Refresh Your Home for Spring Get rid of grime A whole season’s worth of dirt and dust accumulates during the cold winter months. A deep clean inside and out can restore your home to its former glory. Inside, take time to launder all of your linens, including curtains, rugs and bedding. Move furniture to vacuum behind and below, and don’t overlook dust and dirt magnets like mirrors, light fixtures and the insides of cabinets, especially higher shelves that see infrequent use. Outdoors, hose off or power-wash surfaces like windows, siding, decks and concrete to restore a crisp, clean appearance.

Create a spooky ambiance: The fear of the unknown can be a powerful force. In many horror scenes, suspense is built by what audiences cannot see. Borrow this idea when creating the mood for your haunted house. Dim lighting by way of red or black outside bulbs will help increase the shadows and camouflage any decorations that may not be completely realistic in the light of day. In addition to lighting, create a playlist of creepy sounds. Consider how effective those grandfather clock bell tolls were at evoking fear in season four of “Stranger Things.” Pick your spooky sounds, whether it’s animals or something more supernatural.

PAW’S CORNER Acid Reflux May be the Culprit in Cat’s Digestive Issues DEAR PAW’S CORNER: In regard to your recent article on a cat’s constant vomiting: I had the same issue with my cat. Stella was vomiting once or twice a day for several weeks. I couldn’t figure out why; there was no issue with new rugs or furniture. When they sprayed the lawns in our complex, I made sure not to track anything into the house. And Stella was an indoor cat, so she wasn’t being exposed to other cats. I got her in to see her vet, who ran tests and blood work and found nothing seriously wrong. The vet said that Stella might have GERD (acid reflux), and to give her one-quarter of a 10 mg famotidine pill each day. I cut each pill into fourths and give it to her in the morning with a little treat. It works perfectly; Stella no longer vomits repeatedly and has been doing well for the past two years. She gets a check-up every year at the vet and comes through with flying colors. Perhaps the owner could run this possibility by her vet and see what they think! -- Sande G., Webster, New York DEAR SANDE: That is certainly a possibility! Readers, be sure to check in with the veterinarian if your cat suffers from symptoms such as vomiting frequently or signs of distress after eating like excessive meowing or howling. Acid reflux is one possibility, but as Sande noted, it’s important to rule out more serious conditions. Be sure to ask plenty of questions at the vet’s office. Over-the-counter medications are a possibility, but keep in mind that formulations for humans contain larger dosages than a cat needs and may contain ingredients that are not great for your pets. The vet can advise you best.

