DID YOU KNOW? Halitosis, or bad breath as it’s commonly known, can result from any number of factors. While food can be a culprit, some additional factors may be contributing to mouth odor as well. Poor dental hygiene is a particular concern. According to Colgate and the American Dental Association, failure to brush and floss teeth regularly leads to the accumulation of food particles in the mouth. This food can collect bacteria and begin to break down, causing a bad aroma. Dry mouth is another condition that causes bad breath. Without adequate saliva production, particles of food that may cause odor are not swept away regularly. Bad breath also may be an indication of a medical condition elsewhere in the body. Upper respiratory infections and gastrointestinal disturbances may contribute to halitosis.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have had weight-loss surgery, specifically an adjustable lap band that was revised to a gastric sleeve in 2018. I have been given and read conflicting recommendations regarding the use of NSAIDs following these procedures. I have read that taking a low dose (400 mg) is considered safe. I have also read and been told to take the children’s liquid form at an adult dosage rather than the tablets. I am a 57-year-old female. I have largely avoided taking NSAIDs for years, but I have developed osteoarthritis and find that I am taking them more often (400 mg once daily, one to two times a week at most). I do ensure that I take them with food and also take a Pepcid whenever I take ibuprofen. -- A.W. ANSWER: There are several types of weight-loss (bariatric) surgery, and the best evidence that I found among those who had a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass shows up to a 70% increase in the relative risk of developing peptic ulcers after surgery. This sounds pretty terrible, but it actually means that in an average time span of four years after surgery, 1.4% of people who didn’t take any NSAIDs got an ulcer, while 2.4% of the group that had the greatest amount of NSAID use developed an ulcer. However, the same study showed that only 0.2% of patients who underwent a sleeve gastrectomy developed an ulcer, and the use of NSAIDs did not significantly increase this number. Finally, other studies have shown that medicines like famotidine (Pepcid) reduce the risk of ulcers by about half when used long-term. NSAIDs always have risks, but for a person with a gastric sleeve, the risks of lowdose ibuprofen are modest and need to be weighed against the benefits for a person’s quality of life.

STATISTICS ABOUT MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS Rates of MS are higher further from the equator. The rate of MS is between 57 and 78 cases per 100,000 people in the southern United States (below the 37th parallel), and between 110 and 140 cases in northern states.

TIPS FOR REALIZING GOALS IN THE YEAR AHEAD Make your goals public. By publicly declaring your intention to improve your life, you’re putting some positive pressure on yourself to fully commit to your goal. Friends and loved ones can be great sources of support, and once they’re aware of your efforts, you likely won’t want to let them down. Once you have decided on a resolution, post your short-term and long-term goals to your Facebook page or let your immediate family and closest friends know of your goals in person. Their encouragement can help you stay on track, and they may even offer to help you realize your goals. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

A Journey of Faith and Service: The Story of Pastor Greg Falco BY CHELSIE WELLS

G

reg Falco, lead pastor of Elim Life Church in Lima, embarked on his journey of faith with a deep understanding of the human condition and a fervent love for Jesus. His decision to become a pastor was grounded in the foundational belief that every person is created to know and be loved by God, but the choices we make often separate us from Him. Greg’s passion for sharing the transformative message of Jesus became the driving force behind his call to ministry. From an early age, Greg’s parents played a pivotal role in shaping his Christian identity. His mother exhibited a unique connection with God, fostering an active relationship through prayer, Bible reading, and a lifestyle marked by peace. It was this environment that led Greg, at the age of 5 or 6, to invite Jesus into his life, setting the course for his lifelong journey of faith. As a junior in high school, God spoke to Greg’s heart, calling him to become a pastor. Despite initial reservations, a transformative prayer session with a local pastor shifted Greg’s perspective. What began as reluctance transformed into an unshakeable desire to dedicate his life to guiding a congregation and leading them to know Jesus intimately. Greg’s approach to studying the Bible reflects his dual commitment to pastoral responsibilities and personal growth. For his pastoral role, he engages in prayerful reading, using various translations and conducting deeper studies with commentaries and tools to extract timeless truths. Personally, he embraces devotional readings on the YouVersion app, selecting studies that provide a logical progression through the Bible. Since October 2002, Greg has served in various pastoral capacities, including working with children, youth, and as a worship leader before assuming the role of lead pastor. His vision for Elim Life Church extends beyond the confines of a physical building; he envisions a community where people experience the love of Jesus and actively share it with others. Pastors, according to Greg, are spiritual guides, aiding their congregations in understanding the Bible’s application in daily life. They model lives of integrity, but their paramount role is to facilitate a genuine relationship with Jesus, guiding individuals to know God for themselves and grow in their faith. Reflecting on his ministry experiences, Greg finds joy in witnessing lives transformed and individuals healed by the power of God. Challenges emerge when people, once part of the ministry, walk away from their faith or when families navigate painful losses. These contrasting experiences shape Greg’s pastoral journey, reinforcing his reliance on God’s strength.

