STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * In the movie “Psycho’s” iconic shower scene, Alfred Hitchcock achieved the sound of stabbings by knifing through a casaba melon. He even had his crew audition multiple varieties of melon to get the perfect tone. * Folks who enjoy collecting ties are known as grabatologists. * Cinderella’s shoes were made of fur, not glass, in the tale’s original version. * In the Middle Ages, the “shrew’s fiddle” or “neck violin” was used to punish those who were caught bickering by linking them face-to-face, forcing them to talk to each

CASA-Trinity Opens Community Connection Center in Dansville BY AMY GESSI
C
ASA-Trinity, Inc. (Council on Alcohol and Substance Abuse of Livingston County) has opened a Community Connection Center at 134 Main Street in Dansville. On Friday, November 5th, the Community Connection Center held its Open House. “It went really well,” said CASA-Trinity, Inc. Director of Community Based Services Brittany Jimenez, noting that a wide variety of people and representatives of several local organizations attended. Jimenez was also pleased to see several active program members as well as some of their family members present. “It was a good turnout and stayed fairly packed,” she said. “We received a warm welcome. Our referring partners were very excited for us, and our consumers (active members) were really happy to have an alternative option for continuing their recovery and wellness journey once they are finished with treatment.” Recovery options can be slim. “Steuben and Livingston Counties really lack recovery services outside of some NA meetings, some of which are well-established while others are not. However, there has not been a single location to which people can go,” explained Jimenez. “People in recovery have had This is such community support but nothing an exciting this consistent and organized.” Jimenez further mentioned a addition to trend of increased focus on the Dansville recovery to round out prevention and treatment. “We have added a community! lot of different components,” she - Brittany Jimenez said, noting not only meetings, but also fitness, arts, and music. “We are opening up a variety of pathways to recovery, offering a safe space to connect and participate in healthy activities.” This new Dansville space will be the location for AIR (Adventures in Recovery) Program and Main Street Station Youth Clubhouse. This center will be a safe space for adults and kids to enjoy and have access to community support meetings, art and music, alternative and holistic wellness activities, a library with both recovery and leisure literature, a gym with both independent and group fitness options and more! The Community Connection Center will be open Monday–Friday from 10am-7pm. The AIR Adventures in Recovery Program is a community of sober individuals dedicated to providing connection, The Community Connection Center’s Open House peer support, and on Friday, November 5th, 2021, was a great success! healthy fun outlets for those in recovery, their family members, and those in the community who choose to live sober. We seek to empower those in recovery to build their community, discover their inner strength, and find their recovery path. For more information, please email ssmith@casa-trinity.org or visit their Facebook page, @AIRsoutherntier.

PREPARE YOUR LAWN & GARDEN FOR WINTER Apply a winterizing fertilizer. Winterizing fertilizers can help lawns store food they need to survive through winter and also can help them bounce back strong in spring. Such fertilizers are typically formulated for coolseason grasses such as fescue and bluegrass and are often best applied after the final cut of fall. Warm-season grasses go dormant in winter, so homeowners whose lawns contain these types of grasses won’t want to apply a winterizing fertilizer. Homeowners who don’t know which type of grass they have or are concerned about when to apply a winterizing fertilizer should consult with a lawncare professional before fertilizing.

585-967-7919 PREPARE YOUR LAWN & GARDEN FOR WINTER FALL LAWN CARE TIPS Aerate the turf. Aerating reduces soil compacting, facilitating the delivery of fertilizer and water to a lawn’s roots. While many homeowners, and particularly those who take pride in tending to their own lawns, can successfully aerate their own turf, it’s best to first have soil tested so you know which amendments to add after the ground has been aerated. Gardening centers and home improvement stores sell soil testing kits that measure the pH of soil, but homeowners who want to test for nutrients or heavy metals in their soil may need to send their samples to a lab for further testing. Mulch leaves. Falling leaves are a telltale sign that winter is coming. In lieu of raking leaves as they begin to fall, homeowners can mulch them into their lawns. Scotts®, an industry leader in lawn care, notes that mulching leaves is a great way for homeowners to recycle a natural resource and enrich the soil of their lawns. While it might not be possible to mulch fallen leaves in late autumn when they begin to fall en masse, doing so in the early stages of fall should be possible so long as the lawn is not being suffocated. Scotts® recommends mulching the leaves to dime-size pieces to a point where half an inch of grass can be seen through the mulched leaf layer.

