Safeguard yourself from summertime ailments and accidents Dehydration: The body needs extra water on hot days, especially when spending ample time outdoors. Dehydration can cause dizziness and dry mouth and may make you feel faint. Always drink plenty of water and avoid alcoholic beverages and soft drinks, which can contribute to dehydration when consumed in excess.

Dr. Lenny Santos

AVOID INJURIES WHEN WORKING OUT Be patient. Lifting too much weight or pushing yourself too hard on the treadmill, exercise bike or elliptical machine will increase your risk of injury. This is especially true for men and women working out for the first time or after lengthy stretches of inactivity. Men and women who are elderly, inactive and/ or overweight are likely to suffer from poor balance because their muscles are weak. Those muscles can be strengthened over time, but remain patient and stick to light weight during initial workouts so lack of balance does not lead to pain or injury. Take the same approach with aerobic exercise to prevent muscle strains and pulls. Increase weight and the intensity of cardiovascular exercises as muscles gradually strengthen and become accustomed to exercise.

Quality Sleep To help you feel your best and sleep more soundly, try the following tips: Take a shower – About 90 minutes before bedtime, take a hot bath or shower. This will help to reduce muscle tension & accelerate sleep onset. Create an electronics curfew – The blue light from your favorite electronic devices interrupts your ability to relax and fall asleep. Don’t use your smartphone, tablet and other digital devices for one hour before bed. Stretch to relax – Stretching for 10-15 minutes before bed will help reduce muscle tension. Turn down noises and do some gentle stretches to relax the muscles and mind. Set a wake-up schedule – Try to wake up at the same time each morning, even on the weekends. This will help keep your internal clock ticking correctly so you can fall asleep more quickly and sleep deeply. Embrace natural light – About 15 minutes of sunlight each morning will help reset your circadian rhythm so you can rise more naturally and then sleep better in the evenings.

Studies Don’t Support CDB Oil for Depression

Dr. Randall Freeman 4806 Lakeville Road • Geneseo, NY • 585-447-9108 We accept Excellus BC/BS PPO, Cigna PPO, CSEA Employee Benefit Fund, and many more.

---

DEAR DR. ROACH: My son is taking

Please check our website, geneseodental.com for the full list.

hemp-based CBD oil for depression. He purchased this at a health food store. His doctor prescribed pills that he was unable to tolerate due to suicidal thoughts. He is unable to go outside when taking CBD. We would like to know if it will show up in a drug test as part of a job interview. Should he be taking it? -- D. ANSWER: There are animal studies and some preliminary data suggesting that cannabidiol, a nonpsychoactive substance found in cannabis, might be effective for anxiety and depressive disorders. I hope that CBD will be proven to be a useful treatment for depression, as what we have now certainly isn’t perfect. However, there are not yet high-quality studies supporting this use. The fact that your son can’t go out while taking the CBD suggests to me that it may not be effective. While the pills he had previously cannot be used, there are many treatments available for depression that have better safety and effectiveness data than CBD. Most forensic drug testing uses THC and its metabolites, so if what your son is taking is truly CBD, then it should not be identified during testing as THC. There is a chance that the “CBD oil” he purchased has THC in it: In one study, 57% of CBD oils sold were found to have measurable THC, which would show up on a drug test. Unfortunately, 25% of the oils contained no CBD at all. I remain convinced that these drugs, THC and CBD, need to be properly studied, and when found to be useful, tested for purity and content in the same way as pharmaceuticals.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Save Money With Phone Plans, Price Matching With the price of everything going up, we need to save our dollars every place we can. Here are two ideas: PHONE PLANS -- If you want to save money on your cellphone plan or the cost of a new phone, there are a dozen or so providers that offer reduced-rate plans for seniors. Some offer a new phone, some will let you use your existing phone and many will let you keep your current phone number. Most offer unlimited talk and text, but prices will vary based on download speeds and data caps. Most also don’t require a contract, but if part of the deal is to buy a new phone from them, you might run into a penalty if you cancel before the phone is paid for. Call around to the phone service providers in your area and ask about senior plans. Be sure to look at their websites to check out the phones. You might need larger buttons or other special features. Better yet, if they have a store near you, go look at the phones in person. Don’t let yourself be talked into a long contract that you don’t want. PRICE MATCHING -- This is a good way to get deals on things you want if you hunt for bargains. Some stores make it their policy to match lower prices found elsewhere. You’ll need to have proof, however, meaning they’ll need to see the current price on the competitor’s website. Your best bet is to call and ask whether they’ll look online right from their store, or if it’s enough for you to print out the competitor’s online ad. It’s mostly the bigger chains that have these policies, but even a local store might be willing to price match just to get your business. Remember to ask for your senior discount everywhere you go! Where Knowledge Grows 200 MAIN ST. • DANSVILLE, NY 14437 • 585.335.6720 Hours: Mon - Thurs: 10am - 8pm and Sat: 9am - 1pm SUMMER READING AND FUN! -- FOR KIDS Remember records? We call them “vinyl” now, but LP Spin Art will be at the Library on August 10 at 3:00 p.m. Kids ages 8 to 15 years old can paint on records and then take home their very own unique “painting.” This program is co-sponsored by the Friends of the Dansville Public Library and features Geoffrey Clough from G & L Music Studio.

