DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My daughter received a goldfish for her last birthday, and true to her word, she has kept the fish healthy and happy. Now, for her 9th birthday, she wants a kitten. I feel that she’s old enough to care for a cat, but am worried that the cat will stress her goldfish. What are your thoughts? -- Judy G., Seattle
Auctions & Antiques ____________________13 Body & Mind _____________________8 Classifieds ____________________38 Employment ____________________33
DEAR JUDY: As a parent, your instincts are important and this one is worth thinking about. Cats are fascinated with fish tanks and can often be found watching the fish inside with rapt attention -- if not actively trying to get a paw into the water. Discuss your concerns with your daughter. At age 9, she’s old enough to consider this problem as well. Is there a way for her goldfish to remain healthy and stress-free while bringing a kitten into your home? There are strategies for doing this successfully, including training that diverts a cat’s attention from the tank and placing the tank out of sight or reach of the cat. Caring for pets is a way to help children develop empathy for all living things. It can help them learn about responsibility, too -- but only when parents are actively involved in the process. You’re doing a great job of helping your daughter understand the importance of caring for pets of all kinds. Having second thoughts about bringing another pet into the house is exactly the kind of thinking parents should do. But you also have the opportunity to guide your daughter and have her be part of the decision as to whether a kitten is a good idea at this point, or whether she should wait another year.

Are you caring for a loved one with memory loss? Drop your loved one off to spend time with caring volunteers who will engage with activities or sit and talk.
Testimony from caregiver whose husband attended respite center: “He so looks forward to it. He asks me every week, is this the day I go [to the respite center]? His world has become so small…his friends have shied away from him [due to dementia]. I’m so thankful it gets him out and he looks forward to being with other people. He doesn’t have involvement with other people anymore. It is a big void in their lives…not being around people. It does him good and helps his self-esteem. The volunteers are so good to him…they are a great group. It helps him tremendously. It is a wonderful asset to the community.”

RECOGNIZE AND AVOID YOUTH SPORTS INJURIES Children benefit in various ways from their involvement in youth sports. Being part of a team fosters feelings of belonging, inspires collaborative play and strategy and can be an excellent form of exercise. Still, despite the benefits, parents often worry about the injury risk their children face on the playing fields. Those fears are justified. A Safe Kids Worldwide survey of emergency room visits found that a young athlete visits a hospital emergency room for a sports-related injury more than a million times a year, or about every 25 seconds. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says more than 2.6 million children 0 to 19 years old are treated in the emergency department each year for sports- and recreation-related injuries. Some of the more common injuries young children face have to do with the skeletal and muscular systems of the body. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons stresses that children’s bones, muscles, tendons, and ligaments are still growing, making them more susceptible to injury. Fortunately, with some education, many youth-sport injuries can be prevented.

DID YOU KNOW? Halitosis, or bad breath as it’s commonly known, can result from any number of factors. While food can be a culprit, some additional factors may be contributing to mouth odor as well. Poor dental hygiene is a particular concern. According to Colgate and the American Dental Association, failure to brush and floss teeth regularly leads to the accumulation of food particles in the mouth. This food can collect bacteria and begin to break down, causing a bad aroma. Dry mouth is another condition that causes bad breath. Without adequate saliva production, particles of food that may cause odor are not swept away regularly. Bad breath also may be an indication of a medical condition elsewhere in the body. Upper respiratory infections and gastrointestinal disturbances may contribute to halitosis.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Reader Seeks Alternative to Rx Antidepressant ---
Genesee Valley Dental Group Dr. Randall Freeman 4806 Lakeville Road • Geneseo, NY • 585-447-9108 We accept Excellus BC/BS PPO, Cigna PPO, CSEA Employee Benefit Fund, and many more. Please check our website, geneseodental.com for the full list.
DEAR DR. ROACH: I suffer from depression. It comes and goes, but I’ve been feeling sad, worried and angry, as well as irritable, for the past four months or so. I force myself to function. My family doctor prescribed a 37.5 mg dose of Effexor once a day to start and after one week, twice a day. I looked up the side effects and what I read scared me. Instead, I’ve been taking 1,000 mg of St. John’s wort daily for almost three weeks, and I have noticed no discernible effect. I told my doctor I would take the Effexor after three weeks if the St. John’s wort hasn’t helped. Should I take his advice? Are there better alternatives? I am middle age and take zero prescription drugs. -- S.M. ANSWER: St. John’s wort, Hypericum perforatum, is a yellow flower that has been medicinally used for centuries. Initial studies suggested benefit in people with mild to moderate depression, and several substances in the flower have been shown to have pharmacologic effects on serotonin receptors, among other effects. However, other trials have shown it to be no better than placebo. It does have important drug interactions, fortunately not an issue for you (as long as you let the St. John’s wort wear off before starting Effexor), but for some people the potential interactions are dangerous. Side effects are not common, but include gastrointestinal upset, dizziness and confusion, fatigue, dry mouth and sexual side effects. It can make people more sensitive to sunlight, and may decrease fertility. The studies that did show a benefit lasted four to 12 weeks. It is possible you might not have had benefit from it yet, and waiting a little longer -- say another week -- wouldn’t be unreasonable to really give the St. John’s wort a chance. However, I seldom recommend this herb due to lack of consistent benefit in trials, the potential for drug interactions and a concern about poor regulation of supplements in terms of amount and purity of the ingredients. For people who want to avoid prescription medicine, I have often recommended S-adenosyl methionine (SAMe). The evidence is better and the side effects and drug interactions fewer. Effexor may be a good choice for you. Prescription antidepressants have been shown to be better than placebo, but they certainly do not work for everybody. If Effexor isn’t a good choice, there are several others. However, I would strongly recommend you consider nonpharmacologic treatment for depression whether or not you decide to take additional medication treatment.

