sad I missed the pancake breakfast. Thanks to all the men and women who make up our fire department!

I’d like to thank the Springwater Fire Department. Not only do they do great work responding to all the calls and keeping us safe, but they also throw some amazing community events. They did a paint night that was awesome, a meat raffle that was a lot of fun, and the amazing comedy night. I’m With the nice weather finally upon us, people are enjoying sitting outside more and would maybe like to open their doors and windows to let the fresh air in. However, that is not possible because your dog is barking for hours on end! Please, please, please take your constantly barking dog inside! People do work nights and try and sleep with windows open but can’t because your dog is Always barking! Not to mention how this must affect your poor dog! Maybe your poor dog has some issues that you are ignoring. Obedience training would help as might a separation anxiety vest or medicine! Be a more responsible dog owner. We had to buy a “white noise” device, but it doesn’t help when we want to open the GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

husband, James Delaney, for always being warm and welcoming with a happy smile on their faces. They always welcome our children to come over and play with their kids. New to Springwater! New to the town and discovered we are surrounded by amazing people on all sides, including Yvonne Struble, Mary Markle and Nikki Zinter! All are wonderful, kind people who make us love this town more and more every day.

Dansville has many nice and wonderful people in it, and if you explore the right parts of town, it’s absolutely beautiful.

I LOVE the school system. Coming from a larger city where your child is a number to a community that cares and supports our children is amazing! I will never move out

Thank you, Jessica Delaney and her windows or doors! Your turn now to do what responsible dog owners do. At least help your dog so it isn’t barking all the time! Please! Some say those that are targeted with bullying must have mental health issues. Not necessarily. Many of the minors who do such illegal things as bringing guns to school have stated that they were targeted by bullies. Just because someone is angry doesn’t necessarily mean they have a mental health issue. Often, they are angry because they are suffering injustice. Everyone has a breaking point.

from the end of my driveway doesn’t help when I’m trying to pull out! Clearly, you can see that. You already have TWO driveways to park your many vehicles in; let’s not be selfish. Store your boat, camper and whatever other recreational vehicles you have elsewhere. You know you don’t have room for it all, so you make your neighbors’ lives harder. You act like the street belongs to you. So inconsiderate.

It’s harassment. Plain and simple. When I drove an old silver car, 35 silver cars surrounded me and boxed me in. I traded the car in and got another vehicle recently, and ten days to We already live on a very two weeks later, all the narrow street. of Dansville just on that. I also love my awesome neighbors, and I love how genuinely kind everyone is here and looks out for one another, definitely the place I want my children to be raised in. I love small country towns; they always have the best people. I live in Sparta and have some of the best neighbors! They always take care of my driveway in the winter so it is easy on me. My other neighbors have a garden and are always so giving. I appreciate the people I have around me.

the block, trying to tailgate and high beam me when I travel. Ridiculous. I guess it’s supposed to intimidate me. It doesn’t. Almost every morning, you speed down our road between certain times. The other day, you passed us on a solid yellow line. You are a danger to people on the road, and I’m calling the county sheriff. I hope he will be waiting for you some morning to give you a wakeup call. It is not okay to go speeding down the road. It makes me angry that you think you are above the law, and I hope he will catch you. Enough is enough.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Summer Sun Bakes Mail-Order Meds ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I get all of my medicine by mail. Since the manufacturers stress keeping the pills at cool room temperatures, I wonder what the excessive heat does to them. The medicine must cook all day in the mailbox -- way over 100 degrees here in Florida. I wonder how much the pills or liquids are deteriorating, and how the effectiveness is influenced. -- F.N. ANSWER: You are right to be concerned. All medicines should be stored in a cool and dark place, as direct sunlight and heat can damage their effectiveness. Hormones, such as oral contraceptive pills, thyroid hormone and insulin, are among the most sensitive. Nitroglycerine is as well. Although some are shipped in packaging with cold packs and insulation, that’s not always the case. I recommend using a local pharmacy, but many people have prescription plans that require them to use mail order. If that’s the case for you, try to make sure the medicine will be delivered when you are available to receive it. If you have a temperature-sensitive medicine, such as the ones I mention above (ask your pharmacist about others), ask your mail-order pharmacy to send it in special packaging during warm-weather months. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 68-year-old male. I had triple bypass

