The luxury of all summer’s sweet sensation is to be found when one lies at length in the warm, fragrant grass, soaked with sunshine, aware of regions of blossoming clover and of a high heaven filled with the hum of innumerous bees.
Many people need not travel far for a little summertime fun, as many communities host fun events throughout the warmer months.

Simplify vacations and savor the fun
Use a travel agent. Using a travel agent to plan your vacation can remove any stress and anxiety you may feel when planning a trip and juggling the responsibilities of everyday life. Many people choose to book their own trips as a cost-cutting measure. What they don’t realize is that travel agents may be privy to special deals and perks they can pass on to customers. These agents also know the ins and outs of certain resorts and locales. Leaving the legwork in their accomplished hands means all you have to do is show up with your reservations instead of pouring over the minutiae of planning.

THE HIDDEN BENEFITS OF WATER
Water helps the gastrointestinal tract. Water can help maintain normal bowel function. When the body lacks sufficient fluid, the colon will pull water from stools in an effort to stay hydrated. That can lead to constipation, a condition in which people experience difficulty emptying their bowels. By drinking enough water, people can ensure their colon will not have to pull water from stools to stay hydrated, thereby helping them stay regular.

Gold Standard Publication National Award Winning Paper
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
By Keith Roach, M.D.
Possible Heart Disease Symptoms Are Written Off Due to Weight
DEAR DR. ROACH: I’ve been experiencing pain in my chest, dizziness and shortness of breath on exertion. The chest pain lasts for a few hours. At one point, it was so bad that I couldn’t walk a hundred feet, had to use a cane and severely limit my physical activity. I’ve been to the doctor about this before. They take an EKG, which comes back normal, so they chalk it up to anxiety, then tell me I’m fat. (I am not unaware that I’m fat, but even when I was doing intense martial arts twice a week, I couldn’t lose the weight. And my physical therapist told me not to do yoga.)
If it makes a difference, I’m also a Type 2 diabetic and have fibromyalgia as well as PTSD. This is not the only issue that doctors have refused to treat because they decide to blame it all on my weight. My diabetes went unchecked for a while because my doctor only told me to lose weight, instead of ordering blood tests when I complained about the symptoms. When these symptoms happen, my friends tell me to go to the doctor, but they don’t do anything to change the situation. Why should I pay over $1,000 and waste a few hours for an urgent care visit and an EKG only to get told that I’m fat and anxious, when I can cover my chest with stickers, play on my phone and tell myself I’m fat at home for free? Who’s right, me or my friends? -- S.T.
ANSWER: I am very sorry to hear how poorly you are being treated. I have heard from many people that doctors do not take symptoms seriously in people who are overweight or obese. (There is strong evidence that this is true, and that women and people of color are also treated worse systemically. People with any mental health issue, such as anxiety or PTSD, are often disbelieved.)
While I understand that you are frustrated, your symptoms are very concerning. Particularly if you are over 50, they are highly suggestive of heart disease -- especially in a person with diabetes, which increases risk of heart disease. Given your poor experience, how much you are paying and your PTSD, I can absolutely understand why you are reluctant to go. However, you deserve to get good care, and I believe you will be able to find a doctor who can treat you well and not automatically write off any complaint due to your weight and anxiety. I’d recommend you be completely honest about your concerns.
When I have a patient with multiple ER or acute care visits for possible heart disease, I often recommend a more definitive test than an EKG and blood testing, which is the usual acute care evaluation when looking for damage to the heart muscle. This may be a coronary CT angiogram, which is highly sensitive and specific. (The weight limit for this test depends on the scanner, but is typically 450 pounds.)
If you have blockages in your heart causing your recurrent symptoms, it needs to be treated to prevent a heart attack. If blockages aren’t the cause, the EKGs usually aren’t helpful, and you’ll need a different type of evaluation to find out where these symptoms are coming from.

HOW TO SUPPORT A LOVED ONE WITH CANCER
Don’t forget to have fun. A cancer diagnosis is serious business, but caregivers and patients must make room for levity throughout the treatment process. The ASCO recommends caregivers make time for light conversation and humorous stories. This can be beneficial to both patients and caregivers, providing a routine respite from discussions about how patients are feeling. Discussions about topics other than cancer, such as sports, movies or hobbies, also can be a respite from the rigors of treatment and caregiving.

