Summer Heat Can be Deadly to Pets

Yesterday, our beloved corgi mix, Shemp, was laid to rest. I feel so guilty. He passed from heatstroke after being out in the backyard for just one hour. I never realized that just the heat outdoors could be deadly to dogs. I always was conscientious about dangerous situations; I never once left Shemp in a hot car or walked him on hot sidewalks. Yet a few minutes of inattention, and my Shemp was suddenly in great distress. I rushed him to the veterinarian, but he just didn’t make it. Please warn your readers to keep their dogs inside on hot days and to monitor them closely for signs of heat stress. -- Devastated in Houston Dear Devastated: I am so sorry for the loss of your beloved Shemp. Thank you for warning other readers of the dangers of summer heat. Being outdoors during the extreme temperatures that we’ve experienced this summer, often passing 100 degrees in many states, is dangerous for dogs and other pets. Here are a few ways to keep them safe from heat injury. -- Walk dogs before sunrise and after sunset. Under a hot sun, sidewalks can quickly burn a dog’s paws, and heat and humidity can take a toll on their health. -- Do not leave pets outside unsupervised. Even if they’re just in the backyard, you might not notice their distress until it’s too late. -- Provide a shelter from the sun. A shelter with open sides and a solid top allows airflow and protects from the sun when your dog is outside. -- Make water available all day, everywhere. Carry water on walks, keep their indoor bowl full and provide a water bowl outside.

Master
Gardeners Should I prune my rose bush now? Always prune after your plants bloom (deadheading) except if your rose bush forms lovely rose hips that are also a feature of some species and varieties. Cut flower roses lie hybrid teas and many modern hybrids considered ‘everblooming’ will require faded flowers to be removed. Those flowering stems are best reduced by half to stimulate a second and third set of flowers throughout the season. Why is my lawn is turning brown while my neighbors aren’t, even though neither of us irrigate? On any given turf area or in a neighborhood, we can see a wide variety of responses to the current drought. Following is a list of factors
from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County that will affect how fast a turf shows droughty symptoms or dormancy: • Species: Tall fescue is one of the last to show drought symptoms, many days to weeks following bluegrass or perennial ryegrass. Since dormancy is a survival mechanism, Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass tend to survive drought better • Mowing height: Higher the mowing height, deeper the roots and the better the ability to find water lower in the soil, but the higher mowing height has to be established in the spring • Compaction/heavy soils: Compacted soils force shallow rooting • Sodded lawns tend to show drought faster
than seeded lawns because sod tends to have less root density than seeded lawns of the same cultivar and species, primarily due to soil texture differences between sod field and lawn • High fertility or heavily irrigated will show drought symptoms faster • Spring fertilizer vs heavy fall fertilizer: Better rooting with heavy fall fertilizer • Shade from an abiotic source like a building tends to keep area cooler and turf will retain
color longer • Shade from a biotic source like a tree will compete with turf for the water and turf always loses • Heavy traffic areas tend to show dormancy faster • Thick thatch leads to shallow rooting in the thatch and very rapid drought symptoms • Insect (grub) feeding or patch diseases also enhance dormancy symptoms

Prevent bugs, sap and other substances from ruining a vehicle Insects and bird droppings Splattered bugs and avian surprises dropped from above can be a messy, unsightly nuisance. Their acidic composition also may cause them to damage paint over time. Bugs and droppings can be sticky, so you will need to work with something that will remove the splatter without removing the paint in the process. A product like WD-40 may help. This oily product is normally used on rust and hinges. When applied with a cloth and allowed to penetrate the stain, it can loosen difficult-to-remove sticky substances. Always test any product you use in an inconspicuous spot first to make sure it doesn’t damage or discolor your the paint. Insects or droppings that are fresh may come off relatively easily with a good washing or hosing off of the car. Retailers also sell specialty insect sponges to remove bugs and other debris.

DID YOU KNOW? Parents who want to encourage their children to volunteer may find their efforts at doing so are more convincing if they volunteer themselves. A 2013 study published in the Journal of Adolescence examined the effects that parents who volunteer and talk about volunteering have on children. Researchers found that the children of volunteers were 27 percent more likely to volunteer than children whose parents did not volunteer. In addition, adolescents were 47 percent more likely to volunteer when their parents volunteered and talked about volunteering with their children.