1. Our Chosen Spot! 2. Kiara Gramkee showing her chickens at the Dansville First Friday farm event. 3. Charlie digging for gold! 4. Alexa Wallace, 16 yrs old from Webster, performing in The Greatest Show Stoppers at Aerial Arts of Rochester

surgery two years ago. Post-surgery complications included diabetes, pneumonia and renal failure. I spent approximately three months in intensive care. After discharge I started physical therapy, as my arms and hands had atrophied. I am still doing therapy, but continue to have limited use of my arms and hands (I cannot curl my hands without force). Any insight you have as to why I am unable to use my hands would be appreciated. -- C.M. ANSWER: Muscle weakness is common after an ICU stay (it’s seen in more than 25 percent of patients), due to several separate causes. Prolonged immobility can lead to weakness, atrophy and even contractures (involuntary bending at certain joints, such as the elbow and ankle). Both critical illness myopathy (affecting muscles; it’s common in people who received steroids, like prednisone) and critical illness polyneuropathy (affecting nerves; it’s common in people with severe infection, like sepsis) can lead to weakness and atrophy. Medications are sometimes needed to paralyze muscles in surgery or in critical illnesses, and these can have long-lasting side effects, including weakness. Malnutrition is common in ICU patients, not because ICU doctors and nurses don’t know to or don’t want to feed patients, but because the body may be unable to absorb necessary nutrients. Some or all of these may combine to leave lasting physical effects from a long ICU stay. Physical and occupational rehabilitation services are the key to the recovery of function. Return of physical strength is slow and may be incomplete, so it may be necessary to use aids and to learn new ways to perform tasks. It has been my repeated experience that almost everyone can benefit from therapy, and patients who work harder, are more driven and are more optimistic tend to have the best results. Although most benefit is seen in the first year after loss of function, you still may continue to improve with therapy, perhaps utilizing different modalities. Definitely seek an occupational therapist if you haven’t already.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Get your facts together and become familiar with them before you have to face up to that interview. The better prepared you are, the easier it will be to make that important impression. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) New information might warrant changing your mind about a recently made decision. Never mind the temporary confusion it might cause. Acting on the truth is always preferable. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Creating a loving atmosphere for those you care for could pay off in many ways. Expect to hear some unexpected but very welcome news that can make a big difference in your life. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Stepping away from an old and seemingly insoluble problem might be helpful. Use the time to take a new look at the situation and perhaps work out a new method of dealing with it. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You’re still in a favorable goal-setting mode. However, you might need to be a little more realistic about some of your aims. Best to reach for what is currently doable. The rest will follow. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A setback is never easy to deal with. But it could be a boon in disguise. Recheck your proposal and strengthen the weak spots. Seek advice from someone who has “been there and done that.” LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Coming up with a new way of handling a tedious jobregulated chore could lead to more than just a congratulatory memo once the word reaches the “right people.” Good luck. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) What you might call determination, someone else might regard as stubbornness. Look for ways to reach a compromise that won’t require a major shift of views on your part. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You’re still in a vulnerable mode vis-a-vis “offers” that sound too good to be true. So continue to be skeptical about anything that can’t be backed up with provable facts. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Thrift is still dominant this week. What you don’t spend on what you don’t need will be available for you to draw on should a possible (albeit temporary) money crunch hit. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Staying close to home early in the week allows for some introspection about your social life. Sort out your feelings before rejoining your fun-time fellows on the weekend. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) It can be a bit daunting as well as exciting to find yourself finally taking action on a longdelayed move for a change. It helps to stay with it when others rally to support you. BORN THIS WEEK: Your love of home and family provide you with the emotional support you need to find success in the outside world. Richmond Residents I have made the budget and the budget process a priority in my years on the Richmond Town Board. As Town Supervisor I will strive to maintain a budget that provides for our Community while maintaining a tax rate that is fair and affordable to all. The 2009 Town budget contained money for our new Town Hall, yes we needed an additional 35 cents to make the payment for the new Town Hall. I’m glad to report the final payment of $78,000.00 was made in 2018. I worked with Supervisor Pawley and Supervisor Angelo to make this long needed project a reality. The 2017 Town budget contained an additional 27 cents for the culvert, blacktop paving and stripping of our Town Hall parking lot, completed and also paid for in 2018. Both the $78,000.00 for the Town Hall payment and the $49,000.00 for parking lot were left in the 2019 budget when these expenses were no longer required. So the 2019 budget includes $ 127,000.00 extra dollars plus a tax increase of NOT 12% but ACTUALLY 16% . Any fiscally responsible Board member would have Voted NO!!! I invite the People of our community to contact me anytime 585-704-7411. As Supervisor I would welcome you, and welcome your input at our Town Board meetings. We must always remember we serve the people. Please Vote Tuesday June 25 for: • Open Government • Fiscally responsible budgets • Fair taxes for everyone • Planned growth and Improvements for our community

