MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On Jan. 24, 1972, after 28 years of hiding in the jungles of Guam, farmers discover Shoichi Yokoi, a Japanese sergeant who was unaware that World War II had ended. Yokoi had gone into hiding rather than surrender to the Americans.
Lead with Experience… Volunteer to be a Peer Leader! “Being a peer leader means so much to me. Having a chronic condition myself, I’ve learned so much from the participants and other leaders.”
Volunteer… We Need People Like You! To become a facilitator, you just need good communication and interpersonal skills, enthusiasm and a willingness to lead small group workshops.
“I’ve facilitated four workshops now, and with each additional workshop I feel more strongly about the good they bring to others.”
Peer leaders team up to teach the six week program in weekly 21⁄2 hour sessions. Workshops are held each spring and fall throughout Livingston County. You’ll teach important self-management skills and help other older adults learn to take charge of chronic conditions like arthritis, high blood pressure and chronic pain.
Put LIFE Back in Your Life Living Healthy Classes funded by Rural Health Network Grant
Consider Leading A Living Healthy Workshop. Do you or someone you know have a long-term health condition? Would you like to meet new people, develop leadership and other valuable skills? Volunteering with us you’ll have the opportunity to share what you’ve learned about self-care with others! We’re looking for open-minded, friendly individuals who are comfortable speaking in front of small groups and enjoy helping people. Volunteer peer leaders have been found to gain the same health benefits as Living Healthy workshop participants!

Canine Health: Getting To the Heart of It (Family Features) “The heart is an organ that benefits greatly from lean body mass,” said Dr. Al Townshend, staff veterinarian, Wellness Natural Pet Food. “Excess fat around the heart can create resistance, which makes the heart work harder for each beat.” To help dogs maintain a healthy heart, Dr. Townshend suggests a feeding regimen that includes high quality protein, fat and carbohydrates, along with essential vitamins and minerals. risk of blood clots. Along with proper nutrition, pet parents should strive to provide their dogs with regular exercise in the form of walks, hikes and active play. Yearly veterinary examinations can also help maintain a pet’s heart health, as well as his or her overall wellbeing. For more information, visit www.wellnesspetfood.com.

Do you want an evening out? One where you can relax, laugh, and contribute to worthwhile projects? The Dansville Women’s Civic Club welcomes new members at any time. The Women’s Civic Club has been in existence since 1922 and its main purpose is to be “an organized center of cooperation among women” for the betterment of the community. We have monthly dinner meetings with a planned program. There are many laughs, camaraderie, civic engagement, exchange of ideas, and fun! We donate to the Dansville Public Library, Vincent House, scholarships, Catholic Charities, the Food Pantry, Teresa House, Sports Boosters, Flags on Main Street, and to many other organizations and projects.
Our next meeting is on Wed., Jan. 13, 2016 at Jack’s Gaslight Grill, 110 Main St., Dansville. Come and bring a friend! For more information, or to make a reservation for dinner,

Common causes of poor vision Vision loss is a common condition, as the World Health Organization notes that more than 285 million people across the globe suffer some type of visual impairment. Many people can effectively counter their vision problems with prescription lenses, but others may have a more significant issue, such as low vision. The Kellogg Eye Center defines low vision as a reduced level of vision that cannot be fully corrected with conventional glasses. Those with low vision have some useful sight and are not considered completely blind. However, low vision can interfere with performance of daily activities, and some people with this condition are classified as “legally blind.” Symptoms of low vision include difficulty recognizing objects at a distance or problems with differentiating colors. Yet, not everyone dealing with these symptoms has low vision. Specialized testing can determine if a person has low vision or another condition. Many conditions can impact sight and contribute to vision loss. Here’s a look at some of the more common ones. • Glaucoma: A person with glaucoma may gradually lose peripheral vision. Early symptoms, such as a subtle loss of contrast, may be unnoticeable. Eventually, glaucoma may cause tunnel vision, which occurs when a person can only see through a small window. • Macular degeneration: Macular degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss, affecting more than 10 million people in the United States alone, according to the American Macular Degeneration Foundation. The AMDF offers that macular degeneration is caused by the deterioration of the retina’s central portion, known as the macula. The macula is responsible for focusing central vision in the eye, and it

