CHRISTMAS COOKIES MADE SIMPLE Try a no-bake recipe. Creative culinary experts continually reveal their clever tricks, and many of these include no-bake versions of favorite desserts. No bake cookies come together in a matter of minutes, but still employ a host of delicious ingredients. Recipes frequently feature similar ingredients to traditional cookies, but rely on chocolate, honey or peanut butter as the setting agent to keep them together. Bakers may also like not having to turn on their ovens.

Holiday celebrants employ holiday lights in various ways. Certain individuals may be content to hang lights on their Christmas trees and call their decorating complete. Others may get their holiday jollies by making sure each square inch of their home is covered in twinkling lights. Still, other people prefer the more subdued effect of lights framing one picture window of the house.

HOLIDAY HOSTING IN SMALL SPACES Go small on decorations. If you know you’ll be hosting in advance of the holiday season, decorate with guests in mind. That might mean skipping a six-foot Christmas tree in favor of one that takes up less space. Avoid leaving any fragile decorations out, as adults or overexcited kids may knock them over as they try to navigate a cramped space. Page 6

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Last year, pandemic lockdowns, job losses and financial instability caused many families, along with their pets, to experience food insecurity. Because groceries are a higher priority for families than pet food, many pets got less to eat or lived off table scraps, which can be unhealthy over the long term. In 2020, local shelters, businesses and other groups came together to collect donations of food or money to purchase food and supplies for pets. These were a great help. However, we’re not out of the woods yet. Rising prices due to inflation and supply chain issues, plus continued financial instability, means that many pets will go hungry again this year. Can Paw’s Corner readers rise to the occasion again this year and help neighbors and their pets to stay fed and healthy? -- Shelter Volunteer in Wichita, Kansas

This is Penelope. She’s 4 years old, and her favorite pass times are taking naps in the sun and bird watching. She’s very spoiled and wouldn’t have it any other way.

.............................. Cristie Leone DEAR VOLUNTEER: You’ve done just that, and I thank you! This holiday season, I know my readers will make the effort to help pets through donations of food, supplies and cash. But maybe you’re a new pet owner or have never donated before. Maybe you don’t even have a pet right now, but want to help. There are so many choices out there. My advice is to pick just one way to help, because no contribution is too small. Pet food supplier Chewy has a great article on its website with ways to help: https://be.chewy.com/ pet-food-banks/ Local shelters often do community outreach to help feed pets so owners can keep their pets and not surrender them. Contact the nearest pet shelter, either by email or phone, and ask what type of donations they need. Your contribution will go directly to that shelter, so you’ll know the impact you’re making.

CHRISTMAS COOKIES MADE SIMPLE Prepare ahead. Many cookie dough recipes can be made and stored for later use. In fact, refrigerating a log of cookie dough can make it easier to cut or handle later on. Spread out the bulk of your baking over two days and you might feel less taxed.

Betty & Bob Minemier CHRISTMAS COOKIES MADE SIMPLE Use a cookie mix. Who says you have to toil and make cookies from scratch? It’s the thought that counts, and any number of creative recipes can begin by utilizing a premade baking mix. These mixes already have most of the dry cookie ingredients sifted together, including flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and sugar. All you have to do is add the wet ingredients and any extra embellishments to make the mix your own. If mixes are too much work, purchase refrigerated or frozen cookie dough. Include your own add-ins, such as nuts, white chocolate chips, bits of dried fruit, or crumbled candy canes, to give the premade dough a unique flavor.

a festive table on a dime

YOU

C AN

DO

IT!

Presentation is king when it comes to setting a memorable holiday table, and it needn’t be daunting or expensive. Here are some essential tips that will garner rave reviews at your next gathering.

Mercury Glass It’s everywhere these days. From trees, to pumpkins, to candlestick holders, it’s timeless and transitions well from season to season.

Mix and Match Don’t be afraid to mix metallics. This gold flatware, purchased second-hand, is a standout.

Add Interest with Height A mix of faux and metallic pine trees give your table the height it needs. Be sure to place them strategically so your guests can easily see one another.

Start by scouring the house to see what you can mix and match to bring your table to life. Don’t be afraid to ask parents or grandparents for family heirlooms that they may be willing to part with. One of the best investments you can make is solid white porcelain dishes. You can get them for a steal at most places and they’ll take you through every season. For a fun twist, layer them with whimsical holiday plates. Solid red napkins add a pop of color, and when placed under the plates, there’s no need for a runner or placemat.

Be Resourceful Think outside the box. These heavy metal pinecones are confiscated from an old cuckoo clock. Add some freshly clipped greens and you’re good to go.

