Paying It Forward, One Onion At A Time I was dining at my favorite local restaurant, enjoying my usual: the famous garbage plate. Now, as we all know, the portion sizes of these beasts could feed a small army! So I always bring snack size baggies with me to save small portions for later, as well as the extra toppings. I had bagged up all of my leftovers and was walking to my car when I saw an older gal struggling under the weight of a hefty garbage plate. The mighty plate proved to be too much and clattered to the ground, spilling some of its precious contents! I sprang into action as quickly as I could (I ain’t no spring chicken myself!) and saved what I could for this hungry patron. As I helped wrangle her meal, I noticed her plate was lacking the integral diced onions. How serendipitous! I promptly pulled my snack size baggie of diced onions from my pocket and handed it to her with a slight bow. She departed, bounty in tow, off to enjoy her sumptuous GP with diced onions. It made my day to make her day. Bon appetit! Thank you! I’d like to thank the parents of TE for raising an honest young man. Last week I lost my purse while running errands. I went home and couldn’t find it, so I went to the last place I remember stopping - my local dollar store. When I went back, T was the first person to greet me with my purse - what a relief! There was an older gentleman who said, “Lady, you’re lucky to get your purse back!” and he was right. I was so thankful, not for the $10 left in it but my license, DPA, credit cards, pictures, and more were all there. I’m 88 years old and the only thing I could remember was that I lost my bag. This is a tip for older ones: make a list of everything in your wallet and leave it in a safe place at home. Then if you lose it, you’ll be able to know what exactly you’re missing. T - it would be a better world if everyone was honest like you. Thank you!

SHARE WITH US Junk and More I cannot believe how the village is OK with a business using a historical area for junk/storage. This has been brought up to the village office and code enforcement. It seems like they are more concerned about a single vehicle in a remote location than the center of the village. Why? It makes me wonder about the special privileges some people/owners receive. It wasn’t that long ago the village was all over a business in the same area to clean up, so why does this place get a free pass? I know NOTHING was said because MORE junk is being piled up. Boats, vehicles, trailers, vans, lawn mowers, appliances, plows, A-Verdi boxes, lawn furniture, toys, etc. Visitors are seeing this area and the village should be ashamed. STOP THE SMOKERS Please stop the people taking over some of the senior apartment buildings by smoking inside every day for years. It is putting others’ health at risk. Get them out! They do it because they can. What are you afraid of? You’re not very good at your job. Do your job or find another one that you’re good at. You don’t take away one’s right and give it to another. DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I periodically dog-sit for a neighbor, keeping her small Beagle, Downy, at my house while she travels. The problem is my cat, Sparks. He is absolutely infuriated when I bring Downy home, even though Downy doesn’t bark at him. Sparks will yowl and glare at the dog every time they’re in the same room. And now, Sparks is peeing on the rug next to my bed the entire time that Downy visits. What can I do about this? -- Cheryl J., Reno, Nevada DEAR CHERYL: Ouch! Cats are notoriously territorial, not just with dogs but with other cats, too. And Sparks does not seem to be settling in to the notion that Downy is an OK guest to have. It’s clear that you’ll have to keep the two of them separate when Downy is visiting. But by leaving a mess on your bedroom rug, Sparks is signaling that separation may not be enough. The situation is really stressing him out. He’s drawing the line by marking your rug, a clear statement: This is my territory! The quickest way to resolve the issue, of course, is to stop dog-sitting for your friend -- or dog-sit by periodically visiting her home throughout the day to spend time with Downy and make sure he has food and water. But if that’s not possible, and you intend to keep Downy at your house instead, you’ve got only a few options. • Keep a clear separation between Downy and the cat. Place their food bowls in separate rooms with the door closed between them. • Change out the rug in your bedroom for a new one, and spray it with cat pheromone (available at pet stores) to try to stop Sparks from peeing on it. • Consider giving Sparks an anti-anxiety medication (available from the veterinarian) to reduce his stress. Best of luck. Be patient with both pets; they may never be comfortable around each other, but you may be able to keep them both from being too anxious.