Breast Cancer
FAQ The World Health Organization reports that roughly 2.3 million women were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2020. By the end of that year, there were nearly eight million women alive who had been diagnosed with the disease in the previous half decade. A breast cancer diagnosis inevitably leads to questions about the disease. The bulk of those questions undoubtedly are asked by the millions of women who are diagnosed with breast cancer. But millions more individuals, including friends and family members of recently diagnosed women, may have their own questions. Women can discuss the specifics of their diagnosis with their physicians. In the meantime, the following are some frequently asked questions and answers that can help anyone better understand this potentially deadly disease.
What is breast cancer? Cancer is a disease marked by the abnormal growth of cells that invade healthy cells in the body. Breast cancer is a form of the disease that begins in the cells of the breast. The National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) notes that the cancer can then invade surrounding tissues or spread to other areas of the body.
Can exercise help to reduce my breast cancer risk? The NBCF notes that exercise strengthens the immune system and women who commit to as little as three hours of physical activity per week can begin to reduce their risk for breast cancer. However, even routine exercise does not completely eliminate a woman’s risk of developing breast cancer.
Is there a link between diet and breast cancer?
Is there a link between oral contraceptives and breast cancer? The NBCF reports that women who have been using birth control pills for more than five years are at an increased risk of developing breast cancer. However, the organization notes that risk is very small because modern birth control pills contain low amounts of hormones.
Can breastfeeding reduce breast cancer risk? Breastfeeding and breast cancer are linked, though the NBCF notes that the role breastfeeding plays in lowering cancer risk depends on how long a woman breastfeeds. The World Cancer Research Fund International notes that evidence indicates that the greater number of months women continue breastfeeding, the greater the protection they have against breast cancer.
Is there a connection between stress & breast cancer? The NBCF notes that researchers have found that traumatic events and losses can alter how the immune system functions, which can provide an opportunity for cancer cells to establish themselves within a person’s body. The NBCF urges women to identify ways to keep their stress levels in check. Breast cancer education can be a valuable asset as women seek to reduce their risk for the disease.
The organization Susan G. Komen®, a nonprofit source of funding for the fight against breast cancer, reports that studies have shown eating fruits and vegetables may be linked to a lower risk for breast cancer, while consuming alcohol is linked to an increased risk for the disease. In addition, the NBCF reports that a high-fat diet increases breast cancer risk because fat triggers estrogen production that can fuel tumor growth.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 69-year-old who used to walk up 75 to 90 flights of steps several days a week as exercise. After a steering wheel airbag went off and damaged my heart, I am afraid my ability to do that stopped. After years of medication, I am now on a pacemaker, which definitely helps. Could the exercise have weakened my heart to such a degree that it could be viewed as overdoing it, therefore exacerbating my condition? -- Anon. ANSWER: In general, exercise does not harm the heart. On the contrary, exercise is almost always good for the heart. However, there are exceptions. In healthy people, there is an optimal amount of exercise, and extreme levels of exercise (on the order of running more than 10 miles a day every day) begin to decrease the benefit that a person gets from exercise. (This remains controversial, but I am convinced from the data.) In people with severe heart disease (the kind with blockages in the arteries), overdoing exercise can lead to a heart attack, but this is an exception. For every person who gets harmed by overexercising, there must be a hundred who don’t get adequate exercise. The fact that you have improved a lot on the pacemaker suggests that at least part of your problem wasn’t with the pump function of your heart, nor with the arteries leading to your heart. The problem lies with the electrical supply. Once a pacemaker is in, that problem is immediately alleviated, but the heart may still be deconditioned (“out of shape”). Regular exercise will help the problem. Your cardiologist can better answer the question for you and also give you advice on how to build up your exercise tolerance over time.
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT NERVE INJURIES What causes peripheral nerve injuries? Johns Hopkins Medicine indicates that peripheral nerve injuries can occur after suffering a laceration (a cut or tear in the nerve tissue), severe bruising, stretching, electrical injury, or drug injection injury. Gunshot wounds also can cause peripheral nerve injuries.

Generally speaking, the leaf-viewing season begins in late September and runs through early November for much of North America. Peak times for viewing depend on areas of travel and time of year. For large swaths of Canada and the United States, plan trips for late-September to mid-October. The Weather Channel offers maps and charts at www.weather.com/maps/fall-foliage for the peak times for many areas of the U.S.

Once you do that, drain them so no water is sitting in the pipes when temperatures dip.

