ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your honesty is, as always, admirable. But you might want to be more tactful in discussing a sensitive issue with a family member. Remember: You can give advice without giving offense. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) An unexpected workplace snag should be handled quickly and efficiently so that it leaves you time for family get-togethers. Also, you might soon get that long-sought apology. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Aspects favor family matters, especially where children might be involved. Spending time with loved ones helps restore some much-needed balance to your typically busy schedule. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) That seemingly clear-cut agreement might not be quite so straightforward after all. Recheck for language that could make you liable for hidden costs and other unpleasant surprises. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Careful, Kitty. Better to deal with someone with proven reliability than with a big talker who promises much but can’t confirm that he or she will deliver. Your social life really zings this weekend. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your matchmaking skills are at peak performance levels both in helping to staff workplace teams for upcoming projects and for bringing people together on a more personal basis. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You’re finally seeing some progress with your new venture. But be prepared for it to continue at a slower pace than you’re used to. Meanwhile, a loved one could be preparing a surprise. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A family member’s success pulls you into the spotlight as well. Enjoy it, but don’t let it overshadow or otherwise obstruct what you’re doing with your own creative projects. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Using what you already know might not be quite enough to get a proposed project off the ground. Look for any new information that might help tilt the scales in your favor. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Good news: While a changing workplace environment can be daunting for some, it could be the challenge you’ve been hoping for. If so, confront it with confidence and move on. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) It’s a good time to recheck travel arrangements for any changes that could work to your advantage. Aspects also favor strengthening and restoring old, fraying relationships. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Using your intuitive reasoning helps you cut right through the double-talk and go straight to what’s really going on around you. Stay the course until all your questions are answered. BORN THIS WEEK: You radiate light and warmth, and others love being close to you. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

I am writing this letter to convey my most deep and sincere appreciation for the incredibly supportive help I received during an emergency at my home in early June. Words cannot express my gratitude to Mike Kellogg, my neighbor who was there for me and went above and beyond to ensure my safety as well To those who are defending flying the Confederate flag: It is the 21st century, not the 19th. Regardless of your reasons for flying the flag, it has come to represent white supremacy. By flying it you are self-identifying as and aligning yourself with these terrorist groups, intentionally or not. It’s like flying a swastika and claiming you are not a Nazi sympathizer. Good luck with that. Then there is the issue of the Civil War ending over 150 years ago as did the Confederacy, so what’s your point? It’s time to let it go and move on. It’s not like you were around then and had a personal investment in the Southern cause. There is no place for the Confederate flag in the 21st century, save for in history museums. as to the First Responders whose determination to assist me helped save my life that day. Mike, your continued support and selfless acts of kindness to make things easier for me has not gone unnoticed; I am forever in your debt. To my family of 47 years at Graham Manufacturing, thank you for your love and kindness and inquiries, you are all unsung heroes in my book. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart. Sincerely, Lance Frens On the evening of June 12, 2019, my cat Kitten got hit by a car on Black Street Rd. in LeRoy. I would like to thank the lady kids could not play on a privately-owned, church playground: Empathy has nothing to do with it. That play equipment belongs to the church. I expect they are not in a position to maintain it for public use nor take on any liability for misuse. Having special needs does not mean your children are allowed to play with items that aren’t theirs. There are plenty of public play spaces.
for stopping and checking on the condition of Kitten. Unfortunately, Kitten did not survive. I am very grateful that the lady stopped. More motorists should abide by this example. Congratulations Staff SGT David Belavia for your medal for heroism. You made us proud. Not only for winning the Medal of Honor but additionally to your community service via radio show and support for local Veterans. As a Retired Veteran myself, you gave me “goose bumps” watching the presentation. Well done! I wanted to write a short note to express my appreciation for you and everything you do to help with There are so many liability reasons that they would not want to make it open to the public. Plus, there is the cost of upkeep. While town taxes go to paying to keep town playgrounds kept in working order, private donations go to keeping church playgrounds in working order.

