Make sure outdoor lighting is working properly. If you’re about to host your first event of the summer, inspect your home’s exterior lighting so everyone isn’t left sitting in the dark. Check patio lighting and replace any bulbs and make sure the lights along your walkways are functioning at full capacity so guests can safely navigate their way around the party. You may even want to string holiday lights around the patio to create a more laid-back ambiance in which guests can relax without lights beating down on them.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * If you had to pick a “standard” pencil color, you’d probably think of a yellow-gold shade -- and that’s no accident. When pencils went into mass production in the 1890s, the finest available graphite fillings came from China. Manufacturers wanted everyone to know that they used only the best Chinese graphite, so they painted their pencils yellow, the traditional color of Chinese royalty.

Discover the Faces Behind Dansville Animal Hospital and Midtown Veterinary Hospital BY SCOTT WURTZEL

W

hen you go to a hospital, you want to know you are in good hands. The same can be said when we take our pets, and thankfully there are two practices in the area that meet those standards. Last June, both Dansville Animal Hospital and Midtown Veterinary Hospital earned AAHA accreditation. To put this accomplishment in perspective, less than 15% of all small-animal hospitals in the U.S and Canada achieve AAHA accreditation. The people behind these two veterinary hospitals are Ruel Maloco and his wife, Veterinarian Dr. Ami Maloco. Ruel is the VP and General Manager, while Dr. Maloco is the Medical Director at both locations. The Maloco’s have a great deal of experience from which they have learned much, and they bring that knowledge to their practices. “I think the best way to put it is that we work as a team,” says Ruel. “She works in the practice as our medical director, whereas I am our business logistics person to run the practice. We both came from the corporate setting from different industries. She was in the Veterinary industry, whereas, I was in Information Technology. We’re bringing a personalized, small business feel to the practices in which we work. There is no corporate feeling in the way we run our practice.” For Dr. Maloco, helping animals was something that started early on. “She had grown up working with animals,” Ruel recalled. “Her father works with animals in the Philippines, so she pursued that career here in the United States. I supported her in the practice, and that helped us expand to our second location in Midtown.” Ruel also talks about the reasons why they chose Dansville, and eventually Midtown. “Primarily, it was because of location and the community,” states Ruel. “Dansville was a great middle location for the surrounding area between Corning and Bath to the south, and Henrietta and Rochester to the north, so we were midway. As for expanding to Midtown, that was to help service a more populated area. It puts us right downtown in the middle of different clienteles.”

The couple are recent owners of these practice as well. “We actually didn’t establish the practice. We acquired the practice from a veterinarian who has been practicing for over 30 years here in Dansville,” Ruel states. “The one in

Midtown was also an acquisition from a longstanding practice of more than 40 years.” The Maloco’s purchased the Dansville Hospital in 2012, and the Midtown Hospital in 2018, ensuring that both areas would continue to have access to high quality veterinary care. Even though they are more recent owners, their hard work and dedication is already evident in their AAHA accreditation for both hospitals. “It’s a milestone for us because being accredited is not an easy thing to do,” Ruel explained. “It’s a lot of hard work, a lot of documentation and making sure we’re providing high quality medicine. The accreditation requires this high standard of medicine. It’s not just opening up the door and doing whatever we can. We’re actually doing things slightly different than many of the practices in the country.” Enjoy this article? WAYLAND AMERICAN LEGION 102 N. MAIN ST. • WAYLAND HOW TO KEEP CHICKEN FROM STICKING TO YOUR GRILL

Drive-Thru Hoagie Sale

According to the grill manufacturer Weber, the keys to grilling chicken are temperature and time. But even cooks who have paid close attention to the temperature of their grills and the time their chicken spends over a hot flame have no doubt fallen victim to chicken that sticks to the grill. This can affect the quality of a meal and make post-grilling cleanup that much more difficult. To prevent sticking, Weber advises cooks to put a light coating of olive oil and seasoning directly on the chicken prior to putting it on the grill. Once the chicken has been dressed, make sure the grill temperature remains around 425 F to 450 F. Chicken will stick to a grill if the temperature is too high, so pay close attention to the temperature at all times. Once the chicken has been placed on the grill, allow each side to cook for roughly 4.5 minutes. If the chicken is difficult to flip or remove from the grill, close the lid and allow it to cook for one additional minute.

