TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Proper Technique Is Key to Accurate BP Reading --DEAR DR. ROACH: I have always read that when you are having your blood pressure taken, your arm should be elevated above your heart. When mine is taken this way, it is normal, around 120/70. When I go to the doctor, my blood pressure is taken with my arm hanging at my side. I often get a much higher reading taken this way, say, 140/90. Is there a correct way to take it, and does it affect the reading? My doctor said the position doesn’t matter and wants to prescribe medication. -- U.P. ANSWER: When taking the blood pressure, the goal is to approximate the blood pressure in the heart. That means that the blood pressure cuff should be at the level of the heart. If the blood pressure cuff is above the heart, then the blood pressure reading will be artificially low. If the blood pressure cuff is dangling below the level of the heart, the reading will be high. For every 10 cm (about 4 inches) above the heart, the blood pressure will be about 7 mm of mercury too low. If I stretch out my arm as high as I can above my heart, I can get it about 30 cm higher than my heart, which would be enough to explain the difference between the 140/90 and 120/70 you have observed. However, for most people when sitting up straight, a properly placed cuff on the arm will approximate the same level as the heart. Although you are right the position matters, it sounds like the doctor’s office is taking the reading correctly. I should also note that the feet should be resting on the floor, not dangling, which can artificially raise the blood pressure. The arm should be supported while taking the blood pressure. I recommend taking the blood pressure three times and using the average. Given how important blood pressure is, correct technique is essential in order to properly recommend who should get blood pressure treatment. Evidence is increasing that a 24-hour home blood pressure device is more accurate at determining who might need medication, especially in suspected white coat hypertension, where the readings are artificially high just because a person is in the office (even if they don’t feel nervous). ***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2020 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

A Big Thanks to Anthony at Hamlin Post Office I ordered stamps online, and somehow, I missed that they were going to be delivered to the same address as mine, but to Rochester, rather than to my correct city. Anthony, the postmaster in Hamlin, got up with me the following day. He was so kind and considerate. Immediately, he remedied my problem. He said that he would replace all four books of stamps. How kind! Within minutes of our phone conversation, our doorbell rings, and low and behold, it is Anthony personally delivering them to my home. I am so thankful that there are still kind and considerate people in the world. Sad to say, the people who got my four books of stamps, as of yet, have made no attempt to return what does not belong to them. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Brilliant books Just opened a gift that we got for our grandkids: an encyclopedia. Remember those? And it is wonderful! Beautifully illustrated with a terrific variety of interesting subjects and fun to read, and published by Britannica who has a rich history in encyclopedias. And the beauty of such a resource is that it pulls you into its pages and information more so than any website ever could. The power of the printed page is still first when it comes to recall and exposure to more ideas than a static computer screen. Give your brain a break. Turn off the internet and pick up a book!

Merry Christmas! On December 21st, my estranged daughter and I decided to meet for breakfast at Patty’s Place in Canandaigua. While we were there, someone bought our breakfast for us. I would like to thank that person. He or she has no idea how much that meant to me as I am a single mom trying to hold things together. I was moved literally to tears. It was an important day for my daughter and I as we are trying to mend fences, and this person added to this important breakfast and reminded both of us to give. Thank you so much! You are a blessing in this world.

Santa Mobile On Monday, December 21, the Riga Recreation “Santa Mobile” took flight over the roads of Churchville/Riga in search of unique and tastefully decorated homes in the area. Santa was accompanied by his trusty elves and others to choose the 14 homes and then give them “Secret Santa” gift cards purchased from local businesses. We were greeted by many surprised smiles and the cards were given to residents in a socially distant manner. (Yes, Santa had his mask on!) Thanks to Bailey, Brooke, Lily, Sue, Ryan, and Matt for all their help to bring precious smiles to the faces of the homeowners. Merry Christmas, Dave, Riga Recreation Supervisor

My name is

Eggnog I am an 8-month-old Easter Egger. I may be a mix breed but I’m the best in the flock because I lay beautiful colored eggs like blue and green! I enjoy showing off each morning with my egg song, yes, I sing when I lay an egg!

TIPS TO HELP REALIZE YOUR GOALS IN THE YEAR AHEAD Examine your priorities. Achieving goals is easier when their goals can be among your biggest priorities. Examine your priorities to determine if you can fully commit to goals that may require significant time commitments. Men and women who are already stretched thin may need to recalibrate their goals or make changes in other areas of their lives before they can fully commit to pursuing new goals.

Whilst not strictly a purebred, the Easter Egger has become a backyard favorite across America. With its cute looks and vibrant personality what’s not to like? They are known as Easter Eggers because they can lay a wide variety of egg colors and their plumage can also be various colors. Generally, in the US an Easter Egger is a bird that is understood to carry the blue egg laying gene from its parent stock (the Araucana or Ameraucana).

