Dansville’s First Pediatrician, Dr. Joan Flender: Up Close and Personal By Amanda Dudek
P
erched on the edge of her seat, Dr. Joan Flender answers questions with poise, honesty and passion. Her gaze steady, she has a reputation for making others feel heard, valued. In 1981, Dr. Flender, moved to Dansville, becoming, quite intentionally, its first ever pediatrician. “My husband worked in Rochester,” said Dr. Flender. “We drew an hour circle around Rochester and looked for anywhere there was a hospital.” Both Brockport and Canandaigua had pediatricians at the time, but Dansville did not. Dr. Flender decided she would be the first. “Plus, it’s gorgeous here,” she quipped. Raised in New York City and Long Island, Dr. Flender always enjoyed science and working with people. “I was a psychology major,” explained Dr. Flender. “I took the MCATS because all of my friends were taking them.” Dr. Flender went on to Cornell Medical College then U of R for her residency. It was there she felt drawn to pediatrics and child development. “I loved seeing a child at six months, then again at six years, watching the child grow,” she said. “My goal in life was to make a difference,” explained Dr. Flender. “I realized the best way to do that would be to move to a small town where they had never had a pediatrician and to try to improve health care for kids.” “I joined Tricounty Family Medicine,” Dr. Flender recalled. “It was wonderful.” Her first patients were referrals from the school. “The first few children we saw were quite sick,” said Dr. Flender. “Perhaps because they were not seen regularly or because they hadn’t had a pediatrician here before.” Pediatricians spend three years focusing solely on children and teens. “We got the checkups going,” said Dr. Flender. “We established connections with the school, daycare... anything that has to do with kids.” In 1988, Dr. Flender started Stony Brook Pediatrics and was joined by Dr. Diane Rapp and Dr. Susan Slowinski. There are now 6 providers at offices in both Dansville and Geneseo. “I love what I do,” Dr. Flender reflected. “Would I do it again? Yes. I love the cross generational interaction here. In the city, people hang out with others their age. Here, it is more family-oriented and multigenerational.” Dr. Flender enjoys this within her own family. Married almost forty years, she raised her three sons in Dansville, and one of them, along with his wife, is currently raising his own family in the very home in which he was raised. Dr. Flender also takes a more personal approach to health care. “I will still do house visits,” she said. “Also, if I have bad news, I am not going to give that to you over the phone. I am going to come to your home. Sadly, we have had patients pass away, and some of those experiences have bonded me with families the most because we do it together if need be.” Little wonder Dr. Flender is beloved by many Dansville families. “My mother and I believe in ‘Be nice,’” she explained. “In my practice, we try to be helpful, pleasant and not get in people’s way when they are raising their kids.” “We have expanded hours and leave our phones on. When can working people make a phone call?” she asked. “On their lunch break! We accommodate them. We don’t let those things that bother us happen to our patients.” Dr. Flender also takes an active role in the community, serving on the Board of Health and on the board at Noyes. “I’ll go to school

meetings or observe a kid in school, and we don’t charge for that,” she said. “It’s just part of what we do. We are involved with the school and have been the physicians, free-of-charge, for Rotary Camp since 1981.” “We have our own foundation, as well,” added Dr. Flender. “Some people know about it and contribute to it. When a child becomes very ill, sometimes, a parent has to stay home to care for that child for several weeks or months. We quietly pay a couple of months of their mortgage, help out with gas money or other needs. We just tell them to pay it forward.” “It is a career for me, not just a 9-5,” said Dr. Flender. “I didn’t want to have a strict divide between work and home. I wanted it to merge. I managed to make that work, and I am very happy.” Dr. Flender reads two science magazines and several medical journals every week, too. “It is a passion of mine, and I love it,” she said. “One of my great fears is not knowing everything!” Although Dr. Flender now heads south each winter, she does not yet see retirement on her horizon. “Medicine and science excite me,” she said. “There have been amazing changes. In 1981, it was basically an infectious disease practice. We were seeing all sorts of things that now, with vaccines, we don’t see anymore.” “Over time, we have become more focused on behavioral concerns,” she said. “We now have the luxury to focus on that - Dr. Joan Flender because we are not worried about children dying all the time, which is truly lovely. Kids live longer and healthier than they ever have.” When asked what she would say to young people interested in entering the medical field, Dr. Flender didn’t hesitate. “Do it,” she answered. “It is such a privilege to take care of patients and for families to let you participate in their lives. It is just a lovely thing to do to help people feel better and be with them through both good and difficult times.”
My goal in life was to be able to make a difference in the world, and in the medical field, I can make that difference.