AUGUST 2021 WELCOME NEW HIRES Our Library is very pleased to welcome new part time clerk, Betsy Colegrove and library page Hayley Hare. Both are busy learning the ropes, preparing to provide our visitors with the best service ever! Stop in soon, say hello!

RETURN TO NORMAL We are all VERY EXCITED to return to normal service hours. The Library is now open evenings as in pre-COVID times. Regular hours are Monday through Thursday, 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. We’re also pleased to note we have busy times again, and know that evening hours are needed by many families with working parents. We’re here for YOU! Note: if you prefer Pick Up Service, that’s available too. Just give us a call at 585-335-6720. Another sign of “normal” is the return of fines for items which are overdue. We help you avoid this with 2 automatic renewals. At times auto-renewals won’t work --- if your items have been renewed twice already, if another person has your item on hold, or if your borrower’s card has expired. For any issues regarding renewals, please call us and we’ll investigate the reasons. Please know all fines are deposited and used to purchase more new books! And thank you for supporting your Library! And here’s another sign of normalcy! Non-profit organizations are welcome back! Please contact us to have your meetings scheduled and the Alzheimer’s Support Group has resumed meeting the first Monday of every month at 6:00 p.m. Christa Barrows at Noyes/ URMC is currently leading the group. If you are a caregiver or a family member of someone with Alzheimer’s this group is here to help you through this life-changing challenge. Next gathering is Tuesday September 8 (after Labor Day closing)

The Summer Storytime Finale for 6 months to 5 years will close with Storytime Blast! on August 17th at 10:30 a.m. on the Library lawn! We will be enjoying our children’s favorite dancing songs and books, and we’ll have some bubbles too! Please bring a blanket to sit on. In the afternoon, 3:00 p.m. on August 17th, Summer Reading closes out with Hooping For Everybody with Benjamin Berry. What’s your perfect size hoop? What are beginner friendly hoop dance skills? Children will learn the “fun”damentals of waist hooping for fitness, expression and play! Mr. Berry’s program is co-sponsored by the Friends of the Library. In closing, come enjoy Ms. Mary Ellen’s delightful program for our youngest readers, the last of our busy Summer Reading schedule of events. Call to schedule your child’s appointment to read to a trained therapy dog from K’s Canine. Readings begin at 10 a.m. on August 18th. Children can be shy about reading aloud, but a Therapy Dog is trained to be calm, reassuring and attentive. It’s a great opportunity for your child to practice his or her skills reading aloud. Call 585-335-6720 for an appointment. This program is intended for children ages 7 and up.

Closing Notes At the Trustees Annual Meeting on July 12th, officers re-elected are Rhea Walker as President, Sherrie Reilly as Vice President, and Mary Ann Holden as Secretary. Other Trustees are Bill Forsythe and Mary Harrington. And don’t forget to “check out” the NYS Empire Pass! This pass allows you to enter NYS Parks at no cost. When you are visiting, ask if the Pass is available today! The Library will be closed Monday, September 7 in celebration of Labor Day.

