This is the feast-time of the year

When hearts grow warm and home more dear;

When Autumn’s crimson torch expires

To flash again in winter fires; And they who tracked October’s flight

Through woods with gorgeous hues bedight,

In charmèd circle sit and praise

The goodly log’s triumphant blaze.

The time of the falling leaves has come again. Once more in our morning walk we tread upon carpets of gold and crimson, of brown and bronze, woven by the winds or the rains out of these delicatetextureswhileweslept.

How beautifully the leaves grow old! How full of light and color are their last days! There are exceptions, of course. The leaves of most of the fruit-trees fade and wither and fall ingloriously. They bequeath their heritage of color to their fruit. Upon it they lavish the hues which other trees lavish upontheirleaves....

But in October what a feast to the eye our woods and groves present! The whole body of the air seems enriched by their calm, slow radiance. They are giving back the light they have been absorbing from the sun all summer.

PAW’S CORNER

Can This Dog be Trained?

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Recently, a new member joined our family: a toy poodle mix named Petey who was rehomed by an acquaintance who said they just couldn’t handle him and that he was untrainable. Petey is 4 years old, bounces everywhere, and loves to play soccer by catching a ball and then bouncing it off of his front paws back toward me. He’s incredibly smart, but training him has indeed been a challenge. I know the previous owners never made an effort to train him in basic obedience, and they le him alone for days at a time. His house-training is spotty. How can I make the training process faster and easier for both of us? - Doug L., Burlington, Vermont

DEAR DOUG: You’ve taken on a real challenge: a smart, independent and energetic dog. Petey sounds like a wonderful little guy, though, and I’m so glad you’ve added him to your family and committed to his well-being.

Building trust with Petey is important so that he knows what to expect from you and the rest of the family. Do that by adhering to a schedule: walks, feeding and training at the same time each day, with as little deviation as possible.

Obedience-training a smart and independent dog requires you to be smart about training, too. Petey needs to know the house rules, and he must want to do the things you’re asking him to do (or not do). Look into positive reinforcement methods like clicker training (https://www. akc.org/expert-advice/training/clicker-training-your-dog-mark-andreward/). Commit to a consistent training regimen so that desirable behaviors are reinforced and negative ones are discouraged. Work with a trainer if you are still struggling with Petey a er a few weeks.

Genesee Valley Health Partnership Promotes Health and Awareness for Livingston County Residents and Businesses

Since 2000, Genesee Valley Health Partnership (GVHP) has helped the community as a nonprofit integrated rural health network of over forty multi-sector organizations based in or who provide services in Livingston County. Network members represent healthcare, education, government agencies, law enforcement, veterans, and many community-based organizations.

According to GVHP’s contracted coordinator, Jackie Woollett, the partnerships aim to improve the health and well-being of the Livingston County community through collaboration, education, and prevention. e GVHP operates through a committee structure focused on community priorities and health disparities.

Currently there are three committees. e Be Well in Livingston Committee encourages the community to eat better, move more, and stress less. e Suicide Prevention Taskforce focuses on reducing suicide through awareness, education, training, and outreach efforts.

e Trauma-Informed Care Committee promotes the development of resilient and trauma informed communities through prevention, education, outreach, and policy changes.

GVHP presents obesity and chronic diseases as more likely causing risks for serious health problems, and since Livingston County tends to statistically have slightly poorer health compared to the rest of upstate New York, Be Well in Livingston suggests opportunities to support sustainable healthy lifestyle choices that promote healthy living by implementing policy, system, and environmental changes to reduce obesity in children and adults.

For example, the initiative encourages organizations to become Healthy Worksites by making small changes such as adding stretch/stand breaks as agenda items in lengthy meetings, adding fruits, vegetables, water, and other healthy options to events, and other such reasonably-implementable changes. By modeling healthy behavior and supporting employees’ healthy choices, companies can help make health a workplace priority.

Be Well in Livingston also posts activities calendars to encourage the community to get out and enjoy each other’s company while being more active and helping their overall health.