CARE FOR TOOLS PROPERLY Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.
ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Be careful not to allow the backers of a new financial “deal” to pull the wool over the Lamb’s eyes. It could hold fewer plusses and more negatives than you were first led to believe. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) It’s a good idea to finish all incomplete tasks so that you can devote your attention to next week’s projects. The weekend could hold surprises for romantic Fernandas and Ferdinands. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A workplace suggestion you made a while ago that you might have forgotten could come back with a request to turn it from idea to reality. Your social life picks up considerably this weekend. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Someone from the past could return with an intriguing opportunity for a future project. Check into it, by all means. But don’t neglect your current responsibilities in the meantime. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Keeping your claws sheathed and using good humor instead to counter someone who’s badmouthing the Big Cat isn’t easy. But it’s the best way to avoid more problems down the line. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A workplace situation could improve if you’re less critical and more supportive of those who are, after all, trying to do their best. Let them know you’re there to help when necessary. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A new job offer might not carry all the benefits you’re seeking. Make sure you know what you’re entitled to, what is off the table and what is negotiable before you make a decision. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A social obligation you would rather get out of could hold some surprisingly positive aspects. Why not go and see for yourself? A family member makes a curious request. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Before tackling that new project awaiting you at home or on the job, take time out for some much-deserved pampering to help lift your spirits and restore your energy levels. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your social calendar begins to fill up more quickly than you expected. And that’s great. You deserve to enjoy some good fun after so much time spent on serious matters. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A domestic situation continues to improve, thanks to all the tender, loving concern you’ve shown. A colleague makes a questionable move that you might want to check out sooner rather than later. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A sudden turn in a romantic relationship calls for both a rational and passionate response. Keep the love level high, but also find out why the problem arose in the first place. BORN THIS WEEK: You often set high standards for others. But to your credit, you set the same expectations for yourself. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel
Save Energy And Money (NAPS)—Don’t let window replacement become a “pane” in your wallet. There’s a disconnect between saving money on energy with window replacements, according to government agencies. In fact, they found it may take decades to recoup the cash spent on the installation of new, energy-efficient windows. The Problem The assessed value of adding 20 new energyefficient windows in California, for example, may range from $10,220 to $18,580, based on a 2019 building assessors manual listing $511 to $929 for each window. Annual energy savings for the replacement of existing windows in a home are from $27 to $111 for dual-pane windows and $126 to $465 for single-pane windows, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. This means it may take decades to financially justify window replacements based on energy savings alone. An Answer Fortunately, there’s an alternative. Window films offer advanced energy savings and other benefits and can be quickly installed at a fraction of the cost of replacement windows, often with a return on investment in under three years. “Window films professionally installed on structurally sound single- or double-pane windows may reduce energy consumption by as much as 30 percent, while the installation cost may be 91.5 percent less than putting in new windows,” explained Darrell Smith of the nonprofit International Window Film Association. Learn More For further facts and stats about saving money and energy, go to www.iwfa.com.
MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel On Aug. 27, 1967, Brian Epstein, manager of the Beatles, is found dead of an accidental drug overdose in his Sussex, England, home. In 1962, Epstein was hired in a deal that gave him 25 percent of the band’s gross earnings for five years. On Aug. 28, 1917, 10 women suffragists are arrestedas they picket the White House to demand that President Woodrow Wilson support a Constitutional amendment guaranteeing women the right to vote. After the jailed women went on a hunger strike and had to be force fed for months, Wilson finally agreed to a suffrage amendment. On Aug. 26, 1939, the first televised Major League baseball game is broadcast. Announcer Red Barber called the game between the Cincinnati Reds and the Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field in New York. The video coverage was somewhat crude. There were only two stationary camera angles.
To save money and energy, have window film installed instead of replacement windows. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Confusion Over Women’s Heart Attack Symptoms ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: My question is about symptoms for women’s heart attacks. I have always heard that symptoms for women can be much different from men’s. Instead of the chestclutching, sharp pain that men can have, I have read that women’s symptoms can be any of these: heartburn or indigestion; pain in the jaw, neck, shoulders, back, one or both arms; fatigue and troubled sleep; dizziness and nausea; or extreme anxiety. Are you KIDDING me? I am a healthy, active 63-year-old woman. I have had all of these symptoms at one time or another. If I acted every time I had one of these symptoms, I would be at the doctor’s office every day. How is one to know which symptoms to take seriously and act on immediately, and which to wait a few days to see if it is temporary? -- J. ANSWER: I have seen many letters similar to yours. The confusing problem is that it’s true: In women, heart attack symptoms and the symptoms of angina before a heart attack can include all of those vague symptoms. The same is true of men as well, although it’s more likely for women than for men to have symptoms other than the classic left-sided chest discomfort (people are much more likely to describe angina as “discomfort” or “pressure” than “pain”). So your question is entirely valid: How do you know when to take common symptoms seriously? The first thing I would say is that the greater your risk for heart disease, the more seriously you should take any symptom. Age, family history of heart disease, high blood pressure and cholesterol, lack of regular physical exercise and diabetes are among the most important risk factors. The second thing I would say is to take new symptoms seriously. If you never get heartburn, for example, then heartburn at age 63 should prompt concern. Third, context matters. Symptoms such as nausea or jaw pain that occur with exercise -- even carrying a bag of groceries or walking up stairs -- is definitely a reason to talk to your doctor. Most women don’t know that heart disease remains their No. 1 killer, far outstripping breast cancer (or any cancer). Both women and men need to take even vague symptoms seriously, especially if the symptoms are new, exertional or if the person has several risk factors. As a primary-care doctor, I’d rather see my patient for her concerns that symptoms may be heart disease than see her in the ICU with a heart attack.
TRY A TASTE OF HISPANIC HERITAGE (NAPSI)—National Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to acknowledge the history, culture and contributions of the people of Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America, and Spain. One of the best ways to celebrate, many say, is with food. Making that easy is one restaurant chain that’s having a year-round love affair with Latin and Hispanic cuisine. Long known for its authentic Tex-Mex roots, Church’s Chicken®/Texas Chicken® has spent years championing the commemorative period—which runs from September15 to October 15th—on a global stage. The first Hispanic influence on the company’s menu was the jalapeño pepper—the very first side item ever offered at the restaurant chain. The peppers were added to the menu due to a San Antonio tradition of squeezing their juice over various foods to give them a south-of-theborder style “kick” of heat and spice. The restaurant’s sister brand, Texas Chicken, features the Mexicana Burger on menus worldwide. This tasty chicken burger is a fiesta of tastes and textures, with a juicy hand-battered chicken breast fillet that’s topped “taco style” with cheese, fresh lettuce, tomato, spicy mayo, crunchy tortilla chips and chopped onions.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have diverticulosis. At one time I was told not to eat nuts. I have since read that eating nuts is OK. What is your take? Also, are chia seeds safe? -- E.M. ANSWER: There are two answers to this question. The first comes from clinical research, and a very large trial showed that nut and popcorn consumption tended to protect against diverticulitis and diverticular bleeding. This may be due to the high fiber content, recommended in people with diverticula. So most experts allow their patients with diverticulosis to eat nuts and seeds, including chia seeds. The second is practical experience. If someone has had clinical diverticulitis after eating nuts and seeds, especially if it happens repeatedly, it makes sense not to do so.