contributes to one’s ability to read, drive a car, recognize faces or colors and see objects in fine detail. • Retinal detachment: An increase of floaters or sudden flashes of light in vision may be indicative of retinal detachment or a tear in the retina. When caught promptly, a detached retina may be repaired. However, if left untreated and the detachment reaches the macula in the center of the retina, vision loss may be irreparable. The National Eye Institute says those with extreme nearsightedness, those who have had cataract surgery or those with a family history of retinal detachment are at a high risk. • Diabetic retinopathy: Blurring or patchy vision loss can be a side effect of high blood glucose levels. Not all people with diabetes will develop vision problems, but it is common enough to warrant attention. • Cataracts: According to The Mayo Clinic, a cataract is a clouding of the normally clear lens of the eye. Cataracts develop when aging or injury changes the tissue that makes up the eyes’ lenses. Clouded vision can make it more difficult to read or drive. Over time, cataracts may obscure vision so much that they require surgical repair. Routine eye examinations can bring potential vision disturbances to light and facilitate faster treatment. Eye doctors also can make suggestions about lifestyle changes, including the use of optical devices to improve sight.
MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On Jan. 20, 1981, minutes after Ronald Reagan’s inauguration as the 40th president of the United States, the 52 U.S. captives held at the U.S. embassy in Teheran, Iran, are released, ending the 444-day Iran Hostage Crisis. January 2016 “Tax Forms Alert!!” Please be patient while we wait for tax forms! The Library voluntarily participates in the IRS Tax Form project, but we don’t have control over shipping delays caused by the recent changes to the tax form. We don’t know WHEN they will arrive! Stop in to check; we’re doing the best we can!
“Books ‘N’ Kids ‘N’ Crafts and Baby’s First Storytime Return” The Library is pleased to continue its Preschool Children’s Literacy Programs beginning January 6th. The Winter Session of Books ‘N’ Kids ‘N’ Crafts starts at 10 a.m. on Wednesday January 6th. Also, the Winter Session of our popular lapsit program, Baby’s First Storytime, returns the following day at 10 a.m., Thursday January 7th. Why are these programs so popular? Reading to, and with, your child is a tradition that helps instill the love of learning. Your child becomes comfortable with the “library experience,” learning to interact with others as well as finding the joy in book selection. And remember: reading to your child at bedtime is an opportunity to be together after any hectic day. It can be more meaningful when your child chooses his or her own books! During the program Ms. Brandy will teach special songs and fingerplays, and sometimes helps your child with crafts. Then she will help select books suitable for the age of your child. Please call (585)335-6720 to register your child or stop in the Library!

“Observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day” The library will be closed on Monday, January 18th in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day; we will reopen on Tuesday January 19th at 10 a.m. Don’t forget you can renew your materials online when we are closed; simply go to dansvillelibrary.org and click on “online catalog”.
“Star Wars Origami” We will be holding an Origami workshop on Saturday, January 16th from 1-3 p.m. for children ages 8-13 at the library. Kids can transform paper into their Star Wars character! Wish them happy birthday in our Birthday Celebrations Section Barb Van Volkenberg is my Everyday Angel. I have witnessed and been in awe of the wonderful care she and her husband have given her mentally handicapped brother for 30+ years. Barb was there for a good friend she lost to cancer and is now being very supportive of a friend with Alzheimer’s, whom she calls, visits and takes out often. She is also there for another friend with Parkinson’s. I hope I never have to deal with a major illness, but if I do, I’ll be lucky to have Barb as one of my friends. I also have other friends who are there for their families and friends in need. I’m sure others do, too. Many thanks to all of these Everyday Angels! Share your angel with Penny Saver readers. He or she just might inspire others to be an angel, too! Submit at gvpennysaver.com under My Hometown.

Twice now, driving on public roads, cars are stopped by parents standing in the road begging for money for their kids’ cheerleading groups. Big threatening amazon type women stand in the middle of the road and push money containers into drivers’ faces, while mean spirited hulk type men stop cars on the other side of the road. Come on parents, pay for your own kids’activities instead of harassing motorists for money. The town should not allow this begging on public roads. If cheerleaders need money, let them work for it. Motorists should not be forced into giving money by threatening parents shoving money containers in their faces. Being a school bus driver I see this a lot and it needs to stop. Drivers--stop making new rules for the road. Do not stop in the road and flag a bus to proceed if they are turning left when you are going straight. YOU have the right of way--use it. You may think you are being helpful but you are not. You are creating a dangerous situation for everyone on the road. There are rules for a reason-so

