Your Centers of Dansville Expands to Meet Growing Need BY AMANDA K. DUDEK
M
any in her community know that friend and neighbor Tina Markle is a force to be reckoned with. Thankfully, she uses her powerful determination and drive for good. Markle, founder of Your Centers in Dansville, has not only reopened her popular center, but she has also launched a new free “store” and raised an incredible number of supplies for communities recently hit hard by local flooding. Your Centers Day Respite Program is located on Main Street in Dansville, and the business specializes in helping individuals requiring managed long-term care. However, the doors are open to everyone, says Markle, adding that they serve breakfast, lunch, and snacks. Thanks to the effects of the pandemic, the center has been busy. “People feel free to come and spend the day with us,” she said. “They need a place to stay warm, especially with winter coming. Many in need of care do not have it at this time, so for now, they can enroll here for free.” It was in continuing to serve the community at Your Centers that Markle became aware of even greater need. “During COVID, when we served free meals, so many people needed help with basic necessities like clothing. I used to go and purchase some at our local Salvation Army store nearby, but then we lost it. So, I thought we would just start our own store in the back of where our program is, and we did. But when we reopened, we needed the space, so I moved it to my storage building next door.” Soon, the free store grew larger than Markle had ever imagined, drawing people in need from as far away as Hornell and Rochester. Though the need is truly great, the generosity of the local community is even greater, bringing in more donations than Markle had ever expected. So much so, in fact, that she is running out of room. “It has grown beyond belief!” she exclaimed. “We have men’s, women’s, children’s, and infant’s clothing, sneakers, linens, dishes, microwaves, cribs, walkers, strollers... so many things. We also have a lending closet for medical equipment such as hospital beds. I never in a million years thought it would turn into what it has.”
their time and resources to the center, the store, and flood relief. “Without volunteers and the community, this could not happen,” she said. “They are incredible!” Along with volunteers and the community, Tina Markle credits her mother for her service to others. “Last February, we lost my mom to COVID,” she Full shelves at Markle’s free store shared. “She is my strength welcome those in need! and the reason for all of this. Her name was Joann Cox, and she had a heart of gold. My dad passed away young, and she raised us five kids on her own until she remarried when I, the youngest, was about 15 or 16 years old.” Despite this hardship and the three jobs she worked to overcome it, Joann was always warm and generous. “My mom would give the shirt off her back to anybody. She was always baking cookies for people and visiting people in the nursing home. She was everybody’s mom in the neighborhood; kids would call her ‘mom.’ She took care of everybody. She would give her last dollar to people in need.” Inspired by her mother’s spirit and example, Tina Markle began taking care of those around her, as well, through Your Centers. Joann was more than happy to join her. “She just loved it,” shared Markle. “She started making the baked goods and making lap blankets, hats, booties, and afghans. My mom loved giving. She was a wonderful, wonderful, woman.” Markle now finds strength in her family and friends. “My daughter, Meghan, is here at the center every day, and my daughter-in-law is helping out, as well,” she said. “I am so thankful for the people who come in. Since I lost my mom, they have become like family to me. I keep going because I know they will be waiting. It helps to know what we do is making such a difference in people’s lives.”
It was not long after her free store began to thrive that the floods arrived, (l) and her daughter, severely impacting several nearby Joann Cox Tina Markle (r) communities. Markle knew she had to help. She decided to gather donations for those in flooded areas.
Visit Your Center on Facebook for upcoming events, including Markle’s Haunted Trail in Springwater!
“We had our volunteers put a Facebook post up,” she explained. “Donations began pouring in. Our community is amazing! Without them, this huge collection of supplies wouldn’t exist. We have totes of schools supplies, backpacks, socks, blankets, and all kinds of brand-new items – just thousands of dollars’ worth of stuff from the community.” She paused, still in awe. “We literally had to ask the community to pause because we didn’t have enough volunteers to get it all out to families in need!”
• Perinton Historical Society’s House Tours are Back...Virtually!
Markle and her fellow volunteers have been taking loads of supplies to as many groups and communities as possible, including flooded neighborhoods, impacted Amish communities, and Rochester’s homeless camp. She credits the selfless men and women who donate

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * If you had to pick a “standard” pencil color, you’d probably think of a yellow-gold shade -- and that’s no accident. When pencils went into mass production in the 1890s, the finest available graphite fillings came from China. Manufacturers wanted everyone to know that they used only the best Chinese graphite, so they painted their pencils yellow, the traditional color of Chinese royalty.

