PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM

Passages ____________________34

Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

Honeoye Falls-Lima Hall of Fame a Time-Honored Tradition BY M A K AY L A H O LL I M A N

G

raduation for the Class of 2022 is just around the corner, and the Honeoye Falls-Lima Central School District is commemorating their moments by encouraging their seniors to sign up for the Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame has honored Honeoye Falls-Lima (HF-L) graduates for nearly 30 years. Cathy Hoose of HF-L’s Technology Services clarified some additional aspects of the school’s Hall of Fame, traditions, and other ways the school program plans to celebrate the Class of 2022. The Hall of Fame was established in 1995 by retired principal James Dollard. The motivation behind it was to recognize HF-L graduates who achieved and contributed to their school, community, and country in the years following graduation as well as to provide positive role models for current students in the district while establishing recognition of these graduates as a worthy and good exercise for success. Any graduate of the school, living or deceased, may enter or be nominated to be a part of the Hall of Fame. Its requirements consist of one’s educational background, volunteer assistance for the community, civic development, affi liations, honors, awards, publications, and items in addition to education. Each year in May, the Hall of Fame Committee, which consists of 13 school and community members, reviews each nomination packet then decides on whom to recognize by a unanimous vote by late May.

participate. In this parade, community members and local businesses donate showcase cars (convertibles) to drive the inductees around town. At last, there is the Homecoming Football Game Coin Toss wherein inductees are introduced at the start of the Football game and participate in the coin toss. Finally, the Induction Ceremony takes place in the late afternoon, usually after the football game. Inductees, their family members, and everyone in the community are invited to a presentation ceremony at Honeoye Falls-Lima High School. Inductees are introduced by a committee member, and a song is chosen by the choir for each specific student to sing. Each student then receives a Honeoye Falls-Lima Alumni Hall of Fame pin; a memory book that includes their nomination information, certificate of induction, details of Fall Weekend, a bouquet of flowers, and a HF-L umbrella. As schools prepares to close the final chapter for the 2022 graduating class, Honeoye Falls-Lima Central School District is giving the Class of 2022 memories they will cherish for years to come.

While waiting for the results, HF-L does several other things to celebrate. During the Fall, Hall of Fame inductees are invited to a number of Fall Weekend celebrations. One of the celebrations included is the “HOF inductees visit the schools day,” during which students visit classrooms to present and discuss their HF-L accomplishments and experiences with other students. On Saturday mornings, the school holds Meet and Greets to introduce inductees to the Honeoye Falls-Lima Leadership Team and Board of Education Members. There’s also a weekend parade in which inductees may

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * March 3 is known as “What if Cats and Dogs Had Opposable Thumbs Day.”

THE HISTORY OF CORSAGES The term “corsage” was once a reference to the bodice of a woman’s dress. The first corsages were actually worn on the bodice, which is the part of a woman’s dress that is above the waist, and some believed the corsage could ward off evil spirits. According to PollenFloralDesign.com, by the 1900s, corsages were worn closer to the shoulder than the bodice. At this time, the flowers were pinned on upside down, with the bow at the top. The corsages were also larger at this time than they are today. The tradition of giving corsages to young ladies on their prom nights is relatively recent. In fact, many historians agree that this practice likely began in the 20th century in the United States when gentlemen would typically arrive to pick up their prom dates bearing bouquets of flowers for their dates’ parents. The young men would then remove one flower from the bouquet and attach it to their dates’ dress.