support, and challenges from these relationships have contributed to his spiritual growth and understanding of the Bible. Greg acknowledges the importance of surrounding himself with a community that fosters love, acceptance, and growth. Greg’s preaching style is characterized by a desire to make the Bible come alive, providing practical insights for everyday living. He incorporates transparency, Greg and Melanie Falco humor, and authenticity, reflecting his approachable personality. When asked about his beliefs, Greg emphasizes the centrality of Jesus as the way, the truth, and the life, echoing John 14:6. He holds a Biblical worldview, finding it the most logical and accurate lens through which to interpret the world. Greg advocates for the preciousness of every life and the need for love and care for all. Amid the myriad of Bible passages that resonate with Greg, his favorites include Galatians 2:20, Romans 5:8, Romans 10:910, Philippians 4:6-7, and Romans 8:28. The stories of Jesus, David, and the book of Acts also hold special significance in his spiritual journey. Greg’s journey to becoming a pastor involved practical training, mentorship, and education, including earning a master’s degree in organizational leadership. His vision for Elim Life Church is to impact the local community and the world for Jesus, fostering an environment where people experience and share the love of Christ. Elim Life Church serves the community through individual acts of kindness, hosting conferences and community events, supporting local ministries, engaging in international outreach, offering small groups for spiritual and practical growth, and providing ministries for youth and children. Purchase furniture that doubles as storage. Storage ottomans and benches can help clear common areas and bedrooms of clutter such as blankets and bed linens that can make rooms feel more claustrophobic. Storage furniture might not get excess items out of the house, but such furnishings can create a more comfortable, welcoming environment.

HOW CONSUMERS CAN SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT LOCAL BUSINESSES

HOW ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGIES ARE HELPING THE DEAF Cochlear implants The NDC notes that cochlear implants are electronic devices that are surgically implanted under the skin behind the ear. Cochlear implants utilize electrodes placed in the cochlea, or inner ear, to stimulate the auditory nerve of individuals who have substantial and permanent hearing loss. The NDC reports that cochlear implants are not necessarily ideal for everyone with significant hearing loss. That’s because no two brains are the same, and it’s difficult to predict how well a given person’s brain will interpret the new auditory signals the implant is sending. In addition, the NDC notes that certain types of hearing loss cannot be remedied with cochlear implants.

Take to social media. Though it certainly has its detractors, social media remains wildly popular. An April 2023 report from Global WebIndex indicated 60 percent of the world’s population uses social media, and the daily average usage is two hours and 24 minutes. Data from Meta indicates that 83 percent of Instagram users discover new brands while using the platform. Such reports illustrate how effective positive reviews and references to small local businesses can be. Consumers won’t need much time to share a story about a great local business on their social media accounts, but that small investment of time can pay big dividends for those companies.

Here’s a Tip • Sources who know say that if you drop a marble (clean glass) in your tea kettle, it will prevent it from scaling. • Like to use paper towels to dry your clean hands? Set them aside to dry, then you can use them for cleaning with glass cleaner or other solutions. • Use a shower curtain cut or folded in half under baby’s highchair to make cleaning up the floor easier. * Air-popped popcorn is better for you and healthier. If you have an air popper, you’ll also have a jar of popcorn kernels. Keep them in the refrigerator or even the freezer. You can use them straight from the fridge, and the bonus is that you’ll have less unpopped kernels and bigger, fluffier popcorn. -- E.M. in Wisconsin (c) 2024 King Features Synd., Inc.