GET ON THE FAST TRACK TO BEING ORGANIZED • Keep a cleanup bin handy. Put an empty basket in a central location, using it to gather stray items scattered around main living areas. Once everything has been collected, items can be returned to their rightful place. • Make the bed. One of the easiest ways to keep a room looking neat is to make the bed each day. Store clean linens in a pillow case so the entire set is together and ready to go. • Purge closets and cabinets. There’s no point allowing old, stained or damaged items to take up space. Set aside days to clear expired medication from the bathroom cabinet, discard ripped or ill-fitting clothing from the closet, or to dispose of broken toys in a nursery. • Write things down. Tasks seem more manageable when they are written down in black-and-white and can be crossed off as completed. Writing things down also helps make the mind feel more organized. • Exercise caution before buying. Don’t buy more than you need; otherwise, you’ll have to find space for extra items. Also, keep inventory of food and supplies in the house so you’re not unwittingly buying duplicates. • Sort mail and paperwork. Establish different categories for papers so they can be sorted and discarded as needed. These may include bills, invitations, school papers, and junk mail. Reduce paper clutter by opting for digital correspondence when possible. • Make one repair at a time. Tackle that source of stress by focusing on one repair and seeing it through to completion. • Delegate the work. If kids want to help organize, let them. It can be a fun project for an adolescent to rearrange the pantry or offer their ideas for corralling messes.

I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green. ~Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mosses from and Old Manse

WHAT TO DO WHEN A PROJECT STALLS

Trust Your Roof to a Specialist

Start off on solid financial footing. It’s important that homeowners who want to upgrade their homes enter the home improvement process with a realistic grasp of their finances. Many home improvement projects stall when homeowners run out of money. Homeowners can avoid such unfortunate situations by only beginning a project they know they can afford. Whether funding a project with a loan or savings or a combination of both, homeowners should make an honest assessment of what they can afford to commit to a given project. If the amount of money available does not add up to the estimated cost of the project, delay the project now or you might be facing a stalled project down the road.

SHADE-TOLERANT PLANTS COMPLETE LANDSCAPES

Family owned & operated for over 60 years.

Plants need sunlight to thrive and grow, but some need less sunlight than others. People who find their landscapes are less supportive to sun-loving plants can choose from a variety of shade-tolerant plants, shrubs and trees. Shade tolerance refers to a plant’s ability to withstand low levels of light. Certain plants have adapted this feature to survive in the wild. Plants that grow at the base of forest floors, for example, will get less sunlight than others outside of the tree canopy. Such adaptations enable a wide variety of foliage to grow even though they are not exposed to much sunlight. While sun-loving plants often have broad leaves and expend significant energy to capture sunlight for photosynthesis, shade-tolerant plants expend less energy and tend to be more efficient consumers of soil nutrients and sunlight. Penn State Extension’s Plant and Pests division says the amount of shade a plant is growing under will directly affect the density of the foliage and the plant’s flowering and fruiting characteristics. Blending shade-tolerant plants into the landscape can be an effective use of space. Before choosing plants for an existing landscape, it’s important to assess the level of shade or sun the plants will receive. Once homeowners understand which type of shade they are dealing with, they can then visit plant nurseries and select their plants. Most greenery comes with care instructions that include recommendations regarding the amount of shade/sunlight the plant will need to do well. If further assistance is needed, a knowledgeable employee can make suggestions based on landscape needs. Shade-tolerant plants can make welcome additions to the landscape, offering greenery and color in the darker areas of a property.