DEAR DR. ROACH: How much good does it do for the body to just lie there with your eyes closed all night long when you can’t sleep? -- D.R. ANSWER: It doesn’t do much good at all; in fact, it causes harm, in that it makes it more likely for you to associate the bed as a place to stay awake. My advice is, if you are lying in bed and not sleeping, get up out of bed and do something. Listen to soft music. Read a book, as long as the light isn’t too bright. Write in your diary. When you feel like sleeping, get back into bed, but don’t stay there if you aren’t getting to sleep in 15 minutes or so and know that you aren’t going to. Getting a little high-intensity exercise during the day, avoiding caffeine after midday and staying away from naps are good ways to feel ready for sleep at bedtime. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I had my thyroid removed for a goiter 35 years ago. My doctor put me on 100 mcg of thyroid medication; however, when I took it, I got sick. My hands shook, and my heart beat very quickly (over 100). So one doctor told me to split it, and take 50 in the morning and 50 in the afternoon. I felt better, and I took it twice a day for 30 years. After menopause, a different doctor changed it to 88 mcg and said to take it one time a day. This is what I have been taking for five years, but I was feeling better and happier when I split the dose. My question is, can I split this medication? Does it make any different for the body if the TSH is normal? Does it make any difference what time of the day I take it? -- H.T. ANSWER: Many people do split the dose of thyroid hormone, especially if they are taking a type of thyroid, such as Armour, that contains T3. If 88 mcg is the dose that has the right amount of TSH (a hormone made by the pituitary that helps determine whether the dose is correct as far as your body is concerned) for you, then the TSH shouldn’t be affected by taking half the dose in the morning and half at night. Most people don’t find that it matters, but if it relieves your symptoms to take it twice a day, that’s OK. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a home health nurse. Many of my patients think that because something has been cooked and then refrigerated, it will stay good indefinitely! How long should you realistically keep food that is refrigerated? Thank you. -- S.C. ANSWER: Of course, the answer depends on the specific type of food, but a good rule of thumb is three to four days for cooked food. I found more exact recommendations at www.foodsafety.gov/keep/charts/storagetimes.html *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. OMS & ANESTHESIA Oral and maxillofacial surgeons (OMS’s) are trained in all aspects of anesthesia administration. Following completing dental school, an OMS completes at least 4-6 years of advanced training in a hospital-based surgical residency program alongside medical residents in general, plastic and head and neck surgery, along with anesthesiology residents. They have extensive training in anesthesiology over their 4-6 years where they serve on the anesthesiology service and learn to evaluate patients for all types of anesthesia, deliver the anesthetic and monitor post-anesthetic patients. They also have extensive training in all forms of anesthetic emergencies. The ability for an OMS to provide patients with safe and effective outpatient anesthesia distinguishes them as the only extensively formally trained dental specialists to provide anesthetics in a dental office setting. In fact, OMS’s typically have operating rooms (OR’s) specifically designed and state certified for the delivery of safe anesthetics. As licensed general anesthesia caregivers, OMS’s are able to provide patients with all forms and levels of anesthesia, which further distinguishes them from other dental specialists. These include anything from local anesthesia, nitrous oxide-oxygen (or laughing gas), IV and general anesthesia. Every OMS is well prepared to identify, diagnose and assess the source of pain and anxiety and appropriately administer anesthesia. They have extensive experience in airway management, endotracheal intubation, establishing and maintaining intravenous lines and managing complications and emergencies that may arise during the administration of anesthesia. An OMS’s team is always willing to discuss your anesthetic needs with you at any time, as we want all patients to have as pleasant and safe experience as possible during their surgery. If you would like to discuss your surgical or anesthetic needs, please call 585-346-6560.

A tip to land a good internship • Don’t hesitate. Though many internships are tailored to students with a year or two of college under their belt, that doesn’t mean freshman can’t begin to explore potential opportunities. Even if you don’t intend to get an internship in the coming school year or during summer break, you can begin to explore potential opportunities that might interest you when the time to start seeking internships does arrive. Looking early may yield valuable information, such as courses that would improve your chances of landing an internship, that your fellow students who hesitate or procrastinate won’t have. Nothing is really work unless you would rather be doing something else. ~James Matthew Barrie
Effective Ways To Manage Stress In The Workplace Concerns over low pay and job security are consistently one of the top stressors for Americans. In most regions of the U.S., 16 percent of Americans listed low pay as their top stressor, and concerns over job security were a close second. For example, 13 percent of college graduates ranked losing their job as the biggest stressor, which is in line with Americans without college degrees. Workplace stress can have negative consequences on your performance at work, and your life. There are a number of techniques for dealing with workplace stress. First, learn to recognize the symptoms - you may feel a constant sense of nervousness, which can often lead to feeling withdrawn, irritable or apathetic. Stress is also associated with physical problems, such as fatigue and muscle tension. Physical exercise is also shown to help with stress management. Aerobic exercises have been shown to release mood-raising endorphins, so getting 30 minutes of exercise a day can actually help decrease your stress levels. It is also important to get enough sleep, which can help your body deal with the effects of stress throughout the day, and makes you better able to manage emotional swings. There are also important strategies in your workplace that can help you deal with stress. Do not over-commit to non-essential tasks. Prioritize important tasks, and learn to delegate non-essential ones. Also, you can schedule regular breaks into your daily routine to allow yourself to get away from your workstation or office.
