DID YOU KNOW ? Exercise is a great w ay to maintain a healthy mind and body. M any people begin a new year by making resolutions to lose w eight or build musc le. Too often, how ever, men and w omen get stuck in an exercise rut, follow ing the same exercise routine w eek after w eek. Not only can this be boring, fitness experts advise that it’s nec essary to c hange an exercise routine periodically to continue to see results. It’s one reason w hy many fitness clubs unveil new classes every few w eeks. Just w hen you master the choreography of a class, it’s time to change! W ith repetition, the body adapts and grow s accustomed to the routine, using less energy as a result. That can affect your ability to lose w eight. Changing your w orkout forces your body to w ork harder, producing better results. If you exercise w ith a trainer, discuss w ays to modify your normal routine to surprise your body. Inc reased intensity, interval training, adding sprints to running, taking different classes, or even increasing the frequency of your w orkouts may do the trick.

Gratitude Finland has been rated the world’s most “happiest” country. Connection with nature, community and simplicity are three of the major factors cited as to the Finnish quality of life. However, there is an over-riding factor that they’ve learned that stands out for them and perhaps for us - gratitude. To quote: “The Nordic countries are united in their embrace of curbed aspirations for the best possible life. This mentality is famously captured in the Law of Jante -- a set of commandments believed to capture something essential about the Nordic disposition,” he explains. They include: “You’re not to think you are anything special” and “You’re not to imagine yourself better than we are.” Which, as Savolainen points out, is pretty much the opposite of America’s endless pursuit of personal and national exceptionalism. This is a great time of year to take stock of what we all have and be grateful. Amen.

HOW COMMUNITIES BENEFIT WHEN CONSUMERS SHOP LOCAL Lines are short. Waiting in long lines for checkout or to pick up merchandise ordered online can drain consumers’ energy and contribute to stress. Local businesses tend to have short lines and small crowds, which can lead to a more pleasant shopping experience.

Terry’s Two Decades of Dedication: A Glimpse into Wild Wings, Inc. and the Passion for Nature BY SUZIE WELLS
N
estled on the edge of Mendon Ponds Park, Wild Wings Inc. stands as a beacon of hope for injured and non-releasable birds of prey. With both the iconic bird of prey facility and the Mendon Ponds Park Nature Center, this not-for-profit organization has an incredible team of volunteers and staff helping make a profound impact on the community. At its helm is Terry, Executive Director, whose dedication to wildlife and nature has spanned two decades. Terry’s journey with Wild Wings began 20 years ago, driven by a shared passion for animals and “my son and I wanted to volunteer with animals because of our interest in birds.” Originally from Irondequoit, now residing in Henrietta, Terry’s connection to the community has deepened over the years, committed to connecting people with the natural world to help foster a greater appreciation for it. Terry emphasizes the crucial role Wild Wings plays in wildlife conservation, reflecting that, “The animals at Wild Wings would be euthanized due to their injuries if not placed at an organization like Wild Wings. We are able to care for them, give them a second chance at life, and educate the public about their species and the environment.”
With around 40 dedicated volunteers, Wild Wings thrives on the support of its community. Daily operations involve the feeding and cleaning of animals and their enclosures, coupled with ongoing facility maintenance. The tireless efforts of volunteers ensure that the organization fulfills its mission.
For Terry, every day at Wild Wings brings new adventures. The eclectic mix of caring for animals, providing educational programs, and the dynamic nature of the work keeps him engaged. Terry’s favorite moments are those spent educating the public, especially children, witnessing the joy on their faces as they encounter animals up close.
Addressing common questions from the public, Terry underscores the importance of understanding an animal’s story. Each resident at Wild Wings has a tale of injury, whether from a car collision or gunshot wound. These creatures, permanently injured and non-releasable, live out their lives as educational ambassadors, offering invaluable lessons about the resilience of wildlife.
“Seeing the curiosity and interest sparked in them is rewarding, and hopefully, it ignites a lifelong passion for learning about nature,” Terry shares, emphasizing the transformative power of firsthand wildlife encounters. However, the journey is not without its challenges. Wild Wings operates without funding from Monroe County, relying on public support through donations, fundraisers, and fees for special events. The financial sustainability of the organization is an ongoing concern, requiring constant effort and community involvement. Wild Wings’ impact on the community is profound. The organization, true to its mission, does not charge admission, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to learn about nature. Visitors often contribute either monetarily or by donating items from the organization’s wish list, contributing to the continuous care of the animals.
Spreading the word about the organization is equally vital, as Terry notes that some visitors to the park may not be aware of the facility.
Terry encourages a hands-off approach to wild animals unless they are injured. Seeking help from licensed wildlife rehabbers ensures the best chance of successful rehabilitation and release. Terry’s hope is that everyone develops a greater appreciation for animals and the environment, fostering a culture of respect for wildlife and the natural world. As Wild Wings continues to evolve, Terry remains at the forefront, steering the organization towards greater heights. Terry’s two decades of unwavering commitment stand as a testament to the transformative power of education, compassion, and community involvement in the realm of wildlife conservation. Through Wild Wings, Terry continues to inspire generations to come, leaving an indelible mark on the landscape of environmental education and preservation.
“We typically host 300+ programs each year, ranging from school visits to special events like owl prowls and bat walks. These programs not only raise awareness but also generate funds crucial for the wellbeing of our animals,” Terry explains.

