I always have great rhubarb. I take good care of it. This year it won’t fill out. It’s mostly tall & spindly. Could it be this bad spring? -Ed S. The most likely reason why your rhubarb is tall and spindly is that it is overcrowded and needs to be divided. It should be divided after about 5 years of growth. The best time to divide is in the early spring, but it can be done in the fall. Dig around the root clump and lift the entire plant. Cut down through the crown between buds, with each division having at least one bud and prefer-

Plant at same depth as the original plant was growing. Another possibility is that due to the very wet spring, if your drainage is poor, your rhubarb may be experiencing crown rot. It damages terminal buds and results in spindly, weak stems. The plant will eventually collapse.

Can peonies be divided, or should they be moved as a whole plant? – Donna Y.

Palmiter’s Garden Nursery in Avon specializes in peonies and can provide information and advice about these beautiful plants.

Peonies really do not like to have their roots disturbed, but if you must move of divide them, the best time to do so is in the fall – September or October. Once divided or moved, they may take two or three years to settle in before they bloom again.

Thank you to the good Samaritan who left a note on our SUV on 6/5 in Wegmans parking lot about the nail in our tire. We do not know who you are, so we cannot thank you personally, but it was very much appreciated. We were able to get it fixed that day and not get a surprise later. So again, thank you! A particular weed and grass killer contains [a chemical] which is said to be carcinogenic to humans. Why is there not a ban on spraying it? After six years of exposure to this chemical, there could be significant factors affecting one’s health. So, why does the landlord keep spraying this chemical around the well? This well is used by the renters daily for everyday needs. What about liability?

My two daughters were outside with their pet rabbit. They were walking outside near the deck when a dog started barking, and a few minutes later, another woman came over to the woman with the dog and asked her if everything was okay. She said everything GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

We rely on our volunteers every day and we want you ALL to know how very much you are appreciated. You are all angels in our eyes. Thank you for being a gift to our community each and every day!

was fine, but the other women asked her why the dog was barking, and she said it was because the dog was nervous because of the two girls standing there. My daughters were not yelling or talking loudly or running around, they were just calmly walking around with the rabbit. The woman had no right to yell at them, telling them to leave. They were not disturbing anyone. If you want the dog to be quiet then take him away from the window so he doesn’t get “nervous” at two girls walking around.

Last Friday, I was at Walmart to purchase a heating pad and was getting into the car while my son returned the wheelchair. Things went bad at that time, and I landed on the ground on my back. A friendly family heard me yelling for help and came to my rescue. A huge thank you to this family who helped me, and God Bless you! ~ Aletha

So-called climate change sounds like some quasiscience in order to drum up more money. Seasonal change is really what it is. It happens all the time, and the Earth will survive. It has for millions of years, anyway. What is making more negative ‘climate change’ are the oodles of wind and solar farms. Nature has survived for eons without solar farms and wind farms, which do not help the problem at all and make it worse. A moratorium should be put in place to stop them from being built.

On Friday, June 14th in the Batavia Kmart parking lot a good Samaritan found an envelope/utility bill payment I had dropped on the ground getting out of my car. They took time out of their day to bring it back to my home. Thank you so much. I appreciate your kindness.

Thank you, Christine and Lisa, for the flowers at the Lima Town Hall and at the 4-corners. They are beautiful!

If you love nature, let nature shine; don’t ruin it with ugly structures. I was surprised to see that vitriolic rant entitled, “Be a Mother,” about the widow of two years. Whoever wrote that is so judgmental and lacking in compassion. I’m sure they think of themselves as a caring Christian. Haven’t they heard “Let him who is without sin cast the first stone?” It has to be tough enough to be a young widow without some nosy neighbor second guessing every parenting decision you make. Shame on whoever wrote that.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Persistent Underarm Odor Can be Minimized

