HOW TO SAFELY NAVIGATE WET ROADS Drive slowly. Many fall road trippers are already driving slowly so they can fully enjoy the fall scenery. But it’s important that drivers slow down even more when encountering wet roadways, as driving slow can reduce the risk of a vehicle hydroplaning. When vehicles hydroplane, they slide uncontrollably on wet surfaces as the tires rise up on the water covering the roads. AAA notes that tires on vehicles driving as slow as 35 miles per hour can still lose some contact with the road, so drivers should maintain low speeds when driving on wet roads and reduce their speeds even further during heavy rains.
STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Cellophane, invented in 1908, was originally intended to protect tablecloths from wine spills.
NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Keep the yolks in hard-boiled eggs from crumbling by wetting your knife between slices. * “Save plastic bags that cannot be recycled, and use them to collect food scraps that cannot be composted or flushed.” -- B.M. in New York * “I use double-stick tape to hang lighter items on my walls, since it does not leave a hole, and I am a renter. You also can use it to reduce noise from vibrations. For instance, I used it in my car to keep the carpet lying flat in the trunk.” -- J.T. via e-mail * “To soften butter without melting it, warm a bowl that is bigger than the butter stick and invert it over the butter on a plate. It’s nice before a meal because it makes a hard stick of butter easier to spread on bread rolls, but not so soft that you use too much.” -- T.G. in Indiana

To keep our carpets from giving us static shock, we fill a water spray bottle with 1 part laundry softener and 4 parts water. Give the air and carpet a spritz, and it kills the zaps.” -- A.O. in Canada

Going out of his way A thank you to the driver who went out of his way at a hotel I was staying at. When asked if he could drive me to a certain destination, he said he was sorry, and that it was beyond where they were allowed to go with their company van. However, after looking around and determining he wasn’t busy, he said to me, “Let’s go!” We hear all the time about people going the extra mile for their customers. Thanks for doing so!

Kindness matters! I have worked about 27 years in this town where my husband grew up. How happy we all were when my daughter, her husband and their 6-year-old daughter bought a home here! My granddaughter was homeschooled last year and hasn’t played with other kids in a long time. She is very bright, happy, friendly, energetic, kind, and eager without a mean bone in her body. This last weekend, I took her to the park. A little girl and her brother came to play. My granddaughter asked to play with them. They ran away, ignoring her each time she followed. Thinking they did not like her, she cried, heartbroken. So, we went to a neighboring playground, but there, another little girl and her brother kept running away. My granddaughter said, “Little girl, little girl…can I talk to you please? I haven’t had any little kids to play with in a long, long time and I want to know if……” The little girl ran away. “Little girl, can I please talk to you?” No response. I hugged my granddaughter as she started crying, and that little girl laughed at us. The welcome my granddaughter got here makes me cry. She starts school for the first time next week and is so excited to “meet some friends.” I pray she gets a classroom with warm, receptive, friendly children who will befriend this wonderful little girl with a big heart.
Social Security Cap Each week, I see comments regarding Social Security. How many of you realize there is a wage-base cap? According to IRS Topic 751 for earnings in 2021, this base is $142,800. Which means that any earnings over this amount are not subject to Social Security withholdings. If your neighbor earns $250,000, only the first $142,800 is subject to Social Security withholdings. That also means that Jeff Bezos pays on only the first $142,800. Also, Donald Trump, Bill Gates, Lady Gaga, George Clooney, Mark Zuckerberg, and the list goes on, only pay on the first $142,800 of income. The powers that be making the decision on the wage-base cap, I am sure, make considerably more than this cap. I’m certain there is nothing we little people can do to change this unfair practice, but it seems a significant raise in this cap could go a long way to making Social Security self-sustaining for years and years into the future. Hero or villain? It is amazing to watch the people who, just a year ago, praised healthcare workers as heroes be the same who are now condemning them as villains for not wanting the COVID vaccine. There were so many signs that praised them. Now, they are the enemy?

The colors of fall foliage are actually present year-round. Fall is known for its colorful foliage. But the pigments responsible for those colors are actually present year-round. According to the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, green, yellow and orange pigments are present year-round. However, during spring and summer, the leaves serve as factories where many foods necessary to help the tree grow are manufactured. That process takes place in the leaf in cells containing chlorophyll, which gives the leaves their green color. This process ceases as hours of daylight decrease and temperatures drop. As a result, chlorophyll breaks down, the green color disappears and the vivid colors of fall foliage begin to appear.