DID YOU KNOW?
REAL ESTATE SECTION
Prospective real estate investors who hope to buy, hold and rent out their investment properties should first interview potential property managers before buying homes. While it’s possible to find property managers willing to manage single-family homes or duplexes, the financial resource Bankrate.com notes that many property managers prefer to manage large apartment complexes instead. Managing properties is hard work, and without skilled property managers on their side, real estate investors may become overwhelmed by the responsibilities of taking care of their real estate investments while simultaneously trying to maintain their own residences. Before buying investment properties, prospective real estate investors should interview various local property managers or property management firms, inquiring about their fees and what is included in those fees. If the cost of hiring property managers drastically cuts into the profits investors hoped to make off their investment properties, they might be better off looking to invest their money in areas other than real estate. Prospective investors can compare the potential return on investment after the cost of property managers has been factored in to the return they might get from more traditional investments to determine if investing in real estate is a sound financial decision.

SAFELY REMOVING FALLEN LEAVES Use the proper gear. A leaf rake fans out like a triangle and comes in various widths. Choose a lightweight material that can be easily maneuvered. A metal rake is for stones and dirt and shouldn’t be used for leaves. To get between bushes, a smaller version of a leaf rake, called a shrub rake, should be used. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * If you need to pick up small shards of glass, use a cotton ball that’s been moistened, or a slice of white bread (insides only) wadded up. * Glass and chrome will shine if you clean them with newspaper. You can mist the paper with water first, but not too much. Rub ... and the shine comes right out, plus no streaks or lint!
LEAF PEEPING PLANNING GUIDE Peak viewing times Areas of the northern-most latitude will start to show color earlier than more southern areas. Generally speaking, the leaf-viewing season begins in late September and runs through early November for much of North America. Peak times for viewing depend on areas of travel and time of year. For large swaths of Canada and the United States, plan trips for late-September to mid-October. The Weather Channel offers maps and charts at www.weather.com/maps/fall-foliage for the peak times for many areas of the U.S.
* “Use purified water in your coffeemaker to lengthen its life. Water deposits build up and affect both the flavor and function of your machine. They can be cleaned, but it’s much better if you use purified drinking water from a jug. It makes it very easy to fill the machine, too.” -- M.E. in Wyoming * “Purchase colorful laundry baskets for each child in your home. In the evening, you can have the child find all his or her stray items, put them in the basket and then put them away. In our house, the kids also use their basket to hold anything they need for school the next day -- backpack, coats and outerwear, even boots. We stack the baskets by the door, and nothing gets left behind.” -P.W. in Missouri * When you are frying up ground beef, add a tablespoon or two of water. It will help the excess grease to pull away from the meat, making it easier to drain off. * “To speed the healing of bruises, try eating pineapple. Drink lots of water, too. I play contact sports, and this has always helped me.” -- R.E. in Missouri