Why does my maple tree have black spots on its leaves, and they are progresses. Small, black, tar-like raised dropping all over my yard? structures form on the upper surface It is called maple tree tar spot disease or within these yellow spots. The black spots Rhytismataceae. Coccomyces dentatus continue to grow in diameter and thickness is a species of fungus in the family to the point where it looks like someone Rhytismataceae. A widespread species, splashed tar on the leaves. Symptoms tend particularly in temperate areas, it colonizes to be more common on trees growing in the dead fallen leaves of vascular plants moist, sheltered locations. Impact: This and is commonly found on oaks, chestnut disease is usually a cosmetic problem and maples. Symptoms: Tar spot is one and does not affect the long-term health of the most readily visible and easiest of the tree. Heavy infections can cause maple diseases to diagnose. It’s also one premature leaf drop – a circumstance of the least damaging ailments on its that causes great consternation to host. The first tar spot symptoms usually homeowners because lawns are littered show up in early summer as small, light- and must be raked before autumn green to yellowish-green spots. The spots typically arrives. Management: Since tar enlarge and color intensifies as summer spot fungi overwinter in fallen leaves, the
most effective management technique is to rake and destroy leaves in the fall. This will reduce the number of overwintering “spots” that can infect new leaves the following spring. Neighbors should also rake and destroy infected leaves to be effective. Mulching leaves will destroy many of the spots before they mature, but the mulch pile should be covered or turned before new leaves begin to emerge in the spring. Applications of fungicides
are possible when high levels of infection become unacceptable, but control of tar spot is challenging, especially on mature maples. In addition, if others in a neighborhood setting are not managing the disease on their trees with fungicides or proper sanitation, the act of spraying may be a waste of time and money. SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Biggest Raise in Decades for Social Security? Don’t count your money before it’s in hand, of course. But word is that the Social Security increase we see in January could be as much as 6.1%, the largest since 1983. For the average benefit recipient, currently receiving $1,543, that could amount to $94 per month. It’s a few years too late for a serious increase, but certainly better than the 1.3% bump we saw for 2021 and the 1.6% the year before. Social Security is calculated by the cost-of-living adjustment in the third quarter each year. For 2021, they calculated that a 1.3% increase should be plenty. We know that was wrong, as prices of everything had climbed. It’s all in how and what they calculate. They use the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W), which measures prices on certain goods and services. But we’re not wage earners, and we don’t work in offices. We spend our money on different things. We wonder why they don’t use the index for the elderly (CPI-E), which takes into consideration the things we do buy, such as medical care, medical services, housing and health insurance. (There’s a bill in the House of Representatives -- H.R.4315 -- to do that very thing.) We spend less than the CPI-W group on transportation, food, clothing, entertainment, education and communication. The Federal Reserve Bank did a midsummer survey on what consumers are expecting for the rest of 2021. The expectation of responders is that we’ll see a 4.8% increase on top of what we’ve already seen this year. Keep an eye on the news in October, when the rate of next year’s Social Security increase is finalized. Meanwhile start planning for next year as soon as you can. Look for savings everywhere you can find them. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

RECIPES FOR FUN: If you’re preparing a meal, it could be a good time to teach children of reading age how to review a recipe. Evaluating ingredients to learn how food transforms from raw to cooked or how a dish is created can help kids learn kitchen skills. FOOD GROUPS FOCUS: Get kids involved in making dinner by setting a rule that each food group must be represented. Give them a warmup activity by asking which food groups are found in family favorites like chicken soup, lasagna or meatloaf. Asking kids to guess which ingredients are used in these dishes and identifying which food group each ingredient belongs to can help them understand dietary balance.