There are different types of depression. A person may have a single bout of major depression or recurring episodes. Depression that lasts two or more years is called persistent depressive disorder. A less common type of depression is called manic-depressive illness. This involves cycles of depression that alternate with extreme highs, or manias.

DID YOU KNOW? Halitosis, or bad breath as it’s commonly known, can result from any number of factors. While food can be a culprit, some additional factors may be contributing to mouth odor as well. Poor dental hygiene is a particular concern. According to Colgate and the American Dental Association, failure to brush and floss teeth regularly leads to the accumulation of food particles in the mouth. This food can collect bacteria and begin to break down, causing a bad aroma. Dry mouth is another condition that causes bad breath. Without adequate saliva production, particles of food that may cause odor are not swept away regularly. Bad breath also may be an indication of a medical condition elsewhere in the body. Upper respiratory infections and gastrointestinal disturbances may contribute to halitosis.

Ways to Become More Active Every Day In addition to working toward at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week, it’s important to avoid being sedentary, when possible. You can do that by making choices that build activity in your day. Some examples include: • Taking the stairs • Printing to the printer farthest away from your desk at work • Getting off the bus or subway one stop early • Parking in the farthest space from the door • Walking around while you are on the phone or having walking meetings

Alarming Rate of False Positives Plagues Lung Cancer Screening ---
Dansville, NY
DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 74-year-old female who smoked a pack a day for 40-plus years, having quit smoking about 18 years ago. As a precaution, I asked my primary doctor to order a screening CT scan, knowing that I’m a candidate for lung cancer. The results showed a 3-mm nodule in one lung, and I was advised not to worry and that my doctor would order another CT scan in six months. I can’t help but wonder if this is cancer and if an oncologist, after six months, will ask me why I waited so long to see him. -- T.W. ANSWER: Medical professionals have been attempting to screen for lung cancer for decades. Chest X-rays proved insensitive: By the time cancer could be seen on X-ray, it was usually too late to do anything about it. CT scans are much more sensitive (maybe too sensitive; see below), and studies have shown that some lives will be saved with a screening program. However, the number of people who would benefit is relatively small. 256 moderate-to-heavy smokers would need yearly screening for three years in order to prevent one lung cancer death. There are two other significant concerns about lung cancer screening. The first is the issue you have now: an abnormal result and what to do about it. It’s extremely common. Almost 25% of scans will be abnormal, and 96% of the abnormal results will be false positives. But it will require multiple scans, and sometimes an invasive procedure, to prove it. This means a great deal of anxiety among people who get the type of result you did. The small size of your nodule means the risk that this nodule is cancerous is much lower than 1%. A follow-up scan is the usual recommendation, and if the nodule is the same size or smaller, the chance of it being cancerous is very close to zero. You should have had a careful explanation of the likelihood of false positive results before getting the scan. You also should have been warned of the possible need for a biopsy and the possible financial costs associated with follow-up testing. The second concern is that current smokers who consider screening should receive intensive advice and help in quitting smoking. A negative CT scan is not a “clean bill of health” for a smoker, and quitting remains to be the single most important thing most smokers can do for their overall health.

