STAY SAFE WHEN SELLING YOUR CAR Millions of people across the globe sell their used vehicles each year, and many of those sales go smoothly. But selling to strangers carries some risk, and sellers must consider their safety when putting their vehicles up for sale. Arrange to meet prospective buyers in public. While it can be inconvenient to drive to a public place each time a prospective buyer expresses interest in your vehicle, sacrificing convenience for security is worth the extra effort. Many people would not invite strangers to their homes under typical circumstances, so it makes no sense to do so when selling a vehicle. If possible, invite buyers to meet you in the parking lot of your office. Or if the car you’re selling is not the car you drive to work each day, then arrange to meet with buyers in a mall or grocery store parking lot. Meet buyers with a buddy in tow. There’s safety in numbers, so bring a friend or family member along when meeting prospective buyers. Many buyers won’t pose a threat to sellers, but some may be criminals looking to steal a vehicle or cause harm to sellers who are complete strangers. Criminals are less likely to attack or take advantage of two or more people than one person. And should anything go wrong with a sale, having a witness around to back up your version of sale terms cannot hurt. Let prospective buyers know you want to see some identification. When prospective buyers respond to your ad, let them know you will want to see some valid photo identification before you allow them to take the car for a test drive. Letting prospective buyers know this in advance of meeting them can prevent an awkward, potentially confrontational situation when you meet in person. Don’t be afraid to turn away buyers who seem suspicious. While your goal might be to sell your vehicle as quickly as possible, don’t hesitate to turn away prospective buyers who make you feel uneasy. If they insist on seeing the vehicle, hang up the phone after informing them you intend to contact the authorities.

NYVirtual Academy - a Cyber School That Gives Students a New Chance at Learning BY M AGG I E F I T ZG I B B O N
W
hen COVID-19 caused a worldwide pandemic in 2020, no one ever thought that school buildings across New York state would close. Then, they did. Google Classroom, Zoom, Google Meet, Edpuzzle, Screencastify, Flipgrid and distance learning are just a few methods and strategies that teachers used to connect with students. All of these can be described as online learning. Christopher Harris, Ed.D., oversees a number of programs at Genesee Valley BOCES, including Model Schools, Library Media Services, Distance Learning, School Library System, and a new program launched in the fall of 2021 called NYVirtual Academy. The NYVirtual Academy was born out of a need to serve this population of students, who for many reasons, thrived in a virtual setting. “A few years ago, we researched the possibility of creating an online learning program that would focus on college readiness. Many students who live in this region are the first in their families to attend college. Due to fiscal constraints, the small rural school districts in this region may not have the same college prep courses as larger, more affluent suburban school districts,” Harris said. “We wrote a few grant proposals but then COVID-19 hit. This drastically changed our plan and we transitioned to supporting both remote and hybrid learning.” As the need for a virtual program became more evident from 2020-2021, Harris researched and spoke with superintendents on how this concept could work. “In June and July, we knew that there would be lingering impacts, and discovered that this virtual school concept was definitely a possibility. The Governor and the State Education Department were communicating a ‘return to in-person learning where appropriate,” Harris said. “We knew that some students would not be able to return to in-person learning for a number of reasons, including health conditions, so we got to work. What made this development process work so well was the support of all the school superintendents in this region.” The program launched in the fall of 2021 and grew to an enrollment of 100 students. As of March 2022, there are 125 students in the NYVirtual Academy.
Donna McLaughlin is one of the NYVirtual Academy teachers. She applied to teach at this cyber school for many reasons. “The advisory model was a big part of why I wanted to teach at the NYVirtual Academy. I truly believe in the idea that kids don’t care what you know until they know that you care. In my experience, students who feel safe, heard, and valued by their teachers are more motivated and engaged and, therefore, do better academically,” McLaughlin said. “Being an online learning specialist provides me with a unique opportunity to work with students from all over New York state rather than just one localized school building/area. I have flexibility with my schedule which allows me to have the freedom and opportunity to meet with students 1:1 whenever they need extra support rather than just during after-school hours,” she continued. “I have several students who are facing really difficult, mental/emotional and environmental challenges but are thriving in our program. One student, in particular, is facing a significant number of barriers to success yet she shows up to advisory every morning with a smile and a great attitude,” McLaughlin shared. “This student is on pace in all her classes and earning excellent grades despite working 30-40 hours a week to support herself. She has shared with me that having the option to complete her schoolwork when it fits into her schedule has been critical for her success this year.”
What does the future hold? “I think this program is an amazing example of student-centered learning where kids who don’t fit into the traditional brick and mortar school are provided the chance to engage in the educational experience in a new way,” McLaughlin said. College and career-ready are common words used to describe how schools are expected to prepare students. The NYVirtual Academy does just that and more by providing a culture that fosters learning and teaches students the necessary skills to prepare them for life.
How it works NYVirtual Academy is a full-service educational program for students in grades 6-12. The program provides all instructional components for students including core and elective courses to meet all New York State graduation requirements taught by New York State certified teachers. Each day students are expected to spend 4-6 hours at home dedicated to their course work, and those enrolled in their districts remain eligible for sports and other extracurricular activities. Patrick Whipple, Ph. D. oversees all of the Professional Learning Services (PLS) at GV BOCES, including NYVirtual. “NYVirtual has its inception tied to the COVID-19 pandemic. In the late spring of 2020, Dr. Julie Donlon, GV BOCES Deputy Superintendent, presented the Professional Learning Services Department with a challenge: how can GV BOCES create a service that can meet the demands for virtual learning while taking the burden off of local districts? NYVirtual was the response,” Whipple said. “The PLS Team built the proposal for the program by considering three large, student-focused buckets: effective curriculum, connectedness/mental health, and flexibility.” “Some students and families are just too anxious to attend in-person school at this time—for various health-related reasons. This is the void that NYVirtual Academy fills. Our NYVirtual Academy staff provides the needed academic, social, and caring support to students who really need it right now. This program dismantles many of the barriers our students would have in a traditional brick-and-mortar setting,” Whipple continued.