Got drainage problems? Call

---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have underarm odor. I wash daily, use deodorant and change my shirts daily. I use mostly cotton shirts and undershirts. I launder my shirts with soap mixed with bicarbonate sodium (baking soda) to eliminate odor. In spite of all this, deodorants seem to work for few hours and then fade away. What other solutions do you have for this problem, whether it’s what to use for the underarm or what to wash the clothes with? Thanks. -- N.I. ANSWER: Body odor comes mainly from bacteria that grow in the moist areas, like axillae (armpits). Keeping them dry and minimizing bacteria are then the ways to minimize body odor. Antiperspirant, rather than deodorant, is effective at keeping the axillae dryer. Applying at nighttime after shower or bath may be more effective. Occasional use of a topical antibiotic to the axillae can keep bacteria growth down as well. Diet can have a role, too. Sulfur-containing foods like garlic, along with onions and many curries, can cause a strong odor. As far as washing clothes, most detergents do a very good job of removing the odor-causing bacteria. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: I went in for an annual examination with my primary-care doctor, and she took my blood tests in the laboratory. She told me that I have high potassium, 5.5, and had me retake it. I did, and the test came back with a much lower level of 4.3! What could have caused the level to go up so high? Was this due to eating a lot of avocado and yogurt on a daily basis? I was eating a whole avocado in the a.m. for breakfast and a yogurt with apple and peach. Should I be seeing a specialist to recheck it? Please describe potassium and its job, and advise what I should do. -A.V.R. ANSWER: Avocados and yogurt are high-potassium foods, and peaches and apples are medium-potassium foods. However, most people can take in high amounts of potassium without worry, since the kidney is very good at getting rid of potassium if the body doesn’t need it. I more often see low potassium levels, from poor intake or from medications, such as diuretics, which can cause the body to lose potassium. However, some people with kidney disease (especially severe kidney disease) need to carefully watch and limit oral potassium intake. By far the biggest reason for a potassium blood test to come out abnormally high relates to the lab itself. Samples that sit around a long time or that are shaken will have broken blood cells, which release high levels of potassium into the serum, causing false elevations in the lab. If you didn’t change your diet between the two tests, there is no reason to worry at all. Your primary doctor is the right person to see.

DEAR DR. ROACH: Does sunlight make chickenpox blisters appear more quickly? -- S.V.A.

ANSWER: I have heard that, too, but can’t find any evidence that it’s true. The rash of chickenpox certainly will come, even in darkness. Sunlight can worsen scarring from chickenpox, and the affected skin is more susceptible to burning, so those with chickenpox rash should be kept out of the sun. Chickenpox is also very contagious; restrict contact with anyone who hasn’t had it or the vaccine.

Simplify vacations and savor the fun Use a travel agent. Using a travel agent to plan your vacation can remove any stress and anxiety you may feel when planning a trip and juggling the responsibilities of everyday life. Many people choose to book their own trips as a cost-cutting measure. What they don’t realize is that travel agents may be privy to special deals and perks they can pass on to customers. These agents also know the ins and outs of certain resorts and locales. Leaving the legwork in their accomplished hands means all you have to do is show up with your reservations instead of pouring over the minutiae of planning.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF AVOCADOS Avocados can promote healthier bones. Because they’re high in vitamin K, a nutrient that is crucial for bone health, avocados may help reduce a person’s risk of developing osteoporosis, a condition characterized by bones becoming fragile and brittle due to loss of tissue. Vitamin K may help improve the intestinal absorption of calcium. That’s a significant benefit, as calcium deficiency has long been associated with a greater risk for osteoporosis.

FORTIS SCHOOL OF NURSING AT ALL-STATE CAREER SCHOOL LAUNCHES PRACTICAL NURSING PROGRAM Program Meets Underserved Nursing Need in Philadelphia Area (NAPSI)—By 2030, the baby boomer generation, totaling more than 2.1 million in Pennsylvania, will be over 65. Many will require medical care at nonhospital settings such as long-term care facilities and community health centers. Yet, our country’s ability to care for this population will be impacted by the dwindling number of nurses.

AMERICAN CHEESES

In response, All-State Career School, a leading postsecondary institution in Essington, has launched a new Practical Nursing (PN) program to provide a pipeline of support to hospitals and other health care facilities in the South Philadelphia metropolitan area. “One of our goals for this new PN program is to increase the number of well-prepared, professional, caring nurses who can be employed in this community,” said Dr. Sheila Burke, Vice President of Nursing for Education Affiliates. The new Fortis School of Nursing at All-State Career School in Essington is the most recent offering in a network of schools managed by Education Affiliates, Inc., one of the largest nursing education providers in the U.S. The system currently educates over 4,000 nursing students nationwide and operates 29 nursing programs in 10 states. “Southeast Pennsylvania is in dire need of nursing professionals and we’re excited to offer this new program to serve the community,” said Edward Rito, Area Campus President of All-State Career School in Essington. “We look forward to replicating the great success Fortis Institute’s practical nursing programs have experienced at its Scranton campus.” The Fortis School of Nursing at All-State Career School in Essington offers an accredited 60-week practical nursing program. The program was granted initial approval by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing. To learn more about preparing for a career in nursing, contact 610-3621124 for more information. Artist Creates Windows of Opportunity at Local Thrift Shop By Jeff Thomas

