Genesee Vaey Plein Air Painters Show f Final Weekend in Caledonia T BY AMANDA DUDEK

his weekend marks the final opportunity to view and purchase works in the Genesee Valley Plein Air Painters Annual Show and Sale held at the Village Gallery in Caledonia. Opening with 60 oil, acrylic, and watercolor paintings as well as pastels, this exhibition showcases many eye-catching scenes across the Genesee Valley. Produced by the Genesee Valley Plein Air Painters, these select, high-quality works, featuring local outdoor spaces, were chosen, reviewed digitally, and juried by Master Level Artist, Kenn Erroll Backhaus. Plein Air painting is, essentially, painting in the outdoors, producing works which‚ “have been painted on site of the subject in the open air‚ (natural light).” Genesee Valley Plein Air Painters, Inc, established in 2005, is comprised of a group of artists who reside throughout the Greater Rochester, Genesee Valley, and Finger Lakes regions, and who‚“seek to capture the splendor of nature and the world around [them].” The Village Gallery owner and award-winning artist Bill White explains the attraction of Plein Air painting. “Plein Air painting has its origins with Impressionism with artists like Monet who would go and paint live from a subject as opposed to painting them in a studio,” he explained. Although White has been Plein Air Painting since the 1990s, he and his wife, Linda, did not move from Virginia to Caledonia until 2016. “I joined the Genesee Valley Plein Air Painters,” he said. “I have been pleased to continue with artists of like interests. Sometimes, the group will schedule a painting event at a location, such as Mendon Ponds, and members are free to join in. Members can also paint on their own, which many of us do, also.” Having spent 39 years as a Professor of Painting at Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia; having received grants from the Cabell, Mellon & Ford Foundations, and having been honored with the Kendig Individual Artist Award, Bill White not only owns and operates The Village Gallery, but he offers classes and lectures throughout the year, as well. White says it is important to artists‚“including those artists whose work is currently on display in the show‚ “to have people experience their work. “One of the qualities of our gallery is that we provide a venue for local and regional artists to display their work,” White said. “Painters, sculptors, photographers and other artists put their heart and soul into the art they make, and it is important for

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

people to come, experience, and appreciate the range and the quality of their work. Artists need an appreciative audience.” White notes that many of the shows sponsored by his gallery offer a People’s Choice Award to encourage visitors to look carefully at the artwork before them in order to vote for their favorite. What wonderful variety to appreciate with Plein Air painting! “The Genesee Valley, Greater Rochester area, and Finger Lakes Region offers a wide variety of landscape qualities, including farmland and barns and certainly the lakes which provide many waterways, creeks, and so on,” White observed. “There is a lot of variety and places to go and paint. In our show here, it is interesting to see how different kinds of scenes are attractive to particular painters. Some like wooded areas; others boats and docks and friezes along the water. I think it creates in the individual works a quality of expression unique to that artist because they like to work from it.” White notes that The Village Gallery will have additional shows throughout the year. “Our next show will have the theme of any work that is done in black and white (to include grays), nothing with colors,” he explained. “Drawings, paintings, photography, sculpture. It is open to anyone within a 25-mile radius. It is not juried or reviewed, so whatever comes in will be accepted. The Genesee Valley Plein Air Painters Annual Show and Sale will hold its final showings on Friday & Saturday, April 29th-30th from 11am until 5pm. Appointments are also available. On Saturday afternoon, April 30th, the artists will hold a paint out group event in Caledonia. “People will be Plein Air painting in one of our neighbor’s backyards on Main Street, in Tennent Park, and anywhere else they may find an interesting scene, anywhere in Caledonia that day,” said White, inviting everyone who can to stop by.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * “If you add a teaspoon of sugar to your biscuit mix or to the dough for rolls, it will help them to brown well, and they will come out of the oven with golden tops.” -- J.R. in Michigan

Refresh Your Home for Spring Get rid of grime A whole season’s worth of dirt and dust accumulates during the cold winter months. A deep clean inside and out can restore your home to its former glory. Inside, take time to launder all of your linens, including curtains, rugs and bedding. Move furniture to vacuum behind and below, and don’t overlook dust and dirt magnets like mirrors, light fixtures and the insides of cabinets, especially higher shelves that see infrequent use. Outdoors, hose off or power-wash surfaces like windows, siding, decks and concrete to restore a crisp, clean appearance.

