etter Homes, located at 13 Ossian Street in Dansville, NY, has quite a spooky history. Todd Pike, who has worked with Better Homes for 20 years, explained that the building has been used as a furniture store since it was built in 1923. However, its early years included something a little out of the ordinary. Not only was the building a furniture store, but it was also used as a funeral home!

Active Living 50+ ____________________33

There isn’t much information to be found on the family that owned this original dual business, but we do know that the basement housed the funeral home’s crematorium. It was common during the early 1900s to use one location for more than one business, no matter how unrelated those two businesses may have been. In this case, you could have been shopping for a couch as you attended a relative’s funeral!

While the Ossian Street building has been a furniture store for nearly 100 years, Better Homes has been in it only for the most recent 25, that is, in its post-funeral parlor days. Nevertheless, employees have had some frights over the years. A few of the staff members once watched a whole box of light bulbs fly right off a shelf…all by itself!

Classifieds ____________________42 Employment ____________________36

Although no actual ghosts have ever been seen on the premises, plenty have been heard. Based on a first-hand account from Todd Pike, he has heard footsteps upstairs in the building when no one else was there. “It sounds like someone walking around,” he said. “But I never see anything or anyone.”

Garage Sales ____________________26

The creepy feeling from this unknown could send chills up anyone’s spine! According to Pike, everyone who works at the business has experienced eerie sounds and unexplained occurrences except for the owner’s wife, Pam Horton. At least…she hasn’t yet.

Give & Take ____________________19 Home Services ____________________28 Hometown Events ____________________12

Sometimes, previous employees of the building’s furniture stores of yesteryear come by and tell stories of their Historic photo of the Ossian Street storefront own experiences from many years ago. Nevertheless, Better Homes owners Bill and Pam Horton take their building’s colorful lore in good humor. Undaunted, they continue to supply quality products to area homes.

This November, Better Homes is celebrating 25 years of successful business in its “spirited” historical building. In fact, their anniversary specials just may give you shivers…of excitement! While Better Homes can’t promise any supernatural sightings, it is happy to offer “scary” good deals.

HALLOWEEN SUPERSTITIONS REVEALED Halloween is steeped in tradition. Halloween season also is a time of year when superstitions take root and add to the spooky and often silly nature of the holiday. Some Halloween traditions can be traced back to the ancient Celts and their belief that spirits of the deceased were able to wander the earth during the time they called Samhain. Costumes were worn so the living could blend in with ghosts, and treats were laid out to appease the spirits. Over the years, additional Halloween superstitions have emerged.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Keep Halloween Candy Away From Pets DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Halloween is upon us again, and while the tricks and treats are fun for kids, they can be dangerous for our pets. Please remind your readers that the candies and chocolates in a trick-or-treat bag or sitting by the door are hazardous because many of the ingredients are toxic to dogs and cats. -- Cheryl T., Lansing, Michigan DEAR CHERYL: You’re absolutely right! Dogs especially are at risk from ingesting Halloween candy, but any pet in the house can be at risk from not just these foods but some popular decorations as well. Chocolate is toxic to dogs. Sugar-free candies can be toxic as well, especially if they contain xylitol. Keep all candy, chocolate and gum out of pets’ reach during the festivities. Afterward, store leftover candy up out of their reach. Make sure children don’t hide bags of candy where a pet can get at them, such as under the bed. Help them find a location that they can access but the dog can’t. Decorations may be a hazard as well, not just to your pets but to wildlife. That stretchy material used to create fake spiderwebs outdoors can trap birds and insects. Cats may ingest the strands if they are fascinated with the texture. Avoid burning real candles as they may get knocked over by a pet. If your pet does get into the candy bowl or eats a decoration, contact the veterinarian right away. They’ll advise you whether to bring your pet in right away for treatment, or to watch for signs of illness (such as constant drooling, vomiting, lethargy or changes in personality).

HALLOWEEN HISTORY Halloween may seem like a relatively modern holiday, and while it may have become modernized, Halloween traditions actually can be traced back to ancient Celtic rituals. It’s believed Halloween traces its origins to a Celtic festival for the dead known as Samhain. During the festival, people would dress up in costumes and leave treats on their front doorsteps to appease spirits that were believed to be roaming the Earth on this holiday. Many historians also feel that trickor-treating can be linked to the European practice of “mumming” or “guysing,” in which costumewearing individuals would go door-to-door, performing dances and plays in exchange for treats.

