Sweethearts who want to keep their relationships running strong know that Valentine’s Day is celebrated each year on February 14. But even the most ardent Valentine’s Day enthusiast might not know just why this day designed for lovers to express their affections for one another is celebrated in mid-February. According to the Library of Congress, it’s hard to pinpoint exactly why Valentine’s Day is celebrated on February 14, though the date might have ties to the ancient Roman celebration of Lupercalia. Lupercalia was a spring festival celebrated each year on February 15. The holiday was moved to February 14 after the spread of Christianity. The Christian faith had several early martyrs named Valentine, and each of them were celebrated with a saint day on February 14. But the unique history of Valentine’s Day and its association with February 14 as well as its romantic sentiments does not end there. The Library of Congress also notes that, in the Middle Ages, people believed birds selected their mates on February 14. As a result, it was not uncommon for lovers to recite prose to one another on this date.

I
t was the summer of 2018, more than an entire year before the word “pandemic,” became a part of our daily vocabulary. One woman, yours truly, was about to embark on the adventure of a lifetime, changing careers to pursue the dream of writing full-time. I expected it to be exciting. I expected it to be challenging, full of new experiences and opportunities. It has been all that and more. What I never expected, however, is how much writing the Genesee Valley Penny Saver’s weekly Hometown Stories would teach me about love. • Take Helen Serafi ne, for example. Helen is the owner of the Angry Rooster Café in Caledonia, a business from which she continuously serves the community around her. Last year alone, she hosted a Thanksgiving dinner for area friends in need. She also created the Little Food Pantry in the alley next to her café where people can come at any time to select or drop off food items. Still, Helen saw more needs to meet.
• In Brockport, the Community Hygiene Bank (CHB), which has served the area since March 2017, became even more essential with the advent of Covid-19. The CHB provides personal hygiene and household cleanliness items to struggling families and individuals while offering prayer for all those who ask. Even when cleaning items became scarce, CHB continued to offer them at their events. In its new home at Jubilee Christian Church in Brockport, CHB has grown from serving 11 families to now serving approximately 150 families. Providing for one’s neighbors: that is love. • Further south, Tina Markle, founder of Your Centers Dansville, goes above and beyond for those around her. Your Centers Day Respite Program specializes in helping individuals requiring managed long-term care. However, the doors are open to everyone and serve breakfast, lunch, and snacks. Tina is a support for local elderly, disabled, and shut-in individuals, particularly during Covid-19. She personally delivered groceries to many people who could not come out and shop for themselves, often responding to calls from morning until evening. Recently, Tina opened a clothing “store” to help struggling families. She also organized a collection of goods for flooded communities last fall. Giving freely of yourself to those around you: that is love.
A gift tree, offered by Helen during the holidays, presented neighbors with the opportunity to play Santa Claus to others during the recent holiday season. Helen has also established (and continues to support) a “coat tree” as well as a container of winter wear such as hats, scarves, and gloves in front of her restaurant. As her sister, Mary Serafi ne put it, “If someone needs something, she is there. They don’t have to ask; she just does it.” Serving those in need: that is love. • Further west in Batavia, meet Senior Wishes. Th is organization serves a vulnerable and too often forgotten segment of our population: our elderly friends, family, and neighbors. According to Wendy Miller Backman, Senior Wishes Executive Director, “Senior Wishes was created to recognize that our aging seniors still have things they want to do, places they want to go, or people they want to see. We transform those dreams into a reality.” Senior Wishes has granted many hundreds of requests. For Leonard, an 81-year old Army Veteran who hasn’t been on a boat in 20 years, a Senior Wish meant one more time holding a fishing pole in his hand and feeling the lake breezes on his face. For Charles, a WWII Army Veteran who had wanted to see his cousin in Oakland, CA for some time, a Senior Wish meant a very special reunion after 10 years apart. Finally, for 89-year-old WWII Veteran Marco, who has been a fan of the L.A. Dodgers for as long as he can remember, a Senior Wish meant a trip to Cleveland to watch his beloved Dodgers play the Indians. Caring for our elderly: that is love.