* Two ways to save money on laundry expenses: First, spring and summer are an excellent time to get into line-drying clothes -- especially towels and jeans that take longer to dry thoroughly in a dryer. Then, clean out and shorten your dryer’s vent hose to make your machine more energy efficient. It cuts down on drying time, too, saving you time AND money. * “Got an odd job coming up? Before you go out and purchase an expensive limited-use tool, check with friends and neighbors to see if you can borrow instead of buying. Check with local hardware stores to see if it’s cheaper to rent, too.” -- S.L. in Kentucky * “I have pets that leave hair and dirt on the couch. When I wash my cushion covers, one thing I always do is put them back on the pillows when they are not quite dry. They stretch better when they’re a little bit damp. I had a terrible time a few years ago when I let them dry all the way and couldn’t get them back on!” -- H.P. in Arizona * “To clean burned-on bits from your cast-iron skillet, scrub with a plastic scrubbie and salt as an abrasive. Dry immediately and rub with oil to keep moist.” -- R.T. in Ohio GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

HOW TO ROAD TRIP IN AN ELECTRIC CAR Determine the charging time of your vehicle: The automotive experts at J.D. Power note that EVs come with different types of charging systems. Level 1 are the most readily available EVs, and these come with a standard 120-volt three prong plug that’s common in modern homes in the United States. That’s convenient, but charging using a Level 1 outlet may take a significant amount of time and only provide a few miles per hour of charging. If you’re renting an EV, confirm which type of car you’re getting and emphasize to the rental agency that you prefer a car that can be charged easily and effectively. One that can be charged overnight and provide hundreds of miles of driving time after a full charge is ideal.

7653 Parker Hill Rd., Dansville, NY STAY SAFE WHEN SELLING YOUR CAR Millions of people across the globe sell their used vehicles each year, and many of those sales go smoothly. But selling to strangers carries some risk, and sellers must consider their safety when putting their vehicles up for sale. Arrange to meet prospective buyers in public. While it can be inconvenient to drive to a public place each time a prospective buyer expresses interest in your vehicle, sacrificing convenience for security is worth the extra effort. Many people would not invite strangers to their homes under typical circumstances, so it makes no sense to do so when selling a vehicle. If possible, invite buyers to meet you in the parking lot of your office. Or if the car you’re selling is not the car you drive to work each day, then arrange to meet with buyers in a mall or grocery store parking lot. Meet buyers with a buddy in tow. There’s safety in numbers, so bring a friend or family member along when meeting prospective buyers. Many buyers won’t pose a threat to sellers, but some may be criminals looking to steal a vehicle or cause harm to sellers who are complete strangers. Criminals are less likely to attack or take advantage of two or more people than one person. And should anything go wrong with a sale, having a witness around to back up your version of sale terms cannot hurt. Let prospective buyers know you want to see some identification. When prospective buyers respond to your ad, let them know you will want to see some valid photo identification before you allow them to take the car for a test drive. Letting prospective buyers know this in advance of meeting them can prevent an awkward, potentially confrontational situation when you meet in person. Don’t be afraid to turn away buyers who seem suspicious. While your goal might be to sell your vehicle as quickly as possible, don’t hesitate to turn away prospective buyers who make you feel uneasy. If they insist on seeing the vehicle, hang up the phone after informing them you intend to contact the authorities.

Shop Smart for Mother’s Day

Parts unknown: Moms who love to travel and experience other cultures would certainly appreciate a trip abroad or a domestic getaway to a region of the country they have yet to explore. Before booking any such trips, speak to your Mom and ask if there’s anywhere in particular she’d like to go. Such trips can be expensive, so adults might want to speak to their siblings and finance such an excursion together.

Avoid “final sale” items. It can be tempting to peruse the deep-discount rack at Mom’s favorite store when retailers cut prices on items in anticipation of a new season. However, these sales may come with restrictions on returns or exchanges. Unless you know Mom will like what you pick out, avoid the “final sale” racks in favor of items that can be returned or exchanged.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Surviving Inflation

Recent government figures outlined food price increases for one month. The numbers are grim. Fruits and vegetables went up 2.3%, the highest since 2010. Dairy went up 1.9%, the highest since 2011. Cereals and bakery items went up 1.1%. Averaged over the past 12 months, food prices have risen 8.6% (the highest increase since 1981), with poultry and fish climbing 13% and beef soaring 16%. Wow! We knew it was bad because each time we go to the grocery store, we’re spending more to get less. But to see the figures laid out in print just brings home how bad things have gotten. Bloomberg (www.bloomberg.com), whose economists we need to keep an eye on, predicts that this year we’ll pay an additional $5,200 for all household items (including gas, heating fuel and everything else) and services, which it calculates at $433 per month. We need to reconsider how we feel about food banks. We seniors generally don’t want to do that, saying, “Oh, others need it more.” Well, at this point, maybe we are those others? In a few days, I’ll be driving three of my senior neighbors to the food bank for the weekly pickup. It will be their first time, and they are nervous. But I made a scouting trip last week, parking across the street from the line of cars and walking over to talk to the person in charge. I was able to report back: No, they don’t take your name or ask questions (except maybe to ask if you’d prefer apple or orange juice). No, they’re not judgmental. No, it’s not leftover expired food, and the fruits and vegetables were fresh and lovely. The people were friendly and welcoming, happy to do what they were doing. Just go to the food bank. You won’t be judged. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

