PREPARING FOR A NIGHT OUT Know the dress code. Dress accordingly for the destination and planned activity. The dating and socializing resource Girls Chase advises that slim, black jeans can look classy on a night out. Footwear is important as well, especially if you will be doing some walking or dancing. Women who choose to wear heels may want to stash a foldable pair of flats in their handbags in the event they need some relief.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * A newly sworn-in Barack Obama visited the U.K. in 2009 and presented some rather curious gifts to the prime minister and queen: 25 DVDs to David Cameron, and an iPod Classic to the then-octogenarian Elizabeth II. Cameron returned the gesture with some “wellies” and Hobgoblin ale.

(formerly Ani). I was found outside in the winter snow when I was a tiny kitten. My “mom” adopted me through Lollypop Farm four years ago, and now I’m a beautiful, healthy, and happy cat. I love to play and am very inquisitive. I have to know what’s going on in every room of the house. I have a stuffed kitten toy that I love. I often carry her upstairs to the bedroom at night and bring her back down in the morning.

DID YOU KNOW? Thought they might be most often associated with dogs, ticks can affect cats as well. According to Blue Cross for Pets, cats are most likely to encounter ticks if they live near areas with lots of deer and sheep or in regions where other wildlife, such as hedgehogs and rabbits, are present. While ticks are active throughout the year, cats are most likely to encounter them between spring and autumn. That’s due in part to the climate during these seasons, which tends to be warmer and therefore more inviting to cats, compelling them to spend more time outdoors than they do in winter. Ticks, which are egg-shaped, are big enough to spot, so cat owners should conduct a careful examination of their cats’ fur each time they come into the house after spending time in the yard. Blue Cross for Pets notes that ticks feel like small bumps on a cat’s skin. Ticks are most likely to attach themselves to particular areas of a cat’s body. These areas include the head, neck, ears, and feet. Routine brushing, especially whenever cats come inside after time spent outdoors, can help cat owners spot and remove ticks from their cats. It’s important to recognize that indoor cats are not invulnerable to ticks, as other pets and humans can track ticks indoors. Periodic inspections and brushing of indoor cats’ can protect them from ticks and the diseases ticks carry.

191 Main St., Dansville, NY 14437 • 585-335-6170 Ways to Become More Active Every Day In addition to working toward at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week, it’s important to avoid being sedentary, when possible. You can do that by making choices that build activity in your day. Some examples include: • Taking the stairs • Printing to the printer farthest away from your desk at work • Getting off the bus or subway one stop early • Parking in the farthest space from the door • Walking around while you are on the phone or having walking meetings
DID YOU KNOW? The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that children and adolescents get 60 minutes or more of physical activity each day. The CDC advises that such physical activity should include aerobic activity and muscle and bone strengthening exercises. Aerobic activity should take up most of kids’ daily physical activities and can include moderate activities, such as brisk walking, or more intense activities like running. Parents should make sure kids include some vigorous aerobic activity in their physical activity routines at least three days per week. Muscle strengthening activities do not mean parents should get their youngsters in the gym as soon as possible. Rather, activities like gymnastics or pushups done three times per week can be enough to help kids build strong muscles. The CDC notes that as kids reach adolescence, they may start structured weighttraining programs to strengthen their muscles. Jumping rope or running three times per week can serve as kids’ bone-strengthening exercises.
INFLAMMATION Inflammation can affect anyone, and those who have battled it likely have nothing positive to say. But while few people may associate inflammation with something good, inflammation is actually a process by which the body’s white blood cells and the substances those cells produce protect the body from infection at the hands of bacteria, viruses and other foreign organisms. While inflammation is protective by nature, sometimes an inflammatory response is triggered by mistake. When that happens, the body’s immune system, which is designed to protect the body, begins to damage its own tissues. The resulting symptoms of this faulty immune system response may include joint pain, joint stiffness, loss of function in the joints, and swelling of the joints. None of those symptoms are comfortable, and people suffering from them may be on the lookout for ways to alleviate their pain and suffering. While anyone battling persistent inflammation should speak with their physicians to explore their treatment options, a preliminary search of how to best treat inflammation will no doubt turn up information about heat therapy and cold therapy. Treat Leg Swelling With Horse Chestnuts? ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 75-year-old male who
Lakeville 3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2