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel

* On June 28, 1972, President Richard Nixon announces that no more draftees will be sent to Vietnam unless they volunteer for such duty. He also announced that a force of 10,000 troops would be withdrawn by Sept. 1, which would leave a total of 39,000 in Vietnam.

Is It Seasonal Allergies Or Dry Eye? (NAPS)—Two of the more common eye-related problems are dry eyes and eye allergies. While the symptoms are similar, there are differences between the two conditions. Sometimes they can occur at the same time, compounding the problem. That’s why it’s important to have a medical eye exam to determine the cause of your symptoms so you can get the appropriate treatment. If you’re concerned about the cost of the exam, the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s EyeCare America program may be able to help. Understanding Allergies Seasonal eye allergy symptoms are like dry eye, but itchiness is more common. When you’re sensitive to an allergen such as molds, pollen, dust or grass, histamine is released, causing itchy, red eyes that tear or burn. Over-the-counter medications are often effective. You can also take the following steps for relief: • Limit exposure to the outdoors on high–pollen count days. • Wash your face and hands after being outside to reduce the amount of pollen on the skin. • Don’t rub your eyes; it may increase the irritants and make symptoms worse.

* On June 27, 1988, heavyweight champion Mike Tyson knocks out challenger Michael Spinks with a left hook in the first round. The match lasted just 91 seconds. * On June 24, 1997, Air Force officials release a 231-page report dismissing long-standing claims of an alien spacecraft crash 50 years earlier in Roswell, New Mexico. The UFO rumors began in 1947 when a rancher found shiny material scattered on his land. The Air Force said it was a downed weather balloon.

Examining Dry Eye Dry eye is a complex disease that has many causes that often overlap and interact. Dry eye can happen when the eye doesn’t produce enough tears or when the quality of the tears can’t keep the surface of the eye adequately lubricated. It frequently occurs with other health conditions. People tend to make fewer tears as they get older due to hormonal changes. Both men and women can get dry eye. However, it is more common in women—especially after menopause. Common symptoms of dry eye disease may include sensitivity to light, dryness and itchiness, the feeling that something is in the eye, fluctuating vision, eye fatigue and excess eye watering. Ophthalmologists—physicians specializing in medical and surgical eye care—will prescribe a variety of treatments based on the cause of the dry eye. For many people, though, a few simple lifestyle changes can resolve the problem: • Try adding moisture to the air with a humidifier. • Protect your eyes from drying wind by wearing wraparound glasses outside. • Add omega-3 fatty acids to your diet for dry eye relief. These are in oily fish (such as salmon, sardines, tuna, trout and anchovies) and in flaxseeds. • Use artificial tear ointment or thick eyedrops just before you go to bed. If your eyes remain red and irritated after trying these tips, see your ophthalmologist. About EyeCare America EyeCare America is a national public service program that provides eye care through volunteer ophthalmologists for seniors 65 and older, and those at increased risk for eye disease. Denali Dog Obedience School,

Meet Brooklyn!

585-924-4506 www.puppyclass.net

Brooklyn was born in Kentucky and came to live with us when she was one year old. She loves people and other dogs and brings smiles to many faces. Her favorite pastime is chasing deer, squirrels and chipmunks. Brooklyn has lots of energy, begs for oatmeal cookies and loves to be petted. How lucky can we be!

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM The Purina Pet Care Center found that overweight pets may live two years less than ideal weight pets. Reduced life span is not the only problem, as carrying extra pounds can contribute to various maladies. These include osteoarthritis and poor joint health, type 2 diabetes, ligament injuries, heart and respiratory disease, kidney disease, and cancer.