Many families also resort to take-out foods that can be high in sodium, hydrogenated fats and refined sugars. “The best solution is to find healthy, prepared products that can be purchased in bulk at the supermarket, online and delivered to your doorstep,” advises consumer trends expert Merilee Kern. One of Kern’s personal favorites is Veggies Made Great, which offers easy, familyfriendly and delicious veggie-rich meals and snacks such as muffins, frittatas and veggie cakes. They can fill freezers and keep families healthy—even during stressful times. Vegetables including carrots, zucchini and kale are the first and primary ingredients in any Veggies Made Great item, and all are free of gluten, soy, peanuts and dairy. Available in the freezer section, each is individually wrapped and can be quickly and easily heated in the oven or microwave. It’s an easy and tasty way to have veggiedriven nutrition on the menu every day. You can find them at www.TheHealthfoodStore.com and locate retailers at www.VeggiesMadeGreat.com.

A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials heavy and sudden, fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends who rejoice with us in our sunshine desert us; when trouble thickens around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts. ~Washington Irving

HOMETOWN

AT-HOME NUTRITION AND COOKING WITH KIDS RECIPES FOR FUN: If you’re preparing a meal, it could be a good time to teach children of reading age how to review a recipe. Evaluating ingredients to learn how food transforms from raw to cooked or how a dish is created can help kids learn kitchen skills. FOOD GROUPS FOCUS: Get kids involved in making dinner by setting a rule that each food group must be represented. Give them a warmup activity by asking which food groups are found in family favorites like chicken soup, lasagna or meatloaf. Asking kids to guess which ingredients are used in these dishes and identifying which food group each ingredient belongs to can help them understand dietary balance.

GUIDELINES FOR HOMETOWN EVENTS:

1. Rush Senior Basketball Leary Elementary School 2. Sunrise Service - Rose Ridge Cemetery Naples, NY 3. Celebrating Earth Day with free trees, shrubs, & plant seedlings at Little Lakes Community Center! 4. Beautiful Easter Sunday afternoon Schwartz Trail, Naples, NY

COMMON CAUSES OF TOOTHACHES Impacted wisdom teeth: Wisdom teeth are a dental milestone that takes place between the ages of 17 and 21. Wisdom teeth actually are third molars, and are given the name because they come in at a mature age, according to the American Dental Association. If there isn’t enough space for them, wisdom teeth can cause crowding and pain. When molars do not fully erupt, the result is impacted wisdom teeth, which can be very painful.

There are different types of depression. A person may have a single bout of major depression or recurring episodes. Depression that lasts two or more years is called persistent depressive disorder. A less common type of depression is called manic-depressive illness. This involves cycles of depression that alternate with extreme highs, or manias.

