Does Your Family Have a Fire Escape Plan? (Family Features) When a home fire occurs, you have very little time to get out. A working smoke alarm doubles your chances of survival, yet more than twenty percent of American homes are without them. Energizer and the International Association of Fire Chiefs teamed up to address this problem by providing vital fire safety information to families. Make a Plan Installing smoke alarms on every level of the home and developing a plan of escape can give your family precious minutes to get out and get to safety. Draw a floor plan of your home and sketch exit routes out of every room. Make sure you have a fire escape ladder long enough to reach the ground from upstairs rooms. Assign an outside meeting place, so you can quickly locate each other

Poetry features
I love the feature interview with local poets in the Hometown Stories. It seems no one knows about the poets and writers around here, but we really have a lot of quality writers and writer groups in the greater Rochester area. I hope this helps people get out there and enjoy the culture we really have a lot of around here. Happy national poetry month, everyone!
The Kindness of Strangers
Checking out from grocery shopping Saturday, I was $4.00 short. I began searching in my cart for an item to return. Then the cashier said, "All Set." Feeling dumbfounded I looked up at her. She said the couple behind me paid the remainder. The husband said he'd been in my situation before, so they paid the $4.00 I owed. I thanked them, while still feeling stunned. Bless Your Kind Hearts.
Thank You Brockport Emergency Responders
On March 25th when high winds and rain were buffeting our area, a maple tree smashed through our roof. Unsure how to proceed, we called 911, and the immediate response from local agencies was exemplary. We would like to sincerely thank the Brockport Fire Dept., the Brockport Police Dept., and the Brockport Code Enforcement Office. Their quick assessment of the damage and instruction on what needed to happen saved us much further damage and allowed us to move forward.
We were then able to locate an arborist to remove the tree and a contractor to brace and tarp the opening. A sincere thanks to Lusk Tree Service and Emergency Enclosures Inc. for responding on short notice and each doing such a careful and thorough job. The Alvitos
Many times while driving you will see highway signs such as Stop signs or Hospital signs blocked by low hanging branches or bushes that have grown larger. Or you may see weeds that have grown up at intersections, making it hard to see traffic to the left and right. Highway department employees - make a concerted effort to see these impediments. Sitting high in your trucks may not give you the same visibility issues that a car would encounter.
Shoppers
If vehicles at shopping centers are required to stop at cross walks why don’t shoppers use them? How about those pushing their carts down the middle of the parking aisles. You’re putting yourself at risk by doing this. Don’t blame the driver if you’re in the wrong.
Ungrateful Wedding Couples
What is with some of the younger generation of wedding couples and newlyweds? Whether it is a family member, friend or coworker - you get invited to their wedding, you attend and/or send a generous gift, then nothing! No verbal or written thank you, no tweet or message of thanks. They are quick to cash your check but with no appreciation or acknowledgement sent! This is so rude, inconsiderate and lazy! What a bad example for the younger generation of couples that do!

* Keep a small wastepaper basket or shredder near your entrance if possible. You can get rid of paper items you don’t need (think, junk mail) before it even makes it into the house. This is especially important if you tend to let things pile up, like I do! -- R.F. in Louisiana
* For scratch paper, I use the back side of my kids’ extra art pages. We choose the best to display, then they chop up the rest into small booklets, which they staple at the top. And we have notepads! -- M.L. in Iowa
* Keep a map or globe in your family or TV room. This way, when a place is mentioned on the news or in another program, you can find it on the map. This is a great thing to do with kids, but it’s handy and worthwhile for anyone. -- via email
* If you have a very stinky trash can, scrub it with a paste made from baking soda and just a bit of water. It works as a mild abrasive. Then fill a spray bottle with plain white vinegar and spray. It should foam for a moment. Let it sit for about 10 minutes, then rinse well with hot water. Clean and deodorized!
* We have large buckets that store random toys on our back porch. It seems that whenever we’d touch the buckets to get a toy, a horde of mosquitoes would erupt. There’s no water, so we didn’t know what to do. And we didn’t want to douse it with chemicals, as it’s filled with kid stuff. A neighbor suggested we put a few dryer sheets in each one, and they really have worked. I guess the bugs don’t like the smell!