Does My Cat Need Himalayan Salt? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m thoroughly confused by all the “health advice” for pets that I read online. One site tells me my cats should eat only organic meats and chicken (and nothing else!), while a Facebook page tells me that my pets will do fine on a vegan diet. My granddaughter’s Instagram feed says that cats need a slew of supplements to be healthy, including pink Himalayan salt, which is all the rage. How can I figure out what’s really best for my cats? — Jim H., Manchester, New Hampshire DEAR JIM: I feel your pain. The internet has given us access to all the information we’re looking for — and all the information we weren’t. Companies have sprung up left and right, peddling the latest supplement or dietary recommendation to keep our pets totally healthy, guaranteed.

Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

Fad diets can sometimes do harm to pets because key nutrients may be left out. Feeding dogs and cats only meat, and nothing else, can be as bad as feeding them no meat. And while most supplements are safe, you have to read up on what they actually do and know what a safe dose is.

Sponsored this week by:

Your first and best resource is your pet’s veterinarian, who has years of advanced education in animal care and stays abreast of the latest developments in pet health and wellness. He or she can tell you the best diet or supplements to give your cats, and which info on the internet to pay attention to and which to disregard.

PET CARE & GROOMING

Talk to the vet at your cats’ next checkup, and you’ll get a much clearer picture of the best way to keep them healthy and well fed. No trendy salts needed.

If you or a loved one decides to be cremated, choosing what to do with the cremains comes next. For those wanting to have their cremains committed to a special place that can be visited, ashes can be buried in a “sacred place” (like a cemetery) or they can be kept in a columbarium (essentially, a mausoleum for cremation urns). Others may elect to store cremains in a beautiful urn that remains in a loved one’s home or is rotated between family members. Some individuals entertain the notion of having their cremains dispersed at sea, in a special place on land, or simply cast to the wind. In such cases, it is very important not to disperse cremains without permission. There are many advantages to taking some time to remember the life lived, share stories and laugh about all of the memories. Our team can help you plan a fitting memorial service with or without the cremation urn present, at our facility or in a place of your choosing. To find out more about the services we offer, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. We serve families at their time of need providing personalized, compassionate, and professional funeral services. Please tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. AVOID ACHES AND PAINS WHEN GARDENING Use ergonomic gardening tools. Ergonomic gardening tools are designed to prevent the types of aches, pains and injuries that can cut gardeners’ seasons short. Gardening injuries can affect any area of the body, but injuries or aches and pains affecting the back, wrists and hands are among the most common physical problems gardeners endure. Look for ergonomic tools that reduce the strain on these areas of the body. Even arthritis sufferers who love to garden may find that ergonomic tools make it possible for them to spend more time in their gardens without increasing their risk for injury.

GROWING TRENDS IN TODAY’S HOMES Smaller homes: Home sizes in the United States steadily increased for decades, eventually leading to an average of 2,453 square feet in 2014, according to U.S. Census figures. However, Realtor.com reported in 2015 that new construction homes have already begun to shrink by 40 square feet. There seems to be a slight trend toward more modest homes as people consider affordability and maintenance on larger properties. The National Association of Home Builders states buyers are now looking for smaller, more livable homes with flexible floor plans, energy-efficient appliances and plenty of storage space.

ROOMS CAN SERVE DOUBLE DUTY Entertaining guests is easier when there’s a dedicated space where visitors can feel at home. When furnishing a living room, keep the guest room in mind. A sofa that opens up to a bed or a convertible sectional can be a comfortable place for guests to lay their heads. Side tables provide guests with places to store their belongings, and an empty storage chest can house bed linens or guests’ clothing.

Andy Webster Brings the Walden Project to the Finger Lakes By Amanda Dudek

S

pending the academic year in the woods while earning seven high school credits was a dream that became a reality for several students last year. Inspired by the much-lauded Walden Project created by innovator Matt Schlein in Vermont, the Walden Project New York is only the second Walden Project in the country to date. This fulltime, year-away program is based on the work of Henry David Thoreau. The Walden Project offers high school and gap year students the opportunity to step away from society and think about the bigger questions of life. “The whole curriculum is based on Thoreau’s experience at Walden Pond,” explained Walden Project NY founder and former public school teacher, Andy Webster. “Experiential and very much about self-directed learning, it is driven by three guiding questions: What is my relationship to myself? What is my relationship to my culture? What is my relationship to the natural world?” These complex questions provide the framework for meaningful learning through discussion, reflection and authentic experiences. Walden Project’s (NY’s) curriculum is comprised of six 6-week units: A Sense of Place, Self-Reliance, Social Justice, Economics, Environmentalism and Communication. Students earn 7 high school credits: English Language Arts, Math (Systems Thinking), Social Studies, Environmental Science, Health, Physical Education, and Applied Arts.