Veterinarian Wait Times Keep Getting Longer
Jazzmine
16 Bunnell Lane Dansville, NY
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’ve been waiting more than three months to get my dog “Maisie” in for a regular checkup and shots. The veterinarian’s office says they are running behind and had to delay her appointment. Talking to a friend across the country this week, I learned that they are waiting months to get their pets to the vet as well. Is this a national trend? -- Cheryl K. DEAR CHERYL: Unfortunately, it is, especially in major metropolitan areas. The wait for a vet appointment was already lengthening before 2020. After months of waiting, pet owners are all trying to get caught up on checkups and vaccinations. Many more people adopted pets during the lockdown in 2020 to keep them company. And many pandemic restrictions, such as building occupancy limits, are still in place. Add to this a chronic shortage of veterinarians -- an industry that sees some 2,000 vets leaving every year, citing a poor work-life balance. That’s twice the rate of physicians quitting their profession, says the American Veterinary Medical Association. And the lower availability of vet appointments can be seasonal. For large animal vet practices (which deal with livestock, horses, cattle, etc.), spring is their busiest season with calving and foaling taking place. The warm weather reminds pet owners to take their companion pets to the vet as well. Until the wave of catch-up appointments subsides, just be patient. Keep the appointment that is already set with the veterinarian and schedule Maisie’s checkup for next year, if possible. Send your tips, comments and questions to ask@pawscorner.com. PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

Pushing oneself physically can be exhausting and demanding. But whether you’re a seasoned athlete, a part-time fitness enthusiast or even someone who lives a largely sedentary lifestyle, you can find ways to dig down and improve your overall endurance. Many athletes find pushing their bodies past certain boundaries to be empowering. Letting complacency set in is easy, but finding the motivation to press on and push ahead takes mental determination.

DID YOU KNOW? Halitosis, or bad breath as it’s commonly known, can result from any number of factors. While food can be a culprit, some additional factors may be contributing to mouth odor as well. Poor dental hygiene is a particular concern. According to Colgate and the American Dental Association, failure to brush and floss teeth regularly leads to the accumulation of food particles in the mouth. This food can collect bacteria and begin to break down, causing a bad aroma. Dry mouth is another condition that causes bad breath. Without adequate saliva production, particles of food that may cause odor are not swept away regularly. Bad breath also may be an indication of a medical condition elsewhere in the body. Upper respiratory infections and gastrointestinal disturbances may contribute to halitosis.

DEAR DR. ROACH: My partner and I are in
NOW HERE’S A TIP
our 60s, exercise regularly (three to five times per week), eat a well-balanced diet and are of average weight. Recently, we went bowling for two games and found ourselves sore in the area right below our buttocks. We were very sore for several days, making walking difficult, especially up and down stairs. What would have caused this area to get so sore? We named it “bowling butt” for lack of a medical term. -- M.B. ANSWER: Starting a new activity will often cause people to overuse some muscles that aren’t used to the strain. Bowling involves forceful extension of the thigh, which is the gluteus maximus muscle, as well as other muscles in the hip to maintain stability. Two games were enough to exhaust that muscle, and the untrained muscle will often suffer small tears, which take days to heal properly. The fact that you were sore with activities involving thigh extension helps confirm the diagnosis. Some people think it’s lactic acid in the muscle, but that is gone after a few hours. Naming a disease is serious business, and I did a look for similar names in the literature. I did find “Wii butt,” a pain sensation after playing games, including bowling, on the Wii video game system, but none for actual bowling. I’m not sure “bowling butt” will catch on, however.

