GVPS HOW CHOCOLATE BECAME TIED TO VALENTINE’S DAY

contents Active Senior Living ____________________13 Arts & Entertainment ____________________21 Auctions & Antiques ____________________14

Heart-shaped boxes filled with decadent treats are coveted gifts on Valentine’s Day. Chocolate lovers typically have a favorite type of chocolate, whether it’s creamy filled truffles or chocolate pieces with fruit or nut fillings. The tradition of gifting chocolate is anything but new. Chocolate and other sweet treats have been offered for centuries as prized gifts. Even ancient Aztecs and Mayans celebrated chocolate and saw it as a hot commodity. Drinks made of cacao beans would be given as presents to people of high status. Chocolate also would be offered to the gods as a token of appreciation. Cacao beans were even used as a form of currency at one point.

FINDING THE RIGHT FENCING Bamboo is a less traditional fencing option that may appeal to homeowners who want to do something that’s both different and eco-friendly. Bamboo grows naturally, which should appeal to homeowners who want their homes to have as little negative impact on the environment as possible. Bamboo provides ample privacy and comes in various styles. Homeowners should consult with a fencing specialist before choosing a style so they can be certain they choose the most climate-appropriate option.

LAWN & LANDSCAPING Hardscaping is an industry term that refers to the non-living features of a landscape. These features can include everything from decks to walkways to ornamental boulders. Introducing paths or paver walls to a property helps develop that home’s hardscape. Hardscape and soft elements often work in concert to create inspiring landscape designs.

PROTECTING YOUR HOM E FROM BURGLARS According to the FBI, nearly 400,000 burglaries occur in the U.S. during November and December each year. And the reason for that should be as obvious as the beards on “ Duck Dynasty’s” male stars’ faces: Those are the months w hen so many of us are either aw ay from home -w hether on vac ation or getting together w ith loved ones -- or busy accumulating piles of shiny new gifts. Improving traction around the house also can minimize falls. Throw rugs and runners can be made more secure with nonslip rubber backings. Bath rugs can reduce slipping on wet surfaces in the bathroom. Also, nonslip mats can be used inside of showers and bathtubs. Use shoe trays to reduce puddling from melting snow or rain runoff in entryways. Mop up spills quickly, and consider the use of matteor textured-finished flooring to improve stability underfoot. Promptly remove snow and ice from driveways and walkways. For those who live in cold climates, heated concrete can help melt precipitation before it accumulates.

HOW TO DETERMINE IF IT’S TIME TO DOWNSIZE Space: Many people love the extra space that single-family homes provide. But seniors can take a walk through their homes and see how many rooms they still use on a consistent basis. If much of the home is unused, seniors can probably downsize without adversely affecting their daily lives.

TIPS TO HELP REALIZE YOUR GOALS THIS YEAR Start small, but start immediately. Lifestyle changes can be difficult, so make small changes initially and gradually work toward larger, more significant changes. Starting small can lay a successful foundation, but it’s also important to start immediately. Procrastination can reduce the likelihood of achieving your goals, and the earlier you get started the more quickly you and your loved ones will adjust to the changes necessary to realize your goals.

Here’s a Tip

* To get a really good shine on your windows, try using newspaper instead of a paper towel. Spray the window with your cleaner and just use the paper like a towel. Practically no lint! * “We save the bread ends and any too-hard or molding bread in our freezer until we can get down to the lake and feed the birds and fish. The ducks especially love it.” -- E.F. in Wisconsin * Drop a couple of crackers (saltines) in your sugar canister if you have problems with clumping. The crackers will keep it from clumping. Just remember they are there if you dip a measuring cup in the canister. You don’t want a bunch of cracker crumbs in your sweet recipe! DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My cat, Buster, has been scratching under his chin for days, and the skin underneath the fur there is getting raw. What is causing this, and how do I stop the scratching and treat the injured skin? -- David G., Buffalo, New York DEAR DAVID: It’s clear that something is aggravating your cat and causing him to scratch in just one spot. The problem could be dry skin -- not unusual for pets or humans in the middle of winter -- or allergies. It may also be an infection, a parasite (mites or ringworm) or an allergic reaction to fleas. If the area that Buster is scratching is not infected, you can try a few home remedies to try to relieve the itching. Oatmeal, cooked and then cooled, is one option. Plain yogurt is another. And coconut oil may help moisturize and protect the skin. Dab one of these gently onto the itchy area. (Just a very thin coat; don’t pile it on.) Repeat as needed. If fleas are an issue, treat both your cat and your home to reduce and eliminate these little pests. Vacuum carpets thoroughly. Sweep all the corners and underneath furniture to remove dust bunnies, where fleas and their eggs can hide. If these remedies don’t work within a couple of days, or if your cat exhibits signs of infection or illness, contact the veterinarian. They need to take a look and see what exactly is causing the itching. They’ll also have medication on hand to combat the itch (hydrocortisone, for one) and treat infection. If Buster is scratching compulsively, they may put him into an E-collar (aka the “Cone of Shame”) for a few days to let the spot heal fully. (c) 2024 King Features Synd., Inc.