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Wooden reindeer, real pinecones and mixed greenery take the textural feel to the next level. Snips of spruce or boxwood trees from the yard up the texture, and best of all are free. Details make all the difference. Adding personal placecards is a great touch that makes everyone feel special. How about adding a surprise lottery ticket to the bottom of a random plate? Sometimes a winner, and always a hit!

Page 12

Experiment Pinterest is a great place to get ideas. Take a stab at different napkin folding techniques and see what suits your fancy.

Where to splurge This dining room table is a restored farmhouse table. It seats 22 people when all leaves are in. If you’re going to go all out, do it here and know that it will be enjoyed for generations to come.

SAVE ENERGY AND MONEY (NAPSI)—Don’t let window replacement become a “pane” in your wallet. There’s a disconnect between saving money on energy with window replacements, according to government agencies. In fact, they found, it may take decades to recoup the cash spent on the installation of new, energy-efficient windows. The Problem The assessed value of adding 20 new energy-efficient windows in California, for example, may range from $10,220 to $18,580 based on a 2019 building assessors manual listing $511 to $929 for each window. Annual energy savings for the replacement of existing windows in a home are from $27 to $111 for dual-pane windows and $126 to $465 for single-pane windows, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. This means it may take decades to financially justify window replacements based on energy savings alone. An Answer Fortunately, there’s an alternative. Window films offer advanced energy savings and other benefits and can be quickly installed at a fraction of the cost of replacement windows, often with a return on investment in under three years. “Window films professionally installed on structurally soundsingle or double-pane windows may reduce energy consumption by as much as 30 percent, while the installation cost may be 91.5 percent less than putting in new windows,” explained Darrell Smith of the nonprofit International Window Film Association. Blood-Pressure Goal: How Low Should It Go?

Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology

Sue DeBruyne, Au.D. Doctor of Audiology

Lakeville 3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2

Henrietta 20 Finn Road, Suite C

---

DEAR DR. ROACH: My sister, 75, is taking

585.286.3664

only two drugs for the past three years, and they are both for high blood pressure. Now she finds that her blood pressure is 110/70 and wonders why she can’t take less of her medications as an experiment. For instance, if she cut her pills in half and still has her blood pressure under 120/80, would there be any problem with this? -- R.I. ANSWER: The optimum goal of blood pressure treatment is still not known; however, evidence is accumulating that it might be lower than the less than 140/less than 90 that is has typically been the target. At least in higher-risk people with high blood pressure, a large trial found that a goal blood pressure of less than 120/less than 90 had better outcomes than the traditional goal. A more recent follow-up study showed that risk of dementia was also lower in the group that had the lower blood pressure. Not everyone can tolerate a blood pressure that low: Side effects of medications can be problematic. But it’s reasonable to aim at 120/80 or less. In your sister’s case, she is a little bit below that. It wouldn’t be unreasonable if, after discussing with her doctor, she tried reducing the dose of one of the medications. If her blood pressure remains lower than 120/80, she could continue that lower dose. However, if she feels perfectly well on her current dose, there is not a reason to reduce the dose. In either case, don’t reduce the dose without a discussion, nor cut the pill in half without checking with the doctor or pharmacist. Some pills shouldn’t be cut in half.

Accepting New Patients.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF AVOCADOS Avocados can benefit vision. Avocados contain lutein and zeaxanthin, a pair phytochemicals concentrated in the tissues in the eyes. Lutein and zeaxanthin are believed to block blue light from reaching structures in the retina, thereby reducing a person’s risk of developing macular degeneration. In fact, studies published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, the American Journal of Ophthalmology and The Archives of Ophthalmology found that diets high in lutein and zeaxanthin are associated with a lower risk of macular degeneration, which the American Macular Degeneration Foundation notes is the leading cause of vision loss in the United States.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles

AARP Survey: We Want to Grow Older at Home We want to stay home as we age. That much is clear from a recent survey by AARP. The 70-question survey touched on all types of topics about home and community preferences, with responses broken down by age. Here are some of the answers from seniors age 50 and older: 77% of us want to stay in our own homes as we age. 79% of us want to stay in our communities as we age. 33% of us know we will need modifications to our homes so we can stay in them and be safe as well as independent. The number of households headed by seniors in the next 20 years is going to rise from 34 million to 48 million. We’re going to want smart home devices and bathtub grab bars (and a full bath on the ground floor), as well as voice activated gadgets, wider doorways and easy access through the front door. We’ll also want accessory dwelling units (known as ADUs), such as in-law apartments or additions, so others can be nearby but not living with us. (AARP and Lowe’s have announced a collaboration to launch Lowe’s Livable Home, which will include services and products to help us create and build what we need so we can stay in our homes. See its website at www.lowes.com.) Safety also is on our minds, and over half of us would move to another area if it’s safer. Nearly half would move if it lowered our expenses. But we want a nice community, too, with bike trails and fast internet, ideally a small town where stores and services are nearby. If you want to see the survey questions and compare your own answers, go to www.aarp.org and search for 2021 AARP Home and Community Preferences Survey. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

STEPS INVOLVED WITH ESTATE PLANNING Estate planning should begin early in a person’s life, especially for young parents. It’s easy to talk about saving for a home or retirement, but it’s not so simple to discuss who will care for your children should you die while they are still minors. Those who are not able to sort through these answers on their own should enlist the help of an attorney or a financial adviser, both of whom can take some of the emotion out of the discussion and put it in more practical terms.