These documents are easy to find online and they all list slavery, the economics of slavery, and the denial of the expansion of slavery into the western territories as primary reasons for leaving the Union.

Not only are the costs for each program affordable, but the staff is always so friendly and helpful during their camps! They are great role models for our kids as well! Very proud to live in such a great community that provides awesome activities for the kids in the summer with a very friendly and hands-on staff! Keep up the great work! See you next summer!
with our society, and we shouldn’t waste our time over something that brings the community together. Worst Fast Food Ever! I occasionally go to a fast food restaurant in [local town]. I always go through the drive thru. I would like to point out how consistent they are with their orders...consistently wrong. I have yet to receive a complete correct order. I ordered six items and paid for six items. There were exactly four. My boyfriend ordered a hamburger, and when he got it home it had no meat on it. My coffee was served cold. We’ve ordered and emphasized repeatedly, “no cheese,” only to have said item dripping in cheese. It is so hard to comprehend. Things never used to be this bad. [local county]. When you go into a place of business, you would think that you would be well taken care of. Not there! Three employees ignored my family as we stood there, waiting several minutes to be served. They were standing around off to the side of the cash register, not acknowledging our existence. Then, one employee looked right at us and turned back to the others without saying anything. That same employee had an extra large drink right in front of the register in full view of the customers. The worst part is this is the third time that we have had an awful experience at this place. It has the most unprofessional employees that I have seen in a long time.

ACROSS TAKE A COURSE IN DORM SAFETY
1
College students have a few different living options at their disposal, but many opt for dormitory living, as it is one of the more convenient and popular boarding options, particularly for out-of-town students. Thousands of post-secondary students pack up their belongings and move away from home in the pursuit of an education, and parents want to do what they can to ensure their college-aged kids are safe. For many students, college represents the first time they will live anywhere other than the homes they grew up in. Dorm life can be an exciting adventure, but it can also be one that may open new college students up to inherently risky situations. While students should look forward to fun and excitement at school, it’s also important for them to be prepared for what lies ahead at college and in dorm life - and to take the proper safety precautions. Use common sense and trust your instincts with regard to dorm safety. Make college memories good ones by emphasizing caution.

Does back to school mean you have time and love to share? Looking to earn extra income? BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Make sure you’re getting enough sleep. Failing to get adequate sleep can have an adverse impact on your career. According to the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School, failure to get enough sleep, even for just one night, can impair a person’s ability to function by affecting his or her ability to focus and access high-level cognitive functions. A panel of experts from sleep, anatomy and physiology, as well as pediatrics, neurology, gerontology and gynecology convened by the National Sleep Foundation in 2015 recommended adults between the ages of 26 and 64 get between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. Make a concerted effort to get more sleep if you’re falling short of those recommended guidelines.

Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.