This page is sponsored by: Yes, we do THAT too! From business cards to branded products to signs & banners, we can help you get your word out.

Thomas Jay Knapp Born April 23, 2971 Died June 16, 2021 The family of Thomas J Knapp, who passed away suddenly on June 16, 2021, would like to thank everyone who brought food, sent flowers, sent cards, came to the calling hours, donated to the American Heart Association, and in any way supported us in the tragic loss of our beloved husband, father, son and bother, Tom. We want to especially thank the people on Tom’s mail route for all of their compassionate and kind words. We never realized how many lives he touched. Christian and Carl Hindle’s guidance and support to help us get through this very difficult time was outstanding. It was overwhelming and comforting to feel the outpouring of love and support from our friends and family in Dansville and the surrounding communities. Those hugs helped a lot. It is at times like this that we really appreciate living in a small community like Dansville. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Tammy, Jacob, Thomas (Cos) and Francine Knapp

August 3, 2021 Dansville: On August 3, 2021 at age 74, Gary passed away peacefully with his family by his side at his home in Dansville. He was born in Woodhull, NY to the late Harold and Verda Watkins. Survived by his beloved wife of 22 years, Jennifer L. Watkins; his children, Amy (Richard) Neumann, Jennifer (Ryan) York, Adrianne (Brandon) Wilber, Burton (Megan) Price III, and Collin Price, his brother Douglas Watkins; his grandchildren, Cody, Jacob, Jordyn, Cooper, Chase, Juniper, and Maddilyn; along with many loved foster children, nieces, nephews, and long-time friends Judith Guiles and Randy Dieter. Gary spent his 46+ year career following his passion for all things railroad. He traveled the U.S., building and maintaining railways and creating many long-lasting friendships along the way. His incredible work ethic couldn’t go unnoticed. His co-workers looked to him for his wisdom, his guidance, and occasionally for dates. Turns out he was a pretty good matchmaker too (by the way Brandon, you still owe Dad a goat). Always ready with a witty remark, his sly smile gave away his playful nature. He lived to make those he loved happy. No family gathering was complete without an unexpected comment followed by fits of laughter from all in the room and Gary grinning from ear to ear over his accomplishment. His positivity was invaluable as he faced an onslaught of medical issues lasting years. He fought through them all with grace and an amazing strength seldom seen. Most importantly, to Gary family was everything and everyone was family. Never was there a time where Gary would not interrupt his own task to help another in any way needed, whether it was fixing the broken down car of a stranded stranger on the side of the road, or having a long sit down with any one of the many people he held close. All deserved his time, attention and kindness which he gave freely, abundantly and without judgment. Anyone who knew Gary was aware that they knew someone special. They say that a man is measured not by how he dies, but how he chose to live, not by what he gained, but what he chose to give. By this measure, and all others, he was one of a kind. HOW TO CONSERVE ENERGY THROUGHOUT SUMMER

Narrow the gap between indoor and outdoor temperatures. The DOE notes that the smaller the difference between the temperature indoors and outside the lower cooling costs will be. While it may be tempting to set thermostats to room temperature (68 F) on days when temperatures reach 90 F or above, that’s an enormous temperature gap that will result in a high energy bill. Instead, the DOE recommends setting thermostats to 78 F whenever possible. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Are Dog Treats Bad for Fido's Health? DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I use dog treats to train my 18-month-old puppy, "Jif." At the dog park, an owner said that using treats is bad and that Jif will eventually get fat. That's hard to believe, as he is really energetic. He only responds when he knows there is a treat after each command. What do you say? -- Lee in Alexandria, Virginia DEAR LEE: Ah, to treat or not to treat! That's a big issue for many pet owners. Ultimately, you are in charge of Jif 's training and health. Unsolicited advice from other dog owners is only a little helpful, at best. I've interviewed and observed champion breeders and trainers, and one thing I've noted over the years is that some dogs get a treat at every turn, for seemingly every move they make. Other dogs do fine with a treat at the end of their routine. And backstage, when show dogs are being groomed, primped and prepped? They're getting treat after treat. These are champion dogs in top shape. Things to note with using treats: * Treats help build a positive association with specific commands or actions. * The pros use treats that are as healthy as possible: no byproducts, no preservatives. They're often homemade. * Treats are cut into very small pieces. They can be given more frequently without adding too many calories. * Dog treats don't replace meals. Make sure your puppy is fed on time each day with the recommended amount of food for his age and weight. It's possible to replace some of Jif 's treats with other positive associations. Praise, attention, a favorite toy -- things that bring him joy. Build that anticipation of reward in different ways. Check out a few training books, or work with a dog trainer on new ways to reward Jif. Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