• Sometimes, love is so powerful, it creates a miracle. The shutdown across all New York schools due to the Covid-19 pandemic had prevented St. Agnes School of Avon from holding three of its major fundraisers as the 2019-2020 school year was coming to a close. On April 27th in the face of a budget deficit, it seemed likely the recommendation going forward on May 8th would be for the school’s closure. “The next day, we formed a task force, and on April 29th, we put up a GoFundMe,” Principal Jensen explained. “Within three days, we had raised $100,000 thanks to community members, alumni, current and former parents of students, teachers, and even students, which was so sweet.” On May 6th, just ten short days after the St. Agnes School stood on the brink of closure, Father Michael presented the Bishop with a letter recommending that Avon’s St. Agnes School remain open. “The community rallied around our school,” Jensen said. “Our drive encouraged others to be ‘a light in the darkness…’ they lit up our sky!” Preserving local treasures like St. Agnes School: that is love. These represent only a handful of the stories that have poured out from across our region and into our pages over the past three years. Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to recognize that our communities are fi lled to overflowing with generous people and organizations. Love may not always make the news, but it makes our towns incredible places to be.

Serving for a Centennial Series Rotary defines itself as a service organization encompassed of business and professional leaders who conduct humanitarian projects, encourage high ethical standards and work towards world understanding and peace. It all started with one man, Paul Harris, a Chicago attorney. He formed the first Club in 1905 with the idea of professionals with diverse backgrounds who could exchange ideas and form friendships, and address the challenges in their own communities and around the world.
PAST
In 1922, Dansville Rotary Club became one of 51 organized clubs and was Chartered by the Elmira Rotary Club in what was called “The Merry Month of May.” The first meeting was held at the Foster Hotel in Dansville. The first community project the club undertook was sponsoring a playground and swimming pool in the amount of $4,500, which was the birth of the Rotary Field, now known as Babcock Park. The park was fully deeded to the Village in May of 1925. Dansville Rotary Club has also sponsored three clubs: Perry in 1924, Geneseo in 1925 and Nunda in 1928.

The Dansville Club currently has 39 members. We are always open to welcome new members. If you are interested, contact one of the members to get some information. The club just finished their “Stove Project,” which is an international project to help the many people who still cook over an open flame in their homes. We purchased 100 of these special stoves to transform their one room huts into an efficient, safe place with less pollution and smoke in the home, along with using 50% less wood. The club also made its second of five installments for the committed $25,000 for the 3rd floor renovation of the UR/Noyes Hospital in memory of our fellow Rotarian, Jon Shay. The Annual Trivia Night will be held February 19th at the Dansville Community Center. We are ready for laughs and fun with friends! If you couldn’t join us this year, mark your calendar for 2023! We are proud to announce the February Rotary Business of the Month - Empire Realty. We appreciate the support Empire Realty gives us throughout the year. Currently, the club is working on a project with the Dansville Lions Club for the gym and daycare expansion at the Four Square Church. Also in the process of purchasing exercise equipment for Babcock Park. DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 35-year-old white male who was a drug addict from the age of 14 until 32. You name it, I took it. About three years ago, I quit drugs and have lived a healthy lifestyle since. I do not drink alcohol, and I smoke one or two cigarettes a day. Three years ago, I was tested for hepatitis and was told the results were negative. About two weeks ago, I was tested and found to have hepatitis C. The results were “HCV RNA Quantitative real time PCR 8010 (high) and log 3.90 (high).” These results were given to me by a nurse without explanation other than to see a specialist. Further physician visits were denied by my insurance. I have no idea what this means, or what I need to do. I have no symptoms or discomfort at this time. What happens if this condition goes untreated? -- Anon. ANSWER: First of all, congratulations on quitting almost everything. That was the best thing you could have done for your health. Now you have to deal with a complication of drug use, particularly injection drug use: hepatitis C. Hepatitis C is a slow-acting virus that affects the liver. The course of hepatitis C is variable. Some people have a very aggressive virus, which without treatment can cause permanent liver damage, ultimately leading to cirrhosis and sometimes cancer of the liver. Others have a much more benign course with no evidence of liver damage, even after many years with the virus. Your viral load, a measure of how much virus is in the blood, is fairly low. However, you absolutely should still go see a specialist. This is usually a hepatologist or infectious disease doctor, who has special expertise in treating hepatitis C. They will do additional blood testing, and probably a noninvasive scan of the liver to look for fibrosis, to determine whether there has been damage and the urgency of treatment. Treatment for hepatitis C is so good now (97% or more effective) and the side effects of the new drugs are so mild that most experts treat someone with even very benign disease. Treatment courses are sometimes shorter for people with mild disease and without scarring of the liver. Your insurance company is absolutely in the wrong to deny a visit with the specialist, and that decision needs to be appealed, preferably by your primary care doctor. In the meantime, continue to avoid alcohol, and do not take more than six regular strength (or four extra strength) Tylenol a day. You also should be sure to have immunizations to hepatitis A and B, if you are not already immune.

