World War II German interrogator Hanns Scharff’s unusual techniques for extracting information -- which included sharing his wife’s homemade baked goods, cracking jokes, unsupervised nature walks and afternoon tea -- were so successful that the U.S. military later incorporated them into their own interrogation schools.

According to the American Cancer Society, the average age at the time of diagnosis of testicular cancer is 33. Young and middle-aged men are the most likely to be diagnosed with testicular cancer, though the ACS notes that 14 percent of cases occur in children, teens and men over the age of 55.The ACS estimates that roughly 440 men will die of testicular cancer in 2021. Though that’s troubling, testicular cancer can usually be treated successfully. In fact, the ACS notes that a man’s lifetime risk of dying from the disease is one in 5,000. However, the incidence rate of testicular cancer has been increasing in many countries, including the United States, for several decades. The reasons for that are unknown, though the rise in incidences underscores the need for men, especially young men, to discuss testicular cancer, including its risk factors and symptoms, with their physicians.

Thank you to my “garbage plate” angel
I am a female senior citizen with poor hand movement due to arthritis. My foolish self thought I could handle carrying my huge garbage plate takeout container from the restaurant to my car. However I was not able to park in a handicapped spot and so on the way to my further away space, I dropped the whole container! Luckily not much fell out and a very kind gentleman was in the parking lot to help me pick it up. He also noted that my plate hadn’t come with diced raw onion. “That’s integral to a plate,” he said. So true! Luckily he had some diced onion leftover from his plate he donated to mine. I deeply enjoyed this meal. Thanks to that parking lot angel and I will pay it forward!
Stopped Traffic!
Thank you to everyone who stopped their cars on Veteran’s Memorial and to everyone who helped me catch my dog after he slipped his harness! I cannot express how relieved I am that he is safe and sound, and the recipient of a new, better fitting harness!
Inconsiderate dog owners
Please, dog owners (not all by any means, but many of you), leash your dogs! Just because you love your dog like a child doesn’t mean that I do. We are fortunate enough to have many terrific walking and hiking trails in the area. Nothing ruins a morning jog or an evening stroll like an untrained dog barreling towards you as the owner says “don’t worry, he’s friendly.” Guess what? I don’t care! It is about time for legal enforcement of the signs stating the fines for unleashed dogs!
Local elections
Am I the only one who’s already sick of the commercials, flyers, and in person discussions of anyone who spends more time attacking their opponents and less time saying what they will do for us?
Overuse of perfume/cologne
Attention aids, nurses, people in the medical field, home health aids or visitors to the hospitals, senior apartments or nursing homes. Overuse of perfume/ cologne that lingers in the hallways makes many elderly people ill. Please consider the necessity of having to wear it in these places. It affects people with asthma, COPD, and many other illnesses. Respect their living space. It would be so much appreciated.

Before the pumpkin spiced latte took over, the American fall was marked by hot ciders and other spicy beverages.

Nothing speaks comfort like fall, and nothing speaks fall like wrapping our hands around a warm beverage. As the temperature drops and days become shorter, lay cozily on the couch, turn on the T.V., and let the powerful scent of apple, nutmeg, and cinnamon fill your home — it’s time to celebrate National Hot Mulled Cider Day. While most are acquainted with mulled ciders, on September 30 we bump it up a notch and mull it with spices, cinnamon, cloves, orange peels, and nutmeg to celebrate the arrival of fall.
Fall décor
Since it’s smelling like fall it needs to look like fall!
As the cider brews in the kitchen, replace the summer décor with fall pumpkins, gourds and fall scented candles.

Here’s a tip
* Cellphones get dirty, especially touch-screen phones. Be sure to wipe the surface of your phone daily during cold and flu season. Use an approved antiseptic wipe for electronics.
* I have found myself with an abundance of peppers from my garden, so I cleaned and chopped them, then froze them. I am able to take out what I need, and they won’t spoil. -- C.E. in Florida
* To keep windshield wipers clean between replacement periods, dampen a so cloth with rubbing alcohol and wipe the length of the blade.

Shredded leaves can make for a great amendment to fertilizer for garden beds and even the lawn. Leaves lying on the grass can be mulched into small pieces with a mulching mower so they don’t choke the blades of grass. Leaves also can be broken down with a string trimmer, a leaf blower that has a vacuum function or a commercial shredder/chipper. Add the shredded leaves to a compost pile or use them to fill container plants before adding regular potting soil.