was diagnosed two years ago with superficial venous insufficiency. Venous ablation was considered, but my cardiologist informed me that it most likely would not improve my condition. Therefore, the best treatment is to wear compression socks and elevate my legs as much as possible. I am following my cardiologist’s advice. I recently read a recommendation to take horse chestnut seed extract (Aesculus hippocastanum) and to look for products that have had the toxic substance esculin removed. I discussed this with my cardiologist’s physician assistant, and she saw no reason not to try it. What do you think? -- M.P. ANSWER: Some years ago, I saw a well-done study showing that horse chestnut extract is an effective treatment for the swelling associated with venous insufficiency. The dose usually studied has been 300 mg of the extract, standardized to 50 mg of escin, twice daily. The side effects noted in studies have been both infrequent and mild, and I have had several patients try it. Unfortunately, my patients’ experiences have not been successful. I don’t know whether that was just bad luck that I had patients who didn’t respond, or whether they did not get an effective medication. One big problem with herbal treatments in the U.S., which are sold as dietary supplements, is that the purity and standardization cannot be guaranteed. They are not well regulated, as compared with pharmaceuticals. I am sure there are ethical manufacturers who follow good practices, but the literature on supplements in general has shown that some products for sale do not contain the amount of the substance they purport to. There is no brand I feel comfortable recommending. Nonetheless, I think it is reasonable to try, especially in combination with standard therapy, which includes compression stockings during the day and at least three sessions of raising the legs above the heart for 30 minutes at a time. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2022 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Don’t be afraid to use your RUBBER ERASER to design the coolest Easter eggs EVER!
Before the invention of rubber erasers, people used tablets made of wax to remove lead or charcoal marks from paper. Even materials such as sandstone and bread have historically been used to undo writings or scribbles. In 1770, Edward Nairne, an English engineer, went on to develop the first rubber eraser and sold it for three shillings per half-inch cube.

Siren We are so grateful to our first responders and their selfless service. Our community is greatly indebted for their sacrifices. Our question in no way reflects on their service.
S E V RA Congratulations! Congratulations to the Village of Lima for earning the top Clean Energy award (one of only two in the Finger Lakes Region, the other being Canandaigua)! Not only can these clean energy achievements save village residents money, but the changes will also benefit the environment, helping to move the country into a sustainable future. I believe this was accomplished through bi-partisan efforts of the village board, which shows that beneficial things can happen when people work together. I hope other towns will be encouraged to do the same. Grateful A sincere “Thank you” to the gentleman who helped my 88-year-old husband when he fell in the Dansville Franklin Plaza Parking lot on Friday, April 8th. Your kindness was so very much appreciated. May God bless you abundantly. - His Grateful Wife & Family Honest People Thank you so much to the Geneseo Wal-Mart employee who turned my purse in at Customer Service. It had been a long and busy day. I left it in my cart without even noticing and was panicked at not finding it when I arrived home. Your honesty was a breath of fresh air. God bless you! Riga Rec Easter Egg Parade On Saturday, April 9th, Riga Recreation held its annual Easter Egg Hunt. It looked a bit different this year as a parade was held instead. The egg hunters met at the Churchville Commons and, led by the Easter Bunny, went up Main Street to Buffalo Road before they proceeded to the Village of Churchville’s Steedman Gazebo. They were then given Goodie Bags, could get an airbrush tattoo, and could guess how many jelly beans were in a gigantic water bottle. Huge thanks to: Churchville Lions and LEO clubs, Arlene’s Costumes, the Village of Churchville, Town of Riga, Sue, Lily, and Addison (stuffing Easter eggs!) and, of course, the Easter Bunny! - David Thomas, Supervisor of Recreation GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