Resolve to put down devices and reduce screen time Electronic devices have infiltrated nearly every aspect of daily life. And thanks to the portability of today’s smartphones and tablets, many people are rarely without access to the internet or other digital applications. A 2016 Nielsen Company audience report found that adults in the United States devoted about 10 hours and 39 minutes each day to consuming media. The analytics firm Flurry says users are spending nearly half of that time on mobile devices, particularly using mobile apps. Active Healthy Kids Canada reported in 2014 that children between the ages of three and five spent an average of two hours per day in front of screens, while the statistics group eMarketer estimates that adults in Canada spent an average of nine hours and 41 minutes a day using media in 2016. The Canadian Paediatric Society states that exposure to digital media is a concern and can affect children and families. Exposure to screens can be habit-forming, and early overexposure increases the likelihood of overuse later in life. Reducing screen time has become a mantra in many households across North America and may also be something adults hope to do in the future. The following are some ways to cut down on screen time. Keep a journal. A journal can help men and women log their screen time over the course of a few weeks. Jot down time spent watching TV, using a computer, using mobile devices, or playing video games. Some people may be surprised to learn just how much time they’re spending staring at screens, and that realization may be just what they need to make changes. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Use a standard alarm clock. By not using their smartphones as alarm clocks, people can avoid the temptation to begin looking at social media or emails even before they’ve wiped the sleep from their eyes. Make a list of goals. Rather than reaching for a phone, Digital Detox experts suggest keeping a list of goals and experiences in one’s pocket that they can refer to when they’re tempted to look at their screens. Then they can engage in a real-world experience instead of simply looking at their phones. Schedule media hours. Set aside blocks of time when media use is allowed, and resist the urge to activate devices throughout the rest of the day. Put away the phone or tablet. Simply moving a device out of sight may reduce the temptation to send a text or hop onto an app. Remove superfluous apps. Delete apps that take up too much of your time. Having to go the extra step to view Facebook on a web browser, for example, may reduce the likelihood that you will do so. Go screen-free. Resolve to leave home without a phone for a few hours to enjoy unencumbered screen-free time. Electronic devices can be addictive. But over time and with some concerted effort, men, women and children can cut back on screen time.

New Year’s resolutions are made every January, and many people use this tradition as a chance to declare their intention to change jobs in the year ahead. The reasons why people change jobs vary, but the most popular reason to do so might surprise you. According to a LinkedIn survey of more than 10,000 people who recently changed jobs, 45 percent of respondents indicated they changed jobs due to a lack of opportunities for advancement with their previous employers. The next most popular reason to switch jobs was dissatisfaction with the leadership of senior management. Employers may be surprised to learn that dissatisfaction with compensation was relatively low on the list of why people changed jobs, as just 34 percent of respondents listed that among the top reasons why they left their old jobs. While that may encourage employers to find ways other than pay increases to keep their employees happy, it’s also important to note that the LinkedIn survey found that money was the second most popular reason job switchers, 74 percent of whom received higher salaries at their new jobs, chose their new positions.

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Apply lemon juice to the cut surface of an apple to prevent browning. * For stubborn dry patches on hands, like knuckles and around fingernails, try rubbing in a bit of Chapstick. It does the trick to moisturize, and it doesn’t wash off as easily. * “To protect feet from getting soggy when out in snowy or rainy weather, cut a piece of plastic wrap about 3 inches longer than your foot on both sides, then step on it and fold it up on all sides before you put your foot in your shoe. Less expensive than paper plates and stays in place but doesn’t stick to food.” -- N.B. in Texas * D.R. in Illinois uses flip-flops for some unusual purposes, like covered with sandpaper as a sanding block, covered with a chamois for waxing a car or even to apply paint. Personal injury.” * When making meatloaf, put strips of raw bacon on the bottom of the pan and place the meatloaf on top. It adds terrific flavor and will keep the meatloaf from sticking to the pan. * “I purchased a dish drain pad approximately 9 inches by 17 inches, and I use it on the seat of my shower so it won’t be slippery. SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles

The Best You Can Do A show of hands, please. Is anybody else getting worn out by the current state of our lives? Is there anything we can do about it? All I wanted was a package of socks. That shouldn’t be hard. In the past, once a year or so, I’d stroll into the local store, grab a package off the shelf (especially happy when I found a bonus pack with 2 extra pairs in it), pay for it and walk out. And now? Now I can’t find them anywhere. I don’t dare walk into stores just to wander around, so I’m left to do my hunt on the internet. These particular socks are nowhere to be found ... except for the ones at three times the price on Amazon. Then there was the phone call from a neighbor, in the middle of my hunt, describing a new family panic. A family member is undergoing serious medical treatment. They just learned that his nurse tested positive for COVID. Is anyone else tired of the need for constant vigilance because of COVID? The inability to acquire basic goods and sometimes food? The constant sad stories of seniors who are in rehab centers who haven’t had visitors in months? That’s probably what breaks my heart the most, all those lonely seniors in nursing homes or retirement centers. I can’t do anything about the state of the world, but I can do this: Over the next week I’m going to send individual notes and cards to the residents of a local nursing home. I got all their first names and last initials from the facility director, and I’ve ordered a big box of miscellaneous greeting cards. Each one will get a note and a cheery card from me. Maybe it will help brighten their day for a few minutes. It’s the best I can do. c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