THE BUZZ FROM BELOW
BY JAMIESON R. STEELE, VOLUNTEER AT THE NATIONAL WARPLANE MUSEUM
Within a 50 mile radius of Geneseo, I’m guessing half the residents have never been to the National Warplane Museum, and half of that half have never heard of us. ey may have heard our planes and know of the air shows, but there is much more going on down that dusty road.
With 5,000 feet of grass runway, we are an airport. No tower, no lights, no radio, but we are on the map. From WWI replicas to Cobras and Chinooks, all sorts of aircra y at our eld, part of the Wadsworth farm. In the hangar is an astonishing variety of aircra , many owned by private individuals or groups of owners, and most are from the WWII era. ere are several non- ying planes outside as well.
e large hangar is a great venue for events like the Air Force ROTC graduation (pinning ceremony), where cadets are accepted into the service and their 2nd Lt. bars are pinned on their shoulders. We also hosted the ceremony for Geneseo’s Alpha Company of the NY Army National Guard, deployed to a post in Africa. As though planned, the Museum’s crown jewel, Whiskey-7, returned from an away event just as the ceremony closed, a rich reward for all.
e Queen of our eet, Whiskey 7, or just W7, a WWII C-47, is a transport airplane. Not just any C-47, ours was the lead plane of the 2nd wave taking paratroopers into France on the dark eve of D-Day. In 2014 our museum ew W7 back to France for the 70th anniversary of D-Day, passing through Maine, Greenland, Iceland, and into Scotland, a several days’ trip. To top it o , we located the last man alive who jumped out of W7 on D-Day, and Leslie P. Cruise Jr. met our team there, and ew in his old plane over his drop zone 70 years later, this time in daylight with no one shooting at him. Sadly, we lost Les a bit more than a year ago.
, written by Ruth Henry, performed in the hangar several times. In July, the Rochester Area Community Foundation sponsored a free admission day at the museum, which was well
We o en host a gamer group with an event they call War Games Among the Warbirds, with game boards simulating war time action. We host a Fly In breakfast and local VFW chapters’ BBQs. We end our year with a Veteran’s Day ringing of the bell, a reading of ‘In Flanders’s Field,’ and the playing of ‘Taps.’ Many of these events are open to all. Groups such as Rotary, Lions, American Legion, and school and Scout groups meet at the museum, also touring the displays and airplanes.
We have ‘rides days’ when folks can buy seats in various aircra (Great Father’s Day surprise!) mostly done via our web page. We o en combine a rides day with reenactors on the eld in period uniforms and gear, known as Living History Day.
Our annual Air Show in June features a tremendous lineup. e ground shakes as jets thunder in, and spectators gasp watching world champion yers performing acrobatic maneuvers overhead. Also, mark your calendar for Sept. 23 for W7’s 80th Birthday Bash. Don’t miss it! ere will be food, a swing band, lots of ying, fun, and the Living History Day too! Be a part of it.
Model airplane clubs of various sorts frequent the elds to y their models. Some models are rubber band propelled, some are gliders, or have small motors. Many of the groups have dinner or stop by our hot dog shed we put up for various events.
You may see rockets roaring to 9,000 feet and oating down on a parachute. e MARS rocket society is on the eld several times a year. is is not just for fun. Some are involved as students of science, and there are awards and school credits. ey communicate with our active runway movements and follow strict FAA rules.
Last year we hosted the sold-out Glenn Miller Orchestra concert, and folks showed up dressed in ‘40s costumes for swing dancing. e United Way gala and a few weddings have also been held in our hangar. A very moving play based on a WWII diary,
When you visit us, go inside W7, an actual WWII combat aircra . You can also book a ride in her or several other planes. Check the website nationalwarplanemuseum.com or call the o ce (open Wed-Sun 10-3pm) at 585-243-2100 for more information. e Museum is run by volunteers (with one part-time employee), and we need more, so come on down to see what you can add to the team.

I winter over amaryllis bulbs. This year the four I planted all have tall, beautiful, greens but no flowers came. If I keep them might they bloom nextyear?
While people often treat them as annuals, you can get amaryllis to rebloom next year.As flowers begin to fade, cut them off to prevent seed formation.Allowing seeds to form depletes energy resources and can lead to reduced blooming in subsequent years. Wait to remove the flower stalk until it begins to yellow. The flower stalk can photosynthesize (like leaves) and create energy/food stored for future flower growth.Leave the amaryllis leaves. As with other bulbs, like tulips and daffodils, the

leaves create energy/food so the plants can bloom again.
After your amaryllis is done blooming, place it in a bright indoor location (a window with southern exposure is best). Water regularly and fertilize monthly with an all-purpose houseplant or indoor plant fertilizer (follow the directions on the label).
Amaryllis can be taken outdoors after frost risk. Place them in an area that receives filtered sunlight at first, and then gradually move to where it will get a minimum of six hours of sunlight a day. Continue to water and fertilize as needed. In the fall, bring the amaryllis indoors before the first frost.