(585) 728-2100 General eulogy preparation tips: * Eulogies are for the living, and for everyone at a remembrance service. * Be brief. People listen for three to five minutes. After five minutes, people stop listening. * Do a bit of research. Talk to others. What are some childhood memories? Was there a favorite lesson learned? Was there a favorite quote or an inspiring song? What was the deceased like at work? What were some favorite accomplishments? * Write out the eulogy. Even if you are an experienced speaker, during the emotional time of a rememberance service it is especially easy to wander. * Write and speak from the heart. Be yourself. * Practice the eulogy. Time it. Rehearse in front of an audience (one or two people). Listen to their feedback. Edit. Practice again. * Have a back-up plan. In case you are unable to begin or finish, have someone else prepared to deliver the eulogy for you.
MEMORIAL GIFTS HONOR LOVED ONES he loss of a friend or loved one is seldom easy, particularly if a person had been suffering from an illness. Close friends and family honor the memories of their deceased loved ones in different ways. Charitable giving can be a great way to honor a loved one’s memory while helping others. Survivors often find comfort in the knowledge that they can do good in the name of a loved one. Tributes or memorial gifts can be approached in different ways and serve as an ongoing reminder of a deceased loved one. Create a charitable foundation: Those who have the time and resources can establish their own charitable groups in the decedent’s name. This method of charity requires the most time and effort, but can prove to be quite an impactful memorial. Individuals who would like to go this route can consult with financial and tax professionals about the best way to establish a charitable group. Community foundation: Families can focus on something their loved one cared deeply about, such as animal rescue, children, the arts, or even particular places in a community - such as a local park. According to CarePages, a company that produces free patient websites and offers community support for those coping with illness, families can choose to have their donations funneled to specific charities or nonprofit groups. Otherwise, funds can be allocated to a third party community fund that will distribute money to various organizations no matter where they are located. Medical tribute: Memorial gifts that assist medical associations or groups working to find cures or offer treatments for diseases are quite popular. If a loved one passed away due to a specific illness, it is common to ask for donations to a specific organization that specializes in information and services pertaining to that illness. Many such groups have a “donate in memory” option on their websites. Oftentimes families are notified regarding who made memorial donations in their loved ones’ names, but the amount of the donation need not be revealed. Personal intentions: Those who would like to make a donation but cannot think of a charity to associate with their deceased loved one have a host of options at their disposal. Consider donating to a school or library, requesting materials be purchased in the decedent’s name. Otherwise, donate to a general scholarship fund, possibly at the decedent’s alma mater. Finish their work: If the decedent was engaged in a charitable project prior to their death, volunteer to help complete that project. Giving back after the death of a loved one is a great way to keep the memory of that person alive.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Recreation Center Shuttered Again Well, that certainly didn’t last long. My town’s recreation center opened last week for indoor walking only -- no classes, no basketball, no anything else -- then shut down again just as quickly. It seemed like it would be safe: only a certain number allowed into the building at one time, no walking with a buddy, walking by yourself in one lane on the track, enter the building at your designated time and leave when your time is up. What could go wrong? What went wrong was the Mask Police. We’re supposed to be able to exercise without a mask. Except, cried the Mask Police, we would be exercising indoors. Indoors equals need for masks. I hear it was a very heated board meeting, with those on opposing sides quite vocal in presenting their cases. The anti-mask contingent was adamant that it was dangerous to ask us to mask up while exercising. The Mask Police insisted that COVID-positive people would be exhaling germs all over the rec center. They even brought charts and graphs. In the end, the rec center supervisor threw his hands in the air and declared the center closed for the foreseeable future. Meanwhile, there’s a bright spot on the horizon for this winter. The local senior center is once again hosting the Senior Health Fair. The purpose of the annual event is to link seniors with resources in the area. Companies and providers sign up to showcase their wares and offerings, including housing, products aimed at seniors, fitness, legal help, the fire department, senior-living retirement communities, the YMCA, medical services, athome nurse visits and much more. This year, however, like last year, it will all be online. Each exhibitor will have videos and “live” online events that seniors can “visit” via computer. There will be entertainment, but unfortunately, no snack tables.
This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Brewer’s Yeast and Pet Allergies DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read an article that says brewer’s yeast is safe for cats and dogs. I disagree. I found several more articles online that say pets can be allergic to brewer’s yeast. What do you say about that? -- Carla L, via email DEAR CARLA: Pet owners should always research and evaluate the risks of any supplement for their pets. Brewer’s yeast is a mainstay for owners trying to find a natural flea control treatment, and others swear that its blend of B vitamins makes their pets healthier. It has been found that brewer’s yeast created for humans often contains ingredients like garlic and onions that are downright toxic to pets. Owners should purchase only brewer’s yeast formulated for dogs or cats, as PetMD notes (www.petmd. com/dog/nutrition/brewers-yeast-dogs-understanding-benefits-and-risks). Here are some other tips for picking the right brewer’s yeast: -- Give only the amount recommended for your pet’s size. -- Brewer’s yeast that has been “de-bittered” lacks chromium, a mineral that helps regulate blood sugar in humans but hasn’t been studied in dogs. -- Read the label carefully: Some brewer’s yeast for pets contains garlic, which can be toxic, especially for smaller pets. -- Consider a brewer’s yeast that includes omega-3 oils for added benefits. -- This supplement can add up to 80 calories to your pet’s meal. It can also cause excess gas. Some pets really are allergic to the yeast itself, though. Avoid giving brewer’s yeast to dogs with known yeast allergy, who have digestive illnesses like colitis, or who are immunocompromised. Always monitor your pet for new behaviors or symptoms after giving them any new supplement.

Estrogen Insert May Help With Bladder Problems ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an 83-year-old female with bladder problems. I get up two or three times a night and usually make it to the bathroom. I thought it would be good to see a doctor in case the problem got worse. An operation was mentioned, which I am not interested in, so they gave me a pessary, which has been good and bad. It is comfortable and I don’t have to use the bathroom as often, but now I don’t get bathroom warnings and don’t always make it to the bathroom. I also leak urine with coughs and sneezes, which didn’t happen before. Now the doctor wants me to use Imvexxy inserts. After reading the side effects, I’m not sure that’s a good thing to do. What are your thoughts: Is the Imvexxy necessary? The side effects really scare me. -- Anon. ANSWER: You have symptoms of both urge incontinence (the sensation of needing to get to the bathroom right away to avoid an accident) and stress incontinence (losing urine with abdominal pressure, such as cough or sneeze). It is possible that you have two separate problems. However, loss of estrogen can cause the lining of the vagina and vulva to thin. This includes the urethra, which provides conscious control over urinary flow. It needs estrogen to close optimally, and older women often have stress or urge incontinence (or both, which is called mixed) due to lack of estrogen. Imvexxy (estradiol) is a low-dose estrogen preparation inserted in the vagina, usually daily for two weeks then twice weekly thereafter. It is a very reasonable choice for women with symptoms of urge or stress incontinence and who have findings of estrogen loss on physical exam. The low dose makes side effects uncommon (in the initial trial of 764 women, there were no adverse effects that happened in women using estradiol at greater frequency than in the placebo group). ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2021 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