S E V RA Sending our thanks The Teresa House Board of Directors, Staff and Volunteers would like to send many thanks to all of our 2021 United Way and SEFA donors. We are constantly amazed by the generosity of our community! Your donations are used in the day-to-day operations of caring for the terminally ill and their families. It is only through your generosity that the ministry of Teresa House can continue. Special thanks to the many donors who contribute every year. We are blessed to live in such a caring community. A friend during the storm I would like to thank Amy Catto for all her support when I was going through a tough time with my husband. I met her when I was going for a walk in the park. She noticed I was sad and asked me what was wrong. I told her about my situation, and she comforted me. She and I met every day after that, and we drank coffee and chatted. I am not having problems with my husband anymore! She gave me more support than a marriage counselor would, and she did it for nothing! I hope to help you and your family in the future, Amy! Brockport Labs are the best! On Tuesday, August 3rd, I went to the lab to get blood drawn and another test as well. What a job to have, but at Brockport lab the phlebotomists always do an excellent job. I have bad veins, as well as being “chicken little” when it comes to getting blood drawn, so they have to be extra attentive so that I don’t turn green. Yes, I was told one time (another lab) that I actually turned green when they had difficulty finding a good vein. So, a shout out to Cassandra Taylor who had to deal with me and my bad veins! Not only was she pleasant and made me feel comfortable, but she knew what she was doing. It was painless and quick. I didn’t even bruise, which is a telltale sign when someone doesn’t do their job correctly. Cassandra, I look forward to seeing you next time around, which will be about 3 months from now! Thank you for doing a job well done!

Fragrance chemicals Not many know this but manufacturers are not required to list their fragrance ingredients on product labels. Often only one word, “fragrance” is used on the label and can hide a cocktail of more than 100 toxic ingredients. This is because fragrances are considered to be “trade secrets.” The fragrance industry regulates itself, so that safety testing does not have to be confirmed by regulators before products are sold to consumers. Fragrance also contains phthalates, which are toxic. Fragrance is classified as allergens, hormone disruptors, asthma triggers, neurotoxins, and carcinogens. These chemicals can pass from your skin (from clothes) into your blood. You also breath them in. Many products sold are scent boosters which is a boost containing many of these toxins. It’s not real scent; it’s all chemicals. Please be careful to your health. Fragrances are in almost every product we use. Speaking truth I want to agree with the person who vented last week about the senior apartments in a local town. I have had bugs in my apartment for a few years now. My carpet is disgusting. I’m embarrassed when I have company come visit. If someone dies or moves, they might paint or put down another cheap carpet. There are a couple of buildings that have had no fire alarms for a month now. The owner has everyone over a barrel. They know we are senior and are on a fixed incomes, and now we got a notice that our rent is going up at least 35.00 starting next month and 3% every year after. But never has anything been said about routine maintenance and upkeep. [Local town] needs more senior apartments that are modestly priced. If anyone is in agreement, please let your voice be heard! Stuck in intersection The person complaining about the rude, impatient driver is a rude, inconsiderate driver. A driver is required to ensure they can make it through an intersection before entering. The person who got stuck is in the wrong. They should wait behind the stop line until the intersection clears before going through. If the light changes while they are waiting, they cannot just go through because they waited. The timing of the lights ensures that too many vehicles can’t go through an intersection so that the flow of traffic is as smooth as possible. People trying to beat the light to avoid being forced to wait another light cycle cause delays for everyone. So, stuck in the middle of the intersection is the rude inconsiderate driver here.