We live near the local town fire station. The siren is still activated and blows on average of 10 times each month. It seems that in this day and age of digital devices to be unnecessary noise pollution. We understand that firefighters and police receive alert messages on their phones or devices. The siren can only be heard in the neighborhood of the fire station and no longer serves a purpose. The siren is extremely loud, disturbing neighbors, sleeping babies, animals, and patrons eating at a nextdoor restaurant. It is especially disturbing to those with hearing aids, auditory sensitivity and other medical disorders such as those on the autism spectrum. To some, it is physically painful. Please consider shutting this down. Dear Shopping Fear, While it is sad that you didn’t feel safe enough to speak up when you witnessed something that was wrong, you are focused on the wrong issues. Perhaps instead of focusing on your fear of fellow citizens, you should ask why they needed to steal? Perhaps the cashier decided to keep quiet because she works a full-time job and still can barely afford to feed her family? Between inflation and stagnant wages, the ability to cover basic needs has become impossible for some fellow citizens. On the other end of the spectrum, there are business owners with steadily rising overhead and restrictions that are making it hard to justify remaining in business. Instead of allowing your fear to paralyze you and complaining, perhaps it’s time to pick a side: report the people stealing or ask if you can help cover their tab. Either one of these actions could have a potential ripple effect of positive change in your community.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.
INNOVATIVE SCHOOL IS A TRAINING GROUND FOR ARTISTS (NAPSI)—Art classes have slowly but steadily all but disappeared from public schools over the years. Lack of funding has been the culprit, but educators tend to agree that the arts play a crucial role in the academic and creative development of our children. One public school in Greenville, South Carolina is embracing a different model and provides a haven for young artists from across the state to discover, develop and hone their talents. The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities offers preprofessional training to its students in the areas of creative writing, dance, drama, music, and visual arts. As a public, residential high school serving juniors and seniors, it helps students refine their talents in a master-apprentice community while receiving nationally recognized academic education. The Governor’s School also serves as a resource to all teachers and students in South Carolina, offering comprehensive outreach programs designed to bring together artists, educators, community organizations, and schools. The school is supported by its own foundation—The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities Foundation—by raising revenues to bridge the gap between funds provided to the school through government appropriation and the actual cost of the educational opportunities the school provides to its students. This extraordinary school recently captured the attention of Ovation TV, a cable and digital channel that is dedicated to the arts. Ovation and local cable provider Spectrum acknowledged the school’s contributions to the community and innovative approach to arts education and skills development with a $10,000 award via its Stand for the Arts arts advocacy initiative. SC Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities’ success provides a great lesson for communities across the country looking to support the arts and encourage the creative development of their youth. Reborn Find a Fresh Start this Easter BY AMANDA DUDEK
I
f grocery store shelves are any indication, Easter is here once again. After two pandemic Easters, it is hard not to feel a bit apprehensive at the prospect of a more “normal” holiday. Yet, despite lingering concerns, I believe many of you, like me, are doing your best to prepare for celebration and time together with friends and family. In many ways, new beginnings are what Easter is all about: new life and renewal. Even nature presents a spring slate wiped clean by winter. Still, starting fresh can be hard, especially after negative events and experiences in our lives. The past two years have brought isolation, unexpected loss, and general upheaval. It will take courage, hope, and a heaping dose of optimism to both recover from the last two years and to leave fear in the past, reborn with perhaps a heightened appreciation of everyone and everything we love most.
Struggling to enjoy this festive season? Try these 9 tips! • Recognize healing can’t be rushed. Give yourself time to adjust, noting that it will take time before a sense of safety and security returns. It could be a while before you feel like yourself again, and that’s not only acceptable, but normal. • Ask for help. The pandemic was proof that it’s impossible to go it alone through difficult situations. Don’t hesitate to rely on loved ones as you recover. The MHA notes that social support is crucial when healing from trauma and touts the value of sharing one’s story. Such sharing enables individuals to process their thoughts and feelings. • Embrace healthy behaviors. During the pandemic, many individuals, even those devoted to healthy living prior to 2020, found it difficult to continue engaging in behaviors and activities that promoted their overall health. Embracing these behaviors, which can include eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly and getting sufficient sleep, improves individuals’ ability to cope with stress. Re-establish old routines to restore a sense of structure to daily life that might have gone missing over the last two years.
• Seek professional health care help if necessary. Putting in the work but still struggling? Contact a health care professional. Hundreds of millions of people across the globe have had to confront issues affecting their mental health during the past two years, and health care professionals are prepared and ready to help individuals overcome those issues as the world returns to normalcy. • Dealing with loss? Discuss the death of your loved one. The American Psychological Association (APA) notes that avoiding talking about a deceased loved one can lead to isolation and a disruption in the healing process. Speaking about the death of a loved one can help you understand what happened, and that understanding can facilitate the healing process. • Accept your feelings. The APA notes that it’s normal for grieving individuals to experience a range of emotions, including sadness, anger, and exhaustion. Consider speaking with a licensed mental health professional. Such professionals can recommend various strategies to cope with emotions that can sometimes feel overwhelming. • Celebrate your loved one. The APA recognizes that many people find the anniversaries of a loved one’s death to be especially difficult. The APA recommends individuals use such anniversaries as opportunities to celebrate their loved one’s life. Plant a garden in a loved one’s memory or honor them with a donation to a charity they supported. Such gestures can add some positivity to the anniversary and help in the healing process. • Take part in an activity that meant something to you and your deceased loved one. Doing something in memory of a loved one can help people cope. For example, plant flowers in honor of a deceased parent with whom you shared a love of gardening.
Have a safe, happy, and healthy Easter!