DID YOU KNOW? Despite the ongoing efforts to study cancer and cancer treatments, in many ways the disease remains a mystery to researchers and medical professionals alike. According to data published by the research-based healthcare company Roche, for reasons that are not entirely understood, breast cancer is more common in the left breast than the right. The left breast is 5 to10 percent more likely to develop cancer than the right breast. The left side of the body is also 10 percent more vulnerable to the skin cancer melanoma than the right side of the body.

Choosing Not to Treat Prostate Cancer

Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology

---

DEAR DR. ROACH: Every year, I used to get a physical, which included a prostate exam as well as blood tests with PSA. When my doctor retired, I had a hard time finding a new one I liked. It has been three or four years since my prostate was checked, but my new doctor doesn’t do the prostate exams (I am 63). He says that recent studies do not recommend them, and I have seen news reports about the unreliability of the PSA test. How do you find out if you have prostate cancer if you don’t look for it? My brother-in-law found out he had it at 52, and it was successfully treated. I don’t really want to wait until I am showing symptoms, and there is no history in my direct family. What do you think about this? -- T.D. ANSWER: Prostate cancer isn’t really one disease. It can be very aggressive -- both with local invasion and spreading to bones quickly -- but it also can be very indolent, hardly growing at all over years. Yearly prostate cancer screening with PSA is more likely to find the slower-growing cancers, since they are around for a long time. The goal of screening is to find aggressive cancers, the fast-growing ones that can go from undetectable to too-late-to-do-anything-about in a very short time. But a downside is that screening may lead to unnecessary treatment of the more-indolent cancers, most of which can be carefully monitored and will not need surgery or radiation, at least not for years. If a man elects to undergo prostate cancer screening, he should understand the benefits (finding prostate cancer early enough it can be cured) and the risks (treatment for prostate cancer causes complications frequently; these can include incontinence and loss of sexual function). Not treating low-risk prostate cancer reduces the risks. Low-risk prostate cancer is defined by a PSA below 10, a very small or non-detectable tumor by palpation or imaging and a low Gleason score, which is based on how the tissue looks to the pathologist. Six or less is low risk. Most men in this situation do not need immediate treatment. Some men have difficulty NOT treating cancer, but treatment does not appear to improve the already good prognosis. Choosing not to treat is hard for some men.

ELSIE’S STEWED APPLES Serves 6 to 8 2 to 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 pounds apples, peeled, cored and cut into thick slices 1/2 cup honey, preferably sage honey 1/2 cup white wine Zest of 1 lemon Juice of 1 lemon Fresh sage sprigs for garnish 1. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the apples, turn the heat to high and sauté until they begin to brown on the edges, about 5 minutes. If some are getting too well done, remove them and place on a plate while the rest continue to cook, then return them to the skillet when all are done. 2. Reduce the heat to low and add the honey, wine, lemon zest, lemon juice, and 1/2 cup water. Cover and allow to cook until the apples are tender but still firm; you don’t want them to turn into applesauce. 3. Serve this in a bowl, tuck in a couple sprigs of fresh sage from your garden, and tell your guests all about sage honey.

S E V RA Wren lesson congratulations! Thank you and congratulations to the person who was corrected about the nesting habits of wrens. So many today take umbrage and become angry at anyone who doesn't totally agree with them or who finds fault with them. This person's gracious response lightened my day almost as much as watching those creatures who inhabit our environment with us. Thank you, Dr. Krisy, and staff "It's another trip to York Veterinary Clinic for me. I have been paralyzed since January, but now, I am back to 95% walking and running! Dr. Krisy and staff (and my mom) are awseome! Thanks to therapy from Dr. Krisy, I can walk with just a little limp, and I can scratch my ears now with help from mom or dad. At the vet, Dr. Krissy and each tech and staff member called me by name. Their love and kindness made me wag my tail. My mom and I don't have enough words to say thank you for an awesome job. God bless you and keep up the good work! “ - Symon Wren update If you can bear to read one last comment about the birds in the Penny Saver tube: I decided the birds weren't actually going to use the nest, so I removed the twigs and discovered, tucked into the back corner, the sweetest little nest, all woven with fine twigs and feathers. It was, to my mind, a perfect nest but a terrible location (roadside). I hope the lady wren found as nice a nest somewhere to her liking. Livonia Library Book Sale I would like to thank everyone involved in the Livonia Library Book Sale! It was fabulous! Thank you to the beautiful lady who helped carry my purchases to my car. Your sale made my day. The Livonia Library rocks! - Mary