Mary E. Phillips of Avon, First African American Woman to Enlist in the Women’s Army Corps BY SUZIE WELLS

F

ebruary is Black History Month. In 1943, Mary E. Phillips of Avon was the first African American woman from Livingston County to enlist in the Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps (WAAC) after attending Avon High School and training at the Wisconsin Vocational School. While full details of her military service and personal life remain unclear, the Avon Preservation & Historical Society did some digging a few years ago, and with the help of Phillips’ family, have discovered more information. While other young women from Livingston County had enlisted by then, 22-year-old Phillips was the first African American woman. She headed to Des Moines, IA from Rochester in March 1943, as part of a small contingent of Black women from this region. According to Livingston County Historian, Holly Watson in the February and May 2020 issues of the AP&HS Newsletter, African American women enlisted for various reasons similar to men and white women at the time, including family military legacy and general patriotism, but African American women may have also sought the equality the WAAC claimed to provide. Notably, segregation continued in barracks and work responsibilities. Massachusetts Representative Edith Rogers introduced a bill to create the WAAC in 1941, and the bombing of Pearl Harbor propelled the bill into law in 1942. Women could finally serve in the Army in noncombat positions other than as nurses. According to the law, servicewomen received official status and salary, but because the WAAC was considered a supplement, they did not provide full benefits and protections until the “Auxiliary” designation was dropped in July 1943 and women in the Women’s Army Corps (WAC) were entitled to Army benefits as male soldiers were. To allow men to enter combat, WACs relieved men of support responsibilities such as clerical, cooking, driving, and medical positions. Thousands of WACs took administrative assignments, though some were selected for special positions, such as air-traffic control and mechanics. Many remained stateside, but some served overseas in North Africa, Europe, and Asia throughout the war. Although many Black Americans joined the war effort, the Army was segregated and instituted a limit on African American enlistees to ten percent of those inducted, to correspond to the national population percentage. During basic training, Black WACs participated in segregated drills, ate in separate mess halls, and retired to segregated barracks. Officer candidates and those attending technical schools were integrated during training but typically were segregated in field assignments.

In July 1943, Auxiliary First Class Phillips (equivalent to Private First Class) was promoted to Technical Sergeant at Fort Dix, New Jersey. According to Watson, the WAAC was about to officially become the WAC, so this rank would have now matched men’s ranks in the Army. However, she was not eligible to serve overseas because she was Black. WACs of color were eager to serve in the same capacity as their white peers, but Black units were not allowed until January 1945.

According to Watson, records suggest Tech. Sgt. Phillips remained stationed at Fort Dix, N.J., likely serving in a segregated Army hospital, until her honorable discharge in December 1943. Returning to civilian life in Rochester, Phillips married Leslie L. Hedman, potentially a Jamaican native, and had eight children. According to Phillips’ descendants, Phillips worked as an LPN at the Rochester Psychiatric Hospital for many years. She represented her Rochester neighborhood at the historic 1963 March on Washington where Martin Luther King Jr gave his iconic “I Have a Dream” speech. According to the family, Phillips’ encouragement and influence led one daughter to serve in the Army for 18 years and a son to join the Navy. Another daughter became an LPN. As Watson declares, Technical Sergeant Phillips’ story is a historic one. As the first woman of color to enlist from Livingston County, she challenged stereotypes and demonstrated exceptional courage, breaking barriers in the realm of skilled military service for women, especially Black women.

Phillips, an enlisted WAC at a rank akin to Private, completed the five-week basic training at Fort Des Moines to learn military rules and customs, perform drills, ceremonies, and perfect administrative and other core skills. She entered the Medical Corps part of the WAAC Service Forces, which entailed further specialized training, which may have been integrated, Watson says.

PLEASE Please don’t sit in your car using a handicap spot waiting for your person. It takes away from those who truly need it. You can drop them off in front of the store and then sit in the front and wait for them. You can see them come out. It’s okay as long as you stay in your car. It’s so hard for me and others truly walking disabled, especially coming out of the store after being on my feet to have to walk any distance whatsoever. And when I see people sitting in the closest handicap spots just upsets me. It’s bad enough we know that there’s people who truly don’t need a handicap spot. I know many of them who do lots of yard work very easily then have a handicap sticker.

Thank you I live in Henrietta and I want to thank the CHS Ambulance crew that helped me Saturday, January 27th around 5:00 PM. I am grateful not only for their knowledge and expertise, but how they treated me. They were both great. Thank you CHS. Thank you Thank you! On Thursday, Feb. 1, I ate lunch at a local restaurant in Clifton Springs. I had soup, sandwich, and coffee -- all delicious. When I asked for the bill, I was told it had been taken care of and I was all set. To whomever paid my bill, thank you! It was very thoughtful and much appreciated!