GV BOCES School Library System Receives National Grant BY MAGGIE FITZGIBBON

T

he Genesee Valley BOCES (GV BOCES) School Library System has been awarded a National Leadership Grant for Libraries in the area of a National Forum in response to the need to identify recommendations for effective post-COVID school library programs. This $150,000 grant will fund four virtual national forums on the future of school libraries. Given the high level of complexity, national scope, and emergent nature of the investigation, a collective impact approach will be used to gather together diverse viewpoints from across the country. Topics will include instructional design for remote librarianship, emerging services for teaching and learning, defining the role of the school librarian, and program considerations for new learning models. Reports generated from these forums will provide actionable recommendations for school librarians across the country. Christopher Harris, Ed.D., Director of the GV BOCES School Library System, wrote and submitted that grant and will serve as the project coordinator. Patrick Whipple, Ph.D., Director of GV BOCES Professional Learning Services, will lead the grant evaluation.

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

The first work in the grant project will be the convening of a national advisory panel. Advisory panel members will include the School Library System directors from New York “We are City and Erie 1 BOCES, as well leading this as, directors from Fairfax County (VA) Public Schools, Norman national effort (OK) Public Schools, the past to... meet president of the American student needs Association of School Librarians, and others. in this

During the COVID-19 pandemic, school libraries across the country made changes to procedures, spaces, and instructional practices out of necessity. Across the many models of in-person, hybrid, and remote instruction adopted by districts around the country, there were even more models for school librarians and the services they provide. It is essential that we take time after the immediate pressure of the pandemic emergency to reflect, understand, and evaluate those modified practices. The need for investigation is especially critical in those

“The grant project is called Libraries Today,” Dr. Harris noted. “We are looking at where we are today and where we want to be moving forward. This grant will give us a chance to guide the national policy discussion around school libraries.”

The School Library System new future!” - Dr. Christopher Harris is a Genesee Valley BOCES Program. GV BOCES operates as a Board of Cooperative Educational Services providing shared programs and services to 22 component school districts located in Genesee, Wyoming, Livingston and Steuben counties in New York.

“What we want to do is take a hard look at what the pandemic brought to school libraries and really figure out what worked,” Dr. Harris explained. “We are leading this national effort to bring together thousands of school librarians from across the country to plan out how we are going to move forward to meet student needs in this new future.”

Figures from the U.S. Census Bureau indicates that the average worker spent 26 minutes traveling to work, the most recent year for which the USCB has data. That marks a nearly 20 percent increase in average commute time since 1980. Things aren’t much better in Canada, where the National Household Survey found that the average commuter spends just over 25 minutes traveling to work each day. People who commute via public transportation can use the time they spend going to and from the office to answer emails, review schedules or even work on projects. Commuters who drive themselves to work can consider switching to public transportation or, if possible, move closer to their offices so they spend less time sitting in their vehicles, where they have no choice but to be unproductive.

Managing one’s time can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. As a result, adults with hectic schedules and multiple responsibilities may pine for an extra hour or two in the day. While it’s impossible to extend a day from 24 to 26 hours, there are ways for busy men and women to create more time in their day. 1. Embrace organization tools. Whether it’s day planners, smartphone reminders or more traditional print calendars with meetings and deadlines written on them, organization tools can greatly cut back on time spent trying to remember and/or confirm meeting times, project schedules, deadlines, and other obligations. 2. Assess your productivity. Some people are most productive in the mornings, while others do not hit their strides until after lunch. Identify the time or times of day when you tend to be most productive, and make an effort to focus exclusively on work during these times. Resist any urge to schedule meetings or conference calls during those times of day when you are most productive, as it can be hard to multitask or focus when discussing projects with coworkers or clients. 3. Minimize distractions. Social media, the internet and texting can distract attention away from tasks that must be completed, ultimately affecting how quickly and efficiently such projects are finished. Make a concerted effort to avoid social media and the internet while at work, and turn off smartphone alerts that entice you to go online. In addition, turn off text alerts if they are proving too great a distraction. 4. Reconsider your commute. Professionals who drive to work but find themselves sitting in traffic on their way to and from work can investigate possible alternatives to driving themselves. Public transportation might not get you to work more quickly than driving yourself, but time spent on a bus or train can be used to work on projects and check and answer work-related emails, clearing up time later in the day. Time spent behind the wheel of an automobile cannot be safely spent working.
