On September 15, 2003, author and illustrator of children’s books, Peter H. Reynolds released his book “The Dot.” In the story, Vashti felt like she couldn’t draw — but her art teacher wouldn’t accept that. “Just make a mark, and see where it takes you,” the teacher said to Vashti. So, she marked her parchment paper with a small dot. The next day, Vashti was surprised to find her paper with the dot on the classroom wall.

Vashti was so proud of her work that she started creating drawings with different kinds of dots.

International Dot Day, September 15, is celebrated by adults and children for boosting courage so that their creative potential is released. It is a great day to connect and collaborate, and also to celebrate self-expression.

On the whole I take it that middle age is a happier period than youth. In the entire circle of the year there are no days so delightful as those of a fine October, when the trees are bare to the mild heavens, and the red leaves bestrew the road, and you can feel the breath of winter morning and evening—no days so calm, so tenderly solemn, and with such a reverent meekness in the air.

~Alexander Smith (1829–1867), “An Essay on an Old Subject”

Note Left on My Car

To whoever left a note on my car under the windshield wiper, you have done the right thing. You said, “I accidentally backed into your car. I’m so sorry. I checked everywhere on both cars and it appeared there was no damage.” and you left your phone number. Thank you! We need many more people like you in the world - people who are respectful of others’ property and take responsibility for their actions when they have an accident. You could’ve just as easily ran off, but you took responsibility for your error and did the right thing. By the way, I checked everything and there was no damage.

Thank you!

The Sunday before Labor Day, I had a fish dinner and coffee for lunch in the Canal View Restaurant in Newark. When I asked for my bill, I was told the couple at the table next to my booth had paid it. They had already left so I couldn’t thank them. Hopefully they will see this and know how much I appreciate it. Thank you so much! How thoughtful!

Youth Football

Hey youth football team. Want to know why your numbers are down? You might want to look internally at the coaches of these kids. They do not make it fun and they are obviously only coaching for their own kids. They are more concerned about statistics of YOUTH FOOTBALL players and making highlight films and posting these so -called stats on social media touting how great they are. What about the other players, the average players or the players who are on the fence about playing.? This is what youth football should be about, making a connection with ALL the players. Is the board really afraid of the coaches? Is this why they will not speak up? Bring back small town football......please!!

DINING OUT WITH INFANTS

New parents often need a respite from the near-constant demands of infants. Dining out can be one of those breaks. When a babysitter is unavailable or if you’re not yet comfortable leaving a little one with someone else, bringing baby along may be possible.

First, find a family-friendly restaurant or try an establishment that has outdoor seating where you can quickly distance yourself from other diners if need be. Time dining out around the baby’s feeding and sleeping schedule. Babies sated by a recent feeding and a relaxing car ride may be more inclined to sleep through your restaurant meal. Just in case, pack an extra bottle or prepare to breastfeed to keep your baby happy.

GET CREATIVE WITH APPLES THIS FALL

Serves 6 to 8

2 to 3 tablespoons

unsalted butter

2 pounds apples, eeled, cored and cut into thick slices

1/2 cup honey, preferably sage honey

1/2 cup white wine

Zest of 1 lemon

Juice of 1 lemon

Fresh sage sprigs for garnish

1. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the apples, turn the heat to high and sauté until they begin to brown on the edges, about 5 minutes. If some are getting too well done, remove them and place on a plate while the rest continue to cook, then return them to the skillet when all are done.

2. Reduce the heat to low and add the honey, wine, lemon zest, lemon juice, and 1/2 cup water. Cover and allow to cook until the apples are tender but still firm; you don’t want them to turn into applesauce.

3. Serve this in a bowl, tuck in a couple sprigs of fresh sage from your garden, and tell your guests all about sage honey.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

Suspecting and Diagnosing Hereditary Hemochromatosis

DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband was diagnosed with hemochromatosis 13 months before he died. I recommended that his blood relatives get tested so they can get treatment early, if necessary. Some doctors don’t know to check ferritin levels to make a diagnosis in a person with a family history of hemochromatosis. -- C.G.