Ablation Is Only Recommended If Meds Are Intolerable ---

Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology

DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 67-year-old man who developed typical atrial flutter two years ago, but I haven’t had any symptoms that I am aware of. I don’t have a history of heart problems. My heart rate was 117 bpm while experiencing atrial flutter. My cardiologist recommended an ablation, as that can be curative. He specializes in electrophysiology. The ablation was successful, and my heart rate was in the low 60s afterward. Six months ago, atrial fibrillation (AFib) showed up, but again, there weren’t any real symptoms for me. My heart rate is nice and low, and I never really feel any problems ... perhaps some fatigue. But at 67, I can’t always distinguish this from the feeling of getting older. I’m on Xarelto and a low dose of carvedilol. My blood pressure is good. Is it worth having an ablation of the pulmonary veins to try and stop AFib? Or is it better to just live with an irregular heartbeat? Apparently, it’s best to have an ablation sooner rather than later, so I’ll need to decide as soon as possible. -- D.S. ANSWER: Atrial flutter is an abnormally fast heart rhythm that starts in one of the top chambers of the heart, usually the right atrium. The heart rate in the atria is very fast, typically 240-300 bpm, which is faster than any adult heart can beat. It is common that every other impulse in the atria gets transmitted to the ventricle, so a pulse rate in the range of 120-150 bpm would be typical. Catheter ablation prevents the progression of the fast impulse to the rest of the heart, and it is successful 65% to 100% of the time in various studies. Unfortunately, studies have also shown that somewhere between 7% and 44% of those who had a successful catheter ablation for atrial flutter will later have a recurrence -- or more commonly develop AFib. This is called a chaotic arrythmia and can cause a fast heart rate, but more importantly, the lack of coordinated heart contractions in the atria can predispose people to the development of a clot in the atrium. The clot can then float downstream where it can lodge and cause damage, specifically a stroke. Each year, a percentage of 5% of people with AFib will develop a stroke without treatment. Treatment is designed to relieve symptoms and reduce stroke risk -- your cardiologist has already achieved both of these aims pretty well. The carvedilol is a beta blocker that helps keep the heart rate under control, and Xarelto is effective at reducing stroke risk. In my opinion, there isn’t a need to consider another treatment like an ablation, which has a small but real potential for serious side effects. In fact, it is not 100% effective; about 70% to 75% of patients are symptom-free a year after the procedure. Many people need to continue anticoagulants like Xarelto even after a successful catheter ablation. I recommend ablation for people who cannot tolerate medication treatment for their symptoms.

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT NERVE INJURIES What do peripheral nerves do? Johns Hopkins Medicine notes that peripheral nerves send messages from the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body. This is done through a network of 43 pairs of motor and sensory nerves that control the functions of sensation, movement and motor coordination.

WHY THE FLU SHOT IS SO IMPORTANT IN 2020

As the world continues to confront the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus, it’s imperative that people everywhere take every step necessary to protect themselves and others. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that a flu vaccine will not protect people against COVID-19. However, flu vaccines have been shown to reduce the risk of illness related to the flu. Those illnesses weaken people’s immune systems, making them more vulnerable to other viruses, including COVID-19. Flu vaccines have also been shown to reduce the risk of hospitalization. That’s a significant benefit of being vaccinated, as people who get their flu shots can indirectly help hospitals conserve potentially scarce resources.

IMPROVE OVERALL ENDURANCE Have a good emotional connection. A desire to have a great body may not be enough to motivate you to workout and push harder. If not, think of a better reason to exercise, and it may be the mind over matter you need. Many people find inspiration from family health history risk factors or through the goal of reversing negative health reports from doctors’ offices. These motivating factors will help you press on and push harder.

Calder and Bailey and Dansville Dental Associates in Dansville. Outside of her professional life, Marian loved to sew, bake and garden. These hobbies brought her great joy and allowed her to express her creativity and nurturing nature. Marian is survived by her daughters: Marlene Pickard Guy (Ken), Arlene Pickard Rusert, Marianne Pickard Barnes (Patrick), and Deborah Pickard Barnes (Duane); grandsons, James Porter, Corey Barnes (Tamara), Colin Barnes (Kaci); granddaughters, Kristen Barnes and Caitlin Barnes; and great-grandson, Beau Barnes. Marian was preceded in death by her parents; spouse, Howard W. Pickard; daughter, Kathleen Pickard Porter; grandson, Earl “Buddy” Rusert and siblings, H. Francis Schuster, Magdeline Schuster, Clement Leo Schuster, Dorothy Schuster, Wilfred (Bill) Schuster and Joseph Schuster.

3.

Throughout her life Marian’s faith brought her strength and comfort. She was a life member of St. Mary’s Church and Holy Family Catholic Community. A funeral Mass will be held at a later date to honor and celebrate Marian’s remarkable life. Her legacy of love, dedication, and creativity will continue to inspire all who knew her. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Dansville Ambulance or Noyes Hospital Medical Alert Program.

DID YOU KNOW? According to Mental Health America, individuals’ reactions to the death of a loved one can elicit unique emotions linked to their relationship to the deceased. For example, MHA, a community-based nonprofit focused on promoting mental health, notes that a child’s death could inspire different feelings than the loss of an elderly spouse. When parents lose a child, that death may arouse a sense of injustice that can overwhelm the child’s parents as they contemplate lost potential, unfulfilled dreams and, in certain instances, the child’s suffering. Elderly individuals who lose a spouse may be overcome by feelings of loneliness. Recognition of these different reactions is important because it can help individuals and their support networks more effectively cope with their grief.