‘BREATHE EASIER’ HEALTHCARE DONATION PROGRAM (NAPSI)—Healthcare workers on the front lines of the pandemic are in desperate need of creative solutions to the lack of personal protective gear and supplies that help block harmful airborne pathogens. But civic-minded companies can help. For example, NasalGuard Airborne Particle Blocker, an electrostatic topical nasal gel that prevents airborne particles from entering the nose, created the “Breathe Easier Healthcare Workers Donation Program.” The firm offers free nasal gel to any healthcare professional who’d like to try it. Requests can be sent via www.NasalGuard.com.
On Medicare already? Turning 65 or disabled? Need a supplement? Understand “EPIC”? Confused or have questions? Call or stop by to schedule an appointment. Joyce Davies 170 Franklin St., Dansville, NY (585) 335-4750
“NasalGuard is drug-free and safe for children, the elderly, pregnant or nursing women, and those concerned about potential drug interactions with other medications,” says Kanika Wahi, a biomedical engineer and co-inventor of the micriofiltration technology. “As people take protective measures to help themselves during this time, NasalGuard is another tool in their arsenal of prevention. We at NasalGuard are proud to support the frontline healthcare workers as well as anyone else in need of preventative products.”
38 years of experience in the Medicare market.
The company has long believed in giving back and has donated thousands of units of NasalGuard Airborne Particle Blocker nationally and internationally through a number of well-known charitable organizations.
Additional products and services may be available through Joyce E. Davies Associates, Inc.
Why are so many healthy mature trees being cut down in Dansville? If you go down Clinton and/or Jefferson Streets, you can see the impact their absence makes on the Village. I realize water lines are being installed, but it would seem that an alternative, less drastic and invasive, solution could have been found. Home owners are required to maintain their property to comply with zoning regulations. Cutting down trees doesn’t really beautify our community or give a good impression to visitors. It’s all well and good to plant new trees, but nothing replaces the beauty of hundred-year-old trees.
Please contact the Village Board to express your concern. Your street may be next!

LAKEVIEWCONSTRUCTION.NET HOW TO CONSERVE ENERGY THROUGHOUT SUMMER Narrow the gap between indoor and outdoor temperatures. The DOE notes that the smaller the difference between the temperature indoors and outside the lower cooling costs will be. While it may be tempting to set thermostats to room temperature (68 F) on days when temperatures reach 90 F or above, that’s an enormous temperature gap that will result in a high energy bill. Instead, the DOE recommends setting thermostats to 78 F whenever possible.

Get along? We all know the traffic congestion on the west side of [local town] gets really ugly. Traffic comes to a halt due to construction, but must we lay on the horns and curse at each other while we all sit in traffic? I can’t believe how nasty drivers have become all because there’s construction. F-bombs and horns are blowing with no one able to move. People have changed for the worst. This is no longer a sweet town with sweet people. You anger someone in a car, and you’ll get flipped off or crashed into or cussed out. Why? Please stop this behavior. We are all stuck in traffic, and no one is going to move any faster with swear words and horns.

Tailgating I’m so sick of tailgaters, especially in the early morning. I do the speed limit or maybe 5 mph over. With all the deer this time of day, you would think drivers would back off a bit. Nope, right on my “butt.” If a deer runs out and I have to hit my brakes, guess what’ll happen? If the speed limit is too slow for you, just pass. What ever happened to common sense?
Be quiet! It’s summer and people’s windows are open at night for air. So, when you and your buddies decide you want to go on a fishing trip at 3:30am, you should keep that in mind when you’re having the utter disregard for your neighbors and waking them up with your hollering and laughing. It’s bad enough your old boat makes enough noise pulling out of the driveway. So rude!

In addition to working with leather, he also worked with metal and wood. When asked to fix or make something, regardless of the material, he could do it. How far you go in life depends on your being tender w ith the young, compassionate w ith the aged, sympathetic w ith the striving and tolerant of the w eak and strong. Because someday in your life you w ill have been all of these. - George Washington Carver
Thomas Arthur Olsen March 11, 1953 - October 9, 2020 Tom had many friends. While growing up in Pittsford, you could find Tom down the street with his friend Mike. Mike was like a brother to him, especially since Tom was the only boy in a family of 5 girls. Burt, also a great friend, shared many good times with Tom. A special thank you to Burt who was there for him when Tom was battling cancer. Tom loved his cars, trucks and motorcycles. The 1959 Chrysler Saratoga that Tom drove from Alabama was his pride and joy and he was going to restore it some day! Ford trucks (no Chevys) especially the “Beast”. Tom certainly had a variety of trucks and cars parked on his property! Tom also loved his motorcycles, Triumphs Yamahas, and especially Goldwing motorcycles (don’t even mention Harley Davidsons).Tom loved tinkering with motors and raced Go-Karts in which he won a several trophies - not bad for a guy who started racing Go-Karts in his 50s. Tom loved his cats and especially his dog, Foxy! Tom, a self taught man, worked as a cable lineman down south and all over the eastern seaboard. Tom is survived by his sisters, Rita, Kathy, Mary, Janet and Sue. Predeceased by Amelia and Thomas Olsen. A celebration of life will be held August 21, 2022 starting at 1pm at Hopkins Point Lodge in Mendon Ponds Park. Anyone wishing to contribute pictures, thoughts or stories please visit the Fuller funeral home websit at www.fullerfh.com.

