Cost: Conventional wisdom suggests it’s less expensive to do something yourself than to hire someone else to do it for you, but that’s not necessarily true of home improvement projects. Labor costs typically account for a substantial amount of professionally contracted projects, but homeowners can cut those costs by volunteering to do some of the simpler tasks themselves. In addition, contractors often purchase materials at a much lower cost than individual homeowners because contractors buy in bulk. So while labor costs might be lower on DIY projects, the cost of materials can offset those savings.

FRESHEN UP YOUR HOME FOR THE SPRING SEASON

Give rugs and floors a deep cleaning. Recirculated air may be full of dust and other microscopic particles that end up blowing throughout your home. Also, it’s easy to track in dirt and other materials on your shoes that become imbedded in carpeting. At least once a year, rent or enlist the surfaces of carpet and upholstery cleaners to give floors a thorough cleaning. You may be surprised at how clean and fresh a home looks and smells once rugs and carpets are deep-cleaned. You also can make a dry carpet cleaner using baking soda, corn starch and desired fresh herbs for fragrance. Sprinkle and then vacuum up after a few hours.

Does Your Family Have a Fire Escape Plan? (Family Features) When a home fire occurs, you have very little time to get out. A working smoke alarm doubles your chances of survival, yet more than twenty percent of American homes are without them. Energizer and the International Association of Fire Chiefs teamed up to address this problem by providing vital fire safety information to families. Make a Plan Installing smoke alarms on every level of the home and developing a plan of escape can give your family precious minutes to get out and get to safety. Draw a floor plan of your home and sketch exit routes out of every room. Make sure you have a fire escape ladder long enough to reach the ground from upstairs rooms. MAKE THE MOST OF LIMITED SPACE

Reconsider your furniture. Furniture can make rooms feel cozy, cramped or spacious. For homeowners with limited space in their homes, furniture that also can be used as storage can save space without sacrificing comfort. For the bedroom, choose a storage bed if the quarters are cramped and it’s difficult to find space for two dressers. Such beds also can be used to store bed linens if closet space is limited. Purchase storage ottomans and/or end tables with storage beneath to make living areas feel less cramped.

Q&A Master Gardeners with the

How can I keep my plants from being eaten by Japanese beetles? I lost so much over the last 2 years. How can I prepare or prevent Japanese beetles invading our blueberry bushes and one of our trees?

Japanese beetles are not easy to control. Garden centers sell traps that contain a substance attractive to these pests, but often the traps will attract more beetles to your yard. If you decide to try one, place it at least 30 feet away from your attractive plants, and make sure the prevailing wind blows the trap scent away from your plants.

from Cornell Cooperative Extension,

These beetles are large and slowmoving, so they aren’t difficult to remove by hand. I just push them off the leaf into a coffee can of soapy water. Do this every day, or as often as you can, and damage will be reduced. The presence of beetles attracts more beetles, so you can make a big difference, though it’s time-consuming.

I tried covering my plants one year with nylon netting, sold in fabric stores. I used clothes pins to attach it snugly, but they crawled up inside the netting from the bottom.

THE BENEFITS TO JOINING A LOCAL GYM

Resolving to get healthy is a worthy goal. A healthy lifestyle that includes a nutritious diet and routine exercise can improve quality of life and decrease a person’s risk for various ailments, including diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

In an effort to exercise more, many men and women choose to join local gyms. Such a decision can have a profound impact on efforts to get healthier, benefitting men and women in myriad ways.

Gym members exercise more than non-members. It’s long been assumed that joining a gym motivates people to exercise more often, as few people want to pay monthly membership fees for facilities they don’t use. But researchers at Iowa State University backed up that assumption in a study of 405 relatively healthy adults. Half of the study participants had belonged to a gym for at least 30 days, while half had not been gym members for at least three months. Participants who belonged to a gym exercised an average of 484 minutes per week, greatly exceeding the 150-minutes-per-week minimum recommended by the Department of Health and Human Services. Non-members exercised an average of just 137 minutes per week, with only 18 percent meeting the recommended weekly exercise guidelines.

Joining a gym improves overall health. While common sense suggests joiningagymimprovesoverallhealth, theIowaStatestudyactuallyproved that to be true. The study found that, compared to non-members, gymgoers tended to have lower resting heart rates, higher cardiorespiratory fitness and smaller waist circumferences. Researchers found that those benefits were especially prevalent among participants who had kept their gym memberships for a year or more.