AT-HOME NUTRITION AND COOKING WITH KIDS RECIPES FOR FUN: If you’re preparing a meal, it could be a good time to teach children of reading age how to review a recipe. Evaluating ingredients to learn how food transforms from raw to cooked or how a dish is created can help kids learn kitchen skills. FOOD GROUPS FOCUS: Get kids involved in making dinner by setting a rule that each food group must be represented. Give them a warmup activity by asking which food groups are found in family favorites like chicken soup, lasagna or meatloaf. Asking kids to guess which ingredients are used in these dishes and identifying which food group each ingredient belongs to can help them understand dietary balance.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Yellow Lenses to Rescue for Macular Degeneration ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have an elderly friend who’s becoming blind from macular degeneration. After hearing of a particularly frustrating event she experienced due to vision loss, I remembered the great clarity that the yellow-lens (to reduce glare) glasses gave me, not just at night, but daytime also. So, I sent her a pair to see if it would help, as a lastditch effort. She called me crying, it had made such a difference! She has now had her prescription eyeglasses done with the yellow (blue-canceling?) lenses. Of course, we understand that this is just a temporary help, and won’t prevent the blindness from taking its course, but it has given her much better vision for a time. -- I.L.B. ANSWER: Age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss in industrialized countries. It is a degeneration of the central part of the retina, called the macula, which is responsible for fine detail central vision. The underlying cause is not precisely known, and the course is progressive. I was able to find a 2002 study that confirmed that yellow or orange lenses improved contrast sensitivity in people with early age-related macular degeneration, whereas red and gray lenses worsened it. Another study suggested that the perceived benefit (the subjective experience by the person) was enhanced, but that objective improvement in vision was not actually improved much at all. In my opinion, perceived benefit is still worth a great deal, and since there is little effective treatment for the more common “dry” form of ARMD beyond vitamins and smoking cessation, I am publishing your letter in hopes that some people will get improvements in their vision, as your friend did, from this low-cost treatment with essentially no risk of side effects. ***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2021 North America Synd., Inc., All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

STATISTICS ABOUT MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS MS can cost a person $30,000 to $100,000 per year, based on the severity of the disease.

AVOID INJURIES WHEN WORKING OUT A desire to live a healthy, active life compels many people to include exercise in their daily routines. Numerous studies have shown that regular workouts that include a combination of strength training and cardiovascular exercise can make bodies less susceptible to injury while reducing a person’s risk for conditions such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes. Exercising is most effective when it’s part of a daily routine, but that routine can be derailed if men and women are not taking the appropriate measures to avoid injury while working out. While even professional athletes succumb to injury from time to time, there are steps everyone can take to avoid injury when working out. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

DID YOU KNOW? Halitosis, or bad breath as it’s commonly known, can result from any number of factors. While food can be a culprit, some additional factors may be contributing to mouth odor as well. Poor dental hygiene is a particular concern. According to Colgate and the American Dental Association, failure to brush and floss teeth regularly leads to the accumulation of food particles in the mouth. This food can collect bacteria and begin to break down, causing a bad aroma. Dry mouth is another condition that causes bad breath. Without adequate saliva production, particles of food that may cause odor are not swept away regularly. Bad breath also may be an indication of a medical condition elsewhere in the body. Upper respiratory infections and gastrointestinal disturbances may contribute to halitosis.

HOW TO BE A BETTER HEALTH CARE CONSUMER

HOW COMMUNITIES CAN RECOGNIZE NURSES

Learn about the benefits associated with preventive care. Many health insurance plans offer rebates to consumers who have memberships at fitness facilities and use those memberships a certain number of times in a set period of time. These benefits aren’t just ways to save money. They’re also powerful motivators to engage in preventive health care, which is one of the best ways for health care consumers to save money over the long haul.

Sponsor fundraising efforts. Town officials can help to organize a community-wide fundraising effort or a 50-50 raffle with the ultimate goal of donating to a charitable organization chosen by local nurses. Health care facilities have been stretched incredibly thin during the pandemic, so a donation to a charitable organization that benefits health care workers can be a great way for communities to honor local nurses.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Don’t Forget to Provide for Pets in Your Will DEAR PAW’S CORNER: As an attorney who helps clients prepare wills, I’d like to urge your readers to review their end-of-life plans and make sure that their pets are provided for. It’s so important to designate a new caregiver for their pets so that they are quickly rehomed to a person who will love and care for them. I own a lovable German Shepherd, and each year, I review my own life plan and adjust it if needed -- usually an adjustment in the amount I’ll give to his future caregiver to help with the financial aspects of taking in a pet, which can be substantial. -- Darren H., Philadelphia DEAR DARREN: Thank you for this reminder. None of us likes to think about the possibility of dying, but as people who love and care for our pets, we need to do it for them, and make sure they will be loved and cared for. You can read more about how to include a pet clause in your will at this link: https://tinyurl. com/3yjbzmdx. What if you’re not in a position to make or update your will at this time? Put it on your to-do list, and in the meantime, make a list of trusted relatives and friends who you think would be good caregivers for your pet. Contact each of them to ask if they’d be willing to take in your pet if something should happen to you. This type of informal arrangement will give you some peace of mind. As soon as you’re able to do so, create a written will or review your existing will. This helps ensure that your pet will go to a loving home and minimize their stress and grief.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles

Waiting Out COVID

An unscientific poll of senior friends and neighbors revealed just what we’ve accomplished during the past two years of this pandemic. The answer: not much. Mostly, it seems, we’ve been waiting. Waiting for it to be safe to shop in person. Waiting for our clubs and meetings to start up again. Waiting for a visit from family across the country that has feared bringing COVID to our door. Waiting for all the vaccines and boosters to do what they were supposed to do. Waiting to be unafraid again. In the beginning we were all for following the rules. We seniors are a tough bunch, and we know a lot. We have coping skills that got us through any number of crises life has thrown at us. But this pandemic has brought many of us to our knees. Each person in my humble survey could, when queried, point to the exact time when the tide turned in their mental health. It was the omicron variant and the additional vaccine booster, when it became apparent that COVID wasn’t going away soon. For me, a daily to-do list has come in handy. On a sheet of paper I have two columns: one work, one play. In the work column there are household tasks such as doing one load of laundry. In the play column are things like wiping the dust off the piano and learning a new song each week. On the back of the page are two more columns. One is a list of names, and somebody gets called every day. In the other column is an ever-lengthening list of things that are going right. This one is sometimes hard to fill out, but it gets done, even if it’s only notes like: Completed a crossword puzzle in seven minutes. Try it. Make your lists, especially if you’ve felt yourself sinking under the weight of this never-ending pandemic. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

DESIGN A GARDEN FOR ALL SENSES Aesthetic appeal is one of the most sought-after benefits of gardening. However, many homeowners put in so much effort planting for one particular season that they may not give thought to ensuring the garden looks vibrant no matter the time of year. Gardeners can research planting zones to find plants that will blossom at different times of the year so they can enjoy impressive, aesthetically appealing gardens year-round. Spring bulbs can bloom early on, while annual and perennial summer favorites will thrive under the summer sun. Beautyberry and caryopteris will fill out in the autumn, while holly or mahonia can look lovely in the winter.

* For moister and softer cookies, use honey as a substitute for a third of the sugar in your cookie recipe. * And speaking of honey, did you know it has antibacterial properties? Yep! Try rubbing a bit of it over a small cut for faster, more natural healing. * “Keep venetian blinds from sticking to one another and discourage dust by rubbing them down individually with a sheet of fabric softener. This effect will last at least a month, in my experience.” -- S.F. in Alabama

* “Have a headache? Try drinking a couple of glasses of a sports drink. This works for my friends and me. Maybe we just need to be drinking more water, but the sports drinks get us back on track more quickly than medicine most times.” -- E.L. in Colorado * “This time-tested tip will keep your houseplants in the green while you’re away from home: Set plants in the bathtub in an inch or less of water. If your flowerpot does not have drain holes, get a short length of cotton rope and feed it from the topsoil to the tub. This will keep plants alive and thriving for a week or more.” -- D.R. in Florida * “Having a hard time cutting out soda? Try this: Every time you reach for a glass of soda, drink a full cup of water first. You will find that your thirst is sated better, and you are not as “thirsty” for that sugar water!” -- F.E. in South Carolina

Angry Recently, it seems many are hung up over the price of gas. Hey folks, there are harmless people dying and families forever being torn apart, and you are complaining about having to pay a bit more for fuel? We are one of the richest nations on earth with the lowest gas prices. I certainly don’t like it, but it is a tiny price to pay compared to the horrible situation befalling many others! I’m angry.

S E V RA It’s spring! Just a friendly reminder that it is spring, and soon the animals out there will be having babies. Many will be out looking for food to feed their babies. Watch out for them because, if they are killed, you will be killing the babies, too, since they will starve to death. Also, with the deer, if a deer crosses in front of you, stop and watch for a baby. Many times the baby is lagging behind mom. I even do this when more than one deer are up ahead of me because you never know how many more are coming. I watch the sides of the road for any animal. By doing all of this, I have never hit or killed a animal. Have a great spring!