* Need a patch for old woodwork? Try mixing paint (whatever color you’re using) and flour. Make a paste, fill in the holes and let dry. It’s hard like cement, and can be sanded into shape if necessary. * Use baking soda to scrub away stuck-on food on your grill. Sprinkle it on the metal brush, and scrub away. If your grate is beyond the power of fire and baking soda, remove it and lay it on the ground on some newspaper. Spray with oven cleaner and let sit (keep pets and kids away from it). Rinse with a garden hose and replace on the grill. * When you get near the end of a roll of paper towels, save it to put in your car. Put together a kit with the following items: a small bottle of Windex or other cleaner, a squeeze bottle of water, some wet wipes and the short roll of paper towels. Now you’ll always be ready for a quick on-the-road cleanup. * “I have a plastic cup that changes color when the drink is hot. Oddly enough, it changes at the perfect temperature for my baby’s bath. So, I fill the tub and toss in the cup. When the cup starts to change back to its original color (blue), I know the bathwater is not too hot.” -- P. in Idaho * “To remove muffins or rolls from a pan, set it on an old, damp towel for a minute. The steam must loosen the bottoms, because they just slide right out. I thank my mom for this tip.” -- Janey R. via e-mail * Sprinkle baby powder in dish gloves to help them slide on in an instant.

STAY SAFE WHEN LANDSCAPING Landscaping is typically viewed as a chore by homeowners, many of who enjoy doing some work on their lawns and gardens. But only few homeowners may recognize the potential dangers of lawn maintenance. The Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that more than 230,000 people per year are treated for various injuries resulting from lawn and garden tools. Common injuries include loss of fingers, lacerations, broken and dislocated bones, eye injuries, and burns. Many of these injuries are entirely preventable if homeowners prioritize safety when tending to their lawns and gardens.

Dogs love spending time outdoors. Dog owners with yards know that dogs benefit greatly from some exercise in the backyard. While that time might be great for dogs, it can take its toll on lawns. Dog urine and feces can adversely affect the look and health of a lush green lawn. Nitrogen is essential to healthy soil, but only at certain levels. When those levels are exceeded, the result can be lawn damage. According to The Spruce Pets, an advisory site that offers practical tips and training advices to pet owners, this is what happens when pets frequently urinate on grass. Urine is naturally high in nitrogen, so when pets urinate on lawns, the grass might turn yellow or brown due to the excess nitrogen content. Nitrogen also is present in lawn fertilizers, further exacerbating the problem for pet owners who fertilize their lawns. In addition to urine damage, dogs can trample frosted grass, contributing to problems that may not become evident until spring, and get into areas like gardens where they wreak additional havoc.

Gardeners Are there plants that help with mosquitos? Make your garden work for you in the quest to combat mosquitoes by planting varieties that naturally deter them. Options abound for mosquito-repelling plants, although there’s minimal research to prove they actually work reliably. Thus, you may need to experiment with several to see what might work for you. Popular choices include mint, lemon balm, marigolds, basil, chrysanthemums, eucalyptus, rosemary, lavender, lemongrass, catnip, peppermint, sage, and more. Another strategy is to spread cedar mulch throughout the garden. It offers double benefits by deterring
from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County mosquitoes with its scent and soaks up and retains moisture in the soil. Why are my Cherry tree branches dying? It most likely has Black Knot disease. Black Knot is a disfiguring and potentially lethal disease of trees and shrubs in the genus Prunus. This genus includes stone fruits such as wild, fruit-bearing and ornamental plums and cherries. The disease is present only in the woody parts of trees, occurring most frequently on twigs and branches and sometimes on trunks and scaffold limbs. The warty swellings first become visible in late summer or the following spring
on new shoots. At first the knots are somewhat greenish and corky, but with age they become black and hard. When they occur on twigs and small branches, prune out the infected branches about 4 inches below the knot. On large branches and trunks, the knots can be cut out. This is done most successfully during August when the fungus does not extend far beyond the visible swelling. Be sure to remove any infected branches in the winter if black knot returns after August. Remove the diseased wood and about 1 inch of clean wood around the knot. It is best to remove knots before growth begins in the spring and to take them away from the orchard, as they will continue to produce spores for several weeks after re-
moval. Be sure to destroy infected tissue to limit spread of spores. Unfortunately, this disease is hard to control and might require the replacement with a tree not in that family or susceptible to Black Knot.