Zero not Hero? For shame! You should be ashamed of yourself, calling hospital and medical workers "zeroes." They have worked countless hours from the very beginning, sacrificing their time with friends, their families, and their own safety without the vaccine. They deserve the same inherent rights as you do, including the right to decide what is best for themselves and their families. Are you aware that even if you are vaccinated, you can still pass the virus on to that child you mentioned? Before you point fingers, why don't you consider that you could just as easily pass it on to someone else? How dare you think you have the right to call out these incredible people who worked throughout this entire pandemic? They need and deserve our support! Instead of telling people to quit and retire from careers they love, why don't you move to someplace [where] they would appreciate your willingness to take away people's rights to their bodies...? RN Zero This is all you need to know. "Evidence suggests the U.S. COVID-19 vaccination program has substantially reduced the burden of disease in the United States by preventing serious illness in fully vaccinated people and interrupting chains of transmission." - CDC. You need a refresher course. Immunity is your own body? No medical professional should put any patient at risk with anything in any way. Thank God you are retired, or I would say to get out of this profession! I know many people who don't want a nurse like you taking care of them, especially with your attitude. Coaching Kids I understand all volunteers are working so hard to give our children wonderful experiences. However, if you sign up for that position, please really want to do it and invest in it. A couple weekends ago, an organization came to our school for a game, and it seemed like there was no adult coach for the juniors team around anywhere. A couple young girls were running the squad. I overheard what sounded just like bullying from the one child helper to another girl in the squad, instead of coaching. The coach was nowhere to be found to intervene. Young girls aren’t ready to be coaches of other young girls yet. They need an adult around. Coach the older girls to be helpers and make sure the young ones are learning but also not being bullied or hurt. Let’s help them to feel safe and want to come back and learn again next year.

AUTO SECTION

CONSERVE FUEL DURING YOUR DAILY COMMUTE Drive a vehicle with stop/ start technology. Stop/start systems, in which engines shut off automatically when drivers brake and restart automatically when the driver lifts his or her foot off the brake pedal, can make more efficient use of fuel. Once exclusive to hybrid cars, stop/start technology is now more widely available and can cut back on fuel consumption and vehicle emissions. That’s especially attractive to ecoconscious commuters who live in big cities where stop-andstart traffic is unavoidable. What’s more, many modern air conditioning compressors operate off electricity and not via a car’s engine, meaning vehicles with stop/start technology will stay cool in the summer even when the engine shuts off.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Doctors who perform laparoscopic surgery, which involves inserting a tiny camera into a patient’s body through a small incision, have better coordination if they play video games at least three hours per week. According to a 2003 study, gamer surgeons made 37% fewer errors and worked 27% faster than those whose only “video game” experience was the surgery itself.

CREATE AN ENDURING MEMORIAL FOR A LOVED ONE Plant a tree. Trees have long symbolized life and wisdom. Trees can live for dozens of years, growing larger and more vibrant with each year that passes. Planting a tree in a loved one’s name will create a beautiful respite that people can visit and enjoy. A small plaque or another type of sign can feature the name of the person being memorialized.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * The oleander is the official flower of the city of Hiroshima. It was the first to bloom again after the explosion of the atomic bomb in 1945. Charlton Heston was cast as Moses in the 1956 blockbuster movie “The Ten Commandments” partly because he resembled Michelangelo’s famous statue of Moses. * The term “coccyx” (more familiarly known as your tailbone) is derived from the Greek word kokkux, or “cuckoo,” because its curved shape resembles the bird’s beak. * Benjamin Franklin introduced tofu to America in 1770.

HOW TO RAKE LEAVES M ORE EFFICIENTLY Remember to rake dow nw ind. It is a good idea to save raking for a day w hen it is not too breezy; otherw ise, you may end up raking the same spots over and over. Handle small spots at one time and rake the leaves into small piles. Then you can easily transfer the leaves to a tarp or bag and set aside for disposal or deposit them into your compost heap.

REMEDY LANDSCAPE DRAINAGE PROBLEMS In some instances, whether it’s a byproduct of poor property grade or sloping land, water can pool regardless of how well the gutter system is working. Determine where the problem is and speak with a landscaper to see if there are any plants that thrive in moist conditions. The roots of these plants can protect against soil erosion and may absorb enough water to guard against puddling. In addition, amending the soil with organic matter, pea gravel or another coarse aggregate can prevent water pooling.