In the last two years, two Be Well Communities have started in Nunda and Mt. Morris. e Be Well Committee looks to add other interested towns/villages to the Be Well Communities list. e pandemic challenged in-person events and outreach; however, the GVHP seeks to focus on more in-person marketing and promotion efforts this year.

September is Suicide Prevention Month, and the GVHP’s Suicide Prevention initiative encourages residents to become informed of the mental distress signs to look for with their family, friends, and neighbors. With that information, the GVHP informs and encourages familiesto“LockMeds.LockGuns.TalkSafety”tohelpsavelivesinthe

community. e Taskforce supported by the GVHP offers gatekeeper training for community members, community-based organizations, and schools. Information on these training opportunities is shared on the GVHP Facebook page, in the monthly Health Flash newsletter, and by contacting info@gvhp.org.

is initiative focuses on mental health literacy, understanding how to nurture and maintain good mental health. By understanding mental disorders, their symptoms, and their treatments, the initiative decreases the stigma typically surrounding mental health concerns, allowing people to find the community of help they need, and decreasing the chances of suicide in people of all ages. e GVHP also connects Livingston County residents to the FLX Teens are Alright project, informational materials and programs to improve mental health literacy for middle and high schoolers in the Finger Lakes region.

Key concepts of the FLX Teens are Alright project are:

1. Emotions are normal and valid

2. You matter and are not alone

3. Our generation is facing unique challenges that adults may not understand

4. Speak up for yourself and ask for what you need

In the Trauma-Informed Communities initiative, GVHP helps “create communities in which every child can thrive.” is initiative promotes resilient, trauma-informed communities in the county through prevention, education, outreach, and policy changes. ey offer resources to manage stress and self-regulate emotions and calm oneself despite daily or emergency stressors. e breathing exercises the initiative offers can help all people. Activities and strategies offered through this initiative help build stronger community members.

GVHPhostsits3rdannualSafety&WellnessFaironSaturday,May 20th at the Livingston County Campus on Murray Hill. e event will be from 11am - 2pm and will feature hands-on activities, educational displays, a free Child Passenger Safety Seat Check Event, and much more. Cornell Cooperative Extension of Livingston County leads this community event and many of the GVHP membership attends to share programs and services available to community members!

e Genesee Valley Partnership always seeks new members and partnerships to work towards Livingston County residents being the healthiest in New York State. Please visit the website for more information on becoming a member www.gvhp.org

Q&A Master Gardeners with the

If you ask 10 gardeners how they winterize their gardens you get 10 answers... all good ones.

I like to cut my peonies and hostas down to 3-4” so that the “ratty” looking leaves don’t irritate me all winter when I lookoutmywindows! Thatsavesmetime in the Spring.

I also save some mulch (or buy/get more) to pile on to those beds that I want to keep from getting “weedy” now & in the early spring.

Besides harvesting all my veggies & cleaning out extraneous vegetation

from those beds, this year (instead of mulching) I am going to plant a “cover” crop of mustard seed to rejuvenate those beds.

Finally, I have dahlias that I dig up when they’re done blooming (& store inside for the winter) and daffodil bulbs to plant before the snow flies.

Harvest all crops. Pull up all plants. Sort diseased and seed bearing and discard. Weeds should be removed to get rid or seeds and insects. Remainder of plants can be mixed with leaves and composted. Test soil pH in Fall in order to

noting soil amendments, rotations, pests,or other concerns for next year.

For my vegetable gardens, I totally clean them out except for late season/ winter vegetables- kale, winter density spinach & greens, carrots and garlic. Pulling all plants and vines and discarding them in a place away and downwind of the garden for biosecurity. The garden is then rototilled. I prefer to seed the freshly tilled garden with oats as they help clean the soil.