Is AARP Membership Worth Having?
I remember feeling uneasy when the rst AARP envelope showed up in my mailbox. It was one thing to quietly hit the Big Five-O, and it was another thing to realize that I was then eligible for membership in a group for seniors.
It took a little while, but I did sign up. Over the years I’ve stayed. e benets are worth it. Here are a few:
I get a discount on my cellphone plan for having an AARP membership.
e list of bene ts and discounts keeps growing, many of them local. Rental cars and travel, insurance of all kinds, owers and groceries, transmissions and tires, paint ... and pizza.
ere’s the Smart Driver online safety course that, once you pass it, could save you money on your auto insurance.
e monthly newspaper, the AARP Bulletin, is worth reading for the information it contains: money, investing, senior news and events in my state, government a airs, Social Security and health. en there’s the bi-monthly AARP magazine, with a wide variety of articles, from dieting and money management to tests that predict cancer, places to retire and much more.
e two publications are worth the $16 price of membership by themselves because of the information they present.
AARP has an app now with good instructions on how to install it.
If you sign up for AARP membership (the rst year is reduced to $12), it will likely take a few months for your publications to start up. If you change your address, the same thing might happen, depending on where in the publishing cycle your change occurs. If you suspect something has gone astray, call them at 888-687-2277. Meanwhile, you can read both of them online at the AARP website: aarp.org.
What interests me the most today is the 25% o discount on a rst order from Silver Cuisine by bistroMD, especially the low sodium meals.

NOTICE OF INTENT TO REQUEST RELEASE OF FUNDS (NOIRROF)
April 21, 2023
New York State Homes & Community Renewal (HCR)
38-40 State Street
Albany, New York 12207
(518) 474-6677
On or a er May 1, 2023, New York State Homes & Community Renewal (HCR) will submit a request to the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for the release of $600,000 of HOME funds under Title II of the Cranston-Gonzalez National A ordable Housing Act (NAHA) of 1990, in accordance with section 288 (42 U.S.C. 12838), to authorize Bishop Sheen Ecumenical Housing Foundation, Inc. to undertake a program known as Sheen Housing 2022 HOME, for purposes of providing funds for the cost of the rehabilitation of 24 single-family homes on scattered sites in Allegany, Cayuga, Chemung, Livingston, Ontario, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Tioga, Tompkins, Wayne, Yates Counties, NY with an estimated total project cost of $710,000.
e 2022 HOME LPA Program will use HOME funds from 2022 awards to fund a variety of activities through partnerships with counties, municipalities and non-pro t community-based housing organizations, which are referred to as Local Program Administrators (LPA). Each LPA works within a speci c geographic area – usually a county or municipality.
e Program provides funds to acquire, rehabilitate or construct housing or to provide assistance to low- and moderate-income home-buyers and renters. Funds must be distributed in accordance with needs and priorities identi ed in the State’s Consolidated Plan.
e proposed activities that are the subject of this Notice are Categorically Excluded from National Environmental Policy Act requirements under HUD regulations at 24 CFR Part 58(a)(3)(i). e speci c LPA Programs that are the subject of this Notice do not constitute every LPA Program that is proposed for inclusion within the 2022 New York State HOME LPA Program. A full listing of the 2022 HOME LPA Programs is available at http://www.hcr.ny.gov/Funding/ Awards/.
is is the rst tier of review in a 2-tiered process. e speci c addresses of homes are not known at this time because the participating property owner identi cation process is ongoing. erefore, under 24 CFR Part 58.15 (Tiering) and 24 CFR Part 58.32 (Project Aggregation), HCR will use a tiered approach and Tier 2 site speci c reviews will be completed for those laws and authorities not addressed in the Tier 1 broad review for each address under this program when addresses become known. No physical work will begin on properties until all levels of environmental review are complete and found to be in compliance. Tier 1 review addresses speci c environmental factors for which compliance has been documented, regardless of speci c site locations. It prevents repeating the same compliance factors on a Tier 2 site-speci c basis, once all participating homeowners are known.
An Environmental Review Record (ERR) that documents the environmental determinations for this Program is available and may be obtained by emailing
John.leahy@hcr.ny.gov.
Tier 2 Site Speci c Review: e site speci c reviews will cover all the laws and authorities not resolved in the broad Tier 1 review as discussed in the ERR that is available for public inspection.
Mitigation Measures/Conditions/Permits (if any): Template Tier 2 forms are included in the ERR that is available for public inspection. e Templates include the mitigation measures, conditions and/or permits that will be complied with, if applicable, at each project site that is chosen.
PUBLIC COMMENTS
Any individual, group, or agency may submit written comments on the ERR(s) to John Leahy, Environmental Analysis Unit, NYS Homes & Community Renewal, 38-40 State Street, Albany, New York, 12207 via email at John.leahy@hcr. ny.gov. Please note to which LPA your comment pertains in your correspondence. All comments received by April 28, 2023 will be considered by HCR prior to authorizing submission of a request for release of funds.
ENVIRONMENTAL CERTIFICATION
HCR certi es to HUD that Mr. John Leahy in his capacity as Certifying O cer consents to accept the jurisdiction of the Federal Courts if an action is brought to enforce responsibilities in relation to the environmental review process and that these responsibilities have been satis ed. HUD’s approval of the certi cation satis es its responsibilities under NEPA and related laws and authorities, and allows the applicable LPA to use Program funds.
OBJECTIONS TO RELEASE OF FUNDS
HUD will consider objections to its release of funds and HCR’s certi cation received by May 16, 2023 or for a period of een days following its actual receipt of the request (whichever is later) only if they are on one of the following bases:
(a) the certi cation was not executed by the Certifying O cer of HCR; (b) HCR has omitted a step or failed to make a decision or nding required by HUD regulations at 24 CFR Part 58; (c) the grant recipient or other participants in the project have committed funds or incurred costs not authorized by 24 CFR Part 58 before approval of a release of funds by HUD; or (d) another Federal agency acting pursuant to 40 CFR Part 1504 has submitted a written nding that the project is unsatisfactory from the standpoint of environmental quality. Objections must be prepared and submitted in accordance with the required procedures (24 CFR Part 58) and shall be addressed to the following HUD o ce and sent via email.