COMMON TRIGGERS FOR HEADACHES
Think about baking foods. Baking is handy for more than breads and desserts. Baking is one method of cooking that may not require the addition of fat. Meats that are baked can be placed on top of a rack, so that excess fat drips off and is contained in the bottom of the pan.
Smoking: Even nonsmokers can suffer from smoking-related headaches. The Cleveland Clinic reports that nicotine, which is the primary ingredient in tobacco products, may stimulate pain-sensitive nerves as it passes through the back of the throat. That stimulation contributes to headaches in some people, including the people smoking as well as those around them who are exposed to secondhand smoke. Avoiding tobacco and urging smokers around you to quit or to avoid smoking in your presence may reduce instances of headache.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Hot Flashes Persist Well Past Menopause and Thyroidectomy
Serving Our Community for over 20 years. Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology
--DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 81 and had a thyroidectomy in 2017.
Sue DeBruyne, Au.D. Doctor of Audiology
Accepting New Patients.
My whole thyroid gland was removed. I also had a little bit of cancer. I have started to get hot flashes again. I had originally been on thyroid medicine before and after surgery. Then I was put on levothyroxine and decided to try NP Thyroid. I was doing better on NP Thyroid, then started getting the hot flashes again. At this point, for several reasons, I would rather stay on NP Thyroid for the time being. I was wondering if there is anything I can take for hot flashes? Years ago, in my 50s, I took estrogen, which helped, but this is a different time. I have spoken with other people who are also having hot flashes again. -- Anon. ANSWER: Hot flashes are common -- about 75% of women in North America will experience them around the time of menopause. It’s not uncommon for hot flashes to go away, then return, but I personally haven’t seen them recur after 30 or so years. I’d be concerned that there may be another cause for them, which brings me to your thyroid. Elevated levels of thyroid hormone can cause sensations very similar to hot flashes. One reason that I, along with most endocrinologists, recommend against products like NP Thyroid is because most of those products come from pigs. There are two thyroid hormones: thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). Humans have a different ratio of T3 and T4 than pigs do, with T4 getting converted into the active form, T3. T3 is then quickly broken down, so if it’s used, it needs to be dosed twice daily. As a result, if a person takes NP Thyroid, their thyroid levels are too high during one part of the day and too low during another. This isn’t good for anyone; the “high times” not only cause hot flashes, but also predispose people to atrial fibrillation. But it’s particularly a problem in a person with a history of thyroid cancer, where we want the thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH, the hormone in the pituitary gland that regulates the activity of the thyroid gland) to be on the lower side. If the thyroid blood levels get low in the afternoon/evening when the T3 in NP Thyroid is gone, that can theoretically increase the risk of cancer recurrence as the TSH rises in response. So, in my opinion, you should be on levothyroxine, not NP Thyroid. (I do have a handful of patients who take levothyroxine and also take T3 twice daily. Some people are unable to convert T4 to T3 efficiently.) Estrogen is the most effective treatment for hot flashes, but it increases the risk of heart disease when used by women more than 10 years away from menopause. I don’t normally prescribe it to a woman in her 80s. However, there is a new medication called fezolinetant (Veozah), which is highly effective and reduced hot flashes by 93% in a trial. My only patient on it so far has reported 100% cessation of her hot flashes. There are other rare causes of hot flashes, including tumors that secrete substances, such as carcinoid tumors, and tumors that secrete adrenalin-like hormones (pheochromocytomas).