TIPS TO HELP MEN LOOK THEIR BEST: Make an effort to reduce stress. Stress produces a host of negative side effects, some of which can indirectly affect appearance. Some people dealing with stress end up suffering from insomnia, which can contribute to bags under the eyes. Stress also can adversely affect hydration of the skin, contributing to dry skin. Stress also can contribute to hormonal imbalances that lead to skin conditions such as acne, psoriasis and eczema. If stress is a problem, make a concerted effort to reduce it, even working with a physician to reduce stress when necessary. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Seizure-Like Reactions Pose the Question of Epilepsy --DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband experienced seizure-like

DID YOU KNOW? Getting out and about is a vital component of many seniors’ daily lives, but it’s important that aging men and women recognize how much exercise is healthy for them. The Department of Health & Human Services notes that adults need a mix of physical activity to stay healthy. That mix should be a combination of moderate-intensity aerobic activities, which can include golfing, swimming and even gardening, and muscle strengthening activities like weightlifting that make the muscles work harder than usual. The DHHS recommends adults combine 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week with at least two days of muscle-strengthening activities. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that these guidelines are safe for individuals who are 65 and older, generally fit and have no limiting health conditions. Individuals who do not fit that criteria should consult with their physicians before beginning a new exercise regimen, as it’s possible that they could be putting their health at considerable risk if they attempt to follow guidelines designed for people who are generally fit. It’s also important that healthy seniors avoid overdoing it in regard to exercise. Though the DHHS suggestions are the minimum recommendations, going too far beyond those guidelines without first consulting a physician could increase seniors’ risk for injury, illness or even death.

episodes without tonic/clonic body movements in high altitude. These episodes occured while he was traveling, being physically active in Colorado and skiing in France. Both episodes happened at least 12 hours after physical activity. Our general physician back home felt that these were not true seizures, instead a reaction to possibly being dehydrated in high altitudes. A vast amount of testing resulted in nothing unusual going on with his cardiovascular system or his brain. But just recently, he had another episode two days after being active, hydrating at sea level and banging his head -- with more body movement this time. I have been researching online, and seizure-like reactions seem to occur due to electrolyte imbalances. It is very hard to get to a neurologist without an excessive wait time. Do you think antiseizure medications are warranted? -- S.S. ANSWER: It’s important to separate a seizure (which anyone can get if there is enough stress to the brain) from epilepsy, a condition where the person is susceptible to recurring seizures. For it to be considered epilepsy, a person generally needs at least two unprovoked seizures (with no unusual stress to the brain) at least 24 hours apart. Only epilepsy is treated with long-term antiseizure medicines. There is indeed a risk of developing seizures while at a high altitude. In addition, there are many other conditions that can provoke a seizure. You mentioned electrolyte imbalance, but sodium (too much or too little) as well as too little amounts of magnesium and calcium are among the most common. Low blood sugar is a frequent cause. Some recreational drugs cause seizures, but withdrawal from drugs, especially alcohol, is more common. Metabolic diseases of the kidney and thyroid are also common. Sleep deprivation, brain injury (especially stroke, but also trauma), brain tumors and brain infections are all common triggers that your husband probably received an evaluation for. Had it only been the first seizure, my advice likely would have been the same as your physician’s, although I probably would have suggested a consultation with an epileptologist (a neurologist with special expertise in seizures). Now that he has had a second -- and unprovoked -- seizure, my suspicion that he has epilepsy is much higher. (In hindsight, it’s clear that the first reaction really was a seizure.) Most people experiencing their first seizure while at a high altitude were eventually found to have epilepsy after further testing, including an electroencephalogram (EEG). The high altitude doesn’t cause the seizure; it just increases the risk of a seizure in a person who has an underlying propensity for it. This may also occur with many medicines, especially those used for depression. Your husband should see an epileptologist as soon as possible. I strongly feel that it’s unwise for nonexperts to prescribe anti-seizure drugs, except as a treatment until a patient can be seen by an expert. I have seen that done many times, and it is done improperly, at least according to the expert a patient eventually sees. Your husband needs a timely and comprehensive reevaluation. Epileptologists recognize that new onset seizures in an adult require a more timely appointment. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. KEEP CALM & DON’T BUG OUT ABOUT THE ASIAN GIANT HORNET by Dick Rogers, principal scientist and entomologist, Bayer Bee Care Program