CELEBRATE SAFELY THIS NEW YEAR’S EVE Don’t overindulge in alcohol. For many people, overindulging in alcohol is part and parcel during New Year’s Eve celebrations. Such behavior puts everyone at risk, even people who don’t drive. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, conservative estimates suggest that roughly one-half of sexual assaults on American women involve alcohol consumption by the perpetrator, victim or both. While alcohol and its relationship to traffic fatalities draw the bulk of the attention on New Year’s Eve, even people who don’t intend to drive should recognize the dangers of overindulging in alcohol and drink responsibly.

New Year’s Resolutions for Happy, Healthy Pets --DEAR READERS: As we close out one of the most tumultuous and stressful years of our lives, let’s look back and remember how much peace and joy our pets gave to us. When nothing else in the world seemed certain, we could count on our pets to offer unconditional love. That’s why, as we look forward to a new year and new hopes, we must honor and protect our best friends. Let’s resolve to: 1. Spend more time with our pets. Dogs and cats need regular attention and love. While we’re spending more time at home, it’s a perfect time to play with our pets, to add an extra training session and more walks into the routine. 2. Get pets the best care possible. Schedule that routine veterinary visit, and get your pets caught up on their vaccinations. A physical can head off serious illnesses. 3. Include your pets in your will. We don’t like to think about it, but end-of-life planning is important, and our pets need to be part of that planning. 4. Build lasting memories. Take as many photos with your pets as you can. Make scrapbooks that you can look through years from now to remember when your puppy was young, or to memorialize a beloved turtle, hamster, cat or dog. 5. Help other pet owners. So many people are silently struggling right now: either from job loss, ill health, grief or depression. They may not be able to take care of their pets as well as they can. Look out for your neighbors and offer to help if they ask for it. Donate money or supplies to local pet charities that offer assistance to pets and their owners. I wish you and your pets a happy, healthy 2021. Send your tips, comments and questions to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE When choosing coverage, you will no doubt be asked if you prefer term insurance or permanent insurance. Term insurance is the least expensive life insurance, and such policies only last for a predetermined number of years. Men and women may purchase life insurance policies if they only want life insurance until they retire or until their children reach adulthood. Permanent insurance is more expensive and will last from the moment you purchase the policy until your death. Many people choose permanent life insurance policies so the money their beneficiaries receive upon their death can be used to pay estate taxes. In addition, there is an investment component to permanent insurance policies, as a portion of the premiums on such policies is invested (policies will spell out how the money is invested) and allowed to grow tax-free so long as the policy is open. Term insurance only provides protection with no investments. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Dansville Student Maggie Bacon Recognized for Deliciously Good Cause BY AMANDA DUDEK

O

n Tuesday, December 15th, Dansville sophomore Maggie Bacon was recognized with the Livingston County Sheriff’s Foundation’s “Do the Right Thing” Award. The award was piloted by the Livingston County Sheriff’s Foundation to recognize Livingston County students for positive community involvement such as assisting Law Enforcement and First Responders as well as acts of civic responsibility and volunteerism, heroism, role model behavior and leadership. Maggie Bacon, i.e. “The Bacon Baker,” also received a gift card from the LCCOPS Union, but for her, the real gift is the opportunity to give back to the community she loves. It all started last spring when schools across New York shut down and began remote instruction due to the pandemic. Maggie, like so many students, suddenly found herself spending a lot more time at home. “I was bored, and I wanted to find something I could do to take my time and use it wisely to do something fun and therapeutic,” she recalled. Not an ‘artsy’ person in the more traditional sense, Maggie started baking. “It was a way to showcase my creativity in a different way,” she said. As she began making more and more, Maggie created an Instagram account for her hobby: @the.bacon.baker. Before she knew it, friends and neighbors were buzzing about the delicious-looking sweets she was making. “My original intent was not to make any money; I was just doing what I loved doing,” explained Maggie. “I started receiving many unexpected followers, and people were asking to purchase my items.” She decided to use this unexpected development to give back. “My community was doing so much to help those in need during this hard time,” she said. “I had heard a lot about the Dansville Backpack Program which is run through the Dansville PTO. My aunt is a PTO member, and the school was doing a lot to donate to it. I wanted to give back, and this was close to my heart.” Maggie decided to begin taking orders for her baked goods and to accept donations to help those who needed help buying food. To her, this was a no-brainer. “I have been baking since I was little,” shared Maggie. “I would bake with my mom and my great aunt on my mother’s side. We have old recipes that we love to make. I really love doing it!” Beyond recipes, Maggie also points to her family as her inspiration to use her talent to help others. “My family has been the biggest influence for me,” she said. “They have always been focused on giving back and helping others. My dad has always given back to the community and been a positive influence, and my mom helped me decided what to make and how to give back. Through everything, they have been hugely supportive.” Maggie’s idea took off like wildfire as orders started pouring in. “It was just awesome,” she said, adding she quickly found herself creating all kinds of baked goods. “I have baked a lot! I have made everything from pies, pastries, and cinnamon rolls, to cakes, pound cakes, and Bundt cakes, brownies, raspberry and apple turnover, and cupcakes!”