M

any have noticed the beautiful window displays for Finders Keepers, a community thrift shop located on the corner of State and Main Streets in Mount Morris. The high traffic intersection is ideal for these caringly created shop windows designed to capture the attention of hundreds of drivers- and walkers-by every day. A busy intersection is also an apt metaphor for the window displays themselves. Many of Finders Keepers’ most talked about windows are realized by local artist Ellen Friedler, in an intersection of her many loves, including thrift, fine art, good humor, and visual storytelling. The shop also serves another of Ellen’s passions: providing work opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. For nearly three decades, Ellen has worked directly with community members with disabilities through employment and the day programs of The Arc of Livingston-Wyoming, a private, not-forprofit agency founded by parents. Finders Keepers is a participant in one of those programs called Hilltop Business Services. Ellen’s list of work responsibilities is long, like her job title: Autism Training & Support Specialist. Although you won’t find the word “window” anywhere in her official job description, somehow she always finds time for them. She has assembled professional, themedriven window displays from Finders Keepers’ constantly changing inventory of donated items for most of the store’s 10-year existence. “Creativity is about problem solving,” Ellen says. “You have to get from A to B, whether it’s me designing a window or a Hilltop worker finding the best way to do a job that fits their abilities. Doing a thrift store window is problem solving with the variables that you have on hand.” Ellen’s sense of ingenuity has fueled many of the area’s most unique window displays, from a scene created for Mount Morris Italian Fest that featured likenesses of such icons as Joe DiMaggio and Sophia Loren to a wedding display that skipped the dress and instead featured the “little touches” that together add up to the most complex, special day in a couple’s life. “The one area that I think is probably not realized by many people looking at the windows is the artistic thought and movement that goes into each one,” says Ellen’s supervisor, Arc Coordinator of Vocational Services Judy Welch. “A lot of the appeal for us as customers is really due to Ellen looking at things, such as where our eyes will naturally be drawn, and using the themes to make us think about more than just the items in it.” That seemingly effortless visual flow is the product of Ellen’s hard work and natural artistic instincts, which she refined while studying Fine and Applied Arts at Rochester Institute of Technology. It’s a skill that is complemented by the attention to detail that treats ordinary thrift store items as more than props. Case in point: for a memorable patriotic display, Ellen recreated a scene from a 1940s home, with a chair left empty for a soldier off to fight in World War II. To Ellen, even the smallest display item can trigger a memory for an everyday window shopper. “I believe that people have the ability to resonate with a look or a storyline,” Ellen Friedler at Finders Keepers.

Finders K ial Da ind Keepers’’ post-Me post-Memorial Day window: “Sheila! We Can Wear White Shoes and Belts Now!

Ellen says. “Individual people will fill in the blanks from their personal experiences. A doily on the back of a chair is enough to resonate with someone. I love experiencing history through everyday things.” If the contents of a retail store window can kindle a sense of nostalgia, then surely a different treatment of that same window can bring about a smile or even laughter. Ellen refers to it as “whimsy” – and she proudly considers it one of her specialties. Anyone who’s seen Ellen’s “New Year’s Hangover” or “Feisty Cat with a Ball of Yarn” windows would be quick to agree.“I think that humor is the universal solvent for connecting people together, as long as it’s kind,” she says, with a smile. Ellen’s good-natured outlook comes in handy when she’s forced to balance her own thrifting instincts with what’s best for the shop window.” I have been thrift storing and antiquing since I was 3 years old,” she says. I know my thrift. It can be a real challenge not to buy things. Believe me; I am definitely capable of buying stuff!” It’s a double-edged sword, and Ellen isn’t the only one affected. Her displays often make items look so appealing that they would fly out of the windows into customers’ personal collections, if certain safeguards weren’t in place. Finders Keepers encourages shoppers to put display items on hold until the next display goes up. And Ellen complements for-sale items with other design elements such as custom banners and signs created specifically for the displays by Hilltop Printshop, a sister business under the Hilltop Business Services umbrella. “I am always amazed by her ability to take items that really don’t look like much and would likely be passed over, put them in a window where customers – Ellen Friedler, Artist have a sense of what they could be and turn the item into a must have,” Judy says. The next display for window shoppers at the intersection of State and Main is yet to be determined, but one thing is clear: Ellen will find inspiration for her next masterpiece as surely as she would track down that next one-of-a-kind thrift shop deal. “Once the idea hits, I feel like a crazed beagle with its nose to the ground,” Ellen says. “I need to sniff it out.” Have something interesting you’d like to share with our readers? ENJOYING THRILLS AT AMUSEMENT PARKS Carousels are favorites for children and adults alike. Riders ride wooden horses and other animals as the carousel moves in a circle. According to the trivia provider Mental Floss, carousels were first used to give horseback riding lessons to Turkish and Arabian cavalry members. Simplify vacations and savor the fun Vacations are a great opportunity for families or individuals to recharge. But especially active vacationers often return from their trips in need of rest, as planning may have taken its toll or schedules loaded with too many activities might have left little time for R&R. Those willing to simplify their vacations may find their excursions provide the rest they need and the energizing boost they can make use of upon returning from their destinations. A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel

Setting The Record Straight: Common Myths About Vacation Rentals (NAPSI)—Vacation rental homes are becoming increasingly popular. In fact, 89 percent of travelers who have never rented a vacation home before would consider it, according to a recent study. However, popular misconceptions prevent some people from doing so. Here are a few facts that can help. Myth #1: More space = a higher price tag. Many travelers assume vacation rentals are more expensive than traditional lodging. Think again: When you break down the price per night and per room compared to traditional accommodations, vacation rentals typically offer better value—plus, you get added living areas. Rental homes can also prove more cost effective when you average in all the convenient amenities, such as kitchens to save money on meals, or washers and dryers to cut down on baggage fees because you can pack less.

* On July 8, 1951, Paris, the capital city of France, celebrates turning 2,000 years old. However, the City of Lights was most likely founded around 250 B.C., when a Gallic tribe known as the Parisii settled an island (Ile de la Cite) in the Seine River, which runs through present-day Paris. * On July 9, 1962, Bob Dylan records "Blowin' in the Wind," although it wouldn't be released for another year. The most well-known version was done by Peter, Paul and Mary, which became a hit. * On July 10, 1985, in Auckland harbor in New Zealand, Greenpeace's Rainbow Warrior sinks after French agents in diving gear plant a bomb on the ship's hull. Although French authorities denied responsibility, a British newspaper later uncovered evidence of French President Francois Mitterrand's authorization of the bombing plan.

Myth #2: I need to have a large group. Vacation rental homes come in all shapes and sizes, from studio units and condos in resort-style communities to larger, private homes with four or more bedrooms. Solo travelers, couples and families alike can enjoy rental homes for the convenience and can find the rightsized home for their needs. Myth #3: I have to stay for at least a week. Many vacation rental homes offer flexibility when it comes to length of stay. Travelers can often find rentals for weekend stays, especially during off-peak travel periods. Myth #4: You have to book far in advance. There is no set time frame for booking a rental home before your trip. While booking further in advance can give you a greater selection to choose from, there are often great last-minute deals in many popular vacation destinations for those who can’t plan as far ahead. Myth #5: If I need help, I’m on my own. This one depends on how you book your rental home. If you book directly with a homeowner through a listing site, you will have to work out any issues directly with the owner. However, if you book through a professional manager, such as Wyndham Vacation Rentals, there is someone available 24/7 to assist you and to serve as a liaison between you and the property owner. Wyndham even offers a “Vacation Rental Bill of Rights” that assures travelers that their expectations will be met. Learn more about vacation rentals at www.VacationDifferently. com. The travel resource offers great tips on family travel, ideas for vacation rental accommodations, and inspiration on a different way to travel. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Weather plays a role in driver safety regardless of what time of year it may be. From wind and rain to snow and ice, travelers routinely navigate roads when conditions are far from ideal. Wet roadways are a common occurrence. The automotive resource AAA advises that wet pavement contributes to nearly 1.2 million traffic accidents each year. Many crashes occur when drivers do not recognize the need to change their driving habits in wet conditions. Mastering driving techniques on slick, water-logged roads can help motorists avoid accidents and injuries. See and be seen: Before they even get behind the wheel, drivers should inspect all headlights and taillights to ensure they are in working order. Replace any bulbs that have burned out, and clean cloudy lens covers. Drivers need to see roadways clearly, so they should make sure their windshields are free of streaks, debris and water. Periodically replacing windshield wiper blades can ensure they’re working optimally when drivers need them most. Slow down and give other motorists space: Slowing down and stopping can take extra time when roads are wet. AAA notes that, with as little as 1/12inch of water on the road, tires have to displace a gallon of water a second to keep the rubber in contact with the street. Driving slowly can make it much easier for vehicles to stop. Plus, driving slowly enables drivers to see obstacles or pedestrians more easily, especially in heavy rains. Exercise caution with puddles and running water: It may be difficult to gauge the depth and ferocity of water flowing in a roadway. Quickly moving water can cause a vehicle to hydroplane or even move a large vehicle. A deep puddle also can affect drivers’ ability to steer or cause vehicles to stall. Take another route rather than risk driving through large puddles or areas where water is flowing on roadways. Skidding: Do not slam on the brakes if a car begins to skid or hydroplane, advise experts. Instead, ease up slowly from the accelerator and then steer the vehicle into the skid or straight. Then accelerate smoothly once more. Sudden, jerky movements when a car begins to skid can exacerbate the situation. Maintain tires: Tire treads should be checked at the start of a new season to ensure the rubber will be able to grip the road. Rotate tires according to the manufacturer’s requirements, or every 5,000 miles. Properly inflated tires will improve traction as well.