the VEC morning routine. For the past two years, I have been amazed by the skill and commitment with which you do your job while I have dropped off my daughter and son for PreK. You keep everyone safe, while moving traffic along to help those, like myself, get to work. You are always smiling and greeting the parents and students, even if it’s just with a friendly wave. Thank you for coming to work each day to keep the children and parents safe. We are very grateful and lucky to have such committed members of the Victor School District. a disrespect to the United states and its people. To the person who hit my neighbors’ little dog on our very busy street: I want you to know it wasn’t your fault. You probably should have stopped, but I get it, you may be a high school kid and were scared. My neighbors have regularly let the dog roam our neighborhood for years. Their previous dogs as well. They were reported many times to the dog warden but continued to subject us to their dog’s urine and feces. People need to wake up and be responsible for their pets and be considerate to neighbors. I am just glad I didn’t see it happen.

Five Ways To A Better Move (NAPS)—The next time you’re among the estimated 40 million Americans a year who move into a new home, heeding these five hints can help you stress less: 1. Know what’s happening when. Make a list of everything you need to do and when you need to do it. It should include budgeting, decluttering, hiring movers, buying supplies, and updating medical and financial records. 2. Keep all your critical move-related names, phone numbers and addresses in one document. You may want to store them in your smartphone and have a hard copy. Be sure you can easily access your moving contract, real estate and mortgage documents, as well as information you may need about utilities, banks and schools. 3. Have a first-night box. Once you’re in your new home, you don’t want to have to hunt for such things as box cutters, tools, device chargers, bed linens, shower curtains, toiletries—and the coffeepot. 4. Stay connected to what matters most—family, friends, Internet, Wi-Fi and TV. Arrange your services in advance of your move at CableMover.com. 5. Get help. For a one-stop, customizable way to stay organized, there’s the Moving Guide from CableMover, downloadable at www.cablemover.com. Page 18

Dansville Tractor Drive Benefits Alzheimer’s Association By Amanda Dudek
Paul Hynes completes the 2019 drive aboard his vintage Oliver tractor
Alan Howe finishes the drive with a few guests
On Sunday, July 14th, 93-year-old Dansville resident, Paul Hynes, climbed aboard his vintage Oliver tractor and led his second annual tractor drive in support of those with Alzheimer’s. This year’s tractor drive, which began and ended at the Dansville Fish & Game Club, was part of The Longest Day initiative. The Longest Day participants, like Paul Hynes and his family, honors those facing Alzheimer’s and other dementias by doing what they love to increase awareness and raise funds for care, support and research. For Hynes, this cause is deeply personal. Just before the Christmas of 2013, Hynes lost his wife of 65 years to Alzheimer’s. When asked what it was like when he first met his wife, Hynes, without hesitation, replied, “Heaven...always was, always happy times! I miss her.” Remembering that moment from long ago, he added, “I met Francis in the mid-1940s. I went to school with her sister. She was the new girl, so I had to check her out! It was love at first sight.” It was Francis who encouraged the purchase of his vintage Oliver tractor. “My parents bought the tractor in 1986 after my father retired,” said Hynes’ daughter, Donna Nagle. “He is a very active person, and it was something to keep his mind and hands busy.” Nagle further described her father as “the best grandfather my kids and my brothers’ kids could ask for.”

