DID YOU KNOW? According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.

WHY SHOP SMALL & LOCAL? The money you spend has a greater impact on your community, and ultimately you, when you spend it locally. For every $100 you spend, $68 recirculates and remains local, versus $43 when you spend online or at a national chain.* A local business is able to provide a product or service that is backed by care, concern, hard work and dedication that you just can’t always get from a corporation. Where we spend our time and money is where we can make a difference to our communities.

TIPS TO HELP REALIZE YOUR GOALS IN THE YEAR AHEAD Make note of potential obstacles. Recognizing potential hurdles in advance of their appearance can help you overcome these obstacles and stay the course toward achieving your goals. For example, men and women hoping to lose weight can look ahead to occasions that might compromise their efforts, such as a loved one’s wedding or backyard barbecue. Recognizing these obstacles in advance gives people a chance to develop a plan to overcome them. In the weight loss example, men and women can choose vegetarian options from reception menus or resolve to avoid alcohol, which tends to be high in calories. Spring, summer, and fall fill us with hope; winter alone reminds us of the human condition. ~ Mignon McLaughlin, The Second Neurotic’s Notebook, 1966

DIFFERENT WAYS TO HELP RESOLUTIONS STICK THIS YEAR

REAL ESTATE SECTION

Practice self-control in all aspects of life. Some researchers believe that the self-control necessary to help people maintain their resolutions is like a muscle that needs to be exercised. When selfcontrol is revved up across many different activities, it’s easy to realize one particular resolution. For example, in an experiment at the University of Albany, researchers asked 122 smokers who were trying to quit to practice extra self-control for two weeks, either by avoiding sweets or by squeezing on a grip strengthener for as long as they could twice a day. Twenty-seven percent of those who were diligent about practicing their self-control exercise successfully kicked their cigarette habit in the following month, compared with just 12 percent of volunteers who didn’t maximize self-control.

DID YOU KNOW? Without pollinators, more than 100 crops grown in the United States would not be able to thrive. Plants, including various fruits, vegetables, nuts and more, rely on pollinators to ensure to transport pollen. Though many plants are self-pollinating and others are pollinated by the wind or water, many others rely on insects and animals to become pollinated. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says birds, bees, bats, butterflies, moths, flies, beetles, and small mammals all can work as pollinators. Examples of crops pollinated by pollinators include apples, squash and almonds. Animals and insects help pollinate more than 75 percent of the world’s flowering plants, and nearly 75 percent of all crops, according to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Unfortunately, pesticide use can diminish the number of natural pollinators. Natural gardening and pest-control can help protect the habitats of pollinators.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Prepare Your Home for a New Puppy

Penny Saver

DEAR PAW'S CORNER: This Christmas, we planned to get a puppy, but it is too young to leave its mother yet. Instead of revealing the puppy on Christmas Day, we wrapped a big box that had a little note in it from Santa saying that a new puppy will arrive soon, and to write down their ideas for a name on the back of the card. Do you have any tips on how we can prepare the house for the puppy's arrival in a few weeks? -- Chet in Boise, Idaho DEAR CHET: First, kudos to you for handling the Christmas announcement so well! That's a great way to surprise the kids during the gift-opening while not having to supervise a puppy who has no idea what is going on. And keeping the puppy with its mother until it's at least 8 to 12 weeks old is so important. Involving the kids in preparation for the puppy's arrival is important. Explain to them that puppies like to explore -- often with their teeth. So they need to put away their toys, clothing and anything that they don't want to get chewed up. Puppies can also get into foods and cleaning items that can be dangerous or deadly for them, so those items need to be lifted off the floor or removed from the house's common areas entirely. Talk to them about how they can help train the new puppy. This will prepare them for how to handle, talk to and correct the puppy from the first day of its arrival. SOY FOODS PACK A POWERFUL PUNCH The Cleveland Clinic notes that soy foods provide a host of nutritional benefits. Plant protein, including soy, can provide cardiovascular benefits, including helping with people with high blood pressure lower their blood pressure to healthier levels. While many people rely on animal-based proteins to get their daily recommended intake of protein, soy foods are naturally free of cholesterol and low in saturated fats. That makes soy foods more heart-healthy sources of protein than animal products. The Cleveland Clinic says substituting soy foods for animal-based proteins a few times per week can reduce a person’s risk for cardiovascular disease. Soy foods also can be a great source of dietary fiber, though the U.S. Soybean Export Council advises consumers that not all soy products are the same. The USSEC notes that foods like soy milk and tofu contain very little fiber. People who want to utilize soy beans as a source of dietary fiber should look to foods that utilize the whole bean, such tempeh, soy flour and textured soy protein. The USSEC also notes there’s some confusion in regard to the connection between soy foods and iron, though the group admits research is ongoing. While a 1/2 cup serving of cooked soybeans contains four milligrams of iron, the phytate and soy protein present in soy foods reduce iron absorption, meaning that the body won’t really benefit from the iron. However, the USSEC recommends consumers purchase fermented soy foods, including tempeh and miso, because the body might absorb more iron from these foods than it will when consuming other types soy foods. Serving Our Community for over 20 years.

