Loves Earth Day! BY AMANDA DUDEK

2

022 marks the 52nd anniversary of the first Earth Day. Reported to be the world’s largest secular observance, Earth Day is expected to mobilize over 1 billion people participating in more than 190 countries (there are approximately 195) around the globe. This incredible, green global phenomenon came from humble beginnings, and like many positive and powerful ideas, it was catalyzed by the written word. In 1962, Rachel Carson’s New York Times bestseller Silent Spring took the world by storm as it was quickly published across 24 countries. Concern over the impact of pollution on the environment, living organisms, and public health grew exponentially, blossoming into the modern environmental movement. With a strong, grassroots presence in local colleges, those early environmental champions chose April 22nd, 1970, to be the first Earth Day in hopes of generating the greatest possible student participation between spring break and final exams. This first Earth Day served as a rallying cry. “Groups that had been fighting individually against oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, freeways, the loss of wilderness and the extinction of wildlife united on Earth Day around [their] shared common values,” states EARTHDAY.ORG. But it wasn’t just environmental groups that united. People from all walks of life, socioeconomic backgrounds, and political persuasions joined together to protect our precious planet. In short order, the United States Environmental Protection Agency was formed. A host of protective environmental legislation soon followed, including such groundbreaking items as the National Environmental Education Act, the Occupational Safety and Health Act, the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, the Endangered Species Act, and the Federal Insecticide Fungicide and Rodenticide Act. This early legislation has done immeasurable good in protecting us and all species that call Earth home. In the more than 50 years since it began, Earth Day has grown in scope and impact as awareness of environmental issues—as well as their importance—has skyrocketed worldwide. Today, over a billion people participate in environmentally focused activities each year, many taking advantage of increasing opportunities to volunteer around their communities and beyond. At the Penny Saver, we believe in being a part of positive environmental change. Print uses the energy of the brief touch of ink to paper compared to the 24/7 energy of digital counterparts. Moreover, these digital products are often made using metals (rare earth elements or REEs) procured with destructive mining practices resulting in alarming and

harmful environmental side effects such as contaminated groundwater, toxic waste and radioactive residue, polluted air, water, and soil, not to mention human rights problems. Far from being biodegradable, these items commonly produce toxic e-waste at the end of their notoriously short life cycles, putting many at risk of exposure to over 1,000 harmful substances, including lead, mercury, nickel, brominated flame retardants and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Your Penny Saver on the other hand is made from replanted trees. Each publication can also be recycled at home after reading so its use continues in the production cycle of new and useful products. Any waste or scrap remaining from our manufacturing process including paper, cardboard and even our printing plates are collected and sent to a sorting facility for recycling. Lastly, any unused ink or absorbents that do not go into the paper itself are safely collected and processed at approved facilities with as much oil recycled as possible. Have any extra paper recycling for us? We’ll take it at the south end of our Avon facility. Just call ahead to let us know you’re on your way! The Penny Saver is proud to put printed copies of our paper in your hands every week. Paper, a versatile resource, is renewable, sustainable, and a natural way to sequester additional carbon. Celebrating the planet on Earth Day and every day, we are committed to bringing you your Penny Saver every week: recyclable, renewable and green. Looking for inspiring, eco-friendly activities you can do to celebrate Earth Day? EARTHDAY.ORG has 52 of them (one for each week of the year). We’ve selected a dozen of our favorites we think you may like, too! • Advocate for climate education. • Pick up trash while you run. • Organize a community cleanup. • Ask for green energy. • Learn how to combat plastic pollution. • Explore Earth Day 2022 Action Tool Kit. • Compost. • Take pictures of pollinators. • Grow an organic garden. • Use a reusable water bottle. • Turn off lights when not in use. • Use environmentally friendly cleaning products.

Grooming By CORNER Appointment Only! PAW’S By Sam Mazzotta Monday-Saturday

This is Echo. She is a 14 week old St. Bernewfie (Mom is a Newfoundland and Dad a St. Bernard) and she is the newest member of our furry family. She has lots of energy and loves to play with her two doggie sisters. Echo loves to eat her fruits and vegetables as a healthy snack, but one of her favorite treats is an ice cube, especially on the warmer days. We all just love Echo and she loves being a part of our family!

Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

something on social media about a town in New York state that passed an ordinance requiring pets to “cover their genitals” by wearing pants. This is ridiculous! Is it for real? -- Clark G. DEAR CLARK: It’s a wild idea, but no, the photo circulating on social media is fake. Pet owners, you can put away those doggy pants. (Unless your dog enjoys wearing them, of course.) Officials with the city of Auburn, New York, were unpleasantly surprised to find their city’s letterhead going viral on social media just a couple of weeks ago. A fake letter said that residents’ pets would be required to wear pants outside so that their genitals would not be in view. “It is an uncomfortable and difficult situation for a parent, grandparent or guardian to have to explain to their ward when they are questioned about canine and feline genitals,” the letter said. It also claimed that many towns in New England have made pet pants mandatory -- also not true. It’s probably no accident that the fake letter started circulating just before April Fool’s Day. And while it seems like a funny prank, the city of Auburn isn’t laughing. “The intentional misrepresentation of the law and the forgery of the signature of an elected official are illegal acts and should be taken seriously,” City Clerk Chuck Mason told The Citizen. (Read the article at this link: https:// tinyurl.com/2p8uedv4, or search for “auburnpub.com, pet pants”). Hopefully, no one takes this to heart and tries to get a similar ordinance passed in their town. Our dogs and cats can let it all hang out with no fear of official reprisal, or ladies fainting away from the shock. Send your questions, tips and comments to ask@pawscorner. com. S E V RA Good Friday Treat! My friend and I stopped in for lunch at Peppermints in Avon on Good Friday. We each ordered one of their awesome fish fries. Imagine my surprise as I got up to pay for our meal when our server said our check was paid. We both were overwhelmed with the kindness! I don’t know if it was someone who knew us or a random stranger. Whomever it was, we were appreciative of the gesture, and as always, the fish fry was excellent!

Sky High Our village recently reassessed everyone. The average increase was 25%, raising all assessments by thousands. People are struggling with gas prices and food prices; now this? Seniors on fixed incomes will be forced out. If the leadership of our community does not intervene and lower the new assessments, we all need to stand together and vote them out. Sirens Needed Our friend is a first responder/fireman. We have been with him on many occasions when the siren goes off, and he leaves in a flash. Yes, there is an app on his phone that alerts of an incident. However, not every event is reported early enough to be sent out through the app, so first responders are notified via the siren. An incident doesn't just mean a fire. It could be a car accident (and someone must be removed with the Jaws of Life), child or animal locked in a hot car, an elderly person who has fallen and is unconscious- any number of things. These sirens let us know that our brave men and women are now aware that we need them. Be relieved that this notification system exists. If anything happened to you or one of your loved ones, you would be grateful that a warning has gone out to all your local first responders. It could make a difference between life or death. Stop when required! To the selfish people who decide to blow stop signs and/or cut people off in such a hurry just to drag their butts to their destination while sightseeing: If you're in that much of a hurry to break the law while cutting others off, at least continue on and don't hold up traffic! Money can't buy common sense!

Good Neighbors! On Tuesday, April 11th, we had appointments for our 2nd Covid boosters. Everything went fine at CVS in Avon. The pharmacist was excellent. Once we left, we walked to our car. My husband, with his low blood sugar, got dizzy. I got him part-way into the front seat, and he couldn't move. Just then, a woman in a van pulled up, and she asked if she could help. She had my husband put his arms around her, and she pulled him up and got him straight around. She was a nurse named Michelle from Caledonia: a true angel. Also, a young man came over to our car to see if we needed further assistance. They were both wonderful and really helped us out. God bless! - Martha Thanks! Thank you to the unknown gentleman who helped push my disabled car to the shoulder of Gauss Road on April 5th. I’m sorry that I didn’t ask your name but know that I am thankful for your help! - Pat, Bloomfield

Siren Rethink You're right. We are all grateful for first responders in our community, but you seem to think that the siren, which has been around for a long time, is affecting so many on the autism spectrum or with hearing aids? Is it really, or is it just bothering you? I'm a mother to an 8-year-old nonverbal boy, who I teach to understand all these sirens and loud noises as well as to understand their meanings. The sirens may not be necessary for those who receive the notifications to respond to such emergencies, but it's a general public notification each time to make sure your local fire department (if coming your way) has room. Also, not everyone is on their phones 24/7 (besides the fact the sirens remind me how important life is and how quickly it can go). So, that nice loud siren helps get those responders to the scene and or firehouse quicker. Maybe you should wear ear plugs and just be thank our community is still safe because of those "noise pollution sirens."