Students really connected with what we are doing. On Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, students walk a 1/4 mile uphill through the woods to a ring of benches around a campfire at Cumming Nature Center, owned by the Rochester Museum & Science Center. “We make coffee and tea over the fire,” said Andy. “Then we read from one of our primary texts - Walden Pond, Civil Disobedience and A Plea for Captain John Brown - beginning philosophical, dynamic, whole-group discussions that weave through science, history, literary elements, current events and last from 45 minutes to an hour and a half.” Other subjects are explored as well. “We use the Kamana program, among other things, for science,” Andy said. “Every students has a “sit spot” to which they return every day, developing a stronger sense of the patterns in nature and connect to the natural world.” “Students also participate in workshops which are framed by our six curriculum units,” Andy explained. “We provide 20-minute mini lessons that then branch off into more specific student interests.” Students develop their interests through independent research and service learning on Thursdays and Fridays. “Thursday is an indoor day,” said Andy. “Every student completes an independent research project on a subject of interest to them each 6-week unit, encouraging intrinsic motivation and natural curiosity.” On Fridays, students do 2017 - 2018 Walden NY taught by not return to Cumming. Andy Webster & co-teacher/Service Instead, students are sent Learning Coordinator, Janean Shedd. out to their respective placements for their service learning. “From Monday to Wednesday, we look at the problems of the world,”

Andy Webster teaching Project Walden NY students at Cumming Nature Center

explained Andy. “Then, students work with organizations to see how they are currently addressing real world issues.” These service learning projects revolve around the six units, as well. “In our Social Justice unit, for example, we see that society is not fair, and students feel that kind of anger that things are unjust,” Andy shared. “Service learning helps corral that energy and point it towards solving problems in the real world.” In addition, the Walden Project NY uniquely encourages divergent thinking. “We get away from one-size-fits-all education,” said Andy. “There is real value to convergent thinking, which involves narrowing down options to find the most likely possibility. The problem is that it is often the only kind we teach, neglecting divergent thinking, which involves creatively thinking of many possibilities. We encourage everyone to follow their genius.” While Walden Project is not a therapeutic program, it can be a very supportive program for those in need. “Students who are in therapy, feeling like misfits, dealing with anxiety, struggling with depression and feeling bad about themselves in school and those who have become apathetic may really blossom in this type of environment,” said Andy. “We have seen these same kids humming with excitement, happily showing off what they have accomplished because they are proud of themselves and their learning.” The 2018-2019 school year was Walden Project NY’s inaugural year. “Our nine, ‘pioneer’ students really connected with what we are doing, especially the service learning,” said Andy. “They became excited to learn more so that they could be even more involved, actively using the concepts they are learning to affect issues they care about.” There were no issues with credits transferring to the students’ various schools, and Walden Project NY will be accredited when it launches for 2019-2020. “We are currently enrolling for our September session right now,” said Andy. “We start right after Labor Day and continue into midJune. We are planning for 15-16 students, which would be ideal.” Last year, students participated in everything from harvesting maple syrup and growing their own food to studying watershed dynamics, creating portfolios and recording TedTalks. With one Walden Project NY student receiving a full scholarship to college from Walden and another becoming so invested in his service learning project that he now intends to pursue disaster relief as a career, Webster confidently declared Walden Project NY’s first year a success. Commute: Bending over backwards simply to get to work and then get home from work can have an incredibly negative impact on your life. A study from the Office of National Statistics in the United Kingdom found that commuters, especially those who spend between 60 and 90 minutes commuting to work, have lower life satisfaction and lower levels of happiness compared to people who don’t commute. Before accepting a job offer, estimate your commute time to and from the new office and try to determine the impact of that commute on your quality of life.