SEAMLESS GUTTERS Make the most of mulching Lawns and gardens can often benefit from the laying of mulch. Mulch serves various purposes in lawns and gardens, and many experienced lawn and garden enthusiasts lay mulch to ensure their properties make it through spring, summer and fall unscathed. First-time homeowners with little or no landscaping experience may not understand the benefits of mulch, which can be used to strengthen soil and protect properties from the elements. BRAIN-HEALTHY HABITS TO EMBRACE Cognitive decline is a condition that is often associated with aging, but even middle-aged people can experience memory loss or cognition issues. The Alzheimer’s Association says that more than five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. By 2050, that number could rise to as high as 16 million people. More than 747,000 Canadians are living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, says the Canadian Alzheimer’s Association. Although there is no definitive way to prevent dementia, living a long, vibrant life may be possible by encouraging some healthy habits for the brain. It is never too late or too early to begin health and lifestyle changes. Exercise: Becoming more active can improve brain volume, reduce risk for dementia and improve thinking and memory skills. The journal Neurology found that older people who vigorously exercise performed better on cognitive tests than others of the same age, placing them at the equivalent of 10 years younger. Increased blood flow that occurs with physical activity may help generate new neurons in the hippocampus, an area of the brain involved with learning and memory. The Harvard Medical School says aerobic exercise may help improve brain tissue by improving blood flow and reducing the chances of injury to the brain from cholesterol buildup in blood vessels. Quit smoking: The Alzheimer’s Association indicates that evidence shows smoking increases the risk of cognitive decline. Smoking can impair blood flow to the brain and cause small strokes that may damage blood vessels. Eat healthy foods: Foods that are good for the heart and blood vessels also are good for the brain. These include fresh fruits and vegetables, GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

whole grains, fish-based proteins, unsaturated fats, and foods containing omega-3 fatty acids. Neurologists state that, while research on diet and cognitive function is limited, diets, such as Mediterranean and Mediterranean-DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), may contribute to a lower risk of cognitive issues. Consume caffeine: Caffeine may help boost memory performance and brain health. A Journal of Nutrition study found people ages 70 and older who consumed more caffeine scored better on tests of mental function than those who consumed less caffeine. Caffeine may help improve attention span, cognitive function and feelings of well-being. Information from Psychology Today also indicates caffeine may help in the storage of dopamine, which can reduce feelings of depression and anxiety. In addition, compounds in cocoa and coffee beans may improve vascular health and help repair cellular damage due to high antioxidant levels. Work the brain: Engaging in mentally stimulating activities can create new brain connections and more backup circuits, states Dr. Joel Salinas, a neurologist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. Working the brain through puzzles, reading and participating in social situations can stimulate the release of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a molecule essential for repairing brain cells and creating connections between them. A good way to combine these lifestyle factors is to take an exercise class with friends, mixing the social, stimulation and exercise recommendations together. Cognitive decline can come with aging, but through healthy habits, people can reduce their risk of memory loss and dementia.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES THAT ARE PERFECT FOR SENIORS Water aerobics: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that waterbased exercises can be especially helpful individuals with chronic diseases, a category many seniors fall into. The CDC notes that one study published in the journal Arthritis & Rheumatology found that improves the use of joints affected by arthritis without worsening symptoms. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services also notes that swimming can lead to improved health for people with diabetes and heart disease. Seniors can reap these benefits by going for a dip in their own backyard pools or a local body of water, such as a lake or ocean. Many swim clubs also offer discounted memberships to seniors, making these another great and affordable way to reap the benefits of swimming. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