DEAR READERS: My recent letter from a pet mom who strongly believes cats should be allowed outside really touched a nerve among readers. They sent in some great responses, both for and against. DEAR PAWS: I do not have a cat, but I would keep them indoors because of the dangers from and to them. And I do not let my dog run free either. -- Mary Ann C.

DEAR PAWS: I think a person who lets any of their pets roam freely outside is uncaring, selfish and inconsiderate. A dictionary says this of a pet: “any domesticated or tame animal that is kept as a companion and cared for affectionately.” -Signed, I love my pet

DEAR PAWS: Our pet cats still have an instinct to kill and be wild and free, just like big cats have. About the ticks: Just pull them off, put a little medicine on the bite, and that is that. -- Adrian M.

DEAR PAWS: I agree with you. I lost two inside/outside cats when living in Florida. One got killed in the road; one got killed by a neighbor’s dog. After that I kept cats inside. -- Linda K.

DEAR PAWS: I just can’t understand someone saying they “love having a cat,” but they certainly don’t seem to love the mess they leave in everyone else’s yards! -- Becky H.

RECOGNIZE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS Antibacterial products: Antibacterial soaps, lotions and wipes may contain triclosan, triclocarban and at least 17 additional ingredients that are linked to various negative health effects. In September 2016, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration banned the use of these antibacterial agents. These chemicals can disrupt hormone cycles and cause muscle weakness. “There’s no data demonstrating that over-the-counter antibacterial soaps are better at preventing illness than washing with plain soap and water,” the FDA said in a press release issued shortly after the rule was announced.
on pulmonary fibrosis. I especially appreciate knowing that there are medications known to slow the progression of lung disease, reduce exacerbations and reduce mortality. With a 20-year-old diagnosis of COPD and having been prescribed medications to reduce exacerbations, you might imagine my interest in your article. I’m wondering how pulmonary fibrosis differs from COPD and if the two medications that you mention (pirfenidone and nintedanib) might be helpful in slowing the progression of lung disease in patients such as myself. Have any studies been completed using these medications on patients with COPD? -- S.A. ANSWER: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease -- its two main forms are emphysema and chronic bronchitis -- usually, but not invariably, is a result of long-term exposure to lung toxins, especially smoke. In the most common case of COPD, due to cigarette smoking (at least, that’s the most common in North America and Europe: cooking fires are still a common cause in less developed countries), stopping the exposure will dramatically slow down further damage. Unfortunately, there are no established treatments that can restore lung function in people with moderate to advanced COPD. Pulmonary fibrosis is, by contrast, a rare disease; about 30,000 people in the U.S. are diagnosed each year (compare that with the 9 million people in the U.S. diagnosed with chronic bronchitis last year). The exact mechanism of action of pirfenidone and nintedanib is not known, but they are not thought to be effective in COPD. Surprisingly, I did not find a published trial looking at whether these drugs might be effective. The need for new therapies to treat COPD is so great that I would have thought some researcher might have tried it, despite the long odds. ***