Hair? They spent our tax money on hair style discrimination? We can’t afford food, gas, or utilities, yet our lovely government spent weeks – and our money – discussing hair? I guess they want us middle class folks weak and dependent upon our government. Thank God I still have my right arm to work...and vote.

Bags for you! To the person who wrote a few weeks ago about paper versus plastic bags: Why not use a reusable fabric bag? They are not a new idea, and I would be happy to pass on any number of the reusable bags I’ve collected. I collect, wash, and dry them, and they’re ready for a new home. I’d even be happy to sew you your very own reusable fabric bag and created an email account just for you: isewbagsforyou@gmail.com. Drop me a note and I’ll happily sew you a bag. Just promise me that you’ll actually use it (more than once)!

Kudos, Avon Lions Club! Rain or shine (or snow!), the Avon Lions Club puts on a chicken barbecue every spring, and our family looks forward to it each time. Club members are always there in good spirits and with smiling faces, even when the weather doesn’t cooperate. Thanks for the great meal and your commitment to the community!

How thoughtful! To the kind lady at Eastview Mall with her grandkids: it was so nice of you to purchase a carousel ride for the little girl who looked to be all of three years old. You can only ride the carousel if you have dollar bills, and her mother only had a credit card. Kudos!

Betty Keeler Sick Mehlenbacher February 20th, 2022 Chula Vista, CA: Betty Keeler Sick Mehlenbacher, 95, passed away peacefully on February 20th, at her home. Betty was born January 31, 1927 in Bath, N.Y., the daughter of Fay and Jessie Keeler. She grew up in many small towns in Upstate New York, depending on where her father found work. The family eventually settled in Cohocton, N.Y., where her father passed away in 1943. Betty graduated from Cohocton Central School in 1945. While there she met her first husband, Harold Sick, and they were married in November 1947 in Cohocton. Over the next 6 years they became the parents of John, Elaine, and Donna. In October 1953, Harold was stricken with polio and passed away quickly. In October 1954, Betty married John Mehlenbacher and they became parents to daughter Sandy in September 1955. Betty, John, and 4 children moved to California in July 1956 and eventually settled in Chula Vista. From 1958 thru 1965, 3 more daughters joined the family: Cindy, Lori, and Gayle. Many trips “back home” to New York took place over the years. The most adventuresome happened in 1963 with Betty and John taking 6 children on a cross country bus trip from San Diego, CA to Dansville, N.Y. Betty always had an interest in Nursing from early childhood and into her high school years. In 1970, at the age of 43, she enrolled at Southwestern College in Chula Vista. That same year her youngest child enrolled in kindergarten. Upon graduation in 1972, which was attended by her weeks old first grandchild, Betty received her Associate’s Degree in Nursing. This degree enabled Betty to not only fulfill her lifelong dream but also provide another income to the family finances that would help support the 4 youngest children still at home. Over the years, especially with 7 children at home, money was tight, although the children never knew that. John worked a lot of overtime and no meals were ever missed and never did any of the family feel they had to do without or not have what was needed. Betty wanted to make sure that the family still at home continued with that same mindset. After graduation, Betty went to work for Bay General Hospital (later known as Scripps Memorial Hospital/ Chula Vista). She eventually became a Preceptor for OB Nurses and worked there for 17 years until retirement. At 62, Betty became a full-time grandmother for her almost 3 year old granddaughter, Lindsay, who came to live with John and Betty. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