Answers 1. Paul Quantrill, with 86 in 2004. 2. Pete Rose started 370 consecutive games (1973-76). 3. Kirk Cousins (2015-17). 4. The 2003-04 season, when Oklahoma State was the regularseason champion. 5. Mats Sundin, in 1999. 6. Graham Rahal was 19 when he won a race in 2008. 7. It was 1968, when 40-year-old Pancho Gonzalez reached the semifinals of the French Open.
Last year, Hynes, who founded the Empire State Oliver Tractor Club, the first in New York State, brought together several older men who were also antique tractor owners, including those from his club, and completed a 20-mile drive for Alzheimer’s. This year, he completed a shorter route joined by Alan Rowe on his tractor, pulling a trailer of guests, and Barry Pratt on his tractor. Hynes did receive funds in support of Alzheimer’s, but he firmly stated, “It is not about the money; it’s about helping the community,” adding that his wife had shared his interest in tractors. Hynes’ tractor drive honors his late wife while seeking to increase awareness of the impact Alzheimer’s and other dementias have on families. “The men have a great time driving the tractors,” said Nagle. “This year, my father wanted the drive to fundraise for an organization. gested an Alzheimer’s one, and he jumped right on that.” Nagle said the Alzheimerís Association of Rochester has supported them 100%, including promoting the drive. “All my father had to do was drive his tractor on Sunday and eat a hotdog afterwards!” Nagle was thankful the organization made the event easier for her almost 94-year-old father. “I didn’t want him running all over the countryside advertising this, but he did that anyway, handing out flyers all over the place!” she said with a small chuckle. “I passed out over 200 flyers,” Hynes said proudly.
“It’s about helping out the community.” - Paul Hynes This year’s successful event, which again included local boy scouts selling hotdogs, began at 10am with the drive starting at noon and concluding around 1:30pm. “The spectators really turned out,” said Hynes. Alzeheimer’s Association Communications Manager, Olga Monacell, who rode behind one of the tractors, concurred, adding, “Everywhere we drove, people came out and waved at us.” Monacell noted that more than 400,000 individuals are living with Alzheimer’s dementia in our state. “It was very rewarding,” said Nagle. Hynes agreed, encouraging those who were unable to attend to still consider supporting the Alzheimer’s Association.

Is ‘Beaver Fever’ Cause of Digestive Trouble?
Elizabeth Orlando, Au.D.

DEAR DR. ROACH: Last summer I went camping and ran out of clean water. I had to boil water and drink it without any treatment tablets. That evening, I had painful cramps in my stomach, and in my upper abdomen, under my ribcage. Since then, my digestion has been horrific. I have constant rank gas and bloating when eating foods I’ve never had a problem with before, even fruits and vegetables. I have been a big eater of probiotic foods, with no digestive disturbances. However, since this incident, any form of probiotic, whether from capsule or natural foods like sauerkraut or kimchi, gives me the worst gas and bloating I’ve ever had. I had parasite and bacterial stool testing done with my doctor, and I came up clear. I feel like I need antibiotics or something to clear whatever is going on with my digestive system, but I’m hesitant because I have had four rounds of antibiotics in 2017 from surgeries. I am worried about “beaver fever.” What do you recommend? -- A.L. ANSWER: There are several infections one can get from drinking unprocessed water while camping. “Beaver fever” is a name for infection from the parasite Giardia lamblia, which is found in water where animals (especially beavers) are found. It’s a reasonable thought -- it’s one of the few waterborne infections that can persist for months. However, I think Giardia is unlikely. Symptoms from Giardia normally begin one to two weeks after exposure, and the parasites are killed very rapidly by boiling water. Your symptoms are very much like irritable bowel syndrome, and I do wonder if it might have been triggered by some event that day you were camping. Usually, three sets of cultures for parasites are done to make sure there isn’t an unwelcome guest in your intestine causing symptoms. A gastroenterologist would be a good choice to help you track down an identifiable cause and to get some symptomatic relief. Antibiotics are not recommended without knowing what you are treating.

DEAR DR. ROACH: Seven years ago, I had a stroke. I was immediately put on Lipitor and Plavix. The statin drugs made my arms and shoulders ache, and the doctor tested me and found no reason for it. He said anecdotally that he had many patients who complained of the same thing. He then put me on fenofibrate. The pain stopped immediately. Now he says new research shows that any cholesterol-lowering drug makes the blood tests show lowered cholesterol levels but it does not prevent heart attack or stroke. So he took me off it. I wonder if you know anything about this study that said there was no benefit to taking statins. I did not really understand what he said. -- G.C. ANSWER: It sounds like the message got a bit confused. The evidence that statin drugs reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke in people at high risk, such as those who have had a previous event, is very strong. However, the evidence for fibrate drugs, such as fenofibrate, is much weaker. Statin drugs often cause some muscle aches. Pravastatin and fluvastatin are least likely to cause this problem, so it’s worth a try switching, in my opinion. Some people get relief from muscle aches with a CoQ10 supplement. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. HOW TO MAKE EXISTING WINDOWS MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT Caulk or add weatherstripping. Small cracks and gaps around windows, which are most often found around windows in older buildings, might not seem like a big deal, but such breaches can lead to considerable energy loss. The DOE recommends using caulk to seal cracks that are less than 1/4-inch wide on the parts of the window that do not move (i.e., frames and where the trim meets the wall). Caulk might be less effective at fixing leaks larger than 1/4 inch in width. Employ weatherstripping to address leaks on movable parts of the window. Properly applied weatherstripping should adequately seal windows when they are closed without making it difficult to open or close them later on. Weatherstripping is available in various materials.

