Buy fresh foods at your local farmers market.Farmers markets are many foodies’ favorite places, but they aren’t exclusive to individuals with a passion for food. Everyone needs to eat,so why not eat foods grown locally, which are generally more fresh and appetizing than imported fruits and vegetables sold at chain grocery stores? Even individuals who don’t typically eat fresh fruit and vegetables can find something delectable at a local farmers market, where anything from homemade tomato sauces to locally raised fresh beef and pork might be on sale.
Wayland, New York - On November 5, 2024, the United States will head to the polls to elect its next President. Among the candidates vying for the position is Richard C. Curtiss, a farmer and businessman from Wayland, New York. Curtiss has officially announced his candidacy as a write-in candidate for one term as President of the United States ( One 4 Year Term) in the 2024 Presidential election and is determined to bring positive change to the country. He believes that the agricultural industry is the backbone of the nation and is committed to implementing policies that will support and strengthen it. With his extensive knowledge and experience in the field, Curtiss aims to improve the lives of farmers and ensure food security for all Americans. e Curtiss-Bright Ranch dairy farm comprises 120,000 acres of the 220,220 acres Curtiss purchased in Dade County, Florida and Wayland, NY. CURTISS has always been passionate about agriculture and food production for the world.
In addition to his expertise in agriculture, Curtiss also has a strong background in military and aviation. He has a deep understanding of the importance of National Security and Homeland Security. As President, Curtiss plans to prioritize the safety and well-being of the American people by strengthening the US Military and investing in advanced aviation technology.

Take to social media. Though it certainly has its detractors, social media remains wildly popular. An April 2023 report from Global WebIndex indicated 60 percent of the world’s population uses social media, and the daily average usage is two hours and 24 minutes. Data from Meta indicates that 83 percent of Instagram users discover new brands while using the platform. Such reports illustrate how effective positive reviews and references to small local businesses can be. Consumers won’t need much time to share a story about a great local business on their social media accounts, but that small investment of time can pay big
for those companies.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 77-year-old male who apparently suffered a case of food poisoning. I say apparently because no cause was ever discovered for the uncontrollable vomiting and diarrhea that lasted for a whole day and recurred briefly the following morning. A trip to the emergency room involved many tests, but nothing turned up except a troponin level well over 0.04 ng/mL, which prompted an angiogram that didn’t reveal any problems with my heart. What else might have caused my high troponin level? -- Anon.
ANSWER: A troponin level is a standard blood test usually used to evaluate patients for heart attacks. However, newer, highly sensitive assays have proven that tiny levels of troponin may be detected in nearly everybody.
A level above 0.04 ng/mL is often used as the cutoff for the “normal” range, but depending on the assay and population studied, a few healthy people may have levels above this. People with heart attacks may have troponin levels in the hundreds or thousands. The higher the troponin level, the more muscle damage there is. The fact that your coronary arteries don’t show any blockages is very good news. Other types of heart damage may also cause a high troponin level, including inflammation of the heart (myocarditis) and heart failure. Also, critical illnesses can cause high troponin levels (at much higher levels than you may have had) in people who don’t have heart blockages. (A median of 0.57 ng/ mL was found in people with septic shock.)
I found a long list of reported causes behind elevated troponin levels, but gastroenteritis was not on the list. I suspect your body was working so hard to fight off the infection without enough fluid that your heart needed more oxygen-carrying blood than it got, leading to tiny amounts of injury to the heart muscle despite normal heart arteries. You can lose a lot of fluid with vomiting and diarrhea, and people at age 77 don’t have as much reserve as they did when they were younger.

How does PA help farmers? Each situation is unique, but the principles of PA can help farmers access a wealth of information. It might have been possible to access such information in the past, but PA has sped up the process and made it more handsoff, allowing farmers to save both time and money. PA technology can help farmers maintain accurate records of their farms; inform their decisions; make it easier to detect and identify problems, sometimes before they escalate into larger issues; and avoid potentially costly mistakes.