John and Betty celebrated over 53 years of marriage before John passed away in February 2008 from Alzheimer’s Disease. Betty nursed John at home over the last 3 years of his life with tender, loving care. John and Betty shared a very loving life, raised 7 children together, spent many hours with friends and family for meals and trips, and were very proud of the life that they created together. A sense of “family” was very important to them and something to pass on to their children. Betty was an avid San Diego Padres and San Diego Chargers (until they defected to Los Angeles) fan for many years. She rarely missed any of their games on TV and was an in person spectator to many games over the years. She knew the players of both teams and could hold her own in any conversations about the players. Betty had a deep and abiding love of God and the Power of Prayer. She prayed daily for others and prayer was an active part of her daily life. She was a current and founding member of Concordia Lutheran Church in 1960, in Chula Vista, and participated in the life of the church in many, many areas throughout the years. Betty was most proud of being a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, a nurse, and a Christian. Her legacy is that of being the best possible role model for her family and friends. She was immensely proud of her family and leaves behind nothing but beautiful memories. Betty is survived by her children, John (Reid Perkins), Elaine (Ken Vockrodt), Donna (Bill Phillips), Sandy Huntington, Cindy Payton, Lori (Harvey King) and Gayle Mehlenbacher; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; sister, Helen Contos; sisters-in-law, Mary (Rod) Lindsay, Joan ( Joe) Schwartz, Dot Mehlenbacher; brothersin-law, Jim Mehlenbacher, Bill Mehlenbacher; several nieces and nephews; and her church family. Betty was predeceased by husbands, Harold Sick and John Mehlenbacher; her parents, Fay Keeler and Jessie Keeler Thompson; her mothers and fathers-in-law, Walter and Freida Sick and Arthur and Mildred Mehlenbacher; her sister, Agnes Reed; her brothers-in-law, Gus Contos, Ronald Reed, Don Mehlenbacher, Walt Mehlenbacher, Dick Mehlenbacher, Harold Mehlenbacher, and Clair Mehlenbacher. A Celebration of Betty’s Life will be held at Concordia Church in Chula Vista on Saturday, May 7th at 11:00 A.M. The Celebration can be viewed later that day at www.youtube.com/c/ ConcordiaChurchandSchool.

LEAVING A JOB GRACEFULLY Speak with your manager first. It’s respectful for your immediate manager or supervisor to learn of your departure first. This gives him or her ample time to put a plan in place to fill your position. The more notice you can give, the more goodwill you’re building on your way out the door. Schedule a meeting for this purpose; do not make it an informal chat by the water cooler. Resist the urge to quit via email or text. Resigning requires face-toface communication. Present a concise letter of resignation as well. Don’t call out colleagues or air your grievances in the letter.

ADVICE FOR A SUCCESSFUL CAREER CHANGE Individuals change jobs for many reasons, including greater professional satisfaction, money or a change of location. The financial experts at The Balance say that people change jobs more frequently than many people may think, noting today’s average worker changes jobs 12 times during his or her career. It is not uncommon for workers to change careers several times in a lifetime. The notion that the job a person starts out in directly after graduation is the one that he or she will have for the rest of his or her life - or at the very least, several years - is no longer the norm. Many younger workers migrate between jobs for greater compensation and fulfillment. Older workers, too, are faced with career stagnation. A survey from the University of Phoenix School of Business found 59 percent of working adults say they’re interested in taking the leap of a midlife career change. Once the idea for a career change has been planted in a person’s mind, he or she may be anxious to jump right in. However, career coaches and other experts say that it is better to take the transition slowly and confirm that changing careers is truly the path to take. Finding the right time for the transition is equally important. EMPLOYMENT

Hobbies may not take up too much time, and travel can stretch retirees’ budgets. One way that retirees can make great use of their free time and make a little extra money is to find part-time employment. Part-time jobs can help retirees maintain their connections with their communities, whether it’s their professional community or the community in which they live, while also providing a sense of purpose.

Conservation methods can help save energy and preserve natural resources, but business owners may also be intrigued by the potential cost-savings of conservation. Utility costs vary depending on the size of a business, but the U.S. Small Business Administration notes that prospective business owners must estimate and include such costs when seeking loans to start their businesses. Estimated utility costs can be intimidating, especially for those owners who have never before owned their own businesses. Traditional conservation methods like recycling and reusing are great ways to conserve and save around the office, but business owners also can embrace some other ways to lower their office energy costs while benefitting the planet at the same time.

RELOCATING FOR A NEW JOB Rent your first home. The Allied survey found that 31 percent of respondents indicated the most challenging part of relocating for a job was finding a home, while 29 percent felt acclimating to their new community was the most challenging aspect of their relocation. Adults who rent their first homes upon relocating can remove some of the pressure to find the perfect home, knowing full well their first home in their new community will be temporary. If possible, rent in a location that makes it easy to immerse yourself in your new community, which should make the adjustment easier. In addition, place items that are unnecessary for day-to-day life in storage. Having some of your possessions already packed should make your next move less stressful.