Benson Roll-off

585-967-7919 MAKE FLOORS SHINE LIKE NEW Restoring shine to flooring involves making sure the floor is clean. Dirt and grime can diminish the color and look of flooring. Homeowners are urged to use products designed for their particular flooring material, such as wood, laminate, stone, or vinyl. Products oftentimes are not interchangeable. Begin by thoroughly sweeping or vacuuming the floor. Clean along all surfaces of the floor, including under furniture where dust and dirt tends to accumulate. Use the hard-floor setting on a vacuum to avoid having the brush rolls scratch or damage the flooring. Laminate can scratch easily and hardwood flooring is not impervious to dings and scratches. Quite often a dry mop or a static-charged mopping cloth effectively picks up debris left behind on many flooring surfaces. Although many commercial cleaners can clean flooring, homemade mopping solutions are sometimes just as effective. Keep in mind that wood, laminate and vinyl should not be soaked in water. A little liquid can go a long way on these surfaces. Water and other liquids can seep between laminate and wood boards, potentially contributing to swelling and damage over time. Also, resist the urge to use too much soap. Soap can leave behind a residue that dulls the finish of the floor. Vinegar-based solutions can work well on a wide variety of flooring types and help cut through any sticky residue left behind from cooking, cleaning and the activities of daily life. Many wood-flooring cleaners and polishes are oil-based to condition the wood in the process. Whenever making one’s own solution, test a small amount in an inconspicuous spot to make sure it will not damage the flooring.

Why I should not vote for Judith Hall…..so she can have a quiet, care free and happy life… so she would not be a victim of lies, unsound criticism and underhanded actions by those with personal vendettas and agendas… so she wouldn’t have to put up with people interrupting meetings with rude, obnoxious screaming and yelling. BUT….I WILL VOTE FOR JUDITH HALL because of her professional competence and business knowledge… her dedication to what is best for this town… her energy and stamina to push for what is in the best interest for EVERYONE in this town, within legal parameters, with no hidden agenda of what might better benefit her personally. This is a woman who came into the office of Supervisor with no transitional help from the former Supervisor or the clerk. A woman whose husband passed away one month after taking office and who received little to no compassion from the sitting board members. Yet she was back in the office two days after his death. A woman who is in the office on average 4 days a week and available to ALL 24/7. A woman synonymous with truth, honesty, intelligence, loyalty, and dedication! Yes, Judith Hall has my vote !

Leaves cascading dow n from trees indicate the arrival of autumn. How ever, colorful and aw e-inspiring autumn leaves can be a hazard if left to lie on the ground too long. Fallen leaves form a dense insulator to protect trees’ roots and prevent competing plants from grow ing. Decomposing leaves also provide nutrients for the tree. But w et leaves can be a safety hazard and leaves left on the law n through the w inter can pose a threat to the grass. These are just a couple of reasons w hy so much effort is placed on leaf clean-up in the fall.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles

Turkey or Ham? What is Thanksgiving going to look like this year? That’s a big question, and many of us don’t have the answers yet. Part of it depends on whether we’re still the ones cooking the turkey or whether that particular baton was passed years ago. Part of it depends on whether we’re close enough to relatives that they can drive over or whether somebody would be required to board a plane. Part of it depends on whether anyone present has a pre-existing condition that would make getting COVID especially risky. I’ve done an informal poll of those around me and scattered across the country. One person has flatly stated that his family will all be present with the triple garage turned into a big dining room. Another said it will be a repeat of last year with everyone in their own home with online meeting software running during dinner. Another is delivering a turkey dinner to her mother. Yet another is taking his parents out to a fancy buffet. Some say it all depends on whether everyone in the group has been vaccinated. Some don’t want to take the shot. Many refuse to be around those who didn’t take the shot. A few are leery of small children who aren’t eligible for the shot, but who are in school with others whose parents might or might not have gotten vaccinated. Or maybe there’s a teen who’s been released from home prison, as they’re calling it, and might or might not have been socially distancing from pals or wearing a mask, which might or might not work anyway. Then there’s the wee matter of breathing used air on planes and whether we’re sitting next to someone who sneaks off his mask when the stewardesses aren’t looking. It gets complicated, this business of calculating how to handle Thanksgiving. The biggest debate used to be: turkey or ham? (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * “Need a new look for a favorite sweater? Change out your buttons. It’s such a small thing, but makes a big change in look!” -- E.L. in Massachusetts * Instead of using costly brass polish, try a little lemon juice and salt. Another brass polish you probably have right now is ketchup. Apply a thin layer and buff off with a soft rag. * Experts say to always crack your egg on a flat surface, rather than using the edge of a counter or bowl. More egg-tastic advice is to crack eggs into a small bowl instead of directly into ingredients. If you have a sneaky “bad egg” in your dozen, it’s better to find out before you ruin your baking. * “I love to search for recipes online, and I have learned to pay attention to the comments section. You’ll find a lot of explanation and frequently a tweak that many people have found successful. Comments have saved me from oversalting a dish, as well as making necessary adjustments in temperature and cooking time. I have found complicated techniques broken down in ways that were helpful. It pays to check out the comments!” -- W.G. in Missouri * Attention salad eaters: Got a thick dressing that’s high in fat? Rinse lettuce before dressing your salad. Wet or moist lettuce traps less dressing. If your dressing is light, give salad greens an extra spin. Drier lettuce holds on to dressing, making lightly dressed salad more flavorful. * Another great use for baking soda: Add a cup or two to your toilet bowl. Swish and let sit for 1-2 hours. Flush for odor control and shine. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