Her favorite are the cupcakes. “They are probably my favorite things to make because of all the creativity involved, and you have so many opportunities to make their frosting swirls just right.” Maggie has made many kinds of cupcakes, including red velvet and carrot cake, but her most popular flavor is her signature chocolate

cake and cupcake. “I found a recipe, and I revamped it,” she explained. “I worked on it and tried different things until it was perfect. It has become my signature recipe!” Her hard work and generosity caught the attention of Livingston County Deputy Robert Holt, who then nominated Maggie for the “Do the Right Thing” Award. Noting Maggie’s motivation and positive attitude, Deputy Holt stated, “During the 2019 Covid-19 Pandemic, like all schools in our area, Dansville Central School District shut down. All children were sent home while teachers and administrators scrambled to begin remote instruction. Maggie Bacon took the time away from school to do something good for her community...To date, Maggie has donated over $1,350 to the Dansville Backpack Program. Maggie also helps her dad organize the Rotary Club Thanksgiving Dinners, while running cross country, dancing and working at the Expressway Auto Auction.” Maggie was completely surprised. “I honestly felt so honored,” she said. “It is such an amazing award to receive. It feels good to demonstrate civic responsibility and help our community, and I hope other people are inspired to help our community be the best it can be, as well. Our community is really close,” Maggie continued, adding her thanks to Dansville Central School for their positive influence and support. “We stick together. We can lean on each other, and it is such an incredible community to live in.” Maggie is currently continuing to bake in support of the Dansville Backpack Program, recently having finished a large order of cinnamon roll cakes for Christmas morning. FINDING WORK AFTER 50

Full-Time - Day, Evening & Night Shifts Part-Time & Per Diem - Various Shifts, W/E

Unemployment isn’t easy for anyone, regardless of their age. But unemployed men and women over 50 may find it especially difficult to find work. Whether it’s a byproduct of age-related discrimination or any of a host of additional variables, jobless older workers often struggle to find work. In a 2016 analysis of government figures, the Schwartz Center for Economic Policy Analysis at the New School estimated that the jobless rate for workers 55 and older in August of 2016, six years after the Great Recession, was nearly 9 percent. At the time, the national jobless rate hovered around 5 percent. Unemployed men and women over 50 who are struggling to find work can consider the following strategies as they look to rejoin the workforce. Revisit your résumé. Unemployed men and women over 50 have no doubt updated their résumés to reflect their most recent professional experience. But they may need to trim some of the fat in regard to their work life 10 or more years ago. Today’s hiring managers may only be concerned with recent experience that illustrates skillsets that are relevant to today’s jobs. Men and women over 50 may consider their experience from 20 years ago invaluable, but if that experience does not meet the specific needs of the jobs they’re now seeking, then they should remove it from their résumés so hiring managers can quickly access the more relevant information from their work histories. Embrace 21st century job hunting. Finding a job in the second decade of the 21st century is unlike job hunting in decades prior, and wholly different from how men and women over 50 looked for jobs upon beginning their professional lives. Networking can mean the difference between unemployment and landing a job. Go to job fairs attended by hiring managers and join professional organizations that host events where professionals in your field can gather. Turn your age into a positive. Men and women over 50 should accept the likelihood that their new managers and/or hiring managers will be younger than them. When interviewing for a job, men and women over 50 should make an effort to showcase their enthusiasm about working with and learning from younger colleagues, while also noting their desire to commit long-term to a company. Some hiring managers may surprise older applicants, viewing them as potentially more reliable than younger workers simply looking to gain some experience in a particular industry before moving on to the next opportunity. Make use of your existing down time. Another strategy unemployed men and women over 50 can try as they look for work is to make better use of their existing downtime. Enrolling in online courses can give prospective employers the impression that applicants over 50 are both tech-savvy and willing to learn new things. Each of those things can help men and women over 50 overcome any unjustified, tech-related stigmas that hiring managers may attach to older job candidates. Finding work after 50 is not always easy, and job seekers may need to adjust their approach before they can get back in the workforce.
