Gardeners What small flowering shrubs will grow in my clay soil? Here are a few to consider for clay soils: Aronia, Diervilla, Dogwood, Elderberry, Flower Quince, Lilac, Potentilla, Rose of Sharon, Annabelle Hydrangea, and Weigela. Some of these have many varieties that are small in size.

Once we have the right plant in the right place planting begins with digging a hole twice as large as the root ball of the plant and to a depth that will be just deep enough to allow the current soil level in the pot or if it is bare root to the level of the root flare or collar. Hi! My name is Loki and I’m 2 1/2 years old Australian Shepherd. I absolutely love socks and anywhere soft I can lay down. You can always find me on my favorite couch waiting for everyone to come pet me! I love playing with my brothers and going on walks with my dad!
RECOGNIZE SIGNS OF HEAT STROKE IN DOGS Can heat stroke be prevented? Though dogs can suffer heat stroke even on mild days, dog owners can take precautionary measures. • Alter routines. Walking can be great exercise for dogs, but on hot days dog owners can walk their dogs when temperatures tend to be at their most mild, such as in the early morning hours or evenings when the sun is setting or has already set.
Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340, Avon, NY 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.
• Limit play time. Dogs generate heat when playing and exercising, and their body temperatures may rise considerably on hot summer days. To reduce dogs’ risk of heat stroke, limit play time on hot days. • Don’t travel with dogs. Temperatures can be unbearable inside vehicles, so dog owners should not take their dogs along when running errands on hot days.

Ann and Herman “Herm” Schubmehl were married November 28, 1953 at St. Joseph’s Church by a special friend, Msgr. Gerard Krieg. Together they celebrated 52 years of marriage prior to Herm passing away in June of 2006. Ann worked at Westinghouse, assisting with the manufacturing of tubes for televisions. Once children came along, Ann was a devoted homemaker for her husband and children. After the children were grown, she worked at Tops in Dansville for 18 years. Ann’s hobbies were many, and the work endless. She enjoyed reading, knitting and gardening; both flowers and vegetables. The family vegetable business supplied hundreds of quarts of vegetables, which she canned to feed her family throughout the year. Ann loved baseball and was a Little League mom, always helping when she could. Ann frequently traveled with her best friends, Nancy Goodrich and RoseAnn Wolfanger, in her later years. Ann was a dedicated and faithful member of St. Joseph’s Church, as it was a very important part of her life. Ann was predeceased by her parents, Alvin and Anna Hargrave; her husband, Herm Schubmehl; 2 sons, John and Steven Schubmehl; and her brother, Jim “Al” Hargrave. She is survived by her children, David (Mary Ann) Schubmehl of Delmar, Thomas (Cindy) Schubmehl of Corfu, Peter (Kara) Schubmehl of Delmar, Marybeth (Rodney) Renn of Ossian, and daughter-in-law, Linda Schubmehl of Wayland. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren; her siblings, Joyce Wolfanger Seigfred of Rochester, Robert (Carol) Hargrave of Rocky Mount, NC, and sister-in-law, Shirley Hargrave of Wayland; and many nieces and nephews. Ann’s family and friends called Thursday, July 14, 2022 from 4-7 pm at St. George-Forsythe Funeral Home, 109 West Naples St., Wayland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Ann on Friday, July 15, 2022 at 10 am at St. Joseph’s Church, 206 Fremont St., Wayland. Committal prayers and interment will take place immediately following at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Perkinsville. There will be a luncheon provided at the Perkinsville Fire Dept. by the Ladies Auxiliary. UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE Buying life insurance. Much like various other types of insurance, life insurance can be purchased from an insurance agent or via an insurance company’s website. When choosing a company from which to buy a life insurance policy, look for a company with a strong rating, as no one wants to end up being burned by a life insurance provider who goes out of business. Some people prefer to work with independent brokers who can share information about products from various providers rather than just the ones offered by the firm company-affiliated agents work for.

• Adhere to recommended maintenance schedules. Even if a car has barely hit the road in recent months, its fluids, such as oil, are still aging and still need to be replaced.

• Turn the car on every so often. Turning the car on, even if you only intend to let it sit idle in the driveway, keeps the vehicle components lubricated by allowing fluids to cycle their way through the engine. Turning the car on also ensures the battery stays fresh and doesn’t die. • Disconnect the battery if necessary. Drivers who own two vehicles or families who have only been using the family car in recent months can disconnect the batteries from their unused vehicles to prevent corrosion. Corrosion decreases battery life and performance. • Take the car for a spin. Of course, driving a vehicle every so often is a great way to keep it running strong.