I worry that he will get run over by a car or attacked by a coyote. He will look at me when I call, but that is it. -- Kelly in Fort Myers, Florida
Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.
DEAR KELLY: You can teach cats to respond to certain commands, and calling them is one of those commands. I know that Billy can learn to do it, because he clearly recognizes your voice. He just doesn’t see the value in returning to you right away. So it’s important to help Billy “see” the value in returning when you call! You do this through training that uses positive reinforcement -- a favorite treat or food. Here’s how: * Come up with a noise that you can make just before Billy gets a treat or dinner. A whistle, a clucking noise, even a little song. * Just before you open his can of food or treat bag, make that noise. Do it at every feeding and treat time. * Set aside five minutes, twice a day, for reinforcement training. * During training, make the noise, wait for Billy to respond, then give him a treat. Back up a couple of feet and repeat. * Gradually increase the distance during each session until Billy comes running when you call. Once Billy associates that specific noise with a reward, he’ll come back every time you call. Make sure to always reward him when he comes, even if it’s just lots of praise. Is a Part B Premium Cutback Coming? By now we know just how much our Social Security checks are going to be for this year, after the deductions for Part B. The average dollar increase is $92 per month for singles. The Part B deduction has gone up $21.60, mostly due to the price of the new Alzheimer’s drug, Aduhelm, for a total of $170 per month. The drug costs $56,000 per patient per year. And we’re all going to pay for it, whether we need it or not. The news now is that the price of that drug has been cut in half, to $28,200 per year, after pressure was brought to bear on the manufacturer when it was revealed that Medicare might not pay for it at all. Additional pressure came from doctors who were suspicious the drug didn’t actually work and who wanted their own tests run on it. Since it must be given via IV in the hospital or doctor’s office, it falls under Part B instead of the Part D drug plan. Hot off the press is a proposal that Medicare will cover the drug -but only for those in randomized controlled clinical trials that will settle once and for all the question about whether the drug actually works. They’ll likely have a decision on that proposal in April. And what of our Part B costs, given the lowered cost of Aduhelm? Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra ordered Medicare to look again at the premium we’re being charged for 2022. There is the smallest chance it might be lowered, which has never been done before. Last year it was estimated that our Part B premium would be $158.50 this year. If that $170 is cut back to that amount, it would net us an extra $11.50 per month. What shall we spend it on? (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

Little-known Facts About Abraham Lincoln In honor of Lincoln’s birthday, here are 13 facts about the man. 1. Towering over others at a height of 6 feet 4 inches tall, Lincoln remains the tallest president to hold office. It is likely his stature helped to present an air of authority during his presidency. 2. Lincoln had two romantic interests before he married Mary Todd in 1842. Livonia: At age 81, Nancy passed on February 1, 2022 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY. She was born on March 29, 1940 in Warsaw, NY to the late Raymond and Katharyn (Walker) Briggs. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her first husband, Douglas Welch and her brother, John Briggs. Survived by her husband, Christopher Rider; her daughter, Sarah (Thomas) Lauder of Plantation, FL; and granddaughters, Katharyn and Madilene Lauder. Nancy is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and many friends. Having earned an undergraduate degree at Wilson College and her master’s degree from Alfred University, Nancy’s career spanned 35 years teaching math at Honeoye Central School. Nancy was quick to volunteer her time and resources to those in need, whether giving her time to hospice patients at Teresa House, serving in various capacities at St. Michael’s Church in Geneseo or coming to the aid of family, friends or critters. Wherever she saw the need, she gave generously. Throughout her life, she was an enthusiastic lover of the outdoors and of all of its plants and creatures. Her devotion to animals was well recognized from nurturing ill or orphaned wildlife as a rehabilitator or simply taking in another stray cat. Nancy will be remembered for her quick witted, often whimsical sense of humor, brilliant smile and “gift of gab.” Her zeal for life was infectious and she lived her life in her “uniquely Nancy” way. We are grateful for the many unforgettable ways that her life touched and joined ours. A private graveside service will be held in the future at Temple Hill Cemetery, Geneseo, NY. He was born in Rochester NY on May 17, 1978 to parents, Paul and Patricia (Halpin) Klemmer. He was predeceased by his mother, Patricia Ann “Patty” Klemmer in 2017 and grandparents, Theodore and Marie Halpin & Allan and Vera Klemmer, and his cousin, Matt Halpin. Survived by his beloved son, Liam Klemmer; father, Paul Klemmer; and sister, Erika Edwards (Kyle); nephews, Cole and Grayson Towery and Henry Edwards. Jason also had a second business, LivCo Tree company, that he operated with his close friend Matt Sattora. Jason built a brotherhood out of cousins and friends who adored him. His cousins Josh, Andy, Lizzy, Lauren, and Teddy had an inseparable bond that all are grateful for. Jason’s ability to bring people together and celebrate the success of his friends and family brought great joy to all. Jason had a gift in generating great political and though- invoking conversation that left all in admiration of his wit and charm. Jason was passionate about the outdoors, to include family trips to Canada, hunting, fishing, and priceless time with his family at their cabin on the family farm and cottage on Conesus Lake. By far Jason’s greatest joy was spending time with his son, Liam.