ANSWER: Hereditary hemochromatosis (HHC) is a genetic disease of iron overload. In a person with HHC, the intestines absorb as much iron as they can all the time, even if the body doesn’t need it, whereas a person without HHC will simply stop absorbing iron if it isn’t necessary. The iron can go into and damage many organs, especially the liver, heart, bone marrow, hormone-producing glands and skin.

The diagnosis should be suspected in close relatives of an affected person. Although checking ferritin levels is useful in making the diagnosis, iron tests, total iron-binding capacity tests and hemoglobin tests should also be ordered. If the family member has a recognized genetic mutation, such as C282Y homozygote or C282Y/H63D compound heterozygote, those genetic tests may also be useful in making the diagnosis.

The diagnosis should even be suspected in people with vague symptoms, such as weakness and fatigue. I teach my students and residents to consider the possibility of iron overload, as it is common, easily tested for, and easily treated with phlebotomy (blood removal). Symptomatic HHC is more common at an earlier age in men than women, but it still should be considered in younger women.

A clinician should also consider iron overload in people with enlarged livers or abnormal liver enzymes, diabetes, changes in skin tone (bronze or gray), heart failure and some kinds of arthritis. Most people with these conditions do not have HHC, but initial testing is cheap and easy.

Treatment can be done by donating blood. My first patient with HHC donated over 100 units of blood before his blood levels came down to the target range.

PAW’S CORNER

How long do rabbits live?

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have a pet rabbit, Brownie, who is nearly 10 years old! He’s a Holland Lop, I think. He doesn’t do much at this age but sort of half-heartedly flop around his cage and the porch, then he settles onto the raised shelf in his cage and nibbles on carrots. He seems healthy, just slow. How much longer does he have le ? Do you think he’s lonely? -- Vicky R., Macon, Georgia

DEAR VICKY: First of all, wow! Ten years is quite a lifespan for a Holland Lop. It’s a testament to how well you care for him.

While the average lifespan of this rabbit breed is six to eight years, I have heard of H-Lops reaching 10, 12 or even 16 years of age! Care and comfort are really important for rabbits at any age. ey need a secure hutch, stable temperatures in summer and winter, fresh water always available, and good nutrition. ey also need things to gnaw on so their front teeth don’t grow too long, as well as plenty of fresh vegetables.

Introducing a new rabbit to the mix can be risky. ey might not take to each other, and fighting with another rabbit can cause stress, which can be deadly.

It sounds like Brownie is doing really well for his age. I recommend checking in with his vet if you notice any changes in his behavior or ability to get around. It sounds like you’re a little concerned that he isn’t moving around as much. Contacting the vet within 48 hours is a good rule for any changes in behavior, diet or activity for rabbits and other small pets.

Assuming it is mold or fungus on the soil of the Christmas cactus, that usually indicates it is being watered too much so the soil remains moist, which allows mold to grow. It would help to see the mold to be sure. Contact your

local Cooperative Extension for analysis. An alternate possibility is that the area where the plant is located has high humidity which could also encourage a fungus or mold.

STEPS INVOLVED WITH ESTATE PLANNING

An aspect of estate planning concerns funeral arrangements. Many people prefer to make their own funeral and burial plans so that these heart-wrenching decisions do not fall on the shoulders of grieving family members. Funeral planning may include choosing a burial plot, selecting a casket, indicating cremation, and paying for everything in advance so there is no financial burden on surviving family members.

MEMORIAL GIFTS HONOR LOVED ONES

he loss of a friend or loved one is seldom easy, particularly if a person had been suffering from an illness. Close friends and family honor the memories of their deceased loved ones in different ways. Charitable giving can be a great way to honor a loved one’s memory while helping others. Survivors often find comfort in the knowledge that they can do good in the name of a loved one. Tributes or memorial gifts can be approached in different ways and serve as an ongoing reminder of a deceased loved one. Create a charitable foundation: Those who have the time and resources can establish their own charitable groups in the decedent’s name. This method of charity requires the most time and effort, but can prove to be quite an impactful memorial. Individuals who would like to go this route can consult with financial and tax professionals about the best way to establish a charitable group.