Rosalee J. Miller December 18, 2021 Rosalee J. Miller died at home December 18, 2021 at the age of 72 in the care of her children. Thanks to the support of her children and CareFirst palliative and hospice care nurses, she was able to stay at home as her health declined the last few years. Rose grew up in Rochester and Conesus, and lived the last 50 years in Perkinsville, NY.

Dr. Patrick Francis Tersigni December 4, 2021

After her children were all in school, Rose returned to school herself and earned her Nurse Aide Certificate in 1980 and started her 20 year career at Noyes Memorial Hospital. Years as a Nurse’s Aide took its toll on her body, and she moved to the ER as a unit clerk and worked the switchboard until she retired in 2000.

Wayland: Dr. Patrick Francis Tersigni, 83 years of age, passed away late Saturday evening, December 4, 2021 at Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville. Patrick was a man of faith in God the Father, His Son Jesus Christ and His Holy Spirit.

Rose was at her best when she was leading and volunteering. She never played on a baseball team, but when the Little League needed coaches she moved from the bleachers to behind the St George’s team bench. When Girl Scout leaders were needed, she became a scout leader. She marched and volunteered with the Perkinsville Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and volunteered on the Rape Crisis hotline. Long after her kids were out of scouts she came back to the Little House to volunteer at the senior lunches, which she very much missed when the program was canceled.

Patrick was born October 26, 1938 in Easton, PA the son of Enrico and Dorothy (Rickets) Tersigni. He graduated from Belvedere High School in Pennsylvania. Patrick graduated from two Ivy League Colleges - Cornell University in 1961 and then earned his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Pennsylvania in 1965. Dr. Tersigni owned and operated his own practice for over 44 years, beginning in New Jersey and then when he moved to Wayland in 1977. He was a devoted and faithful veterinarian to his clients and worked on over 100,000 animals throughout his career.

After retiring she spent many years volunteering and taking on leadership roles with the American Legion Auxiliary in the local Wayland and Cohocton chapters as well as Steuben County. Her roles and activities included President, Vice President, Secretary, Chaplain, Jr Auxiliary Activity Chair, making poppies, crocheting hats and glove for veterans, sending care packages to our deployed troops, helping at VA picnics, SAL Walkathon, and participating in the annual Wreaths Across America.

His hobbies were many! He enjoyed working on his farm; doing firewood; creating “projects;” hunting, fishing and checking his deer cameras; riding 4 wheelers, and golf cart rides to visit and work with his Amish friends; riding horses; telling jokes and stories; cooking and enjoying good company and meals with family and friends; the Buffalo Bills; and especially caring for and providing for his wife of over 23 years. Dr. Tersigni was also a very proud Republican Conservative through and through.

After many years of sitting on the front porch watching the cars go by she spent her final summer enjoying the back deck, taking in the calm view over the gardens and creek, with an occasional golf cart ride on the RR tracks.

Dr. Tersigni was pre-deceased by his parents, Enrico and Dorothy Tersigni; his sister, Joan C. Frankenfield; and a grandchild, Gabriel Tersigni. He is survived by his wife, Sandra Tersigni of Wayland; his children, Billy (Lynn) Tersigni, Shawn (Mark) Claborn, Lance Tersigni, Dallas Tersigni (Laura Nightingale), and daughter, Jessica (Brian) Schaffer; his grandchildren, Jennifer Holley (Mauricio Romero), Taylor, Alex and Annabelle Tersigni, Greyson Nightingale, Lillian, Ella Mae, Pearl and Isaiah Schaffer; his great-grandchildren, Dominic and Elizabeth Larkin and Giovani Romero; his brother, Allan (Elizabeth) Schaarachmidt; along with many well-loved extended family members.

The death of her husband William in 2018 after 53 years of marriage was hard on Rose, as was the death of her beloved sister Gail in 2001. Rose was also predeceased by her parents (Aubrey and Virginia), grandparents (George and Katherine), brother (Roger), and grandson (Michael). She is survived by her four children April, Jackie(Duane), Jean (Andrew), and Andy ( Jody), recently found nieces Amanda and Kathy, eight grandchildren - Nichole, Jose, Steven, Vanessa, KatlinAnne, Samantha, Andrea, Alex, and at last count seven great-grandchildren. Donations can be mailed to the Cohocton American Legion Post 805 Auxiliary (8 Wilcox St, Cohocton, NY 14826).

