DID YOU KNOW? According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. This date marks the day the UN signed the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.

I am the smallest of my living species. I have the narrowest black stripes of any of my subspecies and I am also the darkest in orange compared to other subspecies. I weigh 260 lbs on average and grow up to 8ft long.

Why is World Wildlife Day important? We all share one planet. Ensuring Earth remains a thriving, living, breathing planet means taking care of everything in it. Overfishing can result in disastrous economic problems for coastal communities dependent on the trade. The loss of a species can lead to changes in the local environment, which can directly a ect the humans living there. Wildlife conservation is an integral part of creating a sustainable world.

Who am I?

I have a paler coat than most subspecies of my kind, and large, dark, widely spaced rosettes with thick, unbroken rings. They weigh 70-105 pounds. I have a thick coat that can grow as long as 7 centimeters in winter.

I am one of the world’s largest living primates. I have muscular arms, a massive chest, and broad hands and feet — and longer hair and shorter arms than my lowland cousins. My thick black hair helps insulate from cold weather.

I reach a shoulder height of between 6.6 and 10.5 ft, weigh between 4,400 and 8,800 lbs, and have 20 pairs of ribs. I typically have smaller tusks. My skin color is lighter than that of maximus and indicus with the least depigmentation.

You may think my skin is black, but it is dark gray or dark brown. I am 10.812.0 ft long and 1,760-3,080 lbs. I have a large head, short neck and short, thick legs. I also have a prehensile, pointed upper lip.

My habitat consists of the lowland rainforests and tropical, swamp, and mountain forests on the island of Borne. I have a round face with a dark red coat. I have strong hands and hand-like feet, along with flexible hips and long arms that allow me to live primarily in treetops.

When parents lose a child, that death may arouse a sense of injustice that can overwhelm the child’s parents as they contemplate lost potential, unfulfilled dreams and, in certain instances, the child’s suffering. Elderly individuals who lose a spouse may be overcome by feelings of loneliness. Recognition of these different reactions is important because it can help individuals and their support networks more effectively cope with their grief.

Wayland - Lorraine A. Dill, 94 years of age, passed away Saturday afternoon February 25, 2023 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.

Lorraine was born June 16,1928 in Rochester,the daughter of John and Edna (Brugger) Angie. She grew up in Rochester and also resided in Caledonia and for the majority of her life in Wayland. Lorraine was a 1946 graduate of Je erson High School in Rochester. She worked di erent jobs throughout her life with Kodak being where she worked the longest as an inspector, retiring in 1989.

Lorraine was a member of the Dansville Moose Lodge; the 8 and 40 branch of the American Legion; the Wayland American Legion Auxiliary and the Golden Agers. She enjoyed crocheting and making things out of plastic canvas. Lorraine also enjoyed playing Bingo in both Dansville and Rochester.

Lorraine was predeceased by her parents, John and Edna Angie; her husband, Gordon Dill; her siblings, Rose Van Vorst, John (Miriam) Angie; Betty Decoste and Gerald Angie. She is survived by her sons, Gilbert (Lorraine) Smith of Long Island, eodore Smith Jr. of Honeoye, Martha (Ted) Depalpe of RI, Michael (Vanessa) Smith of Honeoye, James (Jana) Lyons of KY and Barb (George) World of WY; her grandchildren,Marissa (Keith) McCord of Long Island,Kelly Smith of Long Island, Kimberly (Harry) Brewer of Bloom eld, eodore Brandon Smith of Honeoye, Darren (Courtney) Smith of MD, Heather Smith of GA, Craig Nelson of Honeoye; her 7 great-grandchildren; her sister, Edna Foster of Rochester; along with several nieces and nephews. Clicker Training Can Help Your Dog Love to Learn

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: What is the value of training dogs using a clicker? I have tried using a clicker to train my dog Atlas, but he didn’t listen very well. When should I click at him -- when he’s misbehaving? Or when he’s doing something right? And how can he tell? -- John H., Spring eld, Massachusetts

DEAR JOHN: Clicker training, or “mark and reward” training, can seem almost magical in terms of how quickly and enthusiastically a dog learns. But that magic only happens when it’s being done correctly.