Plan a day to shop local fairs, shops & stands
Autumn is tailor-made for getting out of the house to enjoy the great outdoors. With crisp temperatures perfect for strolls or sightseeing and breathtaking scenery awash in bright autumnal hues, autumn landscapes make for the ideal backdrop for weekend plans, including shopping excursions.
Fall is a great season to enjoy festivals, farmer’s markets and craft fairs, as merchants look to liquidate inventory before they prepare for the rush of the upcoming holiday season. Cities, towns, hamlets, and everything in between will host their share of open markets and more with great deals to be had, and fall is an ideal time to visit local shops and stands.

DID YOU KNOW?
LIQUORSWINES
Come autumn, many foods seem to take on a unique flavor exclusive to the season. That’s thanks to the ubiquitous “pumpkin spice,” which each fall is a specially featured ingredient in everything from cream cheese to marshmallows. Naturally, pumpkin spiceisalsoakeyingredientwhen preparing pumpkin pie. But just whatdoespumpkinspicecontain?
Pumpkin spice is a combination of several different ground spices. It typically includes cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and nutmeg. It also may include allspice. Pumpkin spice is the name given to the blend in the United States. In the United Kingdom, pumpkin spice is known as “mixed spice,” which is a similar but not exact blend as that used to create pumpkin spice. Both feature cinnamon as the dominant flavor.

DID YOU KNOW? Without pollinators, more than 100 crops grown in the United States would not be able to thrive. Plants, including various fruits, vegetables, nuts and more, rely on pollinators to ensure to transport pollen. Though many plants are self-pollinating and others are pollinated by the wind or water, many others rely on insects and animals to become pollinated. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says birds, bees, bats, butterflies, moths, flies, beetles, and small mammals all can work as pollinators. Examples of crops pollinated by pollinators include apples, squash and almonds.Animals and insects help pollinate more than 75 percent of the world’s flowering plants, and nearly 75 percent of all crops, according to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Unfortunately, pesticide use can diminish the number of natural pollinators. Natural gardening and pest-control can help protect the habitats of pollinators.

How to Best Utilize Compression Stockings
DEAR DR. ROACH: Would you please address how to use compression socks? I sit most of the day, so wearing the socks helps my legs to feel less heavy and tired by the end of the day. Are there people who should not wear them? And what about wearing them during exercise?
-- C.S.
ANSWER: Compression stockings are most commonly used in people with chronic venous insufficiency, a common condition in middle-aged to older people. The major symptom is swelling in the feet and lower legs. The swelling is usually minimal or gone in the morning and gets worse during the day, especially with prolonged standing and even sitting.
Magic Maze
The underlying problem is that the veins, which carry blood from the legs back to the heart, get leaky over decades, and the fluid accumulates in the legs under the force of gravity. Your doctor can prescribe the right size, length and strength of stocking based on your personal condition. The fact that you feel better with compression stockings suggests that you might have venous insufficiency, but it’s still a good idea to ask your doctor about them. Compression stockings are pretty safe, but should not be worn by people with serious reduction in arterial blood flow to the legs.
Arterial disease is completely different from venous insufficiency. It’s caused by blockages in the arteries that carry blood from the heart to the legs. An expert, such as a vascular surgeon, is an appropriate consultant for a person with arterial insufficiency before they consider using compression stockings.
Unless you have moderate to severe arterial disease (in which case you should check with your doctor if you aren’t sure), there is no harm from wearing compression stockings during exercise. There may even be some benefit. Compression stockings should not be worn by those with an acute clot in a major leg vein (a deep venous thrombosis). Once the clot is stabilized for a few days with medication, compression stockings can help treat and even prevent swelling in the affected leg.
People with moderate to severe heart failure should exercise care before using compression stockings, which put the leaked-out fluid back into the circulation and can worsen heart failure. Again, this is an issue to discuss with your regular doctor or cardiologist prior to using compression stockings on your own.
Finally, severe venous insufficiency can cause breakdown in the skin. A person with ulcers or open wounds, or with any kind of acute infection, should be evaluated and treated prior to using compression stockings. A wound care nurse is an ideal consultant in this case.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the Environmental Protection Agency, air currents can carry pesticides that were applied to nearby properties. That means even people who do not apply pesticides in their lawns and gardens can still be at risk of exposure to these potentially harmful chemicals. People concerned by the prospect of being exposed to the pesticides being applied by their neighbors can stay indoors with their children and pets while the substances are being applied. Those who live near fields and parks where pesticides are routinely applied can plant hardy, thick-branched trees to reduce their risk of airborne exposure. The EPA notes that such plants and shrubs can serve as buffers against airborne pesticides, essentially acting as walls around a property that prevent gusty winds from blowing pesticides into yards and gardens.
Q&A Master Gardeners with the
Preserving Native Bulbs
New times bring new technological devices, new generations, new lifestyles, and gardening is not the exception. We crave the new and different and therefore better.Really? This recalls many gardeners attracted to the new hybrids: the latest color, size, and number of blooms in different vegetables, flowers, and fruits.
Personally, I admire the heirlooms, those plants that were grown in our gardens for centuries, loved and appreciated, and passed down through the generations. So, here it
is, late September, the time to plant those charming, trouble-free, longlasting, and self-proliferating spring bulbs. Many of them have been with us for a very long time, such as:
•OrnithogalumUmbellatum, known toallastheStarofBethlehem, iseasy to grow, and sometimes strays, in gardens since 1593!
• Scilla siberica,or Siberian squill,as its name implies, survives a negative 40 degrees Farenheight and carpets dapple shade in a flush of blue in April through May.
• Another blue charmer, Chionodoxa, known as Glory of the Snow, arrived 100 years later in 1788.
• Muscari or grape hyacinths showed up around the same time.
• Mount Hood daffodil, 16-18 inches high, blooms pale-yellow and fades to ivory.
Enjoy these old-timers and keep history alive!