AVOID INJURIES WHEN WORKING OUT
PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Snooping Out a Mystery Pooper DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Recently, a new neighbor with a big dog moved into one of the apartments next door. Since then, every morning there’s a fresh deposit of dog poo on my front lawn. And not on the edge -- right in the middle of the lawn. Because it happens before sunrise each day, I suspect the new neighbor is letting their dog out, unleashed and unsupervised, to do its business wherever it pleases. How should I deal with this problem? I don’t have clear proof that it’s the new neighbor, but it sure smells like it. -- Disgusted in Dallas
Allow for adequate time to warm up. Failure to warm up is another contributor to exercise-related injury. Before diving into a workout routine, spend between five and 10 minutes warming up your body with some low-intensity exercises. This increases blood flow to the muscles and makes them more elastic and pliable than cold muscles, thereby improving flexibility. Some low-intensity cardiovascular exercise on the stationary bike or treadmill can greatly reduce injury risk during the workout.
Dear Disgusted: I’m with you. Owners need to be responsible for their pets, and they need to be good neighbors by keeping their dogs on a leash and picking up after them. There are a couple of ways to discover the culprit. The low-cost way is to wake up well before dawn and watch your front lawn. Snap a photo of the dog when it comes onto your property, but don’t try to shoo it away -- you’re gathering evidence. The high-cost way is to install a security camera with a motion sensor. Aim it so that it has a good view of your property but not other yards (it’s a privacy issue). Set it to record when the motion sensor is triggered. With or without proof, contact the property manager of the apartment building. Calmly explain the situation and your suspicions, and ask them to remind residents in writing about leash laws. Most property managers have a vested interest in keeping the neighbors happy and will cooperate to solve the problem. Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com. KIDS AND SLEEP School-aged children are busier than ever before, and some may be sacrificing sleep to accommodate their lifestyles. The National Sleep Foundation says school-aged children need between nine and 11 hours of sleep each night to function at a healthy level. Sleep deprivation can be linked to a host of health ailments, including issues affecting the development of the brain. Growing evidence suggests that lack of sleep can cause disturbances in metabolic rates that could affect the risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. A recent study from Johns Hopkins University found that, for each additional hour of sleep a child gets, the risk of that child becoming overweight or obese decreases by 9 percent. Children who slept the least, according to the research, had a 92 percent higher risk of being overweight or obese compared to children with longer sleep duration. The NSF adds that poor or inadequate sleep can lead to mood swings, behavioral problems and cognitive problems that impact kids’ ability to learn in school. To promote good sleep habits in children, parents and other caregivers can establish consistent sleep/ wake routines; ensure children avoid excess caffeine, particularly late in the day; create a cool, dark sleep environment; keep televisions and other media devices out of bedrooms; and help children work through stressors that may impact sleep.

DID YOU KNOW? Halitosis, or bad breath as it’s commonly known, can result from any number of factors. While food can be a culprit, some additional factors may be contributing to mouth odor as well. Poor dental hygiene is a particular concern. According to Colgate and the American Dental Association, failure to brush and floss teeth regularly leads to the accumulation of food particles in the mouth. This food can collect bacteria and begin to break down, causing a bad aroma. Dry mouth is another condition that causes bad breath. Without adequate saliva production, particles of food that may cause odor are not swept away regularly. Bad breath also may be an indication of a medical condition elsewhere in the body. Upper respiratory infections and gastrointestinal disturbances may contribute to halitosis. DANSVILLE-WAYLAND EDITION