Basically, you press the clicker device when your dog does precisely the thing that you are trying to train him to do. And you follow up immediately (like, within a second) with a reward -- usually a little bit of a treat. So, here’s how it is done:

-- Decide on one behavior that you want your dog to learn in your training session. Start with a basic behavior, like “sit,” “come here,” “lie down” or “give paw.”

-- Give Atlas the command. If he doesn’t follow the command, don’t click.

-- As soon as he follows the command, click once and give him a little treat.

AVOID INJURIES WHEN WORKING OUT

Be patient. Lifting too much weight or pushing yourself too hard on the treadmill, exercise bike or elliptical machine will increase your risk of injury. This is especially true for men and women working out for the first time or after lengthy stretches of inactivity. Men and women who are elderly, inactive and/ or overweight are likely to suffer from poor balance because their muscles are weak. Those muscles can be strengthened over time, but remain patient and stick to lightweightduringinitialworkouts so lack of balance does not lead to pain or injury. Take the same approach with aerobic exercise to prevent muscle strains and pulls. Increase weight and the intensity of cardiovascular exercises as muscles gradually strengthen and become accustomed to exercise.

There are different types of depression. A person may have a single bout of major depression or recurring episodes. Depression that lasts two or more years is called persistent depressive disorder. A less common type of depression is called manic-depressive illness. This involves cycles of depression that alternate with extreme highs, or manias.

Statins and Thiazides

Acutely Increase Blood Sugar, Risk of Diabetes

DEAR DR. ROACH: My question regards the results of my fasting glucose tests for the past couple of years. I am 81 and weigh around 150 pounds. The medications I am taking concern me, with relevance to the A1C levels of my quarterly blood work. My A1C levels have mostly been near mid-5%; the last showed 6%. Medications relevant to this that I am suspicious of are 100-12.5 mg of losartan/hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) and 20 mg of simvastatin. I have read that these medications can have an effect of raising blood glucose. My doctor is adamant that this does not exist, but it seems to me that there is a conflict on this. Should I perhaps ask him to change those medications because of my blood sugar? I am concerned about issues with the thiazide and the statin. -- P.R.

ANSWER: There isn’t a conflict. You are absolutely right that both simvastatin (like all statins) and HCTZ (like all thiazides) increase blood sugar and the risk of diabetes. The risk, however, is small. For thiazides, the risk of high blood sugar seems tied to potassium levels -- the lower the potassium, the higher the risk of diabetes. Interestingly, the losartan in combination with the HCTZ you are taking tend to raise potassium levels, so that combination may have a lower risk of worsening blood sugar levels than taking HCTZ alone. You are already taking the smallest effective dose of thiazide. The risk of statins seems greater in higher doses and with more potent statins, like atorvastatin and rosuvastatin; however, the risk is still small. About one person in 100 treated with a high-dose intensive statin, such as 40 mg of atorvastatin for five years, would be expected to get diabetes, while a dosage of 20 mg of simvastatin would be expected to have an even lower risk.

The conflict isn’t whether the increased risk exists (it does), but whether the treatments to prevent heart attack and stroke are worth the increased risk. For nearly all people, the benefit of keeping blood pressure and cholesterol under control greatly outweighs the small increased risk of diabetes. Given your normal A1C level, I would say your risk is low, and I do not generally recommend changing treatment based on your concern over blood sugar. ***

DID YOU KNOW? As more people work remotely, electricians and safety advocates are warning that various missteps may be putting people at unnecessary risk of fire and other unsafe conditions. Electrical equipment is necessary to run home offices just like it is traditional offices. Some people may find they have a shortage of electrical outlets to power their devices, and as a result they may turn to extension cords or power strips. While that may seem like an easy fix, it is easy to inadvertently overload outlets and circuits by connecting more than one power strip or extension cord together in a practice known as “daisy chaining.”