Keep track of your progress. Keep a resolutions journal or start a blog that allows you to write about your efforts. If your goal is to pay down debt, make a spreadsheet that tracks your progress. That spreadsheet might be more motivational than simply seeing a loan or credit card balance gradually reduce on your monthly statement. Writing about your trials and errors can help others and also provide a great way for you to explore your approach and tinker with it to ensure your ultimate success.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Aggressive Dogs Keep Owner Away From the Dog Park
Penny Saver
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’ve had to change the time of day that I visit the local dog park, because a new neighbor brings his two huge, aggressive dogs each morning at the same time as I do. They charge other humans, chase and snarl at other dogs, and make it impossible for other dogs to socialize calmly. The neighbor does nothing to control them and tells other owners that it’s their fault that his dogs are acting aggressive. To prevent injury to my dog (or myself), I now wait until after work to go. But this is inconvenient for everyone in the neighborhood. How do I address this problem? -- Dog Mom in New York DEAR DOG MOM: You’re doing the right thing by changing the time that you bring your dog to the park. It’s important to remove a dog from a situation you perceive as potentially dangerous or traumatic for them, and protecting them from harm. That’s only the first step, however. The new dogs are terrorizing other dogs within the park, making life miserable for them and their owners. It’s not fair, nor is it right. Dog parks within a city or town typically have rules of conduct posted at each entrance, but sometimes they’re vague. It’s up to each owner to properly train and socialize their dogs, and to keep them away from the park if they can’t control rough play, aggression or reactivity. Report the problem to the organization in charge of maintaining the dog park. This may be a community group or the municipal parks department. Contacting animal control is another option. Write down the dates and times that incidents have occurred. If there is no active community group for the dog park, consider starting one so that owners can air their grievances and work out problems as a group. H(c) 2023 King Features Synd., Inc.

By reading the scriptures I am so renewed that all nature seems renewed around me and with me. The sky seems to be a pure, a cooler blue, the trees a deeper green. The whole world is charged with the glory of God and I feel fire and music under my feet. ~Thomas Merton

Notice of Democratic Caucus Village of Dansville A Caucus of the enrolled Democratic voters in the Village of Dansville will be held on Wednesday, January 24th, 2024, 6:30pm at 3 School St., Dansville, NY 14437.
DID YOU KNOW? According to Donate Life America, 39,700 organ transplants from 19,300 donors brought new life to patients and their families in 2019. Nearly 60 percent of the more than 100,000 men, women and children awaiting lifesaving organ transplants are from multicultural communities. Potential transplant recipients who identify as African American or Black make up the largest percentage from such communities, accounting for 29 percent of the people from multicultural communities currently waiting for an organ transplant. Hispanics/Latinos (20 percent), Asian Pacific Islanders (9 percent), and American Indians/Alaska Natives (1 percent) are other groups with significant amounts of people currently awaiting a transplant.
The purpose of said Caucus is to nominate candidates for the following office(s) (or any office that may become vacant) to be voted upon at the General Election on Tuesday, March 19th, 2024.
VILLAGE TRUSTEE (UNEXPIRED TERM) Respectfully Submitted, Jane Petti and Quinn Golden, Democratic Committee Co-Chairs Paid for by the North Dansville Democratic Committee

HOW TO M AKE OLDER HOM ES M ORE ENERGY EFFICIENT Add insulation. M any older homes are poorly insulated. But according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, adding insulation can reduce energy costs by as much as 50 percent. Installing insulation can be tricky, especially if insulation w as not originally included in your home, as is sometimes the case w ith older homes. Insulation can become damp and prove ineffective if installed improperly. Damp insulation also may contribute to mold grow th and rot in the home’s framing. Older homes may be lacking adequate insulation around attics, craw l spaces, basements, heating and cooling ducts, and w ater pipes. Cover your w ater heater w ith an insulated w ater heater blanket so the heater retains more heat and consumes less energy to heat the w ater. Page 23

Improving traction around the house also can minimize falls. Throw rugs and runners can be made more secure with nonslip rubber backings. Bath rugs can reduce slipping on wet surfaces in the bathroom. Also, nonslip mats can be used inside of showers and bathtubs. Use shoe trays to reduce puddling from melting snow or rain runoff in entryways. Mop up spills quickly, and consider the use of matteor textured-finished flooring to improve stability underfoot. Promptly remove snow and ice from driveways and walkways. For those who live in cold climates, heated concrete can help melt precipitation before it accumulates.
COLD W EATHER W ILDLIFE IN HOM ES BOOSTS DISEASE AND PROPERTY DAM AGE RISKS M any people may practice the “ love thy neighbor” creed, but w hen it comes to four-legged w ildlife su ch as raccoons, squirrels, and opossum that often seek refuge in yards and homes w hen outdoor temperatures dip and food sources become scarce, they are best kept at an arm’s length. As community development has thin ned natural habitats and forced these critters into residential areas and lessened their fears of people , the National Pest M anagement Association (NPM A) has found that many areas of the country continue to report incre ased encounters w ith nuisance w ildlife. “ W hile it can be a unique experience to spot w ildlife in neighborhoods, these animals should be disc ouraged from taking up residence,” advises M issy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs for the NPM A. “ Not only can they damage property, many are vectors of disease, most notably rabies.” According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 40,000 people are exposed t o rabies each year, a viral infection passed through the bite and saliva of an infected mammal. Raccoons, fox es, skunks, coyotes and bats are the most commonly reported animals infected w ith rabies. Because of the risks a ssociated w ith these pests, homeow ners should take extra precautions to protect against them.