DID YOU KNOW? Once a term that dominated newspaper headlines and environmental discourse, “global warming” is now heard far less frequently. Many may assume global warming has been rebranded as “climate change,” but the two are not one and the same. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, global warming refers exclusively to the Earth’s rising surface temperature, while climate change includes global warming but also its side effects. Such side effects include the melting of the world’s glaciers and the growing frequency of drought and heavier rainstorms. Global warming is also used most often to refer to warming caused by humans, while climate change is a term used when discussing environmental changes that are human-caused or natural. 3rd Article In A Centennial Series PAW’S CORNER
PAST
By Sam Mazzotta
Social Media a Bad Idea When Rehoming Pets DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read about Sherrie’s dilemma in trying to rehome her grandmother’s cats. Should she maybe put a notice on Facebook that the cats need a good home? -Gerry O., via email DEAR GERRY: On the surface, it seems like a good idea. But there are some dangers involved in rehoming cats using these routes. In fact, many publications and some social media sites -- most notably, Facebook -- do not allow posts about pets being available for free or for sale. The danger for pets is that they could go to a home that’s not going to meet their needs, where they may be abused. They may not even go to a home -dogs, puppies and even kittens have been obtained this way by promoters of illegal dog fights, or by others with bad intentions, where they meet a terrible end. For humans, the danger with rehoming via the internet is that the person they’re meeting may be setting them up as a target. Whether to rob them directly or initiate a con job to get even more money out of them, the danger is real. The best ways for Sherrie to get the word out about needing to rehome the cats is to talk directly to friends and relatives, let the veterinarian know and contact the local shelter. More information can be found by searching for “rehoming your pet” at the national Humane Society website (www.humanesociety.org). Send your questions, tips and comments to ask@pawscorner. com. This month we are recognizing our eldest and longest standing member for 71 years, William “Bill” Kelly, Jr. Bill graduated from Cornell University in 1943 followed by joining the US Army. His unit was deployed in 1944 to Bastogne, Belgium. During the Battle of the Bulge, Lt. Kelly served as a forward artillery observer with the 11th Armored Division of the 3rd Army. At the end of the war, he was assigned to lead forty men to guard a salt mine in Altaussee, Austria. Bill and Monuments Man George Stout entered the mine and discovered large underground chambers holding 6,600 priceless paintings, 140 sculptures, and many other artifacts that were looted from museums, churches and private homes by the Germans. This event was what the film The Monuments Men was based on. The 2014 film starred George Clooney, Matt Damon, Bill Murray & John Goodman. When Bill was discharged, he returned to Dansville where he joined the family business, Kelly Brothers Nurseries, founded in 1880. Bill was active in the community not only as a businessman but also as a longstanding member of the Dansville Rotary Club. Bill held the Office of Club President from 1958 to 1959. Bill continued to attend meetings until his passing in 2018 at 97 years old. Read more and watch video at: https://www.democratandchronicle.com/videos/ news/2014/03/07/6182815/

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles COVID Phone Scams Thieves and scammers will do nearly anything to help us part with our dollars. In the latest one, as I write this, the thieves want to help me get the free COVID tests the government is sending out. I signed up months ago and received my shipment of four tests. The scammers, however, think I should have more on hand and have offered to help me order them ... for a small handling fee. That handling fee for the free tests? Thirty dollars, and giving them my banking information. No, I don’t think so. We need to be on our toes with these thieves. No matter what topic is on the news, they’ll find a way to turn it into a scam. You might get a call supposedly from a COVID contact tracer who asks too many personal questions, such as for your banking information. You might get a call saying we’re now supposed to get an additional booster and you can be put at the head of the wait list for a small fee. Or you might get a call saying you’re due to get another government relief check, but you have to pay the taxes first out of your checking account. Why, oh why do they target seniors? The answer is that we are perceived to have lots of money and that we’re not likely to report fraud. We’re also, unfortunately, too trusting and too polite. If you don’t recognize the phone number when someone calls, don’t answer. If someone hasn’t left a message, don’t call them back. If someone does get you on the phone and the conversation involves any pressure, time-limited offers or questions about your personal information, hang up. Remember, you are not obligated to be polite! (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

DID YOU KNOW? Without pollinators, more than 100 crops grown in the United States would not be able to thrive. Plants, including various fruits, vegetables, nuts and more, rely on pollinators to ensure to transport pollen. Though many plants are self-pollinating and others are pollinated by the wind or water, many others rely on insects and animals to become pollinated. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says birds, bees, bats, butterflies, moths, flies, beetles, and small mammals all can work as pollinators. Examples of crops pollinated by pollinators include apples, squash and almonds. Animals and insects help pollinate more than 75 percent of the world’s flowering plants, and nearly 75 percent of all crops, according to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Unfortunately, pesticide use can diminish the number of natural pollinators. Natural gardening and pest-control can help protect the habitats of pollinators.

