THE PERFECT TREE!
Active Living 50+ ____________________23
The National Christmas Tree Association (NCTA) reports that millions of U.S. families plan to focus their holiday traditions around a real Christmas tree. That means that a lot of real trees will be sold this year starting in mid-November. NCTA also says that “about 23 percent of the consumers will purchase their trees from a ‘Christmas tree farm’ while about 62 percent will buy trees from a retail lot.” About 300,000 consumers will purchase their real tree over the Internet or by mail order. It is estimated that just as many households plan to use a new or used artificial tree this season. Real trees are in major competition with the plastic and aluminum versions.

DID YOU KNOW? Prospective real estate investors who hope to buy, hold and rent out their investment properties should first interview potential property managers before buying homes. While it’s possible to find property managers willing to manage single-family homes or duplexes, the financial resource Bankrate.com notes that many property managers prefer to manage large apartment complexes instead. Managing properties is hard work, and without skilled property managers on their side, real estate investors may become overwhelmed by the responsibilities of taking care of their real estate investments while simultaneously trying to maintain their own residences. Before buying investment properties, prospective real estate investors should interview various local property managers or property management firms, inquiring about their fees and what is included in those fees. If the cost of hiring property managers drastically cuts into the profits investors hoped to make off their investment properties, they might be better off looking to invest their money in areas other than real estate. Prospective investors can compare the potential return on investment after the cost of property managers has been factored in to the return they might get from more traditional investments to determine if investing in real estate is a sound financial decision.

Hygiene Blessings Bank of the Genesee Valley: Giving Back to the Community in a Unique Way B Y E L A H A H A S H M AT U L L A H
G
iving back to the community has long been a way of life for many. This includes helping those in need with food, clothing, housing, and even utility bills to coming up with a unique perspective on how to help families and individuals who are in need of aid. We all know that cleaning and stay hygienic is very important, but did you know that there are people in our community who cannot afford such luxury? Yes, it is a luxury that most of us take for granted. Thankfully, a local solution to this problem exists: the Hygiene Blessings Bank of the Genesee Valley. The Hygiene Blessings Bank of the Genesee Valley (HBB) is a program that helps local families in need with supplies for which they do not receive assistance from government programs such as SNAP (a federal program to help families in need with food) and HEAP (a federal program to help families in need with utility bills). These programs do not help families with paper products like paper towels and toilet paper, or other household cleaning products and personal hygiene products. That is where HBB steps in. HBB helps local families and individuals in need with household cleanliness and personal hygiene items.
program, particularly Faith Fellowship which has consistently partnered with Grace & Truth to hold these events. HBB exists to “meet a need,” said Dudek. It helps local families and individuals in need not to have to worry about how they are going to keep their house, themselves, and their children clean. This worry can affect a person’s will to move forward as well as their physical and mental health. So, the HBB is there to help.
Amanda Dudek, the founder of HBB, said she came across this program when she was on the hunt for a good article story. A hygiene bank, Community Hygiene Bank (CHB), also operates in Brockport. When Dudek wrote an article on them, she Amanda Dudek, HBB Founder realized that this program was something that was needed in her area: Livingston County. After this epiphany, Dudek visited CHB and volunteered at one of its events. She described it as a great experience, and after volunteering for the second time at one of the CHB events, she brought the idea home to the church to which she belongs.
HBB is a young program, and Dudek expressed her hope for its longevity. Two long-term goals for the program include making sure the families in the area have access to the hygiene and cleanliness products “to eliminate this need,” and providing families and individuals with connection or reconnection with faith in God. The latter goal is left to the discretion of the families and individuals who attend HBB events, and no one is at all pressured into doing so. In fact, many from the local community have expressed happiness with and gratitude for the services this program offers.
Her church, Grace & Truth Christian Fellowship, was very supportive of the idea, and shortly after, it approved starting a hygiene bank program of its own. This program is entirely staffed by volunteers and funded by donations and sponsorships by individuals and such businesses and organizations as Wegmans, the Livingston County Department of Health, and the Original Red Osier Restaurant in Stafford, NY. HBB was also awarded the Greater Rochester Health Foundation grant which helped them immensely through the pandemic.
The Hygiene Blessings Bank of the Genesee Valley celebrated its two-year anniversary in November, and it will hold its next event on January 8th, 2022. HBB strongly encourages anyone in need to attend and anyone willing to donate what they can.
The very first event of the local HBB program took place in November of 2019. According to Dudek, the core purpose of this program is “to put the love of Jesus into action; showing people that God loves them.” Another core principle of this program is that anyone in need can benefit from the services of HBB regardless of their income or the town in which they live. HBB also provides additional information about community resources and about other churches that have supported the

HBB works on a first come, first served basis, holding an event on the second Saturday of every other month (starting in January) from noon to 2 pm. The families are asked to bring a form of ID containing their address. Then, they are registered. Afterwards, they are shown around several tables of hygiene and cleanliness products by volunteers and select their own necessary items.

