On Thursday, May 11, 1922, Dansville Rotary held its first meeting and dinner at the Foster Hotel in Dansville, NY. One hundred years later on May 17, 2022 the Dansville Rotary Club hosted their Centennial Celebration with approximately 100 guests. Club President Amy Pollard hosted the event and welcomed Rotary District Governor, Janet Tenreiro, Rotary Members from Elmira, Geneseo, Wayland, along with representatives from the Dansville Lions Club and Dansville Rotary Club members and their guests. The celebration was held at Nugget Hill in Wayland. After dinner District Governor Janet Tenreiro spoke and James Culbertson read Proclamations from NYS Senator Borello and Assemblywoman Marjorie Byrnes. The Village of Dansville Mayor Peter Vogt also gave a Proclamation. An amazing number of Paul Harris Awards were given out that evening. 11 went to our club members and 2 others were awards to community members who live their lives as a Rotarian would with Service Above Self. Gardeners What is the best way to clean dust off my house plants? There are two main reasons to clean your house plants: aesthetics and health. A layer of dust will limit a plants ability to absorb light, which interferes with photosynthesis and slows growth down. One of the easiest ways to give a houseplant a refresher is to take it into the shower with you. Small plants do well with a quick dip in the sink, but consider bringing in the larger potted plants for a more immersive cleaning. This practice works best if you have a removable showerhead and can adjust the pressure. It is best to keep the temperature lukewarm. You could also use a spray bottle. Another method that works well on large sturdy leaves is to utilizing soapy water and a soft sponge or microfiber cloth. Mix 1/4 tea-

from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County spoon of dish soap with a half-gallon of room temperature water and gentle clean the plant with the sponge or microfiber cloth. When done rise the plant with clean water. When is the best time of the year to prune lilac bushes and grape vines? Grapevine pruning is performed all winter in many large commercial vineyards because this big job requires many hours. The “late dormant period” – FebruaryMarch--is the ideal time to prune, however, because the extent of winter injury to vines can then be determined. If injury has occurred, pruning severity can be adjusted. Pruning can affect the timing of bud-break. That difference may be cause for or prevention of frost dam-

age to buds in the growing season Do not over-prune lilacs. Let the plant develop several branches from the base, instead of only one or two. This allows you to remove stems that have grown too tall, or have been attacked by diseases or insects, and still have flowering wood. Pruning is unnecessary for the first 3 or 4 years. Thereafter, limit pruning to the removal of weaker wood from the center of the bush. This prevents a thicket from developing. You should do this soon

after flowers have fallen. Do not prune in late summer, fall, or winter; late pruning often results in removal of flower buds. Old bushes with runaway growth will need severe pruning. Large single trunks may be cut back to a stump to encourage growth of new stems from the roots. Clumps of overgrown stems may be thinned out about a third a year starting with oldest, weakest, and damaged.

Balancing tires involves equalizing the w eight of the combined tire and w heel assembly so that each tire spins smoothly on the road. Tires are mounted on the w heel assembly, and the chances of this assembly having precise w eight distribution is nearly impossible w ithout a little help. According to Discount Tire, the slightest imbalance in the tires, even as little as half an ounce, can be felt by drivers. Unequal mass can make tires w obble, causing noticeable vibrations. M echanics w ill test tire balance by putting it on a balancing machine. The machine w ill spin the tire and determine the tire’s heaviest point. Counteracting w eights w ill be placed on the tire hubs to create a more uniform balance of w eight. Lead w eights are often used, but some are being phased out for other metals, such as zinc, because of the medical and environmental implications of lead. Tires that are not balanced w ill not only cause vibration, they also can lead to uneven w ear.

Properly m aint ained headlight s vast ly im prove driver saf et y Don’t just replace but upgrade your headlight bulbs. Bulbs that have started to dim need to be repla ced, but auto enthusiasts or maintenance-savvy drivers know they can upgrade their bulbs w hen replacing them. Indu stry experts recommend replacing headlamp bulbs every tw o years, and replacing them in pairs to make sure the vehicle’s lighting is equally balanced. But rather than sticking w ith the bulbs provided by the car maker, look for a bulb that makes it easier to see at night and during hazardous conditions. These headlights put more light on the road, helping to make up for poor w eather, dimly lit roads, aging headlights, and even the loss of n ight vision many drivers experience as they age. Capable of providing up to 100 percent more light than the stan dard halogen bulbs found on the majority of vehicles today, special headlights create a better beam patte rn that is dramatically longer than the standard bulbs, vastly improving driver vision and safety.