Allison Fowler: A Symphony of Kindness and Positivity BY SUZIE WELLS
A
llison Fowler embodies the essence of kindness and positivity, a testament to the remarkable person she is. A Honeoye FallsLima native, Allison holds a Bachelor’s in music education from SUNY Potsdam and a Master’s in music education from Boston University. She treasures her journey, even with its unexpected paths, and she now lends her expertise to her husband Shaun’s business, Friendly Neighborhood Bookkeeping, while also running her own tax service, Friendly Neighborhood Tax Service. Involved with Avon’s New Horizon Church, the Ugandan Water Project, and other communitybased projects, Allison loves small town life. She says, “There isn’t a ton of privacy, but being in a place where people are willing to give and receive help is very beautiful.” Now an accomplished musician, Allison explains her early influences: “I wanted to play piano since I was a tiny girl because my Grandma Vione played beautifully. She would play Chopin, Joplin, or just hymns that she’d ‘fancy up.’ I could listen to her all day. Once I started playing when I was ten, I was just as hard to get to practice as other kids, so I’m grateful to my mom for keeping on my case about it.” This early joy in music was enriched by experiences like performing at Lincoln Center with the HFL Jazz band. She says the ineffable energy of her high school band teacher, Mark Borden, inspired her to pursue music education; she says, “I couldn’t imagine doing anything else.” A few years ago, when Lyme disease and an autoimmune disorder left her feeling very depressed, Allison dragged herself out to see one of her favorites, Trombone Shorty, at the Jazz Festival. Allison and Ella en route to She explains that while Trombone Shorty concert. there, she “felt the cloud of depression just lift off of me,” and she vowed to get back into making music and particularly perform uplifting music and bringing a little of the joy she felt that day to listeners. With expertise in clarinet, alto sax, and reasonable experience with flute, trombone, euphonium, trumpet, horn, and percussion, Allison plays bass in the Rochester area band, Random Accents, who play “a random mix of songs from Motown through current pop hits.” She says the band has such fun playing together, and she and Shaun, who learned to run sound for the band, feel “like we’re having a party every time we have a gig.” Allison loves the friendly, supportive, fun vibes at local venues and encourages folks to check out some of the incredible live music around town.
Allison says she doesn’t feel qualified to offer general life advice (though this writer disagrees), but shares some values her household tries to live by: 1. We’re a team: we all work together to create the life we want. 2. Stay curious: you don’t know everything, there’s always more to learn, and asking questions shows people you value them. 3. We’re problem solvers: we have control over nothing but our own responses to the world around us. So, we show up, try to respond gracefully, and leave things better than we found them! 4. Choose kindness: you already have something in common with everyone – we’re all humans. You don’t have to agree with someone on everything to be kind and have a great conversation. 5. Strangers are friends you haven’t met yet: most people are too shy to start the conversation, so if you want to make a friend take it upon yourself. And try not to leave anyone out. She also says, “Making your selfworth dependent on your career, relationships, finances, or other external sources will ultimately disappoint. I think coming at the parts of your life from this place of having value just because you’re human allows you to make choices for the benefit of your self and your family.” Such sage words from an incredible human being. May we all strive to be as kind, compassionate, and confident as Allison. Check out RandomAccentsBand.com for information on upcoming shows, and celebrate the joy of music with friends and friends you haven’t met yet. Also: the band’s lead singer just moved out of state, so they actively seek singers, especially those who play an instrument, so if you or someone you know wants to audition, contact the band.
Allison loves playing to crowds because of what she calls the Music Feedback Loop, where the crowd’s response amplifies the musicians’ energy, creating an electric atmosphere that persists until the last note of the night. “Live music is a very unique, fun experience from both the listener and performer perspective,” she says.

To budding musicians, Allison offers the following advice: “Don’t stop. There will always be better musicians, but that doesn’t mean there’s no place for you. I think that music is more about creating a group experience than being ‘perfect.’ I tell this to myself also!”

DID YOU KNOW? It is impossible to identify the first Halloween costume and which masks the earliest celebrants donned in efforts to keep away the evil spirits during Samhain, which historians believe is the Celtic precursor to Halloween. According to Lesley Bannatyne, an author who has written extensively about the history of Halloween, masks and coverups were designed to symbolize ghosts and the souls of the dead, first for Samhain and later for the custom of “souling,” which was intended to cut back on pagan influences. Costumes of saints and evil spirits also were popular during this time. When immigrants brought Halloween customs to North America, early 20th century costumes featured much of the same - ghosts and ghouls. It wasn’t until the 1920s and 1930s that pop culture began to infiltrate costumes. In fact, one of the first costume companies, J. Halpern Company, began licensing pop culture images like Mickey Mouse and Popeye around this time. By the 1960s, costumes were largely store-bought, spurring entire industries. Many 1980s kids recall buying boxed costumes that consisted of rigid plastic masks with eye holes (and very small holes by the mouth and nose) that stayed in place with thin elastic straps, and a plastic sheeting costume that went over clothes. Modern costumes have evolved into outfits that are far more complex.

A LOOK AT THE OLDEST HALLOWEEN TRADITION Bonfire: Historians trace many traditions of Halloween to a Celtic holiday known as Samhain (pronounced sow-in). The Celts lived 2,000 years ago in parts of what is now Northern France, Great Britain and Ireland. During Samhain, people believed that the door between the worlds of the living and the dead was blurred. On Samhain, Celts believed the ghosts of the dead returned. Also, Druids made predictions about the future at this time of year. It was customary to build large, sacred bonfires and burn crops and other sacrifices to the Celtic deities. While large bonfires are not typically part of Halloween celebrations today, revelers can light fire pits in their yards that are reminiscent of ancient celebrations.

