WHY SHOP SMALL & LOCAL? The money you spend has a greater impact on your community, and ultimately you, when you spend it locally. For every $100 you spend, $68 recirculates and remains local, versus $43 when you spend online or at a national chain.* A local business is able to provide a product or service that is backed by care, concern, hard work and dedication that you just can’t always get from a corporation. House, Senate and Presidential candidate registration: An individual running for a seat in the House or Senate or for the office of U.S. President becomes a candidate when he or she raises or spends more than $5,000 in contributions or expenditures. Money raised and spent to test the waters does not count toward this dollar threshold until the individual decides to run for federal office or conducts activities that indicate he or she is actively campaigning rather than testing the waters. The $5,000 threshold is reached when: • The individual and/or persons they have authorized to conduct campaign activity receive over $5,000 in contributions or make over $5,000 in expenditures; or • The individual fails to disavow unauthorized campaign activity by writing a letter to the FEC within 30 days after being notified by the agency that another person or group has received contributions or made expenditures of more than $5,000 on the individual’s behalf. Within 15 days after an individual becomes a candidate as described, they must designate a principal campaign committee. This designation is made by filing either a Statement of Candidacy (Form 2) or a letter with the same information. A candidate required to file electronically cannot designate a principal campaign committee with a written letter but must instead file Form 2. All candidates file with the FEC, electronically or by paper. CHRISTMAS TREE VARIETIES Fraser fir trees are typically uniformly pyramid-shaped trees that have strong branches that turn slightly upward. These trees have good needle retention and a dark, blue-green hue. Many people feel these trees have a pleasant scent. Because they are such a quintessential Christmas tree, Fraser fir, as well as their close cousin, Balsam fir, tend to be more expensive than others.

The decision to become an organ donor is a selfless act that quite often saves lives. Many people sign up to be organ donors when getting or renewing their driver’s licenses. But those same people may not know that they also can sign up to be tissue donors. According to Donate Life America, one tissue donor can help more than 75 people heal. Donated tissue is often used during surgeries and can help people in life-threatening situations. People with severe burns often benefit from tissue donation, as do athletes who have suffered torn ligaments or tendons and active and veteran military members who have been injured during combat. MTF Biologics, a New Jerseybased organization that has spent more than 30 years developing tissue grafting solutions to help people heal, advises all people, regardless of their age or medical histories, to consider themselves potential tissue donors. Much like with organ donors, a person’s condition at the time of death will determine if their tissue can donated. That means prospective tissue donors have nothing to lose by signing up. People interested in becoming tissue donors can register at www.donatelife.net.

HOMETOWN TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Vitamins for Macular Degeneration Coincide With New Cramps ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been told at the age of 70 that I am in the early stages of the eye disease macular degeneration. The doctor told me to take PreserVision AREDS 2 vitamins. He said that I will be taking them for the rest of my life. I started them immediately, and a few nights later, I started having severe left leg cramps to the point where I woke out of a sound sleep to jump out of bed and shake off the cramp. Is this typical? -- C.L. ANSWER: For the dry form of age-related macular degeneration, the AREDS and AREDS2 vitamins are the usual treatment. Although they are not a cure, they do slow progression of the disease. My experience with these has been that they almost never cause side effects, and muscle cramping is not a reported side effect by the manufacturer. The timing, however, certainly is suspicious. You can try stopping them for a few days, then restarting them to see if the cramps are truly affected by the vitamins. If they are, you have two choices. The first is to deal with cramps the same way that people who get them at night for no particular reason deal with it, which is by getting regular moderate exercise and stretching the calf and hamstring muscles before bed. Having weight on the toes is a trigger for many people, so very light bed covers that aren’t tucked in can be surprisingly helpful. I’ve had a few readers come up with devices to keep all weight off of their toes in bed. Your second option is to discuss an alternative with your eye professional. The AREDS and AREDS2 formulas were shown to be helpful, but some eye professionals only choose a few components of the formula. ***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. STAY SAFE WHEN STRINGING HOLIDAY LIGHTS Lighting displays are one of the many things that help make the holiday season a special time of year. Often awe-inspiring, holiday lighting displays present a perfect opportunity for communities and individuals to showcase their festive sides. Safety should always be a priority when stringing holiday lights both inside and outside a home. The National Fire Protection Association notes that, between 2009 and 2014, fire departments in the United States responded to an average of 210 home fires that started with Christmas trees per year. Lighting displays strung on home exteriors also can pose safety risks if homeowners do not exercise caution. Following some simple safety procedures when decorating with lights can ensure everyone enjoys a safe and happy holiday season.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Magic Maze