Freed slaves played a role in the establishment of Memorial Day. The American Civil War is the deadliest military conflict in American history, as the Union and the Confederacy each suffered more than 800,000 casualties by the time the war ended in 1865. According to History.com, as the war drew to a close, hundreds of Union soldiers who were being held as prisoners of war died and were buried in a mass grave in a Confederate prison camp in South Carolina. After the Confederate surrender, more than 1,000 now-freed slaves honored those recently deceased Union soldiers during a ceremony in which they sang hymns and distributed flowers. The ceremony was dedicated to the fallen soldiers and served as a precursor to what is now celebrated as Memorial Day.

A Message To My Customers: After spending 35 years in the automotive business and meeting a lot of great people, I have decided to shift my focus to my other passion of motorsports. Saturday, May 28th will be my last day at Dansville Chevrolet. That being said, on Tuesday, May 31st, I will be starting the next phase of my career at Maddie’s Motorsports in Dansville. I want to thank everyone who has supported me over the years at the dealership. My customers have always treated me more like a family friend than just their salesman. I will continue to provide the same level of customer service and expertise at Maddie’s, as I have my entire career at the dealership. Feel free to stop in anytime to say hi. I look forward to seeing some of your familiar faces at my new location. Thank you again for all of your business and support. I look forward to seeing some of you soon.

BEAT THE TRAVEL CROWDS THIS MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND Consider a local destination. Another way to beat the crowds is to avoid joining them. The National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration estimates that roughly 40 percent of the American population lives in coastal communities. That means more than 120 million Americans can drive to coastal areas without having to traverse potentially congested highways and interstates. Stay local for busy travel weekends like Memorial Day and reserve longer trips for other times of the year when fewer people are on the road.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We adopted a puppy last month. “Jake” is having some problems adjusting to his new home. He has soiled his own bed three times so far (we crate him at night) and doesn’t make it through the day -- he starts whining by the door around lunchtime and, if we’re not home, will just go anywhere in the house. How can we fix this? -- Carl B., via email

The Purina Pet Care Center found that overweight pets may live two years less than ideal weight pets. Reduced life span is not the only problem, as carrying extra pounds can contribute to various maladies. These include osteoarthritis and poor joint health, type 2 diabetes, ligament injuries, heart and respiratory disease, kidney disease, and cancer.

DEAR CARL: How old is Jake? It sounds like, barring any unknown physical issues or illness, he is a young puppy with a small bladder. He simply can’t hold it as long as a fully grown dog. The fact that Jake makes it a point to whine by the door means that the house training is effective, but you may be waiting much too long to take him out. When he has to go, he will go. That includes soiling his crate, which is an absolute last resort for a dog. Follow this guideline, published by the American Kennel Club, called the “month-plus-one” rule: Take your puppy’s age in months, and add one. That gives you a rough estimate of the maximum number of hours Jake should wait before going outside to pee or poop. For example, if Jake is four months old, add one to that number. The total, five, means he should be taken outside every five hours. Every puppy is different, so Jake may need to go out a little sooner. And yes, that means he may need to go out in the middle of the night, or on a pee pad. He should always be taken out just before bedtime and first thing in the morning, regardless of his age.

Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340, Avon, NY 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS. ●

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Walk Faster, Live Longer

We’ve known for years that walking is a good form of exercise for seniors ... we just didn’t know why. Now a new study not only explains how it works, but why brisk walking is even more effective. Ten years ago, researchers at Leicester University Biomedical Research Centre started looking at genetic data in the biobanks in the U.K. for clues about why seniors who walk seemed to live longer. They didn’t fool around with a dozen or so participants. No, they analyzed the information of over 405,000 people. And now we know: It’s the telomere length. Telomeres (aka leucocyte telomere length, or LTLs) are the “end caps” on strands of DNA, the building blocks of our bodies and an indicator of our biological age. Fast walkers have longer LTLs, and therefore better health ... and longer lives. That same study showed that as little as 10 minutes per day of brisk walking can equate to longer lives. (The Mayo Clinic prefers 30 minutes of activity per day, possibly broken into three 10-minute sessions.) The best walking pace appears to be 3 mph, although the research data was from wearable tracking devices like those we use to measure steps per day. But there’s more. A study at the National Institutes of Health concluded that the length of the telomeres is positively associated with consuming fruits, dairy, 100% fruit juice and coffee. On the other hand, food and drinks with high amounts of sugar and red meat can negatively affect the telomere length. The study gave a big thumbs up to the Mediterranean diet, with loads of nuts, fruits, vegetables, unrefined cereals, fish and olive oil. If you invest in a pedometer to measure your steps, be sure to look for one that tracks your speed. Ask your doctor about any recommendations they have for the trackers. CHOCOLATE CARDAMOM TRUFFLE CAKE