SOY FOODS PACK A POWERFUL PUNCH The Cleveland Clinic notes that soy foods provide a host of nutritional benefits. Plant protein, including soy, can provide cardiovascular benefits, including helping with people with high blood pressure lower their blood pressure to healthier levels. While many people rely on animal-based proteins to get their daily recommended intake of protein, soy foods are naturally free of cholesterol and low in saturated fats. That makes soy foods more heart-healthy sources of protein than animal products. The Cleveland Clinic says substituting soy foods for animal-based proteins a few times per week can reduce a person’s risk for cardiovascular disease. Soy foods also can be a great source of dietary fiber, though the U.S. Soybean Export Council advises consumers that not all soy products are the same. The USSEC notes that foods like soy milk and tofu contain very little fiber. People who want to utilize soy beans as a source of dietary fiber should look to foods that utilize the whole bean, such tempeh, soy flour and textured soy protein. The USSEC also notes there’s some confusion in regard to the connection between soy foods and iron, though the group admits research is ongoing. While a 1/2 cup serving of cooked soybeans contains four milligrams of iron, the phytate and soy protein present in soy foods reduce iron absorption, meaning that the body won’t really benefit from the iron. However, the USSEC recommends consumers purchase fermented soy foods, including tempeh and miso, because the body might absorb more iron from these foods than it will when consuming other types soy foods. Inflammation can affect anyone, and those who have battled it likely have nothing positive to say. But while few people may associate inflammation with something good, inflammation is actually a process by which the body’s white blood cells and the substances those cells produce protect the body from infection at the hands of bacteria, viruses and other foreign organisms. While inflammation is protective by nature, sometimes an inflammatory response is triggered by mistake. When that happens, the body’s immune system, which is designed to protect the body, begins to damage its own tissues. The resulting symptoms of this faulty immune system response may include joint pain, joint stiffness, loss of function in the joints, and swelling of the joints. None of those symptoms are comfortable, and people suffering from them may be on the lookout for ways to alleviate their pain and suffering. While anyone battling persistent inflammation should speak with their physicians to explore their treatment options, a preliminary search of how to best treat inflammation will no doubt turn up information about heat therapy and cold therapy.

Modern cars are technological marvels, and it turns out drivers may value tech over all else, including their choice of automaker. A 2017 study from Autotrader asked 1,000 participants an assortment of questions about technology and car buying. Roughly 60 percent of millennial car shoppers and more than 40 percent of baby boomers indicated they would switch vehicle brands just to get the technology features they want. Drivers are even willing to pay extra for their preferred tech. The Autotrader study found that the average shopper would pay an extra $2,276 to get the right tech features.

Steuben County District #4 Wayland & Cohocton
Legislator’s Report It seems like I just sat down to write my 2020 report and suddenly November of 2021 is here and I am back at it. My how time flies. First, the most important news is that your Steuben County tax rate will once again be reduced by about 25 cents per thousand dollar of assessed valuation. This was accomplished by adding $1.7 million of additional sales tax revenue to the budget and a hefty increase in new assessments through the county. As you probably know, the County received $18.6 million from the Federal bail out monies allocation and of course every County department and every outside agency your County funds has submitted a wish list to help spend this new found revenue. However, my idea as to how to spend this money is to use the bulk of it to renovate and/or build new highway department shops in all parts of the County and to update the Transfer Station in Wayland. By spending these dollars on Capital improvement projects we will not have to add those costs to future County budgets and can save the County taxpayers budget increases, thereby holding down county taxes.
in the rural areas of the County are the most resistant to getting the vaccine. I myself received my vaccinations in Jan. and Feb. of 2021 and would urge all County residents to get theirs. Recently the County received the results of an Emergency Services study which takes a look at the lack of ambulance service throughout the County. As chairman of the Public Safety and Correction committees, my committee is reviewing the study and looking at the various options presented in the study to help solve this very important problem. As more information is available that information will be sent out to the news media to help inform the public. Two years ago the State passed legislation to install no cash bail and other measures in the criminal reform legislation. That, to say the least, has handcuffed the judges and police agencies as well as the District Attorney’s office in doing their elected jobs. One has to wonder where the common sense in all of this is. I would like to wish you all a happy and safe holiday season. If you have any questions or concerns involving county government, please call my office at 585-728-2270.
Covid-19 is still a major problem in the County and positive cases in the past few months have risen to the point of overburdening the hospitals with Covid-19 admissions. County residents are still getting vaccinated but the pace is very slow. It seems that those residents living GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Social Security Gets Big Benefits Bump The news is in. Our Social Security benefit for 2022 will increase by 5.9%, slightly less than the 6.1% estimate the government put out this summer. Still, that’s much greater than the 1.3% increase we saw for 2021 and the 1.6% the year before. The average monthly dollar increase will be $92, making the average benefit $1,657 per month for a single person. For a couple, a $154 increase would come to $2,753 per month. The official mail on the cost-of-living adjustment will come out in December. I’ve done my calculations for next year, and once again I shake my head. We’ve been notified already that I’ll have a rent increase. Heating fuel is likely to go up 47%. We all know what has happened at the grocery store. Medicare Part B is sure to go up, maybe a $10 per month increase. There is one worrying note, and we need to think about how it will play out for us individually. The question is: Will that increase move us into a higher tax bracket? It depends on our provisional income. That number is any income (pension, wages, dividends and more) not from Social Security, plus half the amount of Social Security. Those of us who come in under $25,000 won’t have a federal tax put on our Social Security. If that number is between $25,000 and $34,000, there will be a tax on half of our Social Security income. Over that and it goes up to a tax on 85% of our Social Security income. If your situation for 2022 is likely to put you in the category of having to pay taxes on your Social Security benefit, you can elect to have them take money out of your check each month. If you want to learn about that, call the IRS at 1-800-772-1213 and ask for IRS Form W-4V. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