IMPROVE OVERALL ENDURANCE Join a marathon. The statistics reporting site StatisticsBrain.com states that only 0.5 percent of the U.S. and Canadian populations have ever run a marathon. Running on the treadmill at the gym or a couple of miles around the track is excellent exercise. Runners can take their passion a bit further by enrolling in any of the hundreds of marathons and half-marathons held annually. Crossing the finish line after running 26.2 miles is a rewarding feeling, and few activities do more to improve endurance than running a marathon.

Twisted Colon Is a Surgical Emergency ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: This past weekend, during my son’s wedding festivities, I experienced a sigmoid volvulus. Doctors recommended surgery, but I opted for a colonoscopy, which was performed successfully. Thank goodness. I was immediately a new woman, and no one would have dreamed I went through this emergency. The surgeons recommended I have my sigmoid colon removed in order to decrease the risk of recurrence. Ideally, this would happen as soon as possible. What could have prompted the sigmoid volvulus? Is it an absolute that I must have my sigmoid colon removed? What are the odds of it recurring? If I do need the surgery, how can I best prepare for it, and what are the side effects? -- M.B. ANSWER: A volvulus is the twisting of a hollow structure in the body around its long axis (imagine holding one end of a sock in each hand and flipping the middle so it twists on itself). The sigmoid colon is the most common location. It is a surgical emergency, as tissue death and gangrene may follow. The biggest risk factor for volvulus is chronic constipation, but some people just have anatomy that predisposes them to get a volvulus. Surgery is the definitive treatment, but colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy may be used to untwist the colon; medical professionals use the term “reduce.” However, your surgeon was right that you are at risk for this happening again. In those people with a history of volvulus, 50% to 60% will get another, and if you have two, the recurrence rate is even higher. For a person in generally good health, I would recommend definitive surgery to prevent recurrence of volvulus. There are no specific instructions to prepare for surgery, beyond taking good care of yourself and following your surgeon’s instructions about your medications (if any). Any abdominal surgery has the risk of bleeding, infection and adhesions (connections between loops of bowel that can lead to painful obstruction later); however, these risks are quite small. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2021 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE AND CONNECTED DURING A MOVE (NAPSI) — Planning a move can be stressful, but planning a move in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic brings a new set of challenges. Stay safe and connected with some smart pre-move planning; here are some tips: Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches. Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home. Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain your exercise program or explore online courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Don’t forget to connect with friends through group video chats or viewing parties—you can even take your friends and family on a virtual tour of your new place!
BEAUTIFUL DESIGNS For Your
Wedding ORDER ONLINE AT WWW.PRINTINGBYPENNYLANE.COM
DEAR SARA: I’m a fan of harnesses, especially for dogs that like to pull at the leash. A harness fits around a dog’s front legs and torso, and has a top strap with a clip ring for the leash located between the dog’s shoulders. It’s secure and sturdy, it stays on your dog, and he won’t injure himself trying to pull away from you. (You can also keep his collar on, mainly so his license tag is always visible.) Some dog harnesses come with a sturdy handle sewn onto the top strap. It’s not so much for picking up the dog but is an additional point of control if you’re worried about your dog bolting or jumping up on other people. For the long term, of course, your Lab needs to improve his basic obedience skills. He should never tug at his leash, but should walk next to you. Putting him into a harness will give you more control. Dogs tend to respond more often to a tug on the harness, which applies pressure at several points rather than just around the neck. Those multiple contact points disperse pressure around the dog’s torso so that he remains comfortable and uninjured, reducing anxiety and hopefully making him more receptive to training commands. Harnesses are not as cheap as collars, but they’re well worth the investment, especially when dealing with a strong, independent thinker like your Lab. Send your questions, tips or comments to ask@pawscorner.com.