Dish Soap For The Grubs
As your lawn starts its spring growth, watch for brown patches that never turn green. Dead patches could be caused by grubs feeding on the roots in the fall. Dig up square-foot sections of sod to a depth of about two inches in several areas in your yard. Next, examine the soil for short, fat, whitish Cshaped worms. If you find 10 or more grubs per square foot you should treat your lawn. To treat 1,000 square feet of grass, dilute two tablespoons of liquid dish soap in a gallon of water and spray it on the lawn, preferably immediately after a rainfall. This will cause the grubs to come to the surface, where you can collect them if the birds don’t do the job for you. Repeat the treatment weekly until the grubs stop surfacing.

Can Cats Eat Easter Eggs?
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We were coloring Easter eggs a few days ago, and our cat Jake kept begging underneath the table. Now that we’ve got lots of le over boiled eggs, I’m wondering if it would be safe to mix a few into his food? -- Sarah L., Panama City, Florida
Dear Sarah: Because they’re hardboiled, it’s completely safe to feed some egg to Jake. Just remember to peel the shell o rst!
Eggs are a healthy protein that cats can eat. e American Veterinary Medical Association recommends that they always be cooked. Feeding raw egg to a cat can make it sick due to the potential for bacteria or other pathogens that are on the shell to transfer to the egg.
Whether the cooked egg is boiled, scrambled, poached or microwaved doesn’t matter. Don’t add seasonings to the egg, though. Salt, pepper and other spices can upset a cat’s small tummy.
If you’ve never fed eggs to Jake before, only give him a small amount at rst. Add a teaspoon to his regular food or to the side of his dish. Monitor his behavior a er he eats the egg. If he has an allergy to eggs, he may scratch excessively, act agitated or throw up. If he seems ne, you can give him more next time.
Here’s a cool nding about eggs and cats: Researchers at Purina reported in 2019 that coating a cat’s food in a special egg powder formulation helped stop people from having an allergic reaction to cats! A protein in cats’ saliva is responsible for 95% of cat allergies in people. Not surprisingly, Purina has developed an entire product line of cat food based on this nding, called LiveClear. So, if you su er from allergies around cats, this might bring some relief.