Here’s a tip • If you have trouble opening the lid on glass jars, try using a pair of standard dishwashing gloves. They work to grip both the lid and the jar. They work especially well if your hands are the least bit moist. -- D.Y. in Pennsylvania • Save your old tissue boxes. They can be used to store plastic grocery store bags for easy use. They can then be stacked up and stored orderly. I use mine for garbage bags. • If you start now purchasing or making a gift or two each week, you could have more than a dozen Christmas presents taken care of before December even begins. It’s a good way to ease the pressure on your time and your wallet. -- L.S. in Indiana Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. (c) 2023 King Features Synd., Inc.

Oversight To the lady at the garage sale in LeRoy on Saturday, Oct. 7 - I have your overpayment. Please stop by and get it or you can contact the Penny Saver. Spooky and Fun! This year’s display of scarecrows on Main Street in Victor are very creative- well done!! What a difference! A Childcare Center in my town recently updated the exterior of its building and grounds. Its colors went from dark and dreary to bright and cheerful. It’s not only an improvement for the business, it’s a bright spot in our downtown that makes me smile every time I drive by! Small Town Happiness Fall in our small towns is one of my favorite times. Between the decorations, scarecrow contests, mums and pumpkins there is so much to make you enjoy the season!

DID YOU KNOW? According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the U.S. Department of Labor and data from the U.S. Census Bureau, registered nurse is the most common occupation for women in the United States labor force. Slightly less than 2.1 million women worked as registered nurses in 2017, the most recent year for which statistics are available. Such figures are harder to come by in regard to Canada, but Statista reports that the labor participation rate among women in Canada in 2018 was right around 64 percent. That rate marks a slight decrease from its 21st century peak in 2005, when 66.7 percent of women were active members of the Canadian workforce. In the United States, more than two million women worked as secretaries or administrative assistants in 2017, making these professions the second most common occupation among female workers. Elementary and middle school teachers was the third most common occupation for female professionals, employing more than 1.9 million women in 2017. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau also indicates that women have the lion’s share of jobs in an assortment of professions, including preschool and kindergarten teachers, secretaries and administrative assistants, childcare workers, and dental assistants. DID YOU KNOW? According to Gallup’s 2021 Economy and Personal Finance survey, the average individual in the United States is retiring earlier than many people might expect. Gallup found that the average retirement age was 62, which is two years earlier than the working respondents indicated they planned to retire. Canadians are retiring a little bit later than their American counterparts, as Statistics Canada reports the average retirement age in Canada is just over 63 and a half. The average retirement age is worth noting, as studies routinely find that many working professionals greatest concern about retiring is that they won’t have enough money saved to meet their needs. By recognizing that they may end up retiring earlier than they initially planned, professionals can make a concerted effort to save more money in the years ahead.
TOW TRUCK DRIVER Full and Part-time positions. Must have experience in light duty towing and recovery, light service work. No CDL required. Must have a tow endorsement and clean driver’s license. For more information apply at: M&R Automotive Service Geneseo, NY or send resume to: mras1automotive@gmail.com CONSERVE ENERGY AROUND THE OFFICE Conservation methods can help save energy and preserve natural resources, but business owners may also be intrigued by the potential cost-savings of conservation. Utility costs vary depending on the size of a business, but the U.S. Small Business Administration notes that prospective business owners must estimate and include such costs when seeking loans to start their businesses. Estimated utility costs can be intimidating, especially for those owners who have never before owned their own businesses. Traditional conservation methods like recycling and reusing are great ways to conserve and save around the office, but business owners also can embrace some other ways to lower their office energy costs while benefitting the planet at the same time.

HOW TO KEEP KIDS SAFE ON HALLOWEEN Keep weekdays in mind: Halloween falls on a Monday in 2022 and that could be more dangerous than if it fell on a weekend. According to Autoinsurance.com, which conducted a study that analyzed 24 years’ worth of data provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), injuries to children and pedestrians in general were higher on weeknight than weekend holidays, with most accidents occurring between 6 p.m. and 7 pm - prime commuter time. Exercise extreme caution walking around this year.