ways to help brought to you by:
For amaryllis to rebloom, they need to be exposed to cool temperatures for a period. This can be done by forcing your plants into dormancy by placing them in a cool (45 to 55°F), dark location. The bulb needs a resting period of approximately 8-12 weeks before it can bloom again. During this time, do not water the plants. Once the leaves yellow, they can be removed.
While in this resting period, periodically inspect the bulbs. If they begin to grow, place them in a sunny window. If they don’tstarttogrowontheirown, forcenew growth by watering the soil thoroughly and putting them back in a warmer, sunnylocation.Whenbulbsshowsignsof growth, resume watering and fertilizing. Flowers will usually develop about 4-6 weeks after this dormant period.
The role small businesses play in thriving local communities cannot be overstated. Vibrant downtown areas that feature independently owned shopping, dining and entertainment options help distinguish communities from surrounding towns and generate tax revenue that is ultimately funneled back into the community.
Only time will tell if the Delta variant puts more small businesses in jeopardy. In the meantime, residents can embrace four unique strategies to help locally owned establishments stay afloat.

Offer pro bono professional expertise. Successful professionals can help small business owners by offering their services free of charge.
Help small businesses strengthen their digital presence. Individuals with web design and e-commerce experience can help small businesses revamp their websites and improve their online shopping offerings.
Support legislation that benefits small businesses. Many small businesses would not have survived the pandemic without government assistance programs.
Spread the word. Share stories about positive interactions with a given business using social media platforms.
There’s a great deal individuals can do to support small businesses as they continue to recover from and confront the COVID-19 pandemic. Grow

Shame on man who cussed out preschool child
On Saturday afternoon, 6/17/23, shame on the man who abruptly stopped his blue 4 door sedan in [a parking lot] across from [fast food restaurant] to cuss out a child. The man exited his car, opened the driver side rear door to shout obscenities at what appeared to be a pre-schooler strapped into a car seat in the back. The man then grabbed the child’s drink and threw it on the ground. Then he called the child a disgusting name, slammed the door, and proceeded to take off in the car at about 50 mph in the mall lot. Shame on you as an adult to act like that to anyone, much less a child. Still shocked by this unacceptable behavior! :O
Ridiculously Rough Railroad Tracks
Who’s responsible for repairing rough railroad tracks… the railroad, the town, the county? This well traveled rural road has tracks in front of the railroad and you have to just about stop to TRY to save your vehicle from the wear and tear. Recently, other tracks around this area were repaired and they’re smooth sailing now. Somehow this set was skipped over, and in my opinion, these were worse than the others. Anybody know whose responsibility it is for the repair?

DID YOU KNOW?
Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arriveintheblinkofaneye.Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts from Money, CNN and The Motley Fooladvisethatfinanciallysolvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.

PAW’S CORNER
By Sam Mazzotta
Beware of Some “Natural” Flea and Deworming Treatments
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I want my dog to be healthy and to use natural treatments as much as possible. So I don’t like giving her conventional, mainstream ea and tick chewables or making her wear a chemical-laced collar. And if I have to deworm her, I don’t want to give her medications that carry a risk of side e ects. But I’m also seeing a lot of products that are touted as “natural” that contain ingredients that are pretty questionable -- like garlic tablets for dogs! (Garlic is toxic to dogs and cats, if you’re wondering.) Can you let your readers know that it’s very important to read the labels and make sure a natural supplement is actually safe? -- Rebecca in Winchester, Virginia
DEAR REBECCA: You told them, and I thank you. Many “natural” ea and tick preventatives exist today, but reading the label is imperative.
Over-the-counter treatments and preventatives are not as tightly regulated as prescription medications given by veterinarians. ey may contain ingredients that are known to be harmful to dogs and cats -- like garlic, onion or tobacco. And they are generally less e ective at prevention, and o en completely ine ective for treating an active infestation.
ere’s a risk that over-the-counter and “natural” medications can make your pet as ill -- or even sicker -- than the vet’s recommended medication. Treating parasitic infestations in pets can be tough, and it’s important to balance the type of treatment with the health of the pet.
So folks, read the labels, consider all the risks and talk to your vet before jumping entirely onto the “natural” wagon. ask@pawscorner.com.