Fred Beam’s journey is a testament to resilience, passion, and breaking barriers. Born in Covington, Georgia, and raised in Tampa, Florida, Fred overcame obstacles surrounding his deafness and embraced his passion for the performing arts against the odds.
Attending the Tampa Oral School for the Deaf as early as three years old, when Fred transitioned to mainstream elementary and middle school classrooms without an interpreter in a time before the passage of the ADA Law, he faced significant challenges.
Despite these hurdles, Fred’s determination and support from his family propelled him forward. Fred’s parents, both educators, instilled in him the value of education. His mother, an elementary school teacher, and his father, a middle school music teacher, emphasized the importance of academic success. He graduated with top honors from King High School, 16th out of about 500 students.
Fred’s love for dance was ignited at the age of seven when he watched Michael Jackson perform on American Bandstand. Fred says he remembers mimicking Jackson’s moves and being inspired to dance. However, his mother discouraged the pursuit, believing academic achievements would lead to a better future, especially for someone who cannot hear. In his twenties, Fred says the music videos of the 1980s and ‘90s were a powerful influence on his life, and musical theater particularly attracted him.
When Fred attended the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID) at the Rochester Institute of Technology to earn his AAS in Electronic Mechanical Technology, he had the opportunity to explore his love for dance and theater. He says teacher, Jerome Cushman encouraged Fred to explore the dance field, and “the rest was history.”
Upon graduating from the NTID, Fred established a local deaf dance company, Invisible Hands, Inc. with interpreter Debbie Drobney, but returned to his family in Florida to earn his bachelor’s degree in electronic engineering technology from Tampa Technical Institute, where he credits interpreters being provided by then for his success, and he proudly graduated as valedictorian.
From there, he headed to Washington DC to join the National Deaf Dance eater, and then founded the first all-male deaf dance company, e Wild Zappers, with Irvine Stewart and Warren “Wawa” Snipe. When Irvine graduated, Fred took the reins, running the company for over twenty years. He also took over as director of the National Deaf Dance eater. Fred says his favorite performance was when e Wild Zappers captivated audiences in Japan with their “Free Your Mind” routine and returned to perform in Japan consistently for over ten years.
In addition to his accomplishments in the performing arts, Fred taught math for over 30 years, so when Sunshine 2.0 sought an Outreach Coordinator with experience in the Arts as well as STEM, Fred was a perfect fit. In this role, he develops workshops and performances that incorporate the arts into the STEM world. He explains that his job is to entertain and educate school-aged students, college students, and the community. “STEAM is here to stay and encourage students to pursue [the fields] so that they can have a bright future,” he says.
Sunshine 2.0, established in 2016, a modern iteration of Sunshine Too, is a traveling performing arts program that promotes deaf awareness, social issues, and environmental advocacy, with an enhanced emphasis on the diversity of today’s ASL users and allies. It fosters inclusivity and understanding by showcasing the talents of deaf performers and incorporating sign language and captioning into its shows. Since its inception, this troupe has performed over 12,500 times for more than 1.3 million people worldwide.
Looking ahead, Fred is excited about upcoming shows and activities Sunshine 2.0 has planned, such as a workshop called Storytelling: Incorporating Arts in the STEM Classroom that presents educators and students with another way of learning. Fred loves the organization’s ASL Poetry/Storytelling with STEM content (find these music videos by searching Sunshine 2.0 on YouTube).
Fred’s overall advice to all people, deaf and hearing, educators, aspiring performers, and the general community, is: “Diversity wins, and deaf and hearing people can successfully interact and engage with one another. We all need to educate and inspire each other to make a community a better place. Positivity goes a long way!”
Fred Beam’s story is a testament to the power of passion, perseverance, and the transformative potential of the performing arts. Inspiring others, Fred continues to illuminate new paths for generations to come.

Eileen Schaefer, Canadice Town ClerkTelecommunications According to the NDC, telecommunications technology has evolved considerably in recent decades. That evolution has made it easier than ever for deaf individuals to communicate.
The NDC notes that telecommunications technology for deaf individuals is an umbrella term that includes telephone devices, platforms and services that are employed when standard phones are ineffective. The NDC identifies three primary telecommunications services:
1. Video relay service (VRS)
2. Telecommunications relay service (TRS)
3. Video remote interpreting (VRI)
Regulated by the Federal Communications Commission,VRS and TRS are free programs, whereas VRI is a fee-based service. TRS is a text-driven service that, unlike VRI and VRS, does not employ video.