IMPROVE OVERALL ENDURANCE Pushing oneself physically can be exhausting and demanding. But whether you’re a seasoned athlete, a part-time fitness enthusiast or even someone who lives a largely sedentary lifestyle, you can find ways to dig down and improve your overall endurance. Many athletes find pushing their bodies past certain boundaries to be empowering. Letting complacency set in is easy, but finding the motivation to press on and push ahead takes mental determination.

Serves 10 to 12 Amaretti Base 5 ounces amaretti 1/2 stick (4 tablespoons) unsalted butter 5 tablespoons sugar Cardamom Truffle Filling 2 1/3 cups heavy cream 4 to 6 green cardamom pods, lightly bruised to open them 25 ounces dark chocolate (60-70% cocoa solids), grated 1/2 stick (4 tablespoons) unsalted butter, cubed 4 tablespoons chocolate liqueur Cardamom Cocoa Sugar 3 green cardamom pods 1/4 cup sugar 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa 1 10-inch cake pan with a removable base, base and sides lined with nonstick parchment paper To make the amaretti base, finely crush the amaretti in a food processor or put them in a plastic bag and crush with a rolling pin. Melt the butter and sugar in a pan over low heat, then stir in the amaretti crumbs. Press the mixture evenly over the base of the prepared cake pan and refrigerate for 20 minutes. To make the cardamom truffle filling, put the cream and cardamom pods in a pan and heat until almost boiling. Remove from the heat and set aside to infuse for 20 minutes. Meanwhile, put the chocolate and butter in a saucepan. Strain the infused cream through a fine strainer onto the chocolate (the cream will be warm enough to melt the chocolate). If it doesn’t melt, warm over very low heat, stirring occasionally, but do not allow to boil. Stir in the liqueur, then set aside until almost cold, but not set. With an electric mixer, beat the chocolate mixture for a couple of minutes - this will give the cake a lovely airy texture. Pour onto the amaretti base. Let cool, then cover and refrigerate for at least 6 hours, or up to 48 hours before serving. To make the cardamom cocoa sugar, remove the black seeds from the papery cardamom pods and put the seeds in a spice grinder with the sugar and cocoa. Grind to a powder. Carefully remove the cake from the pan and peel off the lining paper. Set on a chilled serving plate and sift the cardamom cocoa sugar evenly over the top. Serve immediately, cut into very thin slices.

HOMETOWN PHOTOS

What were you thinking?! I was backing out of a parking space at a local grocery store. Half way out, a lady with a cart walks right behind me. Of course, I hit my brakes. Then, she has the nerve to yell at me to watch out. Wait, I’m in motion, and you kept walking. What were you thinking? Why, if anything happened, would I would be at fault? No matter how careful I look around and how slowly I’m backing out, you still walked behind a moving vehicle.

S E V RA Thank you! Thank you to the kind person who returned my butterfly cane to the lost & found on Friday, May 13th at the Geneseo Walmart. Cookie I want to express my heartfelt gratitude and thanks to all of the people who helped me look for my dog "Cookie" on Sunday, May 15th. She accidentally got loose in Batavia near Centennial Park and took off like a rocket. Thanks for the help, chicken snacks, kibble, and supportive comments. If you're looking for kind neighbors and amazing people, there's no need to look any further than Batavia! My helpers ranged from small children to mature adults and everyone in-between, walking along the streets calling out for Cookie! This story has a happy ending. Miraculously, I found Cookie a couple hours later. She was worn out, but otherwise, she was fine! Thanks again to everyone for all of your help. God Bless you! A Very Special Thank You! To my little buddy, and my big buddy, my Father, and my Grand-dad. They both served honorably, James C. Marsh, aka Cactus Jack, in the US Navy, during WWII, mostly in the Atlantic fleet. And my Father prepared to be shipped over as a medic in the US Army during the Vietnam war. So thank you for ending that. I love my Dad. A salute to my uncle Mike and my cousin, Rick. Bless you and yours to all those that serve honorably in our armed forces, law enforcement, and the medical field. Be well & many better tomorrows!