(585) 728-2100 General eulogy preparation tips: * Eulogies are for the living, and for everyone at a remembrance service. * Be brief. People listen for three to five minutes. After five minutes, people stop listening. * Do a bit of research. Talk to others. What are some childhood memories? Was there a favorite lesson learned? Was there a favorite quote or an inspiring song? What was the deceased like at work? What were some favorite accomplishments? * Write out the eulogy. Even if you are an experienced speaker, during the emotional time of a rememberance service it is especially easy to wander. * Write and speak from the heart. Be yourself. * Practice the eulogy. Time it. Rehearse in front of an audience (one or two people). Listen to their feedback. Edit. Practice again. * Have a back-up plan. In case you are unable to begin or finish, have someone else prepared to deliver the eulogy for you.

MAKE EASTER EGGS LAST
HOW SMALL BUSINESSES CAN MAKE THE MOST OF LOCAL MARKETS Don’t overdo it: A cluttered stall at a festival or marketplace may make it difficult for consumers to browse or find what they’re looking for. NFIB® advises business owners to fill the space without it making it appear cluttered. Keep extra inventory on hand to restock displays as sales are made throughout the day.
Families gather on Easter to participate in many different traditions that have been passed down through time. One such tradition is coloring Easter eggs. Millions of eggs are harvested and sold this time of year to be included in Easter festivities. However, soon after egg hunts have been completed and family dinners are brought to the table, those colored eggs may be relegated to the trash. When colored with foodgrade dyes, such as those manufactured and readily available around Easter, the eggs remain safe to eat. Colored eggs that are stored in a refrigerator can last up to a week if their shells remain intact. Peeled eggs may last up to five days, says the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service. Once eggs are boiled and dyed, they should be promptly put into the refrigerator to keep them fresh and edible. It’s adviseable to use plastic, wood or papier-mâché eggs for Easter egg hunts, as eggs made of such materials will not spoil. Otherwise, hide and refrigerate hardboiled eggs if this task can be completed within two hours. After that time frame, the eggs have the potential to spoil. By eating colored eggs, you can reduce waste and add a tasty appetizer to Easter meals.

* Spread a teaspoon of peanut butter thinly on a paper plate. Then when the dog is busy with its treat, you can trim its nails. Or sometimes just having it nearby as a promised treat can do the trick to distract your pet. Good luck! * “One of the things I do each spring (and fall) is to go through my makeup and toss the old items. I also restock my first-aid kit and get new bottles of sunscreen and bug spray to keep in my car kit, so I will always have it around.” -- E.A. in California * Love beans but trying to save a little money? Don’t be intimidated by dry beans; just rinse them and chuck them in the slow cooker. Add water according to package directions and cook on low for up to eight hours. After they cool, you can bag them in freezer-safe, zipper-top bags and freeze them for easy use later. * “On a health kick: Step one is to keep a food and activity diary for a week. You can get an idea of what you eat, what times of the day you are overeating and the areas where you can make improvements. Knowledge is power!” -- V.R. in Oregon * J.D. of Massachusetts writes: Mix 1/2 cup vinegar and a chamomile tea bag in a pan of medium hot water. Let cool slightly and soak feet for up to 10 minutes. WORKING PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE Request changes to work schedules. While technology may have largely eliminated the separation between the office and home, working parents can use that to their advantage by asking their employees to alter their work schedules. Telecommuting one or two days a week can help parents feel more connected to their families, while flex schedules can ensure working parents don’t miss any of their children’s dance recitals or weekday afternoon ballgames.

EFFICIENCY AT WORK Information is now seemingly always at our fingertips thanks to mobile devices like smartphones and tablets. While these devices may theoretically allow workers to become more productive, research suggests otherwise. Professor, researcher and author Gloria Mark with the University of California, Irvine says that activity switching and being frequently interrupted, including self-interruptions like checking social media and email, can lead people to develop short attention spans. That inability to focus for extended periods of time can adversely affect efficiency.
DID YOU KNOW? How households earn their income has changed dramatically over the last several decades. According to a Pew Research Centeral analysis of the Decennial Census and American Community Surveys integrated Public Use Microdata Sample files, in 1960 only fathers worked in 70 percent of American households. That figure has dropped in each ensuing decade and by 2012 fathers were the sole earners in just 31 percent of American households. While one in four households in American were dual income households in 1960, by 2012 that figure had risen to 60 percent. While those figures represent dramatic changes, the number of households in which mothers are the sole earners has not changed all that much since 1960. In 1960, mothers were the sole earners in just 2 percent of American households. Fifty-two years later 6 percent of American households featured mothers as the sole earners. EMPLOYMENT