DID YOU KNOW? Broadening one’s horizons through crafting can be a worthwhile pursuit. Crafting can serve as a relaxing pastime and provide an opportunity to learn rewarding skills. Learning to crochet is one way for men and women to combine creativity and practicality. Crochet is a form of handwork using yarn and a crochet hook. According to the Crochet Guild of America, there’s no way to know just how old the art of crochet is. However, crochet expert Annie Potter has said the modern form of the art originated in the 16th century, primarily in France and England. Others surmise crocheting traces its origins to Arabia before it spread westward through various Mediterranean trade routes.

On July 19, 1884, President Chester Arthur issues a proclamation that grants him and the federal government the power to quarantine persons entering the U.S. to avoid the spread of “pestilence” (tuberculosis). On July 17, 1941, New York Yankees center fielder Joe DiMaggio fails to get a hit against the Cleveland Indians, bringing his historic 56-game hitting streak to an end. DiMaggio also lost the $10,000 promised to him by Heinz ketchup for matching the number “57” featured on its labels. On July 21, 1959, Elijah Jerry “Pumpsie” Green makes his Boston Red Sox debut, becoming the first African American ever to play for the Red Sox, the last team in the major leagues to integrate. On July 20, 1972, a two-year study by the U.S. Department of Transportation concludes that 1960-63 Chevrolet Corvairs are at least as safe as comparable models of other cars. In his book “Unsafe at Any Speed,” Ralph Nader had targeted the rear-engined Corvair due to its tendency to roll over.

SENIORS AND EXERCISE: TIPS TO AVOID INJURIES, GET HEALTHY Start slowly. Seniors who have not been physically active for some time should take a gradual approach to exercise. Instead of heading right for the treadmill, exercise bike or elliptical machine, start walking every day. When it rains, find a treadmill you can walk on. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons recommends seniors begin by determining how many steps they can take in a day and then gradually working toward 10,000 to 15,000 steps per day. Utilize step counting apps on your smartphone to track your progress. Apply the same slow approach to strength training exercises, lifting only very light weights at first before gradually increasing weight as your body acclimates to the exercises.