Buddy Shoppers Buddy shoppers helping: It’s a very wonderful thing you’re doing, shopping for the elderly who can’t get out. But please respect them and wear a mask. You don’t know if you are sick without symptoms. You could be sick. Even if they are vaccinated, they still could get very very sick and hospitalized due to numerous medical problems. Many of those elderly people think it’s safe for them now to unmask. But it’s really not. Just top off the wonderful thing you’re doing by respecting them and masking up. I know some of those Shoppers who have gone in without masks numerous times. It’s their space; respect it please. My friend had a buddy Shopper like this, and she said he wasn’t masking up, so she had to cancel him for her safety. Chicken Shortage? Wow, what’s next? Ready? The local grocery store had a sign: “No rotisserie chickens due to tornado in Kentucky.” Really? Chickens must be raised only in Kentucky. Don’t farmers raise chickens in New York State, too? Local stores can’t buy from local farms anymore? These excuses never end! Gas Prices There is way too much stupidity in Government. Add ethanol to the pumps to “help” the fuel crisis? Ethanol ruins conventional engines that are not designed for that fuel additive. Ethanol reduces mileage and creates more pollution. It’s funny: the plan to reduce tax on gas begins in June, but since the announcement, look how high prices have risen. Sure, the way it’s going, anything will help. It’s sort of like giving you a quarter back on a hundred dollar purchase.

The first recorded road trip across the U.S. began in 1903 with a bet. Someone bet Horatio Nelson Jackson (a physician and automobile pioneer) that he could not travel from San Francisco to New York City in less than 90 days. Accompanied by mechanic Sewall K. Crocker and a dog named Bud, they set off in a 20-horsepower Winston to prove them wrong. Despite numerous mishaps, Jackson and Crocker completed the trip in 63 days.

DESIGN A GARDEN FOR ALL SENSES The lively sounds of the garden are created by the wildlife that come to pollinate and enjoy the environment gardeners have created. By choosing indigenous plants, gardeners can be sure that insects and small critters will seek refuge within the foliage. Songbirds also will add character to a yard. The Audubon Society suggests including a water source and a songbird border of shrubs along your property’s edge. Provide food sources and make sure they are located a fair distance from the main action of the yard so as not to scare off birds. Wait for musical chickadees, goldfinches, orioles, and cardinals to arrive and enjoy the accommodations.

DID YOU KNOW?

Volunteering is a great way for individuals to strengthen their communities, but it also can be a unique way for individuals to improve their own overall happiness. A 2020 study published in the Journal of Happiness Studies examined 70,000 participants, each of whom received surveys that asked questions regarding their volunteering habits and mental health. The study found that, when compared to those who did not volunteer, people who had volunteered in the previous 12 months were more satisfied with their lives and gave their overall health higher ratings. The frequency of giving back to one’s community also may affect just how much volunteering affects mental health. Study participants who volunteered at least once per month rated their mental health even higher than those who volunteered but did so infrequently.

Finding time to read more may be difficult during spring, summer and fall, when parents must contend with their own hectic schedules as well as their children’s. Even individuals without children or empty nesters may find it difficult to carve out time to read in a typical day. Lest We Forget BY DP DUNN

M

emorial Day is often heralded as the unofficial start of summer; yet its origin, traditions and intentions are far more profound and meaningful.

Memorial Day has its roots in Remembrance Day celebrations which began after the War Between the States. Families reflected on the loss of their fathers, sons, cousins, and neighbors. It was a solemn day set aside to pause and reflect on war, service to the nation, and the losses incurred during a long and difficult war. Remembrance Day was later called Decoration Day, and its popularity and practice grew after World Wars 1 and 2 resulting in every state practicing some formal date of remembrance for the nation’s fallen warriors. In 1968, the US Congress instituted the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, moving the celebration of Memorial Day to the last Monday in May. The United States Department of Veterans Affairs cites the purpose of Memorial Day thus: “Memorial Day, which is observed on the last Monday of May, commemorates the men and women who died while in the military service. In observance of the holiday, many people visit cemeteries and memorials, and volunteers often place American flags on each grave site at national cemeteries. A national moment of remembrance takes place at 3:00 p.m. local time.” While is it always appropriate to thank an active duty member of the armed forces, and living Veterans, for their service, Memorial Day belongs specifically to those members of the US military who have died while serving their nation. We thank them through our recollection of their sacrifice to keep us safe and free. Meet PFC Ray Bowman, born in Rochester on April 2nd, 1924. He was the fifth of seven Bowman children. They were a lively bunch. Ray served in D Company of the 23rd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. Ray was a machine gunner. On Tuesday, April 10th, 1945, Ray wrote this letter home: Dear Mom, How is my favorite Mom? I know you are wondering why you don’t get more mail from me but you can see from the papers we are moving fast and there is hardly even time to wash anymore. This is sure a strange war and right now it is for the better for we are motoring [motorized?] Yesterday we freed quite a few Americans, English, and Russians in a rotten prison camp. The Americans and in Jan [?] had walk [sic] 500 miles from near Poland and they had less than nothing to eat. They were so thin and sick the Germans could not take them back with them. I often wondered about Ray S. and some of the other fellows I know. I sure hope we find them soon. The Russians were slave workers and were mostly women. Oh boy what a celebration we had last night. We are far away from there now tho. On the average I’ve had 2 hours of sleep per night for two weeks now.