DID YOU KNOW? How households earn their income has changed dramatically over the last several decades. According to a Pew Research Centeral analysis of the Decennial Census and American Community Surveys integrated Public Use Microdata Sample files, in 1960 only fathers worked in 70 percent of American households. That figure has dropped in each ensuing decade and by 2012 fathers were the sole earners in just 31 percent of American households. While one in four households in American were dual income households in 1960, by 2012 that figure had risen to 60 percent. While those figures represent dramatic changes, the number of households in which mothers are the sole earners has not changed all that much since 1960. In 1960, mothers were the sole earners in just 2 percent of American households. Fifty-two years later 6 percent of American households featured mothers as the sole earners. EMPLOYMENT

GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS Work-related stress is an all too common problem in workplaces across the globe. According to the American Institute of Stress, 80 percent of workers report feeling stress on the job. Perhaps most troubling, nearly half of those people admit they need help in learning how to manage their stress. The American Psychological Association notes that stressful work environments can contribute to a host of physical problems, including headache, sleep disturbances and short temper. Chronic stress can produce more serious consequences such as high blood pressure while also weakening sufferers’ immune systems. Stress at the workplace also can make it difficult to concentrate, which in turn can compromise workers’ abilities to perform at the peak of their abilities. That supports the notion that stress is a problem for both employees and employers. As a result, finding ways to reduce that stress should be a team effort. Getting a handle on stress can be difficult. Since so many people trace their stress to the jobs they need to get by, they might think it’s impossible to address that stress without derailing their careers. But there are a handful of ways for professionals to get a handle on their stress without negatively affecting their careers. EMPLOYMENT

WAYS ESTABLISHED PROFESSIONALS CAN IMPROVE THEIR RÉSUMÉS Rather than focusing on job responsibilities at each job you held, gear the résumé around what you achieved in each position. This will help identify how you performed in the position, instead of just a general retelling of what you did. It can be challenging to achieve this for jobs that don’t naturally lend themselves to numerically quantitative results (i.e., increased department sales by 15 percent), but it’s still possible to use a résumé to illustrate your achievements. Rather than state that you were responsible for providing customer service, explain that you built your reputation on conveying difficult technical terms to the layperson, serving as the go-to employee for translating job jargon for outside correspondence. If you have quantitative proof of how you accomplished something, certainly add it. This can include measures of profit growth, reduction of debt or increase in customer base.

DID YOU KNOW? Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures. EMPLOYMENT

WORKING PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE Set reasonable goals. Much of the difficulty men and women experience in regard to finding a healthy work-life balance may be a byproduct of working parents spreading themselves too thin. Setting reasonable goals can help avoid that, but doing so requires taking commitments to one’s employer and family into consideration before agreeing to take on new projects or setting deadlines for projects to be completed. This should be applied to both work and home. If a work deadline is unreasonable, professionals should discuss that with their employers, who might change the deadline or arrange for extra persons to work on the project. At home, parents should avoid taking on too many projects, such as chaperoning a child’s dance or coaching a sports team, if doing so will adversely affect the amount of time they get to spend with their families.