In one known to be very wet garden, that is not an option as it would mean not being able to get on it to spring tiller in a timely manner ( June or July??) So that wet garden is often free seeded w/ perennials/herb mixture such as dill, red clover, old sunflower seed. It is surprising what comes up next year and is also fun to watch the turkeys in that wet garden.

from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County

Deep soaks in the fall are important if autumn has been dry. Conifers, such as yews, and broadleaf evergreens, such as hollies and boxwoods, are susceptible to winter burn because they release moisture through their leaves year-round. Pay particular attention to broadleaf types that have a south/ southwestexposuretotheafternoonsun, and give them extra water as needed.

Protect Bark onYoungTrees

Newly planted trees, especially fruit trees, have thin bark that can suffer sun scald or crack from fluctuating day/night temperatures.Tree wrap tape and plastic spiral tree protectors can help prevent this problem.

* On Sept. 25, 1789, the first Congress of the United States proposes 12 amendments to the U.S. Constitution, and sends them to the states for ratification. Ten were ratified and are known as the Bill of Rights.

* On Sept. 24, 1968, CBS airs the first episode of the pioneer newsmagazine show “60 Minutes,” which would become the longest-running prime-time show in American television history. The first episode featured coverage of the Richard Nixon and Hubert Humphrey presidential campaigns.

* On Sept. 23, 1992, Manon Rheaume becomes the first woman to play in men’s North American pro sports leagues when she takes the ice for the NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning in a preseason game.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am male, age 65. I exercise regularly. A shortness of breath led me to get a chest X-ray, which showed that I have emphysema. I smoked for 10 years, but quit 33 years ago. As an avid runner, this revelation was perplexing and depressing. Is it possible that other factors contributed to me getting emphysema, and how do I minimize this disease, if possible? -- T.W.

ANSWER: Emphysema is most often caused by smoking in North America or by cooking fires in many parts of the world. The exact type of emphysema you have can help tell what caused it, but that usually requires a biopsy, which is generally unnecessary for a diagnosis or treatment. Although X-rays and CT scans can help with the diagnosis, the definitive study is the pulmonary function test. For this test, you must breathe in and out for more times and in more ways than you ever thought was possible with a respiratory technician and a lot of machines. (When I was a fourth-year medical student, I had my own PFTs done as a learning experience -- thank you, Dr. Julian Solway -- and have respect for how hard they are to perform correctly.) Besides smoke exposure, another cause is the genetic Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, which can affect the liver as well. This diagnosis is made by blood testing and confirmed by DNA testing through a genetic counselor. I always consider this diagnosis in a person with emphysema who is a nonsmoker or has minimal smoking history. If you do have AAT deficiency, there may be other treatments available, but specific treatment requires special expertise.

Regardless of the cause behind your emphysema, you have already made the most important change by quitting smoking. Avoiding secondhand smoke and other lung irritants is important, too.

There are no treatments to reverse emphysema, but many can improve symptoms. These include medication (such as inhalers), pulmonary rehabilitation and oxygen in people with emphysema that is severe enough to cause low blood oxygen levels. Most people who quit smoking have a very slow progression of the disease. However, it’s important to quit smoking as soon as possible so that there is enough reserve lung function.

PREPARE YOUR LAWN &

FOR WINTER

Mulch leaves. Falling leaves are a telltale sign that winter is coming. In lieu of raking leaves as they begin to fall, homeowners can mulch them into their lawns. Scotts®, an industry leader in lawn care, notes that mulching leaves is a great way for homeowners to recycle a natural resource and enrich the soil of their lawns. While it might not be possible to mulch fallen leaves in late autumn when they begin to fall en masse, doing so in the early stages of fall should be possible so long as the lawn is not being suffocated. Scotts® recommends mulching the leaves to dime-size pieces to a point where half an inch of grass can be seen through the mulched leaf layer.

“People in suburbia see trees differently than foresters do. They cherish every one. It is useless to speak of the probability that a certain tree will die when the tree is in someone’s backyard .... You are talking about a personal asset, a friend, a monument, not about board feet of lumber.”

Consider mums. Chrysanthemum plants are perennials. While they look beautiful in pots, if planted, maintained and winterized, they can bloom every fall.