The sudden and unexpected loss of Jesse was a devastating blow to us all. Your profound love and support have been our sustenance. Thank you from the bottom of our broken hearts.

ASSOCIATED WITH CROWDS
LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY Crowd control: Local restaurants tend to be smaller and more intimate than many chain restaurants. This can translate into a calm dining experience. When crowds are small, the noise level inside the restaurant may be muted and service may be fast because there aren’t as many tables to serve. Furthermore, local establishments, although concerned about making a profit, may be less worried about table turnover rate, preferring to let diners linger if it means repeat business.

* Dunce caps used to be a sign of intelligence! Thirteenth-century philosopher John Duns Scotus believed that a pointed cap helped spread knowledge from the tip to the brain, and his followers proudly wore them as badges of honor. A few hundred years later, when his ideas became less popular, the meaning of the Duns cap was turned on its, er, head, becoming a joke that led to its less flattering association.

HOW TO DETERMINE IF IT’S TIME TO DOWNSIZE Space: Many people love the extra space that single-family homes provide. But seniors can take a walk through their homes and see how many rooms they still use on a consistent basis. If much of the home is unused, seniors can probably downsize without adversely affecting their daily lives.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * M.F. in Washington writes: “For taking to a party: Melt vanilla chips in the microwave, adding by handfuls and heating for about 15 seconds at a time. After 15 seconds, stir and repeat until chips have melted. Then dip small clusters of green grapes into the melted vanilla chips.” * “I read your tips in a Rochelle, Illinois, newspaper. The paper is sent to me by a friend, and I love the tips. Here is mine: For homemade spray and wash, mix 2 cups of water, 2 tablespoons of white vinegar, 1 tablespoon of baking soda and 1 tablespoon of dish soap.” -- K.W. in Tennessee * When purchasing school supplies, remember that paper, pencils, etc., typically aren’t on sale mid-year, so stocking up is a good idea. Just make sure the deal you are getting is a good one. Then put it away for distribution later! * I lay out my school clothes and even my hairbrush and stuff to get ready. I put my shoes and socks by the front door. I am always ready before my sister, and I get to watch TV while she is running around. -- R.G. in Florida * Pint-size water bottles are great for refilling with milk. The milk boxes at the grocery store are so expensive, and this way, I can control how chocolatey the chocolate milk is. -- C.C. in Oregon

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Games for Brain Training Cognitive brain training can keep our cognitive abilities functioning better for 10 years. The Advanced Cognitive Training for Independent and Vital Elderly (ACTIVE) is not a new study, but it bears looking at for what it offers seniors in terms of cognitive abilities. The government-funded study followed 2,832 seniors with an average age of 73 after they completed 10 training sessions and four booster sessions 11 and 35 months after the initial training. Participants were divided into four groups: memory training, reasoning training, speed of processing training and a control group with no training. What the study aimed to look at was cognitive abilities and performance in everyday activities, and they collected updated data at the one, two, three, five and 10-year points in the study. What researchers concluded was that seniors reported less decline in cognitive abilities for 10 years in the reasoning and speed portions, not the memory, which dropped off after five years. All this in only 10 training sessions plus four booster sessions? Authentic brain training programs can be found online but generally require a monthly fee. There are others, however, that we can sample for free to create our own training program. Try the dozen brain games at www.mentalup.co/blog/free-brain-games-for-seniors to see if you like these types of challenges. Look online for “free senior brain games,” and you’ll find many sites with free games to play without having to give any personal information or pay a fee. The best “brain stretching” might come from doing a variety of games. Choose from crossword, jigsaw, sudoku, chess, mazes, word puzzles, logic and more, switching around from day to day. Or go to Amazon.com and look for puzzle books. Look at the sample pages to see if they look too easy or too hard. For a great challenge, look for online Scrabble games where you play against the computer! (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.
This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

Consider cross-promotional events. Cross-promotion is a marketing endeavor in which two or more businesses work together to promote a service or product. For example, a local brewery may partner with a local restaurant to showcase a new beer release and a special menu item that pairs well with that particular beer. These types of promotions shed light on what each business can offer, and many consumers would be happy to learn they’re supporting at least two local businesses at the same time.