SIMPLIFY COOKING FOR A CROWD THIS HOLIDAY SEASON Prepare a familiar dish. Hosts may agonize over their holiday menus, and some may feel compelled to prepare a family specialty or the same dishes their parents or grandparents prepared for holiday dinners when they were children. But holiday hosts can make things easy on themselves by choosing dishes they’ve made in the past, regardless of their place in family history. Chances are the ingredients for hosts’ own specialties are already in the pantry, saving a potentially time-consuming trip to the grocery store. And thanks to the familiarity factor, hosts’ own specialties likely won’t require as much time to prepare.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Got plastic packaging that’s a pain to get open? Use your can opener. Run it around the sides to break into your packages. It works! * For every side dish that requires extra preparation time, plan for one or two that don’t. For instance, if you are preparing a casserole with many ingredients and complicated instructions, serve a package of vegetables that require nothing more than steaming. * Wine buyers tip: Experts say to multiply the number of adult guests by a half bottle to determine how many bottles of wine to buy for your holiday gathering. Add an additional glass of wine per guest for every hour after dinner you expect guests to linger. * How to peel potatoes: Boil whole potatoes with skin on for 20-30 minutes (depending on the size of your potatoes). You should be able to stick a knife all the way through without resistance. Then remove them to an ice bath for 10 seconds each. The skin will slip right off. * “Have kids make their own whipped cream with a jam jar! Fill a screw-top jar (glass, chilled, works really well) halfway with heavy cream, a little sugar and any flavoring extracts you like, then seal and shake. Kids also can make butter with cream in a jar. You may add a pinch of salt instead of sugar, and shake longer.” -- A.A. in Florida * Researchers tell us that the best time to interview is late morning on a Tuesday. You will avoid the interviewer’s likely Monday/Friday crunch, and have his or her full attention. Do your homework on the company, and get ready to shine! GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Christmas Dinner Moves Indoors Those in power at the senior center have now decreed that we will have the annual Christmas dinner indoors instead of out in the parking lot. This flash of brilliance came after they received a number of responses that were more along the lines of “Are you crazy?” rather than the expected RSVPs. The original plan was to spread tables across the asphalt outside, with culinary arts students bringing food and drink out from the kitchen in the center, and to park a bunch of senior citizens outside in the cold in the middle of December in New England to eat that dinner. Saner heads prevailed, I hear, when a retired nurse posed the question: “And just how many of our members do you suppose are going to end up in the hospital after two hours of exposure to outdoor December temperatures?” The student chef, I also hear, claimed that he’d been asked to provide a “hot dinner” and wasn’t thrilled about having to work for hours over hot stoves only to have his creations subjected to icy temperatures. As of now, the dinner will be indoors with fewer tables. Santa will still arrive via limo, and the high-school chorus will still sing (although they’ll be out in the hall as there is no place for all of them in the actual room). Watch this space, however, because I hear there is a movement afoot (as well as a petition from members) to ditch the sit-down dinner completely and instead have a standup event with finger foods arrayed on tables and a cash bar over in the corner. “We want to see our friends and mingle” has been the cry (as well as what is written on the petition). “We want some good dance music” penciled in one signer. In a perfect world, the powers-that-be would have asked the members first. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

TECH TO TAKE ALONG ON YOUR NEXT ROAD TRIP Chargers: Many people feel their devices are extensions of themselves, but such devices won’t be of much help if they are routinely running out of power. Bring along several chargers that can be plugged into your car so you and your passengers can keep your smartphones and other devices running throughout the trip. Though the idea of going off the grid might seem enticing, leaving the world behind is less romantic when you need roadside assistance or are in search of a restroom or a place to pull over and grab a meal. SPIRITUAL CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS Attend Mass Churches traditionally hold religious services on Christmas Eve and Christmas. These services are joyful expressions of faith, music and community spirit. But Christmas mass is not the only time to head to church. During Advent, the four-week period preceding Christmas, Catholics prepare and repent. Advent calendars help count down the days until Christmas.
Town of West Sparta Garbage/Recycling for 2022 The town board passed a resolution at the regular monthly board meeting on Nov. 11, 2021 to continue the Town’s Garbage/Recycling program through 2022. The resolution increases the annual fee from the historically low $25.00 per year to $120.00 per year effective January 1, 2022. This increase is necessary to keep the program from losing money and having a negative effect on the Town budget. The resolution keeps the waste garbage cost at $3.50 for each Town Bag and at $1.00 for each Sticker to be applied to a kitchen waste bag (typically white) up to a 13 gallon size.
In order for the Town to continue to offer this service in coming years we ask our residents to do the following: Please crush all cans and boxes – this keeps the recycling bins from filling up as often. The Town is charged for every time the bins need to be emptied. Please pay your fair share – don’t over stuff your bags.
The resolution also provides patrons the option of participating in the program for two six-month periods (January 1 through June 30 and July 1 through Dec. 31) in lieu of $120.00 for the full year (Jan. 1 through Dec. 31). The process of implementing this option is still being developed. AUTOMOTIVE