Local dining spots also become gathering locations for residents in the know, instead of passing-through tourists or commuters.

AT-HOME NUTRITION AND COOKING WITH KIDS RECIPES FOR FUN: If you’re preparing a meal, it could be a good time to teach children of reading age how to review a recipe. Evaluating ingredients to learn how food transforms from raw to cooked or how a dish is created can help kids learn kitchen skills. FOOD GROUPS FOCUS: Get kids involved in making dinner by setting a rule that each food group must be represented. Give them a warmup activity by asking which food groups are found in family favorites like chicken soup, lasagna or meatloaf. Asking kids to guess which ingredients are used in these dishes and identifying which food group each ingredient belongs to can help them understand dietary balance.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * For a little extra visibility in the basement, try applying glow-inthe-dark or reflective tape on the edges of the stairs. * This tip will change your life when peeling eggs: After you have hard-boiled your eggs, drain and submerge in ice water. Put them back in the pot, put the lid on and shake. Shake in all directions for up to a minute. The eggs practically slip right out of their shells. Just rinse and prep. -- JoAnn * “To distinguish your keys, especially house keys that have similar stamps, simply paint the key head with different colors of nail polish. You could even add a very subtle dot of the matching polish on the key lock. Reapply as needed.” -- S.L. in Oregon * If you keep birds, here’s a reminder: Never preheat pans on high heat -- especially nonstick pans. They can let off a chemical that you or I cannot detect but can be a health hazard if your bird friend is in the kitchen area. Don’t keep birds in the kitchen when cooking. * “To mark the end on a roll of tape, save your bread tabs. Stick one on the tape end and it will be ready and easy to start the next time. If it’s a thick tape, you can use two clips -- one at either side of the tape. This way, it won’t split on you.” -- M.E. in Maryland * Use a flat iron to iron your collar if it’s rumpled. This also works to straighten out buttonholes that have crimped.

HOMETOWN TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Surgery Is Valid Option for Severe Sleep Apnea ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: My son, who is 30 years old,

1. 2. 3. 4.

Red, White & Blue Honeoye Falls A deer in Farmington! Up, Up, and Away!

was recently diagnosed with severe obstructive sleep apnea and currently uses a CPAP machine. He says does not want to use this for the rest of his life, therefore, he has researched surgery to correct his OSA. Recently he consulted with a sleep expert, and now has surgery scheduled with that doctor. My son will have a septoplasty and a palate expansion before a more radical surgery in a year called MMA. My son feels that these surgeries will give him the longest lasting cure for his OSA. I am very concerned about all of these surgeries. I value your objective opinion and hope you can give me some reassurance that these surgeries are worth the pain. -- G.M. ANSWER: Although CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure, which works by using air to keep the airway open) is the usual treatment for obstructive sleep apnea, surgery is another effective way to treat OSA. Surgery is most appropriate for those who wish a surgical solution (some people can’t stand the CPAP machine), those who have a surgically correctable problem (see below), and those who are good candidates for surgery; younger age makes surgery seem more reasonable to me. The specific surgery chosen depends on an individual’s unique anatomy. Surgery on the uvula (yes, the dangling thing at the back of the throat), soft palate and pharynx is the most common surgery, but maxillomandibular advancement surgery (MMA) has been shown to be successful in several well-known medical centers in the U.S., such as Mayo Clinic and Stanford. Success rates are high, and some studies have shown surgical cure of obstructive sleep apnea in over half of those who undergo the procedure. Not knowing your son and not being a surgeon, I can’t give an objective opinion for him in particular, but I can say that in appropriate patients, surgical treatment of OSA is reasonable.