STEPS INVOLVED WITH ESTATE PLANNING Medical directives. In addition to a will, estate planning includes your wishes if you become incapacitated or suffer from a serious medical condition that precludes you from making decisions about your care and finances. Spouses can be named to make important health decisions, but you may want to indicate other information, such as life support measures or organ donation, as well. If you have strong opinions on treatment, medical directives and living wills are a necessity.

Jera Lee was born to Stephen and Elsie McConnell on April 22, 1933 in Hornell, New York. She graduated from high school in 1951 from Meadville High School in Pennsylvania. Jera married John A. Biddle on October 24, 1953 and together they had three sons, Craig, Jeffery and Kip. Craig was born with a birth defect that required constant care. For 25 years she dedicated herself to his well-being and Jera met this obligation with love, honor and devotion. Also, during that time, she never neglected her other two sons and somehow found the time to work as a secretary in several Dansville area businesses such as FA Owen Publishing, Shay Trucking and attorney John Scura. An avid fan of the New York Yankees, Jera Lee is survived by her sons, Jeffery of Florida and Kip of Louisiana. She is also survived by her three grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her former husband, John and son, Craig. Also, her aforementioned parents; 2 brothers, Richard and Stephen McConnell; and sister, Betty DeMocker. At her request, there will be no services and burial will take place at Greenmount Cemetery in Dansville, NY. Kelley loved being around family, friends and helping take care of children. She was affectionately called “Mama 2!” as she loved taking care of all. Her pride and joy though was being a mom to Kourtney and making sure she was taken care of. She is survived by her daughter, Kourtney Sabins; her step-daughters, Erica, Haley and Tara Sabins; her brothers, Jesse (Rachel) Belanger of Scottsville and Corey Teed of Livonia; her grandparents, Elaine and John Scala of Springwater; and her lifelong best friend who was like a sister, Sara Coombs. Kelley’s family and friends may call Thursday, November 11, 2021 from 4-7pm at St. George-Forsythe Funeral Home, 109 West Naples St., Wayland. A trust is a relationship in which another party is given authority to handle a person’s assets for the benefit of that person’s beneficiaries. When making a trust, a person will need to designate someone as a trustee, who will be tasked with distributing assets in accordance to the terms dictated in the trust. There are many types of trusts, and working with an attorney who specializes in estate planning can help men and women determine which type of trust, if any, is best for them.
General eulogy preparation tips: * Eulogies are for the living, and for everyone at a remembrance service. * Be brief. People listen for three to five minutes. After five minutes, people stop listening. * Do a bit of research. Talk to others. What are some childhood memories? Was there a favorite lesson learned? Was there a favorite quote or an inspiring song? What was the deceased like at work? What were some favorite accomplishments? * Write out the eulogy. Even if you are an experienced speaker, during the emotional time of a rememberance service it is especially easy to wander. * Write and speak from the heart. Be yourself. * Practice the eulogy. Time it. Rehearse in front of an audience (one or two people). Listen to their feedback. Edit. Practice again. * Have a back-up plan. In case you are unable to begin or finish, have someone else prepared to deliver the eulogy for you.