Health Benefits Of Plant-Based Nutrition (NAPS)—As people continue to look for ways to live healthier lifestyles, the plant-based diet continues to gain momentum. A plant-based diet describes a way of eating in which there is an emphasis on plant foods in the form of colorful fruits and vegetables, legumes and whole grains. Supporting Your Health with Plant-Based Foods Benefits of eating more plant foods are numerous. Plant foods are nutrient dense, which means that they provide an abundance of nutrients relative to their calorie cost. Fruits, veggies, beans and whole grains are terrific sources of vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients and they’re naturally cholesterol-free. Most contribute a fair amount of fiber, too, so they help to fill you up and keep your digestive tract running smoothly. When you include plenty of these nutritious, filling foods in your diet, it leaves less room in your stomach for less healthy fare. That said, as the proportion of U.S. consumers who adhere to a vegan diet grows, so does the desire for these people to get more protein. In fact, a Nielsen HomeScan survey recently found that 39 percent of Americans are actively trying to eat more plant-based foods and 60 percent want to get more protein in their diets. Identifying Sources of Plant-Based Proteins The major sources of plant-based protein include beans, peas and lentils but whole grains are also important. You may think of whole grains as more of a carb than a protein and that’s true—most grains have more carbohydrate calories than protein calories. But whole grains contribute important essential amino acids to the diet. Most vegans know that in order to get the full complement of essential amino acids (the building blocks of proteins in the body), it’s important to consume both legumes (beans, peas, lentils) and whole grains. Soy is one of the few complete plant-based proteins, meaning it contains the nine essential amino acids that your body cannot produce on its own. How Much Protein Is Right For You? Protein is important for maintaining lean body mass. Susan Bowerman, Registered Dietitian and Senior Director of Worldwide Nutrition Education and Training at Herbalife Nutrition says the Institute of Medicine recommends you eat 10 to 35 percent of your total daily calories from protein. You can estimate your protein needs based on your current body weight. Simply, multiply your body weight by 0.7. The number you get is a reasonable target for the amount of protein, in grams, that you should eat each day. For instance, a woman who weighs 140 pounds should aim for about 100g of protein a day. A 220-pound man should shoot for at least 150g of protein. Introducing Other Plant-Based Proteins While most plant-based diets place an emphasis on whole foods, other plant-based foods that are derived from these whole foods can be included. So, in addition to legumes and whole grains (brown or wild rice, oats, quinoa, millet and the like), other sources of plant-based protein include soy milk, soy cheese, soy yogurt, tofu, tempeh, and protein powders made from plant sources such as soy, pea, rice, hemp, oats or quinoa. To help, Herbalife Nutrition’s Formula 1 Select and Protein Drink Mix Select are two new plant-based nutrition mixes specially formulated with a high-quality blend of pea, quinoa and rice proteins. Formula 1 Select is specially formulated to provide an excellent balance of protein and other key nutrients for optimal nutrition, is an easily digestible source of high-quality plant protein and fiber, and contains no artificial flavors or sweeteners. LEARNING GOLF CAN BE GOOD FOR YOUR CAREER (NAPSI)—Many women, looking to advance in their careers, have found the grass is always greener—on the golf course. As golf remains an important piece of business culture, it is important to empower women to feel confident on the course. Just knowing the basics of the game could encourage participation in key business decisions taking place on the course every day. Why Play Golf Consider these stats and facts from the Professional Golfers Association: • Executives who play golf make 17 percent more than those who don’t. • 54 percent of business professionals see golf as the perfect networking tool. • An estimated 90 percent of Fortune 500 CEOs play golf.
DID YOU KNOW?
• Sandra Day O’Connor, Cameron Diaz, Vera Wang, Celine Dion and Condoleezza Rice are all avid golfers.
Children have long been drawn to expressing themselves through art. According to developmental experts, coloring stimulates creativity, contributes to better handwriting, teaches color recognition, and can promote hand-eye coordination. Coloring books can help children learn to recognize boundaries and structure and develop spacial awareness. Adults, too, have recognized the benefits that coloring can bring, which includes stress reduction and improved focus. Crayons have long been a favorite tool for coloring, and over the years certain colors have emerged as fan favorites. Crayola® conducted polls in 1993 and 2000 to find out the most popular colors of crayons in America. Blue was voted the favorite both times. Six other shades of blue, including cerulean, midnight blue, aquamarine, periwinkle, denim and blizzard blue, finished among the top 10. Purple heart, caribbean green and cerise rounded out the top 10.
• Golf challenges women to go beyond their comfort zone for personal enrichment and a feeling of accomplishment and confidence. • Playing golf with someone gives you insights into his or her integrity, sportsmanship and personality. Empowering Women to Learn Golf: Lexus Teams Up With the MGA The best way to learn the game is in a supportive stress-free environment, such as a local clinic. Lexus recently hosted clinics throughout the tristate area with the Metropolitan Golf Association to help women gain the basic skills needed to get on the course. (Keep an eye out next season because they plan to host more in spring 2019.) It is important to look for clinics like the Lexus “Introduction to Golf” events that start simple and focus on basics like putting and chipping. You’ll also want an intimate clinic, so you get the one-on-one attention you need as a beginner. If a local pro will be there to speak to the group, even better! It’s great to gain inspiration from those who live and breathe the game. Golf experts such as former LPGA Tour player Tara Fleming; Liz Caron, a member of the winning 2004 U.S. Curtis Cup Team; and Kyla Basso, a highly talented amateur golfer, were present at the Lexus-hosted clinics. Among their advice: 1. Don’t let yourself be intimidated when you step onto the course with clients or colleagues—you’ll do better if you remain confident and calm. 2. Allow yourself time to become familiar with the sport. 3. Don’t expect to be a pro from day one. With a little practice and hard work, you’ll be reaping the benefits of golf in no time!
Attention Springwater Residents We are seeking volunteers to serve on the planning board. If interested please contact the planning board chairman, Kyle Mott (585) 208-8115 or call the town clerk’s office (585) 669-2545.