Huge Thank You I stopped at Food Mart to pick up a couple of things on my way to a get together, and lost my debit card. Luckily I was able to pay for my items another way, but I was frantic about losing my card. Some good samaritan found it and left it at the office. There really are good people in the world! Thank you so much.

Hooray for the Medical Aftercare by Rochester Regional Health Elizabeth Browning’s poem “How Do I Love Thee” was written in 1850 as a love poem for another person. I want to share the ways I love what Rochester Regional Health (RRH) has done to help my wife Dianne (81) since a recent six-day stay at Rochester General Hospital for heart-related issues. Since coming home from the hospital, the follow-up care by RRH has been Tremendous. RRH provided a slew of medical equipment, such as a blood pressure device, oxygen meter reader, great scale commode, and two four-prong walkers for use upstairs and downstairs in our home. RRH has provided me a Telemedicine number to call in her vitals. RRH provided a 24/7 nurse contact for medical issues. There have been periodic visits of physical therapists, nurses, and a social worker. RRH has been God-sent with all the follow-up being provided for Dianne, my dear wife of 59 years. So, “How Do I Love RRH?” A whole lot and Thank You from the bottom of my heart. Love, Joe and Dianne Borzelliere

Driving With A Dog In Your Lap Driving under the influence of drugs/ alcohol, speeding, running stop lights/ signs are several illegal potentials that could cause serious harm to a driver or passengers or the same to those in another vehicle. PLEASE help me understand why drivers can navigate one handed while a dog sits in their lap? Driving with a dog in your lap may impede the proper functioning of an air bag/seat belt if in a collision, which may be a significant hazard to the dog, the driver and/or others in the vehicle. PLEASE tell these reckless drivers they’re a danger to themselves, their pets and others. Wake up and keep your eyes on the road and not your darn dog!

STAY SAFE AND WARM DURING W INTER W ORKOUTS

HOW SMALL BUSINESSES CAN MAKE THE MOST OF LOCAL MARKETS Make things easy for customers: Cash was once king at community festivals and marketplaces, but the convenience of plastic and even touch-less payments has long since replaced hard currency as consumers’ preferred method of payment. In fact, a recent study from Visa found that contact-less payment usage in the United States grew by 150 percent between March 2019 and March 2020. Card readers are inexpensive and easy to use. Businesses can still accept cash payments, as accepting both cash and card increases the chances of making more money.

Know your w eather reports. W hile it’s admirable to stay on course w ith your outdoor w orkouts in the w inter, don’t allow your devotion to overtake your common sense. Check the forecast before beginning an outdoor exercise, paying particular attention to the w ind chil. According to the M ayo Clinic, frostbite can occur w hen skin is exposed to w ind chill levels below minus 18 F for 30 minutes. If need be, shorten outdoor w orkout routines and find w ays to exercise indoors w hen w ind chills get dangerously low.

DID YOU KNOW? The American Heartworm Society advises dog owners to have their furry companions tested for heartworm annually. Such tests can typically be conducted during routine preventive care visits to the veterinarian. The AHS notes that such tests are necessary even for dogs that are taking year-round heartworm prevention medications. Tests can confirm that such programs are working or indicate if they are not effective. The American Veterinary Medical Association notes that antigen tests are the most commonly performed tests. These tests detect the presence of adult female heartworms and they are typically highly accurate. If a test is positive, veterinarians may recommend further testing, including radiographs, a blood profile and an echocardiogram. Such tests can determine a number of things about the infection, including its severity. The AVMA also notes that the additional testing can help determine the best course of treatment. Cat owners should know that it’s more difficult to detect heartworm in cats than in dogs. The AHS indicates that cats are much less likely than dogs to have adult heartworms, making the disease harder to detect in felines. Veterinarians may recommend cats receive both the antigen test and an antibody test, which detects exposure to heartworm larvae. The AVMA notes that more testing may increase the likelihood of detecting the disease in cats.