Joining a gym can increase the chances of getting more well-rounded workouts. DHHS guidelines say adults need at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity and should perform musclestrengthening exercises on two or more days each week. Non-members may be able to meet the guidelines for aerobic activity on their own, but the Iowa State study found that only about 20 percent of Americans meet guidelines for strength training. Gym memberships provide access to weights and strength-training machines that non-members do not necessarily have at home, increasing the chances that gym members will enjoy fuller, more well-rounded workouts.

Joining a gym can be a social endeavor. While many people join gyms to get healthy, it’s important that prospective members not overlook the potential social benefits of gym memberships. Exercise classes hosted at local gyms can provide great opportunities to meet like-minded individuals, and such individuals may ultimately become support systems people can lean on to achieve their fitness goals.

DID YOU KNOW?

The U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs estimates that around eight million adults in the United States experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in a given year. Women experience PTSD at a much greater rate than men. Estimates from the USDVA indicate that 10 percent of women and 4 percent of men are affected by PTSD. Instances of PTSD are similarly prevalent in Canada, where the Canadian Psychological Association estimates that around 8 percent of Canadians who experience a traumatic event develop PTSD. Though no one is immune to PTSD, rates of the disorder among combat veterans are significantly higher than the rates among the general population. USDVA reports that one study of 1,938 veterans found that the prevalence rate among Gulf War veterans was around 14 percent, while an older study from the American Psychological Association found that about 30 percent of Vietnam War veterans had PTSD in their lifetime.

Prescription Costs $500 for a Month’s Supply

DEAR DR. ROACH: What can you tell me about a prescription of 145 mcg of Linzess, and why a doctor would prescribe a pill over $500? What are the advantages to taking this? Surely, there must be something less expensive that will provide the same results. -- J.P.

ANSWER: Linaclotide (Linzess or Constella) is a medicine used for constipation, either in people with irritable bowel syndrome or in people with constipation for no particular reason. It works by activating a protein to allow chloride and bicarbonate (along with fluid) into the intestine. Since it is not absorbed into the body, it has few side effects. The major side effect is that it can work too well and cause diarrhea. This is enough of a concern that the medicine is not used in children under the age of 2. There are three different strengths: 72, 145 and 290 mcg.

If you are asking me to defend pharmaceutical pricing, I can’t do that. I very seldom use this medicine because there are so many other options for constipation -- starting with a different diet without using any medicine at all. But in people with occasional constipation despite having a good diet, I usually start with fiber supplements. If those don’t work, I recommend a surfactant such as docusate (Colace), which allows more water to enter the stool. Yet another option would be nonabsorbable substances like polyethylene glycol (MiraLAX and others), lactulose, sorbitol and magnesium. All of these are much less expensive. However, there are still people who don’t do well with any of these less-expensive (and also tried-andtrue) alternatives. Linzess has made a real difference in the lives of several of my patients. It is usually prescribed by an expert (a gastroenterologist) at least in the case of my patients.

Finally, Linzess is roughly $20 a pill or about $500 for a month’s supply in the U.S. without insurance. Some people only need it occasionally and are very willing to pay, even if insurance doesn’t cover it.

UNDERSTANDING CATARACTS

Cataract development: Cataracts tend to form gradually. A cataract may be in one eye or both. It may be possible to slow down the development of cataracts by protecting the eyes from sunlight. Wearing sunglasses that filter out UV rays or regular eyeglasses with anti-UV coating can help. Proper treatment for diabetes and quitting smoking can help reduce risk of cataract development as well.

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR HOME WHEN YOU’RE AWAY

Switch from a traditional lock and key to a lockbox. Individuals who travel frequently can take a page from the realtor notebook and switch from a traditional lock and key lock system to a lockbox. Lockboxes require that a code is entered before a box containing a key can be unlocked. Homeowners who want this added measure of protection don’t even need to put a key inside the lockbox, which typically covers a lock, making it extremely difficult for potential thieves to pick the lock.

NOW HERE’S A TIP! By

• Store kitchen matches wrapped in tin foil to keep them dry when on camping or shing trips. You can also store them in an empty pill bottle if they are the short kind. If you ll paper egg carton cups with dryer lint and drizzle it with wax, you can cut the cups apart and you’ll have small restarters for your camp res. My family does a lot of camping in the summer, and we use these every time. K.R. in Missouri

• To get scorched pan bottoms clean, scrub with sudsy ammonia and rinse well.