Serving Our Community

(NAPSI) — Scientific information can ease the fears of many people concerned about the arrival of the Asian giant hornet in the United States.

for over 20 years. Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology

What do we know? Hornets are found in many parts of the world and play a vital role in the balance of natural ecosystems through pollination, biodiversity and natural pest control. Unfortunately dubbed the “murder hornet,” the Asian giant hornet (AGH), the world’s largest, was sighted for the first time in the United States in December 2019. Sue DeBruyne, Au.D. Doctor of Audiology

Who (or what) is at risk? While the AGH is large in size and has a big sting compared to other hornets, it is typically not aggressive with humans (Whew! That’s a relief). As always, those allergic to bee or wasp stings should practice caution and avoid contact with hornets in general.

Accepting New Patients.

However, the AGH can pose a risk to honey bee colonies because it feeds on large insects, including wasps and bees. So far, they’ve only appeared in the northwest part of the United States, and monitoring efforts by the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) are underway to better understand these hornets and help educate beekeepers on how to protect their colonies.

Lakeville 3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2

Henrietta 20 Finn Road, Suite C

585.286.3664 SouthsideHearingCenter.com

On top of this, our team at Bayer is taking action by organizing a first detection trapping program in North Carolina and Missouri, which will be deployed in early July. We will then share our results with the WSDA at the end of the season. While we do not expect to catch any AGH this year, early detection is key to an effective eradication effort if needed. You can be confident that the early introduction of the AGH in the United States and Canada is being closely monitored by professionals who have management plans in place should there be any future sightings. There’s no need to worry about catching a glimpse of these hornets in your yards or gardens, as they are not yet established in the United States. In fact, the only hornet that is established in our country, the European hornet, has been around since the late 1800s. How can we help protect the bees? It’s not only researchers and entomologists who can help protect honeybees. Everyone can support bees by getting outside to plant pollinator-friendly gardens or flowers. As pollinators play a vital role in our ecosystem, crop production and biodiversity, I recommend you stay calm and keep gardening to provide your fuzzy friends with the flowers and habitat they need to thrive. Learn more about how to plant pollinator-friendly gardens that help bees, monarchs and other important pollinators by visiting https://beehealth.bayer.us/home. Dick Rogers has been a professional entomologist for more than four decades and has been keeping and studying bees for over 40 years. He joined the Bayer Bee Care Program in 2009.

Data from the United States Department of Justice indicates that partner violence accounted for 20 percent of all violent crime in the U.S. in 2018. The World Health Organization defines intimate partner violence as behavior within an intimate relationship that causes physical, sexual or psychological harm. Such violence can include acts of physical aggression, sexual coercion, psychological abuse, and controlling behaviors. Violence perpetrated by both current and former spouses and partners falls under the umbrella of intimate partner violence. Domestic violence is so prevalent that the National Network to End Domestic Violence reports that it fields more than 19,000 calls on a typical day. Anyone who is a victim of domestic violence or suspects a loved one or acquaintance is being abused is urged to call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 (SAFE) or 1-800-7873224 (TTY) right away. Do not set your child up to fail by selecting a restaurant that is too fancy or quiet. Save those restaurants for when your company is adults only. A place that is used to noise (and moderate mess) is better. Bring along some games, toys and other trinkets to keep their attention. Try playing games, such as counting the packets of sugar or finding people wearing red shirts. Avoid dining out with a tired child, and be prompt in selecting meals and eating. This is not a time to linger, as youngsters’ attention spans and willingness to sit still tend to be minimal. Be prepared to leave with a to-go box if a child proves unruly.

STRATEGIES TO DISCONNECT MORE OFTEN Turn off your notifications. According to research from the Business of Apps, the average smartphone user in the United States receives 46 app push notifications each day. The sound of a smartphone notification has become as recognizable as any sound, and the volume of notifications the average users receive in a 24-hour period no doubt contributes heavily to how much time they spend on their phones. Turning off notifications makes it easier to disconnect from devices, and may even make individuals more productive.