Osteoporosis Treatment Could Put Jaw at Risk

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an 80-year-old female in good health except for a diagnosis of osteopenia. My primary care doctor has prescribed medication for my osteopenia. I have periodontal disease and have been advised by my periodontal specialist not to take medication for osteopenia due to deterioration of the jawbone. I think I am in a loselose situation. I spoke to my internal medicine doctor, and he said he was concerned about a hip fracture if I don’t take the osteopenia medication. I don’t want to take a chance on the jaw deteriorating. Please give me your opinion on the best course of action. -- G.M. ANSWER: Osteopenia, also called low bone density, is a risk factor for osteoporosis. The risk of developing a fracture depends on a person’s age and sex, height and weight, results of their bone density test and presence of certain other medical risk factors, including previous fracture, use of glucocorticoid drugs like prednisone, smoking and rheumatoid arthritis. Fracture risk is commonly estimated by the FRAX tool (www.sheffield.ac.uk/FRAX/). If the estimated hip fracture risk is 3%, or the combined risk of any fracture is 20%, then medication treatment is usually recommended. Getting your FRAX result is a critical number to have to help make an informed decision. You will need the exact results of your bone density. If your risk is not so high that medication is recommended, there are many things you can do to help your bone density. These include adequate dietary calcium, supplemental vitamin D, regular exercise -- especially weight-bearing and strengthening exercises -- and avoiding smoking and excess alcohol. A home evaluation to reduce fall risk may be of benefit. If your fracture risk is already higher than the above threshold, medication would normally be prescribed in addition to lifestyle treatments. Antiresorptive treatments, such as alendronate (Fosamax) or other bisphosphonate drugs, do increase the risk for jawbone damage, and given what your periodontist has recommended, I would avoid not only these drugs but also denosumab (Prolia), which works similarly by decreasing bone resorption. Although I am not an expert, I would consider treatment with a medicine like teriparatide, which has been used as a treatment for people with jaw osteonecrosis. This medicine works by stimulating bone growth and has a good safety record. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES THAT ARE PERFECT FOR SENIORS Water aerobics: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that waterbased exercises can be especially helpful individuals with chronic diseases, a category many seniors fall into. The CDC notes that one study published in the journal Arthritis & Rheumatology found that improves the use of joints affected by arthritis without worsening symptoms. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services also notes that swimming can lead to improved health for people with diabetes and heart disease. Seniors can reap these benefits by going for a dip in their own backyard pools or a local body of water, such as a lake or ocean. Many swim clubs also offer discounted memberships to seniors, making these another great and affordable way to reap the benefits of swimming.

GO GREEN WHEN SPENDING TIME OUTDOORS THIS SUMMER Embrace eco-friendly activities. Various activities, from organic gardening to planting trees to beach cleanups, provide a great way to get outdoors and help the planet at the same time. Men and women who grow their own vegetables can take solace knowing that the vegetables they’re eating each night did not require the depletion of any natural resources to go from garden to table. Signing up for beach cleanups can prevent trash, including harmful plastics, from making its way into the world’s oceans, and such cleanups provide a great excuse to go to the beach.

