somehow or release them again. Any tips on doing this? — Sharon in Atlanta DEAR SHARON: The most common and probably most effective way to catch feral cats is to trap them one at a time using a live trap. They are available at hardware and home-improvement stores, at some pet stores or online. Before starting, find out if there is a feral cat rescue organization in your area. In Atlanta, the nonprofit LifeLine Animal Project may be able to loan you traps, as well as provide sterilization services. Otherwise, contact the veterinarian you plan to work with and make sure he or she is OK with treating, spaying and neutering the cats, and find out the prices in advance. Depending on laws in your area and on who owns the woods behind your property, you may only be able to set the traps on your property. If the feral cats don’t visit regularly, you’ll first need to lure them using food they’re attracted to. When they come around looking for this food, set up the live trap.
Baron is a fantastic short hair cat with tons of charisma. He acts like the royalty that his name implies, and his birthday is 11/11. He pursues an array of hobbies and interests such as watching squirrels and birds, posing for photos, and taking naps. He is known among friends and family for his unique brand of humor, as well as his distinctive sense of style. His cavalier demeanor can sometimes make him come across as arrogant, but he is above all an affectionate friend with a heart of gold. Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.
Trap, neuter and release (TNR) programs typically release the treated cats back into their home territory, as relocation often doesn’t work. Expect the cats you trap to continue their lives in the woods — with the realization that the colony likely won’t grow over time. Send your questions or pet care tips to ask@pawscorner.com. © 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.