DID YOU KNOW? Without pollinators, more than 100 crops grown in the United States would not be able to thrive. Plants, including various fruits, vegetables, nuts and more, rely on pollinators to ensure to transport pollen. Though many plants are self-pollinating and others are pollinated by the wind or water, many others rely on insects and animals to become pollinated. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says birds, bees, bats, butterflies, moths, flies, beetles, and small mammals all can work as pollinators. Examples of crops pollinated by pollinators include apples, squash and almonds. Animals and insects help pollinate more than 75 percent of the world’s flowering plants, and nearly 75 percent of all crops, according to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Unfortunately, pesticide use can diminish the number of natural pollinators. Natural gardening and pest-control can help protect the habitats of pollinators.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Prepare to Age in Place? Been There, Done That I read an article the other day encouraging seniors to make plans to age in place. Aging in place means to stay in our own homes as we get older so we can maintain our independence. Planning for it means making whatever changes are necessary to ensure that our homes are safe. Planning also can include surrounding ourselves with a network of people and services for support. My first thought was ... that’s what we’ve been doing for the past two years, and we certainly didn’t have time to plan for it before COVID sent us all into lockdown. Yet here we are ... we survived. And how did we do that? We created our own little support networks, mostly by phone since our meetings were canceled. We checked in with each other when the store finally stocked long-missing items. We baked and left cookies on the porches of those we knew would appreciate them. We learned Zoom and other online video conference programs so we could have face-to-face meeting with family and friends. We beefed up our computer skills, at least enough to enable us to place togo grocery orders at the store or arrange for delivery and to make purchases that Amazon could bring to our door. We roamed YouTube in search of exercise videos for seniors and took free classes of all types. We took up the scatter rugs that could cause trips and falls because we knew that the EMTs who came to our rescue would be leery of COVID and come through the door fully outfitted in biohazard suits. We dared to ask questions and learned that the library will deliver books and the pharmacy will mail prescriptions. All in all, we survived our forced aging in place just fine. We seniors are a tough bunch. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

NOTABLE AFRICAN AMERICAN MUSICIANS Whitney Houston - With a big voice and personality, Houston was incredibly popular during the 1980s and 1990s. While she is known for many chart-topping hits, her fame reached a new level when she covered Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You” for the movie “The Bodyguard,” in which she also starred. Houston’s version bridged the gap between country and R&B/pop.

Honesty at Work As I was standing in line in a Canandaigua store, a customer ahead of me purchased an item costing $50.00. The cashier picked up only the two $20 bills. The customer picked up the $10 bill and left the store with her item. Moments later the customer came back and paid the remaining amount. She taught my daughter that honesty is always the right thing to do. She did the right thing, and it was definitely noticed. Missing Parts Please beware of thieves who steal catalytic converters from cars parked in public parking spaces next to apartment buildings. It happened to me while borrowing a friend's 2000 Honda Accord. When I parked it on Tuesday, May 3rd, it was purring like a kitten. The next morning, I started it, and it was as loud as an outboard motor. This was in the middle of [local town], a well-guarded suburb. For a thief, this part would net $100-150. For the owner, it will cost $2,300 because of the costly connections and labor for a new catalytic converter. The salvage yards I called all swore they don't deal with catalytic converters. What will they steal next? I suggest using a garage or carport. - Sadder but Wiser Contact Us Why do so many businesses, services and stores even have in their sites a “contact us” form where you can ask a question or make comments? Some give you the runaround just to find the form. Others don’t respond to questions or return an answer. Recently, I submitted one asking a simple question. Nothing. I submitted it a second time, still nothing. I finally went to their competitor and got the answer I was seeking. I’m sure they’ll probably use the COVID excuse. Well, word of mouth carries a lot of weight, especially in a small community. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Event Success! On Saturday, May 14th, the Hygiene Blessings Bank of the Genesee Valley (HBB) held another of its bimonthly hygiene bank events. It was a success, serving several area families and individuals in need. Thank you so much to the many wonderful volunteers who gave their time and energy to make this event possible with everything they do from donating goods to setting up the personal and household cleaning products to assisting guests throughout the event to completing inventory and clean up afterwards. You are all a tremendous blessing, and the HBB is very grateful for your hard work and service. God bless you!
Changing Times Some people live only in the past. Those who believe in no gun control are, I believe, some of those people. When this country was formed, guns were a necessary part of life. Many, if not most, people depended on their guns to provide food for the table and to defend themselves against wild animals. There was also the threat that the country would be attacked by another country. While that is always a possibility, even today, I would have to say that guns would be of little help now since there are much more effective weapons in today’s world. Today, guns are more of a problem in America than a solution. Every day on the news, there are stories of innocent people being killed or injured by guns. Too often, stories tell of mass shootings with young children being the victims.