MINIMIZE DARK CIRCLES UNDER THE EYES Racoon eyes may be a side effect of forgetting to remove mascara and other eye makeup before retiring for bed. In such instances, dark eye circles are easily remedied with cleaning pads. For those whose dark circles can’t be swept away with soap and water, dark, puffy eyes can be a cause for embarrassment or concern. Dark circles under the eyes may be a byproduct of various circumstances. Getting to the root of the problem can help women (and men) look more awake and fresh.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Listen Up: Engage Your Brain With Podcasts Have you ever listened to a podcast? A podcast is a digital audio or video file that you can access from the internet. They’re often in a series that you can tune into one at a time, almost like radio on demand. They’re usually associated with a website where you can find out what’s available and a schedule for new ones. You can listen or watch on your computer, phone or tablet, but you’ll need an app (application) if you want to download and take it with you, unless your phone has one pre-installed. One way to find entertaining podcasts is to plug one of your areas of interest into a web browser and add “podcast” to see what comes up. Or as a place to start, look at AARP’s website (www.aarp.org/ podcasts) and see what it offers. Right now, there are podcasts about various scams, protecting your finances and high prescription-drug prices, all worth a listen. Scroll to the bottom of the page for instructions. If you search the internet for podcasts, you’ll find vintage radio programs, celebrities, financial information, stories from history, news, brain stretchers, sports themes, stress reduction and so much more. There must be hundreds of thousands of podcasts out there to choose from. Try a search for “podcasts for seniors” to see what surprises pop up. Another way to keep your brain stretched is with online classes, called MOOCs, which stands for massive open online courses. There are thousands you can audit for free, attending remotely without ever leaving home. You don’t receive credit for audited classes. Coursera (www.coursera.org) is your go-to source for online learning. (At this writing, it lists 1,782 free courses from 200 universities.) Or see Edx (www.edx.org), co-founded by Harvard and MIT, for information on their 3,000 classes to audit for free. For more listings, see MOOCs at www.mooc.org. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

HOW PARENTS CAN SIMPLIFY STUDENTS’ TRANSITION TO COLLEGE LIFE Let kids fly solo on school day mornings. New college students have to make many adjustments upon moving into their dorms, and getting themselves out of bed each morning and off to class on time is one such change. Parents worried that their students will sleep in when mom and dad isn’t around to remind them to wake up can start letting kids fly solo on school day mornings during their final year of high school. Let kids set their alarms, prepare their own breakfasts and get out the door on time all on their own. By the time their freshman year of college arrives, kids will know how to handle their mornings by themselves.

S E V RA Our Deepest Gratitude On behalf of the team of people who put on the second annual chicken BBQ for the Trevor Irby Memorial Scholarship, we would like to thank you for your support. The amount of love and generosity from everyone surrounding the fundraiser filled our hearts during such a challenging time. Thanks to the success of the BBQ and all the giving donations, we were able to make a generous contribution towards the Trevor Irby Memorial scholarship. This is a cause that is very near to our hearts. During such trying times in our personal lives and in current events, it is difficult to remember that there is still so much love and compassion in the world. Thank you for helping to make this day so positive, for all the generosity towards the scholarship, and for showing such compassion and grace. You are appreciated. A special thank you to the Stewart family, a constant support and pioneer of this fundraiser. Also, a special thank you to Dr. Aguirre, Faith Gates, and Paul Teed for making all this possible. - The Warner Family Kindness to a stranger On August 27th from 10:30PM to 3:30AM, I was waiting to be taken care of at UMMC Emergency Room for injuries sustained due to a fall. A young mom with a sick two-year-old boy was also waiting to see a doctor. Having left my home in a hurry, I didn’t have any cash with me, and they didn’t allow my wife to wait with me. Using hand signals, I asked the woman to please get me a bottle of pop, and she got me a root beer. In the excitement, I neglected to make arrangements to pay her back. I would like to pay her back and let her know how much I appreciated her kindness in helping a thirsty 88-year-old man caught without any cash.