We had a radio for tonight and it is swell to hear music again. Gosh sometimes I get so homesick for all those things that I left behind. You should have seen the me after 4 days of no washing. I still have not taken all the dirt off. It’s now one o’clock in the morning, Mom and chow is at 5:30 so guess I’ll hit the hay. Please send me a fruit cake when you can. Love, Ray Eight days later, PFC Raymond J. Bowman died in Leipzig, Germany. Ray was 21 years and 17 days old. This is why we celebrate Memorial Day. Because we cannot thank Ray in person for his sacrifice. He served, and we benefitted as we still do today. Meet 1st Lt. Hiram Appelget of the 95th Bomber Squadron. Lt. Appelget was killed in action on March 1st, 1943. Steven Appelget said of his great uncle, “[Hiram, or ‘Hi’] was a pilot of a B-26 Marauder – the ‘Barrelhouse Bessie’,” Steven said. “When I started seriously working on family history, I made up a slogan for our family: ‘We showed up’. [Hi] showed up. He wasn’t looking for a big military career or even to ‘whup’ the [enemy]. He had a job to do, and he did it – and complained about the food and the conditions along the way. He had a ship to fly and guys to watch out for. And that’s what he did. He showed up.” Hi and Ray both showed up. They both did their jobs. Neither wanted to be a hero. Neither, I imagine, woke up that particular morning expecting to die. Although, when serving in combat, that is a constant possibility. These men made choices to serve their nation. Many served in non-combat positions, and all accepted the risk willingly for home, family, and nation. It is estimated that approximately 1,304,702 men and women have lost their lives serving in the United States military, in armed conflicts, since 1775. That’s one million three hundred four thousand seven hundred two reasons to say a profound and sincere “Thank You!” this Memorial Day. They all ‘showed up’, did their jobs, and gave their lives, and we are in their debt. Remember Hi, Ray and the many others this Memorial Day. Set an alarm for 3pm. Say a prayer for the repose of their eternal souls if you are so inclined, but at least have awareness and gratitude towards all of these departed men and women who will not be marching in any parades, tipping a beer with you, shopping, fishing, camping, playing ball, boating, gardening, or grilling. That’s exactly why we celebrate Memorial Day.

RECOGNIZE AND AVOID YOUTH SPORTS INJURIES Children benefit in various ways from their involvement in youth sports. Being part of a team fosters feelings of belonging, inspires collaborative play and strategy and can be an excellent form of exercise. Still, despite the benefits, parents often worry about the injury risk their children face on the playing fields. Those fears are justified. A Safe Kids Worldwide survey of emergency room visits found that a young athlete visits a hospital emergency room for a sports-related injury more than a million times a year, or about every 25 seconds. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says more than 2.6 million children 0 to 19 years old are treated in the emergency department each year for sports- and recreation-related injuries. Some of the more common injuries young children face have to do with the skeletal and muscular systems of the body. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons stresses that children’s bones, muscles, tendons, and ligaments are still growing, making them more susceptible to injury. Fortunately, with some education, many youth-sport injuries can be prevented.

HOW TO OVERCOME WORKOUT FATIGUE Use proper form when exercising. Improper form can lead to injury and/or muscle fatigue. Men and women who cannot adhere to proper form when working out may need to reduce the amount of weight they’re lifting. As activities are performed using proper form, people may find they’re building muscle without growing fatigued. As workouts progress, weight can be added.