Buy a freshly cut tree. Whenever possible, celebrants should cut their own trees. This ensures that the tree they bring home is fresh, increasing the chances it will remain so throughout the season. If it’s not possible to cut your own tree, the National Fire Protection Association notes that fresh trees should have green needles that do not come off when touched. Trees that appear to be dried out or those that shed needles when touched should be avoided.

By Lucie Winborne * In March 1980, multiple female students at Southern California universities complained that someone had surreptitiously painted their toenails while they studied in the library. The perp, dubbed “Leonardo da Toenail,” was caught but released, since police hadn’t discovered him in the act. Apprehended again a year later, he was ordered to a hearing at the city attorney’s office but didn’t show up and was never seen again.

* Academically gifted actress Sharon Stone skipped both kindergarten and first grade, entering second grade at age 5. * At least six ravens are kept at the Tower of London at all times, due to an old superstition that says: “If the ravens leave the Tower, the Kingdom will fall.” The birds even have part of a wing clipped so if they do decide to fly around, they won’t get very far.

S E V RA Pavilion girls volleyball A great Pavilion Central School community and alumni has supported and contributed to our Pavilion Girls Volleyball Team! A big thank you to the Pavilion Central School administration, teachers, staff, and students that came and cheered us on. While winning the Class D Sectional Title and the Far West Regional, we had the largest crowd, always giving the team a standing ovation at match point. They also followed the team to Glens Falls for the State Tournament. Even though we had to travel the furthest of the Class D teams, we had the largest crowd with the loudest and proudest fans. Everyone in the Pavilion Central Community made an amazing experience even better. Thank you!
Wallet return On November 9th, my wallet dropped out of my car when I went to go into Target in Batavia. I didn't realize I had dropped it. A man saw it had been dropped and brought it to the desk intact. A relative working at the desk knew me and brought it to me. I appreciate your integrity more than you know, and I am very grateful! - A very thankful neighbor
School violence I have been hearing rumors of [local] school district having a bullying problem again. My two great grand children, plus other kids are being bullied, as well. My one great grandson was pushed into a "pond." Why are these bullies being tolerated again? My granddaughter went through this school district in the 1980s, and she was beaten on her head. Why? If you have surveillance cameras, please review them. Stop the violence. This behavior is not acceptable! Manchin makes sense Joe Manchin stood up against his own Democratic party. This new bill will cost a lot, although [some] say it costs nothing. The biggest polluters in the world did not attend the Climate Summit, and Sleepy Joe lived up to his name. Shutting down America's coal, natural gas and oil industries kills our jobs and our independence from other countries. If we don't produce it for ourselves, other countries will produce it for us. This does not help America or the climate. Hope you enjoy the price of gas and your upcoming heating bills. Pull together If there were ever a time in the history of our world that everyone needs to be pulling together, it is now. But it seems that instead of pulling together, we in the United States seem to be finding more reasons to find fault with one another. Neither the far right nor the far left are where we should be. With all the problems Covid has caused because of businesses having to temporarily close down all over the world, we are experiencing major supply shortages. Many companies find themselves forced to raise their prices to stay in business. Things will eventually get better, and if we all work together, it will happen sooner rather than later.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OFFICE MORE ECO-FRIENDLY Develop telecommuting policies. In analyzing data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2005-2014 American Community Survey, GlobalWorkplaceAnalytics.com found the population of regular work-at-home non-self-employed persons grew by 103 percent between 2005 and 2014. Working from home is often seen as employee-friendly, but it also can benefit employers and the environment. When employees work from home, their employers need not purchase or lease as much office space, saving them substantial amounts of money. In addition, working from home cuts down on the number of commuters driving to work, decreasing fuel consumption and vehicle emissions. Employers who cannot allow employees to work from home full-time can still help the environment and their employees by allowing workers to work from home one or two days a week.
CONSERVE ENERGY AROUND THE OFFICE Conservation methods can help save energy and preserve natural resources, but business owners may also be intrigued by the potential cost-savings of conservation. Utility costs vary depending on the size of a business, but the U.S. Small Business Administration notes that prospective business owners must estimate and include such costs when seeking loans to start their businesses. Estimated utility costs can be intimidating, especially for those owners who have never before owned their own businesses. Traditional conservation methods like recycling and reusing are great ways to conserve and save around the office, but business owners also can embrace some other ways to lower their office energy costs while benefitting the planet at the same time.