Estrace Cream Is Safe to Use in Woman Who Had Melanoma

Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology

---

Sue DeBruyne, Au.D. Doctor of Audiology

Accepting New Patients.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 70-year-old woman

Lakeville

who has been using Estrace vaginal cream weekly for several years. I am in excellent health, work out daily, run half-marathons and have my own business. I take 10 mg of atorvastatin daily. Ten years ago, I had melanoma removed from my arm. My concern is the use of Estrace. My gynecologist recommended that I use it after a Pap smear, but my primary care physician is not of the same mind. I would appreciate your opinion on this. My mother had breast cancer in her 80s, my sister had uterine cancer, and my brother passed away from bladder cancer. -- C.S. ANSWER: As far as the safety of using estradiol (Estrace), the bioidentical hormone to major natural estrogen, I am definitely of the same opinion as your gynecologist. When used topically, it works on the vulva and the lining of the vagina, keeping the tissue healthy. Without estrogen, the tissues that line the female perineum can become atrophic (thinned), predisposing a woman to discomfort, infections and incontinence. The Pap smear may have resulted in a finding that was suggestive of vaginal atrophy (increased neutrophils). Without treatment, the labia can even fuse together. With long-term use, the estrogen levels in the body are only slightly higher in women who use topical estrogen compared to those who do not, so the absorption into the body is minimal. The only case where I get concerned is with someone who has a personal history of an estrogen-sensitive tumor, such as endometrial cancer and some breast cancers. In those cases, I discuss options with both the patient and their oncologist.

2024 BOWL GAMES AND NEW YEAR’S DAY New Year’s Day is rife with tradition. Perhaps no such tradition is more exciting for fans of college football than the handful of New Year’s Day bowl games featuring some of the sport’s best teams. New Year’s Day bowl games can trace their origins back to the 19th century. According to History.com, on January 1, 1890, members of the Valley Hunt Club in Southern California paraded through the streets of Pasadena, California, engaging in various contests, including tug-of-war. While no collegians competed on the gridiron that day, the parade served as a precursor to the Tournament of Roses Parade, which immediately proceeded athletic contests that included polo matches and greasedpig catching. In 1901, the president of the parade, seeking to gain publicity for the town of Pasadena and its floral festival, sought to stage a sporting event that might attract more interest than pig-catching and polo. Festival organizers ultimately chose college football, deciding to initiate a matchup between a team representing the western United States and the eastern United States. On January 1, 1902, the football teams from the University of Michigan and Stanford University battled in the inaugural East-West football game. Michigan, which had not allowed a point all season long, steamrolled its way to a 49-0 victory. In fact, the game’s lack of competitiveness temporarily nixed plans for an annual New Year’s Day game, which was not played again until 1916, when Washington State University defeated Brown University 140. Interest in the game continued to grow from there on out, and in 1923, the game was moved to a large stadium known as the Rose Bowl. The game itself soon adopted the name of that stadium, and it retains that name today. Thanks to fan interest in the New Year’s Day game, other New Year’s bowl games soon followed, and continue to entertain college football fans every January 1. Here’s a Tip * Before you use your grater to grate cheese, give it a quick shot of nonstick spray. It will keep the cheese from gunking up in the grate. If you need softened butter for a recipe, you can grate it from frozen and it will soften up very quickly, but not melt like in a microwave. * Clean your cellphone screen often. This is especially important if you have a smartphone. We use our fingers nonstop to touch the phone, then put it directly up to our face. It’s a germ’s paradise. Just remember: A quick swipe with an alcohol cloth might save you from getting the flu this season. Stay healthy! * When heater season is in full effect -- like now -- I keep a spray bottle of water to which I add two tablespoons of liquid fabric softener. I spritz the house from time to time, and it will add humidity as well as a pleasant scent, but it also keeps my carpets from making my kids little zappers (from static buildup when dragging their feet!). -- M.A. in Ohio (c) 2023 King Features Synd., Inc.