Community foundation: Families can focus on something their loved one cared deeply about, such as animal rescue, children, the arts, or even particular places in a community - such as a local park. According to CarePages, a company that produces free patient websites and offers community support for those coping with illness, families can choose to have their donations funneled to specific charities or nonprofit groups. Otherwise, funds can be allocated to a third party community fund that will distribute money to various organizations no matter where they are located.

Medical tribute: Memorial gifts that assist medical associations or groups working to find cures or offer treatments for diseases are quite popular. If a loved one passed away due to a specific illness, it is common to ask for donations to a specific organization that specializes in information and services pertaining to that illness. Many such groups have a “donate in memory” option on their websites. Oftentimes families are notified regarding who made memorial donations in their loved ones’ names, but the amount of the donation need not be revealed.

Personal intentions: Those who would like to make a donation but cannot think of a charity to associate with their deceased loved one have a host of options at their disposal. Consider donating to a school or library, requesting materials be purchased in the decedent’s name. Otherwise, donate to a general scholarship fund, possibly at the decedent’s alma mater.

Finish their work: If the decedent was engaged in a charitable project prior to their death, volunteer to help complete that project.

Giving back after the death of a loved one is a great way to keep the memory of that person alive.

Dansville- Richard A Rider, 73, of Dansville, NY, passed away at home following a lengthy illness on September 10, 2023.

Richard (aka Dick and Rich) was born on May 3, 1950, in Buffalo, NY. He was a vibrant and energetic person who lived life to the fullest. He was caring, thoughtful, and always willing to help no matter what was asked of him.

Richard had a passion for classic cars and riding Harleys and found joy in the freedom of the open road and the camaraderie of fellow riders. He was an active member of Conesus Lake Riders where he served as President for many years. Dick developed the idea of having the motorcycle club raffle off a motorcycle each year as a part of their fundraising efforts in support of Camp Good Days and Special Times, Teresa House and other local charitable causes. He believed in making a difference in the lives of others and dedicated much of his time and resources to that in so many ways. When his sons were young, Dick, who was a proud Eagle Scout himself, became a Boy Scout leader for many years, leading his scouts on many camping trips and other adventures.

Dick was a life member of the Union Hose and devoted many active years to that organization, responding to fires and also running on the Union Hose Motorized Competition drill team after he and his team members built the competition truck. Later, he became involved in the Dansville Ambulance Corp. and became a volunteer EMT. As with everything he took on, he was passionate about the work and also served in a volunteer EMT capacity at Atofina, both as a trainer of other staff in first aid and emergency response and as a part of the emergency response team. His teaching talent was manifested again some years later when started an environmental inspecting career related to construction. In addition to environmental inspections for lead-based paint and asbestos, he taught classes on the subjects, helping contractors and others to recognize risk and address it safely. For many years after he retired, he still received calls from people asking him to teach classes.

Richard’s zest for life and adventurous spirit will forever be remembered by those who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of kindness, generosity, and love will continue to inspire us. He had the ability to take on challenges of any kind and produce something wonderful, whether it was remodeling a home, planning an extended trip to far locations or a fund-raising event for a good cause. When he got an idea, he did whatever it took to make the idea become reality. He always believed in achieving the possible and everything was possible to him.

Richard will be deeply missed by Lee Ann, by his beloved wife of 52 years; his sons, Kevin and Brian (Danielle); his sister, Joanne Hyson; his brother, Joe (Laura) Rider; his sister, Sarah Wagner; and his grandchildren, Dustin, Ethan, Aidan, Cassidy, Micaiah, and Ayla Rider, Brendon Freeman and Abby Harrington and daughter by foreign exchange, Lillian Lordal Amnered. He is also survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends across the US.