Local Eagle Scout to Build Lima Community Garden BY AMANDA K. DUDEK
W
e often hear that today’s youth are too distracted by rapidly advancing technology and a plethora of electronic devices to notice the world around them. While this may be true of some, Eagle Scout John Ryan Samarra is an inspiring example of a young person who not only cares about those in need but who actively seeks to make a difference in his community, as well. Moved by those experiencing food insecurity as well as his desire to bring neighbors together, John Ryan has chosen to establish Lima Community Garden as his Eagle Scout project. A member of Troop 105 in Mendon, John Ryan found inspiration for his project where so many great ideas start: in the kitchen talking with his mom. The pair were casually discussing the possibility of a local grocery store which would sell local products, and the conversation led to the concept of a community garden. For John Ryan, it was a lightbulb moment. “I realized I could do that as my Eagle Scout project because it was something I was really excited about,” he recalled. Deciding to design the project for his hometown, John Ryan began discussing his plans with community members and members of the Lima Village Board and the Lima Parks Commission. “They all seemed on board with it, and some of them have even expressed interest in having a plot of their own or helping out,” he said, thankful to be able to serve his hometown. “I grew up here for most of my life,” John Ryan shared. “I know a great number of people in Lima, and we are good friends. Part of the reason this project matters so much to me is that over the last couple of years, I have seen so much division. I want the community garden to be a positive influence that brings people together.”
John Ryan explained that his Eagle Scout project is just the beginning, laying the groundJohn Ryan Samarra visits the work for what he hopes will be an Pittsford Community Garden as ongoing community endeavor. he plans his garden project! “My Eagle Scout project has to be completed by my 18th birthday in December, so the goal is to build the garden’s infrastructure as well as a pest-preventing fence around it,” he said. “We are planning 24, 10 x 5 foot garden plots with a border around each and mulched paths in between to be located at Mark Tubbs Memorial Park in Lima.” After these pieces are finished, John Ryan’s project will be complete, but he has a greater vision for this garden. “I hope to get a bunch of Eagle Scouts together to plant on some of the plots and to perhaps even start a Lima Community Garden Club. I would like it to continue even if I move away.”

(Right) This pleasant stretch of land in Matt Tubbs Memorial Park is the garden’s future home!
How can area neighbors participate in this exciting, new garden? It is as easy as the click of a mouse! “Members of the community who would like to reserve a plot should email us at limacommunitygarden@gmail.com,” said John Ryan. “They will be able to claim their plot where they can grow whatever they like, and they will be responsible for its upkeep. We do ask that each grower donate a certain amount of the produce they grow to a local food bank, and we will likely have restrictions on pesticide use.” Who can reserve a plot? The possibilities are nearly endless! “A plot can belong to almost anyone: a person, a family, a garden club, a local restaurant, a 2nd grade class…the important thing is that it will be grown by people in the community for people in the community. Not only will we be helping neighbors in need with delicious local produce, but by reducing the need for shipped produce, we will be more environmentally friendly, too.”
With this unity, John Ryan believes the community can make a huge impact on local hunger. “The Lima Community Garden would donate a decent amount of food to charity through local food banks,” he explained. “It would bring people together to feed our community and support those fighting food insecurity.”

(Top) Created by John Ryan Samarra’s father, Ken Samarra, this detailed 3D rendering gives a glimpse into the exciting possibilities in store for the Lima Community Garden!
John Ryan is currently using a GoFundMe to raise funds for necessary project materials. “Our goal is based on my estimated costs if the community garden does not receive any donated tools and materials,” he said. “Our Facebook post has only been up for a few days (Facebook.com/LimaGarden), and people are already expressing interest and asking questions. I am excited for how this garden will bring our community together!”