* In the 18th century, Napoleon Bonaparte and Benjamin Franklin were both defeated at chess by a machine called the Mechanical Turk -- or at least they thought they were. It was later revealed to be quite the elaborate hoax, with a highly skilled chess master hiding inside the “machine” and moving the pieces against the opponent.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have a neighbor who puts both of her cats on leashes and walks them through the neighborhood each day. Shouldn’t they be outside on their own, prowling and doing cat stuff? Sign me -- Concerned Cat Mom in Providence, Rhode Island
DEAR CONCERNED: As long as the cats aren’t distressed by the leash, I don’t see a problem.
Some cats are completely uninterested in exploring the world outside, and some are downright fearful of it. And that’s totally fine. Others, however, want to be outside every chance they get.
Letting cats wander outside puts them at risk of being struck by a car, attacked by wildlife or feral cats, or contracting an illness. Cats can be a menace to other creatures, so much so that there’s evidence they are impacting the bird population. Songbirds are already under threat from climate change and bird flu (which spreads just as easily among wild birds as it does on chicken farms), so adding another predator to the list is not a good thing.
Putting a cat on a leash (and in a harness, rather than a collar) is a great way to help them explore while keeping them safe. It’s also helpful when taking your cat on long car trips -- they can stretch their legs safely at rest stops.
For those who’d like to try walking their cat, buy a harness that fits your cat. Cats won’t like the harness at first; put it on and just let them get used to it while you hold the leash loosely. Make it a positive experience with lots of treats. Once they start exploring comfortably with the harness on, walk around with them, guiding them. Don’t tug on the leash or drag them. Pick them up if they won’t move, but always keep it positive.

How Two Strangers Brightened My Demeanor
It was a cold rainy day and at age 82, I didn’t want to drive on 490 in heavy traffic to Rochester General Hospital from my home to visit my wife of 59 years. I took an Uber ride. I struck up a conversation with the driver, Mike, for the 15 minute drive. He was a good conversationalist, stating he had retired in the past year. He was driving part-time to work for another year to save more money for he and his wife’s dream vacation to Aruba. I told him how happy I was for him. Then at 8PM visiting curfew hour came and I got another Uber. This time it was a woman in her late 30’s. In our talk she stated that she had 3 children, ages 8,11 and 14 but she was divorced. Unbelievably she worked a full-time job in the day and part-time at Uber three nights a week for 4 hours each night. When she got me to my home I told her to just wait in the driveway. I gave her a bottled water and an apple. Life is not easy.
I often see people standing outside smoking a cigarette and then they either just throw it on the ground or throw it down in the drains. I often wonder if they think by throwing it in the drain they’re doing us a favor. But they’re not. There’s toxic chemicals, Arsenic and Lead that will be released into the environment and contaminate our water. I don’t know about you, but I like drinking clean water and breathing clean air. You would think everybody would want to drink clean water.
I want to recognize & commend the extraordinary efforts of your publication’s Featured Media staff, specifically Jenna for going the extra mile in assisting me with the printing and on-time delivery of photo Christmas cards. Although I thought I was allowing enough time to upload & submit my choice photo for printing of the cards, my inadequacies in properly doing so (I am somewhat tech-challenged) presented difficulties to the graphic design staff. But with Jenna’s patience & perseverance she was able to not only work her magic in getting the cards printed successfully, she also apologized (though not at all her fault) for the delay, and ended up expediting the shipment for delivery. Kudos.
(By the way, why have the former Raves/Rants columns been replaced by the far-less-catchy terms “Brighter/Vent”?)
If you’re going to stand and talk on your cell phone, please don’t stand next to the crosswalks or have a social discussion there either. If you’re going to be on your phone, at least move further away instead of remaining there.
I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over

To the casual observer, Passover and Easter may not to seem to have much in common. While the two holidays are celebrated by people of different faiths, they share certain similarities. Both Passover and Easter celebrate fundamental tenets of their respective faiths. For Christians, Easter commemorates the death andresurrectionofJesusChrist,a moment that has shaped the lives of faithful Christians ever since. During Passover, Jews honor a momentinhistorythathelpedfree slaves from captivity and shape them into the people of Israel. In addition, historians believe that the Passion of Christ, which is the short final period of Jesus’ life, occurred during the observance ofPesach,orPassover.Duringthis time, Jesus went to Jerusalem in response to a mandate to appear at the Temple. It also is believed that the Last Supper described in all four Gospels was likely a Passover seder. Liberation and rebirth also are at the heart of both holidays.