• Baby food jars make wonderful organizer containers; most people know that. But you can make a great rst cup from a baby food jar. Screw on the lid tightly and poke holes along one side. Baby can tip and sip, but not much will come out. ey are just the right size for small hands. M.W. in Alabama

• Baby oil can loosen soap scum from shower doors. Apply and bu lightly with a so washcloth. Follow with a shampoo cleaning or just leave as is. It will repel water and smells nice, too.

• To keep shirt collars from absorbing oil and grime, sprinkle with talcum powder while ironing.

UNIQUE WAYS LOCAL BUSINESSES CAN WORK TOGETHER

Change suppliers. Many partnership opportunities can be effective even if they’re less public in nature. Global supply chains were in flux during the pandemic and have yet to return to normal. That makes now a great time for local businesses to reconsider their suppliers. When doing so, look into local suppliers and let it be known that your products are locally sourced. For example, local restaurant owners can highlight the fact that their foods are sourced from local farms and manufacturers. That may impress foodies with a fondness for freshness, and also should reassure customers who want to keep as many of their dollars in the local community as possible.

Bad Service

Last week I took my Tacoma to the new oil change place in [local town]. They offer a free state inspection. The next morning I noticed that one of my hubcaps was missing. I checked the inspection report and this hubcap belonged to one of the wheels they removed, When I checked the other wheel they removed, it was not installed properly. I returned to the location and was told "it sometimes happens" and that they "installed them properly.” If they cannot install hub caps properly I would not trust them to touch my engine. Tacoma hubcaps do not fall off if they are installed properly.

Cemeteries Need Money More Than Flowers

Community Spirit

Thank you to Mike and Luke and their employees and staff at Harding's Furniture Store in Mt. Morris for arranging to transport a donated and much needed lift chair to the Teresa House in Geneseo. Thank you for this generous and helpful action. Welcome to the Genesee Valley and for "jumping in" with your charitable community spirit.

Saved The Runaways!

A few days ago our 2 young dogs pushed their way out of the house and took off like a shot. Within seconds they were a few acres away and out of sight. The next thing we knew there were several vehicles stopped on the road including a contractor who was using their lights to alert other drivers. The dogs were with them and came when we called. I was so busy getting the dogs back to the house, I did not even acknowledge those who helped. So, whoever you are, thank you so much for your role in getting the "kids" back to us. That was a real kindness. Thank you, thank you, thank you and God Bless you!!

Regarding the rant about the maintenance at the local cemtery. Being a caretaker of one, I wondered when the last time they donated was. Most small town cemeteries are struggling to get the funds to mow, weed eat, and for maintenance. People spend big money on flowers. How good are they going to look if you can't see them with the grass taller than the headstones. Please donate to your local cemetery. Your loved ones are there along with veterans.

Annoying Dogs

Living in town can be a challenge during the summer months with loud lawn mowers, weed eaters, power washers, etc. But those sounds are to be expected. My complaint is people who tie their dogs outside for hours on end. The dogs literally bark nonstop. Is there no law against this? It is difficult to enjoy gardening or just simply relaxing and enjoying a conversation with a friend with a dog barking constantly. Why do people do this? It can't be good for the dog and it certainly is annoying to nearby neighbors. Please stop leaving dogs tied outside if they are going to bark all day!

RIDGE’S RESCUE GIVES LOCAL DOGS A SECOND CHANCE AT HEALTH AND HAPPINESS

National Dog Rescue Day is Saturday, May 20th, and I can think of no better way to celebrate than by highlighting an incredible foster-based organization here in Rochester that caters to our favorite canine companions – Ridge’s Rescue, Inc.

KelleyMurthabeganvolunteeringatRochesterAnimalServicesseveral years ago, and she hasn’t stopped since. As an avid animal lover and a big proponent of helping wherever possible, Kelley decided to create Ridge’s Rescue in 2022, a volunteer-run foster-based organization for dogs in the Rochester area.

As a fully volunteer-operated organization, Ridge’s Rescue comprises individuals working together to o er dogs a safe, secure, and loving home. Whether a dog is facing medical needs or behavioral concerns, Ridge’s Rescue works to ensure that each dog has a chance at the life they deserve.

While many of us think of animal rescues as a shelter-based system, Ridge’s Rescue has ipped the script. “ ere’s no brick and mortar, no shelter,” shares Kelley. Each dog is placed in a comfortable and safe home environment while they are being fostered. Most of Ridge’s Rescue fosters come from Rochester Animal Services, and as Kelley shares, each dog has their own medical and/or behavioral needs.