HOW TO CONSERVE WATER AT HOME Wash your car at a commercial car wash. Some vehicle owners may enjoy washing their cars at home in their driveways. But getting a car washed at a professional car wash can conserve substantial amounts of water. That’s because many new car wash facilities employ water reclamation systems that reuse water. According to San Diego Car Care, a professional car wash that employs water reclamation technology, each car washed at their facility consumes just nine to 15 gallons of water per wash. That’s a considerable savings compared to washing at home, as the State of Maryland’s Department of the Environment estimates that 100 gallons of water are consumed during a single 10-minute car wash at home using a garden hose.

Entertaining guests is easier when there’s a dedicated space where visitors can feel at home. When furnishing a living room, keep the guest room in mind. A sofa that opens up to a bed or a convertible sectional can be a comfortable place for guests to lay their heads. CONSERVE WATER WHEN TEMPERATURES RISE Spring and summer are synonymous with increased hours of sunlight, warm temperatures and, oftentimes, an increased reliance on water to feed recreational pursuits and lawn and garden needs. The Water Information Program states that 3.9 trillion gallons of water are consumed in the United States each month and the average person uses 176 gallons of water per day. Water conservation may be essential when the risk for weather-related drought looms. Practicing year-round conservation efforts can help ensure smart usage of local watersheds, lakes and reservoirs and help maintain these water sources for years to come. It also helps the average person reduce his or her carbon footprint while saving people a little money along the way.

But even people with plenty of ways to pass their time may find themselves wasting time each day, a phenomenon that seems to be growing. In its 2014 “Wasting Time at Work” survey, Salary.com found that 89 percent of participants acknowledged wasting time at work each day. That marked a sharp increase from a year prior, when 69 percent of workers surveyed reported wasting time at work. Thirty-one percent of workers surveyed admitted wasting roughly 30 minutes per day, while another 31 percent estimated they waste around one hour each day. Perhaps the most surprising finding from the survey was that 4 percent of participants admitted they waste four or more hours, or at least half a typically eight-hour workday, at work each day. Some people might be wasting time out of sheer boredom, but many may be able to trace all those squandered minutes and hours to inefficiency.

SALOME’S STARS ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your Aries leadership qualities can help bring order out of all that confusion, whether it’s on the job or in the home. But be careful to guide, not goad, others into following you. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Applying a more personal view to a job-linked issue could help provide better insight into those persistent problems. Use your keen Taurean logic to cut through the double-talk. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Taking some time off could be the best way to get through that seemingly endless round of demands. You’ll return refreshed and ready to tackle things from a new perspective. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Restoring a sagging professional relationship takes a lot of effort. By all means, state your position. But also make sure you pay close attention to the other person’s point of view. LEO (July 23 to August 22) A hot prospect intrigues the Big Cat, who is always on the prowl for a promising investment. But be careful that this “promise” has a chance of being kept. Check it out more carefully. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A friend could use some of your compassion and concern. If he or she doesn’t ask for help, be sure you step up and make the first move. Also, check out a new career possibility. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You might have difficulty getting your opinions heard because of all the noise being made by the other side. But hang in there. Others should line up with you once they learn the facts. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Offering to help a colleague is commendable. But before you commit your time and effort, check to see if that person’s situation is all that he or she has led you to believe it is. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You soon should be seeing positive results from your recent efforts on behalf of a family member. On another matter, check that you have all the facts regarding a job assignment. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your aspects favor closer family relationships this week. Take time for visits, whether in person, by phone, by mail or in cyberspace. Let them know how important they are to you. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A missed opportunity isn’t always a negative. Maybe your instincts are telling you not to rush into something you “thought” was worthwhile. Make time for family this weekend. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your sense of humor helps you get through a tricky situation. But some stick-in-the-muds might not be so willing to make the changes that you and others agree are necessary. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a gift for making everyone you know -- or even just met -- feel important and welcome in your life. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.