Another natural area lost Construction has started on a new low-price store in Hemlock even though there are 2 other stores of the same name within 6 miles. At the site, there was a field full of flowers that attracted many butterflies and bees and a nice little pond alive with turtles, frogs and dragonflies. Then one day, the bulldozers cleared the field, ripped down trees and filled the pond, snuffing out all life. What an absolute shame! When are we going to stop destroying our natural areas for the sake of convenience, cheap goods, profit, and a few low-paying jobs? Demand Social Security changes Those who work and have Social Security deducted should be outraged that the government uses our money for their “slush funds.” It’s our money to be used when we are retired, disabled or for family hardships. Why aren’t taxpayers demanding our Representatives manage S.S. money as it was intended? Don’t forget, they work for us, and if they aren’t representing us, they should be voted out. This abuse has been going on for many years, but still they “pickpocket” our money without taxpayer permission. Everybody should be contacting their representatives from the bottom to the top. With computers, it is easy to contact our representatives. No more rocks Why are we painting trite messages on rocks (“be kind”) and then leaving them around on the ground outside? I don’t like it. Leave the rocks alone.

Janice L. (Edmond) Hohman January 13, 2021 Marietta, GA/Wayland: Janice Lorraine (Edmond) Hohman, 72 years of age, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 13, 2021 from complications of Multiple Sclerosis.

Celebration Of Life

Janice was born on October 26, 1948 in Wayland, NY, the eighth child of Robert and Mary (Bricks) Edmond. She grew up in Perkinsville, NY. After graduating from Wayland Central School, she went on to get her BA degree in History at Nazareth College in Rochester, NY, and her Master of Medical Library Science at the University of Chicago. Upon graduation, she worked as a professional librarian for 12 years.

Janice heroically battled MS for 55 years. Though often bruised and battered by this ugly disease, she came back every time stronger and more determined. MS never defined her. Jan was fierce and stubborn. A beautiful, loving, social, and brilliant woman, she was also witty, funny, and she always retained a fine interest and knowledge of the arts, particularly music. Jan celebrated life every day; she had grand adventures all over the world, a wonderful love story, friends and family who adored her, and a profession that she loved. Janice was predeceased by her beloved husband of 38 years, Edward Hohman; her parents, Robert and Mary; four of her older sisters, Barbara Panus, Sara Fawcett, Judith Page, Kay Walsh; and by her younger brother, Jack Edmond. As well, Janice was predeceased by three brothers-in-law, Henry Panus, Wayne O’Sullivan and Toby Duckett.

Janice is survived by siblings Sue (and William) Conway of Knoxville, TN, Mary Jo O’Sullivan of Amherst, NY, Robert Edmond of Fayetteville, PA, Teresa (and Thomas) Coffey of Powder Springs, GA and Irene (and Michael) Rosenberg of New Paltz, NY. She is survived by brothers-in-law, Arthur Page and Norbert Walsh, and sisters-inlaw, Millie Edmond, Heidi Hohman and Bonnie Duckett. Janice was also the proud and loving aunt of 34 nieces and nephews and their partners, even more great-nieces and nephews and their partners, and more than a few great-great nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place Friday, September 17, 2021 at 11am at Sacred Heart Church in Perkinsville. Interment will take place immediately following at Sacred Heart Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Janice’s honor to Sacred Heart Cemetery, 206 Fremont St., Wayland, NY 14572 or the charity or cause close to your heart. (585) 384-5736 THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB Commute: Bending over backwards simply to get to work and then get home from work can have an incredibly negative impact on your life. A study from the Office of National Statistics in the United Kingdom found that commuters, especially those who spend between 60 and 90 minutes commuting to work, have lower life satisfaction and lower levels of happiness compared to people who don’t commute. Before accepting a job offer, estimate your commute time to and from the new office and try to determine the impact of that commute on your quality of life.