Leaves cascading dow n from trees indicate the arrival of autumn. How ever, colorful and aw e-inspiring autumn leaves can be a hazard if left to lie on the ground too long. Thyroid cancer is the most common cancer to affect the endocrine system. While many cancers have decreased in prevalence, ThyCa: Thyroid Cancer Survivors’ Association, Inc. indicates incidence rates for thyroid cancer have increased in recent years. The American Cancer Society expects thyroid cancer deaths to increase to 2,200 in 2021 out of an estimated 44,280 people affected by thyroid cancer. Unlike most other adult cancers, thyroid cancer is commonly diagnosed at a younger age. Women are three times more likely to develop thyroid cancer than men. Thyroid cancer is largely treatable, most notably with the removal of a portion of the gland or the entire thyroid gland depending on cancer stage. People who have had their thyroids removed (thyroidectomy) will need to take daily thyroid hormone pills.

Here’s a tip * Fill your salt and pepper shakers a fourth of the way with uncooked white rice. Dry rice will allow the salt or pepper to flow more freely from the shaker. If your shaker is opaque, you can tell when it’s time to add more salt or pepper when the shaker starts to rattle. * Mark old toothbrushes with masking tape so you can tell the difference between cleaning brushes and those you use for your teeth. You can clean a toothbrush in the dishwasher. Put it with the silverware. * Because fabric softeners can leave residue on the dryer’s lint trap, clean yours out at least every other month. Just scrub with plain old soap and water. * “Add this to the list of wonderful cleaners for wood floors: tea. Just brew a couple of cups and use the tea as you would your regular wood floor cleaner. It’s nice and shiny afterward.” -- P.L. in Oregon

TRICKS TO KEEP FLORAL ARRANGEMENTS FRESH Get them in water quickly: Place the flowers in a vase or other vessel with water promptly after making the cuts. Some florists like to cut the stems under water to prevent air bubbles from forming in the stems. Choose an arrangement first, then cut and place the flowers in water quickly. This gives fresh arrangements a good chance to last awhile.

HOW TO HEAL FROM MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES THAT AROSE DURING THE PANDEMIC Ask for help. The pandemic was proof that it’s impossible to go it alone through difficult situations, so individuals should not hesitate to rely on loved ones as they recover. MHA notes that social support is crucial when healing from trauma and touts the value of sharing one’s story. Such sharing enables individuals to process their thoughts and feelings.

Historical Heirloom Afghan: A Tale of Craftsmanship and Community Spirit

I

BY COLLEEN FRESSIE, AVON LIBRARY SENIOR CLERK

n 1955, Normotta Yarn published the instructions for the Heirloom Afghan. As described in the notation to the pattern, this afghan had been created by Margareta Ohberg, shown in Women’s Day Magazine, and won first prize in a nationwide contest while being exhibited at the Eastern States Exposition. Dorothy Dunderdale started to follow the pattern for the Heirloom Afghan. She was able to crochet 35 of the squares and cross stitch the pattern for three of the houses, two of the center flowers, and two of the corner flowers before she died. Lisa Settle Dunderdale took charge of the afghan, giving it to her mother Gail Settle, who, in turn, offered it to the Avon Free Library’s Sit ‘N’ Knit Group to finish and donate it to the library as a fundraiser. As daunting as it was to set needle to the beautiful squares, the members of the group and many staff and community members outside the group rose to the challenge.

Starting in April 2023, the master needle workers, including Gail Settle, Eloise Puls, Kathy Barsz, Carol Cattone, Colleen Fressie, Mary Lathron, Grace Frenzel, Cathy Hancher, Pamela Bickford, and Linda Conrad spent over 350 hours during and outside of the weekly Sit ‘N’ Knit meetings, meticulously following the patterns for the afghan, each sharing her particular skills with the others. The group agreed that some of the buildings specified in Ohberg’s original pattern should be replaced with buildings that are special to the Avon Community. Pamela Bickford turned one of the building patterns into our library and Gail Settle created the Opera

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Block Pattern. The group also agreed that a center square would reflect the time and place of the undertaking: Avon Free Library, 2023. Besides needlepointing squares, Linda Conrad crocheted the border and Mary Lathron secured the backing. This was truly a “Community” project!