STAY SAFE WHEN SELLING YOUR CAR Millions of people across the globe sell their used vehicles each year, and many of those sales go smoothly. But selling to strangers carries some risk, and sellers must consider their safety when putting their vehicles up for sale. Arrange to meet prospective buyers in public. While it can be inconvenient to drive to a public place each time a prospective buyer expresses interest in your vehicle, sacrificing convenience for security is worth the extra effort. Many people would not invite strangers to their homes under typical circumstances, so it makes no sense to do so when selling a vehicle. If possible, invite buyers to meet you in the parking lot of your office. Or if the car you’re selling is not the car you drive to work each day, then arrange to meet with buyers in a mall or grocery store parking lot. Meet buyers with a buddy in tow. There’s safety in numbers, so bring a friend or family member along when meeting prospective buyers. Many buyers won’t pose a threat to sellers, but some may be criminals looking to steal a vehicle or cause harm to sellers who are complete strangers. Criminals are less likely to attack or take advantage of two or more people than one person. And should anything go wrong with a sale, having a witness around to back up your version of sale terms cannot hurt. Let prospective buyers know you want to see some identification. When prospective buyers respond to your ad, let them know you will want to see some valid photo identification before you allow them to take the car for a test drive. Letting prospective buyers know this in advance of meeting them can prevent an awkward, potentially confrontational situation when you meet in person. Don’t be afraid to turn away buyers who seem suspicious. While your goal might be to sell your vehicle as quickly as possible, don’t hesitate to turn away prospective buyers who make you feel uneasy. If they insist on seeing the vehicle, hang up the phone after informing them you intend to contact the authorities.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

There’s No Magic Bullet to Put Belly Fat in Check ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 70-year-old woman, mostly healthy (apart from well-controlled high blood pressure). Looking at me, people assume I am skinny, but I have a well-concealed HUGE belly along with my thin arms and legs. I look like an olive stuck with toothpicks. My diet is healthy for the most part: I eat snack foods, deep-fried fast foods or sweets only rarely. I have read about how to eliminate belly fat, but there is so much contradictory info, each claiming to be the best. What are truly effective ways to help eliminate belly fat? -- M.H. ANSWER: First, I would want to be sure what you have really is belly fat. While there are men (and a few women) who have that body shape due to fat, I have seen far too many cases of liver disease (where the abdominal cavity is filled with fluid due to high pressure in the liver) and ovarian cancer (where the abdomen is filled with fluid due to tumor). I would want to be sure you had been evaluated for these (and other) concerns, especially if this is a change in your normal body shape. If it is abdominal fat, there is no magic diet. What works for someone else (even your twin sister, if you had one) might not work for you. For this reason, one single type of diet does not fit all. It may take patience and trying several different options before finding what works for you. General advice includes avoiding the foods you noted you eat sparingly. Eat lots of vegetables and whole grains with fiber; modest amounts of fruits; several servings of nuts and fish weekly; and no more than modest amounts of meats. Advice from an expert in weight management may be of great benefit.

DID YOU KNOW? Halitosis, or bad breath as it’s commonly known, can result from any number of factors. While food can be a culprit, some additional factors may be contributing to mouth odor as well. Poor dental hygiene is a particular concern. According to Colgate and the American Dental Association, failure to brush and floss teeth regularly leads to the accumulation of food particles in the mouth. This food can collect bacteria and begin to break down, causing a bad aroma. Dry mouth is another condition that causes bad breath. Without adequate saliva production, particles of food that may cause odor are not swept away regularly. Bad breath also may be an indication of a medical condition elsewhere in the body. Upper respiratory infections and gastrointestinal disturbances may contribute to halitosis.

GUTTER PROTECTION SYSTEM • heavy gauge aluminum • fits over existing gutters • no roof penetrations required • eliminates cleaning

There are certain things you must do and should do if you plan to erect a fence. Most people find neighbors appreciate being informed of any decisions you are thinking of making to the property that can affect their views or their adjoining property. Before drawing up fence plans with a contractor, talk to the neighbors on either side of your home and gauge their receptiveness to a fence. At this point, you may want to consider offering to make the fencing project a joint deal to save money should the neighbors decide to install a fence as well. Contractors will often discount if they have several customers doing an installation at the same time. Property owners can save by splitting the costs of the shared walls of the fence where their property lines meet.

585-967-7919 GET ON THE FAST TRACK TO BEING ORGANIZED • Keep a cleanup bin handy. Put an empty basket in a central location, using it to gather stray items scattered around main living areas. Once everything has been collected, items can be returned to their rightful place. • Make the bed. One of the easiest ways to keep a room looking neat is to make the bed each day. Store clean linens in a pillow case so the entire set is together and ready to go. • Purge closets and cabinets. There’s no point allowing old, stained or damaged items to take up space. Set aside days to clear expired medication from the bathroom cabinet, discard ripped or ill-fitting clothing from the closet, or to dispose of broken toys in a nursery. • Write things down. Tasks seem more manageable when they are written down in black-and-white and can be crossed off as completed. Writing things down also helps make the mind feel more organized. • Exercise caution before buying. Don’t buy more than you need; otherwise, you’ll have to find space for extra items. Also, keep inventory of food and supplies in the house so you’re not unwittingly buying duplicates. • Sort mail and paperwork. Establish different categories for papers so they can be sorted and discarded as needed. These may include bills, invitations, school papers, and junk mail. Reduce paper clutter by opting for digital correspondence when possible.