DID YOU KNOW? Tipping men and women who work in the food service industry is commonplace in the United States and Canada, where citizens typically tip between 15 and 20 percent when dining out at restaurants. But American and Canadian travelers about to depart for overseas destinations may want to familiarize themselves with the practices regarding gratuities before their planes touch down. Some countries automatically add gratuities onto customers’ bills. For example, the government in Dubai mandates that a 10 percent service charge be added to all hotel, restaurant and bar bills. This service charge is then divided by the staff at the establishment, making the charge the equivalent of a tip. Diners in Morocco, where the gratuity is sometimes included in the bill, might be surprised to learn that a 10 percent tip in that country is considered generous. Tips are included in the bill in Costa Rica, where travelers need not feel obligated to leave any additional gratuities. Service is often included in the bill within the United Kingdom as well, though travelers should inspect the bill before assuming gratuity was included. Visitors to Spain should not feel obligated to leave a gratuity larger than 13 percent, and even a tip in the range of 7 percent is considered acceptable.

HEMLOCK “Unraveling the Long History of Hatred Towards Jews, A Journey Through Time and Prejudice”, presented by Jerry Elman, author, blogger, speaker, aims to educate attendees on the 2,500 year history of antisemitism, characterized as the world’s oldest established hate. The Holocaust, the most tragic manifestation of this hatred, was a result of a long history of antisemitism that is often overlooked. This presentation addresses the entire history of Jewish persecution to understand and potentially end this historic hatred. It will shed light on the historical context of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict, and the modern realities of rising antisemitism and the misrepresentation of Jews. DID YOU KNOW? Firms on the lookout for ways to manage employees’ time more efficiently may want to reconsider their approach to meetings. A recent study on meetings commissioned by Verizon Conferencing found that an overwhelming majority of professionals who are considered heavy meeting-goers admitted to an array of behaviors that suggest meetings aren’t as productive as employers may believe. Ninety-six percent of respondents admitted to having missed meetings in the past, while 91 percent acknowledged daydreaming during meetings. In addition, 73 percent of respondents did other work during a meeting, while 39 percent acknowledged falling asleep.

Rather than focusing on job responsibilities at each job you held, gear the résumé around what you achieved in each position. This will help identify how you performed in the position, instead of just a general retelling of what you did. It can be challenging to achieve this for jobs that don’t naturally lend themselves to numerically quantitative results (i.e., increased department sales by 15 percent), but it’s still possible to use a résumé to illustrate your achievements. Rather than state that you were responsible for providing customer service, explain that you built your reputation on conveying difficult technical terms to the layperson, serving as the go-to employee for translating job jargon for outside correspondence. If you have quantitative proof of how you accomplished something, certainly add it. This can include measures of profit growth, reduction of debt or increase in customer base.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Kennel or Sitter? Traveling Owner Can’t Decide DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I am traveling for business in a few days and will be gone for just over a week. Because I can’t bring my dog Jasper with me, I’m trying to decide whether to board him at a nearby kennel or hire a dog-sitter instead. I’m worried about him contracting that respiratory illness that has been affecting dogs lately. What’s your recommendation? -- Todd G., via email DEAR TODD: Both of those options are fine -- as long as you take a few minutes to investigate both the kennel and interview the dog-sitter. Schedule a tour of the kennel facility so you can see the conditions Jasper will live in and talk to the staff. Has the kennel had any dogs develop kennel cough or other transmitted viruses recently? How often do they disinfect the kennels and play areas? How much exercise do the dogs get? Likewise, interview the dog-sitter in person, or over Zoom. How often will they visit Jasper -- once or twice a day? How often will Jasper get walks and play time? Will Jasper be the only dog being walked, or will he be part of a group of dogs? Is the dog-sitter insured, in case of accidents? Once you’ve decided which caregiver to place Jasper with, be sure they have your contact information in case of emergencies, and details about Jasper’s diet, type of food and medications. Place an article of clothing that has your scent on it in Jasper’s bag so that he is more comfortable whether staying at home or sleeping at the kennel. After you return, keep an eye on Jasper to make sure he’s healthy. If he is coughing or sneezing frequently, has a lot of nasal or eye discharge, and seems lethargic or uninterested in food, take him to the vet for an evaluation.