Here’s a Tip * If you lose a contact lens, you can try turning off the lights and using a flashlight held perpendicular to the floor. They sort of reflect the light, and as you move the beam of light across the floor, it will flash. This has helped me many times. I am a little clumsy when I put my contacts in. Thanks! -- R.E. in South Carolina * Great diet control tip: When serving dinner, portion out the meal, then pack up the leftovers right away. You won’t be as tempted to go back and have seconds, nor stuff a few more mouthfuls in when cleaning up later. * I have a medicine that I take with every meal. Surprisingly, it’s difficult to remember whether I took it already when I’m eating on the go or out with friends. I keep small containers in my purse labeled “lunch” and “dinner,” each with one pill inside. Before I eat, I look in the container. If a pill is there, it means I forgot to take it. Then I refill the container when I get home and it’s ready for next time. (c) 2024 King Features Synd., Inc.

We find comfort in knowing he is reunited with his wife Candy. David and Candy were married August 18, 1995 and celebrated over 27 years together prior to Candy passing away in May of 2023. David was born August 29, 1950 in Wayland the son of Daniel and Mary (Carney) Brownell. He grew up in Wayland, graduated from Wayland Central School and has remained a life resident of the area. One meal that will be missed by his grandchildren is his sloppy Joes. David and Candy enjoyed their winters at Whisper Creek and Mouse Mountain, where they are missed greatly. His siblings: Pauline, Johnny, Paul, Andy, Katie, Annie and Mary. Edward was predeceased by his wife, Mary-Louise, his parents, siblings and stepson, John Adams. Edward (Eddie) graduated with a GED in Lithography in High School before enlisting in the U.S. Army. He lived in North Carolina - Fort Bragg. He was a war veteran corporal from age 19-22 years old and had many stories of his time there. We are very grateful for his years of service and the support he’s received over the years with the VA. He met Mary-Louise at age 15 and they built a beautiful life together. Edward was a loving husband, stepfather, grandfather and greatgrandfather who will be dearly missed by all his remaining family and friends. Edward’s step-daughter, Deborah Ann Raymond (Adams) of Canada; his grandchildren, Mark (Diane) Raymond, Todd Raymond, Scott (Cynthia) Raymond, Rene (Tyler) Simpson, Nichole Raymond (Brenn), and Elysia Viets. His great-grandchildren, Aryanna, Ayvra, Rory, Ryleigh, Hailey, Cooper, Kaden, and Nathan. Deborah loved Eddie as if he were her own father, and was with him for his last month. Edward loved baseball and bowling. He enjoyed going out with friends and breakfast was his favorite meal. He built the house he’d lived in for the past 47 years in 1976 in Naples, New York. He had his own construction business Ed-Mar Construction which stood for Edward and Mary-Louise, his late love. Eddie loved working with his hands in his shop, wood working, working on vehicles, cutting his few acres of grass with the push mower, shoveling snow and all the upkeeps of living the acreage life (he owned 2 riding mowers). Ed was always a hard worker, a sharp thinker and had a love for Jesus. He had no choice but to grow fond of the cats/kittens that people kept dropping off and abandoning. Eddie kept up with the vet and Humane Society to shelter and care for them all. Eddie’s family and friends attended his funeral service Saturday, December 30, 2023 at St. George-Forsythe Funeral Home, 109 West Naples St., Wayland. Committal prayers and interment took place immediately following at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Wayland. Memorial contributions may be made to the Canandaigua VA Medical Center, 400 Fort Hill Ave, Canandaigua, NY 14424, United States.

DISTRACTIONS THAT CAN AFFECT EFFICIENCY AT WORK Smartphones: A 2015 CareerBuilder survey of hiring and human resources managers from various industries found that employers cited smartphones and texting as the biggest productivity killers in the workplace. Professionals no doubt recognize how distracting their phones can be during the workday, and they may feel powerless to avoid them. But they’re not. Alter notification settings so the phone only delivers the most important notifications (i.e., children’s schools, meeting reminders, etc.) during the day. Turn off notifications from news, sports and entertainment apps.