Some dogs have greater needs than others, but Kelley is committed to ensuring each four-legged sweetheart receives the care they need. Because Ridge’s Rescue is completely volunteer-run and operated, all medical costs are covered by the organization itself, volunteers,

costs around $40 per month, dogs can be permanently shielded from the cruel disease.

Ridge’s Rescue and their fosters o en face many hardships that can be devastating for animal lovers out there. However, the joy of watching a dog ourish during their foster placement certainly comes out on top! We o en see before/a er photos when someone gets a haircut or a kitchen gets a full remodel, but seeing photos of a dog upon arriving to Ridge’s Rescue versus when they leave – there are no words for that transformation!

Ridge’s Rescue does not simply rehome a dog. ey allow a dog to be reborn into the life they were meant to have: A life full of belly scratches, cuddles, treats, and ultimately, kindness.

Currently, Ridge’s Rescue has three dogs available for adoption and ten dogs in foster care. Are you interested in getting involved with this amazing organization? ere are several ways to o er your support.

If you would like to be a volunteer, you can help with fundraising events! Ridge’s Rescue regularly hosts events to spread the word about the great work they do and to secure funding to continue their mission. e next event will be held on National Dog Rescue Day – Saturday, May 20th – at Marshall Street Bar & Grill. Entitled “Cornhole for Canines,” the event features a cornhole tournament, ra es, and more!

If you are interested in being considered as a foster home placement, Kelley encourages everyone to reach out through social media (Facebook, Instagram) or via email at hello@ridgesrescue.com. Or consider making a donation or buying items o Ridge’s Rescues’ Amazon wishlist.

Medical costs can escalate quickly, particularly if a dog faces an acute medical emergency that requires surgery or an extended course of medications for treatment. One acute medical emergency that Kelley would like to highlight is heartworm, a deadly but preventable disease. In Rochester, she describes heartworm as an epidemic a ecting dogs coming in and out of the shelter or foster care system.

While heartworm is extremely serious and is fatal for dogs if le untreated, it is completely preventable. “I cannot push enough about heartworm preventatives,” says Kelley. Once a dog gets to the point of heartworm diagnosis, it is a very serious, painful situation sure to cost thousands of dollars for treatment. However, with a medication that

Lastly, spread the word! Whether you decide to follow Ridge’s Rescue on social media or share their mission with your friends and family, every bit of support counts and helps this incredible organization continue their life-saving work for dogs here in the Rochester community.

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM

Just like humans, pets need a combination of physical activity and caloric moderation to maintain healthy weights. Daily caloric needs for indoor cats range from 180 to 200 calories per day. The larger a dog is, the more calories it needs.

Readers Sound O on Dogs’ Front Yard “Gi s”

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have so many thoughts a er reading the letter from the woman with the shared driveway whose neighbor leaves her dog’s poop on her side.

Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340, Avon, NY 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT A VETERINARY DENTAL CLEANING

Monitoring: Throughout the procedure, a pet’s vital signs are monitored and IV fluids are administered to keep the animal comfortable and safe. Before the pet is brought out of anesthesia, dental x-rays also may be taken to check for problems not visible to the naked eye. The pet also will be monitored after anesthesia in the recovery room.

I’m of the opinion that life would be more enjoyable if people learned to meet others where they are. e dog owner clearly doesn’t want to pick up her dog’s poop, and I don’t think checking with an HOA or municipal ordinance will change that. Maybe she has mobility issues. e writer says she and her neighbor “get along ne,” and there’s a LOT to be said for that. If I were her, I would simply buy poop bags and clean up a er the dog. If the neighbor sees her and says something, I would say: “I’ve asked that you pick up a er your dog, but I don’t want that to become a big issue between us because we get along so well. Your friendship means more to me than my taking a few minutes to clean up the driveway.” -- Susan W., via email another reader shares their advice:

I have had this issue several times in the past. I have successfully resolved this issue every time it has come up.

I used a new tool to solve it -- the power of social media. My solution was simple: When I observed an individual allowing their canine to defecate on my property, I announced loudly from my front door that if they did not clean it up, I would locate their property and defecate on theirs as well. I made the same announcement on the neighborhood’s Facebook page.

Aside from the occasional beer can thrown out of a vehicle full of teenagers, we have been at peace. -- Zack in Murieta North

DID YOU KNOW?