According to the U.S. Office of Compliance, using a daisy chain in the workplace violates the National Electrical Code as well as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s rules. While it may not break code at home, overloading any outlets increases risk for fire. The National Fire Protection Association indicates that more than 45,000 residential fires are started each year due to electrical failure and malfunction. Overload causes products to overheat, and that can spark fires in the power cords themselves or inside the wall where electrical lines are hidden.

“Shrink ation.” at’s a word that’s been in the news lately, and one that we need to pay attention to.

We know prices are increasing on our groceries. We see it every time we look at the price tags on the shelves when we shop, and certainly at the checkout. But shrink ation is a di erent thing and can be harder to spot. Shrink ation is sneaky price increases.

In shrink ation, the prices don’t go up, but what we get comes down. is is impacting most things across grocery stores, including dairy, shampoo, meats, frozen foods, toilet paper, pet food, pastries, candy bars, laundry detergent, sliced cheese, tea bags ... well, everything.

Example: e price of a can of beans stays the same, but we get fewer ounces. Example: e price of a loaf of bread stays the same, but it’s smaller. Same with cereal, which you’ll have noticed when the box sizes changed.

In my case, one particular item (frozen meatballs) at my local store dropped from 64 meatballs to 56 ... fewer for the same money.

Keep an eye on the unit pricing on the tag on the grocery store shelf. Yes, it’s in tiny print (which is one reason to carry a small magnifying glass at all times), but the numbers will tell you the unit price per uid ounce, pound or count. Over time you’ll be able to see if you’re getting less for your money.

Look at generics to save money (and, in many cases, get a better product) or just change brands. Buy more than one if the price is good, but watch the expiration dates.

Lastly, consider signing up for a store’s loyalty card if you get cash bene ts for doing so, and sign up for the emailed weekly sales yer to shop from.

By shopping carefully, we can beat them at their own game.

How clean is your street?

A big thumbs down to my neighbor who thinks it's his job to clean the street. Cleaning up debris in the street is good; dumping it in your neighbor’s yard, not so good. Now this is not trash. It is ice and snow buildup along the curb. It's not in anyone's way and it will melt. Now it's piled in my front yard along with all the dirt and stones that the plow has scraped up. It looks terrible and was totally unnecessary! Do you think when it melts he will come over and clean that up? No. So you're retired and bored, me too! The next time you feel the need to clean the street, please use your own yard as the dumping ground.

I moved out here a little over 10 years ago. I am so disappointed in how so many stores and restaurants are being built in the same parking lots. Like one in front of the other, looking like the big inner cities. Too many apartments now going up on every corner too. The bright lights in the store windows are awful and make it look like downtown pawn shops all along the main drag. Enough is enough, crime goes up and areas start to look like trash with all these businesses on top of each other. The rush hour is bad enough. The more you keep putting up here, the more traffic. Please leave some dignity to this town.

NOW HERE’S A TIP

* If you have a plastic-bristle broom that is starting to get really ragged and it’s time to replace it, don’t get rid of it. Turn it into a scrub broom. Trim the bristles down to about an inch. You can even cut them at an angle. Then you can use this broom to scrub stubborn spots. The bristles are nice and tight when they are so short.

* Check your windshield wiper blades. Are they smeary? Before you replace them, use a paper towel and rubbing alcohol to clean the blades. They might have life left in them yet!

* Still fire season in your neck of the woods? Most of us know not to burn magazine inserts or anything plastic, but did you know that you CAN add some spice to your fire? Save the peel from your citrus fruits (oranges, tangerines, grapefruit -- even lemons and limes) to add to your fire. They burn well, and they smell great!

Scrawled across plaques on living room walls or lling displays at design inspiration studios, this adage makes us feel all warm and cozy. We may envision stereotypes of colonial style architecture, contrasting shutters, maybe a picket fence and a walkway, the western nuclear family with its 2.5 children (whatever that means anyway), and we feel “at home.” Or if we don’t feel at home, we have been conditioned to think we should feel at home with such stereotypes.