ONLY RAIN DOWN THE DRAIN: WATER CONSERVATION EDUCATION BENEFITS US ALL
BY SUZIE WELLS
Around Rochester, we o en don’t think about groundwater. Most of us have potable liquid gold coming out of our taps any time we want it. Some choose to lter that water, which is even better according to many research sources, but otherwise, most don’t need to worry about water safety. We don’t usually have contamination issues or drought issues as we see in the news elsewhere in the nation or around the world. O en, we don’t think about groundwater unless something goes wrong.
However, even if we don’t have daily water issues here, groundwater issues across the world a ect us, due to our international food sources and the consequent safety of products coming from countries or regions with such issues. According to the World Health Organization’s World Water Day report, “groundwater provides half of all water used by households worldwide, a quarter of all the water drawn for irrigated agriculture, and one third of the water supply required for industry.”
Simple Ways We Can All Conserve Water and Improve Our Ecosystem:
• Shorten showers, use low- ow, high-e ciency toilets, x leaky faucets, and turn o faucets when not in use (remember the age-old tip to turn o water when brushing your teeth).
• Keep the water going down the drain clean: Never ush medicine down the toilet or sink. Repair vehicle leaks to avoid oil or other waste from entering storm drains, etc.
• Reduce, reuse, and then e ectively recycle plastics. 10,000 tons of plastic end up in the Great Lakes each year. Plastic gets into the lakes from litter, stormwater runo , wastewater treatment plants, and runo from farms. Microplastics have been detected in water around the world, including our nearby streams, rivers, lakes, and oceans. In these waterways, microplastics end up in the water we drink and the seafood we eat.
• Dispose of pet waste appropriately. 15-20% of bacteria in the waterways comes from pet waste. Bacteria and nutrients in pet waste o en wash by rainwater or snowmelt into storm drains, streams, ponds, and lakes. at bacteria o en contains nutrients that promote weed and algae growth.
Many organizations across the nation and world strive to improve sanitation in hard-hit areas, but we are all part of a human population that needs to work together if we want a chance to turn back the sands of this ominous climate crisis. Supporting such organizations bene ts the collective human population.
What can we do locally? Some (many) people around Rochester criticize Genesee River’s abysmal water quality. Many complain about algae blooms that close swimming areas along Lake Ontario. Everyone seems to complain when water quality impairs recreational happiness, but many or most don’t realize that pollution is primarily caused by our own waste and inconsiderate, perhaps ignorant, everyday choices.
e Water Education Collaborative in Rochester is a coalition of organizations and higher education institutions around Rochester that work together to increase awareness and improve water quality education in the community. ey explain that “Most of the pollution of the Genesee Regional Watershed of Lake Ontario comes from stormwater runo that washes lawn and farm chemicals, road salt, soil particles, and other substances from yards, roofs, and pavement.” So, the biggest impact individuals can make on overall water conservation is to help prevent those pollutants from entering storm drains, streams, and ponds.
e Rochester Museum and Science Center encourages everyone to be “H20 Heroes.” By making small choices every day, we can each help decrease the nasty runo that harms plants and animals along the way and that ruins the overall Lake Ontario watershed water quality living beings around the area depend upon.
• Minimize (or avoid altogether) the use of fertilizers and pesticides containing phosphorus; excess phosphorus in a water system tends to cause algae growth.
• Use a commercial car wash, which uses 60% less water than homeowners, sends dirty water to a wastewater treatment plant, and may even reuse water on-site. Otherwise, wash your vehicle on an area such as gravel or grass that lters water before it enters groundwater, storm drains, or creeks.
By making small changes in water usage habits, each of us can help conserve water and promote sustainability.
For more information on RMSC’s H20 Hero program and suggestions, visit www. h2ohero.org/only-rain-down-the-drain. We all can be H20 Heroes and do our individual parts to bene t the collective world.