• Make one repair at a time. Tackle that source of stress by focusing on one repair and seeing it through to completion. • Delegate the work. If kids want to help organize, let them. It can be a fun project for an adolescent to rearrange the pantry or offer their ideas for corralling messes. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Pretzels, somewhat surprisingly, got their start in the Catholic Church. Sometime around the 7th Century A.D., monks presented their students with treats of baked dough twisted in the shape of crossed arms. At the time, crossing one’s arms was the traditional posture for prayer. Not only that, but pretzels, made from water, flour and salt, were also the perfect food for Lent, when meat, dairy and eggs were prohibited.

The real religion of the world comes from women much more than from men — from mothers most of all, who carry the key of our souls in their bosoms. ~Oliver Wendell Holmes

By Fifi Rodriguez By JoAnn Derson * A good non-slip bathmat is essential in the tub to prevent accidents. Grab an extra one to drape over the edge of the tub for help when entering and exiting. * “To remove residue left over from price tags, use hairspray. SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Odds Are Your Pantry Holds Expired Food

Is it time to go through your pantry and look for any expired food items that might have been purchased over the past two years? You might be surprised. I sure was. I’d been careful, with new items lined up behind old ones in my cabinets. The problem I just discovered, after picking up a load of curbside items, is the expiration dates of newer items aren’t necessarily better than items that have been in the cabinet for a while. They might be worse. Why, I inquired of our store manager, was a box of crackers due to expire sooner than the box I bought two months ago? With a sigh, he admitted the problem: The warehouse is having a terrible time getting in anything. And managers have set up their own grocery swap with other nearby stores in the chain, basically bidding on items another store might have. “I’ll give you six boxes of crackers for six half-gallons of whole milk!” Additionally, he said, he’s having a heck of a time getting trained people to work the night shift to stock the shelves correctly. Then, when the curbside pickup people race through the aisles to select items for each order, they grab from the front ... without looking at expiration dates. Which is a long way of saying: Check your groceries. Either when you pick them up curbside and bring them home or when you take something out of your cabinets, look at the expiration dates and store them accordingly. A helpful note in seeing those expiration dates at home: A black marker is very handy to write expiration dates on packages and cans that can be seen at a glance. No more turning jars over trying to find a date; no more squinting at the tiny print. You’ll have all the dates in large black letters. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

MOTHER’S DAY CELEBRATION IDEAS The Crafter Mothers who are avid crafters may enjoy a craft-themed Mother’s Day. A family crafting project can make for a fun afternoon and produce mementos that Mom will cherish for years to come. Dads and kids can plan the project in advance without Mom’s knowledge, arranging all of the materials ahead of time and setting up the crafting station the night before or while Mom is relaxing on Mother’s Day morning. Kids can even get a head start on the day by making their own craft for Mom and giving it to her as a Mother’s Day present. Dads can keep the craft theme going at dinner and get a laugh out of Mom by pouring her a craft beer when dinner is served.

General eulogy preparation tips: * Eulogies are for the living, and for everyone at a remembrance service. * Be brief. People listen for three to five minutes. After five minutes, people stop listening. * Do a bit of research. Talk to others. What are some childhood memories? Was there a favorite lesson learned? Was there a favorite quote or an inspiring song? What was the deceased like at work? What were some favorite accomplishments? * Write out the eulogy. Even if you are an experienced speaker, during the emotional time of a rememberance service it is especially easy to wander. * Write and speak from the heart. Be yourself. * Practice the eulogy. Time it. Rehearse in front of an audience (one or two people). Listen to their feedback. Edit. Practice again. * Have a back-up plan. In case you are unable to begin or finish, have someone else prepared to deliver the eulogy for you. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

www.AuctionZip.com Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

WORKING PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE Many working parents struggle to maintain a healthy balance between their responsibilities at work and their obligations to their families. An inability to maintain that healthy balance can have adverse effects on men and women’s careers as well as the relationships they have with their families.

A 2015 survey of more than 2,000 adults commissioned by the workplace solution provider Workfront found that 38 percent of survey participants have missed life events because of a bad work-life balance. Access to technology that means work is never too far away might contribute to poor work-life balance, as 57 percent of respondents also acknowledged feeling that technology has ruined the definition of a family dinner.

WAYS ESTABLISHED PROFESSIONALS CAN IMPROVE THEIR RÉSUMÉS Rather than emphasize what you did, highlight what you plan to do. This means giving greater weight to the expertise that will translate into your new position. Chances are you can find skills that you honed in one or more jobs that translate into credentials that can be used on another. All of the skills mentioned should be relevant to your career objective and not just added to pad the résumé. Therefore, unless your brief stint waiting tables exemplifies how you developed customer service skills, eliminate it.