Many people may be tempted to discard rusty tools that have gone unused and sat in a garage or shed for a significant period of time. But tools encrusted with rust do not need to be relegated to the trash bin, nor do gardeners have to toil for hours scraping and sanding off the rust. There’s a much easier way to restore rusty tools that relies on a common household ingredient: vinegar. Pour vinegar into a deep enough vessel to submerge the metal part ofthetool.Soakthetoolovernight. The next day, use a scouring pad to rub off the rust. If the tool is too big to fit into a can or bucket, simply wrap it with a vinegarsoaked rag and cover the whole tool with a tightly secured plastic bag. Follow the same procedure the next day. After all the rust is gone, rinse the tool in cool water and dry thoroughly. Then return it to regular usage.

DID YOU KNOW?

The end of the year is often a popular time to volunteer, as the spirit of giving that’s synonymous with the holiday season compels millions of people to make an effort to support local charities and nonprofit organizations.Inyearspast, thatmight have made it difficult for prospective volunteers to find organizations in need of volunteers. However, as the world continues to confront the COVID-19 pandemic, charitable organizations and nonprofits may have a host of opportunities for prospective volunteers. A 2020 report from Fidelity Charitable found that volunteer activity shifted considerably during the pandemic. Prior to the onset of the pandemic in 2019, 81 percent of volunteers lent a hand in person. That number dropped to just 35 percent during the pandemic. That left many charities and nonprofits in need of in person volunteers. The rollout of three successful vaccines will no doubt compel more people to volunteer in person as 2021 draws to a close, and there should be plenty of opportunities to help charitable organizations in need. In addition, the pandemic might have led some nonprofits to expand their remote volunteeringoperations, anexpansion that does not need to end even as the world gradually transitions to life after COVID-19. That should mean there’s still plenty of chances to embrace remote or virtual volunteering.

STRANGE BUT TRUE

* The first webcam was created to check a coffeepot! In 1993, researchers in the University of Cambridge’s computer science department really didn’t like getting up from their chairs to check the coffeepot just to find it empty, so they wired a system that would stream three images per minute from the Trojan Room, where the pot was kept, to the internal computer network. By the end of that year, the stream made it onto the new World Wide Web, endowing the Trojan Room coffeepot with international, if brief, fame.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT FALL

The colors of fall foliage are actually present year-round. Fall is known for its colorful foliage. But the pigments responsible for those colors are actually present year-round. According to the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, green, yellow and orange pigments are present year-round. However, during spring and summer, the leaves serve as factories where many foods necessary to help the tree grow are manufactured. That process takes place in the leaf in cells containing chlorophyll, which gives the leaves their green color. This process ceases as hours of daylight decrease and temperatures drop. As a result, chlorophyll breaks down, the green color disappears and the vivid colors of fall foliage begin to appear.

Here’s a tip

* You can plant deciduous trees (trees that lose their leaves in the fall) strategically in order to reduce your heating and cooling costs. eir leaves grow in the spring, blocking summer’s heating rays, but when winter comes, they fall off to let the sun in, warming things up a bit.

* Keep nail-polish bottles easy to open by rubbing a little bit of petroleum jelly inside the cap of the bottle.

* M.C. in Arizona would like to know some alternative uses for hair conditioner. Here goes: use as a shaving lotion for legs or face; a makeup remover; ouch-free bandage removal; so en makeup brushes or paintbrushes before storage; get knots out of doll hair or costume wigs; wash delicates (think silks and pantyhose); rub on a shower rod to help curtain glide effortlessly; and lastly, soak a shrunken sweater in a conditioner/water solution to so en the fibers, then gently try stretching the sweater back to size.

* “Clean an egg carton very well. Flip it over and make slits in each egg cup. is works wonders as a child’s card holder for card games.” -- L.P. in Maryland

Is not this a true autumn day?

Just the still melancholy that I love — that makes life and nature harmonize. The birds are consulting about their migrations, the trees are putting on the hectic or the pallid hues of decay, and begin to strew the ground, that one’s very footsteps may not disturb the repose of earth and air, while they give us a scent that is a pefect anodyne to the restless spirit. Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns.