HOW TO M AKE THANKSGIVING DINNER HEALTHIER Cut dow n on bread. Bread can be both delicious and filling. But bread is often full of empty calories, particularly if you’re eating refined, w hite breads. Opt for less bread in stuffing recipes and incorporate more celery, raisins, cranberries, and apples to give bulk to the stuffing. Choose w holegrain rolls and crackers to complement the main course.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * There is symbolism in Disney’s Cinderella mosaic. The company says that “guests can see that each of Cinderella’s stepsisters appears with her own special facial tint. One sister displays a red tint to show that she is ‘red with rage,’ while the other sister displays a green tint to show that she is ‘green with envy,’ as they watch Cinderella try on the glass slipper to reveal a perfect fit.” * Sorry, but that cream filling in Twinkies isn’t cream at all -- it’s vegetable shortening. * Due to heat expansion of its iron, the Eiffel Tower can “grow” by up to 6 inches in the summertime. * Only a quarter of the Sahara Desert is sandy.

S E V RA Good Samaritans I wish to give a huge thank you to two good Samaritans who helped retrieve my Golden Retriever on Friday, October 22nd, who was going back and forth in the middle of Main Street in Springwater. I am very grateful also to all of the traffic which stopped from both directions and showed such patience until my beloved pet was safe. It was just a clear reminder that there are a lot of wonderful, caring people in the world! - Truly grateful, Carol R. Rochester Philharmonic What a treat to listen to the RPO this past Saturday as they performed the score of Alfred Hitchcock's PSYCHO. And to watch the movie on the big screen as the music was played live was a great experience. The shower scene was especially hair-raising! We're so lucky to have such talent in our area!
Better spent I love football, but the owners of the Buffalo Bills are working on a plan to build a new stadium at the cost of over 1 billion dollars. To do this, they are asking taxpayers to help pay the bill. Then we have multi-millionaires paying even wealthier multi-billionaires for a 10 minute thrill ride into space. My question is this: what has happened to our humanity? What has happened to our value system? Each night on the news, we are witness to poverty and famine beyond belief in many countries - not to mention our own. Let’s re-evaluate our priorities. How many starving children could we feed and provide medical care for with the money spent on frivolity? What an idiot! Joe Manchin is holding this country hostage because of his personal interests in coal mining! The President of the United States went to Glasgow for the all-important COP26 meeting without a legislative commitment thanks to Senator Joe Manchin from West Virginia! The earth is burning up, and we all need to act fast if we want an environment that is safe to live in, especially for our children. Manchin should be the first senator impeached! Boo to you! I would like to say to the person who stole part of my trailer hitch in the [local town] area, you must have some guts. As you were stealing my trailer hitch, you must have seen my license plate that says “Disabled Veteran.” This was a very costly hitch. I hope you are proud of yourself. I use this hitch for hauling dirt and other things for our home. That is why it is a tri-ball hitch. I hope you feel good about yourself.

CONSERVE ENERGY AROUND THE OFFICE Embrace green technology. Many homeowners use programmable thermostats and other eco-friendly tech products to lower their monthly utility costs at home, and businesses can follow suit. LED lighting around the office can substantially reduce office energy consumption and costs, while business owners who own their office buildings might be able to install solar panels that will dramatically reduce energy costs and even pay for themselves over time.
DID YOU KNOW? Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.

GET ON THE FAST TRACK TO BEING ORGANIZED • Keep a cleanup bin handy. Put an empty basket in a central location, using it to gather stray items scattered around main living areas. Once everything has been collected, items can be returned to their rightful place. • Make the bed. One of the easiest ways to keep a room looking neat is to make the bed each day. Store clean linens in a pillow case so the entire set is together and ready to go. • Purge closets and cabinets. There’s no point allowing old, stained or damaged items to take up space. Set aside days to clear expired medication from the bathroom cabinet, discard ripped or ill-fitting clothing from the closet, or to dispose of broken toys in a nursery. • Write things down. Tasks seem more manageable when they are written down in black-and-white and can be crossed off as completed. Writing things down also helps make the mind feel more organized. • Exercise caution before buying. Don’t buy more than you need; otherwise, you’ll have to find space for extra items. Also, keep inventory of food and supplies in the house so you’re not unwittingly buying duplicates. • Sort mail and paperwork. Establish different categories for papers so they can be sorted and discarded as needed. These may include bills, invitations, school papers, and junk mail. Reduce paper clutter by opting for digital correspondence when possible. • Make one repair at a time. Tackle that source of stress by focusing on one repair and seeing it through to completion. • Delegate the work. If kids want to help organize, let them. It can be a fun project for an adolescent to rearrange the pantry or offer their ideas for corralling messes.