The library is raffling this afghan off this winter. Tickets are available at the Avon Library, and the drawing will be held during the Avon Holiday Spectacular.

How physical activity can help in the fight against breast cancer

Breast cancer is a complex disease that affects millions of women across the globe each year. Though the American Cancer Society (ACS) reports that only about 4 percent of women diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States are under age 40, women of all ages can take steps to protect themselves against this deadly disease. Exercise benefits women in a myriad of ways, and that includes lowering their risk for breast cancer. The ACS notes that researchers are increasingly linking exercise to a reduced risk for breast cancer. Though the reasons behind that link remain unclear, some theorize that the positive effects of exercise on body weight, inflammation, hormones, and energy balance could be why regular physical activity helps women reduce their risk of breast cancer. Body weight and breast cancer The National Cancer Institute reports that being obese after menopause can significantly increase a woman’s risk for breast cancer. In addition, the ACS attributes the rise in hormone receptor-positive breast cancers to an increased prevalence of excessive body weight. Routine exercise is a highly effective way to lose weight and keep weight off, which in turn could lower women’s risk for breast cancer.

Does physical activity really reduce breast cancer risk? The human body is complex, and a host of factors, including those like age that women have no control over, can affect cancer risk. However, engaging in routine physical activity seems to be an effective way for women to reduce their risk for breast cancer. In fact, the Breast Cancer Research Foundation estimates that one-third of all breast cancer cases could be prevented with positive lifestyle choices that help women maintain a healthy weight, including exercise.

Routine physical activity can be a significant weapon in women’s arsenal as they continue their efforts to prevent and overcome breast cancer.

Being sedentary and breast cancer Exercise is a not a sedentary activity, and that could be another reason why women who are physically active have a lower risk for breast cancer. The ACS notes that more than one study has linked sitting time to a higher risk of various diseases, including breast cancer. Researchers with the ACS analyzed data from 77,462 women, who they followed for an average of 15.8 years.

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

None of the participants had cancer when the study started, but researchers found that women who sat for six or more hours per day during their free time had a 10 percent greater risk for invasive breast cancer than women who sat for less than three hours per day during free time.

Many students believe that the next natural step after graduating from high school is to go off to college. Secondary education has become such a common transition that many parents begin saving for college tuition as soon as their children are born. Although college can be the next chapter in a student’s education, many teenagers still choose to attend trade school. Television personality Mike Rowe says the country is in the midst of a skilled labor shortage because workers lack the necessary training to fill the hundreds of thousands of available jobs. Lack of information may drive the notion that trade jobs are nothing more than a backup plan if college doesn’t pan out. However, by realizing that trade jobs, along with short-term vocational training, is a smart investment - and eventually a lucrative career choice - attitudes about trade schools and laborintensive jobs may shift. A great number of college graduates enter the workforce with degrees that may not help them land jobs. And these students typically carry thousands of dollars in tuition debt. Many college grads are underemployed and working in jobs that aren’t even in their fields of study. Career and technical schools help students develop specialized skills that make graduates immediately marketable in their chosen fields, and trade salaries can be very competitive.

TAKE A CUE FROM SUCCESSFUL WOMEN Make time for exercise. A sluggish body can make for a sluggish mind. Successful people need to be sharp, and exercise can help them maintain their mental focus. According to John J. Ratey, Ph.D., a clinical associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, muscles send hormones rushing to the brain where they mix with a substance called brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF. BDNF plays a role in brain cell growth and learning. Without it, brains can’t absorb new information or grow and learn. Exercise also helps relieve stress, which can make resolutions easier to see and make tasks less overwhelming.