CHOOSING AND APPLYING MULCH Application: Correct application of the mulch is essential. Applying too much mulch can adversely affect lawns, plants and soil. In addition, excessive application can cause decay and make lawns and plants more vulnerable to disease. Homeowners uncertain about when and how to apply mulch in the fall can consult with a lawn care professional to devise a plan that ensures their lawns and gardens hold up against winter weather. SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Holiday Gift Shortages If you will have holiday shopping to do this year, you need to get started on it now. Manufacturers and store owners are saying there will be shortages. There are labor problems, problems with container ships that can’t be offloaded in ports, trucks that can’t deliver the goods, material supply-chain problems ... you get the picture. Here are two suggestions to keep gift-buying simpler this year: toys and books. TOYS -- If you have small children to buy for, shop now. Manufacturers of many of the most popular toys are saying that they’ve seen shortages of required materials on a global scale. Try local toy stores for items they have in stock now. BOOKS -- Call your library and ask for age-appropriate suggestions for young children. Then, list in hand, call your local bookstore. Ask if they have in stock what you need. If you can actually go to the store and pick up the books curbside, you’re ahead of the game. Otherwise try ordering online, but look for things already in stock. For teens and adults, consider buying them a Kindle, an e-book reader available on Amazon. (I’ve had three different versions of Kindle since 2016 and truly appreciate the way I can order a book and have it appear on my e-reader within minutes.) A new Kindle, a $15 case and a $50 gift certificate for e-books would be welcome gifts for readers. Check the delivery dates of the various Kindle colors. Some are available immediately; others aren’t. When it comes to online shopping, experts advise ordering items that are as close to home as possible, not across oceans. Beware of local shipping delays as well. Gone are the days of always receiving boxes in just a few days. If you order something online, track it, and follow up with a phone call if necessary. PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Forward Thinking Helps Pets in Natural Disasters DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Why do people leave their pets behind when a hurricane or forest fire approaches? And what happens to the pets that survive a disaster? -- Kerry in Cincinnati DEAR KERRY: Pet owners don’t intend to abandon pets to approaching danger, but it happens all too frequently: Pets get left behind when a disaster strikes. Sometimes an owner has to leave the pet behind -- rescue services prioritize human life over pets when a situation is dire. Sometimes, in the panic and confusion of gathering up things to evacuate, a pet will dart out the door. And sometimes, pets get abandoned because evacuation centers won’t allow pets inside. After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, when more than 100,000 pets were left to fend for themselves during and after the storm (www. louisianaspca.org/about-us/hurricane-katrina/animal-rescue-facts/), pet shelters radically changed the way they manage intake and care of animals. They became more proactive. They built bigger, stronger networks with other shelters locally and nationwide, and coordinated their efforts with emergency responders. (www.sierraclub. org/sierra/what-happens-animals-during-natural-disasters). They got better at reuniting rescued pets with owners. Pet owners can play a direct role in helping pet rescue efforts by being proactive well before a disaster strikes. Microchip your pets and keep contact info up to date. Keep up with your pet’s vaccinations and health checks. Most importantly, have your own evacuation plan that includes a “go” bag for you and for your pet. A pet’s “go” bag should include an extra leash and collar, a copy of their medical and registration records, pet food, waste pickup bags or pee pads, and extra medication if they take any. Know where to evacuate and which shelters allow pets.

Town of Cohocton Residents Are you aware that ANC, Inc is trying to close the EJ Cottrell Library? And that the Town of Cohocton Board member who is running for supervisor is on the board for this organization? The ANC, which owns the building housing the library as well as the Post Office, has said the building should be condemned. Closing the library is the goal. ANC is willing to sell the ‘condemned’ building to the library. The library is an intricate part of the community, offering much more than books. It is a meeting place for seniors, offers line dancing classes, craft classes and computers for the community to use. Enabling the loss of an organization that benefits the entire community is not the action of a community-minded candidate. Paid for by Concerned Citizens of the Town of Cohocton

Husband Is Always Tired ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband is tired all the time. He functions, but frequently has to sit to recoup his energy, even after a shower. He is diabetic and has been for over 10 years. He does not take insulin and manages to keep his A1C within 7.1 to 6.9. He weighs 207 pounds, and he’s 6 feet, 1 inch tall and 75 years old. His bloodwork always comes back normal, and a nuclear stress test came back negative. We have discussed this chronic fatigue with our family doctor. His only explanation is possibly low testosterone (the low end of normal). We know that some if not all of his medications list fatigue as a side effect, but we cannot persuade our doctor to do further tests. My husband does have an appointment with a cardiologist in May for a consultation and any suggestions, and also a checkup in six months with our family doctor. My concern is his medications and the fact that they are generic. I have read many stories about generic drugs and problems with their effectiveness. -- J.C. ANSWER: Fatigue, which is the sensation of feeling tired, is a nonspecific symptom and a complaint that’s commonly heard by general doctors. It can be related to many diseases, as disparate as multiple sclerosis to heart failure, anemia to depression, and chronic infection to sleep disturbances. However, your husband notes a severe intolerance to exertion, which makes me suspect systemic exertion intolerance disorder, also called myalgic encephalomyelitis or chronic fatigue syndrome. Poor sleep, difficulty thinking or concentrating, and having worse symptoms with standing also go along with this diagnosis. There is yet no lab test for confirmation. The diagnosis is made after considering other causes, and testing for those that make sense after a careful history and exam. Diabetes, when not well controlled, may lead to chronic fatigue. I’m not so concerned with generic medications as I am about too many or the wrong ones, so a careful review of medications is appropriate. I have previously recommended a graded exercise program for this condition; however, the study that led to this recommendation had several significant issues; many people will actually have worsening of their post-exercise fatigue, so exercise must be used very cautiously and on an individualized basis. Cognitive behavioral therapy has had some benefit, but we desperately need better treatments. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2021 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Q &A
Master
with the
Gardeners
Look for this weekly column! Your questions answered by the local Cornell experts.
from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County Why did my hydrangea not flower? Usually, it is because of poor pruning by humans or by Mother Nature. I have learned it is best to ask for more information before I give a complete answer. “Did you receive this hydrangea as a gift for Easter or Mother’s Day? Did it have pretty plastic or foil paper around the pot?” If so, the plant may be a florist hydrangea, and it is simply not hardy enough for our area. Mother Nature freezes the flower buds each year destroying the future flower.
Usually, these plants are big-leaf hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla). Most varieties bloom on old wood, i.e., wood that grew and produced flower buds during the previous year. Therefore, early, or late freezes or bitter winters may damage the flower buds. The other reason is pruning at the wrong time. If you cut back a hydrangea between the fall and early spring, you have trimmed off the future flower because it blooms on old wood. For further information, go to http://ccelivingstoncounty.org/
SEND YOUR QUESTIONS TO OUR EXPERTS! Your question(s) will be answered directly & may be featured in our column! Ask them today at: GVPENNYSAVER. COM/GARDEN