The Power of Shopping Local: Building Stronger Communities BY SUZIE WELLS

I

n a world dominated by big-box retailers and online shopping giants, it’s easy to overlook the importance and impact of supporting local businesses. However, the benefits of shopping locally extend far beyond individual purchases, reaching into the very heart of our communities. There are so many reasons to choose local businesses to help build stronger, more resilient communities. Local businesses are the backbone of a community’s economy. When you shop locally, a more significant percentage of your money stays within the community, circulating through various local businesses and contributing to the area’s overall economic growth. Supporting local businesses helps create jobs and fosters entrepreneurship, as it provides opportunities for individuals to start and sustain their ventures.

Community Involvement Local business owners are more likely to be actively involved in community initiatives and events. They sponsor local sports teams, participate in fundraisers, and contribute to the community’s overall well-being. Resilience in Economic Downturns Communities with a strong base of local businesses tend to be more resilient during economic downturns. The interdependence of local businesses fosters a supportive network that can weather economic challenges more effectively than areas overly reliant on external corporations.

Shopping locally gives the gift that keeps giving, with: Personalized Service One of the standout features of local businesses is the personalized and attentive service they provide. Local shop owners often have a deep knowledge of their products and customers, allowing them to offer tailored recommendations and a more personalized shopping experience. Deb Paul says, “By spending your money locally, you may find yourself in a heartfelt conversation about your holiday plans and favorite seasonal recipes, as opposed to the more commercialized alternative... with incessant sales pitches and half-hearted, corporate-mandated greetings.” Fostering Social Connections

Unique and Handcrafted Products Local businesses frequently offer unique and handcrafted products not found in mainstream stores. Whether it’s handmade crafts, artisanal foods, or locally-designed clothing, these items add character and diversity to the community. Environmental Benefits Shopping locally often involves shorter transportation distances for goods, reducing the carbon footprint associated with shipping. This contributes to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly way of consuming goods.

Local businesses often serve as gathering spots where people meet, connect, and build a sense of community. Coffee shops, bookstores, and local markets become hubs for social interactions, contributing to a more connected and vibrant community. In a globalized world, the choices we make as consumers have far-reaching consequences. By choosing to shop locally, we not only stimulate economic growth but also contribute to the unique fabric of our communities. The power to build stronger, more resilient neighborhoods lies in our hands every time we make a purchase. Let’s embrace the vitality of local businesses and nurture the communities we call home.

Community Character Local businesses contribute to a community’s distinct character and charm. They often reflect the local culture and values, adding to the neighborhood’s overall identity. A thriving local business scene can attract visitors and enhance residents’ quality of life.

HOW COMMUNITIES BENEFIT WHEN CONSUMERS SHOP LOCAL Support nonprofits. Local businesses often support good work in the community, such as nonprofit groups. These can include schools and sports teams, among other groups. According to Dr. Sue Lynn Sasser, professor of economics at the University of Central Oklahoma, studies indicate nonprofits “receive 250 percent more support from small businesses than larger ones.”

Big thank you Thank you to the people who bought my dinner last Saturday night at a local restaurant. It’s a hard season for me since my husband and I were married Christmas Day. He passed from Agent Orange in 2011. It was so nice of them to treat me to dinner. I hope they have a very blessed Christmas and a prosperous New Year. Thank you again for being so thoughtful and generous to someone they didn’t know.