Carnations One of the most popular choices for sympathy arrangements, carnations of various colors have different meanings. A red carnation evokes admiration while a pink carnation stands for remembrance. White carnations stand for pure love and innocence. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

HOBBIES THAT SUIT A SUMMERTIME VIBE Sailing/boating: Though it might involve a little more physical activity than reading, sailing and/or boating is an ideal summertime activity. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reports that nearly 40 percent of the United States population lives in a coastal area, making boating and sailing an accessible hobby for a significant percentage of Americans. Even those who live far away from the ocean undoubtedly live close to a river or lake. What better way to enjoy warm summer afternoons than on a boat?
3. Gently toss together crabmeat, olives, feta, dill, vinegar, salt, and pepper in medium bowl. Spoon crabmeat mixture evenly into tomato shells and cover with reserved tomato tops. Cook’s note: Scoop the seeds and pulp from the tomatoes into a storage container. Cover and freeze up to 4 months and toss them into a soup or stew.

BE SAFE, HEALTHY AND HAPPY IN THE WORKPLACE WHILE PREGNANT The first thing pregnant working women should know is that they have the right to work while pregnant. In the United States, it has been illegal to discriminate against pregnant women in the workplace since 1978, when the Pregnancy Discrimination Act was passed. But in spite of those laws, some employers may be less receptive to their female employees’ pregnancies, with some insisting they harbor good intentions, such as the woman’s safety. Businesses cannot fire employees for being pregnant, and many courts have ruled that decisions about the safety of the woman and fetus are up to the employee and her doctor, not her boss. On the same token, a company cannot refuse to hire a person simply because she’s pregnant. WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A TEAM PLAYER Listens attentively: In order for a team to function, every member has to listen to what his or her coworkers are saying. This also includes being receptive to criticism without lashing out. Listening can sometimes be more important than speaking.

APPLY BY 5/27/22 • 585-335-2330 EMPLOYMENT: THE NEXT STEP AFTER GRADUATION Graduation is an exciting time in the lives of students. After years in the classroom preparing for life after school, graduation marks a time when students are finally ready to enter the “real world” and land their first professional job. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics advises that earning a college degree can greatly improve a person’s chance of landing a job. The more education a person receives, the lower his or her prospects of being unemployed become. The BLS said that, as of 2014, individuals with a bachelor’s degree could earn on average $1,101 per week, compared to $668 for persons with high school diplomas. Those with bachelor’s degrees had a 3.5 percent unemployment rate compared to 6 percent for those with only high school diplomas. The National Center for Education Statistics estimates that roughly two million students earn bachelor’s degrees each year. Many others will go on to earn master’s or doctorates before entering the workforce. As the economy continues to improve, job prospects follow suit. According to a job outlook from the National Association of Colleges and Employers, employers had plans to hire 8.3 percent more new college graduates in 2015 than in 2014. The growth of businesses and the rising rate of retiring Baby Boomers has spurred employment prospects. Landing a job post-graduation requires diligence on the part of new grads. EMPLOYMENT

RELIEVE STRESS THROUGHOUT THE DAY Stress affects people from all walks of life, and the causes of stress are as varied as the people it afflicts. In its 2017 Stress in AmericaTM survey, the American Psychological Association found that the three most common sources of stress were the future of the nation (63 percent), money (62 percent) and work (61 percent). According to the National Institute of Mental Health, routine stress that becomes chronic can result in a host of negative side effects. Such stress can suppress the immune system, disrupt digestion and have an adverse effect on sleep. But men and women who feel stressed at the end of each day need not resign themselves to sleepless nights and/or weakened immune systems. A proactive approach to alleviating stress during the day can help men and women reduce their stress levels and avoid the negative side effects associated with chronic stress. EMPLOYMENT

DID YOU KNOW? Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts from Money, CNN and The Motley Fool advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.

DID YOU KNOW? According to KidsHealth.org, more than one-third of child injuries and deaths happen at home. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that most incidents at home occur where there is water, such as in the bathroom or kitchen; heat or flame, like in the kitchen or around the grill; toxic substances, like those found in medicine cabinets or beneath kitchen sinks; and in places where kids can fall, such as on staircases.