The human papillomavirus, often referred to as HPV, is a group of more than 150 related viruses. According to the American Cancer Society, HPVs are called “papillomaviruses” because some types cause noncancerous tumors known papillomas, or warts. Some types of HPVs are known to cause cancer, including those of the cervix, vagina, vulva, penis, anus, and parts of the mouth and throat. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 79 million people in the United States are currently infected with HPV. HPV vaccines can be very effective, preventing infections that can cause six different types of cancer, but are most effective when administered to older children and teenagers. The ACS notes that doctors recommend boys and girls receive the HPV vaccine at age 11 or 12. In such instances, boys and girls will receive two doses of the vaccine six to 12 months apart. While the vaccine can be administered later, kids or even young adults who do not receive the vaccine when they are between the ages of 15 and 26 will need to receive three doses within an eight-month span.

S E V RA Finicky bird Several weeks ago, a little bird, a house wren, began building a nest in the Penny Saver delivery tube. She made a considerable pile of small twigs, filling the tube about 1/2 full. So, I contacted the carriers for the Genesee Valley Penny Saver, all of whom cooperated and used different delivery tubes. But after all the commotion, that little bird never laid a single egg! She had worked so hard, but it wasn’t a very good spot for a nest. Anyway, thanks to the various carriers! We all tried to help, but apparently the little wren didn’t like the location she chose after all. - Sincerely, a bird watcher Thank you, farmers! Thank you to Merrimac Farms, Livingston County Farm Bureau, and all the farmers & volunteers for the well organized Farm Fest on Saturday, September 11, 2021. It was a great family event, very educational & entertaining for all. We are very lucky to have so many devoted farm families in Livingston County. Thanks so much because without farmers we would be hungry & thirsty. May all your days be blessed & know you are appreciated. Thanks! Can’t thank you enough! The Elba Betterment Committee would like to thank everyone, not only in Elba, but also in our surrounding communities for the outpouring of support for our summer concert series - EBC Music and More 2.0. The musicians - who helped us navigate through the staging and presentation - were just phenomenal! The vendors - providing food and beverages with friendly and professional service; Christine White, for your patience and expertise with the advertising; GO Art! for the opportunity to present this amazing series to our community; and the Village of Elba for letting us use our beautiful park free of charge. So many people commented on what a wonderful place it is. And of course, thank you to all of the people who came out to the festivals - even in the pouring rain - we cannot say enough about your loyalty, support, positive comments and smiling faces! We hope to see you again next year!
Social Security not a perk I am a 73-year-old single lady by circumstance. My Social Security takes up most of my mortgage. I have to work in order to make a car payment, pay utilities, insurance, gas, medication, etc. Food is at the bottom of the list. I will continue to work because I have to, like so many others. Social Security was taken out of my pay weekly since I was 18 years old. I would say that 55 years worth of deductions belongs to me and to everyone who reaches the age to collect SSI regardless if they work or not. I’m fortunate that I am able to work 30 hours a week, but who knows what the future will bring. Social Security is not a perk for older workers; it belongs to us senior citizens! Social Security not doubled response Are you suggesting that a company is some magical floating entity that exists to pay bills and taxes and offer “perks” to the owner? Who do you think works seven days a week, 365 days a year, with no benefits, no healthcare, no pension, no paid days off, no dental? Who pays self-employment tax? Whose personal bank account do all taxes come out of, including both the company’s and the owner’s share of Social Security? The “company” does not pay for these things. Try running your own business before “educating” others on what they do and do not pay.

THE RIGHT WAY TO LEAVE A JOB Provide ample notice. Even if it is time to move on, ensure that your current employer has plenty of time to interview potential replacements and train someone to take your place. This ensures an easy transition for all involved, and can show your employer that you have the company’s best interests in mind. While two weeks’ notice is the standard, if you have held a professional position for some time, extend the courtesy to three.