HAVE KIDS; WILL TRAVEL: MASTER VACATIONING WITH YOUNG CHILDREN Factor in “stretch your legs” opportunities. Children have limited attention spans and abilities to stay put. According to Brain Balance, a program for improving concentration, children between the ages of two and six have attention spans from four to 18 minutes. Since kids may not be able to sit still the entire time, build breaks into trips so they can get up, run around and expend some of their boundless energy. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Keeping our Promise: More than a Mission Part I BY AMANDA DUDEK
Welcoming a young refugee to safety! (l-r: Laurel Prothero, Ellen Smith & Mohammad Ullah)
W
hen the United States military evacuated from Afghanistan in August 2021, the plight of those left behind was thrown into the spotlight; however, passionate, selfless men and women had been working throughout the war to secure the safety of the interpreters and support personnel who risked their lives working with the United States. Keeping Our Promise, Inc. (KOP), originally the initial chapter of No One Left Behind (NOLB), is one such program, and the impact of last year’s evacuation cannot be overstated. KOP is the most comprehensive resettlement program for Afghan, Iraqi and Kurdish interpreters and support personnel in the United States today. This Rochester-based program assists with initial visa applications under the Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) Program. In 2021 74 Afghan families totaling 219 individuals were resettled in the greater Rochester, NY area. The majority – 195 individuals – arrived since July 4, 2021, a record for the program, straining its volunteer capacity. Pashtuns, Uzbeks, Tajiks, Hazara, Turkmen and Nuristanis from Afghanistan, Sunni and Shia Iraqis, as well as Kurdish allies, who served the U.S. have received help from KOP to come to Rochester under the SIV program for their faithful and honorable service to the United States in a warzone. KOP provides such assistance as: •
Finding & furnishing apartments for newly arrived families
•
Offering Caring Circles for each family to navigate the necessities of their new lives in Rochester
•
Exploring skilled-trades training & helping find employment
•
Offering modest car grants so SIVs can get to work, and much more.
“Keeping Our Promise started in my head in 2013 when I just signed a petition to get a military captain’s interpreter a visa into the U.S. after he was targeted by the Taliban,” said KOP Executive Director Ellen Smith. Having assisted over 600 SIV refugees and their families, Ellen was a credentialed journalist for 29 years, won 37 top journalism awards, and was recently honored with the 2019 Hannah G. Solomon Humanitarian Award, as well.
Starting to hear the stories, and in some cases to see the physical wounds from battle, seeing what it meant for these soldiers to get their interpreters to safety has made me so passionate about this. These people believe in American ideals.” - Ellen Smith
“It took off from there. People were bringing furniture to my house, and I used to house families at our farm,” said the Mendon resident. “It is a very stressful time for these families, especially when you have kids involved; they usually cry for the first two weeks. They are tired, off time by about 9 hours. Also, all of these families are used to living in extended family units, so it is the first time they are away from their aunts, cousins, grandparents…it is a learning experience for everyone all the time.” When No One Left Behind was discontinued in 2018, KOP was born, becoming an independent 501(c)3. “We still work with NOLB,” said Ellen. “In fact, they gave us the grant money to hire Laurel because I was so overwhelmed with families last year. We have already helped 43 families from January to June of this year.” Assistant Executive Director Laurel Prothero couldn’t have been more pleased. “A friend of mine had worked with KOP,” she said when explaining how she first heard of the organization. “He had worked with an organization called Skateistan, teaching youth in Afghanistan how to skateboard. I started in September 2021 as a volunteer, was a part of the caring circles, and adopted a few families. I was pretty much volunteering full-time when they asked me to work for them. It evolved from there.” Almost all of the Skateistan program families were able to be resettled into one community. The need of these KOP families could not be clearer. “We know that if these people don’t get out of Afghanistan, they could be beheaded or tortured by the Taliban or Isil (Islamic State),” explained Ellen. “Starting to hear the stories, and in some cases to see the physical wounds from battle, seeing what it meant for these soldiers to get their interpreters to safety has made me so passionate about this. These people believed in American ideals.” “These men and women have risked so much because of their hope for their country,” said Laurel. “They didn’t want to see an authoritarian system. Many of them want more rights for women. They risked a lot to work with Americans, to work beside us. They have lost so much, and it is really an honor to be able to be there to welcome them, to give them a safe place, a respite, a community…a chance to make it here.” Want to learn more about Keeping Our Promise? Come back next week for harrowing refugee experiences, resettlement, what’s next for KOP, and how you can help! Enjoy this article? Check out this week’s other great story online at www. gvpennysaver.com:
The KOP ball really started rolling when a military captain in Syracuse , Michael Chapel, reached out to Ellen to help his interpreter. “Michael got him an apartment, and we worked together to furnish it,” said Ellen. “I helped this second interpreter, and I thought I was done. Then, when I was on vacation in 2015, I received a call about another interpreter in a bad situation in Rochester. The interpreter asked if I could help his neighbor as well.” That neighbor turned out to be Javayd Samadie, a current member of the KOP Board, responsible for helping to formulate the best practices for taking care of newly arrived SIV refugee families, helping with insurance for our Wheels for

Work program, offering job search advice, and more. Mr. Samadie served the U.S. mission in Afghanistan for six years, has a degree in Business Administration, a Master’s Degree in Governance and Public Policy, and has done work for the United Nations.

THE TYPE OF LODGING ACCOMMODATION Airbnb: A relative newcomer to the accommodations arena, an Airbnb is a residental property that hosts renters, often on a short-term basis. These may be private apartments, condos, homes, or vacation properties that owners temporarily sublet to travelers. While Airbnb is the name of a registered rental marketplace company (airbnb.com), the term often is used for any property that follows the same model, including options from companies like VRBO and HomeAway. Airbnb is an abbreviation that stands for “air mattress bed and breakfast.”

FUN WAYS TO KEEP KIDS OCCUPIED OVER SUMMER BREAK
The Pick-Your-Own Blueberry Season is opening!
Reading: Parents may be surprised by how much their children enjoy a good book. A recent poll from the National Education Association found that 70 percent of middle school students read more than 10 books a year. The National Literacy Trust reports that roughly 45 percent of children between the ages of eight and 11 enjoy reading “very much.” When suggesting to children that they read more this summer, parents can note the many ways that reading for pleasure differs from reading for school. Point out that kids won’t have to submit book reports and emphasize that they can choose their own books. Depending on children’s ages, introduce kids to a series like “Harry Potter,” which is a set of seven fantasy novels that has helped millions of young people across the globe discover and develop a fondness for reading. Weekly visits to the library, where kids can pick from hundreds of books, can get youngsters even more excited about reading.