PAW’S CORNER
Cats get allergies too!
DEAR PAW’S CORNER:
eyes water almost nonstop. is has been happening for a couple of weeks. She didn’t seem to have this issue before. My local veterinarian’s office is booked up for another two months, so I’m not sure what I can do in the meantime. Can you help? --
DEAR HARRIET:
Harriet G., Roanoke, Virginia
something in her environment. at could be airborne irritants like pollen, dust or molds. Or, it could be a reaction to something in her food.
You can try to figure out what’s causing her reaction in a couple of ways. First, dust and clean your home thoroughly, and consider adding an air purifier with a HEPA filter in the room that Tushy spends the most time in.
Next, try a different brand of pet food for a couple of weeks to see if that makes any difference. Some cats are sensitive to certain ingredients in pet foods, and because those ingredients vary from brand to brand, it’s difficult to figure out which one is causing the allergy.
When Tushy is able to see the veterinarian, bring along your notes about her symptoms and what effect, if any, the environmental and dietary changes above had on improving her condition. e vet can offer additional treatment and support, such as adding essential fatty acids to her diet or prescribing a steroid to help with her symptoms.
In the meantime, monitor Tushy’s symptoms closely. If they suddenly get much worse, or if she becomes lethargic, vomits frequently or shows other signs of serious illness, take her to an emergency vet immediately.

Crowd control: Local restaurants tend to be smaller and more intimate than many chain restaurants. This can translate into a calm dining experience. When crowds are small, the noise level inside the restaurant may be muted and service may be fast because there aren’t as many tables to serve. Furthermore, local establishments, although concerned about making a profit, may be less worried about table turnover rate, preferring to let diners linger if it means repeat business.