Diamond engagement rings are presented as tokens of love and affection during wedding proposals. The majority of first-time brides will receive a diamond ring, with surveys indicating only 13 percent opt for another gemstone. Researchers from Emory University determined that the average price for a diamond ring is roughly $2,500. However, grooms can spend much more. Diamonds have symbolized eternal love for centuries, perhaps since they were first discovered in India more than 2,000 years ago. The ancient Greeks actually thought diamonds were tears of the gods, while ancient Romans believed diamonds were splinters from heavenly stars.

Naples: Sandy passed away on May 13, 2023 at age 79, at home with her family by her side. Born on July 19, 1943 in Watertown, NY to Rev. Willard and Esther Barber, Sandy was predeceased by her grandchild, Grant Stone. She is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Alan Stone; daughter, Teri (Gary) Gedart; sons, Timothy Stone and Michael (Alana Fuierer) Stone; grandchildren, Anne Marie and Kalley Wilkie, Emily Davies, and Henry, William, Owen, Hope, Ethann and Adelynn Stone; great-grandchildren, Harlow Belille and Evren Davies; brother, David Barber; several nieces and nephews; and many dear friends.

Sandy had a very eventful life, but was challenged early at age seven with polio. She decided then to become a nurse and follow in the footsteps of the hospital sta who had cared for her. A er graduating from Ogdensburg High School, she joined the nursing program at Highland Hospital and earned a certi cate as a Registered Professional Nurse. In 1964, a er marrying Alan, she was employed full-time at ompson Hospital in Canandaigua. As responsibilities for Teri, Tim and Mike increased, her career commitment evolved to part-time. en as she scaled back her nursing duties while raising her children, she remained a “lifetime nurse” who was always on call for friends, family and humanity. Once, she was recognized by Delta Airlines for taking quick action to save an unresponsive infant on her ight.

A consummate outdoor enthusiast, Sandy traveled the world with Alan to hunt, sh, camp and explore nature with indigenous people. No matter the journey, people were quick to recognize and appreciate her energy, kindness and ability to work side by side with di erent cultures.

Sandy took pleasure in decorating her home and bringing her surroundings to life with owers and landscaping, as well as sharing her talents for cooking, knitting and sewing with others. In the early days of the pandemic when masks were scarce, she produced many handmade masks for friends and the local doctor’s o ce. She also donated numerous knitted hats to local children in need.

Sandy was also active in team sports throughout most of her life, playing for many years with the Honeoye women’s so ball league and enjoying volleyball, bowling, and doubles tennis. She also loved attending plays, especially when grandchildren were performing; and always took delight in watching her children and grandchildren participate in sports like basketball, soccer, lacrosse, football, volleyball and tennis.

In recent years, she served as a volunteer on the Advisory Board of the Finger Lakes Area Community Endowment at Canandaigua National Bank, helping to facilitate charitable giving in the region. Her commitment to looking out for others built a strong foundation for teamwork in her family’s numerous business and philanthropic endeavors.

Sandy will always be remembered for her zest for life, skillful pursuit of the many passions that brought her joy, and deep caring for all those around her – family, friends and community.

A private family service will be held at Lakeview Cemetery in Honeoye, NY. In lieu of owers, donations in Sandy’s memory may be made to: Hospeace House, P.O. Box 343, Naples, NY 14512.

DID YOU KNOW?

According to Gallup’s 2021 Economy and Personal Finance survey, the average individual in the United States is retiring earlier than many people might expect. Gallup found that the average retirement age was 62, which is two years earlier than the working respondents indicated they planned to retire. Canadians are retiring a little bit later than their American counterparts, as Statistics Canada reports the average retirement age in Canada is just over 63 and a half. The average retirement age is worth noting, as studies routinely find that many working professionals greatest concern about retiring is that they won’t have enough money saved to meet their needs. By recognizing that they may end up retiring earlier than they initially planned, professionals can make a concerted effort to save more money in the years ahead.

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A TEAM PLAYER

The ability to communicate, interact and work collectively with others is both a professional and personal asset. But in certain ways, the reliance on technology has made working as a team more complicated. People have grown accustomed to spending large quantities of time alone working at computers or on phones and tablets, potentially compromising their ability to work directly with others when the need arises.

WAYS ESTABLISHED PROFESSIONALS CAN IMPROVE THEIR RÉSUMÉS

Rather than emphasize what you did, highlight what you plan to do. This means giving greater weight to the expertise that will translate into your new position. Chances are you can find skills that you honed in one or more jobs that translate into credentials that can be used on another. All of the skills mentioned should be relevant to your career objective and not just added to pad the résumé. Therefore, unless your brief stint waiting tables exemplifies how you developed customer service skills, eliminate it.