DID YOU KNOW? How households earn their income has changed dramatically over the last several decades. According to a Pew Research Centeral analysis of the Decennial Census and American Community Surveys integrated Public Use Microdata Sample files, in 1960 only fathers worked in 70 percent of American households. That figure has dropped in each ensuing decade and by 2012 fathers were the sole earners in just 31 percent of American households. While one in four households in American were dual income households in 1960, by 2012 that figure had risen to 60 percent. While those figures represent dramatic changes, the number of households in which mothers are the sole earners has not changed all that much since 1960. In 1960, mothers were the sole earners in just 2 percent of American households. Fifty-two years later 6 percent of American households featured mothers as the sole earners. EMPLOYMENT

Research the job market. Look into the industries for the field you are considering. Is it the right time for success in this field? Industries tend to ebb and flow. Do not leave a job only to find the next career has few, if any, openings. Job growth projections are available through resources like the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
WAYS TO INCREASE PRODUCTIVITY AT WORK Write things down. A to-do list floating around in your head can become overwhelming. The physical task of writing things down and crossing items off the list one-by-one can help you sail through tasks effectively. If you’re a mobile person, jot the list down on the notes function of a smartphone or use a task app that syncs with calendar functions.

GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS Work-related stress is an all too common problem in workplaces across the globe. According to the American Institute of Stress, 80 percent of workers report feeling stress on the job. Perhaps most troubling, nearly half of those people admit they need help in learning how to manage their stress. The American Psychological Association notes that stressful work environments can contribute to a host of physical problems, including headache, sleep disturbances and short temper. Chronic stress can produce more serious consequences such as high blood pressure while also weakening sufferers’ immune systems. Stress at the workplace also can make it difficult to concentrate, which in turn can compromise workers’ abilities to perform at the peak of their abilities. That supports the notion that stress is a problem for both employees and employers. As a result, finding ways to reduce that stress should be a team effort. Getting a handle on stress can be difficult. Since so many people trace their stress to the jobs they need to get by, they might think it’s impossible to address that stress without derailing their careers. But there are a handful of ways for professionals to get a handle on their stress without negatively affecting their careers. EMPLOYMENT

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OFFICE MORE ECO-FRIENDLY Recycle old equipment. Advancements in technology now occur at a breakneck pace, so the equipment businesses use today may very well be obsolete tomorrow. Businesses that want to be more eco-friendly should recycle rather than discard old equipment. Simply throwing equipment away might even be illegal depending on where an office is located. Some electronics contain mercury, lead or arsenic, hazardous materials that can do significant damage to the environment when not properly disposed of. Some retailers, including the office supply chain Staples, accept old equipment for recycling at their stores at no charge to business owners. If equipment is still functional but somewhat outdated, look into donating it to local organizations in need.

DID YOU KNOW?
Leisure activities may be widely viewed as fun ways to fill up free time, but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. A 2011 analysis published in the journal BBA Molecular Basis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on cognitive function and dementia. The analysis, conducted by researchers with the Aging Research Center in Stockholm who examined various studies regarding the relationship between certain activities and cognitive function, defined leisure activity as the voluntary use of free time for activities outside the home. After retirement, leisure time constitutes a large part of many retirees’ lives, and finding ways to fill that time is more beneficial than merely avoiding boredom. The researchers behind the study concluded that the existing research is insufficient to draw any firm conclusions regarding the effects of certain types of leisure activities on the risk for dementia and cognitive decline, though they did note that multi-domain cognitive training has the potential to improve cognitive function in healthy older adults and slow decline in affected individuals. A multi-domain approach to cognitive training involves memory, reasoning, problem-solving, and map reading, among other activities. Aging adults who embrace activities that require the use of such skills may find that they’re not only finding stimulating ways to fill their free time, but increasing their chances of long-term cognitive health as well.