Hundred Acre Nature Park: A Sanctuary for Native Habitats and Community Connection
BY SUZIE WELLS
NestledalongtheserenebanksoftheGeneseeRiver, justa mile long, lies the Hundred Acre Nature Park, a hidden gem of old-growth forest and meticulously cultivated native habitats. Located in Rush, New York, a mere nine miles from the bustling city of Rochester and adjacent to Henrietta, this 100-acre parcel of land, deeded for park and recreation, was generously given to the town of Rush in 2010.
is oasis, with its address at 250 Rush-Scottsville Rd. (also known as Rt 251), is situated to the west of the State School of Industry and shares its borders with the Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum. e park, with its rich biodiversity and enchanting landscapes, beckons all nature enthusiasts to come and partake in its wonders.
Under the stewardship of the Rush Recreation and Park Association, thislandhasbeen nurtured and transformed over the past five years. e association, passionate about preserving and showcasing the natural beauty of Hundred Acre Nature Park, has worked tirelessly to bring its story to the public. rough community engagement and the help of dedicated volunteers, including Boy Scouts, and the invaluable assistance of farmer Bruce Howlett, the park has witnessed the planting of 253 native trees and shrubs, aswellasthecultivationoffiveacresofnativepollinators comprising 27 distinct species crucial to the ecological balance.
e park’s dedication ceremony on September 30 marks an important milestone in the history of Hundred Acre Nature Park. Visitors will enjoy guided nature walks, gator tours of the land, as well as refreshments and raffles, all creating a sense of community among nature lovers of all ages.
e vision of the Rush Recreation and Park Association extends beyond the immediate landscape. Janet Chaize, Vice President of the RRPA, says the organization’s mission is to create a thriving habitat that supports declining native populations. By planting native trees, bushes, wildflowers, and grasses, theynotonlyprovidesustenanceandsanctuaryforbirds andpollinatorsbutalsoofferaninvaluableeducationalresource. Visitorstotheparkcanwitnessfirsthandtheinterconnectedness of our food system and the vital role of pollination.
Comprising 52 acres of forest, Hundred Acre Nature Park boasts areas of old-growth woodland, a rare find in modern
times. During a visit to the park, Tom Whitlow of Cornell University’s School of Integrative Plant Science marveled at the undisturbed vernal pools, a feature in decline across the state. Trails meander along the Genesee River, offering picturesque outlooks with inviting benches, while mowed paths wind through the habitats under restoration.
e remaining 48 acres of the park bear the imprints of a farming history. rough meticulous planning and dedication, these acres are being transformed into a food forest for wildlife, with the planting of native trees, shrubs, and perennial pollinators.
As the park is a labor of love, it relies on the generosity of volunteers and donors. A grant from the USDA Forest Service in partnership with Monroe County Soil and Waterhasbeensecuredforthe planting of 480 native trees, slated to begin in the spring of 2024. However, the journey of Hundred Acre Nature Park is far from over, and every contribution, be it in time, effort, or resources, is invaluable. e association warmly welcomes all those willing to extend a helping hand.
To get involved, reach out via email at rush.ny.rpa@gmail. com or give them a call at 585-360-6651. e park is open most weekends in October, and some weekdays, offering many opportunities for you to connect with nature and be a part of this remarkable endeavor.
In the heart of Rush, New York, the Hundred Acre Nature Park stands as a testament to the potential of community-driven conservation. It is a sanctuary, an educational beacon, and a testament to the power of collective action in preserving the natural world. GET YOUR HOME FALL- AND WINTER-READY
One of the easiest and most effective defenses against heat loss is proper insulation. Prevent cold drafts from entering and the loss of heated air through basement headers, which, when left exposed, can make your furnace work harder. Look for a moisture-resistant product offering high thermal performance, such as Roxul Comfortbatt insulation. This type of mineral wool insulation makes installation simple. All that’s needed is a serrated blade or bread knife. Cut the batt to fit the cavity and press into place. The insulation will help improve energy efficiency as soon as it’s in place and provide savings over the lifetime of your home. Comfortbatt can also be used to top or replace old attic insulation. Aim for an R-50 or a depth of 16 inches.

PREPARE YOUR LAWN & GARDEN FOR WINTER
Remove annuals from the garden. Annuals won’t be coming back in spring, so it’s best to remove ones that are no longer producing from the garden before the arrival of winter. Doing so can prevent the onset of fungal diseases that may adversely affect the garden in spring.
HOME IMPROVEMENT

FALL
Aerate the turf. Aerating reduces soil compacting, facilitating the delivery of fertilizer and water to a lawn’s roots. While many homeowners, and particularly those who take pride in tending to their own lawns, can successfully aerate their own turf, it’s best to first have soil tested so you know which amendments to add after the ground has been aerated. Gardening centers and home improvement stores sell soil testing kits that measure the pH of soil, but homeowners who want to test for nutrients or heavy metals in their soil may need to send their samples to a lab for further testing.