ppy Jumping puppy sing is embarassing his owner

FOR –

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Every time someone comes to visit or says hello at the park, my puppy, Jake, jumps up and tries to lick their face. It’s embarrassing, and I don’t know how to stop it. Can you help? -- Sean in Providence, Rhode Island DEAR SEAN: Jumping up is a common problem for dog owners (for dogs, not so much; they love it). So much so that it’s one of the first things a trainer addresses with an owner. What you’ll need to do is to improve Jake’s overall response to commands as well as train him not to jump on people. Here’s how you do it, step by step: 1. Train the “sit,” “stay” and “come here” commands every day, at home and at the park. Teach him to walk on the leash calmly at your side. 2. Work with a companion who will ring the doorbell from outside, while you command Jake to sit after the bell sounds. 3. Put Jake on a leash. Answer the door to the companion; when Jake tries to jump up, tug the leash once and command him to sit. Remember to use positive reinforcement during training -- lots of praise, with a treat when he follows a command correctly. Avoid negative enforcement like scolding, yelling or hauling on the leash. Jake will not be perfectly behaved for some time; you should keep his leash attached at home when you expect visitors. If he gets overexcited when a visitor arrives and he won’t sit, take him to his crate or another room until he calms down. Even after he masters the training and is better behaved at home and on the leash, you’ll need to train him regularly so that he doesn’t slip back into his jumping-up habit.

Seasonal Tree A big thank you to the person(s) who decorate the evergreen tree at the corner of Cheese Factory and Quaker Meetinghouse Roads in Honeoye Falls. We always look forward to seeing the latest decorations as they change to celebrate the current holiday/season. You have consistently brightened this corner for years and have brought a smile to many faces. Please know your hard work is appreciated very much!

Merr Christma!

Don’t Eat Then To the person who felt the need to bash your local farmers over….. mud…. you reamed out farmers over mud. Farmers are under more than enough pressure already, with an alarming percentage of American farms going out of business year after year after year. Only a small percentage consistently make a profit. If you want them to get out and pick up dirt, expect to pay them more for it. If you still don’t get it, grow your own. Quit being entitled, eat the food they grew for you, and be grateful. More Being Added I see more junk and vehicles are being added to the Historical Area? I am not sure why this is OK. I know of many people that have contacted the village about this area. Is anything being done? As some residents are afraid to say anything because of the connections involved. When people are driving thru the area this is what they are seeing. Do we want this to be seen as a junk area? Are there any regulations regarding storing vehicles, boats, RV’s, containers? When the village board is asked, they say they will look into it, but never give a response on why this area is OK to be treated as a junkyard. Some residents take pride in their surroundings and village, while others say they do, but take advantage of their so-called liberties. Can we please clean up the historical site? Garbage is garbage no matter who or what it is!!

CHRISTMAS TREE VARIETIES Living Christmas tree, which refers to those with their roots still intact, are popular among eco-conscious holiday enthusiasts. That’s because living trees can be promptly planted after they’ve served their purpose indoors.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * In 2003, there were 86 days of below-freezing weather in Hell, Michigan.

Opt for a moderately sized tree, as root balls on larger trees can be heavy and difficult to move. Living trees can typically be kept indoors for around seven to 10 days before they will need to be returned outside. Move such trees to a sheltered outdoor area for one to two weeks so they can reacclimate to the climate. So long as the ground is not frozen, trees can then be planted when the reacclimation period ends. Better Homes and Gardens suggests selecting a mild day to plant the tree.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Doctors who perform laparoscopic surgery, which involves inserting a tiny camera into a patient’s body through a small incision, have better coordination if they play video games at least three hours per week. According to a 2003 study, gamer surgeons made 37% fewer errors and worked 27% faster than those whose only “video game” experience was the surgery itself.