Please join us in Dick’s Celebration of Life on Saturday, September 23rd at his home in Sparta (8286 Logan Rd. Dansville.) starting at 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests any donations be made to Camp Good Days and Special Times in Richard’s memory. Online remembrances may be left at HindleFuneralHome.com.

Lilies

The flower most commonly associated with funeral services in the popular mind is the lily. Lilies are often interpreted as a symbol of the innocence that has been restored to the soul of the departed. A white stargazer lily symbolizes sympathy and any type of white lily expresses majesty and purity.

Empowering Tomorrow’s Marksmen: Tim Moore’s Reflection on Livonia’s Trap Shooting Club

In the heart of Livonia, where the echoes of camaraderie and the crack of gunfire meld, Tim Moore and Bob Warner mentor a new generation of marksmen with Livonia High School’s trap shooting club. eir mission? To instill not only the art of precise shooting, but a profound respect for safety, sportsmanship, and the great outdoors. Amidst the rolling terrain, young minds find sanctuary—a place where they learn to master the trigger safely. Each year, the Livonia club draws in a substantial 30-40 student participants. During their seasons, the main shoot takes place on Sundays, where every student shoots five times at each of five stations over two rounds, scoring up to 50 points. Some students consistently achieve impressive scores of 10-12 per round, while others reach even higher with 23/24. A few students even earn an average of 48 or 49 each week, a feat Tim openly admires, acknowledging that even he can’t compete with such consistency. Annually, the Livonia club sends 14-17 skilled students to compete in States in Syracuse, followed by Nationals in Michigan.

Leading the Livonia Trap Shooting Club for several years now, Tim assumed this role when his daughter expressed an interest in the sport. His involvement extends to sportsmen’s clubs in Conesus, Hemlock, and Wayland, with special mention of his contributions to organizing BINGO games and other fundraisers that help cover expenses for youth attending DEC camp, essential support for a club that entails significant costs, with firearms costing between $500 to $1,500 each.

In 2019, when Tim first took the reins, 29 schools were involved statewide. Now, he notes that this number has tripled. Tim attributes this growth to a rising understanding that firearms can be used responsibly for both recreation and sustenance.

field’s layout, expectations, and the format of practices and events. e coaches then meticulously inspect the firearms, ensuring a structured and secure environment. Tim underscores the parents’ consistent satisfaction with the club’s unyielding focus on safety. Since its inception, Tim says there have been zero injuries; even with 2100-3000 kids at competitions, there are no injuries.

e enthusiasm of the students propels Tim to continue coaching, even as his daughter went off to college. He finds immense joy in keeping the kids engaged and active outdoors, away from screens and video games. It’s a space where all backgrounds and affiliations converge, united in their shared pursuit of learning, shooting, and experiencing life together. e club cultivates camaraderie, good sportsmanship, and above all, safety.

Tim’s most cherished aspect of leading the club lies in its diversity. It’s not limited to any specific demographic. Within these club grounds, everyone supports one another; there are no divisions or cliques. Age is irrelevant, as every member cheers on their peers, creating an atmosphere of unity and encouragement.

As Tim aptly notes, this camaraderie is emblematic of sportsmen’s clubs across the region. ey function as extended families, rallying support for their members as well as those of neighboring clubs. For aspiring marksmen, Tim imparts simple yet invaluable advice: prioritize safety above all, practice consistently, and enjoy the process. He urges marksmen to refrain from being overly critical of themselves. Instead, embrace the journey, he says, understanding that proficiency comes with time and dedication, much like bowling and other sports.

For additional information on clubs in your area, visit nyclaytarget.com

To truly grasp the club’s impact, one must witness it in action, Tim insists. Even parents initially hesitant about their children’s participation have visited and been reassured of its safety measures. From the beginning, the club places an unwavering emphasis on safety. Prior to their first meeting, all participants must complete an online safety course. During their initial gathering, firearms remain absent as the group familiarizes themselves with the

Here’s a tip

* “Just a er Labor Day, our family starts to think about who will host holiday dinners and such. We do it in a lottery. Whoever just hosted is exempt if they want to be. e rest of those who’d like to host a holiday event put their names in a pot, and we pick out names. e events are the usuals, like Christmas and anksgiving, but also a cookie-making party and the children’s party. It’s better than one person always having to do it or always getting to do it.” -- E.D. in Massachusetts

* If you are getting your outdoor furniture ready for storage, here’s a great cleaning idea. Load it all in the back of a truck, take it to a self-serve car wash and clean with the pressure hoses. Let dry, and it’s ready.