Cipro Prescription No
Longer the First-Line Treatment for UTIs
DEAR DR. ROACH: I was diagnosed with a UTI on my yearly physical urinalysis, but I had no symptoms. I was prescribed Cipro. The five pages of warnings attached to the prescription scared me! So, I checked the FDA and Mayo Clinic websites. Both said that the “risks outweigh benefits” and it “should not be the first choice to treat a UTI.” But my doctor says to take it, so I will -- 500 mg twice a day for seven days.
Possible side effects include tendon ruptures (including the aorta), nerve damage and more. Scary! I am 71 and in good health with high blood pressure as my only problem, but it’s under control. I wasn’t told if my UTI is complicated or uncomplicated, but I assume uncomplicated, as my blood work, including kidney tests, were all normal. Is this drug safe? Why does the FDA say not to prescribe this as the first choice? -- C.J.
ANSWER: There is a lot wrong here.
First off, asymptomatic bacteria in the urine does not normally get treated, so I wouldn’t have recommended treatment in the first place. I’m not even sure why your doctor ordered a urinalysis -- it’s not recommended as a screening test for most.
Second, I agree with your research that ciprofloxacin (Cipro) should not be the first-line treatment for symptomatic urine infections. Ciprofloxacin does increase risk of tendon rupture very slightly (three to four cases per 100,000 people treated); may damage the aorta (eight cases per 100,000 in one study, while another large study showed no risk); and may cause neuropathy in one case per 150,000.
Resistance to drugs like ciprofloxacin has been increasing. Other choices, like nitrofurantoin, trimethoprim/ sulfamethoxazole or cephalexin, have more effectiveness with less risk of toxicity. That’s why Cipro is no longer a first-line choice. But it can be hard for doctors to unlearn behaviors.
Usually, Cipro is effective and doesn’t cause side effects, but practicing evidence-based medicine means changing behaviors to reflect new information, even if your personal experience has generally been good. An individual doctor isn’t likely to see damage to tendons, aorta or nerves, but if all doctors changed their behavior, there would be even fewer of these rare events.
When it is used, a short course of ciprofloxacin is normally prescribed for three days, not seven, for uncomplicated urine infections in women. The less a person uses this drug, the lower the risk of these rare but severe side effects. Three days is normally sufficient.

THREE WAYS TO RELIEVE ARTHRITIS PAIN
by Dr. Bob Arnot
(NAPSI) — Over the course of my career as a physician, chief medical correspondent and war correspondent, I’ve been exposed to a wide variety of pain management drugs and approaches. One thing I’ve seen is that the United States is much more reliant on taking pills for pain than the rest of the world, where topical analgesics, physical therapy and other approaches are more widely used.
A problem with pills is that many of them come with side effects that can be severe, especially if the medications are used in greater quantities or for longer than they’re supposed to be. That’s one reason for back, muscle and joint pains, I believe it’s best to start with topicals. What’s more, the Centers for Disease Control, the American College of Rheumatology and other medical experts agree it’s a safer approach. Fortunately, if you are an arthritis sufferer and want effective relief, there are two topicals that are FDA approved the same way Ibuprofen, Naproxen Sodium and other prescription pain medicines have been through the demanding new drug application process. While both help relieve arthritis pain, it is important to know the differences between Salonpas Pain Relief Patch Large and Voltaren Arthritis Pain gel.
Salonpas Pain Relief Patch Large was the 1st topical approved by the FDA and provides relief for up to 12 hours. It begins to work in one hour and can provide clinically meaningful pain relief in the first day. Since it is a patch, the medicine is pre-measured and easy to apply. Not only does this patch help relieve arthritis pain, but it also works for back, muscle and joint pain as well.
On the other hand, Voltaren Arthritis Pain gel is not labeled for immediate relief and may take up to 7 days to help achieve relief. To apply this gel, you must first measure out an amount based on a dosing card. Voltaren is effective for up to 6 hours and should only be used for arthritis pain.
In addition to topical relief, joint and muscle pain can be treated with physical therapy. It can keep stiff joints from getting stiffer, reduce strain on joints during daily activities and help you get back to normal life without pain or difficulty.
Also helpful are hot and cold compresses. Heat is good for joint stiffness and cold compresses can ease joint pain.Just remember, don’t apply heat to a joint that’s already hot. If you feel a burning sensation in your joint, cool it with the cold compresses.
Dr. Arnot is board certified in internal medicine and an award-winning journalist, author of twelve books on nutrition and health and host of the Dr. Danger reality TV series. You can find more helpful healthcare and pain relief information from Dr. Arnot at https://us.hisamitsu/.