HOW TO RAKE LEAVES MORE EFFICIENTLY
Spread the work around. Sharing the task with others certainly cuts down on the time it takes to clear the yard. Have a leaf-raking party in which members of the household each pitch in before everyone enjoys a welldeserved backyard barbecue.

Man of Fire: William Tecumseh Sherman in the Civil War tells the story of a man who found himself in war and that, in turn, secured him a place in history. Condemned for his barbarousness or hailed for his heroics, the life of this peculiar general is nonetheless compelling and thoroughly American.

Alice M. (Folts) Burdick
September 17, 2023
Dansville- Alice M. (Folts) Burdick, 92, of Dansville, NY passed away peacefully on September 17th at Livingston County Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation. Born at the Dansville Hospital in 1931, the daughter of Erwin and Helen (Rynders) Folts. She grew up in Cohocton and graduated from Cohocton Central School in 1948. Alice attended Syracuse University where she majored in English, Science and Early Childhood Education.
After graduating in 1952, she taught for one year in North Syracuse before moving to Randolf, NY. With her family she moved to Dansville in 1956. She taught for 2 years in the Canaseraga district and then spent 28 years impacting countless lives of 1st and 2nd graders in Dansville. Alice wasn’t known for sitting still, so while teaching she helped with marketing and product development in the family businesses - Burdick Associates and Shapes, Etc.
Alice retired from teaching in 1989 and began her tireless volunteer efforts to advocate for the beautification and preservation of the Dansville community. She was a chairperson, board member and member of several different organizations in the area. e Revitalization Committee, the Dansville Business Association, the Dansville Area Chamber of Commerce & Promotions and Marketing Committee, the Landmark Society of Western New York, the Dansville Historical Society, the West Sparta Historical Society, Clara Barton Chapter #1 of the American Red Cross, and several festival committees.
Alice was best known for her instrumental work in procuring one of the first block grants that provided Main Street building owners with funds to repair building facades. She worked to get the Main Street Central Business District and many other buildings on the New York State and National Register of Historic Places. Many will remember her walking up and down the streets getting people to participate in community festivals, especially Winter in the Village, of which she was one of the founding members.
If you wanted to know what was happening in the greater Dansville areahistory, politics, business, or tourism - you could ask Alice. Her networking initiatives through countless public programs and dinner meetings connected people from all areas; she held many lunches to encourage Ted Jackson to write e Castles on the Hill book. Many people can attest to getting signed up for various committees by Alice, sometimes without even knowing they had said yes.
Alice was predeceased by her parents, Erwin and Helen (Rynders) Folts and her son, John Burdick. She is survived by her daughter, Susan (Randy) DeMuth; grandchildren, Kate (Ryan) Stephens, Ben (Sandrine) DeMuth, and Will (Jess) DeMuth; great-grandchildren, Emmanuel, John, and Violet; and ex-husband Al (Mimi) Burdick.
A private family funeral service was held at her request. A public celebration of life will be held in the Spring.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Alice’s memory to the Landmark Society of Western New York or the Dansville Area Historical Society.

The internet: The CareerBuilder survey found that employers believed the internet is the second biggest productivity killer. VOCATIONAL SCHOOLING CAN PAVE THE WAY TO HIGH-PAYING JOBS
Many students believe that the next natural step after graduating from high school is to go off to college. Secondary education has become such a common transition that many parents begin saving for college tuition as soon as their children are born. Although college can be the next chapter in a student’s education, many teenagers still choose to attend trade school.
Television personality Mike Rowe says the country is in the midst of a skilled labor shortage because workers lack the necessary training to fill the hundreds of thousands of available jobs. Lack of information may drive the notion that trade jobs are nothing more than a backup plan if college doesn’t pan out. However, by realizing that trade jobs, along with short-term vocational training, is a smart investment - and eventually a lucrative career choice - attitudes about trade schools and laborintensive jobs may shift.
A great number of college graduates enter the workforce with degrees that may not help them land jobs. And these students typically carry thousands of dollars in tuition debt. Many college grads are underemployed and working in jobs that aren’t even in their fields of study. Career and technical schools help students develop specialized skills that make graduates immediately marketable in their chosen fields, and trade salaries can be very competitive.