Here’s a Tip On internet memes, they call them “life hacks,” simple tricks to save you perhaps time, money or simply frustration. Here’s mine: Place a bowl near your entryway. Place your keys in the bowl when you come home. They stay there until you leave. No more lost keys. Now more life hacks for your tip file. -- JoAnn Put a dryer fabric softener sheet on the back of a fan. It sticks and will distribute a fresh scent through your room. -- T.I. via email Put an apple in the potato bag to keep them from growing buds. HOW TO STAY SAFE ON DIY PROJECTS Make sure you choose the right ladder. DIYers may spend ample time shopping for drills and other electronic tools and gadgets that are fun to use. But ample time also must be afforded to the type of ladder you intend to use on a project. Estimates from the West Bend Insurance Company indicate that roughly 90,000 people visit the emergency room due to ladder accidents each year. Never use a broken ladder or an aging ladder that’s uneven. In addition, do not use a ladder that forces you to reach far away. If you’re leaning while using a ladder, the ladder is either too short for your project or positioned too far away from the wall. The National Home Security Alliance advises DIYers to place their ladder one foot from the wall for every four feet it rises above the ground. Test your ladders for their sturdiness prior to beginning work so you aren’t tempted to use a subpar ladder.

FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE CONVERTING AN ATTIC Access: Access is another aspect that must adhere to local safety guidelines. Many attics are accessible only through pulldown ladders, but that will have to change if homeowners repurpose their attic spaces. A staircase that complies with local laws will need to be installed, and contractors can work with homeowners to build that and estimate the cost. Homeowners who simply want to put desks in their attics without going with full-fledged conversions are urged to adhere to local access requirements anyway, as they’re intended to ensure residents can safely escape attics in the case of a fire or another emergency. OTHER Autumn! sad, sighing, yet most lovely Autumn, again art thou here; and again with feelings “pleasant but mournful to my soul,” do I greet thy return. And the strangest feelings of mingled pleasure and pain are awakened at thy approach, though thou excitest emotions less rapturous and fancies less playful, yet hath thy presence for me a solace and a spell unfelt amid the greener verdure, brighter sunbeams and more fragrant flowers of Summer. Dearer to me than the clustering roses of June, are they withered stalk and falling leaf.... And for the heart, the busy, changeful human heart, thou hast a thousand stirring chords, whose vibrations awaken with an electric influence its slumbering sensibilities, and whose sympathetic music responds with all the truth of an echo.

Things to think about while planning a eulogy * Some churches do not allow eulogies during a church service. Others permit a brief reflection before the service or at the end. If you want a eulogy to be part of a church service, discuss this with the minister. Ask when during the service it is preferred and if there are any guidelines or restrictions to be aware of. * Other appropriate times for a eulogy may be during an evening service, during a visitation or following the remembrance service at a luncheon or reception. * If there are to be any readings during the service, the eulogist should be informed. * If there is to be more than one eulogy given, review this with the minister and coordinate with each speaker. Each speaker should avoid similar stories and themes, and each should be brief. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Colony Lane Circle of Lights: A Tradition of Peace, Love, and Joy BY SUZIE WELLS