S E V RA Hope for Humanity I want to give a shout out to a very special citizen that helped me in a dire time of need! This Friday morning after the dump of good ol’ Rochester snow, my car got stuck at the end of my drive way! I panicked because I had to get my prescription at Wegmans. While I was rocking my car back and forth, a friendly knock was heard on my window! There was a young man dressed in what appeared to be orange fur, cat like ears, and a beard. He jokingly said "Never fear! Snarf Maxx is here!" and he held up a shovel! As I sat in my warm car, he began shoveling the snow beneath my tires! And he wasn't bothered or distressed! He just began singing, "I'm the best!" and kept at it! He looked weird with his fur clothes, but good people are good people! No matter what they look like! Then he walked to the front of my car and told me to go in reverse and I was out! He waved goodbye and said "Enjoy the Wonderland!" This is a lesson to us all! Bless you Snarf Maxx! You are the best! Auto Help This past Saturday (2/5) driving was already an adventure given the recent big snowstorm and temperatures in the teens. Then, after shopping, our adventure factor really increased when we discovered that our car battery had died. Luckily, we were able to purchase a new one just a few doors down in the same Geneseo plaza at an Auto Plus Auto Parts Store. Common Concerns A couple of weeks ago a reader wrote about their frustration that 42% of survey respondents were unconcerned about climate change. Most of us want our lives back and are more concerned with getting Covid behind us. The volcanic eruption in Tonga will effect the climate in one day. Earth's climate has continually changed through the millennia. There is historical evidence of this. Most us are for innovations that will improve everyone's lives. The climate change New Green Deal makes the rich richer. I will believe these politicians are serious when I see wind and solar farms in view of the playgrounds of the wealthy. Currently, only the rural areas they don't see are marred by these eyesores. I love the planet. Let's get some real innovations all engineered in the USA.

Using more renewable resources than natural, and allowing our wonderful environment to do its natural thing instead of forcing accelerated climate change. Hey look: control! DEPUTY DIRECTOR OF LONG TERM CARE This is an important administrative position involving fulfilling the duties of the Director of Long Term Care in his/her absence and performing other essential support functions to the Director at other times. The work involves handling assigned operational requirements of the Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation and managing and carrying out special projects. Supervision is exercised over subordinate personnel. The work is performed under the general direction of the Director of Long Term Care and within the guidelines and standards established by applicable State and Federal laws. A Deputy Director of Long Term Care does related work as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must meet all requirements for the following qualification option in order to be approved for examination and/or appointment: • Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from a New York State or regionally accredited college or university. • Possession of a New York State Nursing Home Administrator’s license.
SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS: New York State Nursing Home Administrator license must be maintained in good standing and without limitations throughout employment.
FINANCE SUPERVISOR The incumbent employs generally accepted accounting procedures in the maintenance and review of financial accounts and records of the appointing authority and assists the Director and/or any higher level financial personnel, if applicable, with grant applications, budgeting, purchasing, and contract oversight. Duties may include the supervision of subordinate clerical employees as specified by the appointing authority.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either: 1. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business administration, economics or another directly related field and two years of accounting experience involving third party insurance billing, budget preparation or financial reporting; or 2. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or business school with an Associate’s degree in accounting or a closely related area of study and four years of experience as defined in paragraph 1 above.
CLERK - PART-TIME The work of employees in this class involves performing routine clerical duties or assisting in the performance of more difficult or responsible clerical work. The work is performed under direct supervision, permitting some exercise of independent judgment in carrying out the details of the work. Detailed instructions may be given for new or difficult assignments. In the County service, employees in this class obtain training and experience which can lead to higher levels of work assignments and responsibilities in their respective agencies. This position differs from the Clerk/Typist and Typist positions which require a higher skill level in typing. A Clerk does related work as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must meet all requirements for one of the following qualification options in order to be approved for examination and/or appointment: • Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma. • Two years of full-time paid experience in a clerical position.