from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County Where is a good place to buy milkweed seeds? – Bonnie Milkweed seeds may be purchased most readily from online sources including Prairie Moon Nursery, where I have been satisfied with my purchases. There are several varieties of milkweed native to the northeast. I would recommend butterfly weed (ASCLEPIAS TUBEROSA) as most appropriate for a home garden. Some people grow common field milkweed (ASCLEPIAS SYRIACA), but it has deep rhizomes (roots) that will spread over a large area.
I would like to plant some native flowers to attract butterflies and birds. Where do I get a list of such plants that are good for this area? – Bonnie There are so many interesting and beautiful native plants to choose from. The Finger Lakes Native Plant Society, website flnps.org, has an
exhaustive list of native plants in a 25-page printable list entitled “Native Plants Suitable for Wildflower Gardens & Meadows or Traditional Gardens in the NY Finger Lakes.” It is divided into 5 categories – 1. Herbaceous Plants-Annuals, Biennials, Perennials; 2. Ferns & Fern Allies; 3. Grasses, Sedges, Rushes; 4. Vines; 5. Shrubs & Trees.
Amanda’s Garden, Native Perennial Nursery. It is located in Sparta, NY (Dansville mailing address), at a beautiful site on Story Rd south of Hemlock Lake. The website is amandasnativeplants.com and contains an “Our Plants” section which includes images of native plants with brief descriptions. You can also sign up for their newsletter in which Anyone in our area interested they cover many aspects of native in native plants should know about perennial gardening.

GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS Work-related stress is an all too common problem in workplaces across the globe. According to the American Institute of Stress, 80 percent of workers report feeling stress on the job. Perhaps most troubling, nearly half of those people admit they need help in learning how to manage their stress. The American Psychological Association notes that stressful work environments can contribute to a host of physical problems, including headache, sleep disturbances and short temper. Chronic stress can produce more serious consequences such as high blood pressure while also weakening sufferers’ immune systems. Stress at the workplace also can make it difficult to concentrate, which in turn can compromise workers’ abilities to perform at the peak of their abilities. That supports the notion that stress is a problem for both employees and employers. As a result, finding ways to reduce that stress should be a team effort. Getting a handle on stress can be difficult. Since so many people trace their stress to the jobs they need to get by, they might think it’s impossible to address that stress without derailing their careers. But there ways for professionals to get a handle on their stress without negatively affecting their careers.

Utility costs vary depending on the size of a business, but the U.S. Small Business Administration notes that prospective business owners must estimate and include such costs when seeking loans to start their businesses. Estimated utility costs can be intimidating, especially for those owners who have never before owned their own businesses. Traditional conservation methods like recycling and reusing are great ways to conserve and save around the office, but business owners also can embrace some other ways to lower their office energy costs while benefitting the planet at the same time.

RELOCATING FOR A NEW JOB Inquire about relocation assistance. The Allied survey found that 63 percent of companies offered relocation packages. That’s a considerable perk, as moving can be expensive, especially for adults moving to different parts of the country. Asking about relocation expenses before being offered a job can be tricky, but some companies may mention such packages in their job ads or in their initial meetings with out-of-town candidates.