IMPROVE ALERTNESS DURING THE WORKDAY Change your workout schedule. Regular exercise improves shortand long-term health while also increasing daily energy levels. Professionals who include exercise in their daily routines yet still suffer from a lack of alertness in the afternoon may need to alter their workout schedules. A 2011 study published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine found that participants who were assigned afternoon exercise programs during work hours reported increased productivity versus those who were not assigned afternoon workouts. If working out in the afternoon is not feasible, avoid working out too late at night, as the National Institutes of Health note that exercising within two to three hours of bedtime can disrupt sleep, ultimately having a negative impact on energy levels the following day. WAYS ESTABLISHED PROFESSIONALS CAN IMPROVE THEIR RÉSUMÉS Rather than focusing on job responsibilities at each job you held, gear the résumé around what you achieved in each position. This will help identify how you performed in the position, instead of just a general retelling of what you did. It can be challenging to achieve this for jobs that don’t naturally lend themselves to numerically quantitative results (i.e., increased department sales by 15 percent), but it’s still possible to use a résumé to illustrate your achievements. Rather than state that you were responsible for providing customer service, explain that you built your reputation on conveying difficult technical terms to the layperson, serving as the go-to employee for translating job jargon for outside correspondence. If you have quantitative proof of how you accomplished something, certainly add it. This can include measures of profit growth, reduction of debt or increase in customer base.

DID YOU KNOW? Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures. EMPLOYMENT

To apply: http://www.a-d.us HOW TO NEGOTIATE (AND GET) A SALARY INCREASE Don’t share why you want the raise. When discussing a potential raise, keep it about business and avoid personal reasons. You’re more likely to get the raise if you keep personal reasons (i.e. bills piling up, school expenses, family vacations) out of the mix. Maintain your professionalism during the discussion. Otherwise, you may risk losing your boss’s respect.

Research the job market. Look into the industries for the field you are considering. Is it the right time for success in this field? Industries tend to ebb and flow. Do not leave a job only to find the next career has few, if any, openings. Job growth projections are available through resources like the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

CONSERVE ENERGY AROUND THE OFFICE Conservation methods can help save energy and preserve natural resources, but business owners may also be intrigued by the potential cost-savings of conservation. Utility costs vary depending on the size of a business, but the U.S. Small Business Administration notes that prospective business owners must estimate and include such costs when seeking loans to start their businesses. Estimated utility costs can be intimidating, especially for those owners who have never before owned their own businesses. Traditional conservation methods like recycling and reusing are great ways to conserve and save around the office, but business owners also can embrace some other ways to lower their office energy costs while benefitting the planet at the same time.

Managing one’s time can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. As a result, adults with hectic schedules and multiple responsibilities may pine for an extra hour or two in the day. While it’s impossible to extend a day from 24 to 26 hours, there are ways for busy men and women to create more time in their day. 1. Embrace organization tools. Whether it’s day planners, smartphone reminders or more traditional print calendars with meetings and deadlines written on them, organization tools can greatly cut back on time spent trying to remember and/or confirm meeting times, project schedules, deadlines, and other obligations. 2. Assess your productivity. Some people are most productive in the mornings, while others do not hit their strides until after lunch. Identify the time or times of day when you tend to be most productive, and make an effort to focus exclusively on work during these times. Resist any urge to schedule meetings or conference calls during those times of day when you are most productive, as it can be hard to multitask or focus when discussing projects with coworkers or clients. 3. Minimize distractions. Social media, the internet and texting can distract attention away from tasks that must be completed, ultimately affecting how quickly and efficiently such projects are finished. Make a concerted effort to avoid social media and the internet while at work, and turn off smartphone alerts that entice you to go online. In addition, turn off text alerts if they are proving too great a distraction. 4. Reconsider your commute. Professionals who drive to work but find themselves sitting in traffic on their way to and from work can investigate possible alternatives to driving themselves. Public transportation might not get you to work more quickly than driving yourself, but time spent on a bus or train can be used to work on projects and check and answer work-related emails, clearing up time later in the day. Time spent behind the wheel of an automobile cannot be safely spent working.