* “Dust books with a vacuum assist! I put the leg of a pantyhose over my vacuum wand and secure tightly. en I dust my bookshelves, holding the wand close by to suck up the dust that gets disturbed. It’s less messy, I think. I still dust from the top down.” -- L.K. in Ohio

RAKING LEAVES: While raking leaves might not jump out at you as a great way to spend a nice fall afternoon, families often find raking leaves together soon turns into a fun day in the yard. Build leaf piles and let the kids jump in, and then do it again. When raking, encourage kids to collect some colorful leaves and set them aside. Once the raking is done, you can then enjoy making some homemade crafts with the leaves you and your youngsters just collected.

Hi Community!

Your Centers has permanently opened as of Monday, September 11th.

OPEN: MONDAY-FRIDAY 9AM TO 3PM.

We have our contract in place. We are accepting new clients. I will be holding an informational meeting Tuesday, September 19th at 6pm. is is for anyone in our community who would like to come in and learn about our program.

Why is dementia care important? Learn about the positive effects of socialization for the elderly, less fortunate and disabled.

GREAT WEEKEND GETAWAY IDEAS

Soak up the city lights. Big cities tend to clear out on summer weekends, which can make this an ideal time to visit. City visitors won’t have to contend with the sizable crowds that descend on metropolises in winter, when indoor entertainment is in high demand. That means savvy travelers also may find discounts on live theater and local concerts. It also won’t be as difficult to book reservations at the latest culinary hotspots, particularly for travelers who book early.

HOME HEATING &

CONDITIONING

GET YOUR HOME FALL- AND WINTER-READY

Save your property from potential damage by trimming overgrown trees andshrubstopreventice-ladenbranchesfromthrashingagainstelectrical wires and your home’s exterior. Drain/shut off any exterior faucets and sprinkler systems to prevent freezing. Ensure rain or snow drains away from the house to avoid foundation problems.

SIMPLE WAYS TO WINTERIZE YOUR HOME

Leaky windows and doorways can cost homeowners money year-round, allowing cold air to escape on hot summer afternoons and letting cold air in on brisk winter nights. When such leaks aren’t fixed, homeowners are more liable to turn up their air conditioners or heaters, unnecessarily padding their energy bills along the way. Before winter arrives, check areas around windows and door frames for leaks, as well as any additional openings, such as chimneys, that may allow cold air in. Use caulk or weather strips to plug these leaks, and enjoy your warmer home and lower energy bills as winter weather gets colder and colder.

DID YOU KNOW? Spinal muscular atrophy, or SMA, is the most common cause of mortality in infants. According to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, SMA is a motor neuron disease that affects the central nervous system, peripheral nervous system and voluntary muscle movement. WebMD notes that the severity of SMA varies widely, but the disease is known to weaken muscles and can cause difficulty eating, breathing and walking. In the past, infants diagnosed with SMA typically did not survive more than two years, but the MDA notes that doctors now prefer to avoid making rigid predictions on life expectancy based strictly on age of onset.

RELIEVE STRESS THROUGHOUT THE DAY

Walk away. The APA notes that taking a break from a stressor is one of a handful of healthy techniques that research has indicated is a successful way to reduce stress, both in the short- and long-term. If a project at work is proving especially stressful, step away for a short period of time to do something else, whether it’s to go for a brief walk or converse with a coworker about something unrelated to the project. Avoiding the stress entirely, especially if it’s a work project or a bill that must be paid, is not the answer. But a short break from the stressor and thinking about it can provide a new perspective and time to calm down.