Dr. Patrick F. Tersigni’s family and friends called Monday December 13, 2021 from 4-7pm at St. George-Forsythe Funeral Home, 109 West Naples St., Wayland. His funeral service was Tuesday at 11am at the funeral home. Committal prayers and interment took place immediately following at St. Peter’s Cemetery in Perkinsville. General eulogy preparation tips: * Eulogies are for the living, and for everyone at a remembrance service. * Be brief. People listen for three to five minutes. After five minutes, people stop listening. * Do a bit of research. Talk to others. What are some childhood memories? Was there a favorite lesson learned? Was there a favorite quote or an inspiring song? What was the deceased like at work? What were some favorite accomplishments? * Write out the eulogy. Even if you are an experienced speaker, during the emotional time of a rememberance service it is especially easy to wander. * Write and speak from the heart. Be yourself. * Practice the eulogy. Time it. Rehearse in front of an audience (one or two people). Listen to their feedback. Edit. Practice again. * Have a back-up plan. In case you are unable to begin or finish, have someone else prepared to deliver the eulogy for you. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus FRANCIS P. CHURCH (1839-1906)

Dear Editor: I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, “If you see it in The Sun, it’s so.” Please tell me the truth; is there a Santa Claus? – Virginia O’Hanlon

no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

V

irginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s, are little. In this great universe of ours, man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measuredby the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge. Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. No Santa Claus! Thank God, he lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood. – The New York Sun, September 21, 1897 Thanks Faith Trimble, for recommending this beautiful column.

Downtown Avon What a beautiful job the downtown Avon merchants have done decorating their storefront windows for the Christmas season! Cheers also to Assemblyman Marjory Byrnes as well. Nice job, everyone!

RPO Gala Holiday Pops So lucky are we to have the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra! The Gala Holiday Pops was sensational and such a panacea for this hectic time we’re going through. Jeff Tyzik led the ensemble through the hymns of the season, and performed some songs with his own personal arrangements that made them more memorable and fun. Another year off for the orchestral choir made up of high school students from our area, hopefully as Tyzik noted, they’ll be back next year. Jeff does such a nice job of introducing each song and many times along with a story. Such a nice addition to the wonderful music we heard! He also noted that the arts, and of course music, can lift our spirits and souls in our times of need. The Rochester Philharmonic continues to give us the gift of wonderfully performed music. Thanks RPO!

Christmas thanks Thanks so much to the Rushville Lions Club who delivered wonderful Christmas food boxes which included Ham & the trimmings for a lovely meal along with some cupboard staples and even a pretty Christmas pillow. Your generosity is greatly appreciated! Thank you and Merry Christmas!

Christmas lights Thank you to every single family throughout Livingston County and neighboring counties who adorned their homes and yards with Christmas lights and decorations. Whenever my family drives anywhere, my children enthusiastically look for these homes and enjoy them so much. You have brought so much joy to this season. Thank you!

Wanda’s is wonderful! Where can you go to eat where the owner comes around with a tray and passes out Christmas cookies and snacks to the diners? Wandas in Livonia! Many thanks to her for such a nice place to meet and eat! Thank you! To Polly Hanna who owns Rush Inter Pet, Inc. Pet Cemetery: Thank you for taking care of our animals. People should drive through it. It is open to everyone. It is better taken care of than most cemeteries. Thank you. - T.L.D. Riga Christmas Concert On Saturday, December 18th, the Riga Recreation hosted its annual Christmas Concert celebration at the Raymond C. Adams Cobblestone Hall, featuring the Churchville-Chill School District’s singing group, Varsity Vocals, lead by conductor Mr. Erik Reinhart. The Riga community was treated to outstanding vocalizations of holiday favorites. The true essence of Christmas was captured by this wonderfull group of singers and their teacher. We have here one more example of the young people and staff of CCCSD that we are very proud of. Merry Christmas! - David T.

CONSERVE ENERGY AROUND THE OFFICE Conservation methods can help save energy and preserve natural resources, but business owners may also be intrigued by the potential cost-savings of conservation. Utility costs vary depending on the size of a business, but the U.S. Small Business Administration notes that prospective business owners must estimate and include such costs when seeking loans to start their businesses. Estimated utility costs can be intimidating, especially for those owners who have never before owned their own businesses. Traditional conservation methods like recycling and reusing are great ways to conserve and save around the office, but business owners also can embrace some other ways to lower their office energy costs while benefitting the planet at the same time.