Thanks, Livonia! A HUGE shoutout and thank you to PJ Livonia Highway Superintendent for a great cleanup job from the residents of Tuxedo Park...very much appreciated by all!
Walkers on State Routes Why you would expect people traveling at 55 mph on a busy State Route to move into the other lane so that you could walk two abreast in the road is beyond me. And to make absolutely no effort to move onto the shoulder single file in the face of oncoming traffic is unbelievable! Wake up and smell the roses before they become part of your funeral arrangement!
Medical Last week, I got very sick and called an ambulance in order to be taken a hospital. When medical people arrived and tests were done, I was informed that an ambulance would not transport me to a VA hospital as it is not considered a full working hospital. I had to have my wife run me to VA hospital...very painful. After lots of testing, I was told I had a deep vein thrombosis in my groin at the top of right leg. I would think if a person were in that much trouble, you should be rushed. My legs were three times the size of normal.
Thoughtless People Someone was cruel and thoughtless enough to steal 4 decorative rocks off a grave in [local town]. They were obviously not just rocks; they were part of the “landscaping” of the grave. They had been there for 23 years! I can’t understand how someone can be so heartless and uncaring! If you have any conscience at all, please return them! Karma!
Where did respect go? When mowing the grass, if you have neighbors and want to be respectful, the right thing to do is now three passes, blowing grass away from the neighbor's property. Come on! Please use common sense.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Don’t Disregard AARP
Starting when we reach age 50, our mailbox becomes flooded with frequent invitations to join AARP. At that age, we don’t want to hear about anything for seniors because, in our eyes, we aren’t seniors yet. We don’t even qualify for a senior discount at local stores. So maybe we don’t even look at the piles of literature and ads AARP sends. But maybe we should. There’s more to AARP than meets the eye. For a mere $16 per year, we get a whole list of benefits and information. The discounts themselves are impressive, in over a dozen categories. Want to send flowers or a gourmet fruit basket? Get a 20% discount. Traveling and need a rental car? Get a 30% discount. Save on RV insurance, prescriptions at Walmart, restaurants, hearing aids (20%), Ancestry.com (30%), Norton computer security (25%) and much more. There is a jobs board (315 jobs in my ZIP code alone), an auto-buying program to help with dealer pricing, online games, local chapters and podcasts, a government watch ... everything designed to help seniors. And then there is the AARP Bulletin monthly magazine that is sent by mail to members. If there’s one thing you don’t want to leave lying around unread, it’s this. I just picked up a recent copy and discovered three must-read articles: Identifying phone scams when you get a call, cutting the cost of online groceries and, most important of all, an article on drug interactions. Imagine my surprise to see two of my drugs listed with information about contraindications no one ever told me about. And what do they do with our membership fees? They advocate for us all over the country, especially with Social Security and Medicare. If you’re not signed up for AARP, it’s something you should consider. If in doubt, go to www.aarp.org and scroll down the page to see what’s new. If you have questions, call AARP at 888-687-2277 (Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. EST) (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.
This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

DID YOU KNOW? According to Gallup’s 2021 Economy and Personal Finance survey, the average individual in the United States is retiring earlier than many people might expect. Gallup found that the average retirement age was 62, which is two years earlier than the working respondents indicated they planned to retire. Canadians are retiring a little bit later than their American counterparts, as Statistics Canada reports the average retirement age in Canada is just over 63 and a half. The average retirement age is worth noting, as studies routinely find that many working professionals greatest concern about retiring is that they won’t have enough money saved to meet their needs. By recognizing that they may end up retiring earlier than they initially planned, professionals can make a concerted effort to save more money in the years ahead.

According to the “State of American Vacation 2016” report from Project: Time Off, American workers failed to use 658 million vacation days in 2015. Vacation is not just a time to get away, but a valuable, effective way for workers to recharge. The APA notes that avoiding the negative effects of chronic stress and burnout requires workers to take time away to replenish and return to their pre-stress level of functioning. Taking time off to disconnect from work and avoid thinking about work can be just what workers need to overcome their work-related stress. And plenty of workers have the time to take off; they just need to take it.