HOW PARENTS CAN SIMPLIFY STUDENTS’ TRANSITION TO COLLEGE LIFE
REASONS TO SHOP FARMERS’ MARKETS The vivid colors and smells emanating from farmers’ markets indicate just how fresh and nutritious the offerings tend to be. Farmers who peddle their wares at farmers’ markets adhere to careful farming methods to ensure their foods are as nutritious as possible.
STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne
Let kids fly solo on school day mornings. New college students have to make many adjustments upon moving into their dorms, and getting themselves out of bed each morning and off to class on time is one such change. Parents worried that their students will sleep in when mom and dad isn’t around to remind them to wake up can start letting kids fly solo on school day mornings during their final year of high school. Let kids set their alarms, prepare their own breakfasts and get out the door on time all on their own. By the time their freshman year of college arrives, kids will know how to handle their mornings by themselves.
* English philosopher Sir Francis Bacon (1561-1626) is believed to have eaten a paste of ground pearls and lemon juice to cure illness. * Speaking of pearls, the ancient Greeks believed they were the hardened tears of joy from Aphrodite, goddess of love. * Fear of young people is known as “ephebiphobia.” * The astronomer William Henry Pickering thought that black spots on the Moon were migrating insects.
Medicare The Family of Robert J. Monahan would like to say we deeply appreciate everyone’s kind expressions of sympathy. Thanks to St. George-Forsythe Funeral Home, Todd Forsythe and Bud St. George for all of their help in preparing everything so perfectly. A huge thank you to Father John who gave us so much comfort when he spoke about our brother in church. Thank you, Amy and Andy Maltese for doing the readings. Thank you to my brother’s friends and our friends for coming to calling hours, the church service and to his friend who visited at his home. All the visits made him happy. Thank you to Shannon Wager for keeping his medications straight and Kayla Kinney for helping him with his projects when he was up to getting out. On the evenings that he could get out, he would visit friends who were special to him. For everyone who expressed their sympathy in any way, we are so grateful. Also thank you to the Honor Guard at the Cemetery.

Rosita’s Way… A Sanctuary for Senior and Special Needs Chihuahuas BY SCOTT WURTZEL
T
here is a reason dogs are referred to as “man’s best friend.” They are loving and social animals that, if trained and well cared for, will always be by your side. Unfortunately, a lot of dogs end up being abused and/or abandoned by their owners, left with no place to go, but thatís where rescue shelters and sanctuaries come in. Bonnie Mason runs Rosita’s Way, a sanctuary for senior and special needs chihuahuas located in the Canadice/Hemlock area. After her chihuahua, Rosita, passed away, Bonnie started the sanctuary to rescue and care for other chihuahuas, making sure that they can live out their lives in peace. The sanctuary officially started in 2015. One might wonder what a chihuahua sanctuary would be like. “Our tagline is Where love and acceptance heal,” Mason explains. “It’s a true sanctuary for senior and special needs chihuahuas to come and live their lives out, where they get proper medical care and love for whatever time they have. We do get some hospice cases, so sometimes it’s not too long. We are just the true meaning of the word sanctuary.” These dogs do face a lot of issues due to their breed. According to Mason, chihuahuas are the second most euthanized dog breed, right behind pit bulls. They are also the second most common dog breed found in shelters. “The biggest issue is that people use them as accessories,” Mason states. “Unfortunately, as we all know, when movies come out about different kinds of dogs, those dogs suffer because everyone then wants one. The biggest problem is more out west. California at one point was receiving chihuahuas in their shelters at a rate of 200 a day. Most of them the median age is 10, because once they become seniors, then it’s not so cute to carry them around anymore because they have their medical issues.” Also, due to the high demand, there is a lot of overbreeding, and this is the cause for an increase in chihuahuas with special needs.
Despite the many issues involved with these dogs, there are still ways for those who wish to help to get involved. To Mason, the best way to get involved is to volunteer at different rescues, even if they aren’t specifically for chihuahuas. “Volunteer for the things not everyone wants to do,” Mason explains. “A lot of fundraising happens at yard sales; I can’t for the life of me to get anyone to volunteer to help with a yard sale. It’s the harder things that everybody needs more help with, it’s the get-yourhands-dirty, do-some-work things.” Mason also says that there are plenty of people willing to come play with the dogs, and that helps, but “there needs to be hands-on in the other areas, too. There is a lot to what we do.” If you can’t find the time to help out with a handson approach, you can donate to one of many dog rescue charities. Mason says that you just need to do your research, and in terms of local charities, she has “worked handin-hand with Suzy Q Dog Rescue.” She worked with them to foster a dog, but the dog remains in their care. Mason has also worked with out-of-state organizations such as Long Way Home Adoptables out of Texas and Pink Heart Rescue in Indianapolis.
Old age and disabilities are the biggest reason why these chihuahuas have trouble finding homes. “The dogs we take in are deemed either unadoptable or difficult to adopt out,” Mason says. “We have only honestly had two unadoptable dogs, and they were unadoptable because they were liabilities. One was a bite risk to humans. You never knew what was going to set him off, and that’s a huge liability. You cannot adopt a dog out like that. The other one was super tiny but extremely dog aggressive and had gotten into fights in foster homes. She had basically worn out her welcome in the rescue she was in, so she came to us.” The dogs that are hard to adopt are usually ones with a lot of medical issues. Those types of dogs are ones that will sit in a small rescue for a long time.