RANTS RANTSRANTS

RAVES RAVES RAVES

Courteous Drivers I’d like to give a shout out to the Henrietta drivers who show such courtesy and caution when cyclists are going through intersections or crossing the crosswalks. They wait until the cyclist is completely through the intersection or over the crosswalk before making their turns. Thank you for truly sharing the road.

Not Playgrounds Please let us remind you that senior apartment buildings are not playgrounds. You need to be more respectful of the elderly that live there. Take the children outside to play or to a playground where it's more suitable and safe for the tenants. Appointments I’m furious about, mostly medical offices, when they call to reschedule an appointment that you’ve been waiting months for. They want to reschedule for sometimes 2 to 3 months, if not more, out further. How about “bumping” others that haven’t been waiting so long. If it’s not your fault that the appointment is cancelled but it seems you’re the one that inconvenienced. You have no heart To all the people that dump their animals, you are the lowest. Do you even care that as you drive away, they are thinking what they did wrong? Take them to a shelter so they are warm and fed. How can you even sleep at night.

Volunteers NEEDED

Make a household favorite more healthy Many beloved dishes might be enjoyed more often if they were only a little healthier. Author and former personal chef Michelle Dudash was once asked by a client if the she could make a healthier version of chicken parmesan. The result of that request is the following recipe for “Skinny Chicken Parmesan with Spinach,” which Dudash ultimately included in her book, “Clean Eating For Busy Families” (Fair Winds). The recipe was a hit with Dudash’s client and will surely be a hit at home cooks’ dinner tables as well.

Skinny Chicken Parmesan with Spinach Makes 6 servings For the sauce: 2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil 2 cloves garlic, sliced 1 28-ounce can whole tomatoes 1/4 teaspoon dried basil 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano 2 pinches salt 2 pinches freshly ground black pepper 1/2 teaspoon honey For the chicken: 3 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese 2 tablespoons whole-wheat flour 1/2 teaspoon salt, divided 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/4 teaspoon dried basil 11/2 pounds chicken breast, cut into 6 pieces, pounded to 1/4 inch 2 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided 4 cups baby spinach 1 teaspoon lemon juice 3/4 cup fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced into 6 medallions (or shredded) 6 cups cooked whole-grain thin spaghetti tossed in 2 teaspoons olive oil Preheat oven to 375 F and coat the bottom of a 9 x 13-inch pan with olive oil spray. To make the sauce: Heat a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add oil and garlic and cook gently for 30 seconds. Do not brown. With your hand, squeeze each tomato into the pan and add basil, oregano, salt, pepper, and honey. Reduce to medium heat and simmer for 20 minutes, lowering the heat as needed. To make the chicken: Combine parmesan cheese, flour, salt, pepper, and basil in a medium dish and coach chicken with cheese mixture. Place a large skillet over medium heat and add 2 tablespoons of oil. When oil is shimmering, add chicken, rounded-side down, and cook until golden on one side, about 5 minutes. Arrange chicken in a baking pan. Pour remaining 2 teaspoons of oil into skillet and add spinach. Cook spinach for 1 to 2 minutes until wilted and swirl in lemon juice. Gently press spinach to release water and divide spinach on top of chicken. Spoon sauce around and over the chicken, place mozzarella on top, and sprinkle with 1/4 teaspoon salt. Bake for 15 minutes until chicken is cooked through. Serve over spaghetti. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

EFFICIENCY AT WORK Information is now seemingly always at our fingertips thanks to mobile devices like smartphones and tablets. While these devices may theoretically allow workers to become more productive, research suggests otherwise. Professor, researcher and author Gloria Mark with the University of California, Irvine says that activity switching and being frequently interrupted, including self-interruptions like checking social media and email, can lead people to develop short attention spans. That inability to focus for extended periods of time can adversely affect efficiency.

Position involves administering new home construction warranties which requires communication and coordination with builders, subcontractors and homeowners. Includes troubleshooting, scheduling and follow up. General residential construction knowledge is required. Experience needed in Microsoft 365. You must provide your own internet/computer setup. Up to 30 hr. per week (no weekends & major holidays). 401K and PTO offered. Email resume and qualifications to Joelle at: jmc11677@gmail.com