191 Main St., Dansville, NY 14437 • 585-335-6170 Ways to Become More Active Every Day In addition to working toward at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week, it’s important to avoid being sedentary, when possible. You can do that by making choices that build activity in your day. Some examples include: • Taking the stairs • Printing to the printer farthest away from your desk at work • Getting off the bus or subway one stop early • Parking in the farthest space from the door • Walking around while you are on the phone or having walking meetings

Blood Thinners Preclude Some OTC Pain Meds

Lakeville

---

3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am on blood thinners, so I am unable to take ibuprofen or naproxen for pain. Do you know of anything I can take to help with pain? -- K.B. ANSWER: The body has two ways of clotting blood: the blood clotting factors and platelets, which are special blood clotting cells. Warfarin (Coumadin), like newer agents such as dabigatran (Pradaxa) or rivaroxaban (Xarelto), work as anticoagulants, blocking proteins that help clot the blood. They don’t actually “thin” the blood; that would mean a change in viscosity. Clotting factors are needed for a mature, effective blood clot. Aspirin and NSAID drugs, like ibuprofen or naproxen (Aleve and others), affect platelets, the specialized blood cells that start clotting the blood when necessary. If both the platelet system and the factor system are decreased due to medication (or underlying clotting disorder), then the risk for abnormal bleeding goes up. This does not mean people can never take aspirin or NSAIDs if they are on a medication to reduce clotting risk, but it does mean that a careful evaluation must be done, based on a person’s unique circumstances, to determine the safety of doing so. In other words, your doctor should be able to tell you how often, if ever, you can take these over-the-counter pain relievers. If you can’t take any, then acetaminophen (Tylenol) is usually the safest bet. However, too much acetaminophen can increase the effect of warfarin (measured by your INR level). ***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2022 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

KIDS AND SLEEP School-aged children are busier than ever before, and some may be sacrificing sleep to accommodate their lifestyles. The National Sleep Foundation says school-aged children need between nine and 11 hours of sleep each night to function at a healthy level. Sleep deprivation can be linked to a host of health ailments, including issues affecting the development of the brain. Growing evidence suggests that lack of sleep can cause disturbances in metabolic rates that could affect the risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. A recent study from Johns Hopkins University found that, for each additional hour of sleep a child gets, the risk of that child becoming overweight or obese decreases by 9 percent. Children who slept the least, according to the research, had a 92 percent higher risk of being overweight or obese compared to children with longer sleep duration. The NSF adds that poor or inadequate sleep can lead to mood swings, behavioral problems and cognitive problems that impact kids’ ability to learn in school. To promote good sleep habits in children, parents and other caregivers can establish consistent sleep/ wake routines; ensure children avoid excess caffeine, particularly late in the day; create a cool, dark sleep environment; keep televisions and other media devices out of bedrooms; and help children work through stressors that may impact sleep.

WORKPLACE GIFTING ETIQUETTE: GET GIVING RIGHT Gift giving in the workplace can be challenging territory to navigate. And as anyone who has received an inappropriate gift or something that really wasn’t useful can attest, he or she probably doesn’t want to face a situation in which a gift leads to office gossip. According to a poll conducted by Harris, around half of workers plan to gift at least one business associate around the holidays but are confused about what to give. Too often it’s up to workers to navigate these etiquette minefields on their own, but the following tips can help the process go smoothly. Keep it impersonal. Impersonal doesn’t mean it’s acceptable to grab anything off the shelf. But the gift should not be something that would offend tastes or sentiments. Avoid clothing, perfume, jewelry, or accessories. Lotions and other scented items are also ill-advised. Skip your boss. Etiquette experts say that gifts should flow downward not upward in the realm of employment ranking. That means it’s best to stick with gifting colleagues who are on the same level as you. Buying a gift for the boss may look like you’re simply trying to score brownie points instead of offering a meaningful gift. Give group gifts. Rather than gifting individuals, it can be safer to give a group gift from which many can benefit. This can include coffee and pastries from a nearby bakery, or a bouquet of flowers to brighten up the office environment. Keep prices modest. Office giving is not about illustrating who can afford the most expensive gift. Remember, some people will not be able to reciprocate, and they shouldn’t feel uncomfortable for being on the receiving end of a lavish gift. Follow the rules. Gift exchanges should be cleared with supervisors or human resources professionals. It pays to check if there are rules in place for gifting others. Avoid cash gifts. Giving cash or checks is not a good idea. Money should only come by way of bonuses from higher-ups. If you’re stuck on what to give, a gift card to a store that a coworker visits is acceptable. DID YOU KNOW? Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts from Money, CNN and The Motley Fool advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.