HOW TO NEGOTIATE (AND GET) A SALARY INCREASE Salaries in the workplace have long been a hot-button issue for women. The differences in compensation for males and females continues to draw the attention of politicians and gender equality advocates alike. The United States Department of Labor noted that, in 2015, the median weekly earnings for fulltime male workers increased by 2.2 percent from the year prior. During that same period, female earnings increased by just 0.8 percent. That latest data marks the third consecutive quarter that the increase in males’ earnings doubled that of females. On average, women who work fulltime earn 81.1 cents for every dollar men earn. Women aware of that unfair gap in pay may feel helpless to address it with their bosses out of fear of being seen as unappreciative or selfish. In fact, addressing compensation makes many workers uncomfortable, regardless of their gender. According to a salary survey from PayScale, almost 60 percent of male and female workers do not ask for a raise. Negotiating salary increases requires finesse, timing and being informed. It also requires a certain measure of gumption. EMPLOYMENT

Call (585) 384-5736 HOW TO ACE JOB INTERVIEWS WHEN SWITCHING CAREERS Millions of people change careers every year. Whereas professionals may have once worked for the same company for the majority, if not the entirety, of their careers, nowadays it’s not uncommon for men and women to change jobs several times before reaching retirement. Changing jobs and changing careers are not necessarily the same thing. Professionals mulling a career change will have to consider a host of factors that men and women looking to change jobs may never have to contemplate. Such factors may include returning to school and lifestyle changes designed to make living on less income more feasible. Professionals changing careers may also need to develop a strategy for handling job interviews. When changing jobs as opposed to careers, professionals can draw attention to their résumés, essentially letting their experience speak for itself. But while experience is often a feather in a job candidate’s cap, professionals changing careers may need to focus more on their futures than their pasts when interviewing for a new career. The decision to change careers can induce both excitement and anxiety. Maintaining a positive attitude and employing various strategies when interviewing with prospective employers can help make the transition to a new career go smoothly.

How households earn their income has changed dramatically over the last several decades. According to a Pew Research Centeral analysis of the Decennial Census and American Community Surveys integrated Public Use Microdata Sample files, in 1960 only fathers worked in 70 percent of American households. That figure has dropped in each ensuing decade and by 2012 fathers were the sole earners in just 31 percent of American households. While one in four households in American were dual income households in 1960, by 2012 that figure had risen to 60 percent. While those figures represent dramatic changes, the number of households in which mothers are the sole earners has not changed all that much since 1960. In 1960, mothers were the sole earners in just 2 percent of American households. Fifty-two years later 6 percent of American households featured mothers as the sole earners.

A 2015 survey of more than 2,000 adults commissioned by the workplace solution provider Workfront found that 38 percent of survey participants have missed life events because of a bad work-life balance. Access to technology that means work is never too far away might contribute to poor work-life balance, as 57 percent of respondents also acknowledged feeling that technology has ruined the definition of a family dinner. Finding a healthy balance between work and life at home may require a concerted effort on the part of working parents, but there are ways to successfully juggle a career and family. Page 35

DIETARY AIDE FULL & PART-TIME Please email or call & ask for: Thomas Reaves, Director of Food Service treaves@conesuslakenursinghome.com

Change your workout schedule. Regular exercise improves shortand long-term health while also increasing daily energy levels. Professionals who include exercise in their daily routines yet still suffer from a lack of alertness in the afternoon may need to alter their workout schedules. A 2011 study published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine found that participants who were assigned afternoon exercise programs during work hours reported increased productivity versus those who were not assigned afternoon workouts. If working out in the afternoon is not feasible, avoid working out too late at night, as the National Institutes of Health note that exercising within two to three hours of bedtime can disrupt sleep, ultimately having a negative impact on energy levels the following day.

Charlton Heston was cast as Moses in the 1956 blockbuster movie “The Ten Commandments” partly because he resembled Michelangelo’s famous statue of Moses. * The term “coccyx” (more familiarly known as your tailbone) is derived from the Greek word kokkux, or “cuckoo,” because its curved shape resembles the bird’s beak. * Benjamin Franklin introduced tofu to America in 1770.