The human papillomavirus, often referred to as HPV, is a group of more than 150 related viruses. According to the American Cancer Society, HPVs are called “papillomaviruses” because some types cause noncancerous tumors known papillomas, or warts. Some types of HPVs are known to cause cancer, including those of the cervix, vagina, vulva, penis, anus, and parts of the mouth and throat. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 79 million people in the United States are currently infected with HPV. HPV vaccines can be very effective, preventing infections that can cause six different types of cancer, but are most effective when administered to older children and teenagers. The ACS notes that doctors recommend boys and girls receive the HPV vaccine at age 11 or 12. In such instances, boys and girls will receive two doses of the vaccine six to 12 months apart. While the vaccine can be administered later, kids or even young adults who do not receive the vaccine when they are between the ages of 15 and 26 will need to receive three doses within an eight-month span.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Can Prilosec be Taken for More than 14 Days? ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: What’s the story with Prilosec? Doctors routinely tell people with GERD or acid stomach to take this forever. Yet it clearly describes only a 14-day treatment on the box. A physician assistant told me that because of a rare infrequent condition some users have that the manufacturer is legally bound to post the 14-day limit, but that the general population can safely ignore it. Can you enlighten and reassure those of us whose physicians have said to take it long term? -- C.D.C. ANSWER: The patient instructions in the over-the-counter versions of proton pump inhibitors, such as omeprazole (Prilosec), do recommend a 14-day course. However, longer courses may indeed be prescribed by a licensed prescriber, such as a PA. Even so, there are relatively few people who need lifelong medication. Those who do may have a condition such as Barrett’s esophagus, in which PPIs -- the most potent medical treatment to suppress stomach acid -- are necessary. They not only relieve symptoms, they are also prescribed in hopes of reducing the risk of developing cancer of the esophagus. The data on this are still not clear. For people with acid reflux (also called gastroesophageal reflux disease), PPIs are usually not needed lifelong. However, it may still be reasonable to use these drugs long term if the prescriber feels the benefit outweighs the risk. There are several risks of long-term use of PPIs. Stomach acids are important in protecting against bacteria, and two kinds of bacterial infections are more common in PPI users. The first is in the colon, especially of Clostridium difficile, where PPI users are about 30% more likely to be infected and may do so even without the antibiotic use that is the most common risk factor for C. diff. The second is pneumonia, although the apparent association may not be as strong as formerly thought. Low stomach acid may decrease absorption of vitamins and minerals, especially magnesium, iron and vitamin B12. PPIs were thought to increase the risk of a rare tumor, gastric carcinoid, based on data from rats, and of colon cancer. Those risks have not been seen in humans. Early data suggest increased risk of kidney disease and dementia. That risk appears to be small, if it even exists. Long-term PPI use has some risk of side effects and should be used only when there are benefits to PPIs that can’t be obtained with other treatments, including other medications and lifestyle changes. This especially includes better diet, weight loss when appropriate and not eating right before bed. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. POST-WINTER GARDEN PREP Assess plant location. If plants, flowers or gardens have struggled in recent years or never grew especially vibrant, then gardeners may want to assess the location of their plant life before spring gardening season begins. Some plants may not be getting enough sunlight in certain locations on a property, while others might be overexposed to the sun during spring and summer. Moving plants that are not thriving prior to the start of spring gardening season may be just what gardens need to flourish in the coming weeks. HOME SERVICES

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Dog Bitten in Snout Keeps Licking Wound DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My dog “Jesse” was bitten on the face by another dog, injuring his snout and nose so badly that it required several stitches. I can’t get Jesse to stop licking and pawing at the wound, and now he’s tearing out the stitches. The wound looks infected. What should I do? -Kamo M. DEAR KAMO: Head straight back to the veterinarian to get the wound treated for infection and closed up again. This time, have Jesse fitted for a cone-shaped E-collar. It’s jokingly called the “cone of shame,” but is an important medical device for helping to heal just such an injury. Dogs really don’t like E-collars, and they can cause stress, but if he’s able to paw at the wound, it must be worn. You can take it off Jesse at mealtimes so he can access his food, but it must go right back on. There are a few other protective collars available that are more comfortable, like padded rings, but these may not stop the pawing. Jesse’s also licking his nose, which is understandable since it probably feels weird and swollen and itchy. This can be a problem area because dogs naturally lick their nose throughout the day. The vet may give you medicine to help it heal or may recommend an overthe-counter antibiotic ointment. Put the medicine on as directed. Help reduce the chance of infection by having clean, fresh water for Jesse to drink (to clean his tongue before licking his nose) and replacing any manky old dog toys (which have a lot of germs) with clean chew toys. Don’t let Jesse sniff at or eat nasty stuff (dogs love roadkill and other animals’ poo) until the wounds heal. Send your questions, tips and comments to ask@pawscorner. com.

STEPS INVOLVED WITH ESTATE PLANNING A will is an important component of estate planning. Without clearly and legally spelling out your wishes, there is no guarantee that those wishes will be honored. It will be up to a state or province to make potentially lifealtering decisions that can impact your surviving family members, and the only way to ensure your wishes will be carried out is to put them into a will. Although men and women can write their own wills, many people prefer to seek the assistance of an attorney, who can make sure all necessary details are included in the will.