What’s In Your Water?
STAY SAFE WHEN GARDENING IN HOT WEATHER Gardening is widely considered as relaxing a hobby as it is rewarding. Although gardening when temperatures are mild, such as in spring and fall, can be relaxing, gardening can be much more physically taxing and even dangerous when temperatures rise during the dog days of summer. Gardens need tending even when temperatures outside are especially hot, so gardeners must take steps to protect their health when working in their gardens during the summer. ●

"Quality Service at Reasonable Rates"
Smart watering conserves water and saves money Place sprinklers correctly. If you do not have an in-ground irrigation system and don’t intend to install one, you will likely use lawn sprinklers to water the lawn. When placing these sprinklers, turn them on and then document their trajectory before moving on to the next area. You want to make sure the water from the sprinklers is not landing on sidewalks, patios or streets, especially if your community typically institutes drought restrictions that limit how much you can water. In such instances, you’ll need to make the best use of the water you’re allowed to use, so make sure none of it is watering the driveway.

HOW PARENTS CAN SIMPLIFY STUDENTS’ TRANSITION TO COLLEGE LIFE Emphasize time management. Today’s high schoolers are busier than ever before, so many may already be prepared for the juggling act that is college life. But college students have more free time than their high school counterparts, so parents can emphasize the importance of managing that free time wisely as opposed to spending it lounging on the couch or napping.

S E V RA Lovely cemetery A big Thank You goes out to whomever lovingly cares for the Union Hill Cemetery. The monuments are trimmed around and the grounds are mowed regularly. There are no tall weeds to wade through when visiting deceased friends and family. Your efforts are very much appreciated and deserve recognition! Thanks to so many! On Sunday, August 8th, I was involved in a rollover accident on 5&20 at Bragg Street. Thanks to so many that stopped to assist: Harley rider Bill and his girlfriend; Nurse Meredith and her son; EMT Mary and others that I didn’t get their names. Your help was greatly appreciated and has renewed my faith that people are kind and good. I owe you all a beer! - Sharon K.
Updated commandment Thou shalt not steal, whilst thou hath not to giveth back. Common courtesy We’re in obvious unchartered waters these days, but for those of you who bother to apply to the many open positions and agree to an in-person interview, not show up without so much as a phone call for explanation is beyond bad manners. Please have the common courtesy and decency to at least call and say you’ve decided not to waste the would-be employer’s valuable time! A new stadium As I looked at the rendering of the new multi-billion dollar stadium, I found it hard to see any difference from the present stadium. A field, seats, luxury boxes, etc., are pretty much what we already have and have paid for. They’re even going to build the new stadium in [local town] where the team has been for years. I’m a fan, just not a fan of this new stadium when the old one is just fine.

And as anyone who has received an inappropriate gift or something that really wasn’t useful can attest, he or she probably doesn’t want to face a situation in which a gift leads to office gossip. According to a poll conducted by Harris, around half of workers plan to gift at least one business associate around the holidays but are confused about what to give. Too often it’s up to workers to navigate these etiquette minefields on their own, but the following tips can help the process go smoothly. Keep it impersonal. Impersonal doesn’t mean it’s acceptable to grab anything off the shelf. But the gift should not be something that would offend tastes or sentiments. Avoid clothing, perfume, jewelry, or accessories. Lotions and other scented items are also ill-advised. Skip your boss. Etiquette experts say that gifts should flow downward not upward in the realm of employment ranking. That means it’s best to stick with gifting colleagues who are on the same level as you. Buying a gift for the boss may look like you’re simply trying to score brownie points instead of offering a meaningful gift. Give group gifts. Rather than gifting individuals, it can be safer to give a group gift from which many can benefit. This can include coffee and pastries from a nearby bakery, or a bouquet of flowers to brighten up the office environment. Keep prices modest. Office giving is not about illustrating who can afford the most expensive gift. Remember, some people will not be able to reciprocate, and they shouldn’t feel uncomfortable for being on the receiving end of a lavish gift. Follow the rules. Gift exchanges should be cleared with supervisors or human resources professionals. It pays to check if there are rules in place for gifting others. Avoid cash gifts. Giving cash or checks is not a good idea. Money should only come by way of bonuses from higher-ups. If you’re stuck on what to give, a gift card to a store that a coworker visits is acceptable.