Of course, families today come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and dynamics as rich as the sun is hot. No families are exactly the same, just as no individuals’ experiences are ever exactly the same (isn’t human experience intriguing?). However, I do think that just as families have no true set de nition, neither do homes necessarily t stereotypes, and instead exhibit even more diversity than the families dwelling within them.

Whatever the physical dwelling of a space we call a home, what makes something truly a “home?” I’ve been thinking about this de nition a lot lately. Some people have stable homes, some people have abusive homes. Some people have several places they call home. Some people have several groups of people and pets they call home. Who de nes the term “home?” Can it be the same for any of us?

As I percolated the concept of what the word “home” means to me and perhaps for the human experience, I surveyed friends and was interested to see but not entirely surprised with the similarities in de nitions. emes resoundingly focused on security, safety, unconditional love, favorite people, comfort, and acceptance (and one said, “Home is where the Air Force sends you,” which made me chuckle with my own military child background). Only a few people mentioned concrete, tangible “things” humans sometimes cling to.

I think a home’s tangible and intangible elements are inseparable but paradoxically entirely separate parts of the human “home.” Home is more than just the collection of physical “stu .” It is where the heart is, as the saying goes. It’s not the wood or brick of the structure; it is not even the physical décor, heirlooms, furnishings and such we bring into the home to give it a taste of our personalities. Instead, I think home is more a feeling, a state of being, and humans generally choose what and whom to include or welcome within our homes.

Home should be a safe haven, a comfort zone as many say. All should feel welcome to be themselves, free of judgment within their home space. At home, we can breathe deeply, inhale the beauty that is human experience and life on this earth we share, and let our true selves shine

through any walls we have otherwise erected for our public personas the rest of the world sees. I applaud those who are more transparent than I, but in general, people keep a lter up between our true selves and the public world, letting select few see our true selves.

Home is where we should feel safe to show all our idiosyncrasies without judgement. Home is where we let our hair down and nd acceptance for who we are and what we think and value. Home is where we celebrate the joys life o ers us that make the challenges less devastating.

Life challenges us all at times. Home is where we nd support, a listening ear, a comforting touch, even problem-solving companions. Home is where we learn to cooperate and coexist with others even when we want to pull our hair out because of trivial stu . Home is where we learn to forgive because most stress is trivial. Life is too short. We must remember what’s important in our home.

Home is where we return a er a day’s pursuits out in the world. It’s where we lay our hearts and souls to rest a er a long day of human judgment and stress. Home is and includes those we cherish. Home is making our friends the family we choose, or cherishing our family who remains our best friends through thick and thin.

Home should re ect who we are and what we want from life, not what someone else expects from us. Life and the world in general seem to harshly judge sometimes. Home should be an escape from that judgment, that persecution, away from eggshells or the apple cart. We should be at peace when we are home. We should be comfortable with who we are and what matters to us.

We may rede ne the meaning of home throughout life and it should not matter what anyone else thinks of our “home.”

We should make our home the place we want it to be, the place we keep our hearts. Treasure those in life who make life worth living. Li each other up and help each other. Let’s make the world we share a better “home” for all.

Preheat oven to 350 F. For crust, combine flour, powdered sugar and baking soda in a batter bowl. Add butter; mix until crumbly. Lightly press crumb mixture over bottom of stoneware bar pan; roll lightly. Bake 15 minutes; remove from oven to a cooling rack.

Meanwhile for filling, reserve 1 cup of the pecans for garnish; chop remaining pecans. Combine chopped pecans, brown sugar, eggs, butter, vanilla, and salt; mix well. Pour filling over warm crust, spreading to edges of pan. Arrange remaining pecan halves over filling. Bake 17 to 19 minutes, or until filling is set in center. Remove from oven; cool completely.

Sprinkle with additional powdered sugar, if desired. Cut into 32 squares using a utility knife; cut each square in half diagonally.