FRUITS & VEGETABLES MAY LOWER RISK OF PAD
Pain in the lower extremities may be indicative of a condition called peripheral artery disease, or PAD. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute says PAD occurs when plaque builds up in the arteries that carry blood to the limbs, head and organs, contributing to atherosclerosis, or a hardening of the arteries. Blocked blood flow and eventual limited oxygen supply to these areas can cause pain and numbness. When severe enough, PADmayleadtotissuedeath.
Discomfort due to PAD usually occurswhenapersoniswalking or exercising, because the muscles are not getting enough blood during these activities to meet their needs, says the American Heart Association. Those with diabetes may confuse pain with neuropathy, and the elderly may think pain from PAD is a normal sign of aging and stiffness.
Whenundiagnosed,PADcanlead tofurthercomplications, including increased risk for heart attack, stroke, and coronary artery disease. Even amputation of a limb may be necessary. However, PAD is preventable when taking a fewstepstoimprovediet.
According to new research published by the American Heart Association, eating more fruits and vegetables may reduce the risk of developing PAD, which affects an estimated 8.5 million people in the United States alone. Researchers examined dietary data from roughly 3.7 million men and women, with an average age of 65. Approximately 6.3 percent of the subjects had PAD, and 29.2 percent indicated they ate three or more servings of fruits and vegetables each day. The discovery was those who reported eating three or more daily servings of fruits and vegetables had an 18 percent lower risk of PAD than those who reported eating less of these foods. The association between fruit and vegetable consumption andlowerPADriskremainedeven after accounting for age, gender, race, smoking status, and various cardiovascularriskfactors.
Saturated fats, trans-fats and sodium can contribute to the formation of plaques that lead to PAD. Replacing these foods with more vegetables and fruits that are naturally lower in saturated fats can help, as can increasing dietary fiber consumption. One way to incorporate these types of foods is to adhere to a Mediterranean diet, which offers high proportions of legumes, fruits, vegetables; moderate amounts of fish and dairy; and limitedmeatandmeatproducts.

Q&A Master Gardeners
What can I do to start prepping my garden for plants I started indoors if I want to be kind to the critters still bedding in the soil?
Protecting soil critters such as natural soil bacteria, fungi, and other microbes is a lofty goal for your garden. I would consider covering the garden area with some type of organic mulch (straw, leaf litter, bark mulch, etc.). This will discourage early weeds and help preserve moisture later after your plants are in. The mulch should be easily moved aside to let the area to be planted dry out a bit just prior to planting. When ready to plant your seedlings, dig a hole big enough for each plant, leaving the rest of
the soil undisturbed.
Harry Hellwig, Master Gardener Volunteer
When should I start seeds (indoors or outdoors) if the packages say before or after the last frost? How do I know when the last frost will be if the weather’s always changing?
There is an average last frost date for each plant hardiness zone with May 15 the date for zone 5 (Livingston County); Monroe County is zone 6 with an average last frost of May 1.
An average last frost date is not a guarantee against frost. As this date approaches, you need to carefully watch the long-range weather forecast. If there is no frost nor night temperatures below 45° in that forecast, you will probably be safe to plant. You also need to consider daytime temperatures: if several upcoming days will only have high
temperatures in the 50’s, you should wait a few days for warmer weather. Memorial Day weekend is a traditional safe planting date. By that time, there very little risk of cold weather that will harm your plants. But check the forecast to be sure.

STRANGE BUT TRUE
By Lucie Winborne
* Iguanas have three eyes: two in the normal spots and a third on top of their heads, that only perceives brightness.
* The longest song title ever is Hoagy Carmichael’s 1943 “I’m a Cranky Old Yank in a Clanky Old Tank on the Streets of Yokohama with my Honolulu Mama Doin’ Those Beat-o, Beat-o Flat-On-My-Seat-o, Hirohito Blues.”
* Eight of the 10 largest statues in the world are of Buddhas.
* Pittsburgh is the only city where all the major sports teams (MLB, NHL, NFL) have the same colors: black and gold.
