Funeral Planning: Don’t Be Rushed

One life event we don’t want to think about having to do for a loved one is planning a funeral. But sometimes we must, and it can be stressful and loaded with the potential to be scammed in some way.

A small amount of help is coming. e Federal Trade Commission wants online funeral pricing. And it makes sense. When you need to organize a funeral, emotions are running high. You won’t be at your best when it comes to thinking about pricing and services.

Back in 1984, the FTC created the Funeral Rule, but it only requires funeral homes to show lists of the prices of caskets and any outer burial containers, such as a grave liner. And it was only required that a potential customer be given those prices in person, certainly not by phone. To make it worse, funeral homes only had to show pictures or the item itself a er the prices were disclosed.

By then, of course, you were at the funeral home, unhappy and sad and stressed. e last thing you wanted to do is treat it like a car purchase and shop around. So you signed the paperwork on the spot, possibly paid too much and maybe didn’t get the items and services you wanted.

ere are a few ways to ensure that your vulnerability at that time isn’t exploited.

Before you leave the house to organize a funeral, go online to check local funeral home websites. ey might be among the very few to actually post pricing and services.

Take someone with you.

Get the price list (in writing) of what the funeral home o ers.

Before you sign any paperwork, contact the Funeral Consumers Alliance (funerals.org) and get their advice. ere’s a group in every state. On their website, click on “Consumers” and scroll down to “Don’t Know Where To Begin? Start Here.”

Remember: Take your time.

SIGHTS, SOUNDS AND SYMBOLS OF ST. PATRICK’S DAY

St. Patrick’s Day celebrants who are not of Irish descent and/or those who have never visited Ireland may not know it, but the live music they may hear when entering a pub on St. Patrick’s Day is an integral part of the fabric of Irish culture. An Irish Seisiún typically finds a group of musicians gathered in a pub to play traditional Irish music, oftentimes while seated at a table among their audience. While many pubs reserve stage areas for their musicians on St. Patrick’s Day, the spirit of seisiún is still present, as musicians often interact with the audience.

Jane Conrad Towner

March 3, 2023 ere are many things Jane was passionate about. She loved history, especially local history. She loved animals, nature, gardening, and crafting of all sorts. Most of all, she loved her family.

Jane ConradTowner passed away unexpectedly on March 3, 2023 at Nicholas H. Noyes Memorial Hospital with her husband and children by her side. She was ten days shy of celebrating her 76th birthday.

Jane was born in Bath, NY on March 13, 1947. She is predeceased by her parents, Stuart and Mildred (Bolster) Conrad Strobel, step-dad, Lawrence (Stan) Strobel and infant brother, Gary Stuart Conrad. Jane is survived by her loving husband, Ronald of 57 years; her children, Rick (Christine) Towner of Arkport, Ronda (Steven) Sick of Cohocton, Ryan (Meredith) Towner of Cohocton; and grandchildren, Brianna, Bradley, Dylan, and Samantha. Jane is also survived by her brother, Jim (Louise) Conrad of Mead, CO; nieces, Jessica (Jason) LaMere of Lafayette, CO, Jennifer (John) Philipson of Arvada, CO; and a great-niece and great-nephew.

A lifelong resident of Cohocton, Jane was an active member of the Cohocton Historical Society for many years. She was instrumental in the renovation of the Larrowe House as well as being the driving force behind the creation of the accompanying Victorian garden. Jane loved animals. She never had a pet that was not a rescue of some sort. Whether she sought them out (like her beloved Princess) from her favorite Pekingese rescue organization or whether they found their way to her, she gave them all a loving and safe forever home. Riding through the woods with Ronnie (and of course Princess) on the side-by-side was one of Jane’s favorite pastimes. e peaceful beauty of the wooded hills with her lifelong love by her side was a constant source of joy. She enjoyed taking pictures of these beautiful moments and sharing them with family and friends.

Jane had a hand for all things crafty and was a talented artist. She would create amazing wreaths and wall hangings out of scraps that any other person would have thrown away. Painting, ceramics, sewing, you name it...she loved it all. She took that creative air and turned it into a thriving business, operating out of the Davis House in Cohocton for many years.

Most of all, Jane loved her family. Spending time with her husband, children, and grandchildren was by far her greatest joy, whether it be trips to the casino with Ronda or to the Christmas Story house with Rick. From large family gatherings to spending an hour in the morning chatting with Ryan, all were moments she held dear to her heart and she will be sorely missed.

Per Jane’s request, services will be held for immediate family only. In lieu of owers, donations can be made to the Zion Lutheran Cemetery, c/o Mary Lindsey, 63137 State Rte. 415, Cohocton, NY 14826 and Mapleview Cemetery, c/o John Sick, 10950 Cty. Rd. 92, Wayland, NY 14572, or the Barn Cat Outreach Inc. (barncatoutreach@gmail.com), moving to a permanent location Cohocton.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Walter E. Baird & Sons Funeral Home in Wayland.