~George Eliot, letter to Miss Lewis, 1st October 1841

Cemetery Thank You

Now that I'm back on my feet again after two falls, I'd like to send out a huge thank you to two people who helped me on Father's Day at Oakwood Cemetery. While trying to plant a flower, I lost my footing, fell, and was unable to get up. When I called for help, a lovely lady heard me and signaled a man in a white car who told me his name was Andrew. Andrew was driving his baby around to get him to sleep. Andrew got me upright, walked me to my car, put my walker in the trunk, and then proceeded to finish planting the flower. How great was that?! And how lucky that baby will grow up with Andrew as his father. And how lucky I was to have that lovely lady look for help for me.

Awesome staff

I am a Senior Citizen who gets treated badly by some younger people, however when I attend senior activities at the Henrietta Senior Center, Shelly and her staff treat all of us well. The same happens at the Wheatland Senior Center where Shanna and her staff go out of their way to make seniors feel happy and comfortable. Thank you all, but especially Shanna and Shelly.

Get me to the church on time….NOT!

I detest weddings, and here is why: They have become showy extravaganzas. The music is so loud that one must shout to talk with others. The expenses for the gown, the reception, the band, and the food, not to mention any other perks deemed “necessary” are excessive. And why get married in a church when a garden or a barn or a beach will do? What happened to modest weddings where couples exchange their vows before God and truly mean it? What happened to guests wearing respectful and modest clothing? What happened to families rejoicing in the union of two families and where children are welcome? Weddings were meant to be holy and beautiful celebrations of the sacrament of marriage.

Motorcycles

This is not for responsible motorcyclists. This is for irresponsible motorcyclists. To put it bluntly, stop riding like self-centered idiots! Speeding, ignoring stop signs, passing on double yellow lines, etc. In addition to making automobiles aware of motorcycles, how about a campaign directed at irresponsible riders. Motorcycles vs. automobiles in a crash: the bike looses.

QUALITIES TO LOOK FOR IN A POST-RETIREMENT JOB

Engagement: A job seniors find engaging also is more likely to provide the types of benefits seniors are looking for in post-retirement work. For example, researchers at Boston College’s Sloan Center onAging and Work found that seniors who find a job or volunteeringopportunitytrulyengagingaremorelikelytobenefitpsychologicallyfrom those experiences than those whose post-retirement work is not engaging. If seniors find themselves simply going through the motions with their post-retirement work, theycanlookforopportunitiesthattheycanbemoreenthusiasticabout.

RELIEVE STRESS THROUGHOUT THE DAY

Meditate. When stressed out, men and women should not discount the potential benefits of meditation. Researchers from Johns Hopkins University examined more than 19,000 meditation studies, ultimately concluding that mindful meditation can ease stresses like anxiety, depression and pain. The APA notes that such meditation has been found to reap immediate benefits, potentially helping people who can find time to meditate during the day to prevent their stress from accumulating throughout a hectic workday.

CONSERVE ENERGY AROUND THE OFFICE

Conservation methods can help save energy and preserve natural resources, but business owners may also be intrigued by the potential cost-savings of conservation.

Utility costs vary depending on the size of a business, but the U.S. Small Business Administration notes that prospective business owners must estimate and include such costs when seeking loans to start their businesses. Estimated utility costs can be intimidating, especially for those owners who have never before owned their own businesses. Traditional conservation methods like recycling and reusing are great ways to conserve and save around the office, but business owners also can embrace some other ways to lower their office energy costs while benefitting the planet at the same time.

RELOCATING FOR A NEW JOB

Emphasize organization. Much of the stress associated with relocating can be traced to the logistics of uprooting oneself and one’s family. Men and women who are unaccustomed to making lists may want to start, as doing so can help keep track of all the tasks that need to be completed before hitting the road. Various unique tasks, from canceling utilities to changing insurance policies, must be completed before moving, and it’s easy to lose track of what’s been done and what hasn’t. Maintaining a to-do list and checking off tasks as they’re completed can simplify the relocation process.