S E V RA Earth Day thanks! For the past 10 years, Riga Recreation has participated in the Monroe County Park's Earth Day celebration by holding an annual Pick Up the Parks event at all Monroe County Parks. This year's initiative at Churchville Park was an overwhelming success with 58 community members volunteering their time to pick up trash and tree damage due to recent high winds. We even had two bins filled with pharmaceutical waste products brought in. Many thanks to the following organizations that participated this year: Village of Churchville, Town of Riga, Waste management, Churchville Lions and LEO Clubs, Newman-Riga Library, Chili Soccer Assn. and students from Churchville and Chestnut Ridge Elementary Schools. Many thanks to all! - David Thomas, Recreational Supervisor, Town of Riga Thank you! Thank you to Bob Thompson for organizing and running the 5th annual Take Pride in Hemlock Litter Pick Up. Additionally, we would like to thank all the volunteers who came out to assist in this yearly project. We had all kinds of volunteers from Livonia school's National Honor society to a local business owner to several residents as well as Little Lakes volunteers all pitching in to make a difference. This year, it was noticeable that there was much less garbage. We feel that the "Take Pride in Hemlock" is spreading through this hamlet year-round. Keep up the great work! Grateful! What an amazing outpouring of folks who came to the Little Lakes Community Center in Hemlock for the free trees, shrubs, and plants giveaway on April 23rd! (Perhaps 100+ came early.) A big thank you to Tawn Feeney for purchasing the seedlings and handing them out in celebration of Earth Day. A number of people who didn't receive the giveaway came inside the Center for the first time and learned about what is offered here for them. Even if we ran short on trees, we hope you'll come back and take part in our many other events and classes. Thank you to all community members for their support of our activities.

Shameful It is a shame that the ship named after the Sullivan’s war heroes is in the disarray that it is. I can’t understand how a ship of one of the most powerful nations in the world could be let go to the point of sinking at the Navel Yard. This is a slap in the face to all Veterans and moreover the heroes it was named after and the ones who served on this ship. I am a Vietnam Vet, and I am appalled that this could happen. It is bad enough that Veterans have to wait 40 years to get a disability rating when pushed out of the service. Someone should be [held accountable] for the way this ship has ended up. Forgetfulness It appears to me that many people have forgotten how production all over the world seemed to come to a halt because of the COVID pandemic. These shutdowns caused shortages in many products, and thus prices for those products rose. These people also seem to have forgotten the backup in the ports that prevented shipments from getting to the marketplace, which also helped to cause shortages. I believe most of our economic problems can be traced directly to COVID. Be patient. Things will get better, hopefully sooner rather than later. Sensitivity please! To the woman who saw my father’s work van at my house and called his employer to try to report him for “goofing off.” His employer is very aware of his whereabouts and the fact that, unlike someone like you who always has access to bathroom facilities and a kitchen, he may be entitled to a break. May your husband and children always be entitled to the same considerations. In addition, my dad had just completed a messy job around the block from you. (Yes, we know you called!) He was unable to clean himself up thoroughly afterwards, as you would have been able to do in a home or office building. So, a convenient quick stop at his daughter’s house to use her facilities allowed him to, among other things, make himself more presentable before his next call and get water to go. I hope that if your loved ones have blue collar jobs one day, you will have gained more sensitivity to these issues. I would have addressed you in person, but I am much too angry, and I want others to be aware, as well.

HOW TO NEGOTIATE (AND GET) A SALARY INCREASE Salaries in the workplace have long been a hot-button issue for women. The differences in compensation for males and females continues to draw the attention of politicians and gender equality advocates alike. The United States Department of Labor noted that, in 2015, the median weekly earnings for fulltime male workers increased by 2.2 percent from the year prior. During that same period, female earnings increased by just 0.8 percent. That latest data marks the third consecutive quarter that the increase in males’ earnings doubled that of females. On average, women who work fulltime earn 81.1 cents for every dollar men earn. Women aware of that unfair gap in pay may feel helpless to address it with their bosses out of fear of being seen as unappreciative or selfish. In fact, addressing compensation makes many workers uncomfortable, regardless of their gender. According to a salary survey from PayScale, almost 60 percent of male and female workers do not ask for a raise. Negotiating salary increases requires finesse, timing and being informed. It also requires a certain measure of gumption.

WORKING PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE Set reasonable goals. Much of the difficulty men and women experience in regard to finding a healthy work-life balance may be a byproduct of working parents spreading themselves too thin. Setting reasonable goals can help avoid that, but doing so requires taking commitments to one’s employer and family into consideration before agreeing to take on new projects or setting deadlines for projects to be completed. This should be applied to both work and home. If a work deadline is unreasonable, professionals should discuss that with their employers, who might change the deadline or arrange for extra persons to work on the project. At home, parents should avoid taking on too many projects, such as chaperoning a child’s dance or coaching a sports team, if doing so will adversely affect the amount of time they get to spend with their families.