GREAT WEEKEND GETAWAY IDEAS Soak up the city lights. Big cities tend to clear out on summer weekends, which can make this an ideal time to visit. City visitors won’t have to contend with the sizable crowds that descend on metropolises in winter, when indoor entertainment is in high demand. That means savvy travelers also may find discounts on live theater and local concerts. It also won’t be as difficult to book reservations at the latest culinary hotspots, particularly for travelers who book early.

HAVE KIDS; WILL TRAVEL: MASTER VACATIONING WITH YOUNG CHILDREN Factor in “stretch your legs” opportunities. Children have limited attention spans and abilities to stay put. According to Brain Balance, a program for improving concentration, children between the ages of two and six have attention spans from four to 18 minutes. Since kids may not be able to sit still the entire time, build breaks into trips so they can get up, run around and expend some of their boundless energy.

Congregate Meal Program Supporting Seniors in Livingston County L
ivingston County residents age 60 and older looking for a healthy meal and some social activities need look no further than the Office for the Aging’s Congregate Meal Program (CMP). Available at four locations throughout the County, the CMP provides nutritious noon-time meals, which meet the federal standard of one-third of an individual’s recommended daily calorie allowance for optimum nutrition. In addition to healthy food, the program also offers diners fellowship and socializing along with their lunch, said Livingston County Office for the Aging Director Sue Carlock. I’d like to think of it as nourishment for both the body and mind,” said Carlock. “It’s known that socialization is one of the most effective ways for seniors to improve their mental health. And sharing a delicious and healthy hot meal with others has a way of breaking down barriers and bringing people together over the table. This is a wonderful resource for our older residents and I encourage more of them to take advantage of it and join us.” Program officials suggest a contribution of $3 per meal, but said no one will be denied a meal because of inability or unwillingness to pay. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefit cards are accepted by the CMP. Officials also request diners make reservations before arriving. Transportation may be available at some sites, please call for more information.

CONSERVE ENERGY AROUND THE OFFICE Conservation methods can help save energy and preserve natural resources, but business owners may also be intrigued by the potential cost-savings of conservation. Utility costs vary depending on the size of a business, but the U.S. Small Business Administration notes that prospective business owners must estimate and include such costs when seeking loans to start their businesses. Estimated utility costs can be intimidating, especially for those owners who have never before owned their own businesses. Traditional conservation methods like recycling and reusing are great ways to conserve and save around the office, but business owners also can embrace some other ways to lower their office energy costs while benefitting the planet at the same time.

BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Make sure you’re getting enough sleep. Failing to get adequate sleep can have an adverse impact on your career. According to the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School, failure to get enough sleep, even for just one night, can impair a person’s ability to function by affecting his or her ability to focus and access high-level cognitive functions. A panel of experts from sleep, anatomy and physiology, as well as pediatrics, neurology, gerontology and gynecology convened by the National Sleep Foundation in 2015 recommended adults between the ages of 26 and 64 get between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. Make a concerted effort to get more sleep if you’re falling short of those recommended guidelines.

According to Gallup’s 2021 Economy and Personal Finance survey, the average individual in the United States is retiring earlier than many people might expect. Gallup found that the average retirement age was 62, which is two years earlier than the working respondents indicated they planned to retire. Canadians are retiring a little bit later than their American counterparts, as Statistics Canada reports the average retirement age in Canada is just over 63 and a half. The average retirement age is worth noting, as studies routinely find that many working professionals greatest concern about retiring is that they won’t have enough money saved to meet their needs. By recognizing that they may end up retiring earlier than they initially planned, professionals can make a concerted effort to save more money in the years ahead.