I

n the quiet neighborhood of Colony Lane, a festive spectacle has been lighting winter nights for nearly three decades. The Colony Lane Circle of Lights, a dazzling display of Christmas and Hanukkah decorations, has become a beloved tradition for both residents and visitors. Nancy Sullivan Flynn, a long-time resident and one of the enthusiastic participants, shares insights into the history, inspiration, and community spirit behind this radiant celebration. For about 30 years, the six homes in the Colony Lane Circle have been participating in the holiday extravaganza. What started as simple decorations evolved into a “bit of a friendly neighborly contest” and “a light circus,” as more families joined in the merriment. Nancy, having lived in the neighborhood off and on for 60 years, reminisces about the early days and the evolution of this vibrant tradition. All six homes in the circle currently participate, with each family illuminating their homes and the five tall maple trees in the center of the circle. The process begins in early December, Nancy says, with every house aglow by mid-December. Even the one home that initially hesitated eventually joined the radiant circle, contributing to the brilliance that defines Colony Lane during the holiday season. When asked about the motivation behind the elaborate displays, Nancy’s response is simple yet profound: “To bring peace, love, and joy.” The inspiration for the beautiful arrays comes from the joy of driving around and admiring Christmas lights. Last year, Nancy says a family trip to Rahway Drive left a lasting impression, inspiring her daughter to gift Nancy’s husband, Rob, Light-o-Rama gift cards so they could acquire five of the snowflakes, a new addition to their ever-growing display. The decorations may change from year to year, but some elements remain constant. Gary Smith’s carousel continues to be a fan favorite. Nancy says, “If that were not put out, I think we would have protests.” This year, Flynn Power Washing professionally wrapped the five trees within the circle, adding a touch of elegance. Technological advancements, such as a projector and a movie screen, have replaced a 20-foot-tall Santa and snowman lost to high wind rips and motor malfunctions. “There’s always something new,” Nancy says. The motivation behind this dazzling display is purely communitydriven, especially for children of all ages. Despite Nancy (aka selfproclaimed Grinch)’s suggestions to scale back, her husband, Rob (aka Mr. Christmas, obsessed with new technology and computer-driven displays) as well as the neighbors persist in making the display bigger and better each year. The joy on the faces of visitors, especially when they reminisce about visiting the Circle of Lights as children, is the greatest reward for their efforts, Nancy admits.

decided to support RHAFT each December, accepting non-perishable donations for the pantry to help channel the community’s generosity towards those facing food insecurity, embodying the true spirit of the season. The neighborhood’s goal is simple: to be a conduit for good. Whether people donate or not, the essence lies in spreading joy and goodwill. The holiday season, for Nancy and her neighbors, is about coming together as a community to make a positive impact on the lives of others. Amidst the twinkling lights and festive displays, one of Nancy’s favorite parts is the arrival of the Calogeros, friends who come each Friday and Saturday evening as Mr. and Mrs. Santa, along with an elf (neighbor Lynnie Smith), who helps park folks in the driveways when the families want to visit with Santa. This year, Buzz (Rob Flynn) and Woody (Michael Calogero), Elf (Sean McCormick) Mickey, Minnie, and Elmo are also available for pictures with visitors. Nancy explains that when these volunteers finish in the circle at 8pm, they come in and Nancy has a hot dinner ready for them. They share moments of warmth and camaraderie, “debate the best Christmas movies ever, and just spend time together because the BEST part of the holidays is spending time with family and friends.” As the Colony Lane Circle of Lights brightens the neighborhood, Nancy sends a heartfelt message to the community: “We wish you peace, love, and joy!” The tradition, fueled by the passion of neighbors such as Nancy and Rob, serves as a reminder that the true magic of the holiday season lies in coming together, spreading happiness, and creating lasting memories for generations to come.

This year, the Colony Lane Circle of Lights is not just about illuminating the night; it’s also about illuminating lives. Nancy says every year, folks would knock on their doors and offer money to help with electric bills, but the neighbors all declined. As a Girl Scout leader, Nancy says her troops annually adopt a family through RHAFT, the Rush-Henrietta Area Food Terminal, so the neighborhood has

VOCATIONAL SCHOOLING CAN PAVE THE WAY TO HIGH-PAYING JOBS Many students believe that the next natural step after graduating from high school is to go off to college. Secondary education has become such a common transition that many parents begin saving for college tuition as soon as their children are born. Although college can be the next chapter in a student’s education, many teenagers still choose to attend trade school. Television personality Mike Rowe says the country is in the midst of a skilled labor shortage because workers lack the necessary training to fill the hundreds of thousands of available jobs. Lack of information may drive the notion that trade jobs are nothing more than a backup plan if college doesn’t pan out. However, by realizing that trade jobs, along with short-term vocational training, is a smart investment - and eventually a lucrative career choice - attitudes about trade schools and laborintensive jobs may shift. A great number of college graduates enter the workforce with degrees that may not help them land jobs. And these students typically carry thousands of dollars in tuition debt. Many college grads are underemployed and working in jobs that aren’t even in their fields of study. Career and technical schools help students develop specialized skills that make graduates immediately marketable in their chosen fields, and trade salaries can be very competitive.
